She's so talented, funny, smart. She can do it all. And people love working with her. And I loved working with her. And today, we talked about what is her relationship to work? What is her process? How important is it for her to feel connected to the stuff that she does? How is she dealing with this new version of fame and popularity? And how is it changing her life? And also, how important female friendships are? And how you really haven't met everyone you're supposed to meet, even at my age of 53? So I'm really excited for you to hear what Kathryn and I talked about today. It was a really good hang.

Patty, are you there? Have you joined us? She's not. She's not there. She's still not there. Okay, so just to give you guys an update, Patty just checked in and said, "Got it. I'll have to be on my phone, okay? Putting on slap now." Uh, I don't know what that means. I'm gonna say, "Okay. Ha, ha, ha. Okay. Thanks so much." Okay, this is fun. So I don't know what putting on slap means. It either means she's slapping on makeup, or that's some kind of Broadway term. There you are! Wait, is that a term, putting slap on?

• 3:50Speaker 01

Yeah, slap is an expression for makeup, yeah. Putting slap on.

• 3:54Amy Poehler?

  Oh, I love you, Patty.

• 3:59Speaker 01

I love you too, darling. Let me just put a little more slap on.

• 4:03Amy Poehler?

So what are you doing these days?

• 4:05Speaker 01

  Singing.

• 4:07Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Do you have a show tonight?

• 4:08Speaker 01

No, I have a show on Monday, but what I have tonight is an opera.

• 4:13Amy Poehler?

You're attending it, or you're singing in it?

• 4:15Speaker 01

I am. No, I'm attending it. My friend is taking me. Let me just get the eyeshadow on, darling. Who can talk when you're, you know, putting eyeshadow on? But I'll try. My friend that wrote it is here, because it just premiered, and we're going to the Senior Citizens Special. He's calling it dinner at 5:30.

• 4:36Speaker 01

The opera starts at seven and is three hours long. And so we're gonna go and have dinner at the Met. And which is very exciting. It's very, you know, you feel like you're in, I don't know, another dimension when you go into the Metropolitan Opera House. But it's pretty incredible just to watch the people that show up and how they're dressed and how they act. Girl, I'm ready for you.

• 4:59Amy Poehler?

  Oh, you look fantastic.

• 5:02Speaker 01

I look hideous, but thank you. But let's talk about Catherine.

• 5:08Amy Poehler?

Okay, let's talk about Catherine. So today's episode, we're talking to Catherine. We're doing this fun thing where we're kind of talking behind people's backs before they come in, just to kind of hear more perspective about them and what, what you think I should ask her or, you know, what you'd be interested in hearing her talk about. And tell me how, like, how you met and your, your relationship with her.

• 5:34Speaker 01

Well, we met on Agatha. At, at the table reads, basically. Catherine, because she was the leading lady, was incredibly generous and quite incredibly open and incredibly inclusive and embraced, I think, the responsibility of a leading lady. And that's, you know, that comes without fear, basically. And she was fearless and generous. And, and one of my favorite things about her is she snorts when she laughs. So you know she's having a good time.

• 6:10Amy Poehler?

  She's a big laugher. She's a big laugher.

• 6:13Speaker 01

But when you get the snort, something was really funny. And that's, you know, one of her best qualities, her snort.

• 6:26Amy Poehler?

She is a real mix of a, a, a very poised and serious dramatic actor and deeply goofy.

• 6:35Speaker 01

Yeah, very, very funny. And doesn't take it seriously, which is great. You know what I mean?

• 6:41Amy Poehler?

I'm gonna ask her about this, but I want to ask you too. I mean, the response has been huge for Agatha. It's everywhere. It's viral TikToks. It's people waiting for you at the airport. Like, the, the way you get this giant...

• 6:58Amy Poehler?

Huge new group of people who know you and know your work. What has that been like?

• 7:03Speaker 01

I don't have the kind of response that Catherine has gotten. I mean, and I know that it's so weird because because I do so many different things. People, some people know that I sing and do Broadway musicals and some people know me from Steven's universe and some people know me from Life Goes On and some people know me from Agatha, from Agatha. And the ones I've been getting more, more fan mail about Agatha. And which is great because who would think that I would end up in the Marvel Universe? Knowing nothing about it and choose to remain that way, knowing nothing about it.

• 7:41Amy Poehler?

Any ideas of what I could ask Catherine today? Like any questions?

• 7:46Speaker 01

I'm sure if she's ever thought about directing. And would she cast me? I'm just curious to know whether she would want to direct. And of course, I need to get hired. And I think she, you know, she would be a riot behind the camera. I think, you know, they'd have to take take after take. If it was funny and she snorted, I think she'd be a great director. I think she would be a great director.

• 8:10Amy Poehler?

Agree. All right. Love you, Patty. Thank you so much.

• 8:14Speaker 01

  My pleasure.

• 8:14Amy Poehler?

  Talk to you soon. Bye.

• 8:15Speaker 01

  Okay, bye.

• 11:53Amy Poehler?

  Everyone, this is Catherine.

• 11:54Speaker 02

Hi, everyone. Thank you for having me.

• 11:57Amy Poehler?

Catherine, I love you so much. Thank you for being a good hang.

• 11:59Speaker 02

So happy to be here. I love you.

• 12:01Amy Poehler?

You know, I've only done a few episodes so far. This is very new. And I got a note recently from the great Bill Simmons, who is kind of like, I guess, my boss. But he is so good at podcasting and has created an empire and has allowed me to come do it. And he said, "Lose the ringer." And he said, "Lose the laptop."

• 12:26Speaker 02

Why? Oh, just so it's like more conversational?

• 12:30Amy Poehler?

I guess. Why do you? I just, before I do, I just want to audition it one more time. How do you feel about it?

• 12:35Speaker 02

Listen, I think that that's fine for him, if he doesn't need one. But if you need one, screw it. This is your podcast.

• 12:43Amy Poehler?

Well, I want to say to you and Bill that I like to look things up on here. It does take me a long time.

• 12:54Speaker 02

You're fact checking as it's going on. I think that's good.

• 12:57Amy Poehler?

Well, that, I kind of was joking that I had it to just make it seem like I was fact checking, but I'm.

• 13:03Speaker 02

  Have you ever used?

• 13:05Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 13:05Speaker 02

Okay, okay, okay. If it's just there for evidence, maybe.

• 13:09Amy Poehler?

What if I was just watch? While I'm talking to you, I just have to catch up on the pit.

• 13:18Speaker 02

Wait, is that, is that the medical procedural? Okay, great. With a guy who's already been on a medical procedural. Okay, great. It's supposed to be great.

• 13:27Amy Poehler?

  It's so good.

• 13:28Speaker 02

Okay, I gotta get into it.

• 13:29Amy Poehler?

And that's what I want to talk about.

• 13:30Speaker 02

  Okay, good.

• 13:31Amy Poehler?

  Just kidding.

• 13:31Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 13:32Amy Poehler?

  Well, I just-

• 13:32Speaker 02

I want to talk about paradise.

• 13:33Amy Poehler?

Dr. Carter, AKA Noah Wiley, is now in a new show, which is nothing like ER, but I'm a huge ER fan, but The Pit is so good. So because Bill told me to get rid of the laptop, I'm gonna put it at half mast.

• 13:45Speaker 02

  Oh, good.

• 13:48Amy Poehler?

And then if I need it, I, I do feel like I want to wa- I want to watch something with you today.

• 13:52Speaker 02

  Yes, keep it there.

• 13:54Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 13:54Speaker 02

  Yeah, half mast.

• 13:58Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 13:59Speaker 02

  Don't close it.

• 14:00Amy Poehler?

But I, but Bill, I hear you and I appreciate the, the, because it, look, I'm, I'm-

• 14:05Speaker 02

  Love Bill Simmons.

• 14:05Amy Poehler?

Love. And I, I have to say, I'm still trying to figure out the process of this. So I so appreciate you coming in mid-process.

• 14:12Speaker 02

  I'm so happy. I love mid-process.

• 14:15Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 14:15Speaker 02

  I do. I do, because it's still figuring itself out. So it, I, I like it. I don't like, I, it's better, it's more interesting than a well-oiled machine.

• 14:25Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 14:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:26Amy Poehler?

Tell me more about that, because you're so, you do, you, I love that about you, is you love the, the, the messy middle of stuff.

• 14:33Speaker 02

  I do, because it's like a, there is like a little on-your-toes

• 14:39Speaker 02

feeling of, of, of growth that's happening while you're in it. And that always feels like super-chargy to me. If it's like, I don't know, it's more, like, sometimes it's good and it's like, you know that you're gonna hit this, this, and this. But I, I love conversations, and I think, and I know you do too, that are like a little not-so-prescribed at the beginning.

• 15:02Amy Poehler?

You're so good at them. You're, you're, you're really, really good at hanging in.

• 15:07Speaker 02

  Ah, yeah.

• 15:09Amy Poehler?

It's what makes you such a good person and friend, but, and also such a good actor, is you, you can like tolerate the in-between, which few, I don't know if I can, I'm learning, I'm learning.

• 15:21Speaker 02

Yes. It is uncomfortable sometimes, depending on what it, it really is. But just to sit in it and let it, like, and I'm not talking about a podcast, but like life, or like schmacking.

• 15:33Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 15:33Speaker 02

It's definitely like, that, in that kind of like uncomfortableness, I think, is- Like the time that you're gonna be surprised.

• 15:42Amy Poehler?

Did you know that, let me see if you can guess how many times, how many episodes of Parks you did. Do you, would you know to guess?

• 15:49Speaker 02

I would say between seven and 13.

• 15:54Amy Poehler?

  10.

• 15:54Speaker 02

  10. Okay.

• 15:59Speaker 02

It's kind of right between. That's amazing. But it was such a huge impact on my life. Like, it's still a thing I get most recognized for.

• 16:09Amy Poehler?

  Really?

• 16:09Speaker 02

Yes. And I just remember, well, first of all, you were the most incredible number one on a call sheet because you had dance parties at lunch every day. And anybody that walked on that, like, set just was filled with such confidence and such joy, which is, I had the greatest time on that show.

• 16:30Amy Poehler?

I have such, I don't have the greatest memory.

• 16:32Speaker 02

That's where we kind of fell in love.

• 16:33Amy Poehler?

But that is, that's really, Catherine, where we, I think, actually met.

• 16:36Speaker 02

  Met.

• 16:37Amy Poehler?

My first kind of, like, real memory is in the trailer of Parks and Rec. And we used to, Catherine is talking about dance parties, and we used to do a thing where just, like, after lunch, we would play three songs.

• 16:49Speaker 02

  Best.

• 16:49Amy Poehler?

The great Autumn Butler, our makeup artist, had great taste in music, and we would just kind of dance around for two or three songs.

• 16:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, the best.

• 16:57Amy Poehler?

I think for me, a way to honestly just keep my energy up.

• 17:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:01Amy Poehler?

But it became a way to meet people in the trailer. And I remember two things I loved about you right away. How much you love to laugh. People that know you know that, like you.

• 17:13Speaker 02

If someone's gonna break in a scene, is this professional over here?

• 17:17Amy Poehler?

You know, I don't, do you think you break a lot?

• 17:19Speaker 02

I have to be really serious in my mind. Like, if I have, because if it starts to happen, it is tears.

• 17:27Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 17:27Speaker 02

  And mucus.

• 17:28Amy Poehler?

But you, I have seen you in bloopers, and you're hanging in.

• 17:32Speaker 02

  Yeah, I do hang in.

• 17:33Amy Poehler?

  You hang in.

• 17:34Speaker 02

  I do, yeah.

• 17:35Amy Poehler?

You, in fact, go in harder, I think, when people are about to.

• 17:39Speaker 02

I know it's a survival technique. I just have to dig in a little bit. I do. I go harder.

• 17:44Amy Poehler?

I feel like every time I've done a scene with you, you are so good at improvising. In fact, like a lot of your character on Parks and Rec, Jen Barkley's moments were improvised.

• 17:57Speaker 02

  Were they really?

• 17:58Amy Poehler?

Well, one of the favorites, one of TikTok and memes and gifs and gifs is poncho.

• 18:04Speaker 02

  Poncho was.

• 18:05Amy Poehler?

So let's talk about what happened. For people that have never seen that, what is it? What? Tell us what that scene was.

• 18:10Speaker 02

Well, I went to Ben and Leslie's house. I'm speaking as Jen Barkley, my character. I'm the first person.

• 18:16Amy Poehler?

Well, for people that aren't watching, she just transformed.

• 18:19Speaker 02

  I just transformed.

• 18:20Amy Poehler?

Her eyes turned dark and she's a completely different person.

• 18:22Speaker 02

Lot more hairspray. I went to their house. They have children. I am not into children at all. I wore a plastic poncho so that I wouldn't get any sticky fingers or crap all over me. And at some point, the kids rush by with paint, nail me with the paint. And it's some take, just to make you guys laugh, I don't even have any idea it was gonna be any. I just swung my arms open. I went poncho, poncho. And that really has become a good thing.

• 18:54Amy Poehler?

  It's like Batman's cape.

• 18:58Amy Poehler?

  I mean.

• 18:59Speaker 02

Oh, that was the best. Like I just wanted to make you guys laugh and just having so the energy was so loose. So I like, it's funny you say they're improvising. Again, I can do it if I know who I am. And like the given circumstances and like that, I feel like I feel really free in that department, but just.

• 19:17Amy Poehler?

Well, you know how like we, we were on set a lot and I would watch you work and I would say the same thing about Adam. And I wondered too, if it's because of your, both of your training, but I would watch the way you two worked.

• 19:30Amy Poehler?

And you would have a moment where you'd stay really, really loose. And but just right before the scene, and I can think of a couple of scenes, the great scene where Jen Barkley is telling Leslie, no, basically, you know, you have to start.

• 19:46Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 19:47Amy Poehler?

You have to start thinking bigger, which is a huge moment in the show. I love the writing in that scene.

• 19:52Speaker 02

  Oh, my God, that scene.

• 19:53Amy Poehler?

Mike Schur and the writers, like, I just love how they slowly took care of Leslie. And they sent people in to give her these messages. And Jen Barkley is just this, like, Gen X.

• 20:06Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:06Amy Poehler?

  Um, ballbuster.

• 20:08Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:08Amy Poehler?

Who, who kind of sees something that Leslie doesn't. Anyway, in that moment, when you're giving that speech, I remember very clearly, right before the scene, you just took a moment. And I think we joked about it later because I was like, it was like watching, it was watching a real actor.

• 20:29Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 20:31Amy Poehler?

Just staying one more second on Parks. Yes, please. Because I do think that it was such a formative time in my life, obviously, for many reasons, and one of them was meeting you, is what I always use that us as an example of is that you never know who you have yet to meet.

• 20:50Speaker 02

  No, yeah.

• 20:51Amy Poehler?

I think, you know, when you're in your 40s.

• 20:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:54Amy Poehler?

There's this feeling that you've pretty much, you have your old friends, your high school friends, you have maybe a partner and they're friends, you have your kid mom friends.

• 21:03Speaker 02

  Yeah, college, yeah.

• 21:04Amy Poehler?

College, yeah, you have like this, all these different groups of friends. And you think, I think I've met everybody that's going to be my close friends.

• 21:10Speaker 02

Yes, I have, I know, because sometimes those friends become just family. You know what I mean? As everybody grows and changes and like people, there's, they're so in my life, always, always, always, but we are very different people. I don't know what, you know? And you're right, there are people, like, I think even, I've been in a lot of projects where you get like intimate really fast and everybody says goodbye. But then there are certain people where you, I didn't anticipate this. Like I did, that was the, one of the pleasures for me too, is like, I did not anticipate that you would want to continue to be my friend.

• 21:49Amy Poehler?

  What?

• 21:50Speaker 02

After we did it. And then the fact that it's gotten like deeper and deeper. And like now, I don't know how to do it. I mean, like, I am so grateful for you in my life. We've like.

• 22:00Amy Poehler?

  We've been in the trenches.

• 22:01Speaker 02

  We've been in the trenches.

• 22:03Amy Poehler?

  We have.

• 22:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:04Amy Poehler?

We have like, we've been through a lot of tough times together. We've been very honest with each other.

• 22:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:10Amy Poehler?

We've like, I think we've really like taken great pains to see each other.

• 22:16Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah. Like we're, make it a priority.

• 22:20Amy Poehler?

And I mean, I know how I feel about how important that is for me, but what, but how, what, how are female friendships important to you? What do they do for you?

• 22:28Speaker 02

I think that the real female friends that I have, the deep ones are fewer than I thought I would have. Like the ones that are really, you know, have your back through anything. And there's a difference, like these, it's so important to have women in your life that aren't family to grow old with in a way that it's, like you said, feels very honest, but, and also hilarious, but also doesn't feel like we have to keep up any, anything together, like keep up any sort of like front. It just feels like, and also very affirming, like to walk into these next chapters together

• 23:11Speaker 02

just feels like it's not as terrifying.

• 23:14Amy Poehler?

  Yes. The witch's road.

• 23:16Speaker 02

  The witch's road.

• 23:18Amy Poehler?

  The coven.

• 23:20Speaker 02

  Yes. Coven on coven. Yes.

• 23:22Amy Poehler?

Yes. That's why, I mean, I, that is why when I watched that show, when I watched Agatha all along, um, uh, that was so moving. You just to get, basically you must hold hands with someone to go into the next step. And let's be honest, our female friendships and relationships are gonna, you know, with the exception, maybe our sibling relationships will probably last the longest.

• 23:44Speaker 02

I know, they will. And I think with my dear, dearest women friends, of which there are very few, that, that is such a source of comfort, just to be heard by another woman.

• 23:56Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 23:56Speaker 02

Without judgment, without like anything, but just.

• 24:01Speaker 02

  Um, love.

• 24:03Amy Poehler?

I know, I feel you. Uh, speaking of other women, um.

• 24:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:07Amy Poehler?

So we do this thing, uh, where we ask people before we have a guest to, um, chat about the guest. So like, I kind of like wanted.

• 24:16Speaker 02

  I want to like.

• 24:17Amy Poehler?

I love it. And we got Patti LuPone.

• 24:20Speaker 02

No, you did not. Oh my God. I was so excited. The Wolf. Patti, the Wolf.

• 24:30Amy Poehler?

  The Wolf.

• 24:31Speaker 02

  LuPone.

• 24:32Amy Poehler?

Oh, of course, the Wolf, of course.

• 24:36Speaker 02

Oh my God. I'm, this is gonna be the best.

• 24:39Amy Poehler?

  Well, first of all.

• 24:41Speaker 02

What if it was like, eh eh?

• 24:45Speaker 02

  Well, she can't sing, but.

• 24:47Amy Poehler?

Yeah, not talented. Um, no, she, she's so great.

• 24:51Speaker 02

  Isn't she? I know.

• 24:53Amy Poehler?

  Uh, talk about, you know.

• 24:55Speaker 02

  I know.

• 24:55Amy Poehler?

A new friend that I wanna, I mean, I feel like I keep, I have to stop telling her, or I have to stop asking her if we're friends. I just have to start believing that we are, but, um, anyway.

• 25:05Speaker 02

  Oh, doll.

• 25:06Amy Poehler?

  Call everyone doll.

• 25:07Speaker 02

You're right to have someone that is like in a different stage of our lives.

• 25:12Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 25:13Speaker 02

That you can, that is so real.

• 25:15Amy Poehler?

  Very.

• 25:16Speaker 02

  Very important.

• 25:17Amy Poehler?

I don't know about you, but I get very comfortable around.

• 25:20Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 25:21Amy Poehler?

Older women who are very bossy.

• 25:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:24Amy Poehler?

Um, because I get very relaxed.

• 25:28Speaker 02

  Yeah, we're in good hands.

• 25:29Amy Poehler?

We're in good hands and the, the few times that I've hung out with Patty, like she's like, we're going for a walk and she tells me what to buy and, and it's just.

• 25:40Amy Poehler?

Okay, so tell me about, about how you, was, was Agatha the first time you met her?

• 25:45Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 25:46Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 25:46Speaker 02

Um, and I remember when they said it was Patti LuPone, I was like, no. And then we, I met her at the first table read and she just came in with so many questions. Which of course, like she knew nothing about Marvel. I barely know anything about Marvel. So she was like, okay. And it was just all of these very detailed questions, but then she just forgot and it didn't matter. Like she was, she'll stay, she'll still be like, I don't know anything about Marvel.

• 26:12Amy Poehler?

She did. She, she told us that.

• 26:13Speaker 02

  She did.

• 26:14Amy Poehler?

She said, well, I don't know anything about, which I love. I mean, and also. And she said, you guys met at the table, Reed.

• 26:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:22Amy Poehler?

And Agatha was a really big circus to lead.

• 26:25Speaker 02

  Oh, yes.

• 26:26Amy Poehler?

And you had to do a lot of big stuff on there.

• 26:31Speaker 02

  A lot of swinging.

• 26:32Amy Poehler?

Oh, my gosh, so much, you know, if one is to believe that acting is a little embarrassing.

• 26:38Speaker 02

  Oh, right.

• 26:39Amy Poehler?

You had to do so much stuff, birthing scenes and crazy stuff.

• 26:45Speaker 02

  And holding hands and singing.

• 26:47Amy Poehler?

  Yes, so much incredible stuff.

• 26:50Speaker 02

But like walking in the razor's edge, because we knew if it went one way or the other, it could be like, oh, wow.

• 26:55Amy Poehler?

And America voted, and it worked. America voted. TikTok voted. TikTok is my government.

• 27:01Speaker 02

Okay, I know. I gotta get on TikTok.

• 27:05Amy Poehler?

  It's, I think it's wrapping up.

• 27:07Speaker 02

Oh, I know. It's my perfect timing, as usual. Still my AOL.

• 27:11Amy Poehler?

That's like me in podcasts. I'm like, let me get in there. And everyone's like, now? I'm like, yep, right before the door closes. But just for a second, what was it like to be on such a big show, making, having to make really big choices with all these incredibly big personalities and people? It was just, it must have been something.

• 27:29Speaker 02

We were all, there was no trailers to go back to, really, because we were kind of far away always. So we would set up like a little coven of our chairs in a circle. So like all of our crew chairs would be in a circle. And you could just hear us cackling like the whole, like, I mean, we just laughed. And Patty had a boombox and she would get up and like dance or start singing. And we would all be like, it's coming out of her mouth right now.

• 27:52Amy Poehler?

So Patty wanted me to ask you two questions. Well, first, she said she loves your snort, and we already got it. We already got it once.

• 28:00Speaker 02

I thought like, oh, it's not as cute anymore, but it still comes out.

• 28:03Amy Poehler?

I mean, you're talking to a person that laughs like a, I've been described as a raven, when a raven, when someone runs over a raven's foot. That's how somebody described my laugh one time. So, I mean, I don't know what you're talking about.

• 28:18Speaker 02

  It's the greatest laugh ever.

• 28:20Amy Poehler?

It's just, I have a very witchy laugh, too.

• 28:22Speaker 02

You have a very witchy laugh and a very, you do. And it's a cackle and a very devious laugh sometimes.

• 28:32Speaker 02

It's a little cackling in the mouth. I just love it so much because it hits like a little devious. And then huge cackles.

• 28:42Amy Poehler?

And you have a great laugh too. Like you laugh with your whole body.

• 28:45Speaker 02

  I do.

• 28:46Amy Poehler?

  You like.

• 28:47Speaker 02

I do. There she goes. But I really do. I do. I love a good laugh.

• 28:51Amy Poehler?

God, me too. Have you always been that way? Was that, where did, where, like, have you always been that kind of person that loved a good laugh?

• 28:58Speaker 02

In high school, it started for sure. And then I was like, you know, I went to an all-girls Catholic school. So we had like a, I mean, that group was constantly making fun of the nuns. And so I was just like crying all the time, just crying all the time, just like, ah, just floating maxi pads in the like the saint, in like Mary's pond. Like there's like a statue of Mary. We're just like, and the nuns would be like, okay, so there are maxi pads floating in the, it was like always shit like that.

• 29:30Amy Poehler?

Just like fun church giggle stuff.

• 29:32Speaker 02

Stupid. Like you'd open up a locker and there'd be like a huge dick that would pop out on a spring.

• 29:38Amy Poehler?

This proves my theory that Catholic school girls were A, so bad.

• 29:44Speaker 02

They were so bad. Well, because everything was, you know, uniforms and there was like church every week and it all felt like, I don't know if I believe in any of this.

• 29:51Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And then B, they were just like really ready to go.

• 29:56Speaker 02

Yeah, ready to go. Oh, I was like, let's go, let's go. And there were, I was like, any takers? Any takers? And there was not takers.

• 30:04Amy Poehler?

  On the street like, hey.

• 30:05Speaker 02

Horny. So horny. And I was like, okay. I was like, is it my overplucked eyebrows?

• 30:14Speaker 02

What's, what's happening? Is it my Catholic school uniform that my mom thought I was gonna gain maybe, or like seven dress sizes? But I was literally like, kids would go down and see my skirt and just pull it off me. Like in school. So we had to wear boxers.

• 30:29Amy Poehler?

Oh yeah, boxers were a big deal. That, wait, it was just an all-girls school?

• 30:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:33Amy Poehler?

  And they were pantsing you?

• 30:34Speaker 02

  Pantsing me.

• 30:36Amy Poehler?

  Skirting, they were skirting you.

• 30:37Speaker 02

In, in, I did go to Coed Catholic elementary school and we would have something called Friday Flip-Up Day. So we knew to wear boxers because on Friday, all the guys ran around and flipped up your skirt.

• 30:49Amy Poehler?

  Oh my God.

• 30:51Speaker 02

And Thursday Throw-Up Day, Wednesday Wedding Day, I don't know what Tuesday or Monday was.

• 30:56Amy Poehler?

And they would just flip up your skirt. And back then we were like. The price of being a girl.

• 31:00Speaker 02

It is. We were like, oh, we better get prepared.

• 31:03Amy Poehler?

We were like, maybe someone will flip up my skirt today.

• 31:06Speaker 02

So fucked up. So fucked up.

• 31:09Amy Poehler?

So fucked up. And, and the teachers were like, if you guys are doing the flip up, keep it outside of class.

• 31:15Speaker 02

I don't want to know about it. And then I remember some guy, some kid, I was in sixth grade, called me gorilla legs because I haven't shaved, I hadn't shaved my legs yet. And I was like horrified by that. So I went home and I tried to shave and it was like a cheese grater. It was like, I could see a curl of my skin before it started bleeding. And I was like, what's, oh, I still have scars.

• 31:35Amy Poehler?

  Oh, no.

• 31:36Speaker 02

I didn't, I didn't know how to do it. I went rogue with my dad's shaver in the tub.

• 31:41Amy Poehler?

Oh, no. Because of that stupid boy.

• 31:44Speaker 02

  It was that stupid boy.

• 31:45Amy Poehler?

I know. I had a stupid boy tell me one time that I look like a frog, that my face looked like a frog. And I just, I still think about it. I mean, I still remember it. I just remember being like, well, yeah. But you just get that thing where you're like, well, I guess I'll live the life of a frog, man. Like, you just immediately are like, well, if one boy thinks it, that, then it shall be so.

• 32:05Speaker 02

  Then it shall be so.

• 32:06Amy Poehler?

Yeah. I guess, well, I'll be, they'll just flip up my skirt and I'll wear my boxers and shave my legs in the bathtub and wear, have a face like a frog.

• 32:15Speaker 02

I mean, it's horrible. It's horrible. The shit I got for my nose my whole life.

• 32:20Amy Poehler?

Really? For the size of your nose?

• 32:22Speaker 02

Yes. And that I had such a, um, such a like thing about it that I was like, when I'm 18, I'm getting a nose job. And now I'm so glad that I did it.

• 32:31Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 32:32Speaker 02

Yeah. And now I love my nose.

• 32:34Amy Poehler?

I just think people should know that you have never gotten any plastic surgery, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I just.

• 32:39Speaker 02

But I think also, we, I feel that way with you, like.

• 32:43Amy Poehler?

  We're in a treacherous time.

• 32:44Speaker 02

This is a treacherous moment where you're like, have to leave behind all that currency that I really didn't, I wasn't, listen, I wasn't like. That wasn't my currency in this business was never like,

• 32:57Amy Poehler?

  Same.

• 32:57Speaker 02

Which I think is helpful going forward because it's not, but yeah, I'm like,

• 33:03Amy Poehler?

But now you've gotten into mother phase, you're Mother Han.

• 33:06Speaker 02

Now I'm Mother Han because honestly, this is my Instagram thing that I haven't used in the first five. I kind of petered out on the dumbest one. I just haven't done it again. I put it on my computer and yeah, I haven't posted it. Literally it's the dumbest last one. I don't even know what it is, but it was just petered out. And we tried, my daughter tried to find a name for me or like whatever handle. Is that what it's called?

• 33:32Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, I think so.

• 33:33Speaker 02

And we couldn't find anything with my name. And then we saw Mother Han lowercase and I was like, oh, that's funny. And she was like, you know, the other connotations though. And I was like, yeah, fine. I'll be cute. But then it has really a very, it does have a very specific following, which I love.

• 33:54Amy Poehler?

That's what I'm saying is there's this amazing moment that's happening for you in general where, you know, people that have loved your work now for 20 years are seeing you get this kind of next level of recognition and you know, all that comes with like the Marvel machine.

• 34:09Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 34:10Amy Poehler?

And there is this also celebration at the same time, led primarily by gay men, but not just gay men.

• 34:18Speaker 02

  And young gay women.

• 34:19Amy Poehler?

Young gay women who love the lesbian kiss that you had on Agatha with her beautiful Aubrey Plaza.

• 34:24Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 34:25Amy Poehler?

Like that are deciding to just be like, mother.

• 34:30Speaker 02

  I know.

• 34:31Amy Poehler?

And that feels like you're being anointed.

• 34:32Speaker 02

Which I'm like, it's Anne Bancroft in The Graduate. Like, that's what it feels like. There's like a cougar-y vibe.

• 34:39Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 34:39Speaker 02

Instead, but I also think that there's kind of like a, because I don't, I mean, that's not who I am, but I guess it also means like,

• 34:48Speaker 02

I don't know. What is, what do you think it means?

• 34:49Amy Poehler?

  I think it's like a way, yes.

• 34:52Speaker 02

  Like a guide?

• 34:53Amy Poehler?

  It's like a way to compliment someone's

• 34:58Amy Poehler?

wisdom and fortitude without making them, while still making them feel sexy.

• 35:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:03Amy Poehler?

There's something that feels sexy about it because it's very dom. It's very like, she will crush you. Like it's a little bit of like mother. Right.

• 35:15Amy Poehler?

Maybe you should have done Instagram, you should have been, you should have tried to spell that out. But, but also there's a reverence to it, like a respect. There's like, there's like a loving respect. I, again, someone else could probably break down the etymology and what it really means. And we all know where it comes back, goes back to like the houses and you know, like all the queer culture back.

• 35:35Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 35:36Amy Poehler?

Who are creating their own community and family.

• 35:38Speaker 02

I love it. It moves me so much.

• 35:41Amy Poehler?

Me too. And it's, and it's, it's just, there's some, something that's happening right now. I'm noticing in real time where women our age in our 50s in our business used to kind of just be on the way out. For the most part, there were few, but a lot of them were not really regarded by young people as being vital.

• 36:01Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 36:02Amy Poehler?

  Producers of things.

• 36:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:04Amy Poehler?

  And that is changing.

• 36:05Speaker 02

  It is changing.

• 36:06Amy Poehler?

  I never liked MILF.

• 36:08Speaker 02

  I hated MILF.

• 36:10Amy Poehler?

Me too. Why do we hate it?

• 36:12Speaker 02

Well, because it's a porn term, probably by a lot of, by a lot of young men that have a fetish for fucking older women.

• 36:21Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, I never.

• 36:22Speaker 02

  Mothers.

• 36:22Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And also I didn't like it because it was like, oh, you'll still fuck them?

• 36:26Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 36:27Amy Poehler?

  Uh, let me check.

• 36:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:29Amy Poehler?

They don't want to fuck you.

• 36:32Amy Poehler?

  I just checked.

• 36:33Speaker 02

  Gut check.

• 36:34Amy Poehler?

Gut check. Butt check and gut check.

• 36:36Speaker 02

Butt check. It's not happening for you too.

• 36:38Amy Poehler?

  It's like, oh, great.

• 36:40Speaker 02

I know. It was like, well, I've had a couple MILFs and it's like, oh God.

• 36:45Amy Poehler?

Maybe we don't like it too because it sounds like milk.

• 36:47Speaker 02

Yeah, maybe, maybe because, yeah, but it just feels like it's from the dude's point of view in like a gross porny way.

• 36:54Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Mother feels a little bit more.

• 36:56Speaker 02

  You respect it.

• 36:57Amy Poehler?

And it feels more gay adjacent, queer adjacent. So it feels a little.

• 37:03Speaker 02

Yeah. Which I love so much. I love it so much. I love the very young queer women that are

• 37:12Speaker 02

felt really. Like, loved Agatha all along. Like, that was such a huge part of our audience that was very, very moving.

• 37:20Amy Poehler?

I mean, you were the first gay Marvel kiss, right?

• 37:25Speaker 02

  I-

• 37:25Amy Poehler?

Queer Marvel kiss. I don't know.

• 37:27Speaker 02

  I think so.

• 37:28Amy Poehler?

I have a piece of paper. Let me see.

• 37:31Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 37:31Speaker 02

It's not on the- yeah. Oh.

• 37:33Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 37:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:34Amy Poehler?

The first Marvel lesbian kiss, according to this paper.

• 37:38Speaker 02

  That just flew in.

• 37:39Amy Poehler?

Hold on. It just floated down.

• 37:41Speaker 02

  From the sky.

• 37:42Amy Poehler?

It's coming from the sky. Here we go.

• 37:44Speaker 02

But yeah, that is pretty cool.

• 37:46Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, that's cool.

• 37:46Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's cool.

• 37:47Amy Poehler?

  That's cool.

• 37:48Speaker 02

And with Plaza. So it just could not be cooler.

• 37:50Amy Poehler?

I know, I know. Our beautiful baby Plaza.

• 37:54Amy Poehler?

What's going- and I'm aware of- as you're- as a therapist, I'm aware of the time. It's 11:48.

• 38:00Speaker 02

I am so fine with going.

• 38:03Amy Poehler?

Okay, okay. Just letting you know, because I'm gonna-

• 38:04Speaker 02

It's over. I never want this to end.

• 38:06Amy Poehler?

You have a long press day. And so I know you have to do a lot of talking. But- and you have to eat wings.

• 38:10Speaker 02

  I don't want to eat-

• 38:11Amy Poehler?

You have to eat hot wings. I'm so sorry I don't have wings.

• 38:13Speaker 02

I know, I should be prepping before my diarrhea kicks in, even thinking about it.

• 38:17Amy Poehler?

I have been asked to do that wings thing and-

• 38:19Speaker 02

You have it and you're like, no.

• 38:21Amy Poehler?

  I absolutely not.

• 38:22Speaker 02

I could say hate milk. So I don't know how I'm gonna do it.

• 38:25Amy Poehler?

This is gonna be a disaster for you.

• 38:26Speaker 02

No, it's gonna be. Someone said peanut butter on toast beforehand. Line your stomach.

• 38:30Amy Poehler?

The things we go through for press.

• 38:32Speaker 02

  I never know.

• 38:35Amy Poehler?

What do we have to do? We have to line our stomach?

• 38:39Amy Poehler?

How did this- how did this happen? How are we now doing- eating spicy things?

• 38:44Speaker 02

This- and spicier and spicier while being asked really interesting-

• 38:49Amy Poehler?

  Really interesting questions.

• 38:50Speaker 02

  Kind of personal questions.

• 38:51Amy Poehler?

Really great questions. But, um, but the way in which we're like, I guess-

• 38:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:56Amy Poehler?

I guess for this show, I gotta have diarrhea for four days.

• 38:59Speaker 02

For four days? Ring a fire. But I also- there's something about it that I was like, yes. Because it just felt so, um, so unique that it just- I don't know. It's gonna be hilarious.

• 39:12Amy Poehler?

This is a really good example of what we were talking about earlier. Like, you're like, this is gonna be fun. I'm into it. You're into the- the lack of control.

• 39:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:21Amy Poehler?

  And man-

• 39:22Speaker 02

Like, I'm like, am I gonna vomit? Am I gonna? I don't know. We actually do- that is actually Friday. But I have a lot- but other stuff to- but I am-

• 39:31Amy Poehler?

  Not today.

• 39:32Speaker 02

So I have a couple of days to prep my stomach.

• 39:33Amy Poehler?

  It's like a colonoscopy.

• 39:35Speaker 02

  I it is.

• 39:36Amy Poehler?

You're gonna have to start eating light.

• 39:37Speaker 02

But like in reverse, because I think I gotta line it as thick as possible. So there is no way, like my throat down to my colon has to just be lined.

• 39:47Amy Poehler?

  With bread.

• 39:48Speaker 02

Yogurt, peanut butter, and just bread shoved in there.

• 39:53Amy Poehler?

  Show business, baby.

• 39:54Speaker 02

  Show business.

• 39:55Amy Poehler?

That's what, that's why we got into show business, to do stuff like that, to just eat weird hot stuff.

• 40:01Speaker 02

  On camera.

• 40:02Amy Poehler?

  For free.

• 40:02Speaker 02

  For free.

• 40:04Amy Poehler?

Um, but we were talking a little bit about the like way in which you're getting received, like when you're out in public, that's a little overwhelming sometimes because of the fandom of it all. Like there's, you're in a machine now that's bigger than maybe some other ones. And we were kind of talking about that feeling of like having to take on other people's energy. And how do you balance the introversion and extroversion part of what we do?

• 40:27Speaker 02

  Well.

• 40:48Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 40:49Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 40:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, that's a good answer.

• 40:52Speaker 02

You know, we were talking about hot ones for a while.

• 40:55Amy Poehler?

  You got all.

• 40:56Speaker 02

I need a Pepsi DC. Um, okay, fans. No, it's, you know, you're, I mean, Marvel is a totally different machine. And I am so rarely recognized in my life, like, you know, I just walk out like, I don't think about it. So I'm like, you know, I had one meal with Carrie Kenny Silver, who I love so much. And she, someone came up to our table and was like, sorry, I have to tell you, I love you. And I think it's so hilarious you go out of the house looking like this.

• 41:30Speaker 02

I was like, oh, thank you.

• 41:35Amy Poehler?

My thing is when people go, can I tell you who you look like? And I'm always like, please don't.

• 41:40Speaker 02

  No.

• 41:41Amy Poehler?

  It is never.

• 41:42Speaker 02

  It's never gonna be great.

• 41:43Amy Poehler?

It's never gonna be great unless it's Scar Joe or something like it's never. And it's also so, it's always someone who is a hard 30 years older than who I am, which is fine, but okay. So let's talk about Philly Justice before we talk about the studio and then we'll be done.

• 42:00Speaker 02

Actually, one of the most, the thing I'm almost the most proud of.

• 42:03Amy Poehler?

Okay. Can you explain to people what we're talking about when we say Philly Justice?

• 42:06Speaker 02

Okay, when we were, there was a bunch of the Parks and Rec actors. It was Paul, Rudd, you, Rashida, Adam.

• 42:17Speaker 02

  And is that it?

• 42:18Amy Poehler?

Yep. Me, we, the, the original picture that Philly Justice was born out of was me, you, Rashida, Adam, and Rudd.

• 42:26Speaker 02

And it was, we had like business-y outfits on. I think we were going to court or something or like, so all of us had like very business-y. And I don't know whose idea was it, but we took a, it was, whose idea was it? But we were all in like, kind of staggered stares and what looked like the front of like a very, you know, a courthouse.

• 42:49Amy Poehler?

We, we pretended we were on a fake TV show in the nineties called Philly Justice. Or the early 2000s.

• 42:55Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 42:55Amy Poehler?

  All crossed our arms.

• 42:56Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 42:57Amy Poehler?

Then that became a text chain where we started pretending that we were, we were just pretending we had been texting each other.

• 43:05Speaker 02

Like as the actors from it, is the pilot gonna be picked up? It's like we were gonna do, like, we were all very excited. It was like a David Kelly-esque show. So there was like some cachet. It wasn't like a shitty show.

• 43:17Amy Poehler?

Right. Catherine is playing like a lawyer, question mark?

• 43:20Speaker 02

  Question mark.

• 43:21Amy Poehler?

We don't know. And who has, has a very tempestuous relationship with Angie Martinez, played by Rashida Jones.

• 43:29Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 43:29Amy Poehler?

  And.

• 43:30Speaker 02

  We're not sure.

• 43:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 43:31Speaker 02

  Lot of past.

• 43:32Amy Poehler?

Lot, I mean, I think you guys are lovers.

• 43:39Speaker 02

Amy, please excuse her. She knows not what she's doing.

• 43:44Amy Poehler?

Like, um, Robert Durst when he's guilty.

• 43:50Amy Poehler?

Sorry. Every time I bring up being, uh, your lesbian tendencies, you start burping and we're like,

• 43:59Amy Poehler?

but, uh, I mean, I remember thinking, I can't believe how lucky I am that I'm working with people who wanna also do this dumb thing.

• 44:08Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 44:09Amy Poehler?

Like, fun dumb things to me are a love language. That's a way of like, it's like proves like safety, I guess, that if you're relaxed enough to do fun dumb things and you're in the right place.

• 44:21Speaker 02

Yeah. And the more, the older and older I get, I feel like, just want that.

• 44:27Amy Poehler?

Yeah, like, nothing is that important.

• 44:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, right.

• 44:29Amy Poehler?

Um, great transition into your new show.

• 44:33Speaker 02

  And the studio.

• 44:34Amy Poehler?

But it is, the studio is fun dumb.

• 44:36Speaker 02

  It is fun.

• 44:37Amy Poehler?

And you mentioned Catherine O'Hara. Talk to us about the show and the cast.

• 44:41Speaker 02

I mean, Catherine O'Hara, another goddess that I couldn't believe. We've only have a couple of scenes in it, but I have gotten to know her, like, through the press thing and she is, like we were saying, like, what I wanna, like, that's how I wanna grow up.

• 44:52Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:52Speaker 02

Even though she's, you know, basically my aunt, but she, um, is, I mean, on camera and not off camera, like, just such a hu- a good egg. And it's Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Seth stars in it, and, um, they both wrote all the episodes and directed all the episodes with like one shot. They're all like oners or some invisible seams.

• 45:15Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 45:15Speaker 02

I know, but it's really incredible because we rehearsed each scene like a play. Like, we had to rehearse it gazillion times with the camera. And then know when the camera's gonna be on you and know like when to get out of the way for the camera, while still like try to keep eye contact. It was a, it was like a, the challenges were so fun and juicy. And, and also you knew that if you fucked up one line in it, you'd have to go back to the beginning. So like, the tension of everybody really added to the tension of this fictional studio, Continental Studios, that Seth Rogen just became the head of. And trying to save it, like, it can't keep it from the streamers and also the, like, balance between art and, um,

• 46:01Speaker 02

Money, like block, but he's a lover of film that just wants to make like, you know, Foxcatcher all the time. And they're like, you can't make it all the time. You have to make a Kool-Aid movie, you know? So it's like the tension between and it's Ike Barinholtz is in it, who's fricking hilarious. He's so good.

• 46:21Amy Poehler?

  The best.

• 46:21Speaker 02

Chase, We Wonders, Peach, hilarious. And Bryan Cranston has like, recording as the, um, the money guy on top of the studio. And, uh,

• 46:33Amy Poehler?

  Who do you play?

• 46:33Speaker 02

I play, um, the market, the head of marketing.

• 46:38Amy Poehler?

  Your look is incredible.

• 46:40Speaker 02

It is incredible. And I feel like there's a lot of humans in Hollywood that just dress label to label.

• 46:48Amy Poehler?

So she's just totally decked out.

• 46:50Speaker 02

Got a girl at Saks. Who will bring the shit to the office and she tries it on at lunch, has a tab, running, running tab at Saks.

• 46:58Amy Poehler?

  Nice.

• 46:59Speaker 02

And also probably, um, you know, what is it? That Dover Street Market, a lot of like, street brands.

• 47:07Amy Poehler?

She has big nails. I remember that, right?

• 47:09Speaker 02

  Long, long nails.

• 47:10Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 47:10Speaker 02

And no personal life. So it's all filling like a deep, empty hole.

• 47:16Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 47:17Speaker 02

That she gets, um, that she just lives at her job.

• 47:21Amy Poehler?

And is it a weekly thing or can we?

• 47:22Speaker 02

  It's weekly.

• 47:23Amy Poehler?

Okay, great. I have to say overall, I'm enjoying a more weekly thing because I feel like we binged too hard.

• 47:29Speaker 02

I do too. Yeah. And it gives me a headache and it also makes me feel like a little bit sick.

• 47:34Amy Poehler?

  The binging is too much.

• 47:35Speaker 02

It's too much. It's too much. And you lose the,

• 47:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 47:40Speaker 02

Swallowed at that time. I was like, three, I can't do three on your podcast. Yes. What is wrong with me?

• 47:47Amy Poehler?

  The rule of threes.

• 47:48Speaker 02

  It's the rule of threes.

• 47:49Amy Poehler?

You have to do one more burp for comedy.

• 47:52Speaker 02

Maybe that was the third and it was just. I swallowed it. And now it's just a hot, acidic mess.

• 47:58Amy Poehler?

There are people I know that listen to these things and they have a hard time like with whatever it's called. What's the word when you don't like mouth sounds?

• 48:06Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 48:07Amy Poehler?

  Misophonia.

• 48:08Speaker 02

  Misophonia.

• 48:09Amy Poehler?

Where they don't like the milky mouth sounds of people, which I understand.

• 48:13Speaker 02

  I understand it.

• 48:14Amy Poehler?

  I understand it.

• 48:15Speaker 02

The worst is when you're talking to someone and there's little white cream on the creases of their mouth. And then when they talk, you can hear like, and you just want to be like, slide them a glass of water.

• 48:24Amy Poehler?

You want to slide them. And I feel like this is the end of our interview because where are we back? We're back to water.

• 48:29Speaker 02

  We're back to water!

• 48:30Amy Poehler?

  I'm for it.

• 48:31Speaker 02

How badly do you have to pee?

• 48:33Amy Poehler?

Not at all. I've been peeing this whole time.

• 48:35Speaker 02

Oh, right. Next time, I'm gonna wear, just, I don't even know how it works. If there's an adult diaper, just a bucket.

• 48:41Amy Poehler?

No, you just pee. The thing, people don't tell you about podcasting.

• 48:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:44Amy Poehler?

Which I learned when I first started.

• 48:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:46Amy Poehler?

You pee anytime. You just pee in your seat. All of the men you're watching, they're constantly peeing. Just underneath their table.

• 48:54Speaker 02

  Gross. There's a stadium, buddy.

• 48:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 48:56Speaker 02

Or have you ever seen the women's version of that?

• 48:58Amy Poehler?

  I haven't.

• 48:59Speaker 02

  Ah!

• 49:00Amy Poehler?

  The women's version.

• 49:02Speaker 02

  When did you get it?

• 49:02Amy Poehler?

My friend gave it to me.

• 49:03Speaker 02

It's like a funnel because we could be like, meh!

• 49:05Amy Poehler?

  So.

• 49:06Speaker 02

It isn't like a straight shot.

• 49:08Amy Poehler?

Okay, keep it in my car.

• 49:09Speaker 02

Okay. I thought you were like, keep it in my pants.

• 49:11Amy Poehler?

I keep it, I keep it in my bed. No, it's a, it's a funnel that you, I would suggest getting it. You're supposed to use it for camping.

• 49:19Speaker 02

  I want to.

• 49:19Amy Poehler?

But I have it for my car. Because sometimes you're in traffic and it's, and it's, oh no. Like what?

• 49:24Speaker 02

Can you get that going while you're driving a car?

• 49:27Amy Poehler?

Well, I have never, I've, to be fair, I've never actually used it.

• 49:30Speaker 02

  Oh, okay.

• 49:31Amy Poehler?

  But this, knowing it's there.

• 49:33Speaker 02

I know. That you have a backup. Maybe also sometimes if there's a questionable gas station restroom.

• 49:38Amy Poehler?

I would rather cop a squat. I would rather pull over and pee.

• 49:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, I've done that before.

• 49:42Amy Poehler?

Than go to a gas, a gas station.

• 49:44Speaker 02

I've done that definitely in places that match, like the national parks where you like open the small one. It's just a hole.

• 49:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:51Speaker 02

I just think, I don't want to look at it.

• 49:53Amy Poehler?

I've just pulled over and opened up my car door and just peed.

• 49:58Speaker 02

  I think we all have.

• 50:00Amy Poehler?

I mean, what are you gonna do?

• 50:01Speaker 02

  What are you gonna do?

• 50:02Amy Poehler?

  Seriously.

• 50:03Speaker 02

No, no one wants a UTI.

• 50:04Amy Poehler?

And you can't be like a man and pee in a bottle like a, like an animal.

• 50:08Speaker 02

Have you ever been, there's some streets in New York City, I know this is getting long, but there's some streets in New York that are like, like the arteries for getting off the bridges or whatever, that if you walk down, it's like filled Coke bottles with urine.

• 50:22Amy Poehler?

  Men are so fucking disgusting.

• 50:24Speaker 02

But I have to tell you, okay, last thing.

• 50:25Amy Poehler?

  I'm so sorry.

• 50:26Speaker 02

Sometimes I'm like, women, lift up the frickin' seat.

• 50:29Amy Poehler?

  A hundred percent.

• 50:30Speaker 02

I'm like, I've sat so many times on other women's urine.

• 50:33Amy Poehler?

Women, you cannot pee on the seat to protect your own germs.

• 50:38Speaker 02

  I know.

• 50:39Amy Poehler?

Like, you can't not sit on a toilet seat so that I have to sit near pee.

• 50:44Speaker 02

Yes. Lift it up. It's disgusting.

• 50:47Amy Poehler?

Also, if you're really that weird about it.

• 50:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:50Amy Poehler?

Put toilet paper on the seat.

• 50:52Speaker 02

  They have things for you.

• 50:54Amy Poehler?

They have things. Don't squat on the seat, pee on it, and then leave.

• 50:58Speaker 02

  And then leave.

• 50:59Amy Poehler?

You know what? Women are disgusting too.

• 51:01Speaker 02

Or wipe it off with a, and you're like, I know you just tried to wipe it off, but it's still there, bitch.

• 51:07Amy Poehler?

You're talking to a gal who left signs in a, in a, when, I think it must've been when I was at SNL. I was like, who is peeing on this seat?

• 51:16Speaker 02

  Oh, yes.

• 51:17Amy Poehler?

I was like, hey, newsflash. This is a disaster for those that follow.

• 51:22Speaker 02

A restroom for a lot of women.

• 51:23Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:24Speaker 02

Well, last thing, growing up in Cleveland, we had faulty, um, what's it called? You know, when you flush a toilet.

• 51:32Amy Poehler?

  Oh, plumbing?

• 51:33Speaker 02

  Plumbing.

• 51:37Speaker 02

Ah, age. But my dad had a sign above the toilet that said, poop flush, wipe flush. Because if you put the poop and the, and the toilet paper in there, it would overflow immediately.

• 51:49Amy Poehler?

  Wipe flush.

• 51:50Speaker 02

Poop flush, wipe flush. I'm gonna leave you with that. Anywho.

• 51:54Amy Poehler?

But I think these are, I think these are important things to say.

• 51:56Speaker 02

  They are, they are.

• 51:57Amy Poehler?

  They are.

• 51:57Speaker 02

We don't talk about it, but these are, but also just women, lastly, lift up the seat.

• 52:02Amy Poehler?

  Just to clarify.

• 52:03Speaker 02

  Gives us a bad name.

• 52:04Amy Poehler?

You don't have to, you don't have to lift, yeah, don't, just sit on the seat.

• 52:08Speaker 02

Sit on it. Or if you don't feel like sitting on it, lift it.

• 52:11Amy Poehler?

  Sit on the seats.

• 52:13Speaker 02

  Sit on the seat.

• 52:14Amy Poehler?

  What, like, where are we?

• 52:15Speaker 02

That's why they, just where are we? You're so lucky to have a seat. There's a lot of people that just have to squat.

• 52:23Amy Poehler?

If someone ran for like Congress and their whole thing was sit on the seat, they'd win. They'd win. They'd win.

• 52:29Speaker 02

  They would win.

• 52:30Amy Poehler?

  Sit on the seat.

• 52:31Speaker 02

I'm gonna start making bumper stickers.

• 52:32Amy Poehler?

Okay, I'm asking, I'm asking a bunch of people, because you love to laugh, you have a great laugh. I'm asking a bunch of people, what are they doing right now to make themselves laugh? Like, what is the thing you're watching or doing or listening to? What cracks you up?

• 52:47Speaker 02

Um, my dog really cracks me up. He's such a little weenus. Everything, his name is Banjo, and he's such an idiot. He has a, he's such a mutt, and he has this tail that's always so high, so he's got a really aggressive asshole. And everything he does is so stupid that he makes me laugh so hard. He's a dingo. Like, everything he does is j-.

• 53:12Amy Poehler?

  What has he done?

• 53:13Speaker 02

He'll get outside and he'll do laps, like, back and forth as fast as he can from one side of the lawn to the other. Like, he won't stop. And he, he'll just have, he has this corn cob that he can chew, has a sound in it, and he'll just look at you and be like, "Ach, ach." Like, and you hear the horn going on for so long.

• 53:30Amy Poehler?

And so his anxiety is funny?

• 53:32Speaker 02

He has had a cone on for a third of his life. Because he constantly is eating something, or he'll look at you like, "Ah," there's this blood gushing out of his back leg, and I'm like, "Banjo!" He'll, he licked the skin off of his, his own little paw, because he just was stressed out. And then he keeps licking it, so he's had to, yeah, so.

• 53:54Amy Poehler?

Who would play Banjo in a movie if he was a human?

• 53:57Speaker 02

Oh. It would be. It would be, he's got a lot of, um, white male privilege. He is so blonde. It's not Patrick Schwarzenegger, because he's really great, but he has a vibe.

• 54:08Amy Poehler?

It's a young Leo, is really what it is.

• 54:10Speaker 02

  It's a young Leo.

• 54:11Amy Poehler?

  It's a young Leo. It's like, uh,

• 54:13Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 54:14Amy Poehler?

Uh, maybe it's the kid from, um, Baby Girl. What's his name?

• 54:18Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 54:19Amy Poehler?

  Right? His, uh,

• 54:20Speaker 02

  I don't know his name.

• 54:21Amy Poehler?

Fuck, we'll never know. We have a laptop, we can't figure it out. Harris Dickinson.

• 54:26Speaker 02

  Harris Dickinson.

• 54:27Amy Poehler?

  Maybe it's a Harris Dickinson?

• 54:28Speaker 02

Yeah, with a little more like, "I'll do whatever you say, but I can't, I forgot already."

• 54:37Speaker 02

His day focuses at 5 o'clock. That's the only thing he holds on to is dinner at 5. Everything else is chaos and all of a sudden at 4:45, he's like,

• 54:47Speaker 02

  I love him so much.

• 54:48Amy Poehler?

Good news, we just got, we just heard that Austin Butler is excited to read for Banjo.

• 54:52Speaker 02

  Oh, okay.

• 54:54Amy Poehler?

  So, maybe.

• 54:55Speaker 02

I'll put him out, I'm curious to see his tape.

• 54:58Amy Poehler?

I'd love to see him read.

• 54:59Speaker 02

I would love to see him read. I'd love to see him read. Can't wait to get the tape.

• 55:05Amy Poehler?

  Okay, love you.

• 55:06Speaker 02

  I love you so much!

• 55:07Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 55:10Amy Poehler?

Thank you to Catherine Hahn, our great hilarious friend. Man, that was so fun. She's so funny. And she was reminding us about dance parties, which we used to have on the set of Parks and Rec. And I want to remind you, you can always have your own. All you need is three songs, one other person, and, uh, and, and the, the, the want and need to have fun. So, uh, do it now. Let's start with Brass in Pocket by The Pretenders. Take it slow, warm up and stretch. Then go to Red Wine Supernova, Chapel Rowan. Sing all the lyrics really loudly and point to each other.

• 55:52Amy Poehler?

And then finish by going to the club with, uh, a little Rihanna. We found love in a hopeless place and pretend that you've lost your purse on the dance floor. And run around. Three songs is all you need to change your day. Thank you guys so much for listening to another episode. Um, thanks for hanging.
