Marc Maron

Legendary comedian and podcast pioneer Marc Maron joins Santino to talk about his brand-new HBO special PANICKED, finding the funny in fear, and how he’s managed to stay raw and relevant after 30+ years in the game. The two dive deep into comedy, grief, anxiety, creative burnout, and why Marc still can’t let go of control — even with a therapist. It’s unfiltered, emotional, sharp as hell, and occasionally way too real. 🎤 Watch Marc’s new HBO special PANICKED August 1st on Max 🔥 Subscribe for new Whiskey Ginger episodes every Friday 🎧 Full audio on Spotify, Apple & all podcast platforms 👕 Merch & tour: andrewsantino.com FOLLOW MARC: Instagram: @marcmaron Podcast: wtfpod.comT our & More: marcmaron.com FOLLOW SANTINO: Instagram: @cheetosantino TikTok: @cheetosantino #MarcMaron #PanickedHBO #WhiskeyGinger #AndrewSantino #ComedyPodcast #WTFPodcast #StandUpComedy #HBOComedy ==================================================== Sponsor Whiskey Ginger: https://public.liveread.io/media-kit/whiskeyginger SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS SQUARESPACE GET 10% OFF YOUR ORDER https://squarespace.com/whiskey ZOC DOCBOOK LOCAL DOCTORShttps://zocdoc.com/whiskey MONARCH MONEYPROMO CODE: WHISKEY https://monarchmoney.com ======================================= Follow Andrew Santino: https://www.instagram.com/cheetosantino/ https://twitter.com/CheetoSantino Follow Whiskey Ginger: https://www.instagram.com/whiskeygingerpodcast https://twitter.com/whiskeygingerpodcast Produced and edited by Joe Faria https://www.instagram.com/itsjoefaria Learn more about your ad choices. In here, we pour whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey.

• 1:05Speaker 03

Who are that creature in the ginger beard?

• 1:08Speaker 04

  It's dirty ginger.

• 1:09Speaker 03

Like vampires, the ginger gene is a curse.

• 1:11Speaker 04

Gingers are beautiful. You owe me $5 for the whiskey, $75 for the horse.

• 1:17Speaker 05

Gingers, oh hell no. This whiskey is excellent. Ginger, I like gingers.

• 1:24Andrew Santino?

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to Whiskey Ginger. My guest today is one of my favorite people on earth. I say that from my guest, but I mean it once again today. It's the return of Marc Maron. The last time you were on the show, which was many, many years ago, the numbers-

• 1:36Speaker 07

Weren't we doing it in the bathroom or somewhere?

• 1:38Andrew Santino?

We did it in my bathroom, yeah.

• 1:39Speaker 07

Weird, what was that storefront thing? I like the way you guys move up in studios. That place was like hot.

• 1:45Andrew Santino?

Yeah, but this is, this is still gross. It's nicer, but it's gross.

• 1:48Speaker 07

I like all of you have pictures of yourselves in many different ways. I just did Sickler's. I drove out to fucking Culver City.

• 1:55Andrew Santino?

You know why we have photos of ourselves? I just want to remember who I am. When I walk in here, this is like an ego.

• 2:00Speaker 07

  Is it fan art?

• 2:01Andrew Santino?

This is all fan art, yeah. It's all fan-made.

• 2:03Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 2:03Andrew Santino?

This was incredible. Ted Munn's made that years ago, and that was one of my favorite things I ever saw.

• 2:07Speaker 07

  That's great.

• 2:08Andrew Santino?

And as they shipped it, what do you think happened to that? Yeah, of course it broke.

• 2:11Speaker 07

  The tiles fell out.

• 2:12Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, tiles cracked.

• 2:13Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 2:14Andrew Santino?

I have it on video. I think we played it years ago. I have the video of the UPS guy throwing it on the ground.

• 2:19Speaker 07

  Really?

• 2:20Andrew Santino?

Fragile, all over, like fragile wrap, like 10 different ways. I have a video of him delivering it, tossing it.

• 2:25Speaker 07

You know, sometimes you build up resentment in a job. Either you're gonna spit on a sandwich, or you're gonna set the box down a little heavier than it should.

• 2:34Andrew Santino?

I don't blame the guy, but I knew him and he was cool.

• 2:36Speaker 07

  Well, yeah, he's your guy.

• 2:37Andrew Santino?

  He was my guy.

• 2:38Speaker 07

You know what I used to do with my guy, the, my FedEx guy, they, when they were delivering all that Liquid Death for a while?

• 2:43Andrew Santino?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:43Speaker 07

I couldn't even drink at all. I'm like, "Take a couple cases."

• 2:46Andrew Santino?

  He's like, "I don't want it."

• 2:47Speaker 07

  No, he took it.

• 2:48Andrew Santino?

  Oh, he did?

• 2:48Speaker 07

  Sure.

• 2:49Andrew Santino?

  He liked it?

• 2:49Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 2:50Andrew Santino?

No, we, we, I, my new Fed- not, my new Amazon guy is very cool.

• 2:55Speaker 07

  At your house?

• 2:56Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, very nice. Very nice.

• 2:58Speaker 07

They do alright at my house. I haven't had any problems with them. How the fuck do we need so much shit?

• 3:03Andrew Santino?

Yeah, we're buying too much shit.

• 3:04Speaker 07

I don't need, but it's so easy, and every day it's like a goddamn box party over there.

• 3:09Andrew Santino?

Yeah, what do we need? Everything.

• 3:10Speaker 07

But I don't do any shopping. Now I tried to go out into the brick and mortar world, buy stuff.

• 3:15Andrew Santino?

  It's impossible.

• 3:17Speaker 07

  It is.

• 3:17Andrew Santino?

What's there? No- nothing. If I need a knickknack, okay, how about this? I try.

• 3:22Speaker 07

  A knickknack?

• 3:22Andrew Santino?

If I need knickknacks, like if I need a...

• 3:25Speaker 07

Oh, you mean a knickknack? I thought it was a different type of pouch.

• 3:28Andrew Santino?

There is a new pouch called knickknack. It's actually fantastic.

• 3:30Speaker 07

They're lozenges. They're candies. They go, they, they go way too fast.

• 3:33Andrew Santino?

  I love them, though.

• 3:34Speaker 07

  You do?

• 3:35Andrew Santino?

  I ju- I chew them.

• 3:36Speaker 07

  Yeah, I know.

• 3:37Andrew Santino?

Like, can you ever finish a Tic Tac without biting into it?

• 3:39Speaker 07

  No.

• 3:39Andrew Santino?

  That's impossible.

• 3:40Speaker 07

But the guys from knickknack, I bought some, they're all natural.

• 3:43Andrew Santino?

They are. No, those are really good, but they only sell them in a few places here in the valley.

• 3:46Speaker 07

I don't even know what is in these.

• 3:49Andrew Santino?

Uh, fiberglass, they just found out.

• 3:50Speaker 07

  Is that true?

• 3:51Andrew Santino?

Z- Google this. Uh, Zinnies got caught putting in, there's, it's either microplastics or fiberglass are in Zinn's now. Which one is it? One of the two, one of the two good ones. But I mean, you're from an age where you breathe, you, you were inhaling fiberglass your whole life.

• 4:05Speaker 07

Sure, man. Asbestos. I'm an asbestos baby.

• 4:07Andrew Santino?

Isn't that kinda rad to think about?

• 4:08Speaker 07

  No.

• 4:09Andrew Santino?

Yeah. It can, it contains nicotine salt, but it can crystallize and appear to be small glass fragments.

• 4:15Speaker 07

  Right.

• 4:16Andrew Santino?

But it's not. It's just nicotine. But didn't they just go through a test?

• 4:18Speaker 07

Yeah, but that's the lie, because they used to do it in the, in the dip, to cut the gum.

• 4:21Andrew Santino?

Yeah, to slice you up so it gets in your bloodstream.

• 4:23Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 4:24Andrew Santino?

  Love it, dude.

• 4:25Speaker 02

Well, microplastics aren't everything, so they're probably in the end.

• 4:28Andrew Santino?

  Here it goes.

• 4:28Speaker 07

I think I'm self-generating microplastics at this point.

• 4:31Andrew Santino?

You're pushing them out to the world?

• 4:32Speaker 07

Yeah, small factory of microplastics. My body's now turned on me and it's manufacturing microplastics.

• 4:37Andrew Santino?

Your body's the best it's ever been. I will say, you're in the best shape I think I've ever seen you in.

• 4:41Speaker 07

  It's hurting me.

• 4:42Andrew Santino?

  No chance.

• 4:43Speaker 07

  Huh?

• 4:44Andrew Santino?

You're doing this for the show, but I know you're in great shape and you feel great when you wake up.

• 4:47Speaker 07

I feel horrible when I wake up.

• 4:48Andrew Santino?

  Why?

• 4:49Speaker 07

I feel like, did you ever see, uh, did you ever see, um, North Dallas Forty?

• 4:53Andrew Santino?

  Mm-mm.

• 4:54Speaker 07

With Nick Nolte, where he's a football player and he gets up and there's like a full two minutes of him just cracking shit?

• 5:00Andrew Santino?

  That's you?

• 5:00Speaker 07

Bending. Well, I, I, I feel a little beat up when I do a good workout.

• 5:04Andrew Santino?

That is a generation that I-

• 5:05Speaker 07

How much do you work out?

• 5:06Andrew Santino?

I work out three days a week.

• 5:08Speaker 07

  Right.

• 5:08Andrew Santino?

  If I'm lucky.

• 5:09Speaker 07

  Cardio?

• 5:10Andrew Santino?

I got a row machine. I row now.

• 5:12Speaker 07

  At home?

• 5:12Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 5:13Speaker 07

That's the saddest thing I've ever heard.

• 5:14Andrew Santino?

He brought it to my house.

• 5:15Speaker 07

  It's so sad.

• 5:15Andrew Santino?

  Honestly?

• 5:16Speaker 07

You just rowing in your house?

• 5:17Andrew Santino?

  It's so nice.

• 5:18Speaker 07

  No, I'm sure.

• 5:19Andrew Santino?

It's got a TV on it and I can watch whatever I want. You can put on a show, or you can do one of the, like, the, like, a hot dude being like, "Come on, dude, let's do it."

• 5:26Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 5:27Andrew Santino?

  That guy's on there.

• 5:27Speaker 07

  Do, do you stop and?

• 5:29Andrew Santino?

Once in a while. I slide in and out. It is so funny, my wife was like, "Which instructor are you gonna pick?" I'm like, "None of the girls."

• 5:35Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 5:36Andrew Santino?

I don't wanna, I don't wanna be like turned on, I don't wanna have like a boner while I row.

• 5:40Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 5:40Andrew Santino?

And then these beautiful women, I want a hot, cool guy.

• 5:43Speaker 07

  Sure.

• 5:43Andrew Santino?

Who I wish I could be, a hot, young, black, jacked, twenty-eight-year-old.

• 5:47Speaker 07

And then you just push back the feelings of the-

• 5:49Andrew Santino?

  Shove it down! Way down!

• 5:53Speaker 07

  That's not happening.

• 5:54Andrew Santino?

  No!

• 5:54Speaker 07

  It's not happening.

• 5:55Andrew Santino?

No way, dude. We're just getting strong together, brother. I'm rowing at the house because it's the, because going to the gym is a fucking nightmare.

• 6:02Speaker 07

  I don't know, I kinda, I, I like it.

• 6:05Andrew Santino?

  Me no gym.

• 6:05Speaker 07

Uh, cause Equinox is five minutes from my house.

• 6:08Andrew Santino?

  Well, if it's close.

• 6:09Speaker 07

And, but I just like looking at people, I like, you know, it distracts me, I like looking at the ladies.

• 6:15Andrew Santino?

  Nah, I can't do it.

• 6:16Speaker 07

  You can't?

• 6:17Andrew Santino?

I get turned off, but I don't like big groups of people anyway, like being in a room with a lot of people.

• 6:21Speaker 07

Really? It's a good job you picked.

• 6:22Andrew Santino?

And then, and then, and then I get nervous about working out in public because people go to the gym and some people, it's their- Existence. And I'm doing it wrong. I know I'm doing things not the right. I just don't want to be, I don't want people to see me working out.

• 6:37Speaker 07

I work out in a small, my, I have a trainer lady.

• 6:40Andrew Santino?

Oh dude, see this I can't do.

• 6:42Speaker 07

  You can't?

• 6:43Andrew Santino?

Taking direction? You of all people, you're so anti-authority. You can have someone tell you what to do?

• 6:48Speaker 07

No, it gets me to do it. Because like if I go, if I don't, she at least mixes it up. I just do full body shit. I'm not like today's legs. I mean, I do a whole thing. You know, each day I'm not looking to get ripped. I'm just looking to be good.

• 7:01Andrew Santino?

  Just be normal.

• 7:02Speaker 07

Yeah, or just be like fit.

• 7:04Andrew Santino?

Just because I'm not, I'm ignorant to it, I mean this?

• 7:07Speaker 07

  No.

• 7:07Andrew Santino?

I'm not fishing. What does that cost to have a person do that? I'm being genuine. I've never had a

• 7:12Speaker 07

That's a good question. And let me, I'd have to talk to my business manager.

• 7:16Andrew Santino?

  Woo!

• 7:16Speaker 07

  I'm kidding.

• 7:17Andrew Santino?

  I told you dude.

• 7:18Speaker 07

  It's a buck and a half dude.

• 7:19Andrew Santino?

  That's it?

• 7:19Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 7:20Andrew Santino?

  So 150 for an hour?

• 7:22Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 7:23Andrew Santino?

Now, do you have to tip these people too?

• 7:24Speaker 07

  No.

• 7:24Andrew Santino?

  It's a flat?

• 7:25Speaker 07

  No.

• 7:26Andrew Santino?

  Because it's a service?

• 7:27Speaker 07

  It's a service.

• 7:27Andrew Santino?

But of all services now, you have to tip on every service, so I feel like

• 7:30Speaker 07

No, no, no, no, no. Cause you know them eventually. And like, you know, we do, like, I'll do 10 at a time, so it doesn't feel, cause I don't like to spend a buck and a half on anything. Like even therapy, I'm back in therapy.

• 7:40Andrew Santino?

  It's 100 an hour, right?

• 7:42Speaker 07

  More!

• 7:42Andrew Santino?

  Mm-hmm.

• 7:43Speaker 07

Yeah, and I'm like, because there's no way, if you're like me, I'm not cheap, but I, I'm not used to, I don't love spending money. But um, but like, you're sort of like, do I really need this for this amount of money? I just talked to this guy and I felt like, I don't know if we got a lot done. It was nice talking to him.

• 7:57Andrew Santino?

How do you find a new therapist?

• 7:59Speaker 07

I'm, I ran into my old

• 8:00Andrew Santino?

Let's cut to a BetterHelp ad real fast.

• 8:02Speaker 07

  Yeah, do it.

• 8:03Andrew Santino?

  No.

• 8:03Speaker 07

Uh, I ran into my old therapist. And uh, who got me through uh, the relationship with the borderline lady. And he was at a show I did, cause he knows some guys I know, and I hadn't seen him a long time, didn't even think about it. And I saw him, I'm like, I think I, I need some uh, I need some help. I've got some obstacles.

• 8:20Andrew Santino?

  Gotta come back.

• 8:21Speaker 07

Like, well, I just gotta, for me, I get stuck in shit and I can't get out of it. In my head.

• 8:27Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 8:28Speaker 07

And I know there's everything pointing to the right thing to do, but there's just one thing that holds me back and I need him to, you know.

• 8:36Andrew Santino?

  Who's, what's the obstacle now?

• 8:37Speaker 07

Well, you know, just kind of moving on with the, you know, letting go of the podcast, changing my life a little bit. And just like, I get stuck in these, we all the same people all the time. We all have our patterns. But after a while, you're like, fuck this. How do I get out of this one?

• 8:51Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 8:52Speaker 07

  You don't have that?

• 8:53Andrew Santino?

I do, but I, um, I sadly use work to escape it.

• 8:57Speaker 07

Well, so you don't deal with it, you just avoid it?

• 8:59Andrew Santino?

  Yep.

• 9:00Speaker 07

Yeah, I mean, I'm, well, I'm old now. How old are you?

• 9:03Andrew Santino?

  Forty-one.

• 9:04Speaker 07

  Yeah, I'm sixty-one.

• 9:05Andrew Santino?

  Are you?

• 9:05Speaker 07

Yeah. So it's sort of like, you know, uh, I better fix this shit soon if I'm gonna have a good time.

• 9:11Andrew Santino?

But see, I figure you're pa- you're past fixing it. You know, it's almost like that piece of that house, it's, it's, just let it fall.

• 9:17Speaker 07

Well, that, I think that's with physical stuff, but with the mental stuff, what's weird is because so much of how we think generates what we do. Right? So there is a point where you're like, can I let that go and believe that I'm gonna be okay? Make different choices? Like I, when I grew up, I didn't work out all the time. Like today, I went to the fucking gym just to do cardio. And that's not my nature.

• 9:38Andrew Santino?

  Mm-mm.

• 9:38Speaker 07

Like, cause I get up and I'm like, I don't want to fucking do anything. I gotta drive to Culver City for what?

• 9:43Andrew Santino?

  For what?

• 9:43Speaker 07

So it was fun. But, um, he says hi.

• 9:47Andrew Santino?

I love that cat. It is fun.

• 9:49Speaker 07

  He's a good guy.

• 9:49Andrew Santino?

When you do it, it's fun.

• 9:50Speaker 07

Well, yeah, but like, but the gym wasn't, but going to Culver City to do Ryan's show was, that was fun.

• 9:55Andrew Santino?

  Well, what's the perfect day?

• 9:56Speaker 07

But the gym, it's like, like every part of me doesn't want to do it, but all of a sudden I'm like, well, I got the shorts on. This is happening outside myself. Not these ones, different shorts.

• 10:04Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 10:04Speaker 07

Yeah. And, uh, and I'm there and I'm doing it, but I don't, I don't love it.

• 10:08Andrew Santino?

No, but it's a, you have to. It's a part of, you know, you're supposed to.

• 10:11Speaker 07

That's a good thing. But there are things that I do with my brain that I don't have to do.

• 10:15Andrew Santino?

  Ah, yes.

• 10:16Speaker 07

Like I don't, I don't like to be filled with dread and panic about everything all the fucking time. You know what it takes for me just to let my brain not be like, oh shit, we gotta, we don't have anything to do.

• 10:27Andrew Santino?

  No.

• 10:28Speaker 07

No, I, I did a joke about that once. I did a, I, I did on Fallon where like I, I would wake up, literally it's like, oh fuck, I got it. And then you're like, I don't have to do anything. I don't have to do anything. But I have to push back that thing all the time.

• 10:40Andrew Santino?

What do you think that's from? Don't say being Jewish, cuz that's

• 10:43Speaker 07

No, you just said it. I don't even know, why would you bring that up? Is that a Jewish name?

• 10:47Andrew Santino?

  A hundred percent.

• 10:48Speaker 07

  I don't think so.

• 10:48Andrew Santino?

You know one Jewish person that it doesn't, isn't filled with anxiety?

• 10:51Speaker 07

Well, anxiety, this is an urgency thing, but it's a, it's a type of anxiety.

• 10:54Andrew Santino?

  Ah, sorry, urgent anxiety.

• 10:55Speaker 07

Yeah, there's a couple Jews I think aren't filled with anxiety.

• 10:58Andrew Santino?

  Give me one.

• 10:59Speaker 07

James Khan, wasn't filled with anxiety.

• 11:01Andrew Santino?

  He's dead.

• 11:01Speaker 07

  I know.

• 11:02Andrew Santino?

And yes, he was. I know his son very well. You're wrong.

• 11:04Speaker 07

His son's a little filled with anxiety.

• 11:07Speaker 07

  Who's Scott?

• 11:08Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 11:08Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 11:09Andrew Santino?

It generationally gets passed down. If you don't deal with your anxiety-

• 11:11Speaker 07

Well, generationally, if that's your dad, you're gonna be walking around going, "Ah, oh god, what's he gonna say?"

• 11:15Andrew Santino?

  Did I screw up?

• 11:16Speaker 07

  "Oh, is he mad?"

• 11:17Andrew Santino?

That's true. That is actually very true. What is the perfect Maron day then? Mark wakes up and what's Maron's perfect day? Literally, front to back.

• 11:26Speaker 07

I love, like, I've been, I like the coffee.

• 11:29Andrew Santino?

  Mm-hmm.

• 11:29Speaker 07

The first, like, I pulled out an old espresso machine, I'm doing that, trying to get the perfect espresso.

• 11:34Andrew Santino?

Did you go to drip for a while?

• 11:36Speaker 07

Not been on drip, I do, don't do drip, I do cone, but not pour over cone, not gay.

• 11:40Andrew Santino?

That's, no, no, no, it's right, it is, it is very-

• 11:42Speaker 07

Like the, you know, no, I just pour it right in, just, that's just the what I use.

• 11:46Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

• 11:46Speaker 07

  Is a cone.

• 11:47Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

• 11:47Speaker 07

And I make it pretty strong, and I've been getting coffee from the same company forever. I haven't had to buy coffee or soap in, like, over a decade.

• 11:53Andrew Santino?

What, they just give it to you for free?

• 11:54Speaker 07

Well, they were one of my first sponsors when I did a streaming show before streaming was possible.

• 11:58Andrew Santino?

Who is it? Do I know who this is?

• 11:59Speaker 07

  Justcoffee.coop.

• 12:00Andrew Santino?

  Justcoffee.coop.

• 12:02Speaker 07

And they, I used to do ads when we first started the podcast, when we came out of the, the Air America streaming show. They would, they were our only sponsor. They, they'd give us $400 a month and send us coffee, and we were just in it for the coffee.

• 12:14Andrew Santino?

  Pretty cool.

• 12:15Speaker 07

So when we started the podcast, when there was no way to make money, I just carried them over, and, uh, it had a much bigger audience, and I developed this catchphrase for them. It was like, I'd take a sip and I'd go, "Pow, I just shit my pants, justcoffee.coop." And like, and they were like, they, we got emails from them, and they were like, "We don't love it, but, you know, it's doing a lot for our business."

• 12:37Andrew Santino?

We appreciate it, it's terrible, but it is working.

• 12:39Speaker 07

We, we built their online business, and they've been sending me coffee, sending me coffee forever.

• 12:44Andrew Santino?

That's a marketing ploy that a marketing team could never strategize.

• 12:47Speaker 07

  Of course not.

• 12:47Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 12:48Speaker 07

It would, the people loved it. "Pow, I just shit my pants, justcoffee.coop."

• 12:54Andrew Santino?

  Full pot, full pot?

• 12:56Speaker 07

Sure, yeah, I do, I generally do the six cups of a pot and I go through that.

• 13:00Andrew Santino?

  God.

• 13:01Speaker 07

A perfect day for me, dude, really, it's just doing little shit. You know, like, like, even the, like, getting, I have this old espresso machine. It's a, it's a DeLonghi, it's a pretty good brand.

• 13:12Andrew Santino?

  Those are good.

• 13:12Speaker 07

But I got it like, years ago, for like, on sale at Macy's, for a hundred bucks. And this thing is a cheapo espresso machine, but it does the crema, it does the thing, with the little foam on top. And I'm like, I got lucky. But it's not all the time. So now I got this grinder, that has these special espresso settings. So now, a good morning for me, is making it, and if the crema doesn't happen, going, god, fuck! But I have the grinder, so I gotta try again till I get it. So I'm trying to get the measurements right, and that's a pretty exciting morning.

• 13:39Andrew Santino?

  That takes a couple hours.

• 13:40Speaker 07

Sure, man. Well, not a couple hours, and then, uh, what else do I like to do? Uh, I like to cook. That's nice.

• 13:46Andrew Santino?

You gonna cook a full breakfast? You don't have a breakfast guy.

• 13:48Speaker 07

No, what I'll do is, uh, uh, because of the vegan thing, like, I do this old school soy milk, Eden Soy. And I'll make oatmeal, and I'll put, uh, I'll put, uh, I'll cook it, blueberries, some flaxseed, ground flaxseed. And, uh, and I have this, uh, I grind down all these different kinds of nuts for the omegas, and put that in. So yeah, it's a pretty full breakfast, takes a lot of it.

• 14:09Andrew Santino?

Can you convince me to be vegan right now?

• 14:11Speaker 07

I don't know, it just depends how you feel or what you want.

• 14:14Andrew Santino?

Here's my thing, I like eating meat.

• 14:16Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 14:16Andrew Santino?

  But I don't care.

• 14:17Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 14:17Andrew Santino?

Do you know what I mean? Like, I love it, I've had a lot of it.

• 14:20Speaker 07

I've eaten all the meat I need to eat.

• 14:21Andrew Santino?

That's kinda how I feel, like, I'm, I, like, I've always said, like, Neil, when Brennan and I would go out to eat, cause he would take me to

• 14:27Speaker 07

  But I think I got-

• 14:28Andrew Santino?

veg places, not vegan, but vegetarian.

• 14:30Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 14:31Andrew Santino?

  And that I can do.

• 14:32Speaker 07

It's funny, like, it's weird with, I used to do a, a line where I said, uh, uh, like, be, it's, uh, being a vegan is an ideological eating disorder.

• 14:43Andrew Santino?

Hmm, it is, that is true, it really is, dude, it is.

• 14:47Speaker 07

So, you know, you look at, you look at Neil, and I wouldn't say he's a great poster child for anything. You know, like, you know, and he'll take that great person-

• 14:55Andrew Santino?

Great joke writing, great joke writing.

• 14:56Speaker 07

  Yeah, meticulous.

• 14:57Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, he's a joke, he's, that's, okay, so maybe-

• 14:59Speaker 07

To the point where you're like, I hope he doesn't fuck up a word, cause he could spiral out. I, I like Neil, and I know that everything I just said, there will be no way for him to let that roll off him.

• 15:10Andrew Santino?

He's gonna hate you for that.

• 15:11Speaker 07

Oh my god, I'm gonna have to, I'm gonna have to pay.

• 15:14Andrew Santino?

Not when you smile, the disposition is, is now different. When it, ten years ago, if you said that, it'd been a different-

• 15:19Speaker 07

Brendan was the only guy, it was funny. Like, I've known him since he was a kid, since he was a kid, like literally since he was a kid. I started comedy with his fucking brother.

• 15:27Andrew Santino?

  In New York, right?

• 15:28Speaker 07

Yeah, with Kevin. But, uh, but Brennan did my show once, did WTF, and he didn't, he said, "You can't put that out there." And I'm like, "Why?" And he said, "We, I don't think you treated me with the proper respect that I deserve at this point in my life."

• 15:40Andrew Santino?

  Oh, wow.

• 15:41Speaker 07

And you know what? He was right. He was right. Cause when I was in New York, he was this droopy little fucking kid with long hair, who would hang around, hand out flyers, wasn't even doing comedy. Just was around. And, you know, he's but getting to be buddies with Chappelle, but I always see him as that fucking little dork kid handing out flyers in fucking New York, so.

• 16:01Andrew Santino?

  Barking.

• 16:02Speaker 07

I have that attitude, like, "So, what are you up to?" "Go get your fucking shine box." You know? But he was right, and it, it did change our relationship.

• 16:11Andrew Santino?

I don't shine shoes no more.

• 16:12Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 16:12Andrew Santino?

And then. That's what ends up happening, dude. No, I, I know what you mean, though. It is hard, it's hard. I think that's the same way. I think that's the same way. I'm not taking a shot. But I think that's the same way Burr sees me sometimes, like, very little brother-y. He's, he was always very nice to me when I was a young comic. But even now, I think he still sees me as that twenty-six-year-old guy or whatever the, it's impos- I think it's just hard.

• 16:38Speaker 07

Like, you know, not, not to be, and this is, I don't think, I think what I said about Neil is funny, and it's true, and, and it worked out, and we're friends, you know?

• 16:46Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, you're fine.

• 16:46Speaker 07

But with Burr, it's sort of like, there are certain dudes I've known over the years, where it's just sort of like, "I'm, I'm not gonna be able to talk here."

• 16:58Andrew Santino?

You're not gonna get much out.

• 16:59Speaker 07

Nah, it's not gonna happen. You're just gonna wait it out, and, "You're right, yeah, yeah."

• 17:04Andrew Santino?

Some guys hold the room. He holds the room.

• 17:07Speaker 07

Yeah, but it, but there's a intensity to it. It's not just holding it like, "I love this story," you're like, "Is he mad?"

• 17:13Andrew Santino?

Yeah, yeah. No, that's, I never feel, that's what I'm saying. He, I think he looks at me as the young comic he knew, and then sometimes I think, "He fucking hates me." Or he likes me so much, he doesn't.

• 17:23Speaker 07

Him and I have had. Issues at times.

• 17:26Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 17:26Speaker 07

Where like he'll, we've, we've had real fights.

• 17:29Andrew Santino?

But you're very similar, that's the funniest part.

• 17:32Speaker 07

But like he, like a lot of people put things on me that aren't there because I'm just different.

• 17:36Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

• 17:37Speaker 07

You're like, you know, they're like, you know, whether I'm liberal or whatever it is, which I, which I am.

• 17:42Andrew Santino?

  Mm-hmm.

• 17:42Speaker 07

But like these fights will happen. There was one in the main room, dressing room, and Jezulnik was there and somebody else was there. And Bill was just, you know, yelling at me about due process, you know, with a me too'd guy.

• 17:54Andrew Santino?

  Okay.

• 17:54Speaker 07

And, and I'm like, you know, and he's yelling at me, he's like, there's, there's no due process, and you're like, and I'm like, but you know. Him.

• 18:04Speaker 07

He's like, yeah, but fuck that, you know, there's no, like, and it was like uncomfortable and, and, and the thing is with me, I'm not gonna get in a fistfight, but I'm, but I'm not, I'm gonna stand my ground.

• 18:14Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

• 18:14Speaker 07

And, and, and take the shot.

• 18:16Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 18:17Speaker 07

If someone's gonna hit me, they're gonna hit me. I'm not gonna start it, but I'm not gonna run off. So now I'm in this thing with Burr where I'm like, what am I gonna walk out of the room? I can't walk out of the room. I'm gonna have to fucking just be, be in this.

• 18:27Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, handle it.

• 18:28Speaker 07

And, uh, you know, Jezulnik is, like everyone's, it's one of those moments where mom and dad are fighting and no one knows. And then like two minutes later, you know, the, uh, one of them comes in, you go, can I get a picture? And I'm like, you know, with, with Dan or whoever, and you know, and Burr's like, he's like, yeah, you know, you're right, I'm sorry. I mean, maybe I should, you know, believe the women occasionally. And I'm like, alright, well, so that was totally unnecessary. And now, now, now it's gonna, it's gonna be weird for at least a couple of weeks, even if you apologize right after. What are you, my dad? You're gonna yell and I'm gonna cry and then you're gonna come into my bedroom before I go to sleep? I'm like, you're alright, right? You're, I'm sorry.

• 19:01Andrew Santino?

  I've lived that, yeah.

• 19:02Speaker 07

Yeah, yeah, it's like, okay, yeah, I guess I'm okay, but that still happened, you fuck.

• 19:08Andrew Santino?

What does it go back to? People are complicated.

• 19:11Speaker 07

  Totally.

• 19:11Andrew Santino?

That's the thing, we're all fucking fucked up, especially because we're, this is a nightmare career and it's gonna, it's genuinely going to make you the worst version of yourself sometimes.

• 19:23Speaker 07

I think it's, I, I think what it is really is that none of us could function in real life.

• 19:28Andrew Santino?

  No, we try.

• 19:29Speaker 07

And, and some of us, for a little while, when we're younger, so, you know, this was the, that was, that's what bothers me about. Generational issues in comedy. It's like, this was a business where we could all decide our own shit. And do it the way we wanted to do, and have our own voice, have our own style, and do the thing that made us, you know, because we couldn't do anything else. And we wanted to do this, and we're all unique, but back in the day, it's like half of them were borderline outlaws. I mean, they were like fucking criminals. And they're just getting away with something. I worked with guys that wouldn't want to be in the paper because they didn't want to pay their taxes. And they were afraid they were gonna get caught.

• 20:10Andrew Santino?

  That's just real shit.

• 20:11Speaker 07

Yeah. But on some level, it's like preaching or anything else. It's like, how do I get away with something? But, you know, we're artists and I get all that. But it bothers me now that nobody... There is a way to own yourself in this business. And by doing five-minute crowd work videos where you're just asking people if they're, how long they've been together, you know, like a moron could do that. So like, so how do you develop your voice?

• 20:35Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 20:36Speaker 07

I mean, it used to be about like, you're trying to figure out who you are up there. Now it's just sort of like, I just want to get people to come see me, you know, talk to them.

• 20:43Andrew Santino?

I want people to see me talk.

• 20:45Speaker 07

  But that's different.

• 20:46Andrew Santino?

That is how it boils down.

• 20:47Speaker 07

I want people to come see me talk is different than, I want people to come see me talk to them.

• 20:52Andrew Santino?

Right, yeah, well, that's the hardest part. And people want it now. Whenever I travel now, they really want to be a part of the show.

• 20:57Speaker 07

  But...

• 20:58Andrew Santino?

And it's not the audience's fault. That's all they've been shown now. So now they want to be a part of the show, and it's not their fault. They just see it and they think, this is what's going on.

• 21:06Speaker 07

To me, it was always like, you had to know how to do crowd work to manage a fucking problem.

• 21:11Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 21:11Speaker 07

It wasn't like some good time. It was like, what's this fucking idiot doing?

• 21:16Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 21:16Speaker 07

And then you deal with it. You know, because like, you know, when you work at a club and they're like, when do you want us to step in? I'm like, I'll let you know.

• 21:23Andrew Santino?

  You'll know.

• 21:24Speaker 07

Yeah, because I'll be like, I've had enough. You're fucking out.

• 21:27Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 21:28Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 21:30Andrew Santino?

I've only had to kick out a few people, but it's been... I've let people go pretty far, where I'm like, alright man, you have... Especially because the... Sometimes the people are like, "Sorry man, fuck, I just love you." And you're like, "I know you do, man, but you gotta cut it out. You gotta cut it the fuck out."

• 21:45Speaker 07

  Oh no, I...

• 21:46Andrew Santino?

  It drives me nuts.

• 21:47Speaker 07

  That always happens, there's like...

• 21:48Andrew Santino?

They probably like you the most. That's the guy that yells the most.

• 21:51Speaker 07

Yeah, or like, for me, what used to happen, because my audience, you know, they're usually grownups and pretty decent people, but they're so used to hearing me talk, like, I get people in the front row, and I'd be doing bits, and they'd be like, "Oh yeah, that happened to me." I'm like, "This is not... It's a planned thing."

• 22:07Andrew Santino?

Like you're on a bus together?

• 22:08Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:09Andrew Santino?

Yeah, no, I know what that's like, yeah.

• 22:10Speaker 07

I understand that, like, you know, you're right here, right?

• 22:12Andrew Santino?

But they probably love... The funniest part when somebody goes... When I see an audience member that's like, mm, like, relatable, but not really laughing out loud, I know in my heart, they're having the most fun. Because they're like, "Oh, I relate to all this, it's great."

• 22:23Speaker 07

  They really do.

• 22:24Andrew Santino?

"I feel this way." They just don't know how to let it rip.

• 22:28Speaker 07

Usually my crowd work, you know, generally, because I can do it, you know, and sometimes interesting things happen. The best thing that can happen to me in crowd work, because if I'm doing it, I'm angry.

• 22:38Andrew Santino?

  Oh yeah, I've seen it.

• 22:39Speaker 07

Like, you know, "Would you shut up, drunky?" That's a favorite.

• 22:43Andrew Santino?

  That's an old throwback.

• 22:45Speaker 07

Yeah, but, uh, but what happens generally is, I'm the funniest if I get handed my ass by the crowd. And so it's really not your plan. But, but if, if, if I get mad at somebody and they're like, "No, I was just..." you know, and then I'm all of a sudden like, "Alright, I'm sorry," and then, so that gets me in a good zone.

• 23:02Andrew Santino?

Yeah, that gets you... Well, with your crowd, with your crowd, huh? With his crowd, the crowd work is usually like, "Is that guy okay? Call an ambulance?" Dude, I had a guy had a heart attack at Zany's. Did I tell you that story? A guy had a heart attack in the balcony at Zany's in Nashville.

• 23:17Speaker 07

I've had, I've had that happen and they don't tell me. Like, they don't tell me till I'm after the show. Like, they had to take him to the hospital.

• 23:22Andrew Santino?

They just quietly let the show happen?

• 23:24Speaker 07

Well, it happens somewhere in the back, and it's handled, but then someone's like, "Yeah, someone had to be taken to the hospital." I'm like, "What happened?"

• 23:31Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, "Is he okay?"

• 23:32Speaker 07

Yeah, that kind of stuff. I had, I had to stop a show at the Comedy Store because someone went down.

• 23:37Andrew Santino?

In, in the OR or main?

• 23:38Speaker 07

In the main room, in the front, some guy just went over. And I'm like, alright, so when is, when is this funny?

• 23:44Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 23:44Speaker 07

Yeah, how long do I wait?

• 23:46Andrew Santino?

  When is it okay?

• 23:47Speaker 07

Yeah, yeah, yeah, because they're dealing with him, and he just passed out, and I'm like, so now I can bust your ball? You know, you like-

• 23:52Andrew Santino?

Yeah, that's fine. If he just passes, also, by the way, how anxiety inducing, after a guy passes out, and then you're like, alright, your next comic, Brad, will you, like, you have to bring out someone for that fucking nightmare?

• 24:02Speaker 07

As you're passing, I'm like, the guy, he's-

• 24:03Andrew Santino?

That guy almost died in the front.

• 24:04Speaker 07

They're working on another, they're doing a CPR.

• 24:06Andrew Santino?

  They're working on him, they're, they're calling, it's fine.

• 24:08Speaker 07

Yeah, it's, it's fine, just, it's just right, stage right.

• 24:10Andrew Santino?

Just move, move the other side. Yeah, they had a guy in Zany's in the balcony, and I felt so bad, and then, of course, you gotta like, continue the show, because at some point-

• 24:18Speaker 07

It's interesting when you have to manage that stuff, and come back from it.

• 24:21Andrew Santino?

That's real crowd work, that was hard, that's an actual like-

• 24:24Speaker 07

  That's right, that's management.

• 24:25Andrew Santino?

I had to tease it a little bit.

• 24:26Speaker 07

That's why you need, that's why you need the tools.

• 24:28Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, you need that.

• 24:28Speaker 07

It shouldn't be your whole life.

• 24:29Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 24:30Speaker 07

You know, did I tell you that story about the, uh, bachelorette party?

• 24:33Andrew Santino?

  Mm-mm.

• 24:33Speaker 07

That, that was the best one.

• 24:34Andrew Santino?

  What?

• 24:35Speaker 07

It was just a classic. You know, I'm, I'm, I'm in Denver, and that's a hot room, it's the best.

• 24:41Andrew Santino?

  Downtown, too.

• 24:42Speaker 07

It's almost like cheating, you know?

• 24:43Andrew Santino?

It feel, it feels like a layup.

• 24:45Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 24:45Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 24:46Speaker 07

And, but like, it had been a while since I've been there, and my crowd is specific. And usually I sell out, because I, I'll do a bunch of shows there to work out shit, but it's my people, and they're nice people. And I get there, and I'm ready to put for them for my crowd, and they're like, there's a bachelot, bachelorette party, I'm like, god damn it.

• 25:02Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 25:02Speaker 07

And I'm not a diva, I'm like, I just, I don't want to fucking babysit them, I don't want to fucking deal with this shit, because I got people that come to see me, and I gotta fucking deal with the girl with the dick hat on, for how long?

• 25:14Andrew Santino?

  Oh, yeah.

• 25:15Speaker 07

And, and I was like, I was kinda mad about it, I was like, and I'm not like this, I'm like, just keep an eye on them, because I really, you know, my people are here, and I want to do a good show. But needless to say, after all that fucking diving, right, I get out there, I'm like, what do you fucking need? You know, like, what are we doing? Uh, do all the jokes, same cock for the rest of your life, yeah, but whatever. And I just fucking lay in heavy. And I'm like, are you good? Are you, did you get what you needed out of this? Because I want to do the show now. And then at some point, I don't know, I don't know why I didn't see it, but, um, they kicked one of them out.

• 25:48Andrew Santino?

Oh, yeah, yeah, saw that, saw that coming.

• 25:50Speaker 07

And after the show, it was a fine show, and after the show, I'm out front, and the bride comes up to me. And I'm like, everything alright, did you guys have a good night? And she says, they, they kicked out my mom.

• 26:01Andrew Santino?

  No way!

• 26:04Speaker 07

And I'm like, that's the best basher at party ever.

• 26:06Andrew Santino?

That's awesome. All these girls are, they're like, we're actually huge fans. My mom was the one that was.

• 26:10Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah.

• 26:11Andrew Santino?

They're quiet the whole show. That's so funny. The oldest woman in there is like, show your cock, Marin. Mom, you're ruining this for us. Denver, I've had, I had a guy too high on mushrooms that needed to be excused. He actually said, he actually voiced it, which I thought was pretty brave.

• 26:26Speaker 07

  I gotta go.

• 26:27Andrew Santino?

He was in the front laughing, having like in that little front low bowl. He was like losing his mind. Then he kind of was like freaking out a little bit. And I was like, are you okay, dude? Are you okay? And his buddy was like, dude, this is so fucked up by mushrooms. And I was like, do you want to walk outside for a little while? And he's like, is that cool? I was like, yeah, man, go ahead. It was so polite, like, it was such a polite heckle removal.

• 26:45Speaker 07

Well, Denver with the altitude and with the legal dope, with the pot, it's fucking nuts.

• 26:49Andrew Santino?

  Absurd.

• 26:49Speaker 07

I did, I was there one weekend and Benson, Doug Benson, did his 420 show in the afternoon.

• 26:54Andrew Santino?

  Oh, yeah.

• 26:55Speaker 07

Two people had to be taken out with ambulances.

• 26:57Andrew Santino?

Get too ripped. They get way too ripped. By the way, I did his show one time.

• 27:01Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 27:01Andrew Santino?

And I had such a panic attack. I got so high on camera with him.

• 27:05Speaker 07

  Oh, yeah.

• 27:05Andrew Santino?

That I was like, I don't ever, I can never do that ever again.

• 27:07Speaker 07

  No.

• 27:07Andrew Santino?

Cause he's an expert. I'm not.

• 27:09Speaker 07

I don't know how he does it. There's some dudes like him and Proops that just live on the weed and it's.

• 27:12Andrew Santino?

  So, I can't do it.

• 27:14Speaker 07

Back in the day in San Francisco, one time we had to do a, the Alex Bennett Show was a morning show.

• 27:19Andrew Santino?

  Mm-hmm.

• 27:19Speaker 07

And it was, you know, comics and, and, you know, they do them at clubs or different locations in the morning, like six to nine.

• 27:26Andrew Santino?

  Jesus.

• 27:27Speaker 07

  Live, radio.

• 27:28Andrew Santino?

  Uh-uh.

• 27:28Speaker 07

And we were at Cobb's, the old Cobb's, and it was me and Proops and Warren Thomas, I think Matt Weinhold, the whole crew. He had a lot of comics on. And it's like, what, six, seven in the morning and Proops is like, you want to go? And I'm like, alright, fuck it. I mean, whatever.

• 27:43Andrew Santino?

  Why not?

• 27:43Speaker 07

Comedian, it's my job. And, but it was before, but he always got the really good dope. So I get high and I'm like incapacitated.

• 27:50Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 27:51Speaker 07

I mean, and I'm like, and we're in a live audience and there's a bunch of us up there and Greg knows I'm incapacitated. He's like, what do you think, Mark? And I'm like, ah, yeah, I couldn't fucking talk. And, and then in the middle of it, he leans over, he goes, I invented you.

• 28:07Andrew Santino?

  What the fuck? What the?

• 28:09Speaker 07

  Fuck.

• 28:10Andrew Santino?

  That's so good.

• 28:11Speaker 07

  It was.

• 28:11Andrew Santino?

Diabolical, just to get deep inside of your little brain.

• 28:14Speaker 07

  You're a little like that, aren't you?

• 28:15Andrew Santino?

Yeah, I like to get to your brain.

• 28:17Speaker 07

  Oh, my God.

• 28:17Andrew Santino?

I like to dig deep inside that thing and see what's really going on.

• 28:20Speaker 07

I don't know, like, if I was thinking about coming over here, like, before we knew each other that well.

• 28:24Andrew Santino?

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:25Speaker 07

Well, you got me back on nicotine, but I I I enjoy telling that story because I I volunteered, you know?

• 28:29Andrew Santino?

That was your fault, not mine.

• 28:31Speaker 07

  Not really.

• 28:31Andrew Santino?

  You wanted it so bad.

• 28:32Speaker 07

I know, but I wasn't gonna do it unless you did, unless you pushed me over the top.

• 28:35Andrew Santino?

Mark and I got back in, uh, Mark, I got Mark on nicotine to get in Vancouver. I said, no, you said, you said.

• 28:42Speaker 07

I've been off nicotine for like three years.

• 28:44Andrew Santino?

You said, man, I'd really love.

• 28:47Speaker 07

  Cubans?

• 28:47Andrew Santino?

  A cigar.

• 28:48Speaker 07

Some, because you can get Cubans.

• 28:49Andrew Santino?

And I said, we can get them. And you go.

• 28:51Speaker 07

  Nah.

• 28:51Andrew Santino?

No, no, no. And I go, we can.

• 28:53Speaker 07

And then I said, if I do, within two weeks, I'll be up to two or three a day, and I'm just sitting on my porch sweating.

• 28:59Andrew Santino?

  And you did.

• 28:59Speaker 07

And you're like, yeah, but. And I'm like, all right.

• 29:03Andrew Santino?

I would never do it with something that was like, if it was drugs or alcohol, no. But you said, man, I really miss having a cigar. And I said, it's a little pleasure.

• 29:11Speaker 07

Yeah, this is that, that's the tone. I mean, what, what's the big deal?

• 29:16Andrew Santino?

  I was like, it's a nice little pleasure, it's just a cigar.

• 29:18Speaker 07

Sure enough, I'm still on it.

• 29:21Andrew Santino?

But it's didn't collapse your life, it probably added something to your life, didn't it?

• 29:24Speaker 07

  I do like them.

• 29:25Andrew Santino?

  Don't you love them?

• 29:26Speaker 07

  Yeah, but like.

• 29:27Andrew Santino?

At the end of a long day?

• 29:28Speaker 07

Why, I just, that's another, middle of the day, why the end of a day? What kind of life are you living?

• 29:32Andrew Santino?

You know why I like the end of the day?

• 29:33Speaker 07

  Why?

• 29:33Andrew Santino?

Sunset to me is like, it's like a, go ahead.

• 29:36Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 29:37Andrew Santino?

  It's like a little signal.

• 29:38Speaker 07

Sure, but then two hours later, you're like, fuck, I got a spot at the store.

• 29:40Andrew Santino?

Oh, and I, yeah, that is true, that is very true.

• 30:15Speaker 01

• 33:05Andrew Santino?

You like fucking with people. Yes, you do.

• 33:07Speaker 07

I do, but not like, not like said, like I, I'll do it differently. Like I won't do it like, it's not always on purpose.

• 33:14Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, you're accidentally.

• 33:16Speaker 07

Well, it's, it's just sort of like mines are in the spectrum of like, you're gonna wear that shirt? Not, you know, not.

• 33:21Andrew Santino?

When I hear you do that stuff to people, when Mark says stuff, it's such a, like a tiny little slight and.

• 33:27Speaker 07

  Slight, it's very slight.

• 33:28Andrew Santino?

But people, but the problem with you, when you say stuff like that, your, your demeanor is so serious that people are like, fuck, he means that. And it hurts. You're able to do that in a way that gets to people where.

• 33:39Speaker 07

But I try to do, just do with people I know.

• 33:42Andrew Santino?

You do it sometimes, people you, you don't know that well.

• 33:44Speaker 07

I like saw Fahim the other, Fahim the other night, who I love, and I think he's hilarious.

• 33:48Andrew Santino?

  He is.

• 33:48Speaker 07

And, you know, he was doing some produced main room show and I watched for a few minutes. And I saw him in the hallway. I'm like, so you do like, you getting paid for that one or?

• 33:59Andrew Santino?

See, that hurts. That hurts, dude. And you know what's so funny? Fahim will call me on the way home and be like, dude, Maron said some wild shit to me. That kind of fucked me up a little bit. You have the ability to do that. It drives me nuts. But I think this is the thing that's missing. That I love about the store was always this kind of competitive, fun, pokey. Now I don't, I don't feel that in the comedy world as much anymore. Cause I feel like people are so individually out for themselves. That no one's really paying attention to anybody else anymore, which is fine. It's the culture. You, you try. I mean, I just feel like the new young world is.

• 34:32Speaker 07

  I just don't know them.

• 34:33Andrew Santino?

That's what I mean. Everything is flying by us.

• 34:35Speaker 07

Well, that's just age. It's not the store.

• 34:38Andrew Santino?

What is it? What, what age did you feel like the next generation was coming up?

• 34:42Speaker 07

I never really noticed because I I didn't come into my own till later. So like, that's the biggest problem is like, I didn't really put myself on the map till I was in my 40s. You know, I was around and people knew me and from Conan, there was a generation of kids that knew me. But I wasn't like a big act. I was a comic. But after the podcast and stuff, and I'm hanging out with Crow or Mulaney or even you and stuff. And because it was just all of a sudden, I was seen as a guy. Like I thought, like, we're all, we're all in this together. And then all of a sudden, like, you're 41? Well, how the fuck did that happen? Like, I just didn't see it.

• 35:16Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 35:16Speaker 07

As like, I know there's other generations, but I thought we were all peers, which we are.

• 35:20Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 35:20Speaker 07

But all of a sudden, like Mulaney's like, yeah, I'm like, whatever he is, 40. And I'm like, how the fuck did that happen?

• 35:25Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 35:25Speaker 07

Because I didn't really become part of, uh, public, like, uh, like, uh, what would you call it? It's not a star, but a name that like had some juice until I was like in my 40s.

• 35:38Andrew Santino?

You really, no, it was before you were 40. You were in your late 30s, weren't you?

• 35:42Speaker 07

  I started the podcast in, what, 2009? So 63, 73, 83, 93, 2003. No, I was 45, 46, dude.

• 35:50Andrew Santino?

  Wow.

• 35:51Speaker 07

Yeah, and I'd been at it for years, dude.

• 35:54Andrew Santino?

You started when you were what, 19?

• 35:56Speaker 07

I started in college when I was like 21 and then I didn't stick with it. And then when I got to the store in, uh, you know, I was like 23.

• 36:03Andrew Santino?

What's the first check you got?

• 36:05Speaker 07

  For comedy?

• 36:06Andrew Santino?

Yeah. I'm always interested in that because our, because our generation, like, it's so funny, like, guys now, young kids. The reason I ask is because young kids now, there's so much more, uh, there's so much more of an ability to make a living in comedy than my, at least your age probably more so, but my age, lot, most of all, my friends had day jobs. Fahim and I all had day jobs when we were working. And then you'd get off of a shitty day job because we had to pay bills and then go do spots.

• 36:28Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 36:29Andrew Santino?

But now, young kids, they can make money on the internet.

• 36:32Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 36:33Andrew Santino?

  And then go do spots.

• 36:33Speaker 07

Yeah, and now there's Venmo. I think it was when I was started, um... I think I might have made a little money for coming in second in that contest in eighty-eight in Boston. But then I started working right after that and it was like a big deal. Cause like I paid my dues early on by doing, you know, one-nighters. So it was like a two-man show, half-hour opener, forty-five close, all over the fucking New England region.

• 36:58Andrew Santino?

  With who?

• 36:59Speaker 07

  Who did I work with?

• 37:00Andrew Santino?

Yeah, who were you doing it with?

• 37:01Speaker 07

  Everybody.

• 37:02Andrew Santino?

  Guys that I know?

• 37:03Speaker 07

  Probably.

• 37:04Andrew Santino?

Are they still around, some of them?

• 37:05Speaker 07

Well, there were all the guys that were from New England and then there were guys who would come do the circuit. Cause there was like two or three bookers that did all the one-nighting booking. And you'd do like bowling alleys, any place that could contract out a night of comedy. Some were better than others, some were equipped for it, there were hotels or you do the, you know, the ballroom in the hotel or whatever. But they'd be weekly shows, you know, for as long as they could last, but they were just contracted out. But there were a couple of guys who came up from New York.

• 37:31Andrew Santino?

Who was the guy's name, the big promoter in Boston at the time?

• 37:33Speaker 07

Well, there's Lenny's brother, Mike. Mike Clark.

• 37:35Andrew Santino?

Yeah, okay, right. What was the other name that I know?

• 37:38Speaker 07

Uh, Downs, Paul Downs was the connection, I think.

• 37:42Andrew Santino?

  Who's the Boston guy that's?

• 37:43Speaker 07

Barry Katz was a Boston guy.

• 37:45Andrew Santino?

  Was he?

• 37:45Speaker 07

He booked, yeah, Boston Comedy Company, Company. I did a lot of work for Barry's company.

• 37:50Andrew Santino?

  Bloomin' Reich, Bill?

• 37:50Speaker 07

Bloomin' Reich, but that was, this was before him, yeah.

• 37:53Andrew Santino?

  It was in the nineties?

• 37:54Speaker 07

Yeah, this was in the late eighties, early nineties. It was Barry, Mike, and the Comedy Connection who I didn't work for. And Bloomin' Reich is the Comedy Connection now, I think. But he wasn't around.

• 38:05Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 38:05Speaker 07

But, uh, but Mike Clark, he had a couple. The, one of the first gigs I did was at the Derby Pack. The Derby Pack.

• 38:11Andrew Santino?

  What about the Derby Pack?

• 38:12Speaker 07

  In Lowell, Massachusetts.

• 38:13Andrew Santino?

  Lowell, Mass.

• 38:14Speaker 07

Which is like a beat-up little town where Carol I came from. I opened for a guy named Chris Sheenow. And then one of the first gigs I did was at Captain Nick's or, no, was it?

• 38:22Andrew Santino?

  Nick's Comedy Stop?

• 38:23Speaker 07

No, no, this was Captain, I think it was called Captain Nick's in Agunkwit, Maine. And I was opening for Nick DiPaolo.

• 38:29Andrew Santino?

  Oh shit.

• 38:30Speaker 07

Before he was, uh, you know, really mad. He was mad at just normal stuff. Now he's mad at bigger stuff.

• 38:36Andrew Santino?

Yeah, it gets bigger as time goes on.

• 38:38Speaker 07

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, one of his jokes was, you know, he goes into a sub place, he gets a tuna sub and the guy goes, "You want mayonnaise on that?" He goes, "No, that would make it much more tasty and delicious. I would like a dry..." Like, he was like that. It was all like, small things.

• 38:52Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 38:53Speaker 07

Uh, who were the names? Like, you know, all the Boston guys, all the McDonald's, you know, you had George McDonald, Warren McDonald, you had Mike McDonald, who wasn't related to the other two, you know, Dennis Leary was still kind of around, Don Gavin, uh...

• 39:07Andrew Santino?

What about, uh, what about, uh...

• 39:08Speaker 07

Lenny Clark, Rich Siswore, Kenny Rogers, him.

• 39:11Andrew Santino?

  Bob, uh...

• 39:12Speaker 07

  Bob, uh...

• 39:12Andrew Santino?

Bob Marley. Was he around back then?

• 39:14Speaker 07

  Bob who?

• 39:15Andrew Santino?

  Bob Marley.

• 39:15Speaker 07

No, not quite. He makes a lot of money on clean comedy on Sirius. That's where he makes all his money.

• 39:20Andrew Santino?

Bob, but he's like an east coast...

• 39:21Speaker 07

He's a regional guy, but he makes all his money because Sirius always needs clean comedy. And I think he's got, like, he makes, like, a lot of money off of sound exchange.

• 39:30Andrew Santino?

  Just radio play?

• 39:31Speaker 07

Just from Sirius play, from clean.

• 39:33Andrew Santino?

Crazy when you think about that.

• 39:34Speaker 07

That's also what saved Tom Rose's ass. Like, 'cause Jack, the guy who was at Comedy Central Records and at Sirius, you know, 'cause Tom was, you know, he, Jack said to him, he said, "Just make me a clean record, just for Sirius." Because they, they have plenty of dirty shit.

• 39:50Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 39:50Speaker 07

But the clean channels, that's where guys, you know, they need it. So Tom made a clean record and he makes, like, good money off of it.

• 39:56Andrew Santino?

God, that's wild to think about.

• 39:57Speaker 07

  Isn't that great?

• 39:58Andrew Santino?

Well, I mean, that was, some of that formula is brilliant to think as time has gone on, how much more, uh, clean comedy is coming back into the fold.

• 40:06Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 40:07Andrew Santino?

Because the Bargatze's of the world, like, I mean, look, Gaffigan...

• 40:11Speaker 07

  Sure.

• 40:12Andrew Santino?

  And, and there's a couple...

• 40:13Speaker 07

  Regan?

• 40:13Andrew Santino?

Regan, there's a couple of guys that are traditionally clean.

• 40:15Speaker 07

  Seinfeld.

• 40:16Andrew Santino?

But Nate figured out too, that, that, that was kind of always his, he was never like a dirty guy.

• 40:20Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah.

• 40:21Andrew Santino?

  He was never filthy.

• 40:21Speaker 07

  No, no, no.

• 40:22Andrew Santino?

So was a smart writer, and so he just knew, "Oh, well, then I, why do I need to go down this other path?"

• 40:26Speaker 07

Well, there was always an issue, dude. I mean, when I was coming up, because my heroes were filthy, you know...

• 40:31Andrew Santino?

  Same.

• 40:31Speaker 07

It was always like, you know, "Don't, don't go blue."

• 40:34Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, "Don't go blue."

• 40:35Speaker 07

It was like, you know, but I, they were saying that to me all the time.

• 40:38Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 40:38Speaker 07

  I'm like, "Fuck you."

• 40:39Andrew Santino?

Fuck you, dude. I'm gonna say whatever I want. That clip is my favorite clip of Eddie Murphy talking about when Rodney being like, "Oh, no." It's so good.

• 40:48Speaker 07

  It's the best.

• 40:48Andrew Santino?

But here was the funny thing. A guy like Rodney... You knew, had all that dirty mouth talk in him, he just never did it up there.

• 40:56Speaker 07

No, because he was old school. Yeah, he was buddies with Joe Ansis, who was Lenny Bruce's pal. They were selling aluminum siding. That's a good story, that whole Rodney story.

• 41:06Andrew Santino?

Yeah, it's incredible. You never worked with Sinatra, ever, did you?

• 41:09Speaker 07

  No, I'm not that old.

• 41:10Andrew Santino?

What do you mean, "not that old"?

• 41:11Speaker 07

  Sinatra?

• 41:12Andrew Santino?

Yeah, dude, he was still touring-

• 41:13Speaker 07

Oh, Rodney, I thought you said you never worked with Sinatra.

• 41:15Andrew Santino?

  No, no.

• 41:16Speaker 07

No, Rodney was interesting, because I remember, like, he was, like, he did, oddly, until a few years ago, and probably until, you know, Norm and, and other people, like, he actually did not get the respect he deserved.

• 41:30Andrew Santino?

  Fuck you!

• 41:31Speaker 07

  I'm serious.

• 41:32Andrew Santino?

  I felt, I know, I know.

• 41:36Speaker 07

He did it, you're right. Like, he was one of the best.

• 41:38Andrew Santino?

He was one of the greatest, yeah.

• 41:39Speaker 07

And he just was not, I remember being in Aspen at the Comedy's Festival, and they did a roast of him, and they had nobody up there. Like, nobody came in, it was like Paul Rodriguez and, you know, some other, but it was like, like, how is this guy, because he was a depressive, solitary guy.

• 41:54Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 41:54Speaker 07

He didn't have a lot of friends, like, Richard Lewis loved him, and there's a great, there, I, you know, Carl LeBeau told me a story about Kennison and Rodney that was, that was hilarious. Because Kennison, you know, loved him.

• 42:06Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 42:06Speaker 07

Because he, well, he had Rodney, the young comedians, right?

• 42:10Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 42:11Speaker 07

But apparently, it was like, um, Kennison, Kennison was on some sort of bender, and you know, Kennison was Kennison. And he'd been up in his Malibu house for days, you know, probably, you know, fucking yelling about a woman or something, and there's just blow everywhere, and there's empty bottles everywhere, the place is, looks like a three-day bender looks.

• 42:27Andrew Santino?

  Mm-hmm.

• 42:27Speaker 07

And no, no one knew what to do with Sam, because he was like in a fucking spiral. So they're like, "Let's call Rodney." So they call Rodney, and apparently Rodney comes over, walks in and looks at Sam and goes, "Look at little Nero."

• 42:42Andrew Santino?

But he respected him so much, I bet he, it kicks him into full gear when he sees a guy like that.

• 42:45Speaker 07

  That's right.

• 42:46Andrew Santino?

  That's all you can do.

• 42:47Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 42:47Andrew Santino?

Because your peers, like, you go say something, he's like, "Fuck you."

• 42:49Speaker 07

  Yeah, right, right.

• 42:50Andrew Santino?

Well, especially because you were working for him, right, or with him, whatever you want to call it.

• 42:54Speaker 07

  Who?

• 42:55Andrew Santino?

  With Kennison.

• 42:56Speaker 07

Oh, well, I was just at the store.

• 42:57Andrew Santino?

But you know what I mean, like, but a door guy, he's not, he's gonna be like, "Get fucked."

• 43:00Speaker 07

He couldn't listen to anybody, yeah. But, uh, yeah, that was a, that was kind of a funny story. So the vegan thing.

• 43:06Andrew Santino?

Kick me back, yeah. How do I get into it? It's not that I want to, I'm just interested in trying stuff. I tried, I was vegged for a couple of months just to try shit. Like, I know as time has gone on, I just, I'm like, I wanna just try different shit.

• 43:19Speaker 07

For me, like, I never, like, I, my mother was anorexic and I always had a profound fear of, of most things.

• 43:25Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

• 43:26Speaker 07

Like, cheese to me just looks like fat. It looks like a little cut, in different colors, different consistency. It just looks like fat.

• 43:33Andrew Santino?

But she put that in your head all the time.

• 43:34Speaker 07

I guess, but it is kinda fat, cheese.

• 43:35Andrew Santino?

  It literally is, yeah.

• 43:36Speaker 07

Yeah, and, uh, but I mean, I eat pizza and every, I used to eat pizza and a lot of meat and everything. For me, it was really just because, you know, I got in the colonoscopy.

• 43:45Andrew Santino?

  Oh, shit.

• 43:46Speaker 07

And, uh, it was fine. But the, the thing was, is like, my cholesterol's slightly borderline, like, it's not high, but it's like in that zone. And after I got the colonoscopy, I'm like, alright, clean slate, let's just like not, let's just do it. You, you know, start over, there's nothing in you. Just do the vegan thing, see if you can get the numbers down, see if it makes a difference on the blood work.

• 44:07Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

• 44:08Speaker 07

And it does, you know, it, it did. It wasn't like, I was on a little bit of statin at the time, like 10, yeah. But I was only on 10 a day, 10 milligrams.

• 44:17Andrew Santino?

  Me too.

• 44:17Speaker 07

And when I went vegan, after two weeks, I got another blood test on the statin, and the LDL went from like 125 to like 80.

• 44:24Andrew Santino?

  Wow.

• 44:24Speaker 07

So then I'm like, I'm gonna do it without the statin. And then I, it actually got my blood work to a point where I didn't need statins anymore. It's right on the edge, but the ratio was good. And I like, I like, uh, I really feel like I ate enough meat. And you get to a certain point, I'm, I was eating though, cause I had the fucking Traeger that they'd given me for nothing.

• 44:41Andrew Santino?

  So good.

• 44:42Speaker 07

Yeah, and I was doing those fucking bone-in ribeyes, whole chickens.

• 44:45Andrew Santino?

  Oh, they're so good.

• 44:46Speaker 07

Yeah, I love it. Yeah, but there, there is a moment where you're looking at a bone-in ribeye and you're like, that's fucking nasty, dude.

• 44:53Andrew Santino?

It's gonna, it's gonna kill me.

• 44:54Speaker 07

Well, no, it's just like, it's a, a chunk of a fucking animal.

• 44:57Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, give me your leg.

• 44:59Speaker 07

Yeah, right. And you can't separate it. And it, and it, it's not an ethical thing for me altogether, but it has become more so. But the idea of cooking to be vegan and, you know, managing the eating disorder like that, I was kinda into it. And I don't miss meat. You know, you do wonder if you're getting everything you need, but you can pick it up on the other.

• 45:16Andrew Santino?

You feel it with other stuff. Yeah, there's so, well, there's so many supplements now.

• 45:19Speaker 07

You can't get B12 with the, with the vegan.

• 45:21Andrew Santino?

  Take a pill.

• 45:22Speaker 07

Yeah, you take a supplement and the omegas, but I don't know, I'm kinda into it and I like cooking for it and I like Indian food. Go on the road and most places have at least vegan junk food, which I don't like, but it's gotten me into going to Ethiopian places.

• 45:34Andrew Santino?

  Oh shit.

• 45:35Speaker 07

And like I, and I didn't really love Ethiopian food, but now if I'm on the road, Ethiopian, Indian or Middle Eastern, it's fucking great.

• 45:42Andrew Santino?

See, Indian's one of my favorite. We have Indian all, I love Indian food.

• 45:45Speaker 07

  Where do you go?

• 45:45Andrew Santino?

So good. I'm not gonna say it on here to these people. They're gonna hear it and know and then they're gonna come see me there.

• 45:50Speaker 07

Does the place need business though?

• 45:51Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, they do.

• 45:52Speaker 07

Like I go to the one on, in Glendale.

• 45:55Andrew Santino?

  Oh, uh, uh.

• 45:56Speaker 07

East India Cafe is what it's called.

• 45:57Andrew Santino?

Yeah, I've had that. That's fantastic.

• 45:59Speaker 07

And they do, it's almost like all vegan now. She's like so into it. No, it's not all vegan, but they don't, they'll make the breads. You know, some of the breads are usually never vegan. You can only get roti, but she does paratha, she'll do naan and she, they use another different milk.

• 46:13Andrew Santino?

  Vegan naan?

• 46:14Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 46:14Andrew Santino?

  Take me there.

• 46:15Speaker 07

  It's great, man.

• 46:16Andrew Santino?

  I wanna taste it.

• 46:17Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 46:17Andrew Santino?

Cause I do lo-, I mean honestly, like the more, the, here's my thing about it, right?

• 46:21Speaker 07

Do you do a, do you do the, uh, here's my, my real test of like whether people really like Indian food.

• 46:26Andrew Santino?

  Hmm.

• 46:26Speaker 07

Do you do the, uh, achar? You know, the pickle? Duh, so you're pussy.

• 46:31Andrew Santino?

  You like that shit?

• 46:32Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 46:33Andrew Santino?

  I don't like it.

• 46:33Speaker 07

Dude, it's heavy, man. I remember the first time I tried it.

• 46:36Andrew Santino?

  I don't like it, dude.

• 46:36Speaker 07

Way back, someone turned me on to Indian pickle and the first time I put it in my mouth, I was like, what the fuck is that?

• 46:41Andrew Santino?

No, it's good stuff, my shit.

• 46:43Speaker 07

But, but then once you develop the taste for it, you're like, oh yeah.

• 46:46Andrew Santino?

  So now you crave it?

• 46:47Speaker 07

Oh, I'll do it, yeah. I had it at home, dude.

• 46:49Andrew Santino?

  Really?

• 46:50Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 46:50Andrew Santino?

I don't love it. That's not my favorite.

• 46:52Speaker 07

Pickled limes and the weird mangoes. It's so intense and fucked up, but I'll always get it.

• 46:56Andrew Santino?

See, no, I can't, I can't do it cause I think it's not my flavor profile. I just, I'm obsessed with.

• 47:01Speaker 07

But is it anybody's? Like what is that flavor profile?

• 47:03Andrew Santino?

I mean, it's, uh, it tastes like, uh.

• 47:05Speaker 07

It's like, like you know you're eating something.

• 47:08Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, it's very.

• 47:09Speaker 07

  It's salty and weird and.

• 47:12Andrew Santino?

It's like burnt salt, burnt, burnt.

• 47:14Speaker 07

But there are whole limes in there that are pickled.

• 47:16Andrew Santino?

  I don't like that, dude.

• 47:17Speaker 07

  Oh, dude.

• 47:17Andrew Santino?

I think you're liking it just for the props to be like, I'll eat that shit. And then people at the restaurant are like, holy shit, this white guy's not bad.

• 47:24Speaker 07

  Yeah, totally.

• 47:25Andrew Santino?

  You do like that, yeah.

• 47:26Speaker 07

But I do like it, though.

• 47:27Andrew Santino?

Yeah, no, I can't do it.

• 47:28Speaker 07

Do you ever go to Bod Mosh?

• 47:29Andrew Santino?

  No, where's that?

• 47:29Speaker 07

  That's another good one, dude.

• 47:31Andrew Santino?

  Was it Glendale?

• 47:31Speaker 07

No, it's right across from Cantor's. And they're like, they're the kids of a guy that owned an Indian restaurant and they've kind of like heightened it a little bit.

• 47:39Andrew Santino?

  New age, a little bit?

• 47:40Speaker 07

Well, it's just like hot rodded it a little bit, made it hipper, but it's real good, man.

• 47:45Andrew Santino?

By the way, speaking of which, whatever happened to fucking Jewish delis in LA?

• 47:48Speaker 07

Well, you get, they all died to people.

• 47:49Andrew Santino?

  Isn't that crazy?

• 47:50Speaker 07

It's just people die. For deli to be good, it has to have turnover. And nobody, like, there's a whole generations of Jews don't even think about it. I think I'm probably the last generation that grew up with at least grandparents who were deli people.

• 48:03Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 48:03Speaker 07

And then my parents, like, they could take it or leave it. And so my generation is kind of.

• 48:08Andrew Santino?

You don't give a shit either, huh?

• 48:09Speaker 07

  No, I do.

• 48:09Andrew Santino?

  Oh, you still do.

• 48:10Speaker 07

Like, I'll go now, I go to Cantor's, I go up to sitting in Cantor's. I worked at a Jewish deli in Boston, uh, one year when I was doing comedy on my own, the first year after college. It was crazy, dude.

• 48:21Andrew Santino?

  I love it.

• 48:21Speaker 07

It was in Boston, they had different, like, a different approach to the real Jewish deli. They have four kinds of rye bread, four kinds.

• 48:28Andrew Santino?

I didn't even know there is, I thought there was just one.

• 48:30Speaker 07

Well, there's dark, right, there's light, and there's, you know, dark with seeds, or there's pumpernickel. So there's actually four, but you didn't have a word for them. You know, it was just sort of like a pumpernickel bread, but like in Boston, you had sisal rye, you had light rye, you had dark rye, and then you had pumpernickel, there's four different fucking kinds. And sisal's just seeded rye, but it was, I, I, I kind of fucking loved that job because it was really a parade, like, of, of a type of old Jew that, like, wasn't normal like New York.

• 49:02Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 49:02Speaker 07

Because it was like a lot of working class Jews that were old guys. And a lot of times you don't conceive that, you know, there were Jewish policemen or Jewish, you know, like, and plumbers and, you know, like, but of course there were.

• 49:14Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 49:14Speaker 07

But like in your mind, they're, they're always like, you know, doctors or old retired rich people. But these were all working class, old Jewish cops and stuff, and it was great.

• 49:23Andrew Santino?

What was your favorite in LA?

• 49:26Speaker 07

  Well, I

• 49:27Andrew Santino?

  Has there always been Cantor's?

• 49:29Speaker 07

Well, Cantor's goes in and out. Like, there was a period there where it wasn't good. I was never a Langer's guy, because it's filthy.

• 49:35Andrew Santino?

Everybody loved Langer's. That was like the spot for everybody.

• 49:38Speaker 07

  Just for pastrami.

• 49:39Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, it is really good.

• 49:40Speaker 07

I really like Jewish brisket, but it's hard to find it where it's not dry.

• 49:45Andrew Santino?

There used to be a place called Junior's on the west side.

• 49:46Speaker 07

I know Junior's over in, uh, on Pico or in Santa Monica.

• 49:49Andrew Santino?

  It's far gone now.

• 49:50Speaker 07

  That was great.

• 49:51Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, they're something else now.

• 49:52Speaker 07

Uh, and, uh, there was, uh, Nate and Al's was okay.

• 49:56Andrew Santino?

  It's still humming along.

• 49:57Speaker 07

Yeah, but, but Cantor's now does a vegan Reuben, dude.

• 50:00Andrew Santino?

  What?

• 50:00Speaker 07

  It's crazy. And it's crazy.

• 50:03Andrew Santino?

  It's good, though?

• 50:04Speaker 07

There's one company that makes, um, vegan, like, uh, uh, pastrami.

• 50:08Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 50:08Speaker 07

And it's, I don't know if it's wheat-based or soy-based, but they, it, all it is, it's the texture, but it's all the spices, so it's, it's good enough.

• 50:16Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

• 50:16Speaker 07

And they'll, they'll make the Reuben. If you want it vegan, you can get the, the, it's Goldfarb's Vegan Pastrami. You can get that. They'll put the sauerkraut on, and if you don't want cheese, they'll put avocado, and they got a vegan Russian dressing, and they'll grill it. That's the whole thing.

• 50:31Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, that's smash, yeah.

• 50:32Speaker 07

I'll go, I'll fucking go do that.

• 50:34Andrew Santino?

That's, that, and it's got the texture, though, because that's hard to emulate.

• 50:37Speaker 07

  It's great.

• 50:38Andrew Santino?

That's the thing, if they can get that right.

• 50:40Speaker 07

I think, I think, uh, Cantor's is okay now. I think Langer's is probably better pastrami, but I like the whole vibe of Cantor's.

• 50:47Andrew Santino?

You never went to Green Blast, did you?

• 50:48Speaker 07

Yeah, a couple of times back when I was, when I was a doorman, but it was never, never felt like a, a real deli to me.

• 50:55Andrew Santino?

Yeah, it felt kind of like a wine.

• 50:56Speaker 07

It was like hot food thing.

• 50:57Andrew Santino?

It was like a wine shop with hot food to go.

• 50:59Speaker 07

The hot food to go thing. It didn't really do it for me.

• 51:01Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, that's not my thing.

• 51:02Speaker 07

Yeah, I, I, I'm definitely a, an old deli guy.

• 51:06Andrew Santino?

What's your, what's your, like, you, what's your bad boy meal when you're gonna not be?

• 51:10Speaker 07

Well, that Reuben's pretty bad. I miss eating the fucking sweets. I used to like that chocolate, I love chocolate bapka, that Russian coffee cake. You know, that's layered, like, they have that over there at Cantor's.

• 51:20Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, that's, that's fatty shit.

• 51:21Speaker 07

I still plow through a, a pint of ice cream. I like that. And sometimes, like, sometimes vegan chocolate cakes are better than non-vegan chocolate cakes. There's some places that can make a chocolate cake.

• 51:31Andrew Santino?

Moist enough where it tricks you?

• 51:32Speaker 07

  Totally, dude.

• 51:32Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 51:33Speaker 07

Totally. They just load it up with oil.

• 51:35Andrew Santino?

See, you don't seem like a rip through a pint of ice cream on a night alone guy.

• 51:38Speaker 07

I used to do a whole fucking bit about that, about... Oh yeah, dude, totally. Cause I got off drugs. What else are you gonna do, man?

• 51:45Andrew Santino?

Yeah, sugar is the replacement, isn't it?

• 51:46Speaker 07

Well, I, uh, what was that bit I do? Like, uh, everyone's got demons and I used to do this. It used to be that one that would come out and go, "Woo, let's go get an eight ball, some booze and some pussy." And now, and now that guy's sort of like, "I'll have some ice cream." And a porno, that'd be good.

• 52:05Speaker 02

You want some rocky road, dude, and some soft porn?

• 52:08Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 55:11Andrew Santino?

You don't have any, there's no devilish bullshit thoughts entering your mind?

• 55:15Speaker 07

Well, no, you know, like, well, you know, vaginas, but yeah, that's just-

• 55:21Andrew Santino?

  That's human nature.

• 55:22Speaker 07

That's just human nature. And, no, there's not that many bad, there's not any real bad things. The zins are pretty compulsive.

• 55:28Andrew Santino?

  That's probably the best word.

• 55:29Speaker 07

But like, anything I do, even with these, I think I talked to you about that, it's like, you know you're an addict, because like, you know, there's, if you're an addict, like, I'm finding used zins under my pillow, stuck to my face when I wake up. They're just all over the place. They're in my yard, and my, it's the equivalent of like, empty bottles everywhere. You just don't realize how many you're doing until you start finding old ones everywhere.

• 55:52Andrew Santino?

Holy shit, they're in my shoes?

• 55:53Speaker 07

Yeah, or you save them. That's, that's my fucked up addict thinking. Like, if I'm chewing nicotine gum or a zen, I'm like, there's still some stuff in here, but I wanna eat something. I'll fucking save it.

• 56:03Andrew Santino?

So it's not even cheap, it's sad.

• 56:05Speaker 07

  It's sad.

• 56:06Andrew Santino?

Cause you could just pick up a new one, it doesn't matter.

• 56:08Speaker 07

Of course, of course, but it's like, no, this, the stuff's in here and I gotta.

• 56:11Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, I might as well.

• 56:12Speaker 07

  Yeah, keep it.

• 56:13Andrew Santino?

Try for a little bit later.

• 56:14Speaker 07

  Keep this stuff.

• 56:14Andrew Santino?

Now that's, but that's, that's very, uh, that's very, uh.

• 56:18Speaker 07

  It's attic-y.

• 56:19Andrew Santino?

Attic, baby boomer attic-y though, too.

• 56:21Speaker 07

  I guess so, yeah.

• 56:21Andrew Santino?

  You're not a boomer, you're not.

• 56:23Speaker 07

  I'm one year boomer.

• 56:24Andrew Santino?

But it's sa- are you, no, you're not.

• 56:26Speaker 07

One year, I'm the last year of boomers.

• 56:28Andrew Santino?

  Are you?

• 56:28Speaker 07

But I was, I was brought up pretty Gen X, but I'm the last year of boomers.

• 56:32Andrew Santino?

Yeah, you're the king Gen X guy. You were the, you were the generation that, uh, bullied everything that my generation listened to. Cause everything, our music was, you're the generation that goes, we had the last great generation of music making.

• 56:43Speaker 07

Kinda, but I was already at the crashing wave. When I was in high school, the music that was coming out was pretty good, but we were still, it was all Zeppelin. And by the time I was in high school, they had done all the major ones. When I was in high school, In Through the Outdoor came out. And maybe Presence. But everything that we knew was still from, you know, the early seventies, late sixties, really. The music that came out when I was in high school, like, there was a lot of Foreigner going on, Hot Blooded. But when I was in high school, Van, Van Halen One came out. And that was kind of a game changer.

• 57:16Andrew Santino?

  That's huge.

• 57:17Speaker 07

That was huge, dude. Cause you know, in Albuquerque, everyone could drive when they were 15, you got your license.

• 57:22Andrew Santino?

  What?

• 57:22Speaker 07

So that, yeah, you have 14, nine months learner's permit, 15 driver's license.

• 57:25Andrew Santino?

  Holy shit.

• 57:26Speaker 07

So they had the senior parking lot, and then the, the other, the rest of us could park over by the Wendy's. But I just remember, after Van Halen One though, just the open doors of the Camaros and shit with their Jenson triaxles just blaring eruption. It was like, the entire planet had shifted, you know?

• 57:42Andrew Santino?

  That is cool.

• 57:42Speaker 07

  It was great.

• 57:43Andrew Santino?

I'm trying to think of what that was for my generation, like, what was the albums that came out? Nirvana was probably the biggest for my, my childhood of that.

• 57:50Speaker 07

  Pearl Jam.

• 57:52Andrew Santino?

Pearl Jam, but, but Nirvana, I think was so revolutionary. It was like, finally, people, kids were like, whoa!

• 57:57Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 57:58Andrew Santino?

This is like what we fucking do and feel. This is.

• 58:00Speaker 07

Was that like 92? I was still into that shit. I wasn't being condescending to any new music. But there was a thing when I was in high school, I was there for the shift. Cause there was, there was always the classic rock and whatever was happening, but early on disco was still almost kind of alive.

• 58:17Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 58:18Speaker 07

And the shift like when I saw disco leave, because it was interesting, cause I grew up in Albuquerque, he's like 70% Latino. And you know, it went from, you know, like platform shoes and bell bottoms to cholo like overnight. You know, it was just like the platform shoes were gone, everyone bandanas, chinos, you know, I'm like, wow.

• 58:37Andrew Santino?

  Button up shirts?

• 58:38Speaker 07

  Exactly.

• 58:38Andrew Santino?

I would have loved to see you in a cholo wear. You never, you never dapper.

• 58:41Speaker 07

No, no, no, no, no. What am I, I can't do that. You know, you gotta respect.

• 58:44Andrew Santino?

You could have pulled it off. You had long hair though. The pictures of you when you were young are wild.

• 58:48Speaker 07

But I remember when new wave happened. Like punk took a while to kind of get out to the burbs. But new wave, like when the NAC album came out, everybody running around with those skinny ties and the buttons.

• 58:58Andrew Santino?

  Skinny ties.

• 58:59Speaker 07

I saw that happen and it was like, all right, I guess the cars, the cars happened.

• 59:04Andrew Santino?

  Cars are rad.

• 59:05Speaker 07

  Great.

• 59:06Andrew Santino?

You never liked hair, like hair metal. You never liked that shit.

• 59:08Speaker 07

I wanted, I like it now.

• 59:10Andrew Santino?

You just didn't, when you were young, you're like, fuck this.

• 59:11Speaker 07

I like the heavier metal. Uh, but no, I was never like, um, uh, like Def Leppard was okay early on, but I was never.

• 59:20Andrew Santino?

  Do you like Whitesnake?

• 59:21Speaker 07

  No.

• 59:21Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 59:22Speaker 07

No, but the nuge was around, but that's not hair metal. That's the nuge.

• 59:26Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 59:26Speaker 07

I ended up seeing the nuge more times than I needed to, cause my buddies like the nuge.

• 59:30Andrew Santino?

And you were like, we gotta go.

• 59:32Speaker 07

I'm like, I'll go see the nuge.

• 59:33Andrew Santino?

I'll get high and go watch with you.

• 59:34Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 59:35Andrew Santino?

Did bands come through Albuquerque a lot? They did?

• 59:37Speaker 07

  Sure.

• 59:38Andrew Santino?

  Do you play Albuquerque now?

• 59:39Speaker 07

Oh, that was the other band. I talked to a sickler about that. What?

• 59:41Andrew Santino?

  Do you play Albuquerque?

• 59:42Speaker 07

  It's hard market.

• 59:43Andrew Santino?

  I've never played it.

• 59:44Speaker 07

That's because there's, there's really no small theater. Like the chemo kind of is good, but it's kind of hard to get. You gotta go through the state. And the only thing they got is a convention center. I think that's like 3,000. Maybe you could sell it. I can't.

• 59:55Andrew Santino?

Well, why do they, I don't see what.

• 59:56Speaker 07

It's just not, that's cause there's no, there's no in between. There's one in Santa Fe, the Lenzik. That's a pretty good sized theater for like 800, 1200, I think.

• 1:00:05Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

• 1:00:05Speaker 07

But it, it goes from nothing to the convention center.

• 1:00:08Andrew Santino?

Do you think they do that on purpose deliberately to like, they're like, we like to keep it like this?

• 1:00:11Speaker 07

It's just a weird market. They just opened a, I guess they opened a Hyenas there.

• 1:00:15Andrew Santino?

  Did they?

• 1:00:15Speaker 07

  Yep.

• 1:00:17Andrew Santino?

I just don't get it. I feel like every time people are like.

• 1:00:19Speaker 07

  It's weird market.

• 1:00:20Andrew Santino?

Albuquerque has this namesake to it where people are like, no one plays there.

• 1:00:23Speaker 07

No, I know. It's, but bands definitely came. Like I, I saw, like I saw Van Halen kinda, I passed out, but I saw that first tour.

• 1:00:32Andrew Santino?

  Too fucked up.

• 1:00:32Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, too fucked up.

• 1:00:33Andrew Santino?

Was that your, what was your first show?

• 1:00:35Speaker 07

Well, I went with my parents, I think. The first show I saw was with my parents. We went to see Frampton.

• 1:00:41Andrew Santino?

  What?

• 1:00:41Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:00:42Andrew Santino?

  That's so cool.

• 1:00:43Speaker 07

It was so funny because I was, uh, this must've been junior high, but I was growing the, like, I wanted to try to grow pot. But I did, I wasn't really smoking it, but I was seeing a lot of the culture, but I was kind of afraid to do drugs at that time. But I grew this like massive pot plant and my parents were pretty groovy. So I was just growing this pot plant. I didn't know what to do with it. And I didn't even know what to, you know, dry it or anything else. But I remember we were at the Frampton concert and it was me and my parents. Probably my brother and my dad's like, so you got any of that pot you're growing? And, you know, and I, and I did, I tried to roll a joint with it and I'm like, yeah. And I remember we lit it up and my mom kept going, Barry, don't, Barry.

• 1:01:25Andrew Santino?

Cut it out, Barry. Don't influence the boy. Totally different experience with drugs with my family. My God. It was, you know, the irony is I got busted smoking pot so much when I was a kid because I was a huge pothead.

• 1:01:36Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:01:37Andrew Santino?

And then years later, after like the devil has been taken away from it now. My mom, her sister got cancer and then it was like, she used it for, you know, to like eat and for supplementation for what a lot of people do.

• 1:01:51Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:01:51Andrew Santino?

And my mom's entire world changed about it. She was like, you know, this is actually very like helpful shit. I'm like, yeah, what the fuck?

• 1:01:59Speaker 07

  I knew that.

• 1:02:00Andrew Santino?

I was telling you that years ago, this is good for people. It feels great. You could get sleep. You can eat food. It is funny how, and my dad's, my dad's still pretty stern, old school, you know, 50s guy, you know? A 50s kid. Anyone born in the 50s was like, drugs, drugs.

• 1:02:15Speaker 07

  Yeah, bad.

• 1:02:16Andrew Santino?

Drug bad. And then, but now he's seen how much more culture changed around it that it was like, people who are responsible can use this thing like a, like a drink or whatever.

• 1:02:26Speaker 07

  Sure.

• 1:02:27Andrew Santino?

And now like my sister and I will get stoned and he won't care anymore at the house. And he used to be like so freaked out about it.

• 1:02:34Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:02:35Andrew Santino?

Like the cops are gonna come and they'll, they'll get ya. It's like, no one's gonna come.

• 1:02:38Speaker 07

My parents are a different generation because my mom had me when she was 22. So that, she was 22 in 1963. So when 69, 70. I mean, she's like twenty eight years old. She's a kid, yeah. Yeah, my dad's like thirty two. So they were kind of in that like swingery zone, trying to be groovy. Because they were young enough, they weren't fifty's parents. Right. And they were kind of floating, you know, in that change. Your parents weren't swingers, though? I don't know. Whoa. Somebody was, I know my dad was out doing his business. Right. I don't know if it was on the level. I don't know if there was an agreement in place, but I think they were both kinda, you know, I know my dad was. You do? Oh, yeah, yeah. Did your mom, did you ever talk about it with your mom? Well.

• 1:03:19Speaker 07

It took a long time, like, it was funny, because my dad, you know, he's got dementia now, and I'm doing a bit in the special on this, but he he's with a woman, who's fifteen years younger than him, but this woman was his first secretary. When we moved to Albuquerque. In like seventy two or whatever. Yeah. And she used to cover for him when he was out doing that. Oh, shit. And now she's got him, now she's like, you know, good for you. And, you know, I, I just, I hope you just keep him until he goes, because I don't, I don't want to do it. But, yeah, he was a, he was kind of a swinging dick. And I, I think my mom, I don't know, but she eventually got wind of it, and they got divorced when I was in my thirties. I think, yeah. The dementia thing is tough.

• 1:04:00Speaker 07

It's, yeah, it's, it's a little, it's weird, because, you know, he was always kind of a manic bipolar, like lunatic, you know, like a lot of, you know, back up and down. And one thing I tell you about dementia, it does cure the bipolar.

• 1:04:16Speaker 07

He's pretty level now. Yeah, he's even keel now. Pretty even keel, kinda sweet. Ninety? No, eighty six. And, you know, he's still got a lot of his memories, he knows me, but, you know, a lot of the stuff is just kinda not there anymore. But, you know, I, I see him, and the last few times I saw him last week. He's still, like, he, when I'm around, you know, the problem is, like, you don't have any friends. And I think you really need to have people you have regular conversations with, as opposed to just your wife who's like had it. You know, like. Sick of your shit. Well, just sort of like, you know, she's, you know, he's still at home, and she's, you know, stepping up and, and, and taking care of him. Yeah. But, you know, eventually, it's sort of like, just walk. So it's that tone. You know, it's not like discussion about movies or politics going on, it's like.

• 1:05:00Andrew Santino?

  Get up and go.

• 1:05:01Speaker 07

You know how to put your shoes on.

• 1:05:02Andrew Santino?

  Hurry up.

• 1:05:03Speaker 07

Yeah, right, exactly. But it is helpful, because you want to keep them active. But that's the tone.

• 1:05:09Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, it's changed.

• 1:05:10Speaker 07

And but when I get there.

• 1:05:11Andrew Santino?

  No friends, though.

• 1:05:12Speaker 07

No friends, so he doesn't talk to anybody. So when I go, he kind of locks in. And, you know, he's, it was funny, he was, he's been pretty engaged in, you know, asking questions and remembering things from one, you know, like, because I showed him the documentary that Steve Finearts made about me. And it's all about Lynn dying and everything. And, you know, he's in it, you know, and she's in it for a second. And I showed it, and he processed it. He couldn't hear it that well. But for three days after, he's like, oh, it's a shame what happened to you. Terrible, miserable thing happened to you. No luck, you know, that kind of thing. I know, I know. The next day, it's like, that's really too bad that that's, I'm like, I know.

• 1:05:48Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, man, I know.

• 1:05:49Speaker 07

But he was remembering, so it was good.

• 1:05:51Andrew Santino?

Yeah, that's about the positive. He's like, I, I, I, I remembered last night that tragedy about your entire life.

• 1:05:57Speaker 07

  Exactly, exactly, yeah, good, good.

• 1:05:59Andrew Santino?

That's great. That's my, my biggest fear is that if anyone in my family starts to lose memory, the only fear I have is that they won't remember my name.

• 1:06:08Speaker 07

Well, I used, I used to do a.

• 1:06:09Andrew Santino?

That fucks me up, like, won't remember who I am.

• 1:06:11Speaker 07

I did a bit about that. I, I, I, when I started talking about the dementia on the last special, it was, the bit was like, uh, I know it's a terrible disease, and I know eventually that my dad's not, not going to know who, who, who I am. And on that day, I will be truly free.

• 1:06:33Speaker 07

I'll be like, hey, Dad, who are you? Yes.

• 1:06:37Andrew Santino?

  See you later.

• 1:06:40Andrew Santino?

Uh, Mark, I love you. I appreciate you coming by the show. You know, I could talk to you for nine hours, but I want to let you go. You're a busy man, and you're a sweet prince for coming by. I know it's hard to get out of your routine to come say hi to me, but it means the world. No, it means the world.

• 1:06:52Speaker 07

We went on one hike. We can go again.

• 1:06:54Andrew Santino?

  We could go again.

• 1:06:55Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:06:55Andrew Santino?

  I'll come over there.

• 1:06:56Speaker 07

Do you hike it? Do you hike it?

• 1:06:56Andrew Santino?

I hike, I hike, I hike, I hike, I hike. You know what the sad thing is? I used to hike with my dog, but now. Uh, she just can't do it. Yeah. She's not even that old, but she just doesn't want to do it.

• 1:07:08Speaker 07

It's a hard hike, that one. You're one of the few people that can do it.

• 1:07:11Andrew Santino?

We, when we did it, we fucked that thing up.

• 1:07:13Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:07:13Andrew Santino?

I actually liked how hard it was.

• 1:07:15Speaker 07

  Yeah, it's good.

• 1:07:16Andrew Santino?

  That's really tough.

• 1:07:17Speaker 07

  It's a tough one.

• 1:07:17Andrew Santino?

And I've taken people there, you know?

• 1:07:19Speaker 07

  Yeah, and they can't.

• 1:07:20Andrew Santino?

Well, I just like it that people are like-

• 1:07:21Speaker 07

You get halfway up and they're like-

• 1:07:22Andrew Santino?

Hold on, hold on, hold on. I'm like, oh yeah, hell yeah. It feels really good. But when I saw you fucking it, like, Mark was also leading the way when we went and he was cruising, man.

• 1:07:31Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:07:31Andrew Santino?

You were cru- and he was showing off a little bit.

• 1:07:33Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:07:33Andrew Santino?

Cause he had done it before.

• 1:07:34Speaker 07

I was doing it like twice a week that day.

• 1:07:36Andrew Santino?

Not, not anymore? What are you doing now?

• 1:07:38Speaker 07

  Well, I-

• 1:07:39Andrew Santino?

  It's too hot now, though.

• 1:07:39Speaker 07

It's hot and also like, I got a guy go with Dan and, but it just gets to be a lot on your body to do that. Cause I, we, we run down. I think we might've done that too.

• 1:07:52Andrew Santino?

  We did.

• 1:07:53Speaker 07

Cause I can't, that whole side stepping down, just do it.

• 1:07:55Andrew Santino?

Nah, just, just go as hard as you can.

• 1:07:57Speaker 07

I also realized like, you know, if I go down, I'm gonna break something.

• 1:08:00Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, that's, yeah.

• 1:08:02Speaker 07

You know, I broke my foot not doing that, but like, you don't want to be, you get to a certain age where if you get fucking, you know, injured.

• 1:08:10Andrew Santino?

  It's real.

• 1:08:11Speaker 07

  Well, it'll fuck you.

• 1:08:12Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:12Speaker 07

And then you won't be able to exercise. You don't know if the other bounce back, the foot, it worked out.

• 1:08:16Andrew Santino?

Well, that's why I was scared about ski. I don't ski anymore and I'm really sad. I wish I could still ski. But I hurt my back so bad years ago, like I had such a bad back injury that now I'm like, I don't want to ski again because if I get injured skiing, I'll go, see?

• 1:08:28Speaker 07

Yeah, and you can't have the fear.

• 1:08:30Andrew Santino?

  Oh, I have it bad.

• 1:08:31Speaker 07

Yeah, see, that's the thing. And I, but we do the hike occasionally. Generally, I'm doing more, if I need the cardio, I'll do the treadmill, but we'll do it. You know, sometimes once a week, maybe every couple of weeks, but I'll do it.

• 1:08:41Andrew Santino?

  We'll go hike again.

• 1:08:42Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:08:43Andrew Santino?

  Uh-

• 1:08:43Speaker 07

  Good seeing you.

• 1:08:44Andrew Santino?

Ladies and gentlemen, it is the end of an era. Will Mark bring back WTF? For sure he will. He says he won't.

• 1:08:51Speaker 07

When are we gonna air this? Cause I got an HBO special premiering August 1st.

• 1:08:55Andrew Santino?

  August 1st.

• 1:08:56Speaker 07

  Called Panicked.

• 1:08:57Andrew Santino?

Panicked. So appropriately titled, it's unbelievable. Go on HBO and we talked about this for a second off camera about how you said, HBO's always been rad to you and they let you kind of do whatever you want and they were-

• 1:09:08Speaker 07

Well, they gave me the time, you know, cause I still come from the old school where it's like, we're doing an hour. That's the special, that's how long they're supposed to be.

• 1:09:14Andrew Santino?

And they're like, just do 35.

• 1:09:15Speaker 07

  No, I can't do it.

• 1:09:16Andrew Santino?

It's funny that that's what they want. They don't care now.

• 1:09:18Speaker 07

Well, no, well, they want that because they've convinced everybody that everyone's a moron that can't pay attention for more than 10 minutes at a time. We're all just whores to the algorithm.

• 1:09:27Andrew Santino?

  We are.

• 1:09:27Speaker 07

But I was like, I, I think I gotta do 70. And they're like, "Okay."

• 1:09:31Andrew Santino?

  You did 70.

• 1:09:31Speaker 07

  73.

• 1:09:32Andrew Santino?

Panicked on HBO, uh, August 1st. We can make sure that this is out when it's out.

• 1:09:38Speaker 07

  Cool.

• 1:09:38Andrew Santino?

  So it happens.

• 1:09:39Speaker 07

  Thanks, pal.

• 1:09:39Andrew Santino?

In real time. I love you.

• 1:09:41Speaker 07

  Love you too.

• 1:09:41Andrew Santino?

We end the show the same way. Look in that camera, say one word or one phrase to end the episode.

• 1:09:45Speaker 07

  Oh, fuck.

• 1:09:47Speaker 02

In here, we pour whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey.

• 1:09:53Speaker 03

Who's that creature in the ginger beard?

• 1:09:55Speaker 04

  It's sturdy and ginger.

• 1:09:57Speaker 03

Like vampires, the ginger gene is a curse.

• 1:09:59Speaker 04

Ginger's a beautiful. You owe me $5 for the whiskey, $75 for the horse. Ginger's, oh, hell no.

• 1:10:05Speaker 05

This whiskey is excellent. Ginger, I like gingers.
