  Hello.

• 1:13Speaker 02

  Hi.

• 1:14Nilay Patel?

  Welcome.

• 1:14Speaker 02

  Hello.

• 1:15Nilay Patel?

Welcome to Vergecast. I'm gonna, I'm just gonna preface the show. Just.

• 1:19Speaker 02

  Preface.

• 1:20Nilay Patel?

  Preface.

• 1:20Speaker 02

  Preface.

• 1:21Nilay Patel?

  I am very tired.

• 1:22Speaker 02

It's a good name for a product, Preface.

• 1:23Nilay Patel?

  Preface, the Motorola Preface.

• 1:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:25Nilay Patel?

Yeah. The HCC Preface, I think, would be a flop.

• 1:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:28Nilay Patel?

  Obviously.

• 1:29Speaker 02

  Oh, boy.

• 1:30Nilay Patel?

Anyway, I'm very tired. As you might know, we did Apple Watch review this week. It, I basically didn't do my job this week. I like did that. Dieter did the MacBook Air, whatever. The MacBook shiny.

• 1:43Speaker 02

  That's it.

• 1:43Nilay Patel?

Review this week. We have basically just been.

• 1:46Speaker 02

  Joanna.

• 1:48Nilay Patel?

It was gonna be a surprise, man.

• 1:49Speaker 01

Spoiler. I was asleep on the mic.

• 1:52Nilay Patel?

  Joanna had the same problem.

• 1:53Speaker 02

  Joanna Stern did both.

• 1:54Nilay Patel?

Hello and welcome to the Vergecast. I'm just letting you know, it's gonna get weird. But, uh, I'm Eli.

• 1:58Speaker 02

  I am Dieter.

• 1:59Nilay Patel?

We have a special guest, Jay Stern, Joanna Stern.

• 2:03Speaker 01

Hello, I like to use this mic as a pillow, I'm so tired.

• 2:05Nilay Patel?

Yeah, we're all very tired. And then, my man.

• 2:09Speaker 03

  Yo.

• 2:10Nilay Patel?

  Hype Command.

• 2:11Speaker 03

  What up?

• 2:11Nilay Patel?

  Sammy Chef.

• 2:12Speaker 03

I'm here, I'm periscoping. I'm not really periscoping.

• 2:15Speaker 02

  Good.

• 2:15Nilay Patel?

  You know, it's a, it's a, it's a time-delayed radio show.

• 2:18Speaker 03

  It's fine.

• 2:19Nilay Patel?

The, the information that you're, A, one, you could be lying, and no one would know. Uh, B, uh, no one can watch your periscope, cuz there, there, it's later.

• 2:29Speaker 03

There was a, there was a hard split of people that were like, "You're gonna cannibalize the stream." And it's like, "No, we wanna see." It's like, "What do you wanna see? My face for 40 minutes straight?"

• 2:38Speaker 01

I wanna see your face for 40 minutes.

• 2:40Speaker 03

Thank you. Um, I just, I just wanted...

• 2:42Nilay Patel?

I'm, I'm looking directly at you.

• 2:44Speaker 03

It's, it's a, it's a great sight. Um, Joanna called me old, so for those that don't know, Joanna, um, used to work at Engadget with all of us, um, and she was at the Verge for a bit too, and so we know each other for...

• 2:55Speaker 02

  I was never at Engadget.

• 2:56Speaker 03

Well, us as in like me, and Eli, and Joanna. Uh, and basically Joanna called me old, and I'm 24, and I don't think I'm old. So Joanna, I'm, I'm a little hurt, Joanna.

• 3:05Speaker 01

Sam, I used to be your mother.

• 3:07Speaker 03

  Well, you still are.

• 3:07Nilay Patel?

This is your last year of freedom.

• 3:09Speaker 01

I gave birth to Sam when I lived at Engadget. And he was my child.

• 3:15Speaker 03

You were my Jewish mother, that is true.

• 3:17Speaker 01

  I was your Jewish mother.

• 3:18Speaker 03

And my Jewish mother called me old.

• 3:20Speaker 01

And I saw Sam get, have a bris, and then have a bar mitzvah, and he was a baby then.

• 3:25Nilay Patel?

She saw all of the Jewish events in your life.

• 3:26Speaker 01

I think he was even in high school, maybe, when we were working at Engadget. Were you in high school?

• 3:31Speaker 03

Uh, no, I was a sophomore in college, but same thing.

• 3:33Speaker 01

Well, you acted like you were in high school.

• 3:34Speaker 03

  Thank you. Stern burn.

• 3:37Speaker 01

  And he's just matured.

• 3:38Nilay Patel?

So once you were young, and now you're old.

• 3:40Speaker 03

  And I never...

• 3:41Speaker 01

It's so lovely to see. You look very nice, you don't, you're, you're, got a nice style today. I like your hair, you have your own desk.

• 3:48Nilay Patel?

When are you gonna get a girlfriend, Sammy?

• 3:51Speaker 01

  And when are you?

• 3:51Nilay Patel?

You should be the nice girl.

• 3:53Speaker 01

And I'm just so proud of your success.

• 3:55Speaker 03

Thank you, Joanne, I really appreciate that, but you call me old, so...

• 3:58Speaker 01

No, it was in a good way, you look mature.

• 4:00Speaker 03

  Thank you.

• 4:01Speaker 02

I mean, also, now that you're 24, you're gonna have to start settling when it comes to finding a girlfriend, I'm just saying.

• 4:05Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 4:06Speaker 03

I'd prefer to settle in Katan.

• 4:09Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 4:10Nilay Patel?

I don't know that that was quite the return burn that you thought it was. It was more of a, I prefer to be alone with a board game. Which is fair. I mean, if that's, if that's your speed, we're, we love everyone. I love you. All right, let's begin. Somehow. You're wearing a thing, I'm wearing a thing. What are you wearing?

• 4:30Speaker 01

  What?

• 4:30Nilay Patel?

It's just like, close your laptop, you're done. I know we have free Wi-Fi here, I know you're eager to use it.

• 4:39Speaker 01

  Free Wi-Fi, it's crazy.

• 4:43Nilay Patel?

Will somebody just come and your laptop again?

• 4:45Speaker 01

It's not like Starbucks when it logs you out every 20 minutes, it just keeps you on.

• 4:49Nilay Patel?

  That's it.

• 4:49Speaker 02

Somebody needs to come and read you guys a bedtime story.

• 4:53Nilay Patel?

Fox Media, we have free Wi-Fi.

• 4:56Speaker 01

  Love it here.

• 4:56Nilay Patel?

All right, tell me about your watch.

• 4:57Speaker 01

  I'm wearing a watch.

• 4:58Nilay Patel?

  What's, what are you wearing?

• 4:59Speaker 01

I'm wearing today my Melanie's loop.

• 5:01Nilay Patel?

  Is that the 38?

• 5:02Speaker 01

Yes, this is the small one.

• 5:04Nilay Patel?

  Okay.

• 5:04Speaker 01

You have the, you have the big one.

• 5:05Nilay Patel?

  I have the 42.

• 5:06Speaker 01

It's funny, a lot of people have been asking, you think they are?

• 5:09Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 5:10Speaker 01

Cause I was, I saw, I was on Fox yesterday with Lance Ullnoff from Mashable and he seemed to be able to hit the targets better on his bigger screen and I've been wondering, okay, is he, does everyone hear him?

• 5:20Speaker 02

  No. Yeah, just.

• 5:22Speaker 01

  Is he even there?

• 5:23Nilay Patel?

  That's it.

• 5:24Speaker 02

By the way, God is not talking to us.

• 5:28Speaker 01

I'm sorry, to the people who are listening, I keep hearing, I think, someone in the control room or in heaven, talking to me in my ear, saying I need to stay on the mic.

• 5:35Nilay Patel?

  This is way smaller.

• 5:37Speaker 01

It is, it is way smaller.

• 5:38Nilay Patel?

  It's way smaller.

• 5:39Speaker 01

I love the size on my wrist. I have really small, weird wrists and apparently hairy wrists, as the YouTube comments are talking about. And so, I love the size of this, but I, I have been noticing that people, like, I mean, I have normal sized fingers, right? And so, I've been noticing maybe, like, the bigger screen, you can hit the targets better. I think that would be a big difference for people.

• 6:00Nilay Patel?

Yeah, so you, okay, so just to set the stage here.

• 6:05Nilay Patel?

Like me, you've had the watch for about 10 days, something like that.

• 6:08Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 6:09Nilay Patel?

  You wrote your review.

• 6:11Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 6:11Nilay Patel?

Rupert Murdoch did a cameo in your video review.

• 6:14Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 6:14Speaker 02

  Which was amazing.

• 6:15Nilay Patel?

But both of us, I will say this, both of us adopted the same theme for the review, which is to like, basically describe what it's like to live a full day with this thing.

• 6:22Speaker 01

My video review was that. My, my, I wrote a written piece too, which was just sort of about fashion and fitness and that that would be my, yeah. My stuff was all over the place.

• 6:32Nilay Patel?

Yeah, just why, there's so many, so I was, my review hit 7,000 words.

• 6:37Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 6:37Nilay Patel?

Before Dieter tried to delete 1,000 of them and I slowly added them back over time. That's my move. That's how I do things.

• 6:45Nilay Patel?

I, I found it very difficult to review the actual product and not review the concept of a smart watch.

• 6:54Speaker 01

  Sure, yeah.

• 6:55Nilay Patel?

Because there have been smartwatches, Dieter's rang a G-Watch R.

• 6:57Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 6:59Nilay Patel?

Obviously there's smartwatches out there. They all do the same things. And this is, I think, the, the thing with the Apple Watch right now is that fundamentally, the list of things it does is the list of things a smartwatch does.

• 7:10Speaker 01

  True.

• 7:10Nilay Patel?

Right? There, it doesn't do much more. It has apps, but the apps are, they're not there yet. But like, it does notifications, it does a little bit of fitness tracking.

• 7:20Nilay Patel?

  It can send heartbeats.

• 7:21Speaker 02

Yeah. It can give you ambient information, like little widgets and whatnot.

• 7:25Nilay Patel?

Right. But like, it's a very, it's a very similar list. But what is also true is that most people don't know what that list of things is. So a lot of the reviews I read were basically like, here's this generic list of things a smartwatch does.

• 7:39Speaker 02

And about how, how they affect your life.

• 7:40Nilay Patel?

  Is that cool?

• 7:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:41Nilay Patel?

Uh, and you have to do it because the whole world doesn't know what that list of things is. But then you actually, I found it very difficult to not then review the Apple Watch.

• 7:50Speaker 01

  Right.

• 7:50Nilay Patel?

And how it executes those things.

• 7:51Speaker 02

  Right.

• 7:52Nilay Patel?

And there are so many ways to cut and slice and write about it that you, so you wrote like two wildly different pieces. And made, well, wrote a piece and made a wildly different video. Ours was just like this sprawling.

• 8:03Speaker 01

Yeah, we divided it because like, like you said, there's so many parts of this and Apple is, uh, I mean, it, I, Gruber's interview, uh, Gruber's review was interesting. He kind of talked about those three things they're talking about.

• 8:14Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 8:15Speaker 01

  And those.

• 8:15Nilay Patel?

And then there was like fanfiction at the end.

• 8:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:17Nilay Patel?

A young boy with a crush on a girl.

• 8:20Speaker 01

  Right.

• 8:20Nilay Patel?

And he taps her with his watch.

• 8:21Speaker 01

That should have been the lead as far as I was concerned, but, um, I mean.

• 8:26Nilay Patel?

Can I just have one question? I love John and actually throughout the, you know, you can only talk to so many people who have the thing. And so he had one, so I was talking to him a little bit. It's been great talking about it. But that story, I just, how does the young boy get the girl's phone number into his watch so that he can tap her?

• 8:47Speaker 02

  The student directory.

• 8:50Nilay Patel?

  It just really implies.

• 8:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:53Speaker 01

His friend who had an Apple Watch sent him a voice message with the number.

• 8:58Nilay Patel?

  It's just, I get it.

• 9:00Speaker 02

He force touched on the Apple Watch to save it.

• 9:03Nilay Patel?

So if you don't know, John Gruber's review ended with like.

• 9:06Speaker 01

This is actually like him saying that. There's so many things that this thing does. I just figured out how to hit reply on an email.

• 9:13Nilay Patel?

I just figured out how to make the emojis change color.

• 9:16Speaker 02

  What?

• 9:16Nilay Patel?

  Yes.

• 9:17Speaker 01

  How?

• 9:18Speaker 03

  Wow, that was amazing.

• 9:20Nilay Patel?

  So.

• 9:21Speaker 03

  That was comical.

• 9:24Nilay Patel?

So you go, you go to thirsty.

• 9:26Speaker 02

Here he is. Go to, go to thirsty.

• 9:27Nilay Patel?

So we named the smiley face thirsty. His full name is Thurston.

• 9:30Speaker 02

By the way, go to, go to Nilay's Apple Watch review and type the word thirsty while you're on the webpage.

• 9:35Nilay Patel?

He's our mascot. So you go to thirsty and then you force touch and he goes from yellow to red.

• 9:40Speaker 02

  Oh, he gets mad?

• 9:41Nilay Patel?

  He gets super mad.

• 9:42Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 9:43Nilay Patel?

Yeah. And then he's like steam goes out of his ears.

• 9:45Speaker 01

Wait, can you go to other colors?

• 9:47Nilay Patel?

You know, it's, it's yellow and red on thirsty. And then the heart goes from red to blue to purple.

• 9:51Speaker 03

  So he is now Quinn.

• 9:52Speaker 01

What about on creepy mime hands?

• 9:54Nilay Patel?

  Mime hand does nothing.

• 9:55Speaker 03

  No, that's master hand.

• 9:56Speaker 01

  No, that's creepy mime hand.

• 9:58Nilay Patel?

Anyway, but this actually illustrates your point.

• 10:01Speaker 01

  Seriously.

• 10:02Nilay Patel?

  The idea that.

• 10:03Speaker 02

And actually, it's from Zelda. Thank you very much.

• 10:06Speaker 01

Oh, this goes to blue. The hearts go to blue.

• 10:08Nilay Patel?

Yeah, I just, I just said that.

• 10:10Speaker 01

  I was, now purple.

• 10:14Speaker 01

  Back to red.

• 10:15Speaker 02

The red cast will be back after a short nap.

• 10:17Nilay Patel?

Okay, but doesn't this, this kind of illustrates my point? Like.

• 10:20Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 10:20Nilay Patel?

If two professional tech reviewers don't think to like.

• 10:23Speaker 01

  I'm not a professional.

• 10:26Nilay Patel?

At this moment, Joanna, I think that is accurate.

• 10:30Speaker 01

  You're so happy.

• 10:32Nilay Patel?

  Let me describe.

• 10:33Speaker 01

  It's insane.

• 10:34Nilay Patel?

I've known Joanna for a long time. We've been through a lot of things. I've never seen her in a state of childlike glee. Is it the purple hearts on her smartwatch?

• 10:45Speaker 01

Wow. But like, who would have ever discovered that?

• 10:49Nilay Patel?

No one. That's what I'm saying. What? I figured it out by accident today.

• 10:52Speaker 01

There's so many layers of this product. It's insane.

• 10:55Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 10:55Speaker 01

Like, there's so many things going on here.

• 10:58Speaker 02

I don't know about you guys, but whenever I get a new tech gadget, I usually just go super deep as I like, as deep as I can, like way into the settings and like screw around with stuff.

• 11:09Nilay Patel?

Like this, like, no, but this isn't a setting.

• 11:11Speaker 02

  This is more complicated.

• 11:13Nilay Patel?

You have to look at thirsty and think, what happens if I force touch thirsty? And the answer is you would never think to do that. Why would you think to do that? What other, like, if force touch is like a right click, it's a context, like, it's unclear what it's for. Right? So on the watch face, you do it to customize. On thirsty, it changes color.

• 11:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:36Nilay Patel?

On the Twitter app, it brings up the button for a new tweet?

• 11:39Speaker 02

Yeah, like, how do you, that's the only way to know how to do a new tweet? There's no, like, compose button?

• 11:43Nilay Patel?

Right. No, you have to force touch it. And then it brings up a button that says new tweet.

• 11:46Speaker 02

  So how do you?

• 11:47Nilay Patel?

In the workout app, it brings up the pause and cancel buttons.

• 11:51Speaker 02

  That kind of makes sense.

• 11:52Nilay Patel?

But why does that make sense?

• 11:53Speaker 02

But how do you know what it's gonna happen when you hit it? I don't know. It's a good question. But, and so, but the thing that gets me from reading your reviews.

• 11:59Nilay Patel?

You're still, you're still doing the hearts?

• 12:00Speaker 01

No, just I was, like, I was, like, what kicked off this conversation was me telling Dieter, like, I'd just figured out that you could force touch on a, on an email.

• 12:08Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 12:08Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 12:09Speaker 01

And like, you can get all the prompts to, you know, mark it on red, put it in trash.

• 12:13Speaker 02

  Right.

• 12:14Speaker 01

Um, I thought at some point I saw a reply thing. I don't know.

• 12:17Nilay Patel?

  You can't reply.

• 12:18Speaker 01

I know you can't reply in email, but there was, I think it may be if you force touch on an iMessage.

• 12:24Speaker 02

So what happens if you force touch on a glance?

• 12:26Nilay Patel?

  Nothing.

• 12:26Speaker 02

Nothing? How do you know? Maybe, maybe.

• 12:28Speaker 01

  Yeah. Look, it's for, oh.

• 12:31Speaker 02

I still think it's insane that the only way to get to a glance is to know that you gotta go back home.

• 12:34Speaker 01

There's no video here, but if you, if you force touch on your iMessage, you can hit reply, send location and details.

• 12:41Nilay Patel?

  Oh.

• 12:41Speaker 02

Ah. You can send location. That's cool.

• 12:43Speaker 01

This is like a whole new world that I've discovered just like.

• 12:45Nilay Patel?

Yeah, but I'm saying it's, it's the most undiscoverable thing on the phone, but it's also.

• 12:49Speaker 01

  It's a watch.

• 12:51Nilay Patel?

Do you accidentally call the phone all the time? I called it the phone on television like four times today.

• 12:57Speaker 01

My sister keeps asking how my watch, my iPhone watch is.

• 13:02Nilay Patel?

By the way, can I just say?

• 13:04Speaker 01

  That's what most people think.

• 13:04Nilay Patel?

Going on morning TV is the worst experience that any human being can have. I had a miserable morning, like just the worst morning.

• 13:14Speaker 01

Is this a humble brag like rant?

• 13:16Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 13:16Nilay Patel?

Dude, I got like mugged by the, the host of Good Morning New York. Like he came charging down the hallway and was like, is that the Apple Watch guy? And then he like grabbed my wrist, took my, took it, which I'm not supposed to do. I'm not like, he took it, put it on his wrist.

• 13:32Speaker 01

You're not allowed to do that.

• 13:33Nilay Patel?

He's like, I just want to try it on. And then he like pretended to get a producer call on his headset and ran away. And I was like, I just fucking mugged. I got mugged. And then I had to run onto the set. He went and started doing the show. And he was like, I got the Apple Watch. And I was like, I'm going to get arrested. Tim Cook's bodyguards are going to come arrest me right now. And at the commercial break, I had to walk onto the set and be like, I need the watch back.

• 13:57Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 13:58Nilay Patel?

And he's like, no, just sit down.

• 13:59Speaker 02

  Was it?

• 14:00Nilay Patel?

And so I just sat down. I was like, okay, I'll just sit here.

• 14:03Speaker 01

We're not supposed to allow other people to wear the watch.

• 14:05Nilay Patel?

  It's been a whole.

• 14:06Speaker 01

For those that, I mean, and it's standard for many NDAs that we sign.

• 14:11Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, whatever.

• 14:12Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah. I let my wife wear my watch.

• 14:16Nilay Patel?

I tried to get Pekka to wear mine. She was like.

• 14:20Speaker 01

And actually that was to me like one of the most interesting things of the week because it is, um, Farhad's lead of the New York Times, the New York Times review, which talks about how long it takes to sort of learn this thing. It's fascinating to try and watch someone learn how to use this.

• 14:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:34Speaker 01

And I didn't want to help it.

• 14:35Speaker 02

  So did you help?

• 14:36Speaker 01

No, no, I mean, and like I wanted video that, but we can't allow other people to use it. So, you know, whatever. But yeah, like she was just getting very angry at trying to use it.

• 14:46Speaker 02

What are they going to do in the Apple stores? Are they going to have like demo loops?

• 14:49Speaker 01

I think this is why they have all those videos.

• 14:51Speaker 03

They haven't released the rest of the guided tours yet either, which is really interesting.

• 14:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:56Speaker 01

Well, they don't need to till 24.

• 14:57Speaker 02

Those videos, like, watching them, I like, I photoshopped a thing of the original iPhone demo guy, and then like, a physicist did a chalkboard with formulas behind it, because there's so many of them. And they, they, there seems to be no coherent story between how things work in this, in this video to how things work in the next video.

• 15:14Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 15:14Speaker 03

Neelai, what you keep saying about the, the button, or the button on the, on the watch is 100% dead on. Like, that is the lock button on your iPhone, and your iPad, and your iPod. And it's like, you are going to, even, do you still make that mistake? Do you press that button to turn it on?

• 15:30Speaker 01

I do too, I do too. I feel like an idiot every time.

• 15:32Speaker 03

Because you know it's wrong, yet you still do it.

• 15:34Speaker 01

Okay, what, would you, should I put this in my mouth?

• 15:36Speaker 02

Yeah, that's basically where you need to put it.

• 15:38Speaker 01

  I don't like it there.

• 15:41Speaker 02

  Who does?

• 15:42Speaker 03

Um, but yeah, Joanna, you make, you make that mistake too, but you know it's wrong, yet you still do it.

• 15:48Nilay Patel?

She went from such happiness to such sadness.

• 15:50Speaker 01

No, I like, actually keep getting confused which buttons I should press. And that was one of the things I did highlight in the video, which is like, yeah, this interface is small, and then you, like, you know, that doll hands line, like, you, you wanna keep touching at it, but then you're like, you've got these other buttons, and you've got this digital crown, and I never use the digital crown to scroll through things.

• 16:09Speaker 02

Yeah. I mean, I like it. But sometimes it zooms.

• 16:12Speaker 01

I also got toothpaste in mine.

• 16:14Nilay Patel?

I've never zoomed anything on this, on, never zoomed.

• 16:15Speaker 02

You can zoom the apps, like, you can hit the app buttons, you can zoom into making a video.

• 16:19Speaker 01

I mean, it could be that I got toothpaste in my digital crown, and so it doesn't work, really.

• 16:23Nilay Patel?

Wait, what app do you zoom?

• 16:24Speaker 03

You can zoom into apps, right?

• 16:26Nilay Patel?

  On the, the home screen.

• 16:28Speaker 02

On the home screen, and in Maps, you can zoom?

• 16:30Nilay Patel?

But who, I never open Maps.

• 16:33Speaker 01

  Maps mean either, really.

• 16:34Speaker 03

Yeah, why the hell would you want to use Maps on a one inch screen?

• 16:37Speaker 02

So, I would, I would, I totally would. Walking, walking around New York City, like, I'd like, I feel like such a goon, holding my phone out, like, everybody knows we're there except for me, please mug me. But like, if I just like, have it on my watch a little bit, I'd be like, oh yeah, that way.

• 16:49Speaker 01

Yeah, one thing we cut from the video is me walking and saying, like, you know, if this was Android Wear, it would have told me already how long it would take me to get to work. And that's really useful.

• 16:59Speaker 03

  Interesting.

• 16:59Nilay Patel?

Yeah, I mean, it's just, the Maps for me load slow.

• 17:02Speaker 01

Yeah, they're super slow. I love that little part in your review where you have that spinning Uber thing because that's been my world all week.

• 17:10Nilay Patel?

Yeah, I haven't, the apps are slow, so I don't use them. And that's, it's, I'm in a humble brag again. All the morning TV anchors in the world are like, what's your favorite app? And I was like, notification.

• 17:20Speaker 01

Whoever just tweeted this is amazing.

• 17:22Nilay Patel?

What? Oh, the thirsty thing? That's our, uh?

• 17:24Speaker 01

  Somebody made that?

• 17:25Nilay Patel?

That's if you go to the review and type thirsty.

• 17:27Speaker 02

Yeah, go to the review, yeah.

• 17:29Speaker 01

  Is it like a?

• 17:30Speaker 03

It's an Easter egg, it's exactly what it is.

• 17:33Speaker 01

This review is like another level. It is like insane.

• 17:37Nilay Patel?

  No one slept.

• 17:38Speaker 01

I know no one slept. I didn't sleep either, but all I have to show is one video.

• 17:44Speaker 03

  And a selfie stick.

• 17:44Speaker 01

  And a selfie stick.

• 17:46Nilay Patel?

And what, what, are there greater signs of success?

• 17:49Speaker 01

  Than those things?

• 17:50Nilay Patel?

Alright, so I'm gonna ask you the questions that everybody asked me, Johnny. You ready?

• 17:52Speaker 01

  Yeah. Do you like it?

• 17:54Nilay Patel?

  Do you like it?

• 17:55Speaker 01

Yeah. Do you like it? Are you getting one?

• 17:57Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, yeah, exactly.

• 17:58Speaker 02

  Are you getting one?

• 17:59Speaker 01

  Should I get one?

• 18:00Nilay Patel?

  Do you like it?

• 18:06Speaker 01

It's just like, how hard is it to answer that question?

• 18:09Nilay Patel?

  It's impossible, but I'm asking.

• 18:10Speaker 01

It's so hard to, and then they want, like, it's like the first thing they ask on TV.

• 18:13Nilay Patel?

  Yep.

• 18:13Speaker 01

  So?

• 18:15Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, all the time.

• 18:16Speaker 01

  So, Maria Bartiroma?

• 18:17Nilay Patel?

Today on CNBC, they made a dick joke. This is true. This happened to me. I like sat there uncomfortably and then I made half a dick joke back at them. The what's his name, though? So CNBC is like-

• 18:27Speaker 01

  I do like it.

• 18:29Nilay Patel?

  Yeah?

• 18:29Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, I said in my piece, like, I wrote, you know, all these great things and sort of at the end, I sort of like,

• 18:35Nilay Patel?

Hang on, I gotta check my watch.

• 18:37Speaker 01

I kind of say like, don't get one, but it doesn't mean I don't like it.

• 18:43Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 18:44Speaker 01

I mean, there are reasons I don't think normal, everyday people should get this. And I think that's the right thing to tell people, but I still like using it.

• 18:52Nilay Patel?

So I think that's a really, so, but you like gadgets?

• 18:55Speaker 01

I love gadgets. That's why I'm probably getting one.

• 18:57Nilay Patel?

Right. And I love gadgets and like, I'm fascinated by this gadget. And I think-

• 19:02Speaker 01

And that's why we're gonna get them.

• 19:03Nilay Patel?

The people around us at The Verge are like fascinated by this gadget. And that's cool. And like, there's a reason we blew out the review because The Verge is read by people who like gadgets. Or at least a lot of people who like gadgets. Some people who hate all gadgets from one company, and some people who hate all gadgets from another company. But in general, gadgets are of interest.

• 19:23Nilay Patel?

But it's a gadget. It's the most gadgety gadget Apple has ever made.

• 19:28Speaker 01

Yeah, though I kind of think in some way-

• 19:29Speaker 02

  Uh, Newton.

• 19:31Nilay Patel?

  No.

• 19:32Speaker 02

You think this is gad, let's gadget, you think the Newton is gadgetier than this? The emate, the, the Batman laptop.

• 19:39Nilay Patel?

No, no, no, those things had like.

• 19:40Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 19:41Speaker 03

Dieter's in the eighties right now.

• 19:42Nilay Patel?

No, I, I understand what Dieter's saying, right? But those things were like.

• 19:48Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, okay.

• 19:48Speaker 01

I do think it's a gadget, but one of the things that I, I don't know if it came through in the piece that I wrote, but it does feel like more than that.

• 19:56Nilay Patel?

  It could be.

• 19:56Speaker 01

And in many ways, I turned this into something that wasn't as gadgety. I tried to focus over the week on, yes, the notifications, but I really tried not to go towards the apps. And like, as much as we enjoyed messaging each other, I think that it's a really useless thing about this.

• 20:10Nilay Patel?

  Yep.

• 20:11Speaker 01

  Piece of technology.

• 20:12Nilay Patel?

  That's my heartbeat, buddy.

• 20:12Speaker 01

Yeah. You know that Kelly Clarkson song?

• 20:15Speaker 02

  The Beadrum?

• 20:16Speaker 01

  This is my heartbeat song.

• 20:17Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 20:18Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 20:18Nilay Patel?

Did you, did you sing that every time you sent me your heartbeat?

• 20:20Speaker 01

Yeah, I sent it, I sang it in my head.

• 20:22Nilay Patel?

  She sent me, um.

• 20:23Speaker 01

But I think like, when I used it, I, I really did really enjoy using this as a watch and sort of as this device that keeps me on schedule. I love having my calendar on my wrist for some odd reason.

• 20:33Speaker 02

Did it turn on when you looked at it? And like, Joe Gerber was complaining like, he's like, it ticks slow.

• 20:38Speaker 01

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

• 20:39Speaker 02

That's, that, that would have been nuts.

• 20:41Speaker 03

You have to do like the, the, the whole gesture thing to like.

• 20:43Speaker 01

I honestly have been feeling like, since I showered with it, maybe it doesn't work as well.

• 20:47Speaker 03

Oh, you did shower with it?

• 20:48Speaker 02

Did you not watch her video?

• 20:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:50Speaker 03

  No, I have not yet.

• 20:50Speaker 02

She strapped a DSLR to her face.

• 20:52Speaker 03

I saw, I saw the pictures. I haven't seen the video yet.

• 20:54Speaker 01

  No, I mean.

• 20:55Speaker 03

  You showered with it?

• 20:56Speaker 01

I showered it with it. And I mean, also I got toothpaste in it, so.

• 20:59Speaker 02

How do you pull that off?

• 21:01Speaker 03

Joanna brushes her teeth with her wrist.

• 21:03Speaker 01

Yeah, I was just going to.

• 21:05Speaker 03

  Um, can you tell me?

• 21:06Speaker 01

So I mean, just back to that point, and I really do think as a fitness device, I know a lot of the reviews have been focusing on sort of like, you didn't think it was as good. I think it's actually a really good fitness device. I think it has this huge potential to be that. And that is a gadget, but I think has this potential just to kind of fade to the background and that's a really good thing.

• 21:26Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 21:26Speaker 01

  So, um, yeah.

• 21:29Nilay Patel?

Now, and I think you and I talked about this while we were writing these, it's. So, like I said, it's easy to fall into the trap of reviewing the concept of a smartwatch. It was equally easy to fall into the trap of reviewing the potential of the Apple Watch.

• 21:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:45Nilay Patel?

And I struggled just mightily to review this product at this moment in time against what is an insane range of prices.

• 21:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:55Nilay Patel?

That was the other thing that like killed me. Because if I had gotten the cheaper one that was like 350, I wouldn't have gotten that one. I would have gotten the $400 Sport, the bigger Sport.

• 22:05Speaker 01

  You're getting that one, right?

• 22:06Nilay Patel?

That's probably the one, even if I buy one, that's the one I buy.

• 22:08Speaker 03

  That's what I'm getting.

• 22:09Nilay Patel?

But if I had gotten that one instead of the $700 Apple Watch with leather moves, I don't know if I would have thought about it totally differently. But every time I told anybody this watch is $700, they would like gasp.

• 22:22Speaker 01

  This is 650, yeah.

• 22:23Nilay Patel?

  And it's, that's a lot. That's just a lot of money.

• 22:26Speaker 01

What if I get the 38mm with that leather band? How much is it? Pipe check? You're not price check?

• 22:34Speaker 03

Are you? Are you asking me to pipe check or are you asking me to price check?

• 22:38Speaker 01

  Sorry, price check?

• 22:39Nilay Patel?

  There's a long tradition of...

• 22:40Speaker 01

We get a price check in I O five.

• 22:42Speaker 02

Is this black, this black Sport model, this gonna scratch? Is it gonna, is the black gonna hold up?

• 22:48Nilay Patel?

  Huh?

• 22:49Speaker 02

Is the black gonna hold up on this Sport model?

• 22:51Speaker 01

What do you mean, the band?

• 22:52Speaker 02

Yeah, no, I mean, the... The anodization, yeah.

• 22:55Nilay Patel?

So I had, well, it might ding, so I had, my, I've only held one like ever so briefly, that model. But it was very much like, you know, the iPod classics when they were black.

• 23:06Speaker 03

Ooh. Oh, interesting. It's like Matty a little bit?

• 23:10Nilay Patel?

Yeah, it's like Matty. So it didn't scratch badly, but you could definitely ding them.

• 23:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:14Nilay Patel?

But I don't know if it's exactly the same.

• 23:16Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 23:16Nilay Patel?

That's just what it reminded me of. I will say that the stainless steel one is, is getting dinged up. This one is very much like, you know, when iPods had stainless steel backs?

• 23:25Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:25Nilay Patel?

  That's what this is like.

• 23:27Speaker 03

  That's crazy?

• 23:28Nilay Patel?

Yeah, people have already noticed in the videos, and like literally all I did with this, all I did with it really this week is like make videos with it, right?

• 23:36Speaker 02

Yeah, and you set it on a table every now and then.

• 23:38Speaker 03

  You just wore it?

• 23:39Nilay Patel?

Well, I wore it, but like when you make a video, like you're constantly like looking at it and polishing it.

• 23:43Speaker 01

I didn't make any videos, I did it on purpose for the first three days. What day did we get it last week? Monday?

• 23:48Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 23:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, first three days.

• 23:51Speaker 02

You didn't, you just wanted to like?

• 23:52Speaker 01

  Use it.

• 23:53Speaker 02

Get it and figure it out, yeah.

• 23:55Speaker 01

Yeah, I didn't start wearing the helmet till Friday. Thursday night, Thursday night with the helmet. Yeah. Um, I don't remember where I was going with that, but someone did just tweet to me that, so it's a great fitness device, but it can't even make it through the shower. It actually can make it through the shower. I say that because I'm like a little bit worried that maybe something happened to it. And I'm like, very paranoid Jewish person.

• 24:16Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 24:19Speaker 01

  But, uh.

• 24:19Nilay Patel?

Sam and Joanna just like seriously exchanged a look like a, you know me.

• 24:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:23Speaker 03

  We had a moment.

• 24:25Speaker 01

But, um, no, I mean, it can definitely withstand like a ton of sweat and Apple says that it's, it's fine for even taking the shower, but it should not, just not get soap and shampoo on it. And that's why, I mean, another reason it just is not a good idea to get anything on it, I guess. But it, you can't submerge it in water.

• 24:43Speaker 03

So should you or should you not shower with it?

• 24:46Speaker 01

You should probably not shower with it, but nothing happened to this one.

• 24:50Speaker 02

  Don't worry about it.

• 24:51Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 24:52Speaker 01

Yeah. If you're, right. That's what they say.

• 24:53Speaker 03

Cause like, I, I don't want to have to take this off.

• 24:56Speaker 01

You do, I mean, you should take it off, I think.

• 24:58Nilay Patel?

You should definitely take it off.

• 24:59Speaker 03

  Why?

• 24:59Speaker 01

I mean, certainly if you buy a very expensive version, you should take it off.

• 25:02Speaker 03

  Sport for sure.

• 25:03Nilay Patel?

How are you gonna charge it if you don't take it off?

• 25:05Speaker 03

  So my, my theory.

• 25:06Speaker 02

He's gonna slip the thing in between the wrist.

• 25:08Speaker 03

My, yeah, I'm gonna walk around the juice pack in my pocket. No, my theory with this, not really a theory.

• 25:13Nilay Patel?

So I'm so tired. I thought you meant a juice, like a juice box. Like I, I was like, what the hell is Sam talking about?

• 25:20Speaker 03

I, I want to, I want to wear the watch until it dies and then charge it. So like, if it dies at two in the afternoon, because like I've used it and then, you know, I just want to be on that cycle. I don't want to like, oh, it's nighttime, take it off, put in the charger and then.

• 25:34Nilay Patel?

You're gonna a hundred percent be on that cycle.

• 25:36Speaker 01

Why wouldn't you want to do that? It does nothing for you when you're sleeping.

• 25:41Speaker 03

Does it not? It doesn't track your sleep?

• 25:43Speaker 01

It does not track your sleep.

• 25:43Speaker 02

  No.

• 25:45Speaker 01

I meant to put that in my review too, and I didn't.

• 25:47Nilay Patel?

Sam, let's, let's just do it. You read, you read ours, I hope.

• 25:50Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 25:51Nilay Patel?

  You read, you read Sternos?

• 25:52Speaker 03

  I haven't read, I haven't read any others, truthfully.

• 25:54Nilay Patel?

  Well, you just read ours.

• 25:55Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 25:55Nilay Patel?

Okay. But let's just, but you've got a general vibe.

• 25:58Speaker 01

Did you read, be honest, did you read all 7,000 words?

• 26:01Speaker 03

Uh, no, I got around, I got like 65% through and then I watched the video.

• 26:06Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 26:07Nilay Patel?

  The video's there.

• 26:08Speaker 01

I did the opposite. I read it all.

• 26:10Nilay Patel?

Well, I mean, hype check Apple watch.

• 26:13Speaker 03

Oh, did you see the Vergecast post? It's approaching dangerous levels right now.

• 26:17Nilay Patel?

  Really?

• 26:18Speaker 03

Yeah. There are like every normal and random is like, random and normal. Are, are talking about this now, like this is it. This is the Apple Watch. It's here, it's coming. It's 10 out of 10.

• 26:30Nilay Patel?

Right. 10 out of 10 hype.

• 26:31Speaker 03

10 out of 10 hype. Um, I'm buying one.

• 26:33Nilay Patel?

  Check.

• 26:37Speaker 03

I mean, the reviews are like.

• 26:39Nilay Patel?

  Formula.

• 26:40Speaker 03

The reviews are like, you know? It's like a nice thing, but it's like, do you need it? Do you want it? Is it for you? Are you gonna buy one? It's not like you need to buy this like,

• 26:51Speaker 03

hmm, I don't know, probably like six and a half or seven.

• 26:54Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 26:54Speaker 03

  Realistically.

• 26:55Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 26:56Speaker 03

  But I'm buying one.

• 26:57Nilay Patel?

  What are you typing?

• 26:58Speaker 01

  I'm rep- I'm replying to a tweet.

• 27:03Nilay Patel?

  Shut down her wifi.

• 27:05Speaker 03

  Dieter, are you buying one?

• 27:06Speaker 02

So if I were not an editor at theverge.com, I probably would not.

• 27:13Speaker 01

  Right. Yeah, I'm with you.

• 27:14Speaker 03

You know what, Dieter? You are an editor at theverge.com.

• 27:18Nilay Patel?

If you were you, like your personality.

• 27:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:22Nilay Patel?

  And you like loved gadgets.

• 27:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:25Nilay Patel?

  But the one.

• 27:26Speaker 02

I would wait. No, no, like this is like, I, I love gadgets. I buy the first versions of lots of things that I ought not buy the first version of. But the consistently, everybody said it takes a tick to turn on when you look at it because it's not on all the time. And it's kind of slow.

• 27:42Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 27:42Speaker 01

It does really, most of the time it is very.

• 27:45Speaker 02

I don't want my, I'm already on. I'm already on a yearly cycle of spending somewhere in the neighborhood of $500, $600 on a phone.

• 27:52Nilay Patel?

Alright, I'm gonna snap when I pull.

• 27:53Speaker 02

I don't want another yearly cycle of spending $400 on a watch.

• 27:56Speaker 01

So what are you gonna do?

• 27:57Speaker 02

I will buy a watch, but I wanna do it.

• 27:59Speaker 03

I don't, I don't think they're gonna come out every year and I think they're gonna slash the prices.

• 28:03Speaker 02

You think they're gonna slash the prices?

• 28:05Nilay Patel?

No, I really feel like they're coming out every year.

• 28:06Speaker 01

I think they're coming out with them. I think the first generation will be updated within a year and a half.

• 28:11Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 28:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:12Nilay Patel?

I think, so here's my theory on performance and battery life. So have you noticed this? I go from 100% battery life to 85% relatively fast.

• 28:22Speaker 01

  That's the iPhone.

• 28:23Nilay Patel?

That last 15% is like a war march. Is that a phrase?

• 28:28Speaker 02

  Death march.

• 28:29Nilay Patel?

Death march. It is just endless. It's just like, the last 15% of the battery lasts for-

• 28:34Speaker 03

Isn't that the experience on the iPhone too? I feel like, like, most people freak out when they get down to 20%. But if you actually use your phone when it's down to 20%, it chugs. You can get through a significant amount. Like, for your phone to actually die, you have to be like, using Google Maps at 1% and like, really, really kicking it.

• 28:52Nilay Patel?

I kill my phone all the time.

• 28:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:54Nilay Patel?

My phone dies at 3% all the time.

• 28:57Speaker 01

I kill my phone like twice a day.

• 28:59Nilay Patel?

But I will say, so here, but here's my point, and it's entirely possible the iPhone does it too, right? It's like, shared architecture.

• 29:05Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:05Nilay Patel?

But I think they aggressively manage the performance of the CPU to maintain that battery life. So I think they're constantly ramping the CPU as low as it can go.

• 29:16Speaker 03

Which is why it takes, it's like, it's like resting now, and then when you boot it, it's like, up, gotta come up now.

• 29:21Nilay Patel?

I actually think, like, this is an OLED screen. I took a macro photo of this thing. I should have just put this on the side. I don't know, I didn't. I took a macro photo of the screen, because Apple won't confirm if it's OLED or not. It's definitely a Pentile OLED screen.

• 29:32Speaker 03

  Ooh.

• 29:32Nilay Patel?

But it's RGB, so it's got the blue stripe and the red, and, you know what I mean?

• 29:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:36Nilay Patel?

  I'll send it to you.

• 29:37Speaker 02

No, that's fine. I just, it's shocking to me that you could see something Pentile and not, like,

• 29:42Nilay Patel?

  It looks good.

• 29:43Speaker 02

Have a blood vessel pop in your brain.

• 29:44Nilay Patel?

S6 has a Pentile screen too, right? Or an OLED Pentile?

• 29:46Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 29:47Nilay Patel?

  Who cares?

• 29:48Speaker 02

Exactly. If it's good, it doesn't matter.

• 29:49Nilay Patel?

The pixel density has gotten good now. But even OLED screens, so you can usually just leave an OLED screen, like, you can take the, like, they're like, power, they have all these power features.

• 30:01Speaker 02

Yeah, like, the black doesn't take up as much power.

• 30:03Nilay Patel?

Right, so you can like, run like, 3 pixels, because the screen is effectively off.

• 30:07Speaker 02

  Right.

• 30:07Nilay Patel?

  Right?

• 30:08Speaker 02

Which is what, which is what a bunch of Android Wear watches do.

• 30:11Nilay Patel?

Right, so that's, the G-Watch does that?

• 30:12Speaker 02

Yeah, so this is, um, let me just turn it, uh- Yeah, so that's like the default mode.

• 30:18Nilay Patel?

Right, so that's just off and it's just lighting up some of the pixels, right? So, and the black ticks and the power. So I think it is fascinating that Apple went all the way off.

• 30:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 30:29Nilay Patel?

Like, it's, that is how like-

• 30:31Speaker 01

  Yeah, I agree.

• 30:32Nilay Patel?

-crazy they are for battery life on this thing, where all sorts of other devices with the same kind of screen keep some things lit up because they know it's important. And Apple goes all the way off, just for that extra little like half a percent.

• 30:43Speaker 03

Yeah, and it's kinda like when you put your iPhone in your pocket.

• 30:46Speaker 02

Well, I think it's more than half a percent.

• 30:47Speaker 03

But, um, I think it'll be-

• 30:50Nilay Patel?

Whatever, you know what I mean?

• 30:50Speaker 02

No, like on the Moto 360, like especially the first iteration of it, like if you, if you leave that ambient screen on, you're hosed.

• 30:57Nilay Patel?

Isn't the Moto 360 an LCD?

• 30:59Speaker 02

  Uh, maybe.

• 31:00Nilay Patel?

I think the Moto 360 is an LCD.

• 31:01Speaker 02

  Oh, there you go.

• 31:02Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 31:03Speaker 03

I think we should come back in exactly a year from now and do another Vergecast on the Apple Watch because-

• 31:09Speaker 02

No, we're never talking about the Apple Watch again.

• 31:10Speaker 03

  I mean, I, I think, I think, no, I think-

• 31:13Nilay Patel?

Confirmed, Moto 360 is an LCD.

• 31:15Speaker 01

We need to come back from the dead to talk about the Apple Watch.

• 31:18Speaker 03

I think, I think, remember like iPhone 2G and then iPhone 3G, like, that is leaps, the 3G is leaps and bounds better than the original iPhone.

• 31:29Speaker 02

No, but so this is the problem with evaluating the, the Apple Watch right now is-

• 31:33Nilay Patel?

Wait, the 3G was, had only two differences from the original iPhone.

• 31:37Speaker 03

It had 3G, it had a redesigned body, it was way faster.

• 31:40Nilay Patel?

Yeah, but that was, the only one that mattered, it wasn't way faster, the 3GS was way faster. The only difference, really-

• 31:47Speaker 02

The 3G and the App Store.

• 31:49Speaker 03

  App Store?

• 31:50Nilay Patel?

Came to the first iPhone 2. The only, the only-

• 31:52Speaker 02

  That's why, that's why, nevermind.

• 31:54Nilay Patel?

Yeah, but I was gonna say the two differences, but the App Store came to the first iPhone 2. The only real difference of the 3G was the radio.

• 31:59Speaker 03

I just think they're gonna iterate on this thing significantly and Apple has a very high tenden- tendency to like make its old products feel obsolete so fast. Like Dieter, your review of the new MacBook, which we should talk about. It, it makes the, it makes the current air feel old and clunky. Like, that's nuts, because I think this thing is super thin and awesome. Granted, I'm looking at the sport right now on my screen. It's kind of chunky. Like, it's not as thin as they can probably make it. And I guarantee you, the next one is gonna be thin and awesome. And now I'm kind of going back on the yearly cycle thing, cuz they probably will, probably will release one next year.

• 32:39Nilay Patel?

There's no chance they don't update this thing right away.

• 32:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:42Nilay Patel?

They have to. Like, just the, they've got it out in the market, they're gonna figure out what people are gonna do with it. They're gonna launch their real app platform instead of this goofy, run-on-your-phone, remote-control thing.

• 32:54Speaker 03

So, so apps are coming to the, like, the device will process apps eventually, right?

• 32:58Nilay Patel?

Right, and it does, it does for like, Apple stuff.

• 33:00Speaker 03

  Right.

• 33:00Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 33:01Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 33:02Nilay Patel?

I mean, the app thing right now is like...

• 33:05Speaker 03

  Busted.

• 33:05Nilay Patel?

  It's real bad.

• 33:06Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 33:07Nilay Patel?

And I think they know it. I, I, I don't think that they have any illusions about how slow the, the third-party apps are.

• 33:12Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 33:12Nilay Patel?

Right, I mean, I, the apps need to do far less than they're trying to do right now, but do that way faster. So like, calling an Uber from your wrist is a great idea.

• 33:23Speaker 03

It should take two seconds. You should go like this, tap Uber, wait for it to load, and tap and...

• 33:28Nilay Patel?

Well, so here's the big problem with Uber, that I, I finally got it to load yesterday. So Uber takes, Uber is like...

• 33:34Speaker 01

But was that an online thing on their part?

• 33:37Nilay Patel?

  What?

• 33:37Speaker 01

Like, was there, was there a software thing?

• 33:39Nilay Patel?

No, no, no, literally the whole time with Uber.

• 33:40Speaker 01

I mean, I stopped trying, so, and it wasn't part of it.

• 33:42Nilay Patel?

But I finally got it to work, and then I realized, I couldn't pick the kind of Uber. So I couldn't go from regular Uber Black to Uber X. And I was in this building, and I couldn't pick whether I wanted the Uber on 39th Street or 40th Street. Which is like, an important thing to know about where your car is going to show up. So it literally is just a button that connects to your phone, and you have to like, get your phone.

• 34:03Speaker 03

So you can't like, drag the little pin at all? You can't do...

• 34:06Nilay Patel?

  None of that's there.

• 34:09Nilay Patel?

Yeah, so this is what I mean, like, the app story is like, they're all proof of concept. They're not there completely. And like, I think when they launch the real native apps, there will be a lot of iteration on like, what, what one powerful thing should my app do on your wrist? I think that's like the question that every developer needs to ask.

• 34:25Speaker 03

I have, I have one question and then we should really move on to the MacBook.

• 34:28Speaker 02

Should we? We can, we can.

• 34:29Speaker 03

You want to keep talking about the watch?

• 34:30Speaker 02

We can talk about the MacBook in like five minutes.

• 34:31Nilay Patel?

I want Stern's opinion on the watch.

• 34:33Speaker 03

I just have one question. Do you think we will see, um, Apple talk about development on the watch at WWDC?

• 34:41Nilay Patel?

  Yes. Oh my god, yes.

• 34:42Speaker 03

  Yeah?

• 34:42Nilay Patel?

  Without question.

• 34:43Speaker 03

So they're gonna like, talk about the new version of OS X, they're gonna talk about iOS X and then whatever the hell they call Apple Watch OS?

• 34:50Speaker 02

  Is it called Watch OS?

• 34:51Nilay Patel?

I think, I'm assuming they're gonna call it Watch OS.

• 34:53Speaker 03

Interesting. Nah, it's cool. It's something new, right?

• 34:56Nilay Patel?

Yeah. No, it'd be neat. I mean.

• 34:57Speaker 01

  Watch OS because it's great.

• 34:59Nilay Patel?

So here, I want to know what you think of this thing.

• 35:02Speaker 01

  W O S. Watch.

• 35:05Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, and then.

• 35:06Speaker 01

  We're in sync today, Dieter.

• 35:07Nilay Patel?

  Oh my god.

• 35:08Speaker 01

Feel it with him. I wish you had a, I wish you had an Apple Watch.

• 35:12Speaker 03

  So do I, actually.

• 35:13Nilay Patel?

Can you stop slowly backing away from the microphone?

• 35:16Speaker 01

  I hate this microphone.

• 35:19Nilay Patel?

Joanna's just like rolling away slowly. Wait, now you want to cuddle with it?

• 35:22Speaker 01

  It's a pillow.

• 35:25Nilay Patel?

Alright, Joanna, sum up, sum up the watch for us. Tell me, give me the real.

• 35:29Speaker 03

  TLDR. The watch.

• 35:30Nilay Patel?

  TLDR of the watch.

• 35:31Speaker 01

You're like no better than a TV anchor.

• 35:33Nilay Patel?

And I, you know I'm doing it on purpose.

• 35:34Speaker 03

  Wow, Stern, burn.

• 35:35Nilay Patel?

  So?

• 35:36Speaker 01

  You really are like.

• 35:37Nilay Patel?

  You like it?

• 35:38Speaker 01

You should just go work for Fox News.

• 35:39Nilay Patel?

  What's the best app?

• 35:41Speaker 02

  How, okay, actually.

• 35:42Nilay Patel?

  What's your favorite thing?

• 35:43Speaker 02

How are we dealing with notifications?

• 35:44Nilay Patel?

Do I need to use, do I need my iPhone for this? What hap- do I, do I need my iPhone for this?

• 35:49Speaker 01

  Not for everything.

• 35:50Nilay Patel?

  Not really?

• 35:50Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 35:51Nilay Patel?

What hap- do I need a data plan? I gotta ask.

• 35:53Speaker 01

Actually, I want to say that was to me one of the best things about the entire watch was going for a run without my iPhone.

• 35:58Nilay Patel?

  Mm-hmm.

• 35:59Speaker 01

I put, the process doesn't require to use iTunes, which is truly the worst thing on the earth.

• 36:04Speaker 02

  Wait, I, like.

• 36:05Speaker 01

  iTunes.

• 36:06Speaker 02

iTunes on the iPhone though, not like on your computer.

• 36:09Nilay Patel?

Well, no, you gotta get the music to the iPhone and then to the watch.

• 36:11Speaker 01

You don't have, right, but you still can use iTunes now without your computer, but I, I decided to use iTunes on the computer, which I haven't used in probably like two or three years. I don't know. It is terrible.

• 36:22Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 36:22Speaker 01

It is so, so, so painful. Why can you not drag something to the iPhone?

• 36:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:31Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 36:31Speaker 01

It's insane. You sound like you're biting your tongue.

• 36:34Speaker 02

I'm just real mad about iTunes.

• 36:35Speaker 01

  It's so.

• 36:36Nilay Patel?

Jimmy Iovine's gonna fix it, you guys.

• 36:38Speaker 01

He's not gonna fix iTunes. iTunes is just a terrible place.

• 36:42Speaker 03

Uh, I don't think it's, it'll be called iTunes. They're gonna, they'll probably kill iTunes.

• 36:46Speaker 02

  No.

• 36:46Speaker 03

That shit is like 10 years old.

• 36:48Speaker 01

  iTunes.

• 36:49Speaker 02

  That would be.

• 36:49Speaker 03

  They killed iPod Classic.

• 36:50Speaker 01

I'm gonna write my think piece for that right now.

• 36:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:52Speaker 03

They're gonna, they're gonna, they're gonna kill it.

• 36:54Speaker 01

Should you buy iTunes? You should never go into iTunes. You should never go there. And actually, I even bought music through Apple, which I haven't done in so long.

• 37:02Speaker 02

  What'd you buy?

• 37:03Speaker 01

I bought, I bought a Katy Perry song.

• 37:05Speaker 02

  Ah, that's good.

• 37:06Nilay Patel?

See, you bought the one Katy Perry song.

• 37:08Speaker 01

I bought a new Katy Perry song.

• 37:09Speaker 03

And you listened to it on repeat for 45 minutes.

• 37:11Speaker 01

I bought five Workout Jams on iTunes, is what I did. And then I synced it to my wa, I synced it to my phone, then I synced it to my watch. And that process was not good. But when I had it on there, and then I paired Bluetooth headset to the watch.

• 37:24Nilay Patel?

  Yep.

• 37:25Speaker 01

And I went for a great run. And then I ended up at Whole Foods and I bought some really hipster stuff. Like water with, with fruit in it.

• 37:33Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 37:34Speaker 01

  Six dollars.

• 37:35Speaker 02

  And you double clicked.

• 37:35Speaker 03

Did you Apple pay for it?

• 37:36Speaker 01

And then I Apple paid for it.

• 37:37Speaker 03

Wow, that's actually a pretty cool experience.

• 37:39Speaker 01

And then I ran home. And it was really cool.

• 37:40Speaker 03

  That is a cool experience.

• 37:42Speaker 01

And I didn't have those notifications, but that's why it was really great.

• 37:45Speaker 03

So when you leave the phone at home, what happens?

• 37:49Speaker 01

  Your phone is at home.

• 37:51Speaker 03

Thank you, Joanna. What happens to the watch when your phone is at home?

• 37:57Speaker 01

Um, my phone was at home in my apartment. Um, and then the watch just says it's not connected to the phone.

• 38:04Speaker 03

  And you could still.

• 38:04Speaker 01

Connected, you get a little like icon.

• 38:07Nilay Patel?

  It's like a red box.

• 38:08Speaker 03

  You, you.

• 38:08Speaker 01

That says like, yeah, it's a little red box with an X, like a line.

• 38:11Speaker 03

You, it's using the storage of the, of the device itself.

• 38:15Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it's like a four gig limit.

• 38:17Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 38:17Speaker 01

Which is fine for working out, like music or whatever.

• 38:20Speaker 03

So then hypothetically, because I am invested in Spotify, so.

• 38:24Speaker 01

Yes, I, I mentioned this in the review. Unlikely that there's, yeah, I mean, unlikely you're gonna have that, that, the ability to have that. I mean.

• 38:33Speaker 02

No, once they allow native apps, they'll figure something out.

• 38:35Speaker 01

Well, if they allowed native apps that you could cache your music, like you could on your phone, yeah.

• 38:39Speaker 03

  Right, but they're not there.

• 38:40Speaker 01

  Have that now. Yeah.

• 38:41Speaker 03

Damn. Okay. Well, run without music then, I guess, is like, right?

• 38:45Speaker 01

Or use iTunes and want to kill yourself.

• 38:47Speaker 03

Well, I probably won't do that. I mean, because right now, right now, when I run, I carry my phone to use Nike Plus. And I probably will stop using Nike Plus and just use whatever Apple has. Does that, does the health, um, stuff sync from the watch to the phone?

• 38:59Speaker 01

  Really fast, really fast, too.

• 39:00Speaker 03

  Cool.

• 39:01Speaker 01

I liked, I think they did a really, really good job on, on the health stuff. I think it has so much more potential, but it was, it was.

• 39:08Nilay Patel?

But that's the whole story. The whole story of this watch is everything is half finished.

• 39:13Speaker 02

No, but the, the heart rate monitor, was it you that said that it was in like five minutes? It was you. It was in five, five heartbeats of the, the chest strap?

• 39:19Speaker 01

  Yeah, I said that.

• 39:20Speaker 02

You said that. That's really impressive.

• 39:22Speaker 01

  It's really impressive.

• 39:22Speaker 02

Because heart rate monitors on, on Android Wear are just like, no.

• 39:27Speaker 01

Yeah, but part of that's you have to be wearing the sport band.

• 39:29Speaker 02

Oh, you gotta get it really tight.

• 39:31Speaker 01

On this band, it does not work. It's like a very tight fit with the heart, with the sport band.

• 39:36Nilay Patel?

Well, maybe that's why I was wearing the sport band.

• 39:39Speaker 01

I just am thinking about everything I did over the last week and it isn't.

• 39:42Nilay Patel?

Well, it's a lot of things. I mean, I will say this, and I don't mean this as, as much, I used to say it and I meant it kind of as a burn, but now I don't think it's a burn. I think it's, it just speaks to how sprawling the product is. It is the most Samsung, Apple product ever. It does everything. And because it's Apple, it's not like, you know, you get a Galaxy phone and it's like, S movies. And you're like, well, I'm not gonna use that ever. Right? Like, that's dumb.

• 40:08Speaker 01

I totally agree in that, like, I try to make it into something like to personalize it to myself. And I think that might be one of the reasons I keep saying this is the most personal product. It's like, you've got to figure out what it does for you, but I want Apple's help in that.

• 40:20Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 40:20Speaker 01

I want Apple's help to be able to set this up to do what I want and not have to see a million, I mean, yes, you can delete all these little apps, but the glance, you know, you can take off the glances too. But it's a lot of customization that has to happen.

• 40:32Speaker 02

How much time did you spend, how much time did you guys spend doing all the little like toggle switches to turn notifications off and get rid of apps? Like, Neil, you didn't write about the app at all.

• 40:42Nilay Patel?

No, I couldn't. There's too much. It'd be 10,000 words if I wrote about the app. Nobody wrote about the app.

• 40:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:47Nilay Patel?

I didn't see one person write about the iPhone app, which is a equally sprawling experience.

• 40:53Speaker 02

  Right.

• 40:54Speaker 01

I mean, the big thing for me is like VIP isn't deep enough. Like that feature doesn't go deep enough.

• 41:00Speaker 02

Oh, that's interesting. Oh, it is VIP on the iPhone. You can set contacts via VIP so their notifications come through.

• 41:07Speaker 01

  Right.

• 41:07Speaker 02

You can like say, I want VIP notifications, but not the other ones from mail.

• 41:11Speaker 03

Oh, I did not know that.

• 41:13Speaker 01

Do you know anything about Apple?

• 41:14Speaker 02

I don't have a watch. Android does this. Lollipop has got.

• 41:17Speaker 01

No, you have this. They've had it since like iOS five or something.

• 41:20Nilay Patel?

  iOS five, bro.

• 41:22Speaker 03

Is this, is that, is that a favorites thing?

• 41:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's in email.

• 41:25Speaker 02

  No.

• 41:25Speaker 03

  Oh, it's in email.

• 41:26Nilay Patel?

The reason that these two are excitedly talking about it is they've both made the terrible mistake of using iOS Mail.

• 41:32Speaker 02

  No, I'd never do that.

• 41:33Speaker 01

  I have to use it.

• 41:35Speaker 02

  No, what?

• 41:36Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, because you have Exchange.

• 41:37Speaker 01

Yeah. What do you guys use?

• 41:40Speaker 03

  I use Gmail.

• 41:40Speaker 02

Gmail or Outlook. Why don't you use Outlook?

• 41:43Speaker 01

I did use Outlook for a while and then.

• 41:47Speaker 02

Outlook is great, especially with Exchange.

• 41:49Speaker 01

Outlook was taking longer to hit my email, my work email. First it was really fast and then for some reason it got slowed down. But yes, I do have Outlook still on my front page here, everybody, so.

Sam, you've got too many apps on your phones and tablets. Just get the one, and then go places. You also get free flight notifications, which Jeter tells me is a thing.

You get support for Pebble and Android Wear, and presumably another platform. So you'll always be up to date. To get started, go to TripCase.com/vergecast to start up. If you're not convinced, here is another list of things that I will read. TripCase is a place where trips live. You get Uber integration. You get free flight alerts. TripCase will automatically alert you if any changes to your trip, like a delay or gate change. You get emails everywhere. Tablet, phone, watch, so many beeps about trips. You can share your trip with coworkers or loved ones, or you can hide them from loved ones and share them with other loved ones. Think about what I'm saying. You can remember this place. If you ate at a restaurant, you want to save it. You can check weather. You can get seat maps.

• 45:22Nilay Patel?

  We out of the zone?

• 45:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:25Nilay Patel?

Highway to the Are we back? Danger zone. Are we back in the apple zone?

• 45:30Speaker 03

I think we're back in the apple zone.

• 45:31Nilay Patel?

John's just, John's just not talking to me.

• 45:34Speaker 02

Yeah, he's giving up on us.

• 45:35Speaker 03

  Okay, so Dieter.

• 45:37Nilay Patel?

Wait, I have to say, Sam, I have a question for you. And Joanna's still just replying to tweets.

• 45:42Speaker 01

  No, I'm doing email now.

• 45:43Nilay Patel?

Okay, I would like, I'm gonna say, you can't, no more emails.

• 45:45Speaker 01

  Why?

• 45:46Nilay Patel?

  Because you're on a show.

• 45:47Speaker 01

But guys, the SoulCycle app is finally out.

• 45:50Speaker 03

Jake tweeted about this like six hours ago.

• 45:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:52Nilay Patel?

Were you emailing your dark net social network?

• 45:55Speaker 03

  Wait, Neil, what's your question?

• 45:57Speaker 01

  I'm emailing with SoulCycle.

• 45:57Nilay Patel?

Okay, I have two questions for you. One, July, well, it's not more of a question, it's more of a statement. I'm taking control of this Vergecast. You have been trying to mutiny me this whole time. I know what you're doing.

• 46:07Speaker 01

  Can we get any snacks?

• 46:08Nilay Patel?

There were snacks before, we're just not allowed to eat on the camera. And you, this isn't even a mutiny, this is just like, it's like a lazy rebellion.

• 46:15Speaker 01

  I'm really hungry, I want a snack.

• 46:17Nilay Patel?

Why did we bring you on the show?

• 46:18Speaker 01

I don't know, I don't know why you asked me back the last time, I was terrible on this show.

• 46:22Nilay Patel?

  I think you're great.

• 46:24Speaker 01

You do, you're the only person.

• 46:25Speaker 02

That's not true, we all, everybody thinks you're great.

• 46:27Speaker 01

  Nobody thinks you're great.

• 46:28Nilay Patel?

  Dieter's fine, Dieter.

• 46:31Speaker 02

  I mean, I don't think anybody's great, so.

• 46:34Speaker 01

That's what I love about you.

• 46:38Nilay Patel?

I don't think anyone's great, the Dieter Bones story.

• 46:40Speaker 01

Yeah, that's what I've always loved about Dieter.

• 46:43Nilay Patel?

  It's fine, it's a six.

• 46:47Nilay Patel?

I have to say, no, I gave the thing a seven.

• 46:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:51Nilay Patel?

I think, again, I think if we'd gotten the cheaper one, that score might have been different. But I got a lot of heat for giving it a seven.

• 46:57Speaker 02

  A lot of heat.

• 46:57Nilay Patel?

Because on a one to 10 scale, what you're supposed to say is a world of no sevens.

• 47:01Speaker 01

  I don't miss that world.

• 47:03Nilay Patel?

You know what's a hundred point scale? This scale is your idea.

• 47:06Speaker 01

  I know.

• 47:07Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm pretty angry, like, I got, I got in a huge fight over 8.4 versus 8.5 today.

• 47:12Nilay Patel?

  That's ridiculous.

• 47:13Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 47:14Speaker 01

Didn't, I think I wanted to do a hundred point scale.

• 47:17Speaker 02

We should just do a 10 point scale.

• 47:18Speaker 01

  And Josh said no.

• 47:19Speaker 02

We should not be talking about this on the Vergecast.

• 47:21Nilay Patel?

No, are you kidding, this is like red meat for the Vergecast crowd. Here's what I know, here's, here's the two things I know. One, hundred point scale as a, as a founding decision.

• 47:29Speaker 02

Let's make a thousand point scale.

• 47:31Speaker 01

I think I wanted to do Wired versus Tired, but everyone said no.

• 47:34Speaker 02

Can we do a hexadecimal scale?

• 47:37Nilay Patel?

  Yes, Wired versus Tired, right?

• 47:39Speaker 01

I think I wanted to do that and everyone said no.

• 47:42Nilay Patel?

  Or hot or not.

• 47:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:43Nilay Patel?

  What's, what's the Vice one?

• 47:46Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 47:46Nilay Patel?

  It's like drunk versus stoned.

• 47:50Speaker 01

That would have been a good one.

• 47:51Nilay Patel?

  Drunk for sober.

• 47:53Speaker 03

  B for bust.

• 47:53Nilay Patel?

Can we start with T for bust?

• 47:55Speaker 02

I'm serious. We should, we should use a hexadecimal scale. So it could be zero through nine and then A, A, B, C, D, E, F. I give, I give this thing a C.

• 48:03Nilay Patel?

Okay. Dieter, Dieter's in the bone zone.

• 48:05Speaker 01

  Ah, Dieter.

• 48:06Nilay Patel?

Dieter went to the bone zone.

• 48:08Speaker 02

  Never coming back.

• 48:10Nilay Patel?

No, here's what I know. The 100 point scale, murderous decision from our past.

• 48:14Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 48:15Nilay Patel?

  Causes murderous rage.

• 48:16Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 48:16Nilay Patel?

Uh, when we can't change it now. And, uh, David Pierce? I'm gonna murder him for giving all these smartwatches eights.

• 48:25Nilay Patel?

Just murder him. I mean, talk about great inflation. If David Pierce was like my high school English teacher.

• 48:32Speaker 01

  He agreed on that.

• 48:32Nilay Patel?

Like, I would have gone to Harvard. Like, that's all I'm saying. Like, without question. What are you doing, Pierce? Moto360 is like, this changed my life.

• 48:41Speaker 01

Oh, well, like, that was also the problem, right? Cause when you do a review, it's very set in time.

• 48:46Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 48:47Speaker 01

And so the grading doesn't change.

• 48:50Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 48:50Speaker 01

  Time changes.

• 48:52Nilay Patel?

  Time changes a lot.

• 48:53Speaker 01

That's what the watch tells me.

• 48:54Nilay Patel?

Did you just start singing, did you just make up a little beat there?

• 48:57Speaker 01

And so the Moto360, as bad of a review as I gave it, was a, was a breakthrough product, cause it was this first smartwatch that people would consider wearing.

• 49:07Nilay Patel?

  Right. And it was 249.

• 49:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:09Nilay Patel?

And it actually came with a nicer charging stand than the Apple Watch.

• 49:13Speaker 01

And I knocked the battery life, but it's gotten better.

• 49:15Nilay Patel?

Yeah. I think people are saying it's two days now.

• 49:17Speaker 01

That's crazy. When I had it, I couldn't get it for a full day and that's why I got smashed.

• 49:21Speaker 02

Never lasts two days for me.

• 49:23Nilay Patel?

I got a lot of fanboys in my tweets.

• 49:25Speaker 02

  Yeah, well.

• 49:25Speaker 01

But I'm, I stand by that review and I'm actually so happy, like, I went back and read it and I said how crazy that thing looked on my wrist.

• 49:32Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 49:33Speaker 01

And it still looks massive on my wrist. And there's no way that product was ever designed for everybody.

• 49:39Nilay Patel?

I spent a day wearing both of them.

• 49:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:41Nilay Patel?

So you know, like, sometimes you have, when you're reviewing, you have two smartphones, you feel terrible. Two smartwatches, the worst.

• 49:47Speaker 01

Um, you should go to a workout class with five bands on.

• 49:50Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 49:51Speaker 01

  And a heart rate monitor.

• 49:52Nilay Patel?

  Hmm.

• 49:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:53Nilay Patel?

I don't know if I want to do that.

• 49:54Speaker 01

Yeah. You should also go to two workout classes in a day.

• 49:59Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 49:59Speaker 01

Because you need to review something.

• 50:01Nilay Patel?

  Yeah. You're dedicated.

• 50:02Speaker 01

  I was a dedicated.

• 50:03Nilay Patel?

At this point, mostly what I do is drink beer and talk on this show.

• 50:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:06Nilay Patel?

That's, that's the whole of being the editor in chief of The Verge.

• 50:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:08Nilay Patel?

  Dieter is mostly the work.

• 50:09Speaker 01

I cannot believe actually how much I worked out in the last week for that piece. Yeah.

• 50:13Nilay Patel?

Okay, we should, we should. Oh, Android Wear, the last point, you did a story today.

• 50:17Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 50:18Nilay Patel?

Android Wear potentially coming to iOS.

• 50:19Speaker 02

Right, so there's been rumors and whatever, but Google is working on it. They are very close to being done. And then we'll see if Apple accepts it.

• 50:28Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 50:28Speaker 02

It will support Google Now on iOS and notifications and voice somehow, voice search.

• 50:36Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 50:36Speaker 02

And you can also act on Gmail's.

• 50:38Nilay Patel?

  I think.

• 50:39Speaker 01

So that was actually something I didn't get to write about, but it was a thought in my head. And I'm sure it was kind of in your piece a little bit, is talking about like the lack of Google services that you can get right now on here, even though you can get on the watch. That even though you can get the notifications, right, from Gmail or inbox or whatever. It just, it doesn't feel like even there's the potential for Google to do something deeper here as it stands.

• 51:03Nilay Patel?

You know what I would take? And I, I, I thought about this Google piece a lot. I don't care for all the notifications. Like, you've got to get the watch, you've got to get the phone, you've got to open the app, you've got to curate your notifications. There's two different ways to curate notifications. There's like the new way where you can, with updated apps, you can mirror your phone. Or you can customize each app. Or with the old apps that aren't updated, you can just turn them on and off, which is crazy. I would take a smartwatch that was basically an analog watch with a, with a display behind the hands.

• 51:34Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 51:34Nilay Patel?

And all it did was light up and show me Google Now cards. Right, so it just like, just did contextual information whenever it thought I might want it.

• 51:42Speaker 02

Isn't that what Android Wear is?

• 51:43Nilay Patel?

No, no, no, it's still like, the 360 is a big ass screen, the G Watch R is a big ass screen.

• 51:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:48Nilay Patel?

I'm saying it's like basically a, a regular watch, but it has some ability to show you Now cards.

• 51:54Speaker 02

I will say that when I, now that I'm bouncing back between.

• 51:57Nilay Patel?

Every time you look at your wrist, it just shows you some important piece of information.

• 52:00Speaker 02

Yeah, you've need, you really need to commit to Google Now for it to be useful. Like, the Google Now cards that I'm getting in Android Wear right now are kind of pointless. Like, they're no good, because I've been bouncing between iPhone and Android a bunch lately.

• 52:10Speaker 01

So you haven't been using it as much.

• 52:11Speaker 02

And so Google Now just like, doesn't know me anymore. It like, forgot who I am.

• 52:14Nilay Patel?

  You drifted.

• 52:15Speaker 02

  It's great.

• 52:16Nilay Patel?

That's cool. You were just a deer. You had that trip to the lake in high school.

• 52:21Speaker 03

  Jeez, and the Mustang.

• 52:23Nilay Patel?

Yeah, and the stang, the top down.

• 52:25Speaker 03

  Mustang.

• 52:25Nilay Patel?

Yeah, you guys were listening to that one Katy Perry song, Joanna Downey.

• 52:30Speaker 01

  It's really good.

• 52:31Speaker 03

  Good song.

• 52:31Speaker 01

  Really good song.

• 52:32Speaker 03

  Jeez.

• 52:33Speaker 02

Uh, but, uh, who, uh, wait.

• 52:35Speaker 01

I can play it on here. Oh, I can't play it on here.

• 52:37Speaker 02

You can't play a little tiny little speaker?

• 52:39Nilay Patel?

No, it, it, it, it starts playing on your iPhone.

• 52:42Speaker 02

  Oh, okay.

• 52:42Speaker 03

But you could take calls with it.

• 52:45Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 52:45Speaker 03

  You can't listen to it.

• 52:46Nilay Patel?

And they sound terrible. Oh, another rando moment on morning television today. The, God. Okay, so first I went on CNBC.

• 52:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 52:55Nilay Patel?

And I was like, it has a button and a knob, which is like my little joke, right? Like, what piece of technology do you have in your life that has a knob? And the CNBC guy-

• 53:02Speaker 01

I lied, it wasn't Katy Perry, it was Carly Rae Jepsen.

• 53:05Speaker 03

  Oh, so different.

• 53:06Nilay Patel?

Do you really like her? Did you hear the Magic Dales matchup?

• 53:10Speaker 03

  I see it, Neelai.

• 53:12Nilay Patel?

  Huh?

• 53:12Speaker 03

I see what you did there.

• 53:13Nilay Patel?

  What?

• 53:14Speaker 03

  Do you really like her?

• 53:15Nilay Patel?

It wasn't, I didn't, it wasn't like you had to see it.

• 53:17Speaker 03

  No, I, I-

• 53:18Nilay Patel?

It happened way out in the open, Sammy.

• 53:21Nilay Patel?

All right, now we're gonna get sued.

• 53:23Speaker 03

  Yeah, there we go.

• 53:23Nilay Patel?

Now Carly Rae Jepsen's gonna sue us.

• 53:26Speaker 01

So, yeah, you can only control it this way.

• 53:28Speaker 03

  Oh, that's really loud.

• 53:29Speaker 02

  So, okay, but-

• 53:30Nilay Patel?

So, what you, what you don't see-

• 53:31Speaker 02

If you put your watch down and then you bring it back up, how do you control the music?

• 53:34Nilay Patel?

We can't do this. We're killing, John. I want you to know this.

• 53:37Speaker 02

How do you control the music?

• 53:38Nilay Patel?

  He's dying.

• 53:39Speaker 01

But can you really hear that that well?

• 53:40Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 53:41Speaker 02

If you put your watch down-

• 53:43Nilay Patel?

Did you just wanna dance by yourself?

• 53:44Speaker 02

And then you put it back up, it goes back to the watch face, right?

• 53:46Speaker 01

  I wanna dance with somebody.

• 53:49Speaker 02

  You wanna feel the heat?

• 53:50Speaker 01

  With somebody.

• 53:58Nilay Patel?

He doesn't know what song we're talking about. There you go. Hype check Whitney.

• 54:03Speaker 03

I've been to many bar mitzvahs in my time.

• 54:06Nilay Patel?

  Hype check Whitney.

• 54:06Speaker 03

  Always a ten, she's phenomenal.

• 54:10Speaker 03

When, whenever, it's like, it's like-

• 54:12Speaker 01

  That's my karaoke song.

• 54:13Speaker 03

3:40 in the morning in the East Village, that song comes on, the place gets lit up.

• 54:17Speaker 01

Yeah, cuz it's a great karaoke and like party song.

• 54:20Speaker 03

  It's a feeling good song.

• 54:20Speaker 01

  It really is.

• 54:21Nilay Patel?

I just wanna point out Sam's life, as far as I can tell, occurs at 3:40 in the morning in the East Village and bar mitzvahs. That's all of the relevant cultural knowledge that Sam-

• 54:30Speaker 01

Sam, you're gonna make a Jewish girl so happy one day.

• 54:32Speaker 03

  I hope so, Joanna.

• 54:33Nilay Patel?

  I'm sorry.

• 54:34Speaker 03

When am I gonna get married?

• 54:36Nilay Patel?

When are you gonna get married?

• 54:38Speaker 03

Are you dad now? It's mom and dad.

• 54:42Speaker 02

How am I not, I should be like half Indian then, right?

• 54:45Nilay Patel?

  Yes.

• 54:45Speaker 02

I'm kinda dark, I'll take it.

• 54:46Nilay Patel?

  No, there's a-

• 54:47Speaker 01

You wanna have a half Indian baby. We'll talk about this later.

• 54:50Nilay Patel?

  Wow.

• 54:50Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 54:51Nilay Patel?

I'm in, you know, that's my life.

• 54:53Speaker 02

Cool, he could be my dad.

• 54:53Nilay Patel?

  That's coming at me.

• 54:54Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 54:54Nilay Patel?

Half Indian baby flying, flying through the danger zone.

• 54:58Speaker 01

At Nilay's wedding, he had the cutest little cousin there that was half Indian.

• 55:02Speaker 02

  Oh yeah.

• 55:03Speaker 01

And I ran around chasing her the whole night.

• 55:05Nilay Patel?

Until, until my cousin came up to me and said, can your friend stop chasing my baby?

• 55:13Speaker 01

  She was so cute.

• 55:14Nilay Patel?

  She's really cute.

• 55:15Speaker 01

She did not wanna be my friend.

• 55:17Nilay Patel?

  You were chasing her.

• 55:19Speaker 02

  Come here, little child.

• 55:20Nilay Patel?

Shannon's like, I'm gonna take her home. And my cousin is like, I think she means it.

• 55:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:28Speaker 02

  So MacBook.

• 55:29Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 55:30Nilay Patel?

John, I'm so sorry. No, John, this is a great show. We're gonna, we're gonna really, we're gonna really look back on this one.

• 55:35Speaker 01

Peter was asking that when I raised my-

• 55:36Nilay Patel?

  The day John quit.

• 55:37Speaker 02

So, it's back to your watch face now, right?

• 55:39Speaker 01

  No.

• 55:40Speaker 02

  What? It stays on music?

• 55:41Speaker 01

  It's on music right now.

• 55:42Speaker 02

Okay, cuz Juggler wrote that like, the default is that it goes back to the watch face.

• 55:46Speaker 01

  Sometimes.

• 55:47Speaker 02

But not other times. So how do you know what does or doesn't go back to the watch face?

• 55:50Speaker 01

Usually it's after a notification, it goes to the watch, back to the watch face. But you know what? Sometimes with exercise or workout, I think I've been calling it the wrong thing the whole time.

• 55:58Speaker 02

There's two of them. There's workout and then there's activity.

• 56:01Speaker 01

Yeah, I know, but I think I've been calling workout, exercise, the exercise app.

• 56:04Speaker 02

  Is there an exercise app?

• 56:06Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, there's two apps.

• 56:06Speaker 01

This is really kind of very confusing.

• 56:09Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 56:09Nilay Patel?

There's the activity with the circles.

• 56:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:11Nilay Patel?

And then there's workout, which is where you tell it you're like-

• 56:14Speaker 02

  But there's no exercise.

• 56:15Nilay Patel?

  No.

• 56:15Speaker 01

  But there's-

• 56:15Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 56:16Speaker 01

But there's no workout app on the iPhone. There's only activity on the iPhone.

• 56:21Speaker 02

  Huh.

• 56:21Speaker 01

So, when you get the watch and you set it up, you get a new app called Activity.

• 56:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:25Speaker 01

And that's where all, you can view all the stuff. But you, but they also put workout in activity. But on the watch, there's workout and activity.

• 56:32Nilay Patel?

Can I just zoom all the way out of this for a second? Has he, have, has this all just gotten too complicated?

• 56:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:39Nilay Patel?

Are these, is the phone, like I was thinking about-

• 56:41Speaker 02

  The phone?

• 56:42Nilay Patel?

Yeah, like I was thinking about my old Windows PC, which is like, it was just, like, I think the reason phones are popular is cuz those just got so complicated, that it was like an easy reset. Like now you strip it away and it's super simple. And even my Mac is like, every time I get a new Mac, I find myself just installing stuff forever. Right? Like when like, you know, Alfred and millions of menu bars and every piece of Google software. And it's like this, this endless, I need all this stuff to make it work. And I didn't feel that way about my phone. And now like the watch installs two apps that you need to use to configure the watch. And it's like, is this, I just like it.

• 57:19Speaker 02

Wait, the watch installs two apps?

• 57:20Nilay Patel?

Yeah, it's the Apple Watch app.

• 57:22Speaker 02

No, I got the Apple Watch app.

• 57:23Speaker 01

Yeah, right. You're right. Only the activity app.

• 57:25Nilay Patel?

Now it's there. So there's the Apple Watch app.

• 57:27Speaker 02

Why do I, why did they force this Apple Watch app on me in the first place?

• 57:30Nilay Patel?

  I don't know.

• 57:30Speaker 02

  It makes me pretty unhappy.

• 57:31Nilay Patel?

  Well, because it can.

• 57:32Speaker 01

  That's marketing.

• 57:33Nilay Patel?

Right. But I'm just saying, just like.

• 57:35Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 57:36Speaker 01

And by the way, you can't delete activity.

• 57:39Speaker 03

  I think it is.

• 57:39Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 57:39Speaker 03

I mean, we spent an hour talking about what this thing can do in its first iteration.

• 57:44Nilay Patel?

No, I don't mean that. I didn't mean to watch. I just meant like.

• 57:47Speaker 03

  What?

• 57:47Nilay Patel?

Have we just gotten to a point, I think phones used to be fun because they were like interestingly simple. And if you wanted to get deep into it.

• 57:53Speaker 03

  Well, phones or smartphones.

• 57:54Nilay Patel?

Smartphones. Like this smartphone moment was like, Apple would add one feature at a time. And if you were into the game, you'd get an Android phone and like go crazy. Or you would jailbreak your iPhone and go crazy. But there was like an inherent wonderful simplicity.

• 58:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, that is not here.

• 58:09Nilay Patel?

And now the phone's like a PC. And it's like, everything's connecting to this phone.

• 58:12Speaker 03

You can do everything on these things now.

• 58:13Speaker 02

Actually, that never existed except for like a couple of years with the iPhone.

• 58:17Speaker 01

  Right.

• 58:17Speaker 02

  Otherwise, it's always been.

• 58:18Speaker 03

It was like iOS two, three and four felt like that.

• 58:21Nilay Patel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 58:21Speaker 02

  You're like.

• 58:23Speaker 01

But I, I, I think with the watch, um, the great thing about the iPhone is that it can be so simple to people. Right? It is so simple to my mom and she loves it. And she could have an Android phone too. You can very easily make it what you want it to be.

• 58:37Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 58:37Speaker 01

A phone, email, iMessage. That's what my mom does on her phone.

• 58:41Nilay Patel?

So many people say I never use any apps on my phone.

• 58:43Speaker 01

Yeah, my mom doesn't use it. I mean, she does play scramble with friends.

• 58:45Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 58:46Speaker 01

She loves it. She loves scramble with friends. But with the watch, there's so much going on. It's, and they're, they don't make it very easy right now to make it what you want it to be. And I think I really do wonder what the return rates will be on these.

• 58:59Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 59:00Speaker 01

People get them. Yes, at first it's complicated to use, but there's still so much going on when you learn how to use it. I mean, to me, that's the big, like, for normal people, for the average consumer who isn't gonna buy this just to be the gadget person, but heard that it's gonna help them with something.

• 59:16Nilay Patel?

What they're gonna hear is it's gonna help you be, pay more attention, look at your phone less.

• 59:20Speaker 01

  Right.

• 59:20Nilay Patel?

And I think looking at your watch is worse than looking at a phone.

• 59:23Speaker 01

Or they've heard, you know, it's a good activity tracker, it can, it can, you know, do some other things for you, and then they get all these notifications and they don't want them.

• 59:33Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 59:34Speaker 02

Yeah, my mom asked me, should I get an Apple Watch or a Fitbit?

• 59:37Speaker 01

  Right, that's the big thing.

• 59:38Speaker 02

Ah, do, get a Fitbit, if it's not in your drawer in three months, we can talk.

• 59:43Speaker 01

That's a good, that's what I kind of said too, in my piece, like, people should try and see if that's for them. There's a lot of reasons this is better than a Fitbit, though, and especially for $350, when you're looking at the Fitbits that are $250.

• 59:54Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 59:55Speaker 01

I would say go buy this for the extra $100, because you'll wanna wear it. The Fitbit surge is super ugly.

• 1:00:01Nilay Patel?

Oh, yeah, it's terrible. No, I meant like cheap one.

• 1:00:03Speaker 02

Or a Javon up, actually, is what I meant.

• 1:00:04Speaker 01

And the screen is terrible, right? And people want, like, that wouldn't probably be for your mom, you know, that would be for someone who wants to work out more. But, yeah, I mean, I just think-

• 1:00:13Nilay Patel?

What are you saying about my mom?

• 1:00:14Speaker 01

I don't know, she's super fit and exercising.

• 1:00:17Nilay Patel?

Guys, dark place, we're going to a bad place. Just back it off.

• 1:00:20Speaker 01

Anyway. Yeah, I just think, I think there's a lot of complications here, and for me, like, the notifications, then you start, like, I've read some people saying they think it makes them more present. It doesn't make me more present.

• 1:00:34Nilay Patel?

  Not at all.

• 1:00:35Speaker 01

And for me, it actually, like, yesterday is a great example, I was talking to my producer, I got an email from my editor, I looked at it and I stopped mid-sentence and ran back to my office.

• 1:00:46Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:46Speaker 01

Like, if I, usually I do look at my phone, I keep it in my back pocket if I see something, but I don't see the whole thing, and, you know-

• 1:00:54Nilay Patel?

So, I was, the way I do it is like, I let my notifications stack up. So, I go to meetings, I turn my phone upside down on the table, like, I try to pay attention to everybody, then I leave the meeting, I look at my phone, and like, there's a bunch of stuff that happened, and I can like, look at it all. It's very convenient. Being in a meeting with this thing just like, dinging away, is like, I don't want that to happen.

• 1:01:16Speaker 03

  I'm gonna say something.

• 1:01:17Nilay Patel?

And I know you can, I'm gonna get a lot of angry tweets about how you can customize it, and you don't have to worry about any, and that's true, there's like a steep learning piece of this. What were you gonna say?

• 1:01:25Speaker 03

Okay. Us, you, we are a pretty serious edge case.

• 1:01:33Speaker 01

Did you just give us a lot of vowels and consonants?

• 1:01:35Speaker 03

I think, I think we as people get a lot of notifications. Like the normal, the normal, like everyday, you know, high school kid or like mom that's driving their kid, their kids to soccer, like.

• 1:01:51Speaker 01

  I disagree.

• 1:01:51Speaker 03

They're gonna get, they're gonna get like a phone call, they're gonna get like a few text messages.

• 1:01:57Speaker 02

  Nope, nope.

• 1:01:58Nilay Patel?

Here's my new thing, here's my new thing. And I, I, I think that's what Apple thinks too.

• 1:02:03Speaker 01

  It's not true.

• 1:02:04Nilay Patel?

But you know, you know what I know is, you know how I know somebody is bad at computers now? When they, when I pick up like their phone or their iPad and they have shitty notifications on it. It's like, that is the new like Windows status bar garbage.

• 1:02:19Speaker 03

Well, well, iPad notifications stack up because I feel like the device is mostly.

• 1:02:24Nilay Patel?

Right, but so you like, you pick up, look, you, you go to somebody's house. This, I, this happens to me like, every time I go to a family member's house, I go to their house.

• 1:02:31Speaker 01

And you judge them by their.

• 1:02:32Nilay Patel?

I pick up their, like, they usually have an iPad too lying around.

• 1:02:35Speaker 01

  Yeah, I have an iPad.

• 1:02:37Nilay Patel?

Or they have an older iPad lying around and you pick it up and you're like, what are these garbage game notifications?

• 1:02:44Speaker 03

  Interesting, well.

• 1:02:45Nilay Patel?

And they're just everywhere, right? And it's like Candy Crush has been trying desperately to get, you're like.

• 1:02:50Speaker 01

  Get you back.

• 1:02:51Nilay Patel?

Yeah, get you back for like a month and a half. And you're just like, and they're like, everyone's always like, yeah, just whatever, I don't pay attention to them, you know?

• 1:02:57Speaker 01

Yeah, but I, Sam, to your point, like, people live on email, right?

• 1:03:01Speaker 03

I don't know about that, Joanna.

• 1:03:03Speaker 01

Companies live on email. Every company, you're getting tons of emails. It's how they communicate with people. It's email. It's just a thing. Everyone does it. iMessage. My family has iMessage chains now, like, and we, they're constantly talking to each other. My sister, my mom.

• 1:03:19Speaker 03

  That's fine, that's fine.

• 1:03:20Speaker 01

So many of my family friends have that. No, it's not fine because every time there's an iMessage, my wrist is buzzing. My wrist just buzzes. My mom is telling me she likes my video. Which is an important thing I need to see.

• 1:03:31Speaker 03

Isn't that the same thing as having an iPhone?

• 1:03:34Speaker 02

  No, so here's the thing.

• 1:03:35Speaker 01

No, because this is my wrist.

• 1:03:36Speaker 02

The problem is, the problem with having it on your wrist is, on your phone, you can look at it and be like, oh, I'll get to that later. And on your wrist, like, or you don't look at it, you get to it, you deal with it when you see it. On your wrist, you look at it, you're like, oh, I should do something about that, and then it's gone. It's like, when you have an inbox and you see an email and you mark it red, and then it disappears, but really, you should do something about it.

• 1:04:00Speaker 01

And also, it's another thing to remember to put into silent, like, mode.

• 1:04:04Speaker 03

I don't know. I think that when I get it, like, I just got a text message from Evan. And if I would have had that on my wrist, I wouldn't have had a look at my phone. I could just be like, oh, I'll text him after the Vergecast. Instead, I had to look at my phone, and now I could just reply to him right here. But if my phone was in my pocket, I could have just looked at my wrist. Instead, I'll get back to that after.

• 1:04:21Speaker 01

One thing that does work well is these things usually working well together. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it knows that I'm on my iPhone and looking at my iMessage, so my wrist doesn't always buzz.

• 1:04:31Nilay Patel?

Let me give you a really concrete example. Yeah, it's, and it's like, hard to know what's happening.

• 1:04:35Speaker 03

I feel like you're about to own me right now.

• 1:04:37Nilay Patel?

No, I am. No, I am. So we were shooting in our video, we were shooting, we were at the bar with Sonia from Eater, and we were shooting a video. And I needed fake notifications, so John was like, sending me fake notifications, and Jordan was sending me whatever. And then, I got, in the middle of a take, when I wasn't supposed to get one, I got a real one by accident, and it was Dieter sending an email to somebody else. And Dieter, Dieter and I play this game, where when we want something to seem more important, we'll email somebody else, and then we'll CC the other person. Just like, add our names. This is like, corporate email games, right? So Dieter's like, emailing something, and he just CC'd me, just so it's like, and now Neelai knows too. This is like, a thing that people do on their email all the time.

• 1:05:21Nilay Patel?

And so, I'm like, looking at, I'm looking at my wrist, and I'm like, this is the least important piece of information that could possibly exist.

• 1:05:29Speaker 02

Right, so. By the way, that's his reaction every time I send an email.

• 1:05:32Speaker 03

But then, right, like, on that, on that same... On that same plane, let's say you didn't have the watch on your wrist, you had the phone on the table. That's the exact same thing.

• 1:05:41Nilay Patel?

No, no, because I can take my phone and put it face down over there.

• 1:05:44Speaker 01

That's what I do. I usually put my phone face down.

• 1:05:46Nilay Patel?

I can, you can do all kinds of things with a phone that you can't do with a watch. And the watch literally taps you.

• 1:05:53Speaker 03

It's an all or none thing. Like when you strap this thing to your wrist, you are going into notification hell.

• 1:05:58Speaker 01

But you can customize to a degree. That's why I was talking about VIP, right?

• 1:06:01Nilay Patel?

Right, so Dieter's on my VIP list.

• 1:06:03Speaker 01

  VIP.

• 1:06:04Nilay Patel?

Yeah, like, by the way, you made it, buddy.

• 1:06:06Speaker 01

  You're VIP.

• 1:06:08Nilay Patel?

Uh, so, but I, but that, but Dieter sends a lot of emails.

• 1:06:11Speaker 03

Look, I'm gonna get my watch and I'm gonna review it. And I'll put some words on the internet about it.

• 1:06:16Speaker 01

Yeah, we'll read it on samsheffer.com.

• 1:06:18Nilay Patel?

Alright, we need to talk about, Sean's gonna kill himself.

• 1:06:21Speaker 03

  We.

• 1:06:21Nilay Patel?

Like, I can literally just hear him.

• 1:06:22Speaker 03

We've been going for over an hour.

• 1:06:24Nilay Patel?

I can feel the waves of anger coming out of the booth over there. It's great. Okay, we need to do, John, I know we're going long.

• 1:06:30Speaker 03

  We'll just, we'll just.

• 1:06:31Nilay Patel?

We need to do five or 10 on the MacBook. Dieter, I'm much.

• 1:06:33Speaker 01

Are we gonna talk about this Motorola selfie stick?

• 1:06:35Nilay Patel?

No. We're gonna acknowledge that you have it.

• 1:06:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, no, we didn't.

• 1:06:38Nilay Patel?

  It's made of wood.

• 1:06:39Speaker 01

  It's very fine.

• 1:06:40Speaker 02

  So, the new MacBook.

• 1:06:41Speaker 01

Have you felt the leather on this strap?

• 1:06:43Speaker 02

  Wow. It's, um, it's, it's like.

• 1:06:48Speaker 01

  Like a laptop.

• 1:06:49Speaker 02

It's a laptop, but it's like, it's like, the thing I wrote was like, it's like if the iPad Air 2 decided, you know what? I wish I was a laptop and ran OS 10. And then that's what happened. Like, it's super thin, it's super light, it's a little underpowered.

• 1:07:03Speaker 01

I'm not gonna have as much battery life.

• 1:07:05Speaker 02

Yeah, well, yeah. I don't know, what do you, what do you got on battery life?

• 1:07:10Speaker 01

I've been getting not good battery life.

• 1:07:11Speaker 02

Really? I'm getting like a solid eight hours.

• 1:07:14Speaker 01

I know, I barely moved to seven, like, seven hours. Do you have brightness up?

• 1:07:20Speaker 02

Yeah, it's like, I usually keep my brightness pretty low.

• 1:07:22Speaker 01

  I keep my brightness high.

• 1:07:23Speaker 02

Okay, I don't. Uh, does yours get hot?

• 1:07:25Nilay Patel?

  I keep my brightness medium.

• 1:07:27Speaker 02

  Mine gets pretty warm.

• 1:07:28Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:07:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:30Speaker 03

  Super epic.

• 1:07:31Speaker 01

It's gotten a little bit warm. Um, I, I probably am not pushing it far. I mean, when, like, this thing hates Chrome.

• 1:07:38Speaker 03

Oh god, this thing hates Chrome so much.

• 1:07:40Speaker 01

And people are yelling at me for saying that in my review, like, because I tested it with Chrome, but you know what? A lot of people use Chrome. Apple says, most people use Safari, and I believe that, but I use Chrome. I love Chrome. Um, and it was getting slow using Chrome.

• 1:07:55Speaker 02

Yeah, if you gotta go over a dozen tabs in Chrome and you're like, in a world of hurt.

• 1:07:58Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:08:00Speaker 01

  I totally.

• 1:08:01Speaker 02

But like, literally, everybody wrote the same thing, which is like, this is the future.

• 1:08:05Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:08:06Speaker 02

This is what all laptops will be. Just.

• 1:08:08Speaker 03

Isn't it crazy how we said that about?

• 1:08:10Speaker 01

It makes me feel like I should have just written something else, because everyone wrote the same thing.

• 1:08:14Speaker 03

Yeah, they're the same thing about the air, right?

• 1:08:16Speaker 01

Yeah, totally. It's a very, everyone wrote that, too.

• 1:08:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:20Speaker 03

  But it's like this.

• 1:08:21Speaker 01

Your ending of your review is very much like, it's almost like we shared our reviews with each other. We didn't. We did not.

• 1:08:27Speaker 02

  The.

• 1:08:28Speaker 01

I had no idea how Dieter felt about this stuff today.

• 1:08:31Speaker 02

Was, had like more things that were clearly wrong with it. It was not a beautiful object. It was like, it was an impressive object. But like, in terms of build quality and amazingness, it was like, kind of floppy. This thing, like.

• 1:08:44Speaker 01

  Amazing.

• 1:08:45Speaker 02

Yeah, you list complaints on it. It's like, wait for, wait for the dongles to, to exist and improve the speed and I guess for a joint of the battery life. And I don't have any other complaints. Like, that's it. But like, I've never held a laptop better designed. I love the keyboard. Some people are complaining. I think it's great.

• 1:09:03Speaker 01

It just took a little bit to get used to. And then when I go back to my MacBook, I, I like, I'm like, oh, yeah, I missed you.

• 1:09:08Nilay Patel?

Yeah, it feels like when you went from like an old keyboard to like a chicklet keyboard.

• 1:09:12Speaker 01

Totally. I, I think that it's a little bit about, like, it's, it's not like that. It's like that going from a desktop keyboard to like something different.

• 1:09:19Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:09:19Speaker 01

It's not a bad thing. I was kind of mixed on that. It's not a, it's not a good or a bad thing.

• 1:09:24Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:25Speaker 01

I mean, I love this touchpad so much. I just love it.

• 1:09:28Speaker 02

So why? I like, I love it, but it's, I love it just because it feels like a Mac trackpad. And I, I love that there's like dark magic inside it. Yeah, okay. You can click on the top, I guess.

• 1:09:36Speaker 01

Right. It's wider. I mean, yeah, I mean, and you're like, piece on forced touch is like the same. It's like, just crazy to me.

• 1:09:42Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:09:43Speaker 01

It's just, just, it's a crazy magical thing. Um, yeah, I think this is the most beautiful laptop ever created, but I don't think anyone should really buy it.

• 1:09:52Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:52Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 1:09:54Nilay Patel?

The Apple, the Apple Inc. story.

• 1:09:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:09:56Nilay Patel?

Apple 2015, pushing, pushing all of the envelopes.

• 1:09:59Speaker 01

  Both reviews were very similar.

• 1:10:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:10:01Nilay Patel?

Both of them was like, this Apple product is amazing. Uh, wait for the next one. Yeah, but the problem is that the, with the watch, like, this is the only one. It's the product category launch. With this, it's like, they're pushing the envelope.

• 1:10:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:13Nilay Patel?

If you're the sort of person, and I think that there's a reason it comes in like many colors, like.

• 1:10:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:10:18Nilay Patel?

If you're the sort of person who just like buys a laptop all the time.

• 1:10:20Speaker 02

  Gets space gray.

• 1:10:21Nilay Patel?

Or you can afford to buy a laptop every year. Like, you're gonna buy a fashionable laptop for you and like chuck it.

• 1:10:26Speaker 01

  Who does that?

• 1:10:27Nilay Patel?

I think a lot. I think like random people just like buy a thousand dollar laptop whenever they want to.

• 1:10:31Speaker 01

  I don't think so.

• 1:10:32Nilay Patel?

I think there are rich people.

• 1:10:33Speaker 03

There are definitely rich people out there.

• 1:10:34Speaker 01

Yeah, we, there are definitely rich people out there, but I think rich people out there who I hear from a lot.

• 1:10:40Nilay Patel?

  At the Wall Street Journal?

• 1:10:41Speaker 01

I do, I really do, and they want something that works for them.

• 1:10:45Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:46Speaker 01

Like, they're not interested in this looking beautiful. They're like, I have to plug in my phone to charge.

• 1:10:51Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 1:10:51Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't, I mean, like my aunt who...

• 1:10:54Nilay Patel?

You have like business people, though.

• 1:10:56Speaker 03

  There...

• 1:10:56Speaker 01

Yeah, but even, no, but even like my aunt is a great example. She needs a new laptop. She saw this. She was like, it's beautiful. I want this. And I said, told her all the problems with it. She said, yeah, I'll just get the Air right now.

• 1:11:07Nilay Patel?

Yeah. Wait, so I, this is a fact. Becky is currently using, how old is that computer? I bought it from Dieter.

• 1:11:13Speaker 01

You tell this story like all the time.

• 1:11:15Speaker 03

  It's like a 2010. I actually don't, I don't know this story.

• 1:11:17Speaker 01

You have to buy her a new one.

• 1:11:18Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, I'll think about it.

• 1:11:18Speaker 01

We don't want to hear this anymore.

• 1:11:19Nilay Patel?

  She's using a 2010?

• 1:11:20Speaker 03

  Wait, is it 2010?

• 1:11:21Nilay Patel?

We bought, I bought it from Dieter before we launched The Verge.

• 1:11:24Speaker 03

  Holy crap.

• 1:11:26Nilay Patel?

It was, no, it was a total desperation buy. It was right when we moved to New York and she was taking...

• 1:11:31Speaker 03

  Whoa.

• 1:11:32Nilay Patel?

The, she was going back to Illinois to take the Illinois bar exam, and you take bar exams on the computer. Um, so she needed a laptop that worked, and her original Air, she, she had bought the original first Air, the curvy one, that died like, like a week before the Illinois bar exam. So she like, we just needed a new computer. And I like, because she had to like load all the stuff and like, it had to work. I gave you a good deal on it. Yeah, it was great. Did I pay you? Yeah, I don't know. I'm still unclear if I paid you.

• 1:11:59Speaker 03

  And she still uses it.

• 1:12:00Nilay Patel?

The good deal was that Dieter named a price and I didn't give him any money. Yeah. No, I'm pretty sure. Did I pay you? Who cares? Okay. It's past, it's past. Uh, anyway, so we, she has this machine that like, was a desperation, like need a laptop right this second.

• 1:12:14Speaker 03

  That's her computer still.

• 1:12:15Nilay Patel?

Can't wait for, in order to come in, we, she just had to go back to Chicago and like get to, get studying also. And she's had it forever. She doesn't complain about it. And then she saw this one, and she's like, can I have that? And I was like-

• 1:12:26Speaker 03

  Because it's gold.

• 1:12:27Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, and it's like-

• 1:12:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's beautiful.

• 1:12:29Nilay Patel?

  It looks beautiful.

• 1:12:29Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:12:30Nilay Patel?

And because I've been waiting to upgrade her because she doesn't like she uses it to Chrome. That's what she uses it for. She watches Netflix on the iPad.

• 1:12:37Speaker 02

Oh, if she's using it for Chrome, you shouldn't get her this laptop.

• 1:12:39Nilay Patel?

  No.

• 1:12:40Speaker 02

You gotta convert to Safari first. That'll be fine.

• 1:12:42Nilay Patel?

Fun. Okay, I won't do it.

• 1:12:44Speaker 03

There's a market out there for-

• 1:12:45Speaker 01

She never wants to like charge her phone on her laptop.

• 1:12:47Nilay Patel?

She charges her phone on the laptop.

• 1:12:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:12:49Speaker 01

  Where?

• 1:12:50Nilay Patel?

  Uh, the USB port.

• 1:12:50Speaker 01

  At home?

• 1:12:51Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:12:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, well then-

• 1:12:52Nilay Patel?

  No, when we travel.

• 1:12:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, then no.

• 1:12:54Speaker 02

Yeah, she'd have to live la vida dongle.

• 1:12:56Speaker 01

  Yeah, I love that.

• 1:12:57Speaker 02

  Live in la vida dongle.

• 1:12:58Speaker 03

  Will Apple make-

• 1:12:59Speaker 01

You can't live la vida dongle.

• 1:13:02Speaker 03

Dieter, do you think Apple will make a USB Type C to Lightning?

• 1:13:05Speaker 02

Uh, I think that they will, yeah.

• 1:13:08Speaker 03

  Yeah?

• 1:13:08Nilay Patel?

  No, they're gonna, it'll be-

• 1:13:09Speaker 01

They'll just make Lightning have a USB Type C at the other end.

• 1:13:12Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's what, that's what he's-

• 1:13:13Nilay Patel?

No, but I think they're, I think in enterprise and third party-

• 1:13:16Speaker 01

Oh, I thought you meant a dongle.

• 1:13:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:18Speaker 03

  No, like-

• 1:13:18Nilay Patel?

Would make a USB C into the thing with a branch out Lightning.

• 1:13:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:22Nilay Patel?

So it's like two in one.

• 1:13:22Speaker 02

  Probably, yeah.

• 1:13:24Speaker 01

  That would be great.

• 1:13:24Speaker 03

  And Apple has a-

• 1:13:25Speaker 02

Well, no, so Apple's super excited for all of these third-party adapters. They, they, they are not, they don't want you to buy the Apple-approved $80 thing. Obviously, they do, but they like, I charged this thing with a plug that came with the ChromaPixel off of a rando battery pack.

• 1:13:42Speaker 01

  Yeah, I've done that too.

• 1:13:43Speaker 02

  Right?

• 1:13:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, I mean-

• 1:13:45Speaker 03

  Fascinating.

• 1:13:46Speaker 01

Apple's connector situation right now is incredibly messed up.

• 1:13:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:13:51Speaker 01

  Like if you, like I-

• 1:13:52Speaker 03

There are a lot of them.

• 1:13:52Speaker 01

Last week, I was carrying like five or six different Apple chargers. I had the charger for my Mac, my Air. I had the charger for the Mac, this MacBook. I had the charger for the watch. I had the charger for my iPhone.

• 1:14:09Speaker 01

  That's four different charger cords.

• 1:14:11Nilay Patel?

I definitely just got a text on my watch well after I received it on Mac.

• 1:14:14Speaker 01

And also, let's talk about it.

• 1:14:15Speaker 02

  That's bad.

• 1:14:15Speaker 01

I, how is Apple not working on wireless charging? I mean, they are, but like what, like that's what made, would make sense for the watch.

• 1:14:23Speaker 02

Maybe they just think it's terrible?

• 1:14:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:26Speaker 02

Because it is in general like, pretty slow.

• 1:14:30Speaker 03

What do you want wireless charging for, Jonah?

• 1:14:31Speaker 01

So all of those things could charge so I don't have to carry around four cords.

• 1:14:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:14:35Speaker 03

So just the pad? You just want a pad and drop things on the pad?

• 1:14:38Speaker 02

You know what I want is the bowl. Intel makes a bowl, so you don't have to line up with a pad and just chuck it in the bowl.

• 1:14:43Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 1:14:45Speaker 01

  Or, yeah.

• 1:14:46Speaker 02

  Yeah. Hmm. That's the Vergecast.

• 1:14:49Nilay Patel?

There it is, everybody. Petering out, petering to the end.

• 1:14:52Speaker 02

Mm-hmm. Let's all rest our heads on the microphone.

• 1:14:54Nilay Patel?

Dejana's literally going to sleep on the microphone now. All right. Sam.

• 1:14:58Speaker 03

  Hey.

• 1:14:59Nilay Patel?

  Engage.

• 1:14:59Speaker 01

We haven't talked about this stuff.

• 1:15:01Nilay Patel?

  It's not gonna happen.

• 1:15:02Speaker 01

Why? This needs to be over.

• 1:15:04Nilay Patel?

  It's a, you, it's literally a stick.

• 1:15:06Speaker 01

It's not. It's more than that.

• 1:15:07Nilay Patel?

  What is it?

• 1:15:08Speaker 02

The wood matches my Moto X.

• 1:15:10Nilay Patel?

  Okay, Sam, engage.
