The wrongs we must right, the fights we must win, the future we must secure together for our nation. This is what's in front of us. This determines what's next for all of us. We are Marines. We were made for this.

Thank you to our partner Royal Caribbean. Dude, have you seen this? Royal Caribbean just dropped The Legend of the Seas. It's the biggest cruise ship on the planet. Like, nothing's even close to being this big. And it's sailing out of Fort Lauderdale, starting this November.

• 0:38Speaker 02

That's right. This thing is stacked. Seven pools, more places to eat than you can even count. I mean, they have something for everybody.

• 0:47Travis Kelce?

Like, bring the kids, bring mom and dad, shoot, bring the whole crew. Everybody's got a spot. That's what makes it special.

• 0:54Speaker 02

And the entertainment, Latin music, ice skating, full-on Broadway shows. It's pretty amazing. Pretty much everything you want in one place. Oh, and did I mention there's a water park?

• 1:04Travis Kelce?

You didn't, and that's, that'd be the kicker for me.

• 1:06Speaker 02

  I love a water park.

• 1:07Travis Kelce?

But the crazy one? Crown's Edge, a ropes course off the side of the ship, not for the faint of heart, brother.

• 1:16Speaker 02

They've also got Playmaker, sports bar, and arcade. So that means games on every screen. I love a good arcade sports place combination.

• 1:25Travis Kelce?

All right, Captain, get the family on the new Legend of the Seas, sailing November 2026 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

All righty. On today's bonus episode, this is a special one to me. We got Jeff Stoutland coming in. That's right. The old ball coach. We've been trying to get this Stoutland episode out for a while and we just wanted to make it, you know, done right. Stout means a lot to me. So we wanted to make it a special one and something that honored him for the 13 years that he spent as the Eagles offensive line coach and the guys that he ended up transforming and making long careers out of him. So enjoy this bonus episode with Jeff Stoutland, Travis Kelsey, Brett Selig, Jordan Mailata, and I get me.

• 3:01Travis Kelce?

Jason, you want to do the honors?

• 3:04Speaker 02

Sure do, Trav. Been looking forward to this one. All righty, our guest today is a six foot offensive line coach from Staten Island, New York. He's a member of the Southern Connecticut University Hall of Fame. He won two BCS national championships with Alabama. He's a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles and in his 13 seasons as the Eagles offensive line coach, he coached seven different players. He combined 27 Pro Bowls. Six different players. He combined 16 All Pros. Not a good percentage. Please welcome the head president of Stoutland University, Jeff Stoutland.

• 3:40Speaker 02

There we go. There we go.

• 3:43Travis Kelce?

Welcome to the show, big guy.

• 3:45Speaker 03

First of all, I'm not six foot tall.

• 3:47Speaker 02

Well, you used to be. You used to be.

• 3:49Speaker 03

Never was six foot tall, ever.

• 3:51Speaker 02

You were never six foot tall.

• 3:52Travis Kelce?

You were always six one, right?

• 3:53Speaker 03

Back, I was six two. I went down to like six one and three quarters or a half.

• 3:59Speaker 03

I broke my neck, so I crushed my neck so many times that I, yeah.

• 4:04Speaker 02

That's what it is. It's those stingers from freaking playing linebacker.

• 4:06Speaker 03

  That's right. You know it.

• 4:08Travis Kelce?

  Hold on linebacker linebacker coach.

• 4:11Speaker 03

  You didn't know that?

• 4:11Speaker 02

  It's a whole story. That's a whole nother story.

• 4:14Travis Kelce?

Crazy. This is crazy. It makes sense though. You know, every part of the defense, which uh, which makes you a great offensive line coach. I'm sure there's so many other qualities as well, but I always thought that was the unique thing about Jason is Jason's always been a defensive minded kid and person growing up and then they throw him on the offensive side and he knows where everybody is, their gaps, their alignments, their, how they're communicating and everything is kinda had the keys to the test.

• 4:39Speaker 03

Our, our meetings would start like, and Jason can attest to this. We would go over identification of defensive fronts, pressures, um, a whole numbering system in terms of the pressures, uh, verbiage, what do we call the different pressures? So we could communicate to each other like our own language. So defense, it was like Hoosiers. You didn't touch a ball before. It was all defense. When is the front gonna move? When is it not gonna move? And I had a lot of feedback from players over the years that I coached that would say, I never learned so much about defense in my life. Like,

• 5:14Speaker 02

  Right.

• 5:15Speaker 03

But that's kinda a system and I, I believe in this system. I do.

• 5:19Travis Kelce?

  Hell yeah.

• 5:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:20Travis Kelce?

  That's fascinating.

• 5:21Speaker 02

You know, when we were together for 13 years and watching the way defenses would evolve and then they would change what they're doing because they know that we know what they're doing. Like we'd have guys go other places and that was one of the things that like, you know, you're on to something when other teams are starting to shift that they're starting to hide the linebacker alignment because you know when they're in a 40 alignment, that they're giving away the pressure. They're giving away the spike. You know that when they're, they're in a certain stance that they're, they're giving you information and we, we would spend hours looking at that stuff and Stadi would come in with all of these pointers. When they're in this, then this, and that's honestly one of the things I miss most about being in the room with you, coach. Is going over all that stuff. I mean, that was so much fun.

• 6:05Speaker 03

Yeah, but you know, you know what, you know what started to happen as you know, and I, I hate to say this, but it's true. One year we had, I think it was. Eight players, I don't, I don't know the exact number, but we had eight players that were plucked off our roster to other teams. So when we discuss all these little details, you, you don't think they're going to the other teams?

• 6:28Speaker 02

  Oh, for sure.

• 6:29Speaker 03

So we started, we started having our own little, like, we were just looking at each other. I'd look, I'd look in his eyes and I'd be like, like, yeah, you see what I see? And then we would be like, all right. So I say, just keep watching people. And then other players were like, what are they talking about? And I just said, keep watching. Let's see if this is holding up or not. And we would pick up on these, these things.

• 6:54Speaker 02

Yep. Listen, I knew we were going to get bogged down in this right away.

• 6:57Travis Kelce?

  Right away.

• 6:57Speaker 02

First of all, first of all, Coach, you've been, you've been out of coaching for a month now for the first time. How many years have you been a coach consecutively? I know you for 13 years with the Eagles, but consecutively, every time at this time of the year, you've been preparing for a season for how many years straight?

• 7:16Speaker 03

  Forty-four years straight.

• 7:18Speaker 02

  Oh, my gosh.

• 7:19Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's a long time.

• 7:21Speaker 02

Well, how, how does it feel right now? How, how has it felt to have March and not going into a building and kind of preparing for a season like you have been for 44 years?

• 7:34Speaker 03

  Awesome.

• 7:40Speaker 03

Being honest, like, like, you know, that Sunday night in the off season, you know, the off season, because you got, you got to realize you work seven days a week, I guess, July, right on through until February, middle of February, even later than that, if you keep playing like, uh, travel, like we all did to get, you know, every, every year. So then it becomes, then it becomes a very short off season. And, uh, you know, then, and then you have another whole deal with the, with the draft and evaluations, but you'd have a million, I mean, a million things to be doing on a timeline. And you're thinking about it on Sunday night and you're like, oh my goodness, I gotta get in there earlier because I gotta get this done, that done. I don't want to stay there all night. It's

• 8:23Speaker 03

the off season and you're always thinking about stuff and. That's a cool feeling, you know, 60 minutes on Sunday, not not having to worry about or thinking about and actually being home, just being home with my family and not having my mind racing somewhere else. That's it's really been good.

• 8:41Speaker 02

That's awesome. That's awesome. You've been getting some family time with Allison and I know you, by the way, new grandfather.

• 8:48Travis Kelce?

  Let's go.

• 8:49Speaker 02

Jeff Snadlin, that's right. We gotta do that. That's more important than any of this stuff right there. Congratulations, Coach.

• 8:56Speaker 03

  Thank you.

• 8:56Travis Kelce?

Well, let's uh, let's get back to the.

• 8:58Speaker 02

Yeah, what what's next? Like you're you're you're sitting down right now. I know you're enjoying yourself, but you haven't officially announced you're retired. You've obviously stepped away from the Philadelphia Eagles, but do you have any idea what you want to do from here on? Like, are you are you done done? Like, where are we at, Coach?

• 9:18Speaker 03

So, um, if you can like rewind the tape here, go back a little bit, and your last three years of your career, we would have this conversation at the end of every year, you'd come at some point, you get a little time to, you know, rest and think about it. Then you'd come in, Coach, you have a few minutes to talk, and we would close the door, and we'd sit down and you you, because you're an emotional guy, you you get a little emotional, and we would talk through, you know, what the future is. And I would never give tell anybody what they should do, or if you ask me for my advice, I I just and I would say to you, I think you're going to know when it's time.

• 9:59Speaker 02

Yes, I remember that very well.

• 10:01Speaker 03

With all the changes that were going on and and stuff, and I I it just came a point here, not long ago, where I was very aware of my surroundings and my and I was thinking to myself, this might be that time. And.

• 10:19Speaker 03

So a lot of us don't, people that work for a very, very long time in their life, they struggle, they very, they have a very hard time of making this decision.

• 10:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:31Speaker 03

And I don't even know what the decision is. I just felt like it was the right decision. And I, I've always believed in taking control of, of my future and, and who I am and what I do. And so I just felt it. So there, there's that. And now you ask, what is the future? So all of a sudden you make a decision like that. And I really wasn't ready to make that. This, I, I had been thinking, you know, I had actually spoken to you about like, this is gonna, this day for me is gonna come, I don't know, but it's not that far away. And this isn't that long ago. And so now you think about it, where does, where do you go with this?

• 11:15Speaker 03

But I will say, I will say this to you. I promise you this. I am jacked up and excited. And I have all these, I've got all these ideas right now. And I, I don't really feel like revealing what I want. First of all, I can't really do much. I want to just set back for a year and just reset.

• 11:35Speaker 02

  Collect yourself.

• 11:36Speaker 03

Yeah, I want to reset. I want to reset. And most importantly, I've been married for like thirty-three, thirty-four, maybe thirty, I don't know, she'll get mad at me, but I, it's, it's in that area. Thirty-three, thirty-four, thirty-five.

• 11:48Speaker 02

  We're in the thirties.

• 11:49Speaker 03

  I think it's thirty-four.

• 11:50Speaker 02

  He's close, Al.

• 11:50Speaker 03

  Let's go to thirty-four. Let's go to thirty-four.

• 11:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 11:53Speaker 03

Alright, so, and I think that's actually the number. But uh, it's been my, our entire marriage, I've not been home. I've hardly been home. And so every single night, we're in the morning, we'll have coffee, we'll sit and talk, or in the evening. I haven't done that ever, ever. And so there's an adjustment period too now, when you, when you do stuff like this. But it's exciting and it's, it's, it's a whole nother chapter in your life. And I'm excited about that. And, and to have other things to do and, and uh, believe me, there'll be things that I'm gonna do in football. Cause I love, here's what I love to do, guys. I love evaluating offensive linemen. I think it's very, very difficult.

• 12:35Speaker 03

If you miss on offensive linemen in this league, you're in trouble.

• 12:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:42Speaker 03

Yep. You're, you're gonna get set back. And we all know there's teams that have had that happen and it's going to cost you. So I know how important that is and I think I'm, I think I'm pretty good at it by the way. And so I love the process of that. And so I think there'll be something down the road where I'll be involved with doing some things like that.

• 13:05Travis Kelce?

I love to hear this and it sounds like you're excited about the, the new style of life and, and still being a part of the game or around the game. But I gotta ask you, Coach, what was, what was your first impression of Jason Kelce? Both on film and when he walked in the building?

• 13:22Speaker 03

Well, first of all, uh, I want to be around people that are passionate. They love the game. You can have all the critical factors. You can have all the skill, all the things needed to play good and all that. But if you're not passionate and you don't love the game, it, it, it's probably not going to work out very well. It's gonna, you'll, you'll be okay, whatever, but you're never going to make it to the, to the top of the top of the top. Like, uh, like both you guys have. And so number one, that was the first impression was this guy is, this guy is completely bought it. He is, but there's things I can do that I believe to help him.

• 14:02Speaker 03

So one day he, uh, Trav, I don't know if you ever heard this story, but I know Jason doesn't want me to tell the story or not, but uh, you know, it is what it is. Feel free. He hyperextended, he hyperextended, well, he got hit. It wasn't, he was ripping, again, he, he, he doesn't know, there's no other gear for Jason. It's 100 miles per hour or it's nothing. Shut him down, I'm out, whatever. So he hyperextends his elbow. I think it was a running back ran into his arm, his arm, you can't see me, but his arm was out like that. And the back ran right into his arm. He hyperextended his elbow. So he, oh, he goes down, he's screaming.

• 14:45Speaker 03

I don't really know how bad it was because you know Jason better than I know Jason, but he was screaming. I thought he broke his shoulder and his arm. So he rips his helmet off and threw it across. There was three fields in Philly across. It was the first day I was, we were out in OTAs and I was like, holy smoke, I'm in for a treat. And then I remember JP just looking at me smiling like, get ready, big boy. You ain't seen nothing yet.

• 15:14Speaker 03

You ain't seen nothing yet. I remember that day very well.

• 15:20Travis Kelce?

You gotta do something with that energy, man. A good old Kelsey helmet throw is always in the back pocket, man. We got that thing ready.

• 15:26Speaker 03

Have you, is that part of your game too? Have you thrown a helmet?

• 15:29Travis Kelce?

  I think it's just, yeah.

• 15:32Speaker 03

He's done it in the games.

• 15:33Travis Kelce?

There's a few, there's a few memes out there. I didn't throw it three football fields over, but I gave it a good.

• 15:39Speaker 03

You threw a helmet in the actual NFL game?

• 15:43Travis Kelce?

Yeah, yeah. Coach wasn't too happy about it.

• 15:47Travis Kelce?

Coach wasn't too happy about it. Had to apologize to a few people.

• 15:50Speaker 03

We can laugh about it now. Not the best, but.

• 15:53Travis Kelce?

Yeah, it wasn't the best moment, but.

• 15:55Speaker 03

Well, I don't want to, I want to be more talking about the overall career, but I do have to ask, last season, right? You guys go from winning the Super Bowl, setting a record at the running back position.

• 16:06Travis Kelce?

  Yeah.

• 16:07Speaker 03

With the rushing game. What, what happened last year? Just in general, like, what was the reason for the struggles in your mind? I don't know. What went wrong last season with the Birds? Well, I, I think anytime things don't go well, and I don't want to sound like I'm on a, like in an interview for, but it's the truth. It's, it's execution and it's calling the right play at the right time and not running bad plays into bad defenses. I mean, it ain't that hard. I'm not going to sit here and make up all these. That's pretty much it.

• 16:40Speaker 02

Well, the one you talk about speed and attention to detail and how much each little inch and step matters. One of the things that was the most surprising looking this year was the tush push, to be honest with you. Cause that's a play, that quarterback sneak play, even before it was a tush push, was a play that we've run at like a 90% clip year after year. And to see that struggle at times this past season, I mean, last year they were going to ban it. Right? I went to the owners meeting, they're looking to get rid of it.

• 17:11Speaker 03

Why were they looking to get rid of it?

• 17:12Speaker 02

  Well, they said.

• 17:14Travis Kelce?

  It wasn't safe, coach.

• 17:18Speaker 03

But now there's no problem. Everything's okay.

• 17:20Travis Kelce?

Yeah, well, just because guys started running it safer.

• 17:24Speaker 03

  Hey, gotta be.

• 17:28Speaker 03

  You're a funny dude, man.

• 17:33Travis Kelce?

Coach, were you, were you the inventor of the tush push? I think Sirianni, Coach Sirianni always said you were the inventor of it. Is that the truth?

• 17:41Speaker 03

The tush push is quarterback sneak. First of all, let me just say this, okay? Let me just say this, first of all, okay?

• 17:49Speaker 02

  Get off your chest.

• 17:49Speaker 03

Trav, tell me if I'm off, if I'm out of bounds here. So tush push, brotherly, why do we have have names for it? Like, why do we gotta, it's kind of, it's making fun of the play, actually, kinda.

• 18:02Travis Kelce?

  I hear you on that.

• 18:03Speaker 03

Jason, Jason, do you think that? Is there a lot of little details that go into this play?

• 18:09Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, very much so.

• 18:10Speaker 03

Okay, well, that, those words kind of make it sound like it's some kind of funny, like, I don't know. I tell you, I, I, I've, every time I hear it, I'm like, call it organized mass. That's what it is. Call something what it is. I hate when we have to have.

• 18:28Travis Kelce?

Give it a little bit more respect in the name. Yeah, I hear you.

• 18:31Speaker 03

Yeah, like, like, it's not a, it's not a joke. It's not a, uh, there's so many little things that go into this play. And by the way, this is the one play you cannot practice full speed. There's no way. This play is on the job training. And so when you have the players, after you detail the angles, you gotta have personnel, the right personnel. Quarterback's gotta be strong. It's about organized mass. It's about setting the apex of the wedge, but it's about angles. And there's a lot of other things that are involved. Can't get into it. It'd be a whole dissertation.

• 19:07Travis Kelce?

Sauce. Can't get rid of this.

• 19:09Speaker 03

Yeah, it's grandma's secret. Yeah, grandma's secret sauce. So.

• 19:13Speaker 02

It's like that, those meatballs. Can't be giving away the red, red sauce. Come on now.

• 19:17Speaker 03

Yeah, the meatballs. Vic's always talking about his meatballs.

• 19:22Speaker 03

But anyway, yeah, so there's, there's secret sauce to this and that's, that's that. And I don't think when you take, if you take a player out of there that has been doing it for a while, and now it's not organized mass, it's just mass. Then, then, then, then you got a problem. You're not making it.

• 19:41Speaker 02

All right. Well, we're gonna, we're gonna change gears here. We're gonna get to some gotta ask. A lot of this is just geared around your career or being an offensive line coach. So this first one, what is the weirdest habit or personality trait an offensive lineman seem to have where you're like, yeah, this guy's born to have his hand in the dirt?

• 20:01Speaker 03

  Habit. Uh.

• 20:03Speaker 02

Could be like a mentality, like.

• 20:05Speaker 03

The first thing that came to my mind, and this is gonna sound weird and maybe delete this from your program. I don't care. The way, the way a guy walks. Just the way a guy walks. Just the way a guy walks. Okay. A real guy, like a real, real guy. Sometimes, yeah. Just the way a guy walks. I'd be like, oh shoot, like I've seen that walk before. I've seen the way that. Yeah. Yeah. I've, I've seen that game.

• 20:33Travis Kelce?

Is it, is it a, is it a, is it a sassy walk? Is it a confidence?

• 20:37Speaker 02

That gut out, the guts out? Like what, what's the walk look like?

• 20:45Speaker 02

Organized, it's just, it's just the way it looks.

• 20:49Speaker 03

It's just the way it looks.

• 20:50Travis Kelce?

Who's the hardest defender that you've ever had to scheme for?

• 20:53Speaker 03

So, when we were in college in 1997, I think it was, or 96.

• 21:00Travis Kelce?

  It was a good year.

• 21:01Speaker 03

Dwight Freeney was a freshman in college.

• 21:04Speaker 02

  Ooh.

• 21:05Speaker 03

Bloomfield High School, you know, he was a great baseball player. I don't even know if he played football for about one year in high school. But he, he comes in, he lines up as the edge player and we had a left tackle, Mark Benowitz, great player. And Mark's, you know, like, oh, you know, he's a Rhodes, Rhodes Scholar, had all these accolades. And this young freshman is coming around the edge, like with his hand on the ground and he couldn't, he couldn't block him. I mean, he could not block him. And he looked, and he looked at me. He's like, Coach, he's got his hands up. He's like, I don't know what to do. I'm losing confidence. So, I swear, I swear to you, I said, "Close your eyes."

• 21:52Speaker 03

And I'm not joking, I swear to God.

• 21:54Travis Kelce?

  Oh, wait.

• 21:55Speaker 03

Kick three times. Yes. "Close your eyes and kick three times." I said, "After the third kick, open your eyes." And he's like, "What?" And I said, "Just freaking do it."

• 22:08Speaker 03

He comes back and he goes, "It works." He goes, "Why did you tell me that?" I said, "'Cause, because you were, you were reading the rush and you weren't kicking fast enough. And you didn't have enough separation off the line and you kept turning right off the snap because you felt like you were beat. And so you were giving up a short edge. And I, I didn't, I just thought about that, like, so, so that's a true story, honest to God, and it helped.

• 22:32Speaker 02

So you basically, Coach, you basically, you sandlotting him. You Benny the Jet told him, like, "Smalls, just go out to outfield. I'm gonna put that ball up right there. You just close your eyes and I'll do the rest."

• 22:45Travis Kelce?

  He really did.

• 22:46Speaker 03

  I, I, I, I had to have, I had to have, what am I gonna say? I don't know.

• 22:51Speaker 02

But I mean, it makes complete sense because.

• 22:53Speaker 03

Instantaneously, I thought to myself, "What is the initial problem he's having?" And it was that he was, he was turning.

• 23:02Speaker 03

Because he felt so much edge quickness. And I said, how can I help him not? So I thought to myself, just tell him to close his eyes. So he did. It worked out.

• 23:11Speaker 02

  Love a coach.

• 23:12Travis Kelce?

  There you go.

• 23:12Speaker 02

Well, let me ask you this. What are you going to miss most? You won two Super Bowls. You're in Philadelphia for 13 years. What are you going to miss most about being the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles? What do you? Is there anything you want to say to Philadelphia? How did? What did you think of your time in Philadelphia?

• 23:28Speaker 03

I like not only myself, my family. We are, we absolutely are in love with Philadelphia. We love living here. We're not going to live anywhere else forever. And Allison would always say to me, I don't care where you go. Well, I ain't, good law, I ain't going anywhere. This is, this is our home. The fans, you know, I grew up in Staten Island and I grew up in New York City. And the people are a little bit, you know, they're a little abrasive. They speak your mind and they say what's, what's, and there's a lot of similarity and there's a lot of carryover. But the people in Philly, man, you could say what you want.

• 24:11Speaker 03

But if you are willing to play your ass off, to coach, put everything you got on the line and coach your butt off. And they know you can't trick people in Philly. You can, they just watch the game because they all go, everybody goes to the game and everybody watches the game. So they know they're not just, you're not conning anybody in Philadelphia. They know when it's synchronized, they know who's playing hard, who's not playing hard, who's not. And so you don't do that? Hold your ass, man.

• 24:42Travis Kelce?

Well, I'll tell, I'll tell you what, Stoud, if you're, if you're ever going to miss getting yelled at by Philly fans or getting, hearing, hearing them down there at the lake. I'm sure you could just go right back to the lake, baby, and, and, and hear that loud and proud.

• 24:56Speaker 02

  They're still there.

• 24:56Travis Kelce?

  Yeah, they're still there.

• 25:00Speaker 03

It don't matter what day it is, they're going to be there.

• 25:02Travis Kelce?

And you're an absolute legend in the city. So I'm sure every time you go back to the lake, man, they'll be cheering loud and proud for you too.

• 25:08Speaker 03

Well, Coach. I'm so incredibly grateful for what you've done for me and my career, my teammates' career, the career you had in Philadelphia, and you've had your entire coaching journey. Can't wait to see what you do next. And also can't wait to fix my golf swing over at your house. Get some red light therapy in. It's on the work.

• 25:28Travis Kelce?

Yeah, Jason, you're a little pale right now. I need you glowing. I need you glowing, Jason.

• 25:32Speaker 03

That's right. I am pale. Gosh dang, look at that skin. You know, I should have said this to start the whole thing, but you know, when you do something like this, there's no, there's no plan. This is, this is just like, hey, man, let's, let's roll. This is how Travis likes it, right?

• 25:48Travis Kelce?

Come on now. Come on now.

• 25:49Speaker 03

Yeah, you love it like that. So but there's something, there's something that we talked about the fans, but, but really, from the organization, from the top all the way down to the bottom, and I mean, for Mr. Laurie, Howie, Nick, Doug, Chip, all the guys that, you know, hired me, and to the people, I'm talking like, you realize this, every morning at six, between six and seven o'clock, I would get a cup of coffee, and Ms. Keisha in the cafeteria and I would have a little conversation.

• 26:23Travis Kelce?

  Shout out to Ms. Keisha.

• 26:25Speaker 03

Ms. Keisha. Every single morning. And maybe Charles would be there too, if we're lucky, and T Roy might try to nose in on the thing too. But every single morning, I think that might be what I miss the most. I mean, so I have so many close people in that building that, that aren't even involved in the football, like, they are involved in the football because they're taking care of us, but the training, athletic training department, to the video department, you know, I'm gonna miss a lot of those people. Yeah, a lot.

• 26:55Speaker 02

  I love it, Coach.

• 26:56Travis Kelce?

Well, I'm sure they're gonna miss it too, big guy.

• 26:59Speaker 02

You will be missed, no doubt. You were one of one in that building, the energy and passion that you brought. You can hear it here when you're talking, how much you love talking ball, how much the details matter. You know, we'll have to get you, we'll have to get your back doing some tape or something like that, if you'd be open to it. We're gonna, we're gonna do some tape breakdowns. I'd love a little just out of tape breakdown.

• 27:17Travis Kelce?

  Let's go.

• 27:18Speaker 02

  Oh, man, dive deep, man.

• 27:20Travis Kelce?

It's gotta be my tape so I can get coached up by the big guy one time.

• 27:23Speaker 02

Yeah, you always said you wanted to coach receivers. You always said you wanted to coach receivers. You're not gonna believe this. There's a playbook over there. It's a wide receivers playbook from Syracuse when they told me I was gonna go coach receiver. No way.

• 27:36Travis Kelce?

  Coach, I appreciate you. Yeah.

• 27:39Speaker 02

  I love you guys, man.

• 27:40Travis Kelce?

  Happy for you, man.

• 27:41Speaker 02

And your mom, your mom and your dad, your mom's unbelievable. How does she build, how does she create these two people like this that have so much success at this level? And unbelievable, unbelievable story.

• 27:56Travis Kelce?

  We're, we're lucky men.

• 27:57Speaker 02

What you're doing right now, I'm like, how do these two guys do it? Like, how they pulling this off? Like, these guys, these guys. We have no idea, to be honest with you. No matter what they do.

• 28:07Travis Kelce?

We get great guests like you to come and tell unbelievable stories like this. That's how we're doing it.

• 28:11Speaker 02

Alrighty, we're here for the second half of the Jeff Stoutland episode and we wanted to do something a little bit different. Obviously Coach Stout was in Philadelphia for a long time, so I thought it'd be cool to incorporate some of the guys that were here during his entire tenure. And just sit back, tell stories of the legendary coach, Philadelphia Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland. Uh, so we obviously have Coach Stout back, 13 years with the Philadelphia Eagles, great number by the way. You and I both did the same number of years with the Eagles.

• 29:43Speaker 03

  I didn't know that.

• 29:43Speaker 02

Yeah, it's a good number. Then we got my man Brent Selick, only did 11 seasons. Yeah, not as good as you guys. Ended on a Super Bowl though, high legendary tight end. And then we got Jordan Mailata, still currently playing Philadelphia Eagle. Probably, I think your biggest like success story, right? I mean, you've had a lot of them, but to take a guy that had never played the game before and teach him how to play football.

• 30:06Speaker 03

Yeah, there was, there's a lot of stories that, uh, and they're all fun. It was the challenge that you have as the coach is to, what do I gotta do to help this player be the best?

• 30:17Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 30:18Speaker 03

And that's kind of what we did with Jordan.

• 30:19Speaker 02

I do want to start off with just some word associations. I'm going to say a word adjective and you tell me what player embodies this the most.

• 30:26Speaker 03

  Oh boy, okay.

• 30:27Speaker 02

You've seen a lot of players come through. Who's the toughest player you've ever coached?

• 30:31Speaker 03

  This is like asking me.

• 30:33Speaker 02

It doesn't, it's not saying nobody else isn't tough, but who's the guy that like stands out to your mind? First player that stands out to you when you say your toughest?

• 30:40Speaker 03

  There's a lot. Lane Dickerson.

• 30:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, I think it's a great answer.

• 30:43Speaker 03

That's a tough guy, man. That, that guy, nobody knows when he goes through each week.

• 30:49Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 30:49Speaker 03

To get on the field, but I, I, I see the tears in his eyes at times. Uh, that, that's a tough dude.

• 30:57Speaker 02

  No doubt. Alright, smartest.

• 31:00Speaker 03

  You.

• 31:01Speaker 02

  Don't say it.

• 31:01Speaker 03

Yeah, there's no question. Everybody knows that.

• 31:04Speaker 02

  Hundred percent.

• 31:04Speaker 03

  We can move on.

• 31:05Speaker 02

  Meanest.

• 31:06Speaker 03

Well, timeout. Can we rewind the film? Cause there, there might be one or two other guys that are at the same level. There's a same level. I don't want to, Isaac Samalow.

• 31:17Speaker 02

To me, Isaac is actually the smartest player I ever played with. Between him and Wiz, those two guys were very intelligent.

• 31:24Speaker 03

High, high level. He had great vision. He could see everything. He played six positions in one game, the Baltimore game, including tight end.

• 31:32Speaker 02

  It's insane.

• 31:33Speaker 03

He played every position along the line in that game as well as the tight end.

• 31:37Speaker 02

Glad you rewound that. Alright, meanest. Doesn't have to be a guy with the Eagles either. Like if you got somebody from college.

• 31:45Speaker 03

  Yeah, meanest.

• 31:49Speaker 03

I coached a long time now.

• 31:51Speaker 02

The game used to be meaner too, in the 80s.

• 31:53Speaker 03

No, there was. My feelings will be hurt. Jason Peters, I saw some things happen on the field a couple of times, like when you get to the, there's a certain point where if he snaps, you don't want to, you don't want to go there. There was some things that's a bad man.

• 32:12Speaker 02

I'll never forget the first one on one I ever saw him do. This is before you got, this is my rookie year. Trent Coles at DN was a great player and Trent beat him on an inside move. And he was pissed, mad. He said, run it back. Oh, hell no, run it back. They line up again. I don't know why Trent tried to go inside again. JP took his palm and hit him so hard in the face mask that he landed on his head, like did a backflip basically. And I remember seeing that, I'm like, dude, I don't know if I can play in the NFL. If these are the guys that are playing, like I don't know if I got what it takes.

• 32:45Speaker 03

I mean, that guy, the size, the quickness and the explosive power, all wrapped up in one. You, you don't come across that. Within 100, I mean, 100 years, you're not going to see someone like that. That was. And great teammate. Yes, great person, great person.

• 33:01Speaker 02

Most improved player you ever coached?

• 33:03Speaker 03

I don't know how you could say that's ridiculous.

• 33:06Speaker 02

I still remember the first day you walked in and like, I mean, you didn't know anything about football. I, I was drafted with Danny Watkins, who also was a guy that played football late, was very green with the game. Didn't know what certain techniques were called, things that I was kind of crazy going to the NFL, that a guy doesn't know this stuff. But you, I mean, you didn't know a pass it. You didn't know where the quarterback was. You didn't know anything was called. Truly like knew nothing about the game. And now you're an all pro. I mean, that's insane. It helps that you're 365 and running 4.7 in our freaking nature, for sure.

• 33:38Speaker 03

  4.7 is generous.

• 33:39Speaker 02

  You don't think you run a 4.7?

• 33:40Speaker 03

  I don't know. Probably, probably is sub 5. Definitely not a 4.7.

• 33:45Speaker 02

No, if your toes weren't webbed, you'd run a 4.7.

• 33:47Speaker 03

  I think I would.

• 33:49Speaker 04

Little cushion, just that little boost.

• 33:52Speaker 02

  It's gotta be him, right?

• 33:53Speaker 03

  I know this, here's what I know. I, I, I think he's being, uh.

• 33:56Speaker 02

  Modest?

• 33:57Speaker 03

Yeah, I think he's being modest. I think he's in a four, seven, four, eight. Like he'll, he would come out on the field early and he has this routine that he would do, but then he would, then he would just take off and open up and run and I'm, and like, I, I'll never forget the workout that, that we did at IMG. I couldn't believe how the size of the, of the player and the quickness and all the, the square drills, the, you know, the shuffle, the karaoke. We, we were doing all kinds of stuff and I was like, oh my goodness. I've never seen anything like this in my life.

• 34:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:31Speaker 03

The size of the player, the quickness, the foot quickness, that's the wow factor. Now you gotta assess the mental part of it. How long is it gonna take?

• 34:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:40Speaker 03

  And is it worth it?

• 34:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:41Speaker 03

And I was adamant about it. It's worth it. And it took a very long time. It went, almost ran out of time.

• 34:47Speaker 02

What was that like for you, that whole process?

• 34:48Speaker 04

Um, I couldn't believe he, they, they drafted me.

• 34:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:53Speaker 04

You know, and the whole time I was here, I was just trying to figure it all out. I didn't know what I was gonna be or what I was gonna sum out to. It's just kind of at first going through the motions, like Stowe said, these conversations when he would come and say, you're not trying hard enough. I got offended.

• 35:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:09Speaker 04

I'd be like, well, I'm trying my ass off. And then, you know, he'd make an example of what effort really looks like. And it was you.

• 35:15Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 35:16Speaker 04

It was the way you came off the field, gasping for air after long, long plays and everything I tried to do was just

• 35:23Speaker 04

again, trying to prove myself to this guy, especially that 2020 year.

• 35:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:28Speaker 04

I got wind that, uh, I was close to getting, getting sent home and so pulled my socks up. Oh, it's Nate.

• 35:36Speaker 02

  Was Nate?

• 35:36Speaker 04

  Herbie.

• 35:37Speaker 02

  Really? What was Herbie?

• 35:38Speaker 04

Oh, you know, little lawyer locker room that man was.

• 35:41Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 35:42Speaker 04

He was, uh, he heard some whisperings and, uh, relayed it back to me and I was like, I gotta pull my pants up.

• 35:49Speaker 03

We had dinner last night. I know wives and we had a nice time and he actually reenacted the whole story. So I want you to tell us right now and use the voice and everything.

• 35:59Speaker 04

  Fucking crazy.

• 36:00Speaker 03

  Do it!

• 36:01Speaker 02

Tell us, you told me this last night, I didn't know anything about this. Right.

• 36:06Speaker 04

He said, "Hey, bro." He said, "Listen."

• 36:09Speaker 02

  It's a great Herbie impersonation.

• 36:10Speaker 04

  He's gonna kill me.

• 36:12Speaker 02

Ah, we love Herbie, go ahead. His tongue's too big for his mouth.

• 36:15Speaker 04

He said, "Man," he said, "Jody, you gotta get in your bag, bro." He's like, "They're gonna ship you home." "So you won't, you won't go home?"

• 36:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:21Speaker 04

"They're gonna ship your ass home." "So you, you, you gotta pull your socks up and get in your bag."

• 36:25Speaker 02

This is a very good Nate Herbie impression.

• 36:27Speaker 04

And then, I got in my bag. I got in my bag, he's like, he's like, "They're gonna send you home, man." It's like, "Come on." No, he was my sleeper, I was his team.

• 36:38Speaker 02

Um, who's the, I guess the last one is leader.

• 36:44Speaker 04

  Who? You?

• 36:46Speaker 02

  I, I don't know, he's not answering.

• 36:47Speaker 03

Yeah, you are the leader. You, you, you, we'll skip it. No, why, you can't take the, uh...

• 36:52Speaker 02

I don't like doing this. All right, who's cage match?

• 36:54Speaker 03

Well, I knew you set the question up. That's, that's who, that's who, like...

• 36:58Speaker 02

I just got a bunch of words down here.

• 36:59Speaker 03

You took every player that was ever in that room, they would answer the, they would answer the question the same way.

• 37:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 37:04Speaker 02

Who, who's winning the cage match?

• 37:06Speaker 04

I'm not gonna lie to you, I'm gonna mistake him with Stout.

• 37:09Speaker 03

But, I mean, Selig was, he was a great leader. But he wasn't in the room.

• 37:12Speaker 02

He wasn't in the room, yeah.

• 37:14Speaker 03

But you did a lot of things in front of the team, in the offensive unit, and, and, yeah.

• 37:21Speaker 02

I think one of the coolest things you did in 2017 was the, started the tradition. You and Stout really started it, which was talking in front of the team the day before the game.

• 37:29Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 37:30Speaker 02

The night before, like, I still remember, cause we, for some reason, we felt like in 2017, in camp, I remember us all looking at each other and being like, "Yeah, we got a, got a really good squad here."

• 37:42Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 37:42Speaker 02

Like, like Garrett, like, all the pieces we added, Alshon, like, the defense, Fletch, and, like, we did, it felt like all the pieces, whereas this is the best amount of talent we had had collectively, and I remember, I don't know which one of you guys thought of it first, or how that hulked, but you came up and talked the day before the first game of the year?

• 38:02Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 38:03Speaker 02

And basically, I don't wanna, you basically said, "Guys, I went to the NFC Championship game my first year in the league."

• 38:11Speaker 04

  Second year, yeah.

• 38:12Speaker 02

Second year in the league, we lost the game, and I figured out, you know what, we'll be back next year, and it's been... Nine seasons and I still haven't been back. Don't waste this opportunity. We got a really good squad. And I think that really started the trajectory that year of like demanding excellence. And guys feeling like we had a swagger and confidence. Where did you come up with that or where did you book?

• 38:35Speaker 05

It actually happened really in the off season because after my 10th season, Howie calls me into the office and he's like, hey, we gotta talk. And so I meet him in the office and he's like, hey, man, um, I know you're owed this, but you know, we want to cut it. And so I literally, I had an agent, but I negotiated my deal with Howie face to face.

• 38:57Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 38:58Speaker 05

  And.

• 38:59Speaker 02

Bold strategy. He's a good negotiator.

• 39:01Speaker 05

He's a good negotiator. But after, after that moment, I realized, you know, I've been around this game for a long time. They start taking your money away and then the next thing is you're out the door.

• 39:14Speaker 02

  Right, yeah.

• 39:14Speaker 05

And so that off season, I kind of, my mindset switched like this is it. This is all I've got is this year.

• 39:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:23Speaker 05

And I know that, um, the Saturday nights before the game stout used to always talk. And he used to always say something. I used to love hearing him talk. But at that moment that I had with Howie, I was like, you know, I gotta be more vocal. I'm gonna do things that, you know, are, you know, help uplift my teammates a little bit more. And I thought it was a, a great thing for me to just show the guys, this is what happened to me.

• 39:51Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 39:51Speaker 05

This is where I'm at today and this year is really all we got.

• 39:55Speaker 02

  Right.

• 39:56Speaker 05

And, uh, what I thought was really cool about it though, is that stout kept it going.

• 40:01Speaker 02

  Right.

• 40:01Speaker 05

You know, the fact that he.

• 40:03Speaker 02

It wasn't a one and done.

• 40:04Speaker 05

And yeah, and the fact that I didn't even know Isaac knew how to speak. And then Isaac gets up there.

• 40:11Speaker 02

Shout out to, shout out to Isaac, yeah.

• 40:12Speaker 05

And, and Isaac pulls, you know, he, he basically puts his heart on the table and like this is who I am. It brought me closer to him. I had no relationship with him.

• 40:22Speaker 02

  I agree.

• 40:23Speaker 05

And to be able to hear my teammate, you Kelsey, you got up there and got emotional. Like to me, those, those really changed, um, I feel like our relationships became stronger. Because we started learning things about each other that we never knew. I thought it was awesome that you did it.

• 40:39Speaker 03

And it was, you could hear a pin drop. You look around the room, a lot of emotional, there was a lot of emotional guys that would get up and speak. Darren Sproles did a great, unbelievable job. I mean, there was a lot of guys would take that very serious. And they get up there and speak from their heart. And I think everybody really looked forward to it.

• 41:01Speaker 02

All right, let's talk, so you're a college coach for the majority of your career. You come from winning two national championships at Alabama. With Nick Saban, Chip Kelly, completely different offense. What were your first impressions coming to Philadelphia and trying to run a brand new offense like that?

• 41:17Speaker 03

Well, I've run about every run play and play action and protection that you have been doing it. I was in college for 30 years.

• 41:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:28Speaker 03

We did a lot at Alabama.

• 41:30Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 41:30Speaker 03

A lot. And that was really a pro organization to be honest with you.

• 41:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:37Speaker 03

And then we come in here and we're in the Temple offense with Chip Kelly. I was so excited to learn something new. That was basically, I mean, we dabbled a little bit with a little fastball play here and there.

• 41:49Speaker 02

  Right.

• 41:50Speaker 03

  Nothing like that.

• 41:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:51Speaker 03

Snap the ball within 25 seconds. Let's go.

• 41:55Speaker 02

I still remember that first Washington game. It was like they could not stop us.

• 41:58Speaker 03

  I remember you coming.

• 42:00Speaker 02

It was insane. We all thought we were going to win the Super Bowl. Like, did we not? They couldn't stop it.

• 42:05Speaker 03

Your enthusiasm and your excitement coming off, you couldn't breathe coming off the field. You're like, Stoudemire, they're begging us to slow down. Throwing up on the field. We got them right where we want them.

• 42:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:19Speaker 03

I think we ran 50 plays.

• 42:21Speaker 02

  In the first half.

• 42:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:22Speaker 05

  That's nuts.

• 42:24Speaker 02

Oh dude, and it was the first kind of its kind in the NFL. It was a, Washington had no idea what to do. And like, that was the first, we didn't have tape out there. Teams did catch on eventually, but to start, it was absolutely outrageous. So Brett, you had been in the league for how many years at that point? Six?

• 42:41Speaker 05

  Six years.

• 42:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:42Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 42:44Speaker 02

Juan Castillo, then offensive line coach.

• 42:45Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 42:46Speaker 02

What were your first impressions with Stout?

• 42:49Speaker 05

Stout, um, I would say initially, he was so passionate when he's installing the run game. You know, he's pounding the table, he's loud. I love that about him.

• 43:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:01Speaker 05

Uh, the other thing that you could tell right away is he cared. And I would say the third thing is you could question things with Stout and he would listen.

• 43:10Speaker 02

  Right.

• 43:11Speaker 05

Sometimes he would tell you, no, you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

• 43:13Speaker 02

  Yeah, no.

• 43:14Speaker 05

But he would listen. So, you know, those three things, he's a passionate guy. Um, he really cares about his players. I think that's probably the most important thing. And I think that's why Stout and I connect so well is because I just see, he does everything for his players.

• 43:30Speaker 02

  Right.

• 43:30Speaker 05

And he wants them to have everything that they could possibly have to succeed in that game. And if he feels he's not giving that, he feels like he's failing.

• 43:38Speaker 02

Yes, well said. I don't think I can say it any better. All you want in a coach is somebody that genuinely wants you to be the best version of yourself.

• 43:47Speaker 05

  Exactly.

• 43:48Speaker 02

And Stout did that for a very long time. If a player feels like a coach has any like ulterior motive or like, there's like a selfish intrinsic desire out of it. You just don't enjoy it as much, or you like it, fuck this dude.

• 43:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 44:00Speaker 02

All right. All these great players, one of the things you were phenomenal at is gauging players before they became great. Jordan Mailata, Lane Johnson, drafting players to Philadelphia. When you go to a combine or you're looking at a player, what is the number one most important? I already know the answer. What's the most important thing that you're looking for to determine whether he's going to be a good offensive lineman?

• 44:22Speaker 03

With all these questions, there's more than one, but you gotta have the size.

• 44:26Speaker 02

  All right.

• 44:26Speaker 03

No, no, listen to me. So I start, I have a flow chart.

• 44:30Speaker 02

  Yeah, you got critical factors.

• 44:31Speaker 03

And I follow in it. First of all, where are you with the size? Are you average? Are you preferred? Are you ideal? Okay. Where do you fall?

• 44:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:39Speaker 03

  Okay, ideal.

• 44:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:40Speaker 03

Okay, so now, the most important, critical factor would be foot and body quickness.

• 44:46Speaker 02

Yeah. I thought for sure you were going to say ankle flexion. Why is ankle flexion so important?

• 44:51Speaker 03

So this is the best way to say it. If you, if I'm the wide receiver and you're the defensive back and you're in a stance and I'm running off the ball and you're in a backpedal.

• 45:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:01Speaker 03

You're trying to cover me. You're backpedaling. And then I. Break to the out cut and the quarterback shows his shows his shoulders and he's gonna throw the ball. As you're backpedaling, if you're able to plant and if you're able to plant and break, I guarantee you, you have lower body flexibility. If you went plant, plant, plant, break, you probably have average lower body. Now, this is accurate. This holds up across the board. This isn't just for offensive lineman. This was for all positions. And so, lower body flexibility is relative to explosive power.

• 45:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:42Speaker 03

Change of direction, but you're gonna find some guys that can flat out run fast.

• 45:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:50Speaker 03

That don't have great lower body flexibility.

• 45:52Speaker 02

Interesting. So, it's more change of direction and agility.

• 45:56Speaker 03

  Explosive power.

• 45:57Speaker 02

  Got it.

• 45:58Speaker 03

Okay. Once I decide that that's a very important factor, then I'm all in.

• 46:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:02Speaker 03

I'm all in, but I have to see it in my brain. I have to feel it. I don't just do like these low hands things. Nobody does. I have to know for a fact that that works.

• 46:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:14Speaker 03

  Then I'm all in.

• 46:15Speaker 02

Then you're in. And the saying I think you use the most though throughout your whole career was hungry dogs run faster.

• 46:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 46:20Speaker 02

  Where did that come from?

• 46:21Speaker 03

So, when I was a young, when I was a young, uh, uh, high school player and, um, I belonged at a YMCA. That's all we could kinda afford was the YMCA. So, I would go to the YMCA with a couple of my teammates. We didn't have good facilities at my high school. So, we would go to the YMCA and we would, we would lift. And there was a guy in there who was huge, strong, I mean, real strong. His name was Dino Mangiero. Played for the Kansas City Chiefs. He actually is the player that broke Dan Pastorelli's leg way back in the day. He's actually the player that won the strongest man in the NFL arm wrestle. Dino played nose tackle for Rutgers, for Curtis High School, Rutgers.

• 47:04Speaker 03

These guys, all they did was work out at the YMCA. I mean, they worked out. So, Dino was like, come on, well, Dennis Riley, come on, you're coming with me. And we would go run through Clover Lakes Park, through the trees, over the tree. And we would be like, I'd be dying. These guys would be jumping over trees. Like, you remember how you said to me, I didn't know what toughness was until my strength coach at Cincinnati taught me. That was my moment.

• 47:27Speaker 02

  Got it.

• 47:27Speaker 03

And that was my moment. And these guys would keep saying to me, hungry dogs run fast. You don't stop. You keep pushing. You keep going. And what you're going to do is you're going to build so much confidence in yourself, you're going to feel like nobody can beat you. And I embraced that.

• 47:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:43Speaker 03

I braced it right through college. And I just was like, that was me. That was the epitome of, I'm going to work harder than you, not only as a player, but even as a coach, as I took it further. And I wanted to instill that in all the players. And we did that in our individual drills. And it basically became who I, who I am, or who I was, how I went about coaching, how I went about explaining things to the players. And so, that, that came from Dino.

• 48:11Speaker 02

All right. 2017 season, we go on, win this Super Bowl, first time in Eagles history. At what point in that season, did you realize that the team was special? Is there a moment? Or is there a play? Or is there?

• 48:22Speaker 03

I, I, I just, look, you asked me a question, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna answer the question. You might not like the answer. I don't, I don't care.

• 48:31Speaker 02

  All right.

• 48:31Speaker 03

Okay. Frank Reich was the offensive coordinator, and he, he, you know, he would be like, Stoudt, you got juice today. Like, he was, he would kind of needle me a little bit about the run installation meeting, which you talked about. I would get up in front of the offense, and I would do the run game installation. And really, before I would put any play in, I would present to everybody, and I would say, you know, this is the mission statement on this play.

• 48:57Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 48:58Speaker 03

We're going to displace the interior two tackles. And if we don't do that, this play's not going to work.

• 49:04Speaker 02

  Right.

• 49:04Speaker 03

Or we're running a mid-zone play, and Jordan, if you don't displace that D end, we can't run this play. And so, everybody knew, going in, Where that important, very, very important block was. And then I would say, we're gonna come in here Nelson Aguirre on Monday or Tuesday, and we're gonna see if you blocked the safety on Wham, because if you do, you deserve all the credit. For all those Whams that we ran at the Chicago and the Seattle, you're the one that deserves the credit. Not Kelsey again at the second level, but you do it because you blocked the force player, and the force player is the most important block. And I would do that through all the run concepts, and everybody knew exactly what was what.

• 49:48Speaker 03

But I'm gonna tell you what, when I would do that, I would occasionally, as I'm into my, doing my thing, I would see Smitty, I would see Alshon Jeffrey, I'd see Nelson Aguirre, I'd see those, I'd see Mac.

• 50:01Speaker 02

  Mac Collins.

• 50:02Speaker 03

And those guys would be like this. I didn't expect that.

• 50:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:06Speaker 03

I didn't think that the receiver would be looking at me like that. I expect the offensive lineman or the tight end to be like, alright, I understand, I use the phrase, you guys know it, you've heard it, it's execution fuels emotion.

• 50:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:21Speaker 03

And I don't know how to say it any better than that. Kevin Kelly and I worked way back in 1984 together. We would talk about, he would talk about this with me. There's no better way to describe the excitement, the jubilation of a great play or a great series, when your execution fuels emotion. If you're not executing, you're not having fun. You're not, you're not feeling it. You're not bumping into each other, you're not hogging each other, you're not... So that phrase became something I would use quite often, because it says it all.

• 50:54Speaker 02

What about you? Was there a point in that year that...

• 50:56Speaker 05

I think every year you feel like, we have a really good team.

• 51:00Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 51:01Speaker 05

I think after, I believe it was the second...

• 51:03Speaker 02

You don't go to a season being like, hey, we're not gonna win this year, but we're gonna suck this year, like...

• 51:07Speaker 05

The real moment for me was when we were in LA, and Carson got hurt, and Nick comes in the game.

• 51:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:14Speaker 05

And the feeling on the sideline with some of the guys that I was around, it was just like, damn, not us again. You know, Carson at that moment was MVP.

• 51:24Speaker 02

  Would have been.

• 51:25Speaker 05

And then Nick comes in, and Nick starts slinging it. And I'll just never forget the feeling in the locker room after that game. And Malcolm gave his speech and it was just like next man up mentality.

• 51:38Speaker 02

I agree. That was a crazy moment in that season.

• 51:41Speaker 05

Throughout the entire season, it was that way, but that was the biggest moment. And, um, and how Nick responded to all that, I thought was unbelievable.

• 51:49Speaker 02

Nick handled it unbelievably. It ended up working out to our favor, I think a little bit because Nick came in and was different than Carson.

• 51:55Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 51:56Speaker 02

And he liked different plays and we switched it up at the perfect time in the season. But you had the nail on the head too, Stott, with saying that it was a great blend of like personalities and people. And like Carson was great, but like Legere Blunt was like an unreal teammate and personality to have in there. Jay Ajayi added him halfway through the season was fantastic. A young Isaac and like some of the players we had in the depths that were ready to play.

• 52:22Speaker 03

  Corey Clement.

• 52:23Speaker 02

  Corey Clement.

• 52:24Speaker 03

  Those three running backs.

• 52:26Speaker 02

  It was awesome.

• 52:27Speaker 03

We had fun. We had a lot of fun.

• 52:28Speaker 02

And that was after Darren Sproles got hurt.

• 52:30Speaker 03

Yeah. Darren Sproles and JP got hurt.

• 52:33Speaker 02

We lost probably two of our, we lost our three best players, probably, right? Our best offensive lineman was Jason Peet before he got hurt. Our best running back is probably Sproles and we lost our starting quarterback. Still went on.

• 52:44Speaker 03

But I do think that, uh, what you just said about Nick. Cause once Carson got hurt, I felt the same, I felt like everybody was like, well, there it goes. We were having such a great season.

• 52:56Speaker 02

Feel that way till after the game was I was still trying to block Aaron Thomas.

• 52:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 53:01Speaker 05

But after the game, I felt that way.

• 53:02Speaker 03

But, but, but after the game was finished, I think that, that was, that, that thought process was kind of removed. I thought, I thought, I thought it was like, okay, we're back.

• 53:12Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 53:13Speaker 03

Do you remember shaking me like this, like?

• 53:15Speaker 05

  After the Super Bowl?

• 53:16Speaker 03

It wasn't after the Super Bowl. It was in the third or fourth quarter. You were shaking me and I was like, I had my pad in my hand and you would, and you were going, Nick's playing out of his mind. I was like, okay, bro, we gotta, we gotta keep going. I, I want, it was right close to when uh, we kicked the field, Elliott kicked the field goal. That field goal was huge.

• 53:39Speaker 02

Yeah, the big plays are obviously the Philly special, but fourth down conversions with Ertz.

• 53:42Speaker 03

  There was so many.

• 53:43Speaker 02

All right, let's fast forward to the year that we weren't there.

• 53:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 53:47Speaker 02

What was special about that year? When did you know that, that season? That, that team had a true win?

• 53:53Speaker 03

  Go ahead.

• 53:54Speaker 04

I mean, to me, I didn't, it didn't feel like there was like a moment.

• 54:00Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 54:00Speaker 04

It just was like each game was its own every week. If there was a game I could pick, probably be that L.A. Rams game and that so far.

• 54:07Speaker 03

Keep picking on the Rams. Yeah.

• 54:09Speaker 04

It is what it is, man. It is what it is, man. That was, that really fucking big game. That was the, that was the one game where I thought like, Sunday night, we played lights out and it was a just complete nomination up front in the running game. It was, it felt like a very complete game for us.

• 54:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 54:27Speaker 04

The defense was playing lights out. And I think that was probably the moment for me at least where I was like, hey, man, we, we have something special. Very late in the season, but how we were playing or how I was playing that season was just kind of taking each game.

• 54:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 54:39Speaker 04

Week to week. And I mean, everyone wants to talk about bye week, after the bye week, week five, Browns come out home game. That's when we started, we started our little win streak.

• 54:50Speaker 03

  How was that that game?

• 54:51Speaker 04

And you know, it was, we just won. So you know, that was the thing, ignition, I guess the igniter for the, the way we, we kind of went on, but I'm gonna say, what about you?

• 55:02Speaker 03

Well, when uh, when Howie uh, you know, was able to get Saquon

• 55:08Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 55:08Speaker 03

to come here, I felt like uh, watching him, uh, th- th- these guys, we talked about some of these play, other players here earlier, but those guys don't come around very often and, and watching some of the things that, that he was able to do. And I just felt like with the offensive line that we had combined with him and our, and really the whole running back group that uh, We would have some great things that would happen and all he needed was if we could block them up front and create the voids needed, any given play at any given time could go to distance.

• 55:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:47Speaker 03

He had that breakaway speed. He had the ability to see stuff, whether it be front side or backside. And there were so many plays during the course of the season that were big, you know, that were chunk runs, even on third down. We were running the ball against these exotic defensive fronts and putting a fear of God in people like, you want to play this front? Go ahead. And so, yeah, I just, I just think that was a huge part of, of, and we were so, the players were so confident, much like the quarterback sneak play. The confidence level that you guys had running that play two years ago was like, there's no way this is organized mass.

• 56:30Speaker 03

And by the way, all these combination blocks that you talked about and these techniques are individual, that is organized mass, but it's two.

• 56:36Speaker 02

  You're right.

• 56:37Speaker 03

It's all organized. It's all mentality of organized mass. The teaching is all the same. And so you just, and the confidence level, you know, of the players, I felt that way with the run game with him, with Saquon. And the players did such a great job of executing all these combination blocks, getting to the second level, finishing, and we rode it. We, we, we, we stayed with it all year.

• 57:00Speaker 04

Right. Just one of those things, I guess, the momentum at the right time. We peed at the right time and we just rode that momentum.

• 57:07Speaker 02

They have the talent while everything else was coming together.

• 57:11Speaker 05

I think something has to be said about when you have a running back that is that good. I just feel like the O-line, the tight ends, everybody just blocks that much harder. Like when we had LeGarrette in 2017.

• 57:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:25Speaker 05

You know, well, really all our running backs in 2017, but like those guys that just bring it, you, you don't want your guy to make the tackle.

• 57:33Speaker 02

Yeah, when they're going balls to the wall, all out, running hard, it makes you block harder. And it's the same thing, it's, execution fuels emotion. So like the more success you're handling with something, the more you're excited to do it.

• 57:45Speaker 04

Yeah, Saquon was basically an out bench the whole year. Just talking about plays that just whatever happened on that drive. He was like, let's fix it up. What happened? He told me and he clear up his vision and then we go out there.

• 57:58Speaker 03

He would do a flyby and he would say, uh, that one guy, you get that one guy, I'm gone.

• 58:03Speaker 04

  Gone.

• 58:04Speaker 03

The next time we get that one guy. So then you'd see him finishing on the backside. I could pull out some clips. I know exactly what plays, what games on the backside where he's just straining and straining. Whereas when he was young, he didn't know how to do that. He didn't even know, have a clue how to strain, how to finish. But that pops the run for the touchdown, Kansas City game. I mean, I can go the LA game. I can go through the list of him on the backside where he's straining and finishing. And Saquon would do a flyby and say, just get that one guy.

• 58:33Speaker 02

You got an endless amount of sayings. You got hungry dogs run faster. No man is an animal. Mr. Strang's from others. Executing fuels emotion. There's some funnier ones out there. You said, I don't know that guy from Adam's house cat before. I still don't know what that means or where it came from.

• 58:46Speaker 04

I thought it was an American saying. So I said it to Nikki and Nikki goes, I don't, that's not a thing.

• 58:53Speaker 04

I'm like, what do you mean? I'm like, what do you mean it's not a thing? Like Stouts is all the time. It's like, that must be a Stoutism because I've never heard of that. So who is Adam's house cat?

• 59:02Speaker 03

  Coach Saban would say it.

• 59:05Speaker 04

  He doesn't know.

• 59:06Speaker 03

Adam's house cat was somebody's cat.

• 59:10Speaker 02

What about, uh, pounding salt up a fat lady's ass?

• 59:15Speaker 03

  That's just a visionary of.

• 59:18Speaker 04

  Visionary aid.

• 59:19Speaker 02

Tough, funny play. What do you call a wide open gaping hole? What's that called?

• 59:23Speaker 04

  Oh my God.

• 59:25Speaker 03

  That's Al Barber. That's not.

• 59:26Speaker 04

That's Al Barber. We're blaming Al for that.

• 59:29Speaker 03

I'll defer that to Al because he owns cows.

• 59:31Speaker 02

There you go. Listen, we're, we're, we're kind of being funny here though.

• 59:34Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 59:35Speaker 02

But one of the things I think made you an outstanding coach was it wasn't just a lecture at the top of the meeting room. There was, you would say these things or pick your voice up in a way to institute, you used to call it a hook. Which was if you wanted a player to remember something, you would say, this is the hook. This is, you would say these phrases or these little things technique wise to get the player to remember it. So that when they're out on the field, there was, they would, they would snap and they would know exactly what we talked about in the meeting.

• 1:00:13Speaker 03

True. And also, if you remember, and I don't know.

• 1:00:18Speaker 03

I don't know why, I think sometimes I would even go drift off into a life lesson.

• 1:00:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:25Speaker 03

And I would raise my voice and I'd be like, look, you're not doing this forever. This situation is going to come later on in life.

• 1:00:36Speaker 03

Do the right thing, save yourself a lot of grief.

• 1:00:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:38Speaker 03

Or whatever, or whatever, whatever that situation was. We spent so much time together, all of us. And you get to know each other so well, you get to know your girlfriends, you get to know your wives, our wife, my wife.

• 1:00:52Speaker 02

  And Allison.

• 1:00:53Speaker 03

You just get the, the feeling of caring about someone so much that if you could do something, you know, just a little bit to maybe help a guy later on. And I would do that occasionally in, in our, in our meetings.

• 1:01:04Speaker 02

You just said, don't make the mistake because you're not, I immediately I thought of, what's the, what's the one? Eighty percent of the time, the easy way is the wrong way.

• 1:01:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:01:15Speaker 02

You want to take the easy route and it's great in the moment, but usually it ends up backfiring on you in the long run.

• 1:01:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:01:21Speaker 02

What would be one thing that you would want people to know about Stout and like? How he is as a coach? It's not like a misunderstood thing, but what do you think makes Stout a great coach?

• 1:01:31Speaker 04

For me, how much of a father figure he was?

• 1:01:34Speaker 02

Yeah, it wasn't just about the coaching, it was everything he just said, it was like caring about you as a person.

• 1:01:39Speaker 04

Fucking 10 minutes and it's just like that.

• 1:01:42Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:01:43Speaker 04

  Just like that.

• 1:01:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:50Speaker 04

I mean, everyone thinks that, you know, everyone thinks they know like what kind of father figure he is, but.

• 1:01:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:54Speaker 04

When we moved in here, I was just, just turned 21.

• 1:01:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:58Speaker 04

A big family guy, left my family, back home. Left my parents.

• 1:02:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:02:06Speaker 04

  And.

• 1:02:09Speaker 04

Yeah, this crazy guy. I believe in this kid who never played football before and was trying to make a make a name for himself. And I can't get over how he was always consistent. He's always there. But he always believed in me and he was always the last one to believe in me. And it wasn't like the lessons on the field of, you know, that's that's his job. That's his job as a coach, but the lessons he taught me as a man.

• 1:02:36Speaker 04

But always showing up as a father figure for me when, you know, my family's so far away. And I mean, he knows, probably doesn't know, but like, right. Now I'll call you papa, you know that. You know, I'll call you papa, like.

• 1:02:51Speaker 03

  He's always called me papa.

• 1:02:53Speaker 04

Call you papa, man, because just that I just needed. For me, I needed, I feel like I was a young man come here and didn't really know who I was. You know, really still a young adult. And I didn't know what I stood for, what I was going to stand for, what I believed in. And he's just, for me, he kind of set me in my ways of hard work beats everything. But I thought I knew, and he said it earlier, like, I thought I knew what hard work looked like. But I didn't know anything. I was young, I was very naive. And Stoudemire has taught me so much about the one thing. And but you see too, Kev, everything I tried to do was emulate how you led.

• 1:03:35Speaker 04

And I just carry that on to the next to next group as best I could, the way I practiced, the way I finished every snap, the way I played in games. But it started from coached out and started with you and I just just pick and choose what I needed to do to become the player that I became and what I've become. And man, I was just very lucky to be in this situation where, you know, I've had. Great coach, a great locker room and people to bring me along. You never needed to do that.

• 1:04:07Speaker 02

It's one of the reasons I think the Eagles have been so successful is even throughout change, they've kept pieces in part. So like I learned from Brent and Todd and those guys learned from Dawkins and like there's been a transition period with the Eagles where players have learned from players. You were the offensive line coach for the Philadelphia Eagles through four different head coaches. How many times has that happened in the NFL? Never. Not that I know of.

• 1:04:36Speaker 03

  Yeah, I don't know.

• 1:04:37Speaker 02

What Jordy just said is beautiful and I'll piggyback on that. I feel the same way. But I also feel like the hungry dogs run faster is what you've been as a coach. There's been a hunger and a desire to get like an genuine caring for your players that has allowed all of these guys to maximize their ability. And I don't think it's any surprise that a guy that's never played football, that has all the physical attributes, has turned into one of the best tackles in the league. Guys have come from other places, castaways, Mackay-Beckton, nobody wants them anymore. Comes here, wins a Super Bowl, has a career year. You get the best out of them. You get the best out of me. You get the best. I mean, it's endless.

• 1:05:16Speaker 02

And the technique, absolutely. The plays, the guys next to you. But the overwhelming thing is you could not go into that fucking room without being ready each and every day. You weren't going to accept it. So everybody had to acknowledge that. So for that, we all, as former players, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. He gave us everything he had and as players, that's all you want. I don't know what's next for you. I mean, I know you're taking the year off. Whether you coach again or whatever you do, I just consider it a great blessing. I think all of us that were Philadelphia Eagles that were with you do. So, thanks.

• 1:05:52Speaker 03

Thank you. I love you guys. I really appreciate doing this. This has brought up some really, really good memories. I can't tell you guys enough how, when I think of my time coaching you, Jason, and you, and doing our mate blocks, and doing our, and stuff that we did as a group, the joy that brings me, and the happiness that that brings me, because you guys believed in me, you trusted me. All I was able to do, I think there's a very important little point here with all the stuff we've talked about, but if you find one thing about a player like you, like I would say to you, Jason, could you imagine what you could be like if you just used your hands right?

• 1:06:36Speaker 03

If you just had a little bit narrower base in your stance, and you didn't overextend in full step, don't get crazy on me, just listen to me. If you could just apply this and try this, this is gonna go like this. Get the backside arm on that cutoff block.

• 1:06:51Speaker 02

  I still never got that.

• 1:06:52Speaker 03

Don't use, yeah, don't use the two hands.

• 1:06:55Speaker 02

That's because I used the freaking loop outside here.

• 1:06:57Speaker 03

Yeah, and so, or I would say, I would show, uh, uh, uh, Jordan, if you just kick us twice, and this is from Jason Peters, right, from him, right, from his Bible, he'd say, kick us, kick as fast you can twice and get to that spot. You just get to that spot, all good things are gonna happen. And he'd say, and I would listen to him, I'd say, he goes, that's all I do. I don't care about anything. I'll just tell Kelsey to tell me who to, I don't want to be bogged down. I want to get to that spot. Nobody did it better than him. And then Lane would watch, and then he would do it. And so, to watch all this stuff go on and happen, it was so much, it was like a, a, a magic, it was like an artist painting a painting. It was like so beautiful,

• 1:07:39Speaker 03

and so much fun. And so, for that, I thank you guys, from the bottom of my heart.

• 1:07:46Speaker 02

You're the best, though. What, uh, I gotta, I forgot to ask you, who are you gonna miss most in the building? Because we're talking about his players, but I think you were maybe even more loved by the staff, and the way you treated them.

• 1:07:57Speaker 04

  Hundred percent.

• 1:07:58Speaker 02

T-Roy has asked me already four times about how you're doing. I think T-Roy might be the most upset of everybody.

• 1:08:04Speaker 03

Yeah. I gave T-Roy. He's wearing a lot of my T-shirts and my shorts. T-Roy is a hardworking guy and he's been around a long time like myself and and everybody, the support staff in that building, the cafeteria people, because I get up, I'm an early bird, so I would always see Miss Keisha and I would see Charles down there and early guys and Roman and those guys would all be there early and we'd have a little coffee together and then, you know, you got Pat Dolan and his crew up there, you know, and all those guys that have helped over the years and then Steve Owen in the training

• 1:08:46Speaker 03

room with, like, I can't tell you for so many years that, you know, giving, I would also say, here's another one that you forgot, was give of yourself to your teammates.

• 1:08:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:08:56Speaker 03

How much are you willing to give of yourself to your teammate? Well, that building is loaded with people who are, who give of themselves to the players, the coaches, just try to help and make their job a little bit easier. You know what? Not everybody's like that, so that was a special place for me and all those people very special to me.

• 1:09:15Speaker 04

  Thanks, Tony.

• 1:09:16Speaker 03

  Yeah. Thank you, guys.

• 1:09:18Speaker 02
