• 0:59Brooke Averick?

Hi, everyone. This is Brooke speaking. This is Brooke and Connor Make-A-Podcast. We have already recorded. I'm coming at you after the recording of the main episode, which was, in a word, fabulous.

• 1:13Connor Wood?

  It was fabulous.

• 1:14Brooke Averick?

It was truly, I cannot wait for you guys to listen to this. I guess hats out of the cat now that it was Alana Glazer. Like, that is truly out of this world.

• 1:24Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 1:25Brooke Averick?

But I do have a personal announcement that I need to make before we get into the episode, which is that my book sold.

• 1:36Brooke Averick?

  Thank you.

• 1:39Brooke Averick?

What a week it's been. My debut novel is going to be published

• 1:48Brooke Averick?

by Crown Publishing, which is an imprint of Penguin Random House. They have also published Normal People. And, Connor, tell them.

• 1:59Connor Wood?

And Greenlight by my father, Mr. McConaughey.

• 2:02Brooke Averick?

Which is really beautiful, because that's truly one of the only books you've read, right?

• 2:06Connor Wood?

  In my adult life, yeah.

• 2:07Brooke Averick?

  So it's all coming together.

• 2:09Connor Wood?

  It is.

• 2:10Brooke Averick?

I am, like, pretty beside myself with excitement. What can I tell you? The title is Phoebe Berman's Gonna Lose It.

• 2:20Brooke Averick?

I've been dying to say, Phoebe has been with me for the past four months, and she's my best friend. My sister.

• 2:29Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 2:30Brooke Averick?

My family. It's been hard to keep her name in. But now I can just be like, oh Phoebe, Phoebe, Phoebe, Phoebe.

• 2:35Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 2:36Brooke Averick?

I can't wait for you guys to meet her. Um, Phoebe is a young woman with crippling intimacy anxiety. And so she is about to turn 30 and she has not lost her virginity yet. So she has 30 days. She's giving herself 30 days before her birthday to do that.

• 2:56Connor Wood?

  Mm hmm.

• 2:57Brooke Averick?

And in those 30 days, you know, a lot happens.

• 3:00Connor Wood?

A lot can happen in 30 days.

• 3:01Brooke Averick?

Um, she might meet some people. There might be some love interests.

• 3:05Connor Wood?

  There might be.

• 3:06Brooke Averick?

There might be some therapy appointments.

• 3:08Connor Wood?

  Could be.

• 3:08Brooke Averick?

There might be some panic attacks.

• 3:10Connor Wood?

  There will be.

• 3:12Brooke Averick?

And there will also be a lot of fun and love and friendship. And I just can't wait for you to get your hands on it. And also, what I keep forgetting to say, which is also kind of a big deal. Um, it's a two book deal. So after you get your hands on Phoebe, you will get your hands on something else as well. So, yeah, there will be, that's, I think, the big announcement. Um, there will be more later down the line, such as when it comes out. And, um, the cover and such like that. But for now, when somebody asks me what I do, ask me what I do.

• 3:53Connor Wood?

What do you do for work?

• 3:54Brooke Averick?

  I'm an author.

• 3:55Connor Wood?

Have you written anything that I might have heard of?

• 3:57Brooke Averick?

Um, my debut novel is actually coming out.

• 3:59Connor Wood?

  Oh, really?

• 4:00Brooke Averick?

  Soon.

• 4:01Connor Wood?

  What's it called?

• 4:02Brooke Averick?

  Phoebe Berman's Gonna Lose It.

• 4:03Connor Wood?

  Oh, shut the hell up.

• 4:04Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 4:05Connor Wood?

I'll put it on my Goodreads. Want to read?

• 4:07Brooke Averick?

  Please do.

• 4:09Connor Wood?

I heard it was on, no.

• 4:10Brooke Averick?

It's not, it's not anywhere, it's not there yet, but I will let you know when it's there.

• 4:13Connor Wood?

Oh, that's so exciting. We're all.

• 4:15Brooke Averick?

  Thank you so much.

• 4:15Connor Wood?

We're all so happy for you, Brooke.

• 4:17Brooke Averick?

Yes, that's the, that's the big announcement.

• 4:18Connor Wood?

  So proud of you.

• 4:19Brooke Averick?

Okay, that's the big thing. And now I'm so excited for you to listen to this episode. What a freaking week, you guys.

• 4:24Connor Wood?

  What a freaking week.

• 4:25Brooke Averick?

  What a freaking week.

• 4:26Connor Wood?

Oh, so good, Brooke. We're so happy.

• 4:28Brooke Averick?

Thank you, my love. Thank you.

• 4:29Connor Wood?

Everyone, I think we could, we could all agree. We all said in unison, watch this space.

• 4:35Brooke Averick?

Watch this space. Yeah. Phoebe is sending her love. Thank you. Here's the episode.

• 5:01Speaker 04

And when you say Kelly Clarkson Collection, you mean literally this chair?

• 5:05Brooke Averick?

  That chair?

• 5:05Connor Wood?

That's a custom piece from Kelly.

• 5:08Speaker 04

  Not custom, mass-produced.

• 5:10Connor Wood?

Customly mass-produced by our girl, one of our close friends.

• 5:13Brooke Averick?

These are custom non-Kelly Clarkson. That's Kelly Clarkson.

• 5:18Speaker 04

So Kelly has a talk show and then she's like, "You're seeing me sit in leather club chairs. You might want one that I would put my ass on."

• 5:25Connor Wood?

Do you hear the sound that my ass makes on this chair? Do you not want this? Luckily, everything picks up on the mics.

• 5:30Speaker 04

Oh my gosh, you know what, though? The Kelly Clarkson one is smoother and it's not making that same sound.

• 5:35Connor Wood?

And you pray, as an artist, that the Kelly Clarkson Collection Wayfair mass-produced chairs, don't do a cover of your song because you're toast, bitch.

• 5:44Speaker 04

Can you just put the mic to your ass as you do that?

• 5:51Speaker 04

  Now check this out.

• 5:54Speaker 04

Oh, smooth as butter. Smooth as butter.

• 5:57Connor Wood?

  Don't slip.

• 5:58Speaker 04

  Are we recording?

• 6:00Connor Wood?

  I guess that's a question on everybody's lips.

• 6:02Speaker 04

Are they professionals here at TMG Network? Of course.

• 6:04Brooke Averick?

Not yet, but working on it.

• 6:08Speaker 04

Is that the mother of a four-month-old? Yeah.

• 6:10Brooke Averick?

  He knows to record.

• 6:11Speaker 04

Let's hug him up. He was ready 7:00 a.m.

• 6:14Brooke Averick?

He was recording at 7:00 a.m.

• 6:16Connor Wood?

I'm just gonna get some extra cord.

• 6:18Speaker 04

Connor, you go ahead. You practice our intro. We've been getting really good at practicing our intro.

• 6:22Connor Wood?

So we've been working on it for...

• 6:23Speaker 04

I'm gonna pass it to you today.

• 6:24Connor Wood?

137 episodes. Welcome back to Brooke and Connor Make a Podcast. We have, how do you say? There's a certain je ne sais quoi about us today in the studio.

• 6:37Speaker 04

And the je ne sais quoi is to our left. Alana Glazer is here today and that's a sentence that I never thought would come out of my mouth, Alana. I do need to get the fangirling out of the way right now so we can just move on.

• 6:52Brooke Averick?

I mean, I'm like obsessed with you. You are just my comedy idol and just as a human as well too also.

• 7:00Connor Wood?

I'll take the baton whatever and just kind of echo. I'll echo Brooks. Can I have your, just one finger would be great because we've been holding space for you in this studio.

• 7:09Brooke Averick?

You come up at least every episode, at least once.

• 7:11Connor Wood?

Yes. So it's such an honor to have you here today. It's unbelievable. I'm looking over, I'm like, was that chocolate protein bar this morning? Actually like a mushroom bar? Like what am I looking? You're here. This is amazing.

• 7:24Speaker 04

A vision. I'm here. I'm so proud of you.

• 7:27Brooke Averick?

  Oh my God.

• 7:28Speaker 04

I'm so impressed by your self-starterdom, your understanding the landscape and building within it. I am so touched and moved by your

• 7:39Connor Wood?

  Are you crying?

• 7:40Speaker 04

Little spirits. By your sweet little spirits, your, your zillennial vibe. I would have babysat you is kind of the thing that I, you know what I mean? Like I was with Brooke yesterday and I'm just like, as well, I would have babysat her as well. And I'm just so moved, you guys. It's so, it's like truly my honor to be here and honor to serve you in the way that you tell me I have. So I really appreciate it.

• 8:09Connor Wood?

So that is the episode, you guys. Thank you so much.

• 8:10Brooke Averick?

  Thank you so much.

• 8:11Connor Wood?

  For listening today.

• 8:12Speaker 04

Oh my gosh, you guys are so sweet.

• 8:15Brooke Averick?

  Oh Alana.

• 8:16Speaker 04

My little sweetie pies, my little babies.

• 8:18Brooke Averick?

  You came to my school.

• 8:20Speaker 04

  What?

• 8:21Brooke Averick?

  When I was a freshman.

• 8:22Speaker 04

  Huh?

• 8:22Brooke Averick?

  BU.

• 8:25Speaker 04

  What?

• 8:25Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 8:26Speaker 04

  What happened?

• 8:27Brooke Averick?

You just, you and Abby did a

• 8:29Speaker 04

  Oh no.

• 8:29Brooke Averick?

  A thing.

• 8:30Speaker 04

  Uh huh.

• 8:30Brooke Averick?

And it was first come, first served.

• 8:32Speaker 04

What did we do? A talk?

• 8:33Brooke Averick?

A talk. And I will say I did block out those four years of my life, so it's a little fuzzy.

• 8:38Speaker 04

  Sure.

• 8:38Brooke Averick?

But I would, you know, I was there 7:00 AM because it was first come, first served.

• 8:42Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 8:42Brooke Averick?

And I had a great time in the line.

• 8:44Speaker 04

  Oh, sweet.

• 8:45Connor Wood?

  Did you get? And?

• 8:47Brooke Averick?

I did, because I was one of the first.

• 8:50Connor Wood?

Okay. The experience stopped at the line, that's why I wasn't sure if...

• 8:53Brooke Averick?

Oh, sorry, yeah. I mean, it was a fabulous experience.

• 8:56Connor Wood?

  That's...

• 8:57Brooke Averick?

And I never use that word fabulous.

• 8:58Connor Wood?

I've never heard you say that.

• 8:59Brooke Averick?

  I've never said fabulous.

• 9:00Speaker 04

  Well, that itself is fabulous.

• 9:02Brooke Averick?

Fabulous, and you know what else is fabulous?

• 9:04Speaker 04

  What?

• 9:04Brooke Averick?

  Human magic.

• 9:06Speaker 04

Oh, thank you. Thanks so much.

• 9:08Connor Wood?

That was a gorgeous transition, by the way.

• 9:11Brooke Averick?

Yeah, I want to make sure that we talk about it now, because we do tend to, you know, go in some different directions sometimes.

• 9:17Speaker 04

  I really appreciate your focus.

• 9:18Brooke Averick?

Yeah, thank you, Alana. Completely fabulous.

• 9:22Speaker 04

  Thank you so much.

• 9:23Brooke Averick?

And you really touched on something that I feel like we don't talk about a lot, and we should be talking about every single day. The fact that what is happening in our bodies when we're pregnant, that is like sorcery.

• 9:38Speaker 04

The entire global society we live in, and also what is rising up right now, is the denial of the powerful magic we hold in our bodies.

• 9:48Brooke Averick?

  Yes.

• 9:49Speaker 04

It is incredible. We should be sitting in wonder. It is itself, it is life.

• 9:56Brooke Averick?

  Harry Potter could never.

• 9:57Speaker 04

  It is just like...

• 9:58Brooke Averick?

Oh, he could absolutely never. He is disappearing into the background like Marty McFly, you know, in Back to the Future.

• 10:07Speaker 04

Do you guys know Back to the Future?

• 10:08Brooke Averick?

  Yes.

• 10:09Speaker 04

  Who? Jesus.

• 10:09Brooke Averick?

  Yes, yes, yes, yes.

• 10:10Speaker 04

You know what I mean, just because of J.K. Rowling. But, yeah, I was just saying to your producer, Ryan, who was a four-month-old, I was like, "It's the most incredible experience of my life," but it's like, it is life. It is life. And also, like, the way that we, you know, to choose not to have a baby is equally as powerful. Because it's like, you could do that and you're not? That's fucking cool.

• 10:31Brooke Averick?

  That is.

• 10:32Speaker 04

And it's like, nice to like, rest.

• 10:34Brooke Averick?

It's always nice to rest. I've always said that.

• 10:36Speaker 04

  I love rest.

• 10:37Brooke Averick?

  I love rest.

• 10:39Speaker 04

I love it. Yeah, well, thank you so much. Also, yeah, go ahead.

• 10:44Connor Wood?

And it's out on December 20th.

• 10:45Brooke Averick?

It is out on December 20th.

• 10:46Connor Wood?

Alana's special, Human Magic, out on December 20th.

• 10:49Speaker 04

  On Hulu and Disney+ worldwide.

• 10:51Connor Wood?

It was so fun. It was also so real, like, watching you give a stand-up special, and it was so you. You know what I mean?

• 10:58Speaker 04

  I'm so glad.

• 10:59Connor Wood?

It's so interesting, because you see a lot of comedians also grow out of... You know, they transition from, from one type of comedian and then they go through life and then they become, and there was so much you that I saw in Broad City, like, oh gee, and it's just, you're just like, you, you're the same person, but you're evolved more.

• 11:17Brooke Averick?

Thank you so much. Thank you.

• 11:19Connor Wood?

I thought, oh, well, it was just, it was so crazy and so consistent to see like, your humor shine through even with like new experiences. And the way that you describe your pregnancy, it's, it's like, oh, that's new. Like, I didn't know this was gonna happen. I wanna talk about this, we talked about this too. We talk about this all the time because, did you, when you, when you had your baby, did you have like a coming of age type situation where you're like, I'm not the baby anymore?

• 11:46Brooke Averick?

  Oh, for sure.

• 11:47Connor Wood?

Right? Did we always talk about that?

• 11:49Brooke Averick?

Well, yeah, cuz we're, you know, in, in our twenties, almost in our late twenties. And we're always like, when are we gonna?

• 11:54Connor Wood?

  Well, I wouldn't say.

• 11:55Brooke Averick?

  I wouldn't, you wouldn't say late?

• 11:56Connor Wood?

  No, it's all perspective.

• 11:57Brooke Averick?

I agree. We're always like, when are we gonna feel like grownups? When is that gonna happen? So, we were wondering, like, does something like that happen when you have a child?

• 12:09Speaker 04

For sure. Um, it definitely does. But so also, what's crazy is like, you yourself are a baby, also, when you have a baby. It's so like goo goo gaga for the parents as well. And, um, yeah, I would say that is one way to feel adult, is to be fully responsible for a little helpless creature.

• 12:31Connor Wood?

Mm-hmm. You, you said that too. You said, they're just helpless and they have rubber neck and everything.

• 12:36Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 12:36Connor Wood?

And I look at other people's babies and I don't feel like, oh, I have a father instinct that just kicked in. I'm like, ew, that's disgusting. That baby looks like, like, like goo to me.

• 12:46Speaker 04

  Babies gross you out?

• 12:48Connor Wood?

  Newborn babies.

• 12:49Speaker 04

  I get it.

• 12:50Connor Wood?

Yeah, I mean, I mean, surely if I saw yours, I'd be like, that's, that's art.

• 12:54Speaker 04

I mean, that's so sweet. It's like, you know, a lot of people, like, it's so weird to like, um, you know, um, how do I say this? I'm like, you know, um, yeah, me too, um, let me like take one, one inhalation, one exhalation, and then speak a sentence.

• 13:10Connor Wood?

I talk right through those, so.

• 13:13Speaker 04

  Notes.

• 13:16Speaker 04

You don't know what you're gonna feel when you become a parent.

• 13:19Brooke Averick?

  Mm-hmm.

• 13:20Speaker 04

I was like, uh, I feel really organized around it and like I've always wanted to be one. And, um, but some people like get there and they're like, ooh, I don't like this.

• 13:31Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 13:32Speaker 04

I've heard in the last few years, a conversation around like, I'm not, um, people say that they are gonna be better parents of older kids, that they're not such like baby people, which I get. I do love babies, but I get it. And also like, it's, it's very different. You see other people's babies and you might be like, mm, or ew.

• 13:52Brooke Averick?

  Right.

• 13:52Speaker 04

And, um, your own is different.

• 13:54Connor Wood?

Yeah. I feel like it's like when someone talks shit about your sibling.

• 13:59Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 14:00Connor Wood?

You talk shit about your sibling all the time. As soon as someone's like, yeah, she is a bitch. You say, hey, hey. No, no.

• 14:05Speaker 04

  Right.

• 14:06Connor Wood?

  No.

• 14:06Speaker 04

  That's so true.

• 14:07Connor Wood?

But I can talk about my sister, you know? She's a bitch.

• 14:11Speaker 04

  Absolutely.

• 14:11Connor Wood?

  But you can't say that.

• 14:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 14:13Brooke Averick?

  Right.

• 14:14Speaker 04

But like, what, what feels like growing up to you guys? You're in your very early twenties.

• 14:20Brooke Averick?

Early, almost a teen, you could almost say.

• 14:22Speaker 04

And you've, you've built this show and following what, what feels, um, and this world, you know, this is like a world that you have, like, do you not feel grown up? And you're like, we have this success, but we don't feel grown up. What's your deal?

• 14:39Brooke Averick?

I don't feel grown up yet. I did just get a cat. And I'm not comparing my cat to a human baby, even though it can be tempting sometimes. Um, that's the most grown up I've ever felt.

• 14:49Speaker 04

Oh my gosh, on the plane yesterday, there were two individuals, I think they were a human couple. And they each had, uh, um, like wraps, like chest wraps of dogs in them.

• 15:00Brooke Averick?

I just ordered, I just ordered a baby Bjorn.

• 15:03Speaker 04

A baby Bjorn for your cat?

• 15:04Brooke Averick?

I just ordered a baby Bjorn for Jonathan.

• 15:07Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:07Brooke Averick?

And I never thought I'd be the one to do it.

• 15:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:10Brooke Averick?

Trust me, I got him a few months ago. I didn't even like cats.

• 15:13Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 15:14Brooke Averick?

To transition from not liking cats to Baby Bjorn that quickly. It's almost magic.

• 15:19Connor Wood?

That's an animal instinct. That's motherhood. Well, I can't speak to motherhood.

• 15:22Speaker 04

But that's what I'm talking about.

• 15:23Connor Wood?

  Something clicked.

• 15:24Speaker 04

Like this love inside of you bursts open and it's like, it's shocking. That is how my special Human Magic begins. The joy of parenting is shocking. How hard it is. Like, you're kind of prepared for it because that's like all anyone can fucking bitch about all the time, which like I totally get. It's like so hard. But I think if we sat in wonder of the joy.

• 15:45Brooke Averick?

  Yes.

• 15:46Speaker 04

Capitalism would come to a halt.

• 15:49Brooke Averick?

I love that so much because I was listening to.

• 15:51Connor Wood?

I just got chills, by the way.

• 15:52Speaker 04

I love it. Oh, my God. I'm chilling the youth.

• 15:55Brooke Averick?

I was listening to one of your interviews.

• 15:58Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 15:58Brooke Averick?

And you were saying that like the messaging behind motherhood is very much like Marge Simpson-y, like kind of like.

• 16:05Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 16:06Brooke Averick?

And I think that's so true. And just like the joy that you've brought to the concept of being a mother and being pregnant and giving birth in your special is just, it's so exciting for me as somebody who would love to do that one day. It's, it gives me something to look forward to.

• 16:21Speaker 04

I'm so glad. And it's like, it is, I so appreciate what you're saying about the continuation from Broad City to Babes to Human Magic because

• 16:31Speaker 04

I've, Abby Jacobson, my Broad City partner, went to art school and her parents were artists and she was always like able to claim that role of an artist in a way that I was like, I don't know, I'm kind of more of a chimney sweep who does comedy. You know, and like the way that she like took it on, I always admired and learned from her and I'm really arriving there now and able to see the whole like just being and living my life and then working on it in my therapy practice. And then, once I've figured it out enough, let it go into art and like release it into the world. And, but you can feel in Human Magic, like the Broad City vibes around, the stoner vibes around getting pregnant, like.

• 17:15Speaker 04

You know, as you saw in the special, like, it's like I smoked a little bit when I was

• 17:21Connor Wood?

I wanted to ask about that.

• 17:22Speaker 04

And I drank a touch, you know what I mean?

• 17:24Connor Wood?

I wanted to ask about that.

• 17:24Speaker 04

But then, at a certain point, and you may, I'm just gonna finish this sentence really quick.

• 17:28Connor Wood?

  No, no.

• 17:28Speaker 04

Um, but, but then, like you, I, then I, I really didn't need to anymore because like, my, I'm tripping my balls off, pregnant.

• 17:35Connor Wood?

  Uh huh.

• 17:36Speaker 04

  Tripping my balls off.

• 17:38Brooke Averick?

  The drug of its own.

• 17:39Speaker 04

There's like a person going like this, you know what I mean?

• 17:41Connor Wood?

  Oh my god.

• 17:41Speaker 04

Trying to like, it's crazy. It's, it's, it was, it's fucking incredible.

• 17:45Brooke Averick?

  It's incredible.

• 17:46Speaker 04

  Incredible.

• 17:47Connor Wood?

  I have a question.

• 17:47Speaker 04

  Please.

• 17:48Connor Wood?

Do you ever wake up, you know, when you go to sleep in a hotel room and you wake up and you, you're like, where am I? Like, you wake up in the morning, like, where's the restroom? What's the layout of this place? I'm in my, I'm supposed to be in my room.

• 17:59Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 17:59Connor Wood?

Do you ever wake up and you've got, like, an eight-month-old being in your body and you're like, huh, like, what the hell just moved? Like, is there a spider on me? Spider?

• 18:08Speaker 04

Yeah, you know what? The other thing to the point of what I was saying earlier, um, this conversation, especially from, um, mothers of like, I'm just not a baby person. And I'm, I'm, you know, that, which, like, respect for, like, being able to, um, locate that and say it. A lot of people also, like, you get pregnant and it's like the thing you gotta do to make a person, but like, a lot of people don't like it, or it freaks them out, which I totally get. I think once, closer to the end, I was like, huh, like, it was like, it felt like, um, I wasn't, like, watering a plant, but I was, like, renting the main area of my house. You know, it's like, as though you have, like, reconstruction, I've never done, like, a renovation, but people, like, complain about their renovations or whatever, and it's like, they can't use

• 18:52Speaker 04

their kitchen, or what, it was like, I can't use the kitchen, you know?

• 18:55Connor Wood?

  Oh my.

• 18:56Speaker 04

So, I get it, but I, I found it so fascinating that I, I did enjoy it, but, but yes, where am I?

• 19:03Connor Wood?

  Were there times you forgot?

• 19:04Speaker 04

  No.

• 19:05Connor Wood?

  Oh, you'd never forget?

• 19:06Speaker 04

Oh god, no. Also, my, as you know from my special, my titties were...

• 19:09Brooke Averick?

  They didn't let you forget.

• 19:10Speaker 04

And, and I walk you through, like, I got big titties young, and, um, they've sort of been, like, leading me around the world, like, and organizing my existence, um... But then when I was pregnant, I was like drowning in my titties. They were choking me out. They were, they were up here, as I tell you, they were hitting my chin.

• 19:30Speaker 04

So I couldn't forget because I couldn't breathe because my titties were choking me out.

• 19:35Brooke Averick?

Wow. And these are things like they just don't tell you?

• 19:39Speaker 04

  Nobody tells you anything.

• 19:40Brooke Averick?

  No one tells you anything.

• 19:41Speaker 04

Systematically unlearning, systematically keeping women from knowing our own bodies so that we don't realize how powerful we are. Why don't we know anything about our bodies?

• 19:52Brooke Averick?

I learned so much just from babes and your special, which obviously I'm so glad I did and you are truly doing the Lord's work, but like I should have learned that

• 20:01Speaker 04

  100%.

• 20:02Brooke Averick?

  So long ago.

• 20:03Speaker 04

As you saw in my special, I puked foam.

• 20:06Brooke Averick?

I wanted to ask you about the puking foam.

• 20:08Speaker 04

And then I tell my, my mother, I'm all worried thinking she's gonna really give a shit. And she's like, oh no, I did that too. I was like, but you didn't tell me?

• 21:16Connor Wood?

I think we're all puking foam. Wow.

• 21:19Speaker 04

  What do you mean?

• 21:20Connor Wood?

No, that was just kind of what your mom, to me, that's when you said like, "Yeah, we're all, we're all puking foam. We just don't talk about it."

• 21:26Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 21:27Brooke Averick?

Did you ever figure out what the foam was?

• 21:30Speaker 04

I think it's like, um, just like pregnancy bile. I don't know. I don't know. Like weird pregnancy latte puke.

• 21:38Brooke Averick?

  Oh.

• 21:39Speaker 04

  Love.

• 21:40Brooke Averick?

And I also didn't know about birthing the placenta, which feels like a big thing that I should know.

• 21:48Speaker 04

Girl, so this is a thing from Babes, my movie with Michelle Buteau, also on Hulu and maybe Disney Plus, but definitely on Hulu. Yeah, as I was writing that movie with Joshua Benowitz, who had his, uh, he and his wife had their baby, his wife had their baby, um, just a couple of months before I had mine. We were like, that was a crazy part that we didn't know. His wife is in, in women's health. She's in reproductive justice and women's health. And we just didn't even know. And it's like, um, hard because you're pushing something. It's as heavy as a baby.

• 22:20Connor Wood?

We, we did a little segment because we really pride ourselves on transparency here on the podcast and not knowing what seems to be, should be basic knowledge.

• 22:30Speaker 04

  I love it.

• 22:31Connor Wood?

And we go through it and we learn these things.

• 22:33Speaker 04

  I'm so with you.

• 22:34Connor Wood?

And we had no shock because it started with us. Cause I, we'd started the conversation around placentas because people, like according to Kardashian, had, had created supplements, placenta supplements. And I was like, should I take those? I'm always, I keep an open mind.

• 22:47Speaker 04

  I love it.

• 22:48Connor Wood?

And turns out no, I would, I would not receive any benefit from eating placenta.

• 22:52Speaker 04

  Oh, really?

• 22:53Connor Wood?

From consuming someone else's placenta? Nothing there.

• 22:55Speaker 04

  That honestly surprises me.

• 22:56Connor Wood?

I, and me, and me as well.

• 22:58Speaker 04

I kept my placenta and made them ice cubes and put them in my smoothies.

• 23:04Brooke Averick?

  Whoa.

• 23:06Connor Wood?

  Okay.

• 23:07Brooke Averick?

  I hadn't.

• 23:09Connor Wood?

This is a B and C exclusive right now, I feel like.

• 23:11Brooke Averick?

Do you have to like blend, blend it? I don't even think I know what a placenta looks like.

• 23:16Speaker 04

It looks like a slab of meat. It looks like an organ.

• 23:19Brooke Averick?

  Wow.

• 23:19Speaker 04

Um, and a cool woman named Wendy, uh, took it.

• 23:25Brooke Averick?

  Okay.

• 23:26Speaker 04

And then did what she did with it and put it into like an ice cube tray. And then I would put it in my smoothie and I didn't taste it or anything like that.

• 23:33Brooke Averick?

  Wow.

• 23:34Speaker 04

But I was like, I made.

• 23:35Brooke Averick?

  You made that?

• 23:36Speaker 04

So I might as well benefit from them.

• 23:39Brooke Averick?

  Wow. And you know?

• 23:40Speaker 04

Rockin', right? Like fucking hard fucking core. And she did a whole thing.

• 23:45Connor Wood?

  Lazy?

• 23:45Speaker 04

Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's, it's amazing and it's, it is worth, um, being in wonder of, and I appreciate your.

• 23:52Connor Wood?

Oh, my God. No, I, I lose words when we, well.

• 23:55Speaker 04

  Oh, I love it.

• 23:56Brooke Averick?

  Magic.

• 23:57Connor Wood?

  It is. It's human magic.

• 23:58Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 23:59Connor Wood?

And I do feel like, I know we talked about Harry Potter. There's so many corridors and things in Harry Potter. I'm like, how did you guys not know that there was like a massive three-headed dog in that room? And it's like, for the same way about the placenta, that's our massive three-headed, three-headed dog that's just like, you create in your body. Like how, where was that?

• 24:13Speaker 04

I've never seen or read any of it, so I have no idea what you're talking about.

• 24:19Brooke Averick?

I know about Voldemort. You what?

• 24:22Connor Wood?

  I just, sorry.

• 24:23Brooke Averick?

You got a kick? A little kick.

• 24:24Connor Wood?

I'm sorry. I'm on a Harry Potter kick.

• 24:26Speaker 04

Oh, oh, I thought you meant from a baby.

• 24:29Connor Wood?

I did have a green smoothie this morning, so I'm sure there will be a little kick at some point.

• 24:32Brooke Averick?

  Voldemort's a thing, right?

• 24:34Speaker 04

  Voldemort is a thing.

• 24:35Brooke Averick?

  And that's evil.

• 24:36Speaker 04

  Reef finds?

• 24:38Brooke Averick?

  Yes.

• 24:39Speaker 04

That's what I know of Harry Potter.

• 24:40Brooke Averick?

  That's.

• 24:40Speaker 04

And of course, um, the three children who are now grownups.

• 24:45Connor Wood?

  Right.

• 24:45Brooke Averick?

Yes. But, yeah, just like watching those, it's just like, that's, this is really truly nothing compared to what happens in a woman's body. It's just like.

• 24:53Speaker 04

Totally, absolutely fake and fantasy. And it's like, why are we focusing on this?

• 24:57Brooke Averick?

  Completely.

• 24:57Speaker 04

What's happening, where we come from. It's not like, it's not like one, you have to be the person who births to enjoy the wonder of it. We come from this, which is crazy.

• 25:08Brooke Averick?

Did you know that you were technically, and I saw this on TikTok, so take it with a grain of salt, but also I don't see how it's not true. You were in your grandmother's stomach. Because your mom had all of the eggs that she was ever going to have.

• 25:24Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 25:24Brooke Averick?

  When she was in there.

• 25:25Connor Wood?

  Oh my god.

• 25:25Speaker 04

  And by stomach, uterus.

• 25:27Brooke Averick?

Uterus, of course, that is what I meant, yes.

• 25:30Speaker 04

  Right.

• 25:30Brooke Averick?

  Yes.

• 25:30Speaker 04

  Stomach would be bad.

• 25:31Brooke Averick?

That would be, that would be.

• 25:32Speaker 04

  That would be bad.

• 25:33Brooke Averick?

  That would be bad.

• 25:33Speaker 04

  You'd be pooping eggs.

• 25:34Brooke Averick?

  That would be horrible.

• 25:35Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:35Brooke Averick?

  Uterus.

• 25:36Speaker 04

But that's right, so my baby had all her eggs when she was born, so if she chooses to have children in the future, I had those eggs in my womb.

• 25:50Connor Wood?

  Oh my god, not sorry.

• 25:51Speaker 04

  That's crazy.

• 25:52Connor Wood?

  Let me say you.

• 25:52Brooke Averick?

You're already very close with your potential future grandchildren.

• 25:56Speaker 04

  Come on, I'm obsessed.

• 25:58Connor Wood?

  You're one of them.

• 25:59Speaker 04

  I'm obsessed with them.

• 26:00Brooke Averick?

  Me too.

• 26:00Connor Wood?

Are you gonna be like mama bear? That's as far as I can go. Does anyone else know what I mean? Like mama bears unite.

• 26:10Connor Wood?

I don't know how to explain it, like it's like a really online term. I don't know how.

• 26:13Brooke Averick?

Mama bears unite is an online term?

• 26:15Connor Wood?

Well, so basically one time I said, don't give your babies an iPad, like have some respect, just give them a Benadryl like a good parent. You know, when you're at the airport. I got attacked by the mama bears. I was joking, very, felt like it was clear. Don't give your newborn a Benadryl. Give him a little whiskey like they used to, but I also a joke mama bears. But the mama bears are like this, a really aggressive, they don't really mess around with their kids. Health nut.

• 26:46Connor Wood?

Community of people online that are like, do you know what I'm talking about?

• 26:49Speaker 04

I mean, I remember when you did that.

• 26:52Connor Wood?

  When you did that.

• 26:53Speaker 04

Did you get pissed? Did I get dragged into it?

• 26:56Brooke Averick?

Um, I kind of just sat there and took it in.

• 27:01Brooke Averick?

Nodded and I mean, I under, you know, it's, it's tough when you're, I see both, I see both communities. I see you as the comedian trying out new material. And I see the mama bears.

• 27:16Brooke Averick?

  Wanting to protect.

• 27:17Connor Wood?

Right. Well, I want to be clear. I was not giving anyone else's children Benadryl as well. I was just doing a thing like you're not putting AirPods in your children's ears as they play Cocamelon on the flight out loud. So maybe a Benadryl would be.

• 27:34Speaker 04

  Cocamelon is really bad.

• 27:35Brooke Averick?

  Is it?

• 27:35Connor Wood?

  Cocamelon.

• 27:36Speaker 04

Bad Cocamelon. It is designed to distract children and hold their attention in visually and visually dangerous ways that genuinely destroys parts of their brains. It's made by AI and the system in which it is made is not a good one to work in. So Brittany Brooke also mentioned Cocamelon. Are you guys young enough that you were exposed to Cocamelon?

• 28:01Connor Wood?

Like not as a child, but I do. It does suck me in if it's on and I'm near children.

• 28:06Brooke Averick?

Sesame Street. That's great. Okay. That's good stuff. Okay. But Cocamelon is literally dangerous for brain health.

• 28:13Connor Wood?

I believe it. It's like mush. It's like.

• 28:16Speaker 04

Yeah. It'll like if the moment a baby's about to get distracted, it explodes color over here. It's truly like crack or like a drug, like a bad drug for kids. So let's just put that message out that.

• 28:29Brooke Averick?

  That's good.

• 28:29Speaker 04

  Don't show your children Cocamelon.

• 28:32Brooke Averick?

  Okay, great.

• 28:33Connor Wood?

  Cocamelon is.

• 28:33Speaker 04

Mama Bear. So what are you asking me?

• 28:35Brooke Averick?

  That's a good question.

• 28:37Speaker 04

The other question I have to ask you is, do you guys know what the like the wellness to alt right pipeline is?

• 28:44Brooke Averick?

  We're very familiar.

• 28:45Connor Wood?

Yes, we are very, very well versed.

• 28:47Speaker 04

Are the Mama Bears part of that?

• 28:49Connor Wood?

I would say they're teetering on being so in their ways that now they're not listening to professionals. That's what I'll say.

• 28:57Speaker 04

Yeah. So yes, they're on that pipeline. Yeah. So then I guess I would say you were just making a joke and let it roll off your shoulders.

• 29:03Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 29:04Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 29:04Connor Wood?

Do you, do you show your daughter any like any? iPad content or anything like that? I don't know.

• 29:10Speaker 04

  Um, like on a flight.

• 29:12Connor Wood?

  Like Bluey?

• 29:13Speaker 04

We'll do like, yeah, we have, we watch TV. But I like when it's further away. So there's a world around the entertainment that she's remembering. She's not allowed to hold a phone. We stopped that.

• 29:27Brooke Averick?

  Wow.

• 29:28Speaker 04

We had to sort of, uh, work that out. But it was like, no, like it's, it makes your world too, in my opinion, it makes my kids world too small. And I don't want her to hold even a phone.

• 29:38Connor Wood?

  Right.

• 29:38Speaker 04

But for the iPad, she can definitely FaceTime family. And, you know, even on long drives, on drives, we're like stuck in like talk, which is nice. And we'll listen to music, flights, maybe. But we watch, um, truly plenty of TV, but, uh, longer storylines. And we also try to talk about it as it's happening. So it's an activity we're engaging in. Sometimes I walk away to go fold the laundry or whatever, or grab the laundry to then fold next to her. But, um, yeah, I'm really, I want to limit short form content.

• 30:16Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 30:16Speaker 04

And I think that, um, discussing character arcs is useful.

• 30:22Brooke Averick?

  Mm-hmm.

• 30:23Speaker 04

  Can be useful.

• 30:25Brooke Averick?

I was watching Sesame Street the other day, actually. There was a segment where Andrew Garfield was talking about the grief that he's experienced.

• 30:34Speaker 04

  I know.

• 30:35Brooke Averick?

With losing his mother. And I, I mean, hysterically like sobbing. And I think that was so powerful. And I think such, such a gift for children to be able to watch something like that.

• 30:50Speaker 04

  That was so beautiful.

• 30:52Brooke Averick?

So beautiful. So I feel comfortable saying I'm pro Sesame Street. Does that sound right?

• 30:57Speaker 04

  Hundred percent.

• 30:58Brooke Averick?

  Okay.

• 30:58Speaker 04

  One hundred percent.

• 30:59Connor Wood?

They've nailed it. Sesame Street nailed it. I also think there's a lot of programs like that, that now, when I look back, I'm like, oh my God, double messaging, like the parents are sitting here and like, I just got a new message from this, this piece of content that I saw hundreds of times as a kid that I was like, that's fun. And then I'm like,

• 31:17Connor Wood?

SpongeBob was a big one for me where I'm like, oh my god, that is such a deeper message. Yes.

• 31:21Speaker 04

Oh, see, like, I watched SpongeBob. I was in high school and I was like, um, using weed at the time. And it was more just like funny and silly, but I never got a deeper message, but I haven't really revisited it.

• 31:34Brooke Averick?

What kind of deeper messages are you getting?

• 31:36Connor Wood?

I might need to look back and make sure that I'm thinking of SpongeBob. I did have a panic attack during that new animated movie, Inside Out, or like the emotion one, fully about death. No, thank you. I like started thinking about it too hard and I'm sitting in. Wasn't it about death? Soul.

• 31:52Brooke Averick?

  Oh, soul.

• 31:54Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 31:54Brooke Averick?

Oh, I kind of wish that I had learned about that young and that we talked about it so that it wasn't so scary.

• 32:02Connor Wood?

I mean, it just, it freaked me out, the nothingness that they portray in that movie, which is like so fun for this little like blob of animation, blue color, like really sweet. But then as an adult, you're like, oh my god, he's dead. He's so dead.

• 32:16Speaker 04

  Were you high?

• 32:17Connor Wood?

  No.

• 32:17Brooke Averick?

  No question.

• 32:18Connor Wood?

Well, if I would have been high, I would have, I think, caught on fire.

• 32:22Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 32:23Connor Wood?

  I'm serious.

• 32:23Speaker 04

I li- I enjoyed Soul, but Inside Out 2, uh, did you guys see it?

• 32:27Brooke Averick?

  Mm-mm, not yet.

• 32:29Speaker 04

I was, it, it's so good. Inside Out 1 is so good. Inside Out 2 was so good. I was sobbing. It's about a teen- uh, Riley, the main character, is a teenager now, or like a tween. And, um, it's about anxiety and I was, I so related to it. I was uncontrollably sobbing. My daughter was sitting on my lap and she, I was sobbing so hard. She goes like this. She goes,

• 32:56Connor Wood?

  Get a grip.

• 32:58Speaker 04

And I was like, I know, I know. You know, like I, it was, I was sobbing. She was like, you know, misty eyed. My husband was like misty eyed, tearing up, but I was sobbing. It was so good and such a relea- like such a great container for a release of emotions.

• 33:14Brooke Averick?

Do you ever get high to watch those types of movies?

• 33:17Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 33:18Brooke Averick?

I wanted to ask you about like being high and being a mother and mothering at the same time. Do you, how does that impact mothering, I guess? Because when I smoke, and I know everyone has a different experience, everything just seems so, I guess, magical and like elevated. Do you have that experience while smoking and mothering? I'm saying that like drinking and driving, but I mean like positive connotation, smoking and mothering?

• 33:46Speaker 04

For sure. I don't really, um, I smoke a little. I do. Uh, little hits, as you saw in Human Magic, and blow it out the hood fan above the stove.

• 33:56Brooke Averick?

  Right.

• 33:58Connor Wood?

I do that and I live alone.

• 33:59Speaker 04

Yeah. Um, like the first and foremost is like, it is so trippy. I am so like tripping balls and in amazement with the magic of my daughter unfolding before my eyes that like I don't really, um, it's not so much like this decision. It like kind of either happens or doesn't. It's not, I'm not so organized around the weed. What I'm organized around is like just turning off my phone and stopping working and turning my brain off so I can be present.

• 34:31Speaker 04

But I would say also like becoming a parent is like an incredibly effective way to learn your limitations and to accept them. So I don't like, I wouldn't, um, get high and go outside with her. I can't handle that shit. You know what I mean?

• 34:48Connor Wood?

  Aligned.

• 34:49Speaker 04

But like to like get a little high and watch something. Yeah. Or like take a bath. It's like, oh, I could, and then I'm not rushing to get out.

• 34:56Brooke Averick?

  Right.

• 34:56Speaker 04

You know, I'm like a little high and you know, yeah.

• 34:59Connor Wood?

I have never related to anything more than when you said, I have earned every time I feel chill on weed because I earned that with the first 10 minutes being like pushing off a panic attack.

• 35:09Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 35:10Connor Wood?

I think I said it in way too many words, but you were like, my chill session when I am high is an earned one.

• 35:15Speaker 04

I'll give it to you succinctly, my friend Connor. In Human Magic, I reflect on of the thousands of times I've gotten high in my life, I have never once gotten high and immediately chilled. I have exclusively gotten high, had a panic attack, and then earned my chill. Have you ever gotten high, had the panic attack, and then not earned the chill and just kept going with the panic attack?

• 35:44Brooke Averick?

  Oh, um.

• 35:47Speaker 04

I mean, no, I think you, I, maybe I would earn it more violently.

• 35:52Connor Wood?

  Chill out.

• 35:53Speaker 04

Like, you eventually get there, but it's like, how, how hard is it to get there? It's nice when it's like gentler, right? Like, the more even, if you're just like, ooh, I'm a little nervous, oh, it's okay, it's okay. But if you're nervous and you're like, what are you, a fucking idiot? Are you a loser that you can't just chill out? You know, and then-

• 36:07Connor Wood?

You're gonna die one day, by the way.

• 36:09Speaker 04

  Yeah, what'd you say?

• 36:10Connor Wood?

No, that was, that was my own conversations that I-

• 36:13Speaker 04

You'll die one day. Oh, you're afraid of death, which makes sense. You know what I mean? That, that makes sense. That's-

• 36:17Connor Wood?

  We, we both-

• 36:18Speaker 04

  Perfectly normal.

• 36:19Connor Wood?

We both talk. I, I have a dog who's not with me right now. He's, I just finished a comedy tour, so he's been with my parents while I was touring. And it was really nice to be a little high in my house and like have the dog, because he's like a safety blanket.

• 36:33Speaker 04

That is insane to see an animal, like, to have an animal jump up on your bed after a gummy.

• 36:38Connor Wood?

Well, having, having lived with a dog for so long and then getting a little bit high and then being like,

• 36:46Connor Wood?

he's on my house, and I'm like, what, what were those noises 10 minutes ago?

• 36:50Speaker 04

  He wasn't in the house?

• 36:51Connor Wood?

No, because then, you know, I get a little high, I convince myself, I'm like, I start hearing things like, I'm behind you! Like, I'm like, you know, I start hearing-

• 36:58Speaker 04

  What are you smoking?

• 36:59Connor Wood?

I'm, I'm only doing edibles, but I'll convince myself.

• 37:02Speaker 04

You know what's like crazy too is like, I, um, I started like really smoking when I was about 17. And like, I like, lost my damn mind at times. Especially in college, when I was like, had all this pressure on myself. I wanted to pursue comedy, get into comedy.

• 37:18Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 37:19Speaker 04

What the fuck am I doing at college? College was so uncomfortable, NYU, like, everything was so intense. And weed can be really powerful, and I, you know, just wanna warn ya.

• 37:31Connor Wood?

Well, I think weed is different now, too. I think that the weed-

• 37:33Speaker 04

  Yeah. Not your grandmother's weed.

• 37:35Connor Wood?

It is not your grandmother's weed.

• 37:36Speaker 04

It's like, there's no schwaggy weed to be found. And sometimes you want that, you know?

• 37:40Connor Wood?

Who knew that your grandmother would have you inside of her before your mother was born?

• 37:45Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 37:45Connor Wood?

Knowing that you were gonna be smoking Delta 8 in 2024.

• 37:49Speaker 04

You do have to be careful. Weed is, um, really intense these days, and we live in such an addictive culture. I've started getting this messaging about- Um, yeah, that like weed is more potent than it maybe should be.

• 38:01Brooke Averick?

Yeah, and there's like added, I don't know, I mean, I'm, I'm kind of talking out of my ass, but I think there's just like more added.

• 38:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 38:10Brooke Averick?

  Materials.

• 38:11Speaker 04

  Mm hmm.

• 38:11Brooke Averick?

Also, bad transition, but another question. Do you feel like weed inspires you creatively? Like, do you smoke and write?

• 38:22Speaker 04

I can't really actually write. There were times in the Broad Cities, Broad Cities, there were times in the Broad City writers' room that, um, we'd maybe be stuck and I'd get a little high and we'd go for a walk.

• 38:36Brooke Averick?

  Mm hmm.

• 38:37Connor Wood?

  Remove yourself.

• 38:38Speaker 04

So writing regarding, um, getting movement and a different perspective, yes, but I can't write and I, I can't get high and sit and write, but I used to pretend that I could.

• 38:49Brooke Averick?

Yeah, I was like, it's part of my process.

• 38:51Speaker 04

No, it's not part of my process. It's like literally impossible for me.

• 38:54Brooke Averick?

That's actually a really good suggestion to, to do a walk instead of trying to force yourself.

• 38:58Speaker 04

  Oh, yes.

• 38:59Brooke Averick?

  Like.

• 38:59Speaker 04

Because like half of writing is stepping away from the writing.

• 39:02Brooke Averick?

  That's so true.

• 39:03Speaker 04

Which is a hard thing to, it's again, this like pressure that I, I sense you guys, and especially you have on yourself and you want to stick with the thing. And it's like, in fact, it is related to death. You know what I mean? Like, life is, good, good, good. Like, life is nothing without death. It wouldn't be life.

• 39:21Connor Wood?

  Right.

• 39:21Speaker 04

And it's like, writing is nothing without like stepping away from it.

• 39:25Connor Wood?

I had this professor in college who I seriously had, have never hated any, I don't hate that many people.

• 39:33Speaker 04

  Oh, my gosh.

• 39:34Connor Wood?

But he just had this like power complex where he would grade our creative ideas and give them a letter grade or a number grade. And I was like, I hate you. This is a good idea.

• 39:46Speaker 04

  How, go ahead, sorry.

• 39:47Connor Wood?

No, no, but the one thing that he gave me that I retained really well was you need an outlet that has nothing to do with what you do professionally.

• 39:57Speaker 04

  Right.

• 39:57Connor Wood?

So that you remove yourself and then you can step back in and have flow state.

• 40:00Speaker 04

Right. Perhaps that is what my child is for me because I like don't really have hobbies. You know, and I don't have a dog. I'm also like, I really have been enjoying like, um, doing, uh, skincare, you know, I just like.

• 40:14Brooke Averick?

  A hobby.

• 40:15Speaker 04

And I'm like, is this my hobby?

• 40:16Brooke Averick?

  Yes, that's, that's a totally valid hobby.

• 40:19Speaker 04

It's, some people really consider it art.

• 40:22Brooke Averick?

Truly. And I love watching videos of skincare too.

• 40:26Speaker 04

I know, I know, I know. It's like, um, but it's true. Like you need to step away from the thing for sure.

• 40:34Connor Wood?

Yeah, we also struggle, struggle with finding hobbies because every time I find a hobby, I'm like, how can I monetize this?

• 40:40Speaker 04

  I know.

• 40:40Connor Wood?

You know, it's like, no, no, no, no, just enjoy it. Like put your phone away.

• 40:45Connor Wood?

You can't monetize walks really unless I bring my phone and I make a.

• 40:47Speaker 04

That's my thing. That's my thing. It's like walking and talking. I just love talking. I love like getting dinner with friends, cooking, like your basic shit.

• 40:55Connor Wood?

  That's a hobby.

• 40:56Speaker 04

  Working out.

• 40:56Brooke Averick?

And talking is, is storytelling and that's a hobby.

• 41:00Connor Wood?

And then you're gonna record it and make a podcast.

• 41:02Speaker 04

It's truly, it's hard to not keep feeding the cycle and to pause from it. It really is.

• 41:07Connor Wood?

  Especially like the entertainment.

• 41:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 41:09Connor Wood?

Situation. It's like, okay, this could be a video. This could be a TikTok. Like we could use this to promote something else. And it's like, shut up, shut up.

• 41:16Speaker 04

And it does so organically feed into your life flow.

• 41:19Connor Wood?

  Right.

• 41:20Speaker 04

I totally relate. Do you guys turn your phones off?

• 41:22Connor Wood?

  Oh God, no.

• 41:24Speaker 04

  Mm hmm.

• 41:24Connor Wood?

  But never.

• 41:25Brooke Averick?

There, I need, I think my cat thinks my phone is a part of my body.

• 41:32Speaker 04

Your cat is kind of correct.

• 41:35Connor Wood?

It changed the way that my pinky is shaped.

• 41:37Speaker 04

Yeah, it is changing our bodies and becoming part of it.

• 41:40Connor Wood?

  Have a shelf on it.

• 41:41Speaker 04

Like even to, even when you fall asleep.

• 41:44Brooke Averick?

  Alana, it's under my pillow.

• 41:46Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah. Horrible.

• 42:50Connor Wood?

  King's Hawaiian Cinnamon Swirl Bite?

• 42:51Speaker 06

Uh, Taylor Hansen? Sure, I'll try one. Mmm.

• 42:57Speaker 06

Hey, let's get back to work, please. But Taylor Hansen's making my day way better with these new soft and swirly King's Hawaiian Cinnamon Bites. Taylor Hansen? Nice.

• 43:05Connor Wood?

  Try one.

• 43:06Speaker 06

  Mmm.

• 43:10Speaker 07

King's Hawaiian Cinnamon Bites. There's nothing like it.

• 43:18Speaker 04

There's like this thing we human beings have still at this point called will.

• 43:26Speaker 04

  Free will.

• 43:26Brooke Averick?

  I might have lost my.

• 43:27Speaker 04

Free will, but I don't think so. I see a human spark that is just shining bright. And it's like, if you can just turn it off, as you saw in in human magic, that's like truly what I consider Shabbat. I turn my phone off on Friday night and I'm like, I'm a rabbi pretty much. And this is Shabbat and I recommend it.

• 43:46Connor Wood?

Shabbat shalom. I'm gonna do that as well.

• 43:48Brooke Averick?

I should be observing Shabbat and that feels like a beautiful way.

• 43:51Speaker 04

Once a day to turn it off, like to go to sleep is what I do. And then also when I can, Friday night, Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown. And it gives me peace and reminds me of a time at which my phone was not an extension of my consciousness.

• 44:06Brooke Averick?

Yeah, sometimes I just get scared, like what if something happened?

• 44:09Speaker 04

  Totally.

• 44:09Brooke Averick?

Maybe I should get a landline.

• 44:11Speaker 04

  Totally.

• 44:11Connor Wood?

Maybe, maybe I should get a landline as well. We can chat.

• 44:14Brooke Averick?

Maybe we should bring back landlines.

• 44:16Connor Wood?

Or AOL Messenger, although we'd have to do that on a phone.

• 44:19Brooke Averick?

I guess you don't have to turn off your computer.

• 44:21Connor Wood?

I would like to be able to. Set an away message on my iMessage, be like, hey, I'm observing.

• 44:26Brooke Averick?

  It's Shabbat.

• 44:26Connor Wood?

Shabbat, so find someone else for this.

• 44:31Brooke Averick?

I actually just remembered, speaking of Shabbat, a story that I learned at Hebrew school. I actually might have told this before.

• 44:38Connor Wood?

  Hit us again.

• 44:40Brooke Averick?

That completely like cured my fear of death. If anyone wants to hear it.

• 44:45Speaker 04

  Please.

• 44:45Connor Wood?

  The Jell-O theory.

• 44:47Brooke Averick?

He told me that, and I actually don't remember exactly how he told the story, but basically there's a mother who has twins in her uterus. And the twins are about to come out into this world. And they're basically like, goodbye, it was nice, it was nice knowing you because that's the only life that they've ever known. And they think that they're essentially about to die. But really what's happening is that they're being born into this life. So basically, we're the twins now and we don't, we don't know what's coming. And that healed me.

• 45:25Speaker 04

  I love that.

• 45:25Connor Wood?

  That's beautiful.

• 45:26Brooke Averick?

  Thank you.

• 45:27Speaker 04

Some people refer to death as a transition.

• 45:28Brooke Averick?

  Yeah, it's a transition.

• 45:29Speaker 04

  And I appreciate it.

• 45:30Brooke Averick?

A transition out of, out of the womb.

• 45:32Connor Wood?

Never in my life did I think we would touch on death so many times with you here.

• 45:37Speaker 04

  It's, it's such a theme for you.

• 45:39Connor Wood?

  It is.

• 45:39Speaker 04

It is for everybody, but like, it's very interesting to me what's coming up for you.

• 45:43Connor Wood?

  I know.

• 45:44Speaker 04

  Sometimes talking about it helps.

• 45:46Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 45:46Speaker 04

And sometimes it hurts. You let us know where you stand right now and how we can help.

• 45:51Connor Wood?

How do you feel right now about death? I have a question for you, actually, another one. Do you feel, because I feel this way to my unborn children?

• 46:02Connor Wood?

That are just a twinkle in my eye right now, in my glazed over eye.

• 46:08Connor Wood?

Do you feel like you'll live vicariously, vicariously through your daughter at all? Like, I always wanted to be good at skiing, really. Guess who's gonna be skiing?

• 46:20Speaker 04

I'm sure that I will and, but I'm like, I'm definitely like, um, aware of the mistake of that. And trying so hard not to, um, project my past experiences onto her as her own.

• 46:39Connor Wood?

  Right.

• 46:41Speaker 04

So I definitely do already make that, it's a mistake, like, I consider it a mistake. I do already, but I'm working really hard not to. But you know what, like, I guess the thing, um,

• 46:54Brooke Averick?

That is really happening is that you're reliving your own experience. So that's kind of what I'm trying to do is like reflect on that and heal from the trauma that I've experienced. Rather than think it's about her because she's having her own whole thing.

• 47:09Connor Wood?

  Right.

• 47:09Brooke Averick?

But it is, it's definitely a practice.

• 47:14Connor Wood?

My mom made me do piano lessons for so long and I hated it. I hated it. I hated my teacher. I hated going to her house. It smelled so bad. The lights were off. I was like, this is just like not.

• 47:26Brooke Averick?

  The lights were off?

• 47:27Connor Wood?

The lights were off. I was like.

• 47:28Brooke Averick?

  That's scary.

• 47:29Connor Wood?

Theater teacher. So it was kind of just, I know.

• 47:32Brooke Averick?

Honestly makes it riskier to me.

• 47:33Connor Wood?

You justify a lot of things.

• 47:34Brooke Averick?

Yeah. Turn the lights on, babe.

• 47:36Connor Wood?

Just flip them on because I could see the notes easier.

• 47:39Brooke Averick?

Because I'm a child and I'm alone in your house with you. Like inappropriate. Yeah.

• 47:42Connor Wood?

I agree. Hindsight's 50/50. But I, I'm sitting there and I'm, I'm learning this thing over and over and over again. And I was like, as soon as I'm allowed to stop doing this, I'm done. I'll never look at the piano again. I regret that. I want, I wish I did that. But my mom has a piano in her house that she's never learned. And it's like, oh my God, I was learning it for you.

• 48:00Brooke Averick?

It's also like, girl, get a piano lesson.

• 48:02Connor Wood?

  Get a piano lesson.

• 48:03Brooke Averick?

That line, it's like, dad, it's, that's your dream.

• 48:05Connor Wood?

  That's from High School Musical.

• 48:06Speaker 04

  Oh, that makes sense.

• 48:07Brooke Averick?

That's so funny. Does Zac Efron say that?

• 48:09Connor Wood?

  Dad, that's not my dream.

• 48:10Brooke Averick?

Zac doesn't say, I would know if Zac said that.

• 48:12Connor Wood?

  He would, sorry.

• 48:13Brooke Averick?

  It's okay.

• 48:14Connor Wood?

  I think it's just like a typical.

• 48:15Speaker 04

I think it's a typical like coming of age.

• 48:17Brooke Averick?

Dad, that's your dream. I love that. Oh, fuck. And I really like, I have thought deeply about like, if I have a son and he wants to do sports over musical theater, like that's something I'll have to support and it will be.

• 48:30Connor Wood?

  Gut wrenching.

• 48:31Brooke Averick?

It will be gut wrenching, but I am prepared to, I'm prepared to go to the soccer games.

• 48:36Speaker 04

And you're gonna have to like create a musical theater experience for yourself to like work it out.

• 48:40Brooke Averick?

  Exactly.

• 48:41Connor Wood?

You could listen to Dancing Through Life.

• 48:42Brooke Averick?

Yeah, I can live my dream and let my son live his.

• 48:46Connor Wood?

  Totally.

• 48:46Brooke Averick?

Yeah, that's something that we can do. You can still learn to play the piano now.

• 48:51Connor Wood?

You're empowering me right here on our Kelly Clarkson Wait for her collection chairs.

• 48:54Brooke Averick?

Yeah, and the costumes too. Don't forget.

• 48:56Speaker 04

But I thought your chairs weren't the Kelly Clarkson ones.

• 48:58Connor Wood?

I mix it up every time and Brooke, Brooke gentle parents me to remind me, actually, I think you've kind of gentle parent given up.

• 49:05Brooke Averick?

No, I did. I just flagged it. I'll never give up on reminding you, these are the original customs.

• 49:11Connor Wood?

  Right.

• 49:11Brooke Averick?

  And a lot is.

• 49:12Speaker 04

  These are really custom chairs?

• 49:14Brooke Averick?

Is it? These are, these are custom?

• 49:15Speaker 04

  Gorge. Oh my god.

• 49:17Brooke Averick?

We really were excited about the library look.

• 49:19Speaker 04

  High end, beautiful.

• 49:20Brooke Averick?

  Very high end.

• 49:21Speaker 04

Good job. Very grown. I like to say that's some grown up shit.

• 49:23Brooke Averick?

  That is grown up shit.

• 49:25Speaker 04

  Really? Wow. Custom chairs?

• 49:27Connor Wood?

  Custom chairs?

• 49:28Speaker 04

  For your YouTube show?

• 49:30Brooke Averick?

For our, for our grown up.

• 49:31Speaker 04

  That's some adult.

• 49:31Brooke Averick?

For our grown up YouTube show. That's very true.

• 49:34Connor Wood?

  It is.

• 49:35Brooke Averick?

That's a good thing to flag, because it's like, sometimes the grown up things fly under the radar and you don't even realize.

• 49:39Speaker 04

And they're being redefined, like, the grown up shit that, like, baby boomers and their parents, the greatest generation, lol, scripted as mature are such babyish fucking things. So absolutely keep redefining what adulthood is, because you are the thought leaders in the space.

• 49:57Brooke Averick?

That's so true. And I also think it's hard to feel like an adult, because our parents, I know my mom had already had me by the age that I am now. So it's hard to be like, oh, I'm a grown up, when my parents were like, so, quote unquote, ahead.

• 50:14Speaker 04

But that's like an external thing, you know what I mean? Like, growing up is actually an internal thing, which is separating from your mother.

• 50:20Brooke Averick?

  Yes. Yeah.

• 50:23Speaker 04

And knowing who you are. Like, you don't have to have a kid to do that.

• 50:27Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 50:28Connor Wood?

I love the tweets that are like, you're all moving at your own pa- like, everyone's moving at your own pace, and you're like, yeah. And then it's like, it's okay to wait until 32 to have a baby. And I'm like, okay, hold on.

• 50:39Brooke Averick?

  How about 40?

• 50:41Connor Wood?

Come on, come on now. You know what's crazy? I think, I think about this all the time. We talked about this one time. When I was watching Broad City for the first time, I was in college, and we were illegally streaming it and airplaying it. Or no, we had an HDMI cord, and we would dangle a laptop from the fireplace from, to the TV. And I was like, ah.

• 51:02Connor Wood?

Like they're, these girls are figuring it out and there's so much time to figure it out. And now I watch it back and I go, these girls are figuring, I watch it back still. These girls are figuring it out. And then you say, I mean, I don't know, I'm already 24. Oh my God. You were 24 in that show? Like, like your character, were you?

• 51:20Speaker 04

I was, um, uh, I was 27 when the show first aired.

• 51:27Connor Wood?

  Okay.

• 51:28Speaker 04

I was 22 when we started making the web series.

• 51:30Connor Wood?

  Okay.

• 51:31Speaker 04

I was 24 when we sold our first script to FX.

• 51:34Brooke Averick?

  Wow.

• 51:35Speaker 04

And then Comedy Central picked it up. I was 25. Well, made, committed to making the pilot and then it was on the air and I was 27.

• 51:47Brooke Averick?

Yeah. It's always interesting. Are you saying like you watch something and you're like, I have so much time? And then you watch it back when you're older and you're like, oh.

• 51:53Connor Wood?

Well, I didn't, yeah, I didn't catch when I was 18, watching for the first time.

• 51:57Speaker 04

  Right.

• 51:57Connor Wood?

  The age.

• 51:58Speaker 04

  Right.

• 51:58Connor Wood?

But now I think I'm so hyper aware of like where people are and like, I'm like, oh, they, they've just moved to the city. I don't know what age I thought I put on Broad City when I was 19, 18. But then now I look up, I look back and I'm like, oh my God, those are children.

• 52:14Speaker 04

Um, you know, notorious V I G, Biggie Smalls? He was 24 when he was killed.

• 52:21Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 52:22Speaker 04

When I was a kid, I thought he was like 50 years old.

• 52:25Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 52:26Speaker 04

And like, you know, um, systemically, like what he was talking about was way older than he should have had to deal with. He was 24 when he was killed. A literal like brilliant artistic kid.

• 52:39Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 52:39Brooke Averick?

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:40Speaker 04

  That is some crazy shit.

• 52:42Connor Wood?

  Couldn't rent a car.

• 52:43Speaker 04

Couldn't have rented a car. Yeah.

• 52:45Brooke Averick?

  Wise, wise beyond his years.

• 52:48Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 52:48Brooke Averick?

And so, yeah, age, age is a social construct.

• 52:50Speaker 04

It's so funny though, for you to think, for you to think of the Broad City girl as so old. Cause we were so, um, you know, like, um, the, the tip of the spear was that we were young and dumb. Well. In a fun way.

• 53:04Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 53:05Connor Wood?

  When you're 17, 18, you hear someone's 23 and you're like, what the fuck?

• 53:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 53:10Connor Wood?

  I'll never be 23.

• 53:11Speaker 04

We're smoking, we're fucking, we're living on our own.

• 53:14Connor Wood?

  Pass.

• 53:15Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 53:15Connor Wood?

  Like, you're about to die.

• 53:16Speaker 04

Yeah, I used to think that, like, I remember in like, second grade, I was like, looking ahead at fifth grade as the final year in elementary school and I was like, I'm not gonna make it.

• 53:25Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 53:26Brooke Averick?

I never saw my self past 11.

• 53:28Speaker 04

Hundred percent. Then when I was in sixth grade, I was like, I'm not gonna make it to high school. I will probably die, like, in eighth grade.

• 53:34Brooke Averick?

That's normal, because I also always felt that way.

• 53:37Speaker 04

I am wondering now if it's Jewish.

• 53:41Brooke Averick?

  That could very well be.

• 53:42Speaker 04

But you seem goyish and you seem very focused on death.

• 53:47Connor Wood?

I hang out Brooke a lot. Yeah, I think I've, I like, since I hung out with her, I got IBS from her. It's not even contagious. How's that work? I osmosis her IBS.

• 53:57Speaker 04

I, I get it. We, I had a dog, a Labrador, who wouldn't go in the rain. And I was like, I guess you're a Jewish dog?

• 54:03Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 54:04Speaker 04

Yeah, that was more nurture than nature.

• 54:05Brooke Averick?

All of our dogs have been severely mentally ill.

• 54:08Speaker 04

  Right?

• 54:09Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 54:09Speaker 04

  Right?

• 54:09Brooke Averick?

  Via mental illness.

• 54:10Speaker 04

Yeah, so I believe it. And I'm sorry about your IBS. You should try psyllium husks.

• 54:14Connor Wood?

  I think I'm-

• 54:14Brooke Averick?

  That.

• 54:16Speaker 04

Like fibrous husks of like, a grain that you mix with water and swallow and it helps like, bring fiber to your poops.

• 54:24Connor Wood?

So everyone on our podcast, which has somehow turned into like, a gastroenterology, whatever the word is, someone help me. I had a stroke, everyone's been keeping up with my stomach ache journey, which like, cause if you look back a year, you, two years, I was like, you guys are adults. Like, why do you have a stomach ache?

• 54:43Brooke Averick?

Well, when I met you, you weren't even comfortable talking about poop out loud.

• 54:49Connor Wood?

  Publicly.

• 54:51Speaker 04

Which is very related to death.

• 54:53Connor Wood?

  What?

• 54:54Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 54:55Connor Wood?

  What are you talking about?

• 54:56Speaker 04

Cause you poop when you die. Cause you poop when you die and it's also like-

• 54:59Brooke Averick?

  And when you give birth.

• 55:00Speaker 04

Yep, that's right. That's right. And it's sort of like about-

• 55:05Connor Wood?

Poop's coming in here, I'm gonna poop on the way out.

• 55:06Speaker 04

The waste that's like, gone from you. Like, you will be gone one day and also just-

• 55:13Speaker 04

  You know, disappear.

• 55:16Brooke Averick?

So poop's been a metaphor for death this whole time.

• 55:18Speaker 04

It is related to it. I didn't articulate it well.

• 55:20Brooke Averick?

  No, I.

• 55:21Speaker 04

  It's very related to death.

• 55:22Brooke Averick?

  I'm seeing you.

• 55:23Speaker 04

Like anal retention also. It's like you don't want to let go of your life. You might be holding on to life real hard.

• 55:29Connor Wood?

I heard you mention way at the beginning of the episode, your therapy practice.

• 55:33Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 55:35Connor Wood?

  Are you a therapist?

• 55:37Speaker 04

No, but I'm in a lot of therapy.

• 55:39Connor Wood?

  Okay.

• 55:39Speaker 04

I'm in a lot of it.

• 55:40Connor Wood?

  Practicing therapy with.

• 55:41Speaker 04

I'm in a lot of it.

• 55:42Connor Wood?

Because you just fully, like I caught on through the episode. I'm like, it's a lot of like intuition, just like all of these wise.

• 55:50Speaker 04

Well, also like I'm having this experience since into club and then also like I'm here doing all this like YouTube stuff and I'm and you know, lots of podcasts and I'm really

• 56:02Speaker 04

like confronting my cultural babies, which is what I consider you. And so I'm really reflecting on my Broad City journey artistically and creatively and I've developed, like I was saying, I've developed this like sort of practice of like each like sort of bucket in my life feeding itself from actual life and be, well, I won't say actual life. It's all my life, but like being and pausing productivity to like working on it because I need a lot of fucking help. Because I'm depressed and anxious by nature and then working on it so much that I can create about it and then releasing it, pooping it out and letting it just exit.

• 56:40Speaker 04

Like we will one day exit this world. So I'm just like really noticing your energy and relating to it and like sort of, yeah, relating to it.

• 56:48Connor Wood?

  Oh, my God.

• 56:49Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 56:49Connor Wood?

  That's really beautiful.

• 56:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 56:51Connor Wood?

Who would have known? We had a connection just via poop this whole time. Poop and death and there's only three true things in the world. Taxes, poop and death.

• 56:59Speaker 04

  Yeah, taxes, poop and death.

• 57:02Connor Wood?

  Everybody poops, everybody dies.

• 57:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 57:04Connor Wood?

That could be the follow up.

• 57:05Speaker 04

And not everybody does their taxes.

• 57:07Brooke Averick?

  Taxes, though.

• 57:09Connor Wood?

  Wow. Yeah.

• 57:12Connor Wood?

That's so damn true. You have something just that.

• 57:16Brooke Averick?

I have been, I, I don't know how to bring it back to pregnancy and uterus. But I was watching Babes again last night.

• 57:25Speaker 04

Oh, my goodness, Brooke. Thanks. I appreciate it. And I'm so moved. Like truly.

• 57:32Brooke Averick?

Like one of, one of my favorite movies. It's so good.

• 57:35Speaker 04

  Thank you so much.

• 57:36Brooke Averick?

But I, I learned, you know, two things from Babes. Water breaking.

• 57:41Speaker 04

  Uh huh.

• 57:42Brooke Averick?

I didn't know that it could be like a trickling and a misting. My understanding of water breaking was it's this big, dramatic moment. And now I'm learning you might not even feel it.

• 57:56Speaker 04

Yeah, in babes, I like go on and on about, you know, in the movies, it's this monsoon whoosh.

• 58:01Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 58:02Speaker 04

But it really can be trickling. It's, uh, I shouldn't give away someone else's, someone in my life who I work with had a monsoon whoosh of a water breaking. She's a publicist on somebody else's photo shoot. Like your water breaking on a white psych of your client's photo shoot. Yeah, how like crazy is that? But my water, I think, had to be broken at the hospital. Sometimes it's a trickle and you're like, what is that? And it's like, your water broke, you're in labor and somebody might not be feeling the contractions.

• 58:36Brooke Averick?

  Right.

• 58:36Speaker 04

So there's a variety of ways in which your water can break or not at all. And they have to break.

• 58:41Brooke Averick?

And now I'm wondering, what even is the water? That I should, like, that's something I should know.

• 58:45Speaker 04

You know, it was, no, you shouldn't know it. You have been, the entire world has been organized to make sure you don't know it. Don't beat yourself up for that. Yeah, like the whole.

• 58:56Brooke Averick?

But that's even just wild to, to think about.

• 58:59Speaker 04

The power structure we live in, which is now rising as global authoritarianism, is to make sure you don't know your own feelings and emotions because feelings are felt in the body. And so that you don't know how your body works. It's like really scary.

• 59:14Brooke Averick?

  That's really scary.

• 59:15Speaker 04

So why don't we know about this? I don't know. I mean, I do, lol, I just said it.

• 59:22Speaker 04

But your water breaking can be many things. There's also this thing called a mucal plug. Do you know about?

• 59:28Brooke Averick?

I might have heard of the mucal plug.

• 59:30Speaker 04

So that plugs up the water, I think. I think the water is, I don't know. I don't know.

• 59:35Brooke Averick?

Well, that's, that's something for me to learn later.

• 59:38Connor Wood?

  That's, we could even.

• 59:39Speaker 04

But it like unplugs and then the water comes out. So if you're, if you're like all plugged up.

• 59:45Brooke Averick?

  Feel the unplugging.

• 59:47Speaker 04

I don't, I don't think you'll feel it. It's also like, it's everything's so sensitive and wild and you can't even like see, you know what I mean? Underneath that it's like, it is helpful, or I found it helpful to have a partner for sure. And I was like, what's going on down there?

• 1:00:03Connor Wood?

  Check what's happening.

• 1:00:04Speaker 04

  Yeah, fully and truly.

• 1:00:05Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:05Speaker 04

  Fully and truly.

• 1:00:06Connor Wood?

Oh, my gosh, if that happened to me.

• 1:00:08Brooke Averick?

No, also one thing I was thinking about during Babes is that we talk so much about like, how big of a deal birthing is, but there's also all of the things that are so scary leading up to it.

• 1:00:21Speaker 04

  Mm.

• 1:00:21Brooke Averick?

And women are just like so brave, like the amnio, that's what it's called, right?

• 1:00:25Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:00:25Brooke Averick?

The size of that, like, that's the first time I'd ever seen.

• 1:00:28Connor Wood?

  What is that?

• 1:00:28Brooke Averick?

  It's, I, it's a test. It's a test?

• 1:00:32Speaker 04

Yeah, so if you have like a predisposition to genetic abnormalities, or if you're 35 or older, 35 or older is considered a geriatric.

• 1:00:42Brooke Averick?

  Geriatric.

• 1:00:43Speaker 04

  Pregnancy.

• 1:00:44Brooke Averick?

  Keyword.

• 1:00:44Speaker 04

  Uh, bitch.

• 1:00:46Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:47Speaker 04

Um, so because my character in Babes, Eden, named after my best friend Eden, Reese, shout out to Eden, oh, Davis, lol, I said her maiden name. Um, so my character Eden, uh, her partner is not available, let's say. And so they do this test, an amniocentesis, to, um, see if there are genetic abnormalities, because they can't also test the father. And it literally is like a cartoon one-foot needle that goes through the bellef, into my bellef. Do you guys know what's in powers?

• 1:01:21Brooke Averick?

  Yes.

• 1:01:21Speaker 04

  Okay, great.

• 1:01:22Brooke Averick?

  Yes.

• 1:01:22Speaker 04

Um, so it goes through the bellef.

• 1:01:25Connor Wood?

  Oh, my god.

• 1:01:25Speaker 04

And you go like to the placenta and then pull out like a sample so that you can genetically test those cells. But like, are you kidding me? That is so scary.

• 1:01:35Brooke Averick?

  Why aren't we talking about?

• 1:01:36Speaker 04

Why aren't we just congratulating women who've gotten an amniocentesis? Or congratulating pregnant people who've gotten an amniocentesis?

• 1:01:42Brooke Averick?

That's feeling as, that's feeling as, almost as big as the birth to me right now.

• 1:01:46Speaker 04

  Absolutely, absolutely.

• 1:01:48Brooke Averick?

And you'll definitely have to get that if you're Jewish, huh?

• 1:01:51Speaker 04

  Um.

• 1:01:51Brooke Averick?

  Sorry to.

• 1:01:52Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:01:53Brooke Averick?

  Viral.

• 1:01:53Speaker 04

If you're under 35 and your partner is available to do the testing, you won't.

• 1:01:58Connor Wood?

  I think it's funny.

• 1:01:59Brooke Averick?

  Okay.

• 1:01:59Connor Wood?

35 is a geriatric pregnancy for a woman, but the youngest you can run for president as a man, that's the youngest the president could be.

• 1:02:08Speaker 04

  Well, any, any gender.

• 1:02:11Connor Wood?

  I have to go.

• 1:02:15Speaker 04

We all live in this system Connor.

• 1:02:17Brooke Averick?

Connor, like what's scary is that I didn't even flag that.

• 1:02:19Speaker 04

Yeah. I had to just do a quick lap.

• 1:02:23Speaker 04

  How old is Ryan?

• 1:02:24Connor Wood?

Cause I'm sweating a little bit.

• 1:02:24Speaker 04

Thirty-six. Cool, I'm thirty-seven. Okay, so we're elder millennials and we just have more capacity to do critical thinking because we actually learned that in school, which I don't believe you did. So don't worry about it.

• 1:02:34Brooke Averick?

  Okay.

• 1:02:35Speaker 04

You're, we're all unfortunately locked into the system and you know, we use our free human will to rise up out of the system with awareness and then take action.

• 1:02:46Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:48Speaker 04

You just saw an incredibly qualified candidate who happened to be a woman lose. So no wonder you said that.

• 1:02:56Connor Wood?

  I'm programmed.

• 1:02:57Brooke Averick?

Do you have any advice in getting out of the system?

• 1:03:01Speaker 04

Um, yeah, reading, talking, learning about the history of this country.

• 1:03:10Speaker 04

Uh, the genocidal tactics employed in order to build this country. The history of Native Americans in this country, the history of African-Americans in this country. And then learning your own history. You know, um, in your own way, because it's like Hebrew school, we're taught a certain thing.

• 1:03:29Brooke Averick?

  Right.

• 1:03:30Speaker 04

But then to sort of seek out my own Jewish thought leaders.

• 1:03:35Speaker 04

Like Jon Stewart, for example, you know what I mean?

• 1:03:37Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:38Speaker 04

But I'm a Goldman, um, whatever, and Jewish artists and stuff.

• 1:03:45Speaker 04

Yeah, I would say American history, like learning real American history.

• 1:03:49Connor Wood?

Fascinating. I had never, I just read this tweet the other day.

• 1:03:52Speaker 04

You just read a tweet the other day?

• 1:03:53Connor Wood?

Read this tweet the other day. Cause I was, I was doing some reading. And someone said, I had never even considered Dr. Pepper to be a woman.

• 1:04:03Brooke Averick?

I thought you were gonna say a real doctor.

• 1:04:05Connor Wood?

  Hello.

• 1:04:05Brooke Averick?

  That's funny.

• 1:04:06Connor Wood?

  Me neither.

• 1:04:06Brooke Averick?

That's funny. And you know that riddle?

• 1:04:09Connor Wood?

  Oh, the riddle, of course.

• 1:04:10Brooke Averick?

  You know the riddle?

• 1:04:11Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:04:12Connor Wood?

Oh, well, we won't be able to tell you it because I don't know it. Do you know it?

• 1:04:16Brooke Averick?

Oh, it sounds like a riddle.

• 1:04:18Connor Wood?

  Should we pull it up?

• 1:04:20Brooke Averick?

No, I know it. It's like you're, hmm, yeah, no, I can do it. You're, okay, a kid, yeah, it's kind of morbid. A kid gets in a, in an accident. And, no, I don't know it. I'll be honest, I don't know it. I'm not afraid to admit it. Can we pull it up?

• 1:04:40Connor Wood?

  It's so

• 1:04:42Brooke Averick?

  It's defining of this generation.

• 1:04:45Speaker 04

And do you consider yourself zillennials?

• 1:04:49Connor Wood?

  I kind of abide by

• 1:04:52Brooke Averick?

  By law, you're a millennial.

• 1:04:53Connor Wood?

South Korea had given its citizens two years back during COVID, age-wise. They have allowed everyone to change their age, so I'm kind of using that technique, so.

• 1:05:03Speaker 04

South Korea allowed people to change their age?

• 1:05:05Connor Wood?

They allowed during COVID, they gave them two years back. Go ahead and change your

• 1:05:09Speaker 04

  On like their driver's licenses?

• 1:05:11Connor Wood?

  I believe so.

• 1:05:11Brooke Averick?

  I think like in law.

• 1:05:14Speaker 04

  That is creative.

• 1:05:15Connor Wood?

I'm loving that. I'm loving that. Why not three is what is my question.

• 1:05:20Brooke Averick?

But by birth year, we are technically millennials, but I definitely feel more aligned with.

• 1:05:27Speaker 04

I see what you're saying, like the years you lost. And what is your spacetime government age?

• 1:05:33Brooke Averick?

Spacetime government age, is that real life age?

• 1:05:35Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:05:36Brooke Averick?

  Or South Korean? Twenty-eight.

• 1:05:37Speaker 04

  Sorry, spacetime US government age?

• 1:05:39Brooke Averick?

US government age on birth certificate, twenty-eight.

• 1:05:42Speaker 04

  In South Korea, you're twenty-six?

• 1:05:43Brooke Averick?

In South Korea, yeah, it'd be twenty-six, right?

• 1:05:46Connor Wood?

Six. What a beautiful, kind of rolls off the tongue, right?

• 1:05:49Brooke Averick?

  Twenty-six?

• 1:05:49Connor Wood?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:50Brooke Averick?

  Almost rolls off the tongue.

• 1:05:52Speaker 04

  Cool. I'm thirty-seven.

• 1:05:54Connor Wood?

  In many ways.

• 1:05:56Speaker 04

Okay, read this to me so I don't

• 1:05:57Brooke Averick?

  Go ahead.

• 1:05:58Speaker 04

I'm gonna do it like by, like A-U-R-A-L, oral learning.

• 1:06:01Brooke Averick?

  Yes.

• 1:06:02Connor Wood?

I love that. A father and his son are in a car accident.

• 1:06:05Speaker 04

  That's it.

• 1:06:06Connor Wood?

The father dies at the scene and the son is rushed to the hospital. At the hospital, the surgeon looks at the boy and says, "I can't operate on this boy. He is my son. How can this be?" The father dies at the scene and the son is rushed to the hospital. At the hospital, the surgeon looks at the boy and says, "I cannot operate on this boy. He is my son. How can this be?"

• 1:06:26Speaker 04

I mean, maybe it's a thing of like, we are all God's children or something.

• 1:06:32Connor Wood?

  Okay, Christian Alana is here.

• 1:06:35Speaker 04

  What is up, Jesus freaks?

• 1:06:39Speaker 04

How could this be? I have no idea, but I'm not like good at math.

• 1:06:43Brooke Averick?

You're not gonna like the answer. I mean, you're gonna love the answer, but you're not gonna, you're not gonna like. What?

• 1:06:49Connor Wood?

  Give it to her.

• 1:06:50Speaker 04

  The doctor is his mother.

• 1:06:53Connor Wood?

  Oh, God.

• 1:06:54Speaker 04

  My God. Oh, my God.

• 1:06:55Connor Wood?

Also, also an option, gay dads.

• 1:06:58Speaker 04

Well, that's where I had went. Right. Oh, my God.

• 1:07:01Connor Wood?

I, I said the same thing you said.

• 1:07:03Speaker 04

That is so sad. And sad. Oh, my heart's racing. I know. Oh, my God. I know. I, I consider myself a feminist. Of course. And even the fact we were talking about that for the past hour and it's still, it's not your fault, Alana, it's the system. Wow. See, I have so much unlearning and learning to do. Yeah.

• 1:07:21Connor Wood?

  Yeah. Dr. Pepper's a woman.

• 1:07:23Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 1:07:24Connor Wood?

Yeah. Spread the, spread the good word.

• 1:07:26Speaker 04

That is so frightening to me. And sad. I'll say that. I'm saying frightening, but that's distancing. I'm actually sad. When I'm up close to it, I'm sad. And I'm sorry, I'm sorry we had to do that. I appreciate it. I'm never gonna forget this. Okay. I wasn't going to beforehand, but this now it's cemented.

• 1:07:42Connor Wood?

I love the riddle because I, we do think about this riddle a lot. Like, I feel like.

• 1:07:45Speaker 04

It does come up often when we're challenging the system.

• 1:07:49Connor Wood?

And it's like, it's like, I'm like, oh, the surgeon is a woman. The surgeon's a woman. Women can be surgeons.

• 1:07:56Speaker 04

  Yeah, they can.

• 1:07:57Connor Wood?

  Doi.

• 1:07:57Speaker 04

And they are, yeah. My best friend Eden is a surgical physician's assistant.

• 1:08:01Connor Wood?

Okay, shout out once again to Eden. Thank you for your service.

• 1:08:04Speaker 04

It's like, I know this bitch from 11 years old. I know that she's doing surgery on cancer and cancer titties in particular. And I think of her doing her work and what a badass she is, and I'm not even thinking of a woman being a surgeon.

• 1:08:20Speaker 04

Something for everyone to think about.

• 1:08:21Connor Wood?

  Take this with you today.

• 1:08:22Speaker 04

  Fuck.

• 1:08:24Connor Wood?

How long are you in LA?

• 1:08:27Speaker 04

  Forty-eight hours.

• 1:08:28Connor Wood?

Forty-eight hours, and you graced us here.

• 1:08:30Speaker 04

  I. Oh, my God. You don't know. I'm so thrilled. You know what I really wanted to get to, though? I saw on like the sort of prep sheet flossing. I think that is something that we should talk about.

• 1:08:41Connor Wood?

  Like this?

• 1:08:41Speaker 04

You're like, is flossing bad? Why did you think it was potentially bad at all? I thought it was so good for you. Cause. I think that was you that thought it was bad.

• 1:08:49Connor Wood?

  I thought flossing was bad.

• 1:08:50Brooke Averick?

Well, what we had done was that we went through all of our old notes in case we needed some, some topics. And one of the notes was, is flossing bad? And we were gonna try to figure out what we meant by that.

• 1:09:01Speaker 04

  Oh, okay.

• 1:09:01Brooke Averick?

  Because it was old.

• 1:09:02Speaker 04

Because I think it's very good.

• 1:09:04Brooke Averick?

  Yeah, I think it's good too, but I think I assume it's.

• 1:09:06Speaker 04

I was nervous about like, did the youth get anti-flossing messaging? And I wanted to address that.

• 1:09:11Brooke Averick?

I would assume maybe it was you that had written that. It sounds like something you would write.

• 1:09:15Connor Wood?

Well, it's just like, I feel like every, especially this could be relevant with, with having been pregnant and having a new baby. I feel like a lot of the messaging changes where it's like, egg whites are good.

• 1:09:27Brooke Averick?

  Yes, dude.

• 1:09:27Connor Wood?

Egg yolks are bad. Egg yolks are only good. The egg white is bad now. Don't eat eggs. They're bad for you. The flossing thing, I'd started, I started to get messaging like, you're disrupting your teeth's natural cycle. I'm like, they don't have cycles. My teeth don't have cycles.

• 1:09:41Brooke Averick?

Yeah, yeah. All right mama there.

• 1:09:43Connor Wood?

Yeah. And it's like, I think someone had a dream. Yeah. You have a dream. And it's like, I'm gonna start telling everyone this. And it's based in, on nothing but except, wrong intuition. Where it's like, no, people should floss.

• 1:09:56Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:09:57Connor Wood?

Like, I have popcorn kernels in my teeth, you know?

• 1:09:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:09:59Connor Wood?

From three days ago. I need to floss.

• 1:10:01Speaker 04

  That's right. That's right.

• 1:10:02Brooke Averick?

  Yeah. So.

• 1:10:03Speaker 04

Okay. I just wanted to touch on that.

• 1:10:04Brooke Averick?

  In summary, human magic.

• 1:10:08Connor Wood?

  Human magic, December 20th.

• 1:10:10Brooke Averick?

Fabulous. Floss. And women can be surgeons, women are surgeons. And doctors too.

• 1:10:18Connor Wood?

  Can be anything.

• 1:10:20Speaker 04

  And anything.

• 1:10:21Connor Wood?

  Including the president.

• 1:10:23Brooke Averick?

  That's right.

• 1:10:24Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:10:25Brooke Averick?

And also I just want to like, say that human magic, my special that comes out on December 20th is available on Hulu and Disney Plus worldwide. Just saying. Okay, just saying.

• 1:10:32Speaker 04

  Yes. Anything else we're missing?

• 1:10:34Brooke Averick?

  Just thank you guys.

• 1:10:36Speaker 04

Like, what? Fucking cutie pies. I'm, I'm so thrilled.

• 1:10:42Brooke Averick?

  I

• 1:10:42Speaker 04

  I'm so thrilled.

• 1:10:44Brooke Averick?

  I'm so thrilled.

• 1:10:45Speaker 04

Oh, my gosh, my babies, my little babies.

• 1:10:48Brooke Averick?

  Mama.

• 1:10:48Speaker 04

  I'm obsessed.

• 1:10:49Brooke Averick?

  Our mama bear.

• 1:10:50Speaker 04

Mama, but not of the mama bear.

• 1:10:52Brooke Averick?

Yeah, our mama bear that's breaking the system.

• 1:10:54Speaker 04

Yeah, love it. Let's do it.

• 1:10:55Brooke Averick?

Thank you. We just love you.

• 1:10:57Speaker 04

I'm thrilled. I love you as well. I really

• 1:10:59Brooke Averick?

  Thank you so

• 1:11:00Speaker 04

do in the context that's appropriate. I love you guys as well.

• 1:11:03Brooke Averick?

  Yes.

• 1:11:03Speaker 04

You're adorable. Also, like, I just did want to discuss Tom Holland. Is this a thing you discuss?

• 1:11:11Connor Wood?

That's the nicest thing people say to me. Yes.

• 1:11:14Speaker 04

  Okay, cool.

• 1:11:15Connor Wood?

Then thank you for really setting up the trajectory of not only the rest of my day, but week. By reminding me that.

• 1:11:22Speaker 04

I thought you were gonna say career. I was like, oh, good.

• 1:11:23Connor Wood?

My career. I have been around the Holland family one time and they did the security try to go with your family, Doc Lang, and I was

• 1:11:31Speaker 04

  Obsessed.

• 1:11:31Connor Wood?

  I don't know. I'm working this event. I don't know them.

• 1:11:34Speaker 04

  Are you lying?

• 1:11:34Connor Wood?

No. When I worked at Bird, the scooter company, we did a partnership with one of the Disney movies.

• 1:11:40Speaker 04

  So funny.

• 1:11:40Connor Wood?

And it was Tom Holland was one. It was Tom Holland and Will Smith. And they were there at the premiere. Spies in disguise.

• 1:11:48Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 1:11:49Connor Wood?

Disguise double entendre. Did I use that right? Being disguise and disguise, like mask.

• 1:11:56Speaker 04

  And these guys.

• 1:11:57Connor Wood?

  These guys.

• 1:11:58Speaker 04

  I don't know.

• 1:11:58Connor Wood?

They did try to have me adopted by the Hollands, but

• 1:12:01Speaker 04

  Cool.

• 1:12:01Connor Wood?

  It didn't work.

• 1:12:02Speaker 04

That was the only other thing I needed to cover today.

• 1:12:04Connor Wood?

You know what I hate is there is about 1,000 things that I just I know that as soon as we stop recording, I'm gonna be like, why didn't I ask that?

• 1:12:13Speaker 04

I would love to stay connected.

• 1:12:15Connor Wood?

  Yes, please, please, please.

• 1:12:16Speaker 04

  I'm charmed. I'm enchanted.

• 1:12:18Brooke Averick?

  Enchanted, to say the least.

• 1:12:19Speaker 04

  So sweet.

• 1:12:20Brooke Averick?

And thank you for answering all my questions about pregnancy and the amio and the water and everything.

• 1:12:26Speaker 04

And like my pleasure, my honor, my duty. I'm here. I would love to do it again.

• 1:12:31Connor Wood?

  You are the best, truly.

• 1:12:32Speaker 04

  Ever.

• 1:12:33Connor Wood?

Everyone, listen to Human Magic on Hulu and Disney Plus, December 20th. It's amazing. And thank you, Alana Glazer, for coming on.

• 1:12:41Brooke Averick?

  Okay.

• 1:12:41Speaker 04

It really, they say don't make your idols, but I really would encourage it.

• 1:12:44Connor Wood?

  Please just try it.

• 1:12:45Speaker 04

  I would recommend it.

• 1:12:46Brooke Averick?

Some are good, some are horrible.

• 1:12:48Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 1:12:49Brooke Averick?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:49Speaker 04

  This one was great.

• 1:12:50Brooke Averick?

  Great, good.

• 1:12:51Connor Wood?

  Thank you, guys.

• 1:12:52Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 1:12:53Brooke Averick?

Okay, thank you. This week on Close Friends.

• 1:12:57Connor Wood?

A lot of times, we are forgetting, we're like, we're like, we're like... Oh my god.

• 1:13:04Brooke Averick?

Sorry to bring up your mold.

• 1:13:05Connor Wood?

This could come back to mold. This could all come back to mold.

• 1:13:08Brooke Averick?
