• 1:52Speaker 02

  My name is Billie Eilish.

• 1:56Speaker 02

And I feel really good about being Conan O'Brien's friend.

• 1:59Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, that's so nice.

• 2:01Speaker 02

  It's true.

• 2:23Conan O'Brien?

Hey there. Welcome to Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, joined by Sona Mufassian. Hey, Sona. Hello. And David, of course, hopping. Hello. And there's been a lot of chatter, I guess, online about Eduardo. Because Eduardo, I guess this episode just dropped where he called me a little bitch. And Eduardo, let's talk about this. People, it's blowing up. People are loving it that you called your employer a little bitch. And you, today, when it was all blowing up, admitted to me that you were a little rattled afterwards.

• 2:59Speaker 03

I was. I remember it happening. And I remember going home and talking to my wife. She'll ask, how was work today? I was like, you know, kind of weird. And she said, what do you mean? And she knows the hijinks. She's seen some of the videos. And I said, today, I think I went a little too far. And she said, what did you say? I said, I called Conan a little bitch.

• 3:20Speaker 03

  She just started laughing.

• 3:21Conan O'Brien?

Oh, she didn't say, oh, my God, that's too far? She just started laughing. Well, you know, I looked into it. And apparently, and I consulted my doctor and I talked to family, I am a little bit. So you are on safe ground here.

• 3:38Speaker 03

  I feel better than.

• 3:39Conan O'Brien?

  No, no, you.

• 3:44Speaker 03

It just felt weird, you know, to, I'm not used to being in a workplace.

• 3:48Conan O'Brien?

It didn't feel just right in every way.

• 3:50Speaker 03

  It was a candid moment.

• 3:52Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, but that's what makes it work.

• 3:54Speaker 01

It wasn't weird for you at all?

• 3:56Conan O'Brien?

  No.

• 3:56Speaker 01

Really? I think, cause I, I don't know how you guys felt, but I was like, oh, whoa, Eduardo went there. Nobody else felt that?

• 4:03Conan O'Brien?

When you say went there, it sounds like he visited a place that we all know about.

• 4:08Conan O'Brien?

He said the thing that we're all thinking, like it's the emperor's, you know, new clothes.

• 4:12Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 4:13Conan O'Brien?

  No, I, I wasn't, I think that's how I.

• 4:18Speaker 04

I think you matched my self-image.

• 4:21Conan O'Brien?

I think you mirrored how I felt. And I just, so I just felt like I was getting into perfect, I was stepping into a bath that was perfect human body temperature. That's how it felt to me.

• 4:32Speaker 04

You create an environment that people feel safe to call you a little bitch in.

• 4:36Conan O'Brien?

Yes, yeah. Hey, watch it. You know, you, you have to be careful.

• 4:40Speaker 01

Yeah, wait, is it cause Eduardo, is it, is he the only one who could say that to you?

• 4:45Conan O'Brien?

Eduardo has, yeah, Eduardo, Eduardo has all kinds of cred. He's like the coolest guy here.

• 4:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:50Conan O'Brien?

  And he designed the studio.

• 4:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:52Conan O'Brien?

And he's, you know, he, he's not thirsty at all. He doesn't need praise. He's just this guy. He's just Eduardo. He knows he's good. So when he says something that has a certain ring of truth.

• 5:04Speaker 01

He just insulted everybody in here.

• 5:06Conan O'Brien?

  Well, yeah.

• 5:09Speaker 01

Except for you, I know, by praising him. You're the only person in here.

• 5:13Conan O'Brien?

It's Eduardo and then just a collection of the worst people I've ever seen.

• 5:18Conan O'Brien?

  So, no.

• 5:19Speaker 04

You hired every single person in this room?

• 5:21Conan O'Brien?

I didn't hire you. Sona hired you.

• 5:23Speaker 03

  Thanks.

• 5:23Conan O'Brien?

I don't even think I hired Sona anymore. I was interviewing her. She offered me a drink. I blacked out and she was my assistant.

• 5:30Speaker 01

  No.

• 5:31Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. Roofed me and then you became my assistant.

• 5:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 5:35Conan O'Brien?

  But.

• 5:36Speaker 01

  It means you sign papers.

• 5:37Conan O'Brien?

Yes, many papers. But, um, yeah, I do think if, Adam, if you call me a little bitch, it would, it would upset me. You know, if you said like, hey, we're gonna do this dynamic ad insertion. Uh, it's a new policy, it's serious. I'd be like, well, I don't think I wanna do that. You'd be like, what are you, a little bitch? I'd be upset, you know? Blay, if you said, hey, lil bitch.

• 6:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:02Conan O'Brien?

Uh, I'd be freaked out. I would physically assault you. And David, that's just, would be a huge mistake coming from you. To call me a lil bitch.

• 6:11Speaker 04

  Oh, why?

• 6:12Conan O'Brien?

In what context would you say it?

• 6:14Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 6:15Conan O'Brien?

Let's think of a context where you'd say, oh, you'd say, hey, I'm, um, going to see Hilary Duff tonight.

• 6:21Speaker 01

I knew it was gonna be Hilary Duff.

• 6:23Conan O'Brien?

For the seventh night in a row, I'm going to see her, um, and then I'm following her to, uh, she's taking a vacation. Uh, and I'm, I'm following her and her family.

• 6:31Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 6:32Conan O'Brien?

I know where she's staying, that kinda thing. But if you said, hey, I'm gonna go see a show tonight and I have an, I have an extra, I have a third ticket. Cause, uh, Dustin and I are going, but Conan, you can come too. And I said, I don't know, I, I'm, it's kinda late and I don't think that's my scene, so I don't think I'll go.

• 6:46Speaker 04

And it's like, fuck you, lil bitch.

• 6:48Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 6:49Speaker 01

  Oh god.

• 6:50Conan O'Brien?

Well, wait a minute, why'd you add, fuck you?

• 6:51Speaker 01

Fuck you, my god, that made me uncomfortable.

• 6:54Conan O'Brien?

  That's way too far.

• 6:56Speaker 01

  Jesus.

• 6:57Conan O'Brien?

  What the hell?

• 6:58Speaker 04

I thought it would, I thought it would be like a new personality for me.

• 7:01Conan O'Brien?

  No, that was awful.

• 7:03Speaker 01

  That was not cool.

• 7:04Conan O'Brien?

Fuck you, lil bitch. No, that's not how you do it.

• 7:07Speaker 01

  Nobody liked it.

• 7:08Conan O'Brien?

Did you see him go to town?

• 7:09Speaker 01

He did. I think you gave him license to vent and then he vented.

• 7:12Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 7:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:13Conan O'Brien?

  Jesus.

• 7:14Speaker 04

Ten years of working here just came out?

• 7:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:16Conan O'Brien?

What if we, what if your mom heard that? What would she think?

• 7:17Speaker 04

We're gonna need to bleep that.

• 7:18Conan O'Brien?

  Is that true?

• 7:19Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 7:19Conan O'Brien?

  She'd be upset, right?

• 7:20Speaker 04

  She'll be disappointed in me.

• 7:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:22Conan O'Brien?

She's a good woman, your mom.

• 7:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 7:23Conan O'Brien?

Um, remember when I sent her flowers?

• 7:25Speaker 04

  That was really nice.

• 7:25Conan O'Brien?

Cause she taught me how to put.

• 7:26Speaker 04

After she helped you with your contacts?

• 7:27Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, we did a zoom and she taught me how to put contact lenses in over zoom.

• 7:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:31Conan O'Brien?

And as I was talking to her, corn grew into the window. Behind her. That's how fast corn grows around your house, there in southern, southern Chicago, Illinois.

• 7:41Speaker 04

  Southern.

• 7:41Conan O'Brien?

Uh, whatever. And anyway, and it was like.

• 7:45Conan O'Brien?

And then the corn went, I'll help too. Uh, wash your hands, Bruce.

• 7:52Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, talking corn in southern Illinois that teaches you how to put contact lenses in.

• 7:56Speaker 01

Coming out of the phone, exactly, got it, okay.

• 7:57Conan O'Brien?

So, anywho, um, yeah, she'd be upset if she heard you talk that way to me. But, uh, no, you just got mad props from me for, you know what, you, you, it was, I think it came out of your face because it was so right for you to say it in that moment.

• 8:12Speaker 03

Uh, testament to you, I, I talked to some of my friends like that, so I just felt very comfortable, you know, to, uh,

• 8:18Conan O'Brien?

So can I start hanging with you and your crew?

• 8:20Speaker 03

  Maybe.

• 8:21Conan O'Brien?

What do you guys do when you hang with your friends? Where do you go?

• 8:24Speaker 03

Depends on what we're doing. I got different friends for different things.

• 8:26Conan O'Brien?

Do you ever just drive around in that car that the Entourage guys had?

• 8:29Speaker 03

Uh, no, no, I don't do that anymore.

• 8:31Conan O'Brien?

  Suicide doors?

• 8:31Speaker 03

Yeah, I used to do that.

• 8:32Conan O'Brien?

  Lincoln Conan?

• 8:33Speaker 03

Just hang out, watch the game.

• 8:35Conan O'Brien?

  Watch the game?

• 8:36Speaker 03

  Golf.

• 8:37Conan O'Brien?

I want to drive around town with you and your friends, and I want to rent the same car they used in Entourage.

• 8:42Speaker 03

  Let's do it.

• 8:43Conan O'Brien?

  Can we do that sometime?

• 8:43Speaker 03

  Let's do it.

• 8:44Speaker 01

  Where are you gonna go?

• 8:45Conan O'Brien?

And play that Pitbull song on...

• 8:46Speaker 01

  Oh, my god.

• 8:48Conan O'Brien?

Back in, back in time, Men in Black soundtrack?

• 8:50Speaker 01

Oh, god. Where, what are you guys gonna do and where are you gonna go?

• 8:53Conan O'Brien?

Drive around, be seen by people.

• 8:55Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 8:55Speaker 03

  Just cruise.

• 8:56Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah, cruise. You just cruise.

• 8:58Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 8:59Conan O'Brien?

And, yeah, and then every now and then we stop off and we get, what do we eat?

• 9:02Speaker 03

  Um, some burgers, maybe?

• 9:04Conan O'Brien?

  Okay.

• 9:05Speaker 03

  Some tacos?

• 9:06Conan O'Brien?

  No. Why'd you say tacos?

• 9:08Speaker 01

Aim higher, he's gonna pay. You're gonna get some, like, steak at Michelin restaurant?

• 9:12Conan O'Brien?

You put a little, you put a little strength, uh, emphasis on...

• 9:14Speaker 03

It's tacos, what do you want me to say?

• 9:15Conan O'Brien?

You didn't say tacos the way I say it, you said it...

• 9:18Speaker 03

  It's tacos.

• 9:19Conan O'Brien?

  Tacos.

• 9:19Speaker 01

Why would he say it the way you say it?

• 9:21Conan O'Brien?

But if I switched it, if I switched it and, and said tacos that way, would you be offended?

• 9:26Speaker 03

  I'd be like, great, yes.

• 9:27Conan O'Brien?

You'd be okay with it? If I was like, yeah, I'm gonna get some mayonnaise, and then I'm gonna get some ice cream and some tacos.

• 9:33Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 9:33Conan O'Brien?

  You're okay with that?

• 9:34Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 9:35Conan O'Brien?

That's cool. I'm gonna start doing that.

• 9:36Speaker 01

Yeah, maybe with a lot of words, like quesadillas and stuff.

• 9:40Speaker 03

  Don't say it that way.

• 9:41Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, don't say it like that.

• 9:42Speaker 03

  Quesadillas.

• 9:42Speaker 01

Say it like, say it like he says it.

• 9:44Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah. Quesadillas.

• 9:46Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 9:46Speaker 01

Your, your voice is going lower too, you're trying to be Eduardo.

• 9:50Conan O'Brien?

  Quesadillas.

• 9:51Speaker 01

That's what you're doing, you're trying to be Eduardo right now.

• 9:53Conan O'Brien?

Every now and then I like to have, sometimes I like to have some Starburst.

• 9:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:56Conan O'Brien?

Then I like to have some Fanta, yummy, yummy, yummy, out of a can.

• 10:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:02Conan O'Brien?

  And then some tacos.

• 10:03Speaker 03

  Perfect.

• 10:04Conan O'Brien?

  And quesadillas.

• 10:05Speaker 03

All right, you can hang with us.

• 10:06Conan O'Brien?

You know. Um, yeah, I'm gonna, uh, we're gonna hang, we're gonna drive around like it's Entourage.

• 10:13Speaker 01

  My god.

• 10:13Conan O'Brien?

  And occasionally get a taco.

• 10:17Conan O'Brien?

My guest today is a Grammy award winning singer songwriter whose new concert movie, Billie Eilish Hit Me Hard and Soft, the tour Live in 3D is out now. And this incredible person was on the show once before. We had a blast. She's back.

• 10:36Conan O'Brien?

And I'm thrilled. Billie Eilish, welcome.

• 10:42Conan O'Brien?

We had such a good time last time you were here.

• 10:44Speaker 02

It was the best day ever.

• 10:45Conan O'Brien?

It was, that's a little crazy.

• 10:46Speaker 02

I loved it. I really loved it.

• 10:48Conan O'Brien?

Okay, but best day ever means you've had a tragic life.

• 10:53Conan O'Brien?

  By definition.

• 10:54Speaker 02

It was one of my favorite days.

• 10:57Speaker 02

I loved it so much. Phineas was so upset. Yesterday, we were in the studio and he had seen my calendar and he was like, are you doing Conan tomorrow? And I was like, yeah. He was really upset. He was like, can I? I know I don't have anything to do with the movie, but please can I? Anyway, so he really misses you.

• 11:14Conan O'Brien?

I don't know if you remember, this is a little awkward, but I, last time, towards the end of the podcast, I said, Billy, you're welcome back anytime. And then I, I don't know what got into me. I turned to Phineas, do you remember this?

• 11:24Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 11:25Conan O'Brien?

And I was like, you shall never be here again. It was weird.

• 11:28Speaker 02

It was very weird and uncalled for.

• 11:30Conan O'Brien?

  Uncalled for.

• 11:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 11:31Conan O'Brien?

No, I love Phineas. He's welcome here anytime. But I'm so thrilled that you were here today.

• 11:38Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 11:38Conan O'Brien?

The first thing that comes to my mind, I might have mentioned this last time. I think this woman has magical eyes. Look at those eyes there. I mean, you must get this all the time, but

• 11:48Speaker 02

  What do you mean?

• 11:49Conan O'Brien?

No, what I'm saying, like, her eyes are stunningly. But also, it looks like you can look into other worlds with those eyes. I don't have eyes like that. I have, like, suspicious creepy eyes. You have, like, artist eyes that look out and see new worlds. And then I'm like, hi, Billy, how's it going? Mmm, got him the ring, the ring. That's it. And you're just, there's so much, right? Am I wrong?

• 12:16Speaker 01

Yeah, I know, you're right. They're both blue. Both your eyes are blue. But you're right, they are, they're better on her.

• 12:23Conan O'Brien?

They're better eyes. Say it, it's okay.

• 12:26Speaker 02

You have beautiful eyes too, though, Conan.

• 12:27Conan O'Brien?

  No, no, no.

• 12:28Speaker 02

But thank you for the compliment.

• 12:29Conan O'Brien?

  Billy, I'm just saying.

• 12:30Speaker 02

  That's so sweet and ridiculous.

• 12:31Conan O'Brien?

Okay, here's what I was thinking about today. All right? This is what I'm thinking about. Uh, you know, I'm gonna embarrass you for a second, but the statistics are insane. Forty-four Hot 100 hits, 10 Grammys, 2 Oscars. And I had this feeling today, it's time to get out. Get a Hyundai dealership in the valley. Billy's Hyundai's. That's a good car. It has a good ring to it. A Hyundai. You know what I mean? Now, listen, your team, you came with a big team. They're gonna be mad. It's time to get out.

• 13:02Speaker 04

They're trying to open the door now?

• 13:04Conan O'Brien?

And, yeah, I bolted the door so they can't get in. They're like smashing at the lock. I just think, just think about it.

• 13:11Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 13:11Conan O'Brien?

You with a car dealership, I think you'd be, you'd do great.

• 13:14Speaker 02

I do love cars. Why did you think of that? What made you think of that?

• 13:18Conan O'Brien?

  I think the Hyundai's a solid car.

• 13:19Speaker 02

  But why?

• 13:20Conan O'Brien?

I'm just trying to get a free Hyundai now.

• 13:22Speaker 01

Because they sponsor on our show. That's right, they sponsor on this podcast.

• 13:25Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, is that true?

• 13:26Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 13:26Conan O'Brien?

  I don't even know that.

• 13:27Speaker 01

You've said Hyundai so many times that it's turned into your memory.

• 13:30Conan O'Brien?

I just love the way it rolls off the tongue. Hyundai. Hyundai, I'm looking for that car.

• 13:33Speaker 02

What do you, um, what are the, like, ads you have to do for this podcast? When people listen?

• 13:38Conan O'Brien?

There used to be, when we started out, it was really fun. Because they were, um, these, and, and listen, I, I love these products. I really do. But it would be like a company, a company, there was a company called Fracture. I'm sure it still is. And they would take, let's say you had a nice picture of you and Phineas together. Um, you would take it to Fracture and they would send it back to you and it would be etched into glass.

• 14:03Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 14:04Conan O'Brien?

And so I used to do these long runs where I would say, "The other day, someone showed me a picture of my grandmother on paper and I ripped it up." Because if it's not unclass, I don't have anything to do with it. You have to have Fracture prints. So those are the early days. Then when the podcast got big, suddenly it's these products that are harder and harder to kind of have the same fun with, except Lux Bidet.

• 14:25Speaker 02

Oh, God. What the hell is that?

• 14:27Conan O'Brien?

  Lux Bidet, it's a bidet.

• 14:28Speaker 02

  Bidet?

• 14:29Conan O'Brien?

And, um, yeah, I think you know what a bidet is. Okay, you've been around.

• 14:33Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:34Conan O'Brien?

  And...

• 14:35Speaker 02

  Love me a good bidet.

• 14:36Conan O'Brien?

They would write the most embarrassing copy. And it was stuff like, you know, after a big Thanksgiving meal, you can do some real damage.

• 14:46Speaker 04

And it was always to mislead you.

• 14:47Conan O'Brien?

And it was, and I didn't know, I started to read it before I knew what it was. So it's on the internet. Where is it? Where can you see this ad?

• 14:54Speaker 04

  On YouTube, right?

• 14:54Conan O'Brien?

It's on YouTube and I lost my mind.

• 14:56Speaker 05

Also, the second, they did, we, we love the Lux Bidet people so much. They actually wrote an ad where it started with a fake ad for like a burrito company.

• 15:05Conan O'Brien?

  Right.

• 15:05Speaker 05

And so Conan's like, oh, burritos. And then he's like, oh, my God, is this a Lux Bidet?

• 15:10Conan O'Brien?

No, they were tricking me. They were baiting me, but, um...

• 15:13Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 15:13Conan O'Brien?

Yes, I've humiliated myself many times with everything. But we're not here to talk about the Lux Bidet.

• 15:18Speaker 02

I'm like, which ads are you guys...

• 15:21Conan O'Brien?

How happy, can I just say one thing? How happy is Lux Bidet and Fracture right now? That one of the biggest music stars in the world is here and we're talking about their product and not getting paid.

• 15:35Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, I just wanted to say that. Well, I want to start by asking about your family. How is Phineas? How's he doing?

• 15:39Speaker 02

  He's doing great.

• 15:40Conan O'Brien?

  Okay.

• 15:40Speaker 02

He's doing great. He's getting married in August.

• 15:42Conan O'Brien?

Okay, and do we, do we like this person?

• 15:44Speaker 02

We love her. Um, her name is Claudia. She's wonderful. They've been together like seven years and, um, yeah, it's fucking awesome. I'm very excited.

• 15:51Conan O'Brien?

Okay. Are you gonna participate in this festivity at all? Or is that a secret? You can't say?

• 15:56Speaker 02

It probably is a secret, but yes, I'm very excited.

• 15:59Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, cool.

• 16:00Speaker 02

Yeah, so he's, he's really good. We're like in the middle of making an album, which is interesting because the last time I came here, the only time I came here was like three years ago, almost to the day. And it was also in the middle of a, an album process. And it was actually, I was thinking about this like yesterday. It was the day that we made Birds of a Feather when we came here.

• 16:18Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 16:18Speaker 02

It was like the morning after we had written the beginning of it.

• 16:22Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 16:22Speaker 02

And I remember coming in here and going into that room. You and I were just in talking.

• 16:26Conan O'Brien?

  Yep.

• 16:26Speaker 02

And I remember like seeing some team members. Cause all of my team was here for that. Cause they were so excited that I was gonna be doing this. Everyone on my whole label came. And I remember walking in there and going like, I think we made a really cool song. It's called Birds of a Feather. And I remember playing it for them. So with that being said, that's really, isn't that like a fun little thing?

• 16:45Conan O'Brien?

This is how I remember it.

• 16:46Speaker 02

We literally left to go finish it. Anyway.

• 16:47Conan O'Brien?

This is how I remember that.

• 16:49Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 16:49Conan O'Brien?

You came in and you were there with Phineas. And I said, you guys seem to be really tight. And you went, we are really tight. And I said, it's almost like you're birds of a feather.

• 16:57Speaker 04

Oh my god, I knew it.

• 16:58Conan O'Brien?

And this is what I recall very distinctly. Billy, you said, birds of a feather. Hey, there's something there. And I said, yeah, maybe an A minor.

• 17:08Conan O'Brien?

Remember this? And then you said, great idea. And you said, let's split the royalties. And I said, okay, let's talk. And then it never happened. I wrote Birds of a Feather.

• 17:21Speaker 02

  Nice try there.

• 17:24Conan O'Brien?

Anyway, that's how I remember it.

• 17:27Speaker 02

Look at that hair. Look at that fluffy hair.

• 17:29Conan O'Brien?

This hair is everywhere. And you know what it is? I left it.

• 17:31Speaker 02

Did you blow, did you blow it out?

• 17:33Conan O'Brien?

No, I didn't do anything. This is called, yeah, I went to a dry bar today and got my hair blown out. Cause I'm going to prom.

• 17:41Conan O'Brien?

No, I, I let it get a little long for the Oscars and then I haven't cut it. And that was like two and a half weeks ago. And so what happens is it gets to this point where it's perfect. And then if it goes like a centimeter more, it goes cutie. And that's boring.

• 17:57Speaker 02

But did you do it to yourself?

• 17:59Conan O'Brien?

I didn't do anything. It's just, this is me.

• 18:01Speaker 02

No way. This is your natural hair?

• 18:02Conan O'Brien?

Um, yeah, I mean, I didn't, I didn't. It won't play the same way it usually does where I can get my cool. I call it cool. Uh, wave in it. Now it won't do that cause it's too long and it's just a big floppy mess.

• 18:13Speaker 02

  It's not.

• 18:14Conan O'Brien?

  Looks like a haystack.

• 18:15Speaker 02

  No, it looks wonderful.

• 18:16Conan O'Brien?

All right, well, I'm gonna stick with this now.

• 18:17Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 18:19Conan O'Brien?

But here's what I also remember. I remember your parents were here.

• 18:23Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 18:23Conan O'Brien?

  And there was such-

• 18:24Speaker 02

  Literally everyone came.

• 18:25Conan O'Brien?

There was such a good vibe and I was talking to your parents, um, for a while. And I felt so good because I thought, this is a real family. Like, this is not, okay, let's pretend to be a real family so we can make it through this podcast. You guys were here for quite a while. You wouldn't leave.

• 18:45Speaker 02

  Nope.

• 18:45Conan O'Brien?

  Um, and then-

• 18:46Speaker 02

  I remember.

• 18:46Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, and, um, I mean, really for like an hour or la- hour later, I think you guys were still hanging out in the kitchen. It was really fun.

• 18:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:53Conan O'Brien?

  It was a happening.

• 18:54Speaker 02

  I'm telling you.

• 18:55Conan O'Brien?

But your parents were, um, very cool and kind of in a great way unaffected by it all. Like, they seemed like, these are people that just want their kids to be happy.

• 19:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:06Conan O'Brien?

Then I find out, I was reading some interview you did somewhere where you said, "Oh, when we drive places together, we all sing songs." You said, we're, yeah, like, like a, like a family from like the 1950s and, or in a, in like a corny movie.

• 19:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 19:21Conan O'Brien?

  Is that true?

• 19:22Speaker 02

It, it, it was true growing up. I probably said it like in a past tense, you know, like we did growing up. We're not usually all in a car together singing. Like, to this day.

• 19:33Conan O'Brien?

I like that image that, that-

• 19:35Speaker 02

  That's an insane-

• 19:36Conan O'Brien?

That now, at this point in your career, you two will be like, well,

• 19:39Speaker 02

  No.

• 19:39Conan O'Brien?

you and your folks and your brother will get into a car together, and I'm thinking a station wagon from the late 70s.

• 19:45Speaker 02

Phew. Yeah, no, that's, that really makes us sound insufferable.

• 19:49Conan O'Brien?

  Row, row, row, you bum.

• 19:51Speaker 02

Literally. But, yes, and you know what?

• 19:56Conan O'Brien?

  Sorry.

• 19:57Speaker 02

  Cracked himself up.

• 19:58Conan O'Brien?

I'm sorry, I cracked myself up and that means someone's always laughing.

• 20:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:01Conan O'Brien?

Um, was there a time when you would do that? Because my family never did that, ever. There was no joyous singing.

• 20:09Speaker 02

  Was there joyous anything?

• 20:11Conan O'Brien?

Um, we love to be around a ham, chewing it.

• 20:14Speaker 02

Chewing it, swallowing it too, or?

• 20:16Conan O'Brien?

Like, just chewing it and spitting it out like birds.

• 20:19Speaker 01

If it was hanging off a, like, string?

• 20:20Conan O'Brien?

  We all had a different.

• 20:21Speaker 01

  And you guys just all?

• 20:22Conan O'Brien?

We sat at a round table and each one, there was a ham, there were six hams on six ropes for each kid. And we would just go, "Ah, ah, ah." But, um, no, there was a lot of laughter.

• 20:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:34Conan O'Brien?

But there was no la-la-la-la, you know, singing along or doing harmonies or anything. You can't imagine my dad doing that.

• 20:40Speaker 01

Okay, well, to be fair, imagine your dad.

• 20:42Speaker 02

We weren't falla-lying. It was more...

• 20:45Speaker 02

It was more like listening to music in the car and all of us singing along.

• 20:51Conan O'Brien?

  Okay.

• 20:51Speaker 02

More like that. And, and the only, the only reason I probably said it like that is because my childhood friend used to comment on like how kind of, like surreal it was to be around our family because we were all singing all the time.

• 21:07Conan O'Brien?

  Right, right.

• 21:07Speaker 02

Like, singing and like harmonizing with each other and listening to music constantly, playing music, playing guitar and piano and like, so yes, music was always being played. But we grew up in the most musical family ever.

• 21:18Conan O'Brien?

Well, I think you have to be vulnerable if you're gonna sing with other people. And I don't think in our family, we were, we would have let ourselves be that vulnerable. I'm not even kidding. I think it was all about, I guess Irish people, they're being like super well defended and then making jokes and everyone laughs. But if someone was to start singing, the rest of us would have started throwing things at them. You know what I mean?

• 21:41Conan O'Brien?

So maybe I wanted to be falla-lying with my parents and my brothers and sisters. Um, you know, it's funny, uh, yeah, I, I mean, I, I do my version. What would you say, David or Sona?

• 21:51Speaker 01

  I think you sing.

• 21:52Speaker 04

I think you have a great voice, yeah.

• 21:53Speaker 02

I feel like you can sing.

• 21:54Conan O'Brien?

I'm playing music. I, I kinda play, uh, I play guitar and I love to do like rockabilly stuff, that kind of, um, so yeah, that's my thing.

• 22:04Speaker 04

You did a Newport Folk Festival show not too long ago.

• 22:06Speaker 02

Oh my god. Well, what the hell?

• 22:08Conan O'Brien?

  All right, well.

• 22:09Speaker 02

But so your family didn't sing or play music? Did they this, did they, were they playing music?

• 22:15Conan O'Brien?

Uh, no, there were very few records in our house. And they, and the records there were, were comedy records. But my parents didn't have, you know, yeah. Uh, but we didn't, we were not. And then later on, we started getting our own records when we were teenagers and, but, uh, my parents didn't have like a big record collection or anything. There just wasn't, we weren't that kind of people.

• 22:35Speaker 02

  Right.

• 22:36Conan O'Brien?

So, um, I would have not fit in with your family.

• 22:40Speaker 02

  Well.

• 22:41Conan O'Brien?

I would have been in the way back of the station wagon going, what's going on? La la la.

• 22:55Conan O'Brien?

You know, winning an award, that's a big achievement, right?

• 22:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:58Conan O'Brien?

Every now and then in life, maybe something nice like that comes your way. Winning them consistently is almost impossible. It just doesn't happen, you know? Well, guess what? Winning five times in six years? You know what that sounds like to me? Sustained excellence.

• 23:13Speaker 02

  Nice.

• 23:13Conan O'Brien?

Hyundai has done just that, earning the title of America's best SUV brand for 2026 from U S News and World Report. You are a very happy Hyundai driver.

• 23:22Speaker 02

I drive a Hyundai Palisade and I love my car. I love it. I love driving it around.

• 23:26Conan O'Brien?

When it comes to insurance, Farmers doesn't like surprises. That's why there's Farmers coverage on a page. What is it you ask? Did you ask? I don't think you did, but let's pretend you did.

• 24:32Speaker 01

  What is that?

• 24:32Conan O'Brien?

It's your coverage on a page, pretty straightforward. That's good, because sometimes it gets confusing, you know? What am I covered for, what am I not? Here, it's all on a page. Does your insurance do that? Get a quote to get started at Farmers.com. Don't be confused, don't wonder. Farmers makes it pretty clear. Underwritten by Farmers Truck or Fire Insurance Exchanges or affiliate. Products not available in every state.

• 24:58Conan O'Brien?

So, you have to admit, the holidays, it's really about hanging with the people you love. And getting to be yourself. Not going to some stuffy holiday party where you need to conform to what the man wants you to think about the holidays. Yeah, it's about being yourself. Turn your holiday time into Miller time by enjoying a Miller Lite in a place where you're free to enjoy yourself on a walk with a cousin. With a cousin? Why are they getting all specific about it? But what about a niece or a nephew? Um, like a walk with an ex-wife? I don't know, I mean, they're just throwing, that's a weird, they just made a very specific choice. Now's the time for those unexpected holiday side guests and enjoy a great tasting light beer.

• 25:41Conan O'Brien?

'Tis Miller time, as Dickens wrote. Miller Lite is brewed for taste, the taste you can depend on. The original light beer since 1975 and still iconic more than 50 years later. I like to be with my bros, my chums, my posse. Crack open a Miller Lite, take a swig, a sip, look around and see my friends. We've known each other forever and we're just hanging out.

• 26:04Speaker 01

Yeah, you guys are just doing chest bumps and high-fiving.

• 26:07Conan O'Brien?

Miller Lite is great taste done right. Go to millerlite.com/conan to find delivery options near you, or you can pick up some Miller Lite pretty much anywhere they sell beer. 'Tis Miller time. • 26:28Conan O'Brien?

We have something in common, which is I don't think you liked your name growing up, and I didn't like my name growing up. Let's talk about that.

• 26:35Speaker 02

Let's talk about that. Well, tell me about yours.

• 26:37Conan O'Brien?

  Uh, well, it's Conan.

• 26:38Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 26:39Conan O'Brien?

And, um, that didn't fly when I was a kid.

• 26:42Speaker 02

  Why? Wait, why?

• 26:43Conan O'Brien?

People had never heard it before. It was before the Conan, the Barbarian comics really caught on. So, early on, people were like, Conan, what's that? And then, once the Barbarian movies started to come out, I swear to God, everyone was like, Conan, what are you, the Barbarian? Where's your sword? And it was, you know, about 15 years of that.

• 27:03Speaker 02

  Jesus Christ.

• 27:04Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. Um, and, uh, so, no wonder I didn't want to be vulnerable when I was singing. Uh, what about you?

• 27:11Speaker 02

Well, for me, it was, I, same thing, like, nobody had heard it. Except if they had heard it, the thing that I would hear every single time I said my name was, "That's a boy's name," you know? Every time I talked to any child. Also, like, like, even adults would say, other kids would say, they'd just be like, "Billy's a boy's name." But isn't Billy a boy's name? And you know how kids are like little assholes, so they're gonna be like, "That's a bo-" you know?

• 27:34Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 27:35Speaker 02

And that really pissed me off, also because I was like, I really wanted to be everything girly as a kid. Like, as a kid, I loved, you know, all the things a little girl loves. I loved my princess things and my pink things and whatever. And so, Billy just didn't make sense. But in hindsight, I mean, first of all, I love my name, and I wonder how you feel about your name now?

• 27:55Conan O'Brien?

I like it. I think I grew into it.

• 27:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:58Conan O'Brien?

And I think that's what has to happen with your name sometimes. What is the name that you would have wanted?

• 28:02Speaker 02

  I can tell you.

• 28:02Conan O'Brien?

  Okay.

• 28:03Speaker 02

  Uh, Sparkle.

• 28:06Speaker 02

I wanted to be named Sparkle.

• 28:09Conan O'Brien?

  Hey, me too!

• 28:12Speaker 02

More realistically, I wanted to be named Violet, really bad. I really wanted to be named Violet. I wanted to be named Lavender.

• 28:19Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, wow.

• 28:19Speaker 02

Um, I knew a girl named Flower, like, very specific theme.

• 28:24Conan O'Brien?

  Sure, yeah.

• 28:25Speaker 02

Um, oh, also, I, my, like, this is such a homeschool-y vibe, but my mom, when she was pregnant with me, like, Phineas was four or three, and he would call the Belly, which I was in, Pirate? He'd be like, "I want Pirate to come out." So, they had named me Pirate, like, as if, kind of, whatever. And they were thinking and considering naming me Pirate O'Connell.

• 28:54Conan O'Brien?

Because this, because, because this child.

• 28:59Speaker 02

Pirate's a badass name. Pirate as a girl? But, but, yes, it would have been a little tough. And also bully central, I feel like. But at the same time, would have been cool. But I am really glad in hindsight, I'm not named Pirate.

• 29:14Speaker 02

That's some LA shit. That's some serious LA homeschooler shit.

• 29:17Conan O'Brien?

Someone named Pirate is listening right now?

• 29:19Speaker 02

  Yeah, literally.

• 29:19Conan O'Brien?

Sorry, if you're listening right now and your name is Pirate or Sparkle.

• 29:22Speaker 02

  But Conan.

• 29:23Conan O'Brien?

  Apologies.

• 29:24Speaker 02

Don't you, you feel like this? Cause I feel like there's, first of all, I love my name. And also I can't imagine any other name for myself at all.

• 29:32Conan O'Brien?

I mean, now I just turned it into, I don't know what I did or, you know, sometimes I think that the name can also help influence.

• 29:41Speaker 02

  A hundred percent.

• 29:42Conan O'Brien?

You a little bit. And so if it made you feel in any way when you're really young, uh, if it made you feel a little unbalanced or I don't really love this, maybe that's a good thing to have if you wanna be artistic, um, when you're early on. So it's possible that these names help us or we grow into them and they grow into us. And so I wouldn't change anything now.

• 30:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:08Conan O'Brien?

But I really did go through a number of years where I also wanted jet black hair. Like, you know, I wanted like jet black hair and I wanted my name to be like.

• 30:17Speaker 02

No, you were gonna say I wanted my name to be jet black.

• 30:20Conan O'Brien?

Well, I would have taken that too. Yeah, that would have been a good name. The name's Black, Jet Black.

• 30:27Conan O'Brien?

What do you do? I'm a podcaster, see? That's not too cool. Yeah, I would have, uh, I would have gone with jet black.

• 30:34Speaker 02

What would you have wanted your name to be?

• 30:35Conan O'Brien?

I don't, I just thought, you know, uh, I used to look at sort of the conventional people that were on television or movies, whether it's, you know, from Elvis movies or Bob Crane from Hogan's Heroes or like any of these people that have like just black hair and they've got that conventional good looking face. And I was like, that's how I should look.

• 30:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:55Conan O'Brien?

And what is it with this crazy reddish coiff? Why do I have this weird name? Why do I have freckles? I hated having freckles, you know?

• 31:02Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 31:03Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, true, yeah. I had my two front teeth were dead because I fell in the driveway and they were dead for a while. Like they died, like they turned gray and my, our dentist was like.

• 31:12Speaker 02

Like they were rotting out of your head?

• 31:13Conan O'Brien?

Wait till your other teeth show up. Just leave them. So I went around like, hi, you look real pretty. I had two gray front teeth. I've got freckles.

• 31:23Speaker 02

Were you also ridiculously tall then too?

• 31:25Conan O'Brien?

No, no, I got tall super fast.

• 31:27Speaker 02

Well, at least you didn't have that also.

• 31:31Conan O'Brien?

But wait. Because it's freakish. But Billy. It would be a little. But Billy, I have it now.

• 31:36Speaker 02

Yes, but you're famous and it's like, fine.

• 31:41Conan O'Brien?

So I'm like Frankenstein. You're famous Frankenstein, be happy.

• 31:46Speaker 02

But you don't have the missing front teeth and the weird, you know, hating of yourself.

• 31:51Conan O'Brien?

  Well, I still have that.

• 31:52Speaker 02

  Okay, fair.

• 31:54Conan O'Brien?

Fair, you should hate yourself. Thanks for admitting that.

• 31:57Speaker 02

You have a serious gift, which is this height of yours and that you could play a really scary guy. You could play, you could be, stand up.

• 32:09Conan O'Brien?

  This is humiliating.

• 32:09Speaker 02

Look at this fucking guy. Look at this one, look at this.

• 32:16Speaker 02

Damn, fucking Frank. This is crazy.

• 32:21Conan O'Brien?

  Wait, so what am I?

• 32:22Speaker 02

  You're so scary.

• 32:22Conan O'Brien?

  Am I Frankenstein?

• 32:24Speaker 02

  No, you could be Slenderman.

• 32:27Speaker 02

  Don't you think?

• 32:28Conan O'Brien?

  I don't. I can see it.

• 32:29Speaker 02

  You know Slenderman?

• 32:30Conan O'Brien?

You come in here and you're like, oh Conan, he is so talented. Oh really? My humor, my wit? No! You're freakish guys. You could be Slenderman.

• 32:41Speaker 02

You have such an opportunity. You have such an amazing opportunity. You could be so scary. Dude, dude, dude, you could, it's during October this year, you should come here. You should wear something spooky and you should scare these people.

• 32:55Conan O'Brien?

Okay, just what I'm gonna do, we're gonna contrive a way, I will, I will do it and we just have to figure out a way that I creep up on you in the background as Slenderman.

• 33:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:05Conan O'Brien?

Do you know what I mean? We just have to figure that out. We'll do that.

• 33:07Speaker 02

You could play like a skinwalker. I mean, your pants are tight already. Just get some tighter pants. They barely need to be very much tighter.

• 33:15Conan O'Brien?

What are you talking about? My pants are that tight?

• 33:18Speaker 02

  Your pants are so tight.

• 33:20Speaker 05

  Pants?

• 33:21Speaker 01

  For, for.

• 33:22Speaker 05

  Are they? They're very tight.

• 33:24Speaker 01

  They're very tight.

• 33:25Speaker 05

He wore jeggings once. Maybe he goes back to jegging.

• 33:28Conan O'Brien?

The Kardashians dared me to wear jeggings, I think. Didn't they? And I wore jeggings.

• 33:32Speaker 01

  You did wear jeggings.

• 33:33Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, that was horrible. There's a reason my children don't talk to me.

• 33:38Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 33:39Conan O'Brien?

Okay, so that's great. What an ego boost for me.

• 33:41Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 33:42Conan O'Brien?

My career is going places because Billie Eilish says I could be Slenderman. Or any freakishly tall monster.

• 33:48Speaker 01

You really could play such a good monster.

• 33:50Conan O'Brien?

  Or a zombie.

• 33:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:51Conan O'Brien?

And just don't moisturize for a day. And I could play the undead. All right, you heard it here first. I'll be showing up at a Halloween theme park near you.

• 34:01Speaker 02

Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Have you guys been to Halloween Horror Nights by chance?

• 34:06Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 34:07Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 34:08Conan O'Brien?

  Yes, I've gone Halloween.

• 34:10Speaker 01

  It traumatized me.

• 34:11Conan O'Brien?

  Why did it traumatize you?

• 34:13Speaker 01

Well, I went when I was like, I was younger. Did you go recently?

• 34:15Speaker 02

  I go every year, girl.

• 34:16Speaker 01

  You do?

• 34:17Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course I go.

• 34:18Speaker 01

Halloween Horror Nights is no joke.

• 34:20Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 34:20Speaker 01

They're legit makeup. The actors are really into it.

• 34:23Conan O'Brien?

They chase you, they'll like chase you out of a house with a chainsaw.

• 34:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:26Speaker 02

Yeah. It's gotten more, it's gotten more PG.

• 34:29Speaker 01

  Oh, that's weak. Okay.

• 34:31Speaker 02

Sorry. It's just not, they don't really chase you like they used to. They kind of just stand there and go, you know, and that's it. But, anyway. If you've gone recently, they do this thing to kind of make it like a more 4D experience where they, they like pump scent in certain rooms.

• 34:50Conan O'Brien?

  Sure.

• 34:51Speaker 02

Like really gross scent to make you really overwhelmed with the grossness of the... So like if you walk into one of the, you know, rooms during the maze and it's like a bunch of sliced up people and whatever, and it'll smell like this, like rotting

• 35:05Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, my God.

• 35:06Speaker 02

person smell. It's disgusting, it's amazing.

• 35:10Speaker 02

But... I, I'm not even gonna, I'm gonna say bless her soul and I'm not gonna put this woman and shout this woman out, but I was somewhere doing something and I was with this woman and she smelled exactly like the Horror Nights scent. And, and she kept like, I know this woman, right? And, and she was leaning over, I was sitting, she was leaning over and she was, you know, doing things and I was literally like, and I, and because I'm me and I don't stink really before I say things, I almost was like, you know, you smell exactly like the Halloween Horror Nights man.

• 35:48Conan O'Brien?

  Like a rotting corpse.

• 35:50Speaker 02

But so, yeah, so like, and I was texting everyone else in the room, like, doesn't this bitch smell like the rotting corpse scent that they sprayed?

• 35:57Conan O'Brien?

I think we can tell people it's Joy Behar from The View.

• 36:01Conan O'Brien?

Always smelled like rotting meat. And I love her. I love you, Joy. There's no one funnier, but no one will tell her to her face.

• 36:08Speaker 02

  Wait, is this true?

• 36:09Conan O'Brien?

No, I'm, no! This is how rumors get started.

• 36:13Speaker 02

Yeah, but like, the first thing I notice is smell. So if you stink once, forever, that's how I will think of you.

• 36:20Conan O'Brien?

I took seven baths before you got here.

• 36:23Speaker 02

Ooh, do you take baths? You can't fit into a bath.

• 36:25Conan O'Brien?

  No, I don't.

• 36:28Conan O'Brien?

I have terrible, I feel terribly about myself now. When did you become a freak? At what age did you become a freak? You can't have a bath? Does the US Army have to make you a bathtub? And bring it in with helicopters?

• 36:42Speaker 02

  Oh my god.

• 36:44Conan O'Brien?

No, I do not take a lot of baths because my knees always stick up.

• 36:49Speaker 02

So you are too tall for it.

• 36:51Conan O'Brien?

  I am, you're right. I'm insulted and you're right.

• 36:54Speaker 02

I'm very short and I have an enormous bath and I can barely fit in the fucking bath because I drown.

• 37:02Conan O'Brien?

  We should trade bathtubs.

• 37:03Speaker 02

Let's do it. That's why, honestly, that's why I brought it up.

• 37:07Speaker 02

Cause I cannot fit in my bathtub.

• 37:09Conan O'Brien?

So you're not here to promote anything, you're here to find out if my bathtub fits cause yours doesn't and mine doesn't and we're gonna switch.

• 37:16Speaker 02

I literally drown in that bitch.

• 37:23Conan O'Brien?

These are the problems that you have to face.

• 37:24Speaker 02

Do you fit into your bed?

• 37:29Conan O'Brien?

Well, my wife is there too, somewhere. It's a pretty good sized bed.

• 37:34Speaker 02

You have one of those like shack beds, right?

• 37:36Conan O'Brien?

No, I don't have a shack bed. I'm a human being. I, I don't have a shack bed. We have, one of those things you see in the Poconos, it has a giant, it's a giant heart and it rotates.

• 37:49Conan O'Brien?

Every night, I put, I put rose petals on it and I go, "Liza, my dear." And she's like, "No." So, uh, no, we have like a, you know, a big bed, but, uh, yeah, we fit in our beds and I am allowed to drive a conventional car. I wish it was a Hyundai, but apparently it's not.

• 38:11Conan O'Brien?

Okay, I want to talk about, you said something else, I was reading, because I was reading up on you. I was like, "Okay, I want to have some good topics." And you were talking about how you really enjoy hanging out, just like hanging out. And I was wondering, what is a good hang for Billie Eilish? What's a good hang for you? What do you like to do if it's you and your friends and you're just hanging out?

• 38:29Speaker 02

I love to go on bike rides, so much. Just a, and with an electric bike. I'm not doing any kind of working out really.

• 38:37Conan O'Brien?

  Right.

• 38:37Speaker 02

With the bikes. Because also I live in a very hilly area, so it's a lot of up and down hills.

• 38:41Conan O'Brien?

  I'm a big believer in e-bikes. I think they're cool.

• 38:43Speaker 02

I love an e-bike. Um, and I use this company called Super 73, which is these like, big bulky, it's amazing. I love going on bike rides. I love going on a dog walk. I love swimming in my pool. I love specifically like, any kind of activity that like, you might find at like a kid's summer camp. Like any kind, like on tour, we'll be like, in the most beautiful place in the world, and I'm like, "Can we please go to a water park?" Or can we go to a ropes course, or a trampoline farm, or like, we did a lot of, we did a few like glass blowing classes and pottery making classes.

• 39:20Conan O'Brien?

  Like.

• 39:21Speaker 02

  I love activities.

• 39:22Conan O'Brien?

You like activities. I like an activity, um, I don't love that much is playing a game sometimes because it triggers some part of my brain that gets worried. You know, if I'm playing a game that I'll misremember the rules or I'll screw up. I know it's a problem. I need to get over that.

• 39:41Speaker 02

Do you like any games or no?

• 39:42Conan O'Brien?

Um, uh, that's a good question.

• 39:45Speaker 02

  This is interesting.

• 39:46Conan O'Brien?

No, I don't know. I don't, I think I'm just not a games person and people will say to me, hey, let's play this. I mean, I do games on my own, like puzzles or crossword or things like that. But when it's a group of people and they say, hey, let's break out this board game and play.

• 40:00Speaker 02

  Oh, same.

• 40:01Conan O'Brien?

I'm kind of a little phobic about it.

• 40:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:03Conan O'Brien?

I don't know what that is.

• 40:04Speaker 01

My thing is I get competitive.

• 40:05Conan O'Brien?

  She's crazy competitive.

• 40:07Speaker 01

  I don't like lose friends.

• 40:08Speaker 02

Same, but I like that. So you, so that's interesting because I love games and I'm ridiculously competitive, but so you, you don't like games because you're really competitive.

• 40:19Speaker 01

Because I, I don't know if you just get nervous about, yeah, it gets too real.

• 40:24Speaker 02

  Right.

• 40:24Speaker 01

And if anybody on my team is just dragging us down.

• 40:27Speaker 02

  Right.

• 40:28Speaker 01

  I just want to.

• 40:29Speaker 02

  That, I don't.

• 40:29Speaker 01

  Not in her life.

• 40:31Conan O'Brien?

I know, I've seen her. She's one of those, she's one of those people that just in a blink of an eye sees red.

• 40:36Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 40:36Conan O'Brien?

  And descends into madness.

• 40:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:38Speaker 01

We're talking about games. You're talking about life.

• 40:41Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah, I'm just saying.

• 40:43Speaker 01

  Games.

• 40:43Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, I was saying you're like a Jekyll Hyde. You're a, I think you're a murderer.

• 40:48Speaker 01

No, but yeah, no, I get it.

• 40:49Speaker 02

  They crossover, you know?

• 40:50Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 40:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:51Speaker 02

What about like sport type game? Because we play a lot of like pickleball and I get, I'm very competitive with, with sports activities.

• 40:58Speaker 01

Same. No, I'm competitive too. Are you not competitive? You're not competitive?

• 41:01Conan O'Brien?

I try and hide it, but then I'm very competitive.

• 41:03Speaker 02

I feel like that's part, I can't tell, obviously, everyone knows.

• 41:06Conan O'Brien?

Because I think I'm too tall and this fits into your whole idea that I don't fit in this world. But you gotta bend over and like, take these different shots and I, I think I wasn't meant for this planet.

• 41:17Speaker 02

I feel like, I feel like you, it would help you because you're so tall. I mean, literally, we were playing yesterday and Phineas laughed really hard because I and our friend Lucy are, we're both, both very short and we were both just playing one on one and he, he cracked up because he was like, "You both are so fucking short that you have to step so many times to get to each side." We have to, I have to literally run full speed.

• 41:40Conan O'Brien?

He can't short shame you, that's wrong.

• 41:43Speaker 02

  He sure can.

• 41:44Conan O'Brien?

Well, I'm gonna talk to him.

• 41:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:45Conan O'Brien?

And maybe, I'll only lift the ban on Phineas coming in here if he apologizes to you. He's banned. He's banned until he apologizes for mocking you. I know which side to take here.

• 41:57Speaker 02

  Thanks.

• 41:58Conan O'Brien?

Um, okay, so, let's talk about the movie because the movie's out now.

• 42:07Speaker 02

  Oh yeah.

• 42:08Conan O'Brien?

I have a little note that says, "When this drops, the movie will have been out for a day." Wow, people sure love the movie, wink. But, uh, hit me hard and soft, this is, there's, this movie is stunning to me for a couple of reasons. One, uh, you co-directed this with James Cameron. That's insane.

• 42:28Speaker 02

  I know.

• 42:29Conan O'Brien?

To have him direct it is insane.

• 42:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:32Conan O'Brien?

Uh, but then to get a, to be a co-director with this guy is nuts. It's great.

• 42:37Speaker 02

It's insane. It was also his idea to have that be the case, which is insane. Like, he, the way it came about is my mother, like, met him through something else. And then like, one day I came over and was like, "Oh, by the way, James Cameron emailed me." And I-

• 42:54Conan O'Brien?

  Super casual, moms.

• 42:56Speaker 02

But also like, we have a whole team of people whose job it is-

• 42:59Conan O'Brien?

Your mom can get through all this level of-

• 43:02Speaker 02

  Literally.

• 43:02Conan O'Brien?

  People.

• 43:03Speaker 02

I'm just like, "He emailed you?"

• 43:05Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 43:05Speaker 02

  Um-

• 43:06Conan O'Brien?

Your mom booked you on this podcast. Your team was like, "Don't you Conan." And then your mom's like, "Go over there."

• 43:11Speaker 02

Conan now. God, so real, but um, anyway, she was like, yeah, James Cameron emailed me. Asked saying he wanted to, like, asking if you would be interested in him. Filming your movie and putting it out as a, or filming your concert and putting it out as a movie in 3D. Like, that was the ask, the, the, not even ask, like, just like, interesting at all, like, at all? And obviously, I thought, that's the most insane, unbelievable thought even at all. I was like, wha- what? Yeah. Um, and then I got on the phone with him and we just like, talked about it. And what was so special to me, I've filmed concert films before and they've been amazing. I've done documentaries, it's all amazing.

• 43:56Speaker 02

And honestly, it is a lot of work and I was not planning on doing that for this tour. And the tour was like, coming to an end in a few months and like, I remember feeling like, oh, this is sad that I'm not gonna have this show documented.

• 44:13Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 44:13Speaker 02

Yeah, like, I was really feeling like, oh, that's kinda sad, but also like, what am I gonna do? You know, it's, I'm not gonna film it, I'm not, there's nothing really, I don't have any ideas for something anyway. So it was kind of perfect, obviously, it's also an insanely incredible thing and opportunity. But I was also like, fuck yeah, I wanna be able to watch this show forever. This is like, my favorite show I've ever done and I was so proud of it and felt just so good up there. And it's just, it was just a really good show and I, I'm like, I was so excited. So that's like, the beginning of it and then like, he wanted to co-direct it with me, we met. He came to my show in Australia and then, um, and one of the, the biggest parts of the process that's been really special to me.

• 44:56Speaker 02

Is I, like, when I first started talking to him, I said very flat out, like, I have no interest in changing the show at all for this. I don't wanna modify anything, I don't wanna hear any notes, like, I love you, you're amazing, but. And he, he had like, kind of had already made that clear, like, he felt the exact same way. And I really was like, surprised by that, he was like, no, I don't wanna change any part of it.

• 45:22Conan O'Brien?

Concert to hit an iceberg about an hour and. He's just, he's stuck in a rut. And then he wanted the Nowi people to come in and fight the iceberg.

• 45:34Conan O'Brien?

But I'm glad you got him off that. Because he's so stuck.

• 45:38Speaker 02

  I know.

• 45:39Conan O'Brien?

But here's the amazing thing. He always loves to, and he did this with Titanic. He did it with the Avatar films. He always likes to bring this new technology to it. And I'm imagining that, I think that's part of what he's doing here.

• 45:55Speaker 02

  Totally.

• 45:56Conan O'Brien?

Is I would think, he would say like, wait, I've got a camera that I can use. It's never been used. Because I know it's in 3D, but I'm guessing it's not in the 3D that I grew up with.

• 46:07Speaker 02

  Probably not.

• 46:08Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 46:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, no, I mean.

• 46:10Conan O'Brien?

  Thank God.

• 46:12Speaker 02

It's like, it's pretty insane to see. Like, and I do remember throughout filming it, he would be like, you know, this technology's never been used before. Like, we were using things that literally was the first time they were used, which was such an insane idea.

• 46:28Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 46:29Speaker 02

And to have James Cameron be the one doing that. And also, like, it was very surreal because we were, you know, on tour. And that's a very normal thing. We're all used to being on at this point in the tour. And like, you know, he's like, I want to film some of your warm-up. I'm like, okay. And so I'm like doing the thing I always do. I'm in my room with my like, I'm wearing like boxers and a T-shirt, doing my warm-up and getting my ankles taped for the show. And James Cameron himself, alone, with an enormous 3D camera, literally like this, is walking in himself. And he sits like right here in front of me. And he's asking me the questions and he's the one standing there.

• 47:14Speaker 02

And then there's like four dudes that walk in that are like holding the boom and the lighting. And I just like, it was the most trippy shit in the world. It was just like, what am I looking at?

• 47:23Conan O'Brien?

Like wherever he goes. He's like, hey, James, you can come to our barbecue. And then he shows up and he's got a nine-dimensional camera.

• 47:31Speaker 02

It was like exactly what you'd imagine him looking like. Just standing there with a camera on him.

• 47:42Conan O'Brien?

You know, winning an award, that's a big achievement, right?

• 47:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:45Conan O'Brien?

Every now and then in life, maybe something nice like that comes your way. Winning them consistently is almost impossible. It just doesn't happen, you know? Well, guess what? Winning five times in six years? You know what that sounds like to me? Sustained excellence.

• 47:59Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 48:00Conan O'Brien?

• 49:29Speaker 01

Oh, okay. Well, that's a very thoughtful gift.

• 49:32Conan O'Brien?

Do you wear a wig or is that your hair?

• 49:33Speaker 01

Absolutely not. It's definitely my hair. And so it's kind of, it's kind of insulting you would buy that gift for me.

• 49:39Conan O'Brien?

Well, I'll just return it anyway, but I do wish I got cash back.

Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is so good. It's almost impossible not to finish it before the meal arrives. It's just too good to wait. That happens to me sometimes.

• 50:05Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 50:06Conan O'Brien?

You can try rules like no sipping until the appetizer arrives, or you tell your friend, "Don't let me touch my glass." But every time you're staring at an empty glass. So if you've ever finished your Coke Zero before the first fry hits the table, you're among friends. It happens. Occupational hazard with Coke Zero.

• 50:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:24Conan O'Brien?

Real Coca-Cola taste, zero sugar, too good to wait. Enjoy an ice cold Coca-Cola Zero Sugar today.

• 50:37Conan O'Brien?

There's this moment in, and it's, I've had staff members here who are huge fans, who, because I know it's in the movie, but they've also seen it. They've seen it on the tour and they talked about it. And I was really intrigued by this because you have this moment where you get, I mean, you're, these are huge shows. You get everyone to be absolutely silent. And that's very riveting to me that, first of all, to have fans that will do that.

• 51:05Speaker 02

  I know.

• 51:05Conan O'Brien?

Is, it shows a real, there's a mutual respect. And I think for you to be in an arena that's filled with that many people and ask everyone to get absolutely quiet, and then you create this musical moment with them not saying a word is stunning. And what I love about it is, yes, there's going to be this great technology and there's going to be all these amazing angles. But people also, I think, get to see up close what it is you do that is different. I think that's pretty amazing.

• 51:44Speaker 02

Thanks, Conan. That's so well said and nice of you to say.

• 51:49Conan O'Brien?

But that moment, when did you start to realize, okay, I'm going to go for this? Because...

• 51:52Speaker 02

Well, like you said, like when we thought, when we had that idea in the rehearsal period of the tour, I really was like, I do not think this is going to work. Like, how am I going to get the entire room to be silent? And, you know, it's not like, you know...

• 52:13Speaker 02

Somewhat quiet. It's like, it has to be like, nothing at all because what's happening is in my mic, I am singing one part and then it's looping and I'm singing another part and that's looping and I'm singing another part and then that's looping.

• 52:27Conan O'Brien?

You're building it in real time.

• 52:28Speaker 02

Fully building it in real time by recording. And so, and also like because I sing not like very loud, the mic is like pretty hot and so it really picks up a lot. And there was,

• 52:45Speaker 02

there was one time, I don't know where we were. It was honestly one of like five times in the entire 106 show tour of Hit Me Hard and Soft that they weren't quiet. And the only thing that happened was everyone was quiet except this voice.

• 53:01Speaker 02

  Billy, give me a blowjob!

• 53:04Conan O'Brien?

  Oh no.

• 53:06Speaker 02

  Oopsie.

• 53:08Conan O'Brien?

  That sucks.

• 53:09Speaker 02

Now, I thought it was funny.

• 53:11Conan O'Brien?

No, no, it is, it is, but it's also just-

• 53:13Speaker 02

  Holy shit.

• 53:14Conan O'Brien?

  But also I'm thinking-

• 53:15Speaker 02

And then that was in the loop. And so every, I'm like, Billy, give me a blowjob!

• 53:20Conan O'Brien?

Oh no! And it honestly got picked up by the recording.

• 53:23Speaker 02

It just was repeating over and over.

• 53:25Conan O'Brien?

Well, it was a number one hit.

• 53:28Conan O'Brien?

And now the guy's like, where's my money?

• 53:32Speaker 02

  But aside from-

• 53:32Conan O'Brien?

  I'm blowjob Sam!

• 53:36Speaker 02

  Oh god.

• 53:37Conan O'Brien?

  Where's my dough?

• 53:37Speaker 02

That was like literally the only time that really ever happened because their fans are so, and that was just like some guy.

• 53:43Conan O'Brien?

But also you know that the people around him were like-

• 53:46Speaker 02

Oh, he got completely, I mean, it, he got shamed by the entire audience. And I think like, this is something about my crowd and my fans that I love so much, which is like their complete devotion and also like their willingness to fight for what they believe in and what they love and me and, you know, really defend me and like the fact that they are all-

• 54:12Speaker 02

Respectful enough to be completely silent for an entire minute. While I'm singing and not make any noise, not sing along, not say anything, not want the attention. Like, it's really, really beautiful. And also, like, I was so sure it wasn't gonna work out. I've never tried anything like that.

• 54:30Conan O'Brien?

  It's scary, I would think.

• 54:31Speaker 02

It's so scary. And at the first show we did, we were in Quebec. It was the first show of the entire tour, and they were completely silent. And then I was like, okay, well, that's the only time that's gonna work. And then it fucking worked every single time, except that one time. And a couple times where they were just rowdy and screaming. But, pretty much for the most part. And also, like, the fact that I was asking them to do that is insane. It's an insane request, and I was blown away.

• 54:53Conan O'Brien?

Well, I think, uh, I think you have this.

• 54:56Speaker 02

  Really?

• 54:59Speaker 02

  An apple.

• 55:01Conan O'Brien?

Turns out he's like a neurologist.

• 55:03Speaker 02

  Oh, no!

• 55:05Conan O'Brien?

  Forty-four neurologist.

• 55:06Speaker 02

  Oh, my god.

• 55:07Conan O'Brien?

Uh, yeah. I've actually led the field in cerebral cortex therapy.

• 55:13Speaker 02

  He has a Nobel.

• 55:14Conan O'Brien?

  I don't know. I had a tequila, I lost it.

• 55:16Speaker 02

  Oh, god.

• 55:17Conan O'Brien?

  But, um, I think that...

• 55:19Speaker 02

  No, not poor guy!

• 55:21Conan O'Brien?

No, not poor guy, not poor guy. We're gonna find him. Um, he's also banned. He's banned, and Phineas is banned.

• 55:27Speaker 04

  That's the only two?

• 55:28Speaker 02

  And Phineas.

• 55:29Conan O'Brien?

The only two, yeah. Um, I think it's a tribute to you that your fans... You know, that guy excluded, your fans know you.

• 55:38Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 55:39Conan O'Brien?

They know you, and they're not knowing this idea of who you are. That's who you are. I mean, that's what I've... The, the two times you've been here and were hanging out.

• 55:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:51Conan O'Brien?

And I'm refusing to play a game, um...

• 55:55Conan O'Brien?

When you're here, I can see that, oh, that's Billy. That's just who you are. And your fans know that. There are a lot of people... In your business, or just show business in general, who, and I see it a lot in comedy, there's, people love the idea of them that they've constructed, but that's not really who they are.

• 56:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:15Conan O'Brien?

And so I, I think that's a credit to you that, yes, it can work. There's a lot of people it wouldn't work for because their fans don't have that relationship with them. So I think it's really amazing. I think it's cool. And also, the whole concept of so much of show business, especially in comedy and in music, is make noise and keep the noise going. And people are afraid of, I gotta keep the energy up. We gotta keep it going. And that's so much of it, that for someone to come out and say, okay, everyone be absolutely silent. I'm gonna try something, is very unusual.

• 56:47Speaker 02

I know. And they really play along, which I find so beautiful and also really surprising. And they're, they're like that throughout the show, too. Like, they're so, so willing and up for anything that I want them to do. And they, it's just, it's just amazing. They're, they are so wonderful. And I do think, like, you know, what you just said about me being me and that's who they know. It's like, it's true. I think like, I, I kind of attribute that to starting out at as, as 13, you know? And being the person I was already, which is like, always very honest and bold and like, says anything, kind of.

• 57:31Speaker 02

I was already like that. So I didn't think any, I didn't think to do anything else. And I was so young, I was just like, saying anything all the time and being myself. Like, I didn't know who else to be.

• 57:40Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 57:41Speaker 02

And like, I, even when I kind of like, sometimes wish that I maybe hadn't shared so much of who I am, I am really glad that I did. And also, and that I do, because one of my main goals, and I talk about this in the film a little bit, but like, I can't stress it enough, that like, one of my main goals as, starting out, was that I wanted to be the artist that I, that I would wanna be a fan of. And that's because I am a fan. I am a huge fan. And I always have been. And I've always been a super fan. Not just like, oh, I like artists and I like the, whatever. It was like posters and merch and, you know, if I could have gone to a concert, I would have.

• 58:23Speaker 02

And I couldn't because, you know, I couldn't afford it. But it was like, merch, concerts, or... Merch.

• 58:32Speaker 02

  I'm like, I couldn't go. I couldn't, no, but.

• 58:36Conan O'Brien?

  Now you're banned.

• 58:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, I can't, I can't.

• 58:38Conan O'Brien?

You misspoke once. And now that you're out?

• 58:42Speaker 02

What the hell I was saying. Um, but I was gonna say that I, like,

• 58:49Speaker 02

if there's one piece of advice that I can give, like, younger artists or new artists, and the thing that I have given to people, like, if anyone's starting out asks me, which has only happened a few times, like, what I would say, my one piece of advice, actually two, is like, play smaller venues than you think you should.

• 59:07Conan O'Brien?

  Right.

• 59:07Speaker 02

Or than people are telling you to. And get a serious, serious connection to your fans and be your fans' family. Like, that is the number one thing in my career that I will always keep number one in the priority list. And like, it's all that's, that's all that started. And, because it was me. I was like, saw myself in these kids and wanted to do everything that I, when I was 12, used to think like, oh my God, I, why can't my favorite artist do this? And why, why can't they make it easier for us to see this, you know? And so I've really strived to be that for them.

• 59:48Speaker 02

And like, be reachable and feel like, they feel like we are one. And like, they don't feel separated from me. And like, I don't want to be known by them or know them, you know? Like, I want them to feel like we are friends and that if I'm out in the world, you know, and like, be respectful, of course, but, but, but like, when I'm out in the world and I make eye contact with someone, like, this has happened before, and they just like, smile at me and I smile at them and they run up to me and we hug. Like, that has happened before because it's just, the connection is just there. We don't have to say anything. We just like, and, and you don't have to be afraid of me, you know?

• 1:00:27Conan O'Brien?

That, you know, there's a, there's a part of the movie where you're talking about, because you're very tactile. You're, you go out, you, you're touching a lot of the fans and you get scratches on your hands from your fans, just because they're so excited to lay hands on you and you're willing to do that. And I'm thinking, it's, it's not great that you're getting scratched up, but at the same time, you're letting them know it's real.

• 1:00:54Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:00:54Conan O'Brien?

Like, this isn't an act. I'm not. A hologram image that's been projected. I really, uh, this is who I am. This is what I care about. You guys are part of my crew and we're in on this together.

• 1:01:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:07Conan O'Brien?

Which is, I, I mean, I've always felt that's the way it has to be. Even though I work in a completely different world, I think, I, I look for any opportunity to let people out in the world know that, like it or not, for good or ill, this is who I am.

• 1:01:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:21Conan O'Brien?

  Um, and-

• 1:01:22Speaker 02

  Such a great quality.

• 1:01:23Conan O'Brien?

But I mean, that's, I think, really, uh, really key. I don't know, you know, there might come a day where you're like, enough with the scratching of the hands, you know, but-

• 1:01:33Speaker 02

Yes. It's, it can be a lot. I mean, also because it's like, the trajectory of things has gotten so much bigger over the years that at this point, it's not only fans in the crowd sometimes. Like it's, sometimes it's a little bit, like, it can be a little bit dangerous.

• 1:01:50Conan O'Brien?

  Of course, yeah.

• 1:01:51Speaker 02

But the thing is like, I don't want to be out of reach, like physically and, you know, mentally. Like I want, I want them to feel like I am right there with them. Um, and so it's like, it's, it's a hard balance because for a long time, it was pretty easy to do that. Like I, when I was first doing shows, every single show, no matter what, I would get off stage, walk straight into the audience and meet every single person in the room and like, take pictures with everyone, talk to everyone and sign anything. Like I've never, it would take hours and hours and it would be like hundreds of people and it was like, not paid, it was nothing. I just, I wanted to meet everyone.

• 1:02:28Conan O'Brien?

Well, it's also, it's staying true that that's a real connection.

• 1:02:31Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:02:31Conan O'Brien?

It doesn't have to be recorded.

• 1:02:33Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:02:33Conan O'Brien?

No one has to see it.

• 1:02:34Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:02:35Conan O'Brien?

You know it's real, they know it's real and that's, um, responsible for so much. That's a big part of everything that's happened for you.

• 1:02:43Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:02:43Conan O'Brien?

But I mean, it's hard to explain that to people that, that you used to get, when you first started working with me, you would get upset that I would hang out in the crowd so long afterwards or was it safe?

• 1:02:53Speaker 01

Well, when they get crazy. I mean, I'm sure there's been some situations for you where it's been hairy. It's the same for you. It's, it's, can get scary for the people around you. Who love you, who care about you, who want you to be safe. It can get, oh, nuts.

• 1:03:06Conan O'Brien?

And I'm acknowledging right now- Whatever I've gone through, Billy has that times a million. Because it's a very different connection. I mean, people, it's, so what I've experienced is people get really excited, but they, they really like some goofy video that I made. 28 years ago, uh, which is nice. I really love that, but you have to walk that line now where you can't walk into the arena and say, I'm gonna hang with all of you for 15 days. And so-

• 1:03:39Speaker 02

Yeah, it's been hard to figure out how to have the connection with them, but not completely.

• 1:03:46Conan O'Brien?

It's fun, because in the movie, there's a part where you're like, literally seeing your fans that are camped out, and you're behind a window, and you're banging on the glass, and I can relate to, you're excited to bond with them, so you're trying to, you're trying to let them, and they're so excited that you're banging on a window, and they can see you, and you can see them. It's just nice. I mean, people always try and pretend that this is more complicated than it is. It's really simple. The reason you started doing this is you wanted, you had something that you wanted to share with people, and you wanted that connection, and it's real, and now you can change the scale of it. You can have James Cameron, you can have futuristic cameras, you can have 15 million people coming to a concert and 8 billion downloads. It's still the same thing.

• 1:04:30Conan O'Brien?

The scale changed, but it's the same thing.

• 1:04:32Speaker 02

Right. And it's also like, with that exact idea, it's like, you can have boundaries also. It's like, you don't have to, I think I used to give my soul much of myself to that, that like, I kind of hit a wall where I felt like I lost part of myself a little bit, because I'd given so much of it to them, and as much as I loved doing it, I was like, whoa, this is like, really affecting me, and I, yeah, it's, and also like, again, when it got to a larger scale, it got a little less human somehow, like, people started treating me less like a human, which I get, it's like seeing Big, Big Bear?

• 1:05:15Speaker 02

  So Bigfoot.

• 1:05:16Conan O'Brien?

No, but skiing. My ski trail at Big Bear.

• 1:05:19Speaker 02

Listen, listen, no food in my body, just one coffee and an SSRI. Don't worry about it.

• 1:05:28Speaker 02

  Anyway.

• 1:05:29Conan O'Brien?

Hey, but this is real, man. This is you.

• 1:05:33Speaker 02

  Aye, aye, aye.

• 1:05:34Conan O'Brien?

But I mean, that's, uh, yeah, that's, that's one of the things too that, um, I see it in comedy. People get obsessed with, I played in an arena and I think, I don't know, that doesn't look fun. Like, I like it, there's a certain magical size where, and I think it's, it's obviously very different in music. You can, you, music is quite different and I think sometimes comedians get confused a little bit because they think, I want to be a rock star comedian. And obviously some of them can do it brilliantly. I think Kevin Hart can do it brilliantly and Eddie Murphy. There's different people that can go into an arena and they're fantastic. And then I always think for a lot of us, there's just the right size, you know, which can be, uh,

• 1:06:18Conan O'Brien?

you know, okay, 1,500 people or something like that. But once it starts to get to be more than that, I don't know that.

• 1:06:24Speaker 02

  It's hard to feel close.

• 1:06:25Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, it's hard to feel close and I do think music is better on a larger scale than, than just saying shit. You know?

• 1:06:34Speaker 01

  Yeah, I think so.

• 1:06:35Speaker 02

Yeah, I get what you mean though, because I had the same kind of feeling for many years. I was like, I don't want to play arenas because then I'm going to be far away from everyone and not feel like it's intimate at all. I feel like for comedy, it's like different because you're standing there talking to them. So it's like really a harder thing on a larger scale.

• 1:06:55Conan O'Brien?

You start to lose like this, if it gets really big.

• 1:06:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:06:58Conan O'Brien?

And I'm not one of those kinds of comedians, but I think that you might at some point lose that, that spark of immediacy.

• 1:07:06Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:07:07Conan O'Brien?

If the scale gets too big, um, and again, there are special people that can really do it beautifully. And I think I'm always craving, you know, um, sometimes when I see that the venue is really big, I'm like, uh, I don't know if I'm going to have that same conversational. Thing going.

• 1:07:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:26Conan O'Brien?

But, again, it's very different music and I think all comics wish they were rock stars. They just do, and me included. We all wish. We all wish, we all look at music and we all kind of try and pretend that that's what we are. And we're not. And then occasionally I'll meet these like iconic musicians who are like, "I really wish I could be to have a talk show." And I'm like, "Really? You wanna, you wanna wrap it up with Al Roker and go to a commercial? Um, no, I really do." Um, but, uh, well, I'm really excited for you. Hit me hard and soft, uh, and this is co-directed with you, James Cameron. That's insane. Um, just madness.

• 1:08:11Conan O'Brien?

Cause I have offered him a co-directing thing with me many times. Yeah, and he's, "So far, no callbacks." So maybe he's banned too from the pod. Um, I'm gonna say that I, uh, have great admiration for you as an artist, but, um, I feel a real connection to you as a person. I, I, I'm really proud of you. It's just a weird thing to say, but I feel like, I'm like a, you're probably your dad's age or something. But I have this like pride and like, "Well, Billy's doing a good job." It's like, well, who am I to take any, other than I wrote that big song for you?

• 1:08:49Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:08:49Conan O'Brien?

  Versus Feather. I did.

• 1:08:50Speaker 02

  Yeah, you did write that.

• 1:08:52Conan O'Brien?

Most half your catalog, usually the things that I-

• 1:08:54Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 1:08:55Conan O'Brien?

I'm just saying, and we're gonna settle this out of court. Um, I love the judge asking for any proof.

• 1:09:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:02Conan O'Brien?

And I'm just like, "I'm pretty sure I, uh, she said and then he said."

• 1:09:06Speaker 04

  You're just doing bits?

• 1:09:07Conan O'Brien?

No, I'm, I'm very, I'm very happy for you. I'm very proud of you. You're welcome here anytime. Phineas is welcome here anytime. Give my best to your folks and I just, um, you're a huge deal. And so you coming in and just sharing your talent and your wit and just your spirit with us is a really cool thing.

• 1:09:28Speaker 02

Thank you so much. I love coming here so much. I will literally come back as many times as you want.

• 1:09:34Conan O'Brien?

Well, we have a Hyundai and a bidet sponsorship now. Here's Billie Eilish for the Luxe Bidet. Hi, guys. You've had a huge meal.

• 1:09:48Speaker 02

But I, I, thank you for saying all of that. It's unnecessary and I, it means so much to me and you guys are all awesome. I love the vibe in here. I was just saying the other day that I just, I live to laugh and I love when I meet people that live to laugh, you know? Just amazing. I hate people that don't laugh. Just so fucking, can you imagine?

• 1:10:06Conan O'Brien?

I hate when people don't laugh because it means I don't get paid.

• 1:10:09Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 1:10:11Conan O'Brien?

And that's it. No, that's, that is my language. Like when people don't laugh, I'm like, oh, I, I guess I don't have a reason to live anymore.

• 1:10:18Speaker 02

But it's so wonderful in here that all these people are just, we're all just laughing at everything. It's just amazing.

• 1:10:24Conan O'Brien?

  It's good.

• 1:10:25Speaker 02

It's just what life is about, but thank you for having me and I'm, I'm.

• 1:10:29Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, it was a big, we really, it was a big, it was really big of us to have you. I'm just gonna say. And you probably didn't see that. No, it was.

• 1:10:38Speaker 02

I thought you were gonna compliment Billie.

• 1:10:39Conan O'Brien?

I was like, I don't know. I did say, is she still in the business? I mean, how's it going for her? If you were like, what are you talking about? And I was like, I don't know. I pretty much know what's going on with young people and I don't think she's doing so good. I'm an idiot, but thank you for being here.

• 1:10:56Speaker 02

  Thank you so much.

• 1:10:57Conan O'Brien?

And say hey to your gang for me.

• 1:10:58Speaker 02

I will. We all love you so much and I feel the same.

When you hear Alka Seltzer, you probably think heartburn, right?

• 1:12:17Speaker 04

  Yep.

• 1:12:18Conan O'Brien?

Well, did you know Alka Seltzer has a line of cold and flu medications known as Alka Seltzer Cold? Did you know that, David?

• 1:12:25Speaker 04

No, but I feel like we need it.

• 1:12:26Conan O'Brien?

Why didn't you know that, David?

• 1:12:27Speaker 04

I know, you expect me to know everything.

• 1:12:29Conan O'Brien?

  I knew this.

• 1:12:30Speaker 04

  Did you?

• 1:12:31Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, I've tried it. It's really good. And I like that fizzy, fizzy, fizzy when you drop the Alka Seltzer Cold into the water.

• 1:12:37Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:12:37Conan O'Brien?
