Martin Freeman

We have Emmy & BAFTA winning actor Martin Freeman joining us for dinner this week! And he may have a filthier mind than me! In the midst of rehearsals for his new play, mum served up a delicious Ginger Pig lamb with an array of gorgeous sides for Martin. We heard all about his love of musicals (especially West Side Story), how he nearly became a professional squash player in his youth, how he gave up being a vegetarian after 25 years, what it’s like being the youngest of 5 children, and we hear about the exciting new play he is starring in with Jack Lowden. We laughed throughout this whole episode, Martin was a total dream dinner party guest (even if he had given up puddings for lent!). Martin’s show ‘The Fifth Step’ opens at ‘@SohoPlace' on 12th May and runs through to the end of July. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacy for more information.

• 2:31Jessie Ware?

Hello and welcome to Table manners. I'm here sat in Lenny's living room. You're looking very glamorous, Lenny.

• 2:38Speaker 06

I don't think I look glamorous at all.

• 2:39Jessie Ware?

You look chic. I'd say you look chic.

• 2:41Speaker 06

Lipstick makes you look chic, darling.

• 2:42Jessie Ware?

  How are you, Mum?

• 2:44Speaker 06

Great, darling. How are you? Sun's out.

• 2:47Jessie Ware?

I know. Yeah, the sun is going away tomorrow, isn't it? It's been a beautiful week and, um, am I okay? I've been dealing with children with tummy bugs. Very long tummy bugs at the moment. I don't know if anybody else has had that one. That was fun. Been writing songs. Yeah. I went to a new opening, One Club Row, which was really cool. Really good spot. This guy who used to live in New York, one of the restaurateurs. And then the other guy is the guy who, um, the guy, his name's James, um, has Campbell Arms, has Frank's in Peckham, has Bambi in Hoxton, lots of London places. I'm sorry, guys. Um, but yeah, One Club Row was really cool. It was where the, um, Le Toit Gasson used to be.

• 3:32Jessie Ware?

Was that? Yeah. Le Toit Gasson, the three interior designers. It's in that building. They've made it into a pub underneath that does really good chicken. And then they've done a really nice restaurant upstairs and they're gonna like have a pianist there and stuff. It's very New York. Had a delicious martini. Also shout out to Pappy that I went to, uh, Fortieth in Hackney. Annoyingly, lots of very good restaurants are in Hackney and that's quite inconvenient for me. Um, but Pappy and their fried chicken.

• 3:58Speaker 06

Have you been in at all this week? I thought, oh, your children were sick and you've eaten out three nights.

• 4:02Jessie Ware?

That was on Saturday. Thank you very much. A lunchtime where you had the children. Thank you, Lenny. And one was on Tuesday. And I got my birth chart done, astrology chart. But yes, I have been dealing with sick buckets as well. Is that okay? Are you judging me, Lenny?

• 4:18Speaker 06

Not judging. I'm just looking at the work life balance here.

• 4:21Jessie Ware?

Yeah, it's fantastic at the moment, actually. I'm loving it. I never want to go on tour ever again. Um, so we have Martin Freeman coming on the podcast today. He is in a new play that was in Edinburgh two years ago with Jack Lowden.

• 4:36Speaker 06

Can you just say how excited I am to see this iconic actor?

• 4:41Jessie Ware?

I don't know, you can say it.

• 4:43Speaker 06

Okay, fine, I'm going to say it.

• 4:45Jessie Ware?

  How excited are you?

• 4:46Speaker 06

Very, very, very, because I think he's an immense actor.

• 4:51Jessie Ware?

  Incredible.

• 4:52Speaker 06

When you think of all the different parts he's played, um, you know, from.

• 4:56Jessie Ware?

  Tim from The Office.

• 4:58Speaker 06

  Tim from The Office.

• 4:59Jessie Ware?

Did you watch The Office, Mum?

• 5:00Speaker 06

Of course I did. Bilbo, is it Bilbo Baggins he is? Yeah, yeah.

• 5:04Jessie Ware?

What's the other bloke from Sherlock? Watson, he was Watson.

• 5:08Speaker 06

He was Watson. He was with our mate Daisy Haggard of.

• 5:11Jessie Ware?

  Embreeders.

• 5:12Speaker 06

  Embreeders.

• 5:13Jessie Ware?

Um, which is his baby, actually, I think. I think he kind of created that one. Fargo.

• 5:17Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 5:18Jessie Ware?

The very, the very interesting Minnesotan accent. And now he is going to.

• 5:24Speaker 06

  The Responder.

• 5:24Jessie Ware?

Uh, he was in the Pinter, um, season that, that, he played with Danny Dyer, didn't he? I think they were in the play together.

• 5:30Speaker 06

  We'll ask him about that.

• 5:31Jessie Ware?

So we'll ask him about how he felt about, uh, Danny's pauses, Pinter pauses. Um, and now he is going to Soho Place, the new theatre in Tottenham Court Road, and playing opposite Jack Lowden from, well, Jack Lowden, who is.

• 5:47Speaker 06

  In Slow Horses.

• 5:48Jessie Ware?

Slow Horses, um, husband of, um, Saoirse Ronan.

• 5:51Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 5:52Jessie Ware?

And now the new Darcy mum.

• 5:55Speaker 06

  I know.

• 5:56Jessie Ware?

Anyway, so Jack and Martin are in a new play.

• 5:59Speaker 06

  But also Jesse the Responder.

• 6:02Jessie Ware?

Oh, yeah, the Responder, he's up for the BAFTA for the second season.

• 6:04Speaker 06

I know, because he's so wonderful in it.

• 6:07Jessie Ware?

He's so good, that is a very heartbreaking show.

• 6:10Speaker 06

  Playing that part.

• 6:11Jessie Ware?

We can ask him in a minute, he'll be in five minutes.

• 6:13Speaker 06

  And that Scouse accent.

• 6:15Jessie Ware?

Oh, the Scouse accent was amazing.

• 6:17Speaker 06

  Amazing.

• 6:18Jessie Ware?

Um, that, the, the script on that is just so good, the stories. But he's coming here to talk about the new play that he's starting this summer with Jack Lowden, um, at Soho Place, and it's called The Fifth Step.

• 6:30Speaker 06

I just hope he likes the meal because I couldn't get tickets on the night I wanted.

• 6:36Jessie Ware?

You text me, were like, do you want to go to this? Absolutely, yes. Couldn't get tickets. It's sold out probably in a second. Um, and so, yeah, I think it starts in May.

• 6:46Speaker 06

Do you think we can schmooze a bit, Jess?

• 6:47Jessie Ware?

Absolutely, Mum. Bottle of wine, that'll do it.

• 6:51Speaker 06

Slightly worried that he's given us forewarning he won't eat dessert.

• 6:55Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I'm interested about this. Does he have to get his kit off?

• 6:58Speaker 06

  I'm.

• 6:58Jessie Ware?

  In the show?

• 6:59Speaker 06

I think when he sees what I've made, he thinks, fuck it.

• 7:02Jessie Ware?

Let's see how much self restraint.

• 7:04Speaker 06

  Yeah, let's see.

• 7:05Jessie Ware?

He has. And let's respect that. If he doesn't want it, I will respect that willpower.

• 7:10Speaker 06

  Right, right.

• 7:10Jessie Ware?

  What have you made, Mum?

• 7:11Speaker 06

So I've done a lamb recipe from the Sunlight and Bredcombs.

• 7:15Jessie Ware?

  Your favourite.

• 7:17Speaker 06

Good old Rene Dixon. And so it's got, it's kind of been marinating all day in ginger and savoury leaves. Do you know what savoury leaves are? Well, it's, you can put any sort of, kind of, the normal sage and things like that. So it's olive oil, garlic, as you can, I think, smell throughout the house, anchovies and ginger. And it's on the lamb. So I've made that. And I've done these potatoes from Georgina Hayden's.

• 7:48Jessie Ware?

  Love Georgie.

• 7:49Speaker 06

  So it's.

• 7:49Jessie Ware?

  Which one, which cookbook?

• 7:51Speaker 06

  It's Greekish.

• 7:53Jessie Ware?

  Uh huh.

• 7:53Speaker 06

So they're like little sliced potatoes that you stand up. And then you put olive oil, lemon and fresh oregano on them.

• 8:02Jessie Ware?

  Yum.

• 8:03Speaker 06

And they're in the oven baking away.

• 8:05Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous. So it's quite Greek.

• 8:06Speaker 06

Quite Greek, I like, yeah. And then I've made a salad of courgette, carrot and walnut, with, done in yoghurt. Yeah, I think it's quite nice, yeah.

• 8:18Jessie Ware?

Mum, you've really pushed the door down.

• 8:19Speaker 06

I have for Martin. Pushed it right up for Martin. I really want the tickets, Jess. And then.

• 8:25Jessie Ware?

For the pudding that Martin's maybe not going to have.

• 8:27Speaker 06

  It's a tart recipe.

• 8:29Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 8:29Speaker 06

Which is a Spanish lemon cake. You make it without butter. It's done with olive oil, lemons. It's got rosemary in it. And then on the top is cream mascarpone honey.

• 8:41Jessie Ware?

  Lenny?

• 8:43Speaker 06

Yeah. He's missing out if he doesn't have a bit of pudding.

• 8:47Jessie Ware?

Well, listen, on his off menu, his final thing was a lemon meringue pie. So I feel like it would be hard for him to.

• 8:54Speaker 06

Yeah, I think it would be hard for him to resist that.

• 8:56Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Um, Martin Freeman coming up on Tater Mamas.

• 9:07Jessie Ware?

  Cheers.

• 9:08Speaker 06

  Cheers darling.

• 9:08Jessie Ware?

  Lechaim.

• 9:09Speaker 07

Lechaim, very nice to see you. Nice to see you.

• 9:12Speaker 06

I must mention one thing, since we're talking about sex.

• 9:15Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 9:16Speaker 06

Did you know that Jason Isaacs, you know when he does the full frontal? That's prosthetic.

• 9:21Speaker 07

  I would imagine so.

• 9:21Speaker 06

  I'm so upset.

• 9:22Speaker 07

No, I would think so. It's one of those weird things that even though it's probably a good likeness, I just don't think you can have someone's knob on the table.

• 9:30Jessie Ware?

Did he have, did he have his willy out at the, in White Lotus?

• 9:33Speaker 06

He opens his chest and all his children go, ah!

• 9:37Speaker 07

Yeah, so his robe is open and you see, you know, you see his penis.

• 9:40Speaker 06

  You saw it, didn't you?

• 9:41Speaker 07

You do. Do you know Jason?

• 9:42Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 9:43Speaker 07

  He's lovely. He's really nice.

• 9:44Jessie Ware?

But it's very, it's been interesting, the whole White Lotus thing, because I was thinking about like, I mean, not that I read the don't know at all.

• 9:52Speaker 07

No, you write for it, don't you? You just have a column.

• 9:56Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, I'm 3am actually.

• 9:57Speaker 07

  So does Jason, I see.

• 9:58Jessie Ware?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I was, like, they're trying to make a whole thing about, like, this rift because of something that Jason Isaacs said about it being like Lord of the Flies and like summer camp. Because it was kind of, you were living and breathing and you were living in this resort.

• 10:12Speaker 06

Everyone hated each other. They didn't get on.

• 10:14Jessie Ware?

No, but I was, I listened to your Off Menu episode, which was really lovely. And you were talking about, like, method. Well, there was a Jim Carrey thing, was it Man on the Moon?

• 10:24Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 10:25Jessie Ware?

And you had things to say about that.

• 10:26Speaker 07

I did, and I sort of, I only partially regretted it because I meant everything I said about that particular thing. I actually really liked Jim Carrey.

• 10:33Jessie Ware?

No, I'm sure, yeah, I'm sure.

• 10:34Speaker 07

He's made me laugh a lot, and I don't know him, but he's made me laugh more times than he hasn't. And I do think he's really good. It was just that particular thing of, that particular method he thinks doesn't float my boat.

• 10:44Jessie Ware?

I mean, I now want to watch that, so I'm gonna go and watch it.

• 10:47Speaker 07

  It's a very interesting documentary.

• 10:48Jessie Ware?

But I, but I was thinking, because it was Walton Goggins, apparently was very method in The White Lotus, and we're not just gonna talk about method acting on Food Podcasts.

• 10:58Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 10:59Jessie Ware?

But I was just thinking, like...

• 11:02Jessie Ware?

That would be, that would suck. You're like basically on Hollybobs for like seven months, like have a good time, bro.

• 11:07Speaker 07

I remember someone said, I can't remember who it was, or it was someone with a good turn of phrase, or someone made the very good point of why does no one ever stay method when you're not being a cunt? Like, you know, just, just, like, why, why does no one stay in character really, really hard when they're just being lovely and fun? Do you know what I mean? It's always when you've got to be, um.

• 11:24Speaker 06

  It's serious.

• 11:25Speaker 07

Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, seriously, man.

• 11:27Speaker 06

Do you do any method acting?

• 11:29Speaker 07

  Not, I don't, not with a capital M. I think, I think.

• 11:32Speaker 06

  The responder? So good.

• 11:35Speaker 07

  Thank you very much.

• 11:35Speaker 06

  So amazing.

• 11:36Speaker 07

No, I used to, I stay in the zone and I stay in the accent all the time. I mean, not when I go home, you know, but from pick up to rap in, in the course of a day. From the moment I get in the car to the time that we've wrapped for the day, I, I stay in that because just because it's easier. But I don't demand that everyone calls me Chris, you know, like, I don't think I'm an actual copper.

• 11:55Speaker 06

When you're in America, do you keep your American accent going all the time?

• 11:58Speaker 07

Always, for the same, for the same amount of time.

• 12:01Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Hannah's my sister who's an actress.

• 12:03Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 12:03Speaker 06

And she said she has to speak an American accent because she just starts to think in an American accent.

• 12:09Speaker 07

You do your whole rhythm, I mean, that's the thing. It is partly that thinking and talking to yourself in whichever accent you're doing, I think. It just, it just helps. It, it helps internalize it.

• 12:18Speaker 06

  Where was Fargo filmed?

• 12:20Speaker 07

It was filmed in Calgary in Canada, in Alberta.

• 12:23Speaker 06

  Right.

• 12:23Speaker 07

Yeah, so it was set kind of Minnesota, but it was filmed in Calgary, yeah.

• 12:27Jessie Ware?

It was funny because my friend, um, has just started on EastEnders and, um, she's playing Vicky Fowler. And she gave me a voice note. We were talking about our friend who's been, been a bit unwell and she was giving me a voice note and she sounded like Vicky Fowler and she was like, right babe. Yeah, so like, and I was like, babe, I think it's brilliant. She was, because she was all set, so it made sense.

• 12:48Speaker 07

Yeah, it does. You do feel, or I did, but anyway, I felt a bit, um.

• 12:54Speaker 07

Not pretentious, but I felt slightly twatish when I would, if I would have to be calling home to, you know, to my kids. I remember my kids were quite young when I was doing Fargo and um, or if I'm speaking to my agent or my misses or whatever. And you're doing it in the act, but it's just if you've got ten minutes off and you're in your trailer, you don't wanna then come out speaking like this when you then have to go back in ten minutes. Speaking like completely somebody else, making different shapes with your mouth and your tongue and your lips or it's. I I never ever want to watch something that I've done, full stop, no. I never wanna watch something that I've done and um, and think I should have done that better, do you know what I mean? I I'd always want to, you know, just wanna be specific.

• 13:31Jessie Ware?

Do you, do you watch your stuff?

• 13:32Speaker 07

Yeah, I will always watch everything once at least, yeah. And and sometimes I I like, I genuinely do like things I've been in, some of them. And uh, but I I've always watched something once, even if I don't like it, cause I find it instructive.

• 13:45Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 13:45Speaker 07

You know, I just think, okay, what didn't I like about that? What did I like about that?

• 13:49Speaker 06

What are you proud of, would you say?

• 13:51Speaker 07

  I think being here.

• 13:54Speaker 06

It is a big gig, actually.

• 13:58Speaker 07

I'm proud of a few things, I've been genuinely, honestly very fortunate in that I have done. Several things that are are up my street tastewise. The Office was up my street tastewise, I love Fargo, I liked Sherlock, I liked The Responder, I like Black Panther and I like, you know. I, yeah, I mean, I like the whole, there's lots of things I think, yeah, I'd watch that, I'd watch that.

• 14:19Speaker 06

Is there something you'd really love to do or a part you'd really love to play that you haven't quite done yet?

• 14:24Jessie Ware?

Or one that's been on telly that you were like, fuck, I should have done that.

• 14:28Speaker 07

I think there are lots of things I, there are lots of things that I see over the last twenty five, thirty years, I think, oh god. I like, here's the thing, I like being jealous of people in a good way. Cause you know, I I don't think any of us are gonna pretend we're not faulty human beings who have all the vices, jealousy is one of them. It's like, well, of course you're jealous sometimes. I like it when you're jealous and you think, good for you, mate, that was fucking great.

• 14:53Jessie Ware?

We are here to talk about food and we want to talk about where it all, well, uh, can you paint the picture of your dinner table? Who was around it in your childhood and what were you eating a memorable dish?

• 15:07Speaker 07

Without trying to play um Oliver Twist, I wasn't, I had a slightly um.

• 15:12Jessie Ware?

Which is your favourite musical, isn't it?

• 15:14Speaker 07

Oliver is easily one of my favourite musicals.

• 15:15Jessie Ware?

I love that you put West Side Story on your desert island discs.

• 15:18Speaker 07

Yeah, it's, I think it's one of the greatest things that's happened in the twentieth century, I really do.

• 15:23Jessie Ware?

Oliver that or West Side Story, both?

• 15:25Speaker 07

West Side Story, just, just. Oliver is um, you know, that's Premier League, always top four.

• 15:35Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 15:35Speaker 07

But um, but West Side Story, I think is um, it's one of the greatest things that mankind's ever produced. I really do think that. I really do think it's like, it's that good, yeah. It's amazingly good.

• 15:47Jessie Ware?

Did you like the first one or the second one?

• 15:49Speaker 07

Well, by a country mile, you know the answer.

• 15:54Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 15:54Speaker 07

Yeah, and and God bless him, you know, I mean, I love Spielberg and and it was really good, but that's.

• 16:00Jessie Ware?

It's really watchable. It was very watchable, but.

• 16:02Speaker 07

Yeah, but it's just ingrained, it's just ingrained into my soul. That's the, I've got a big framed poster of Rita Moreno up in my kitchen.

• 16:08Jessie Ware?

  Oh, really?

• 16:09Speaker 07

Yeah, that's an old, an old poster of West Side Story. It's, it's the best, isn't it? It's just, it's like every single strand of it.

• 16:16Jessie Ware?

See Natalie Wood wouldn't be allowed to be.

• 16:19Speaker 07

  No, not a chance.

• 16:20Jessie Ware?

  Not a chance now.

• 16:21Speaker 07

No way. Well, nor would George Chakris, nor would George, because he was Greek, I think, yeah.

• 16:24Jessie Ware?

He was Greek and she was wasp, yeah.

• 16:27Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 16:28Jessie Ware?

Um, have you ever been able to do it? Did you ever do it?

• 16:30Speaker 07

No, I haven't, and no, I haven't. I, I, I used it as an audition to get into drama school.

• 16:35Jessie Ware?

  Did you?

• 16:36Speaker 07

Who were you? No, I sang the Jets.

• 16:37Jessie Ware?

  Boy, crazy boy.

• 16:39Speaker 07

  I sang the Jets, yeah.

• 16:40Jessie Ware?

Of course. Or when you're a jet, did you wish?

• 16:42Speaker 07

When, yeah, when you're a jet.

• 16:43Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 16:43Speaker 07

Um, and I, I sang that.

• 16:46Jessie Ware?

I can imagine you being really good at that.

• 16:49Speaker 07

I'm glad you can imagine that. Let's just keep it as your imagination.

• 16:52Jessie Ware?

I'm liking you, Martin, because you're like a serious, like, important actor, but you like musicals and I always trust somebody that likes musicals.

• 16:58Speaker 07

  I do.

• 16:59Jessie Ware?

  However.

• 17:00Speaker 07

No, no, I do, but I realise that there's, there's a caveat to that in a, in a little way, and I'm not trying to backtrack on that, because I think a brilliant musical is a brilliant thing. It's a wonderful thing. And I'm always a little bit, come on, when people go, oh, I hate musicals, like, do you? What, all of them?

• 17:13Jessie Ware?

  Exactly, yeah.

• 17:14Speaker 07

It's like there are, there are terrible musicals, there are terrible plays, you know, um, but. No, I I think it's, I you know, I like Bernstein, I like Sundine, you know, I mean, I I I like other people too, but. I think Sundine is, there there's a whole load, there's a strand of modern musicals.

• 17:30Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 17:30Speaker 07

Let's, I'm gonna just go out there.

• 17:31Jessie Ware?

  Let's go.

• 17:32Speaker 07

I'm gonna go out there, post-rent musicals.

• 17:34Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 17:34Speaker 07

The I classes, why did Sundine bother, kind of musicals, like, just lots of talking like this, we're going to have some dinner. Fuck off, man.

• 17:42Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 17:43Speaker 07

  Write a proper score.

• 17:45Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 17:45Speaker 07

  Write proper music.

• 17:46Jessie Ware?

  Absolutely with you.

• 17:47Speaker 07

Like, that kind of, something that you'd knock up in the sixth form common room in about twenty minutes.

• 17:51Jessie Ware?

  I'm actually.

• 17:52Speaker 07

  We're having dinner.

• 17:53Jessie Ware?

I'm gonna do that as I'll feed you, I'm gonna literally, that's gonna be our outro, having.

• 17:58Speaker 07

And I, and I look, and I just think, why did Sundine bother? Because apparently, you know, you don't need to write beautiful semi-classical music.

• 18:06Jessie Ware?

You know what, mum never got me into Sundine, because you have an issue with him. And I feel like you've.

• 18:12Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 18:12Jessie Ware?

I feel like you've denied me a whole.

• 18:14Speaker 06

I did see Into the Woods, and I did see, I haven't seen, I haven't seen Merrily We Roll Along.

• 18:20Speaker 07

That was the first, that was the first thing I ever did in youth theatre in Teddington.

• 18:24Speaker 06

  I wished I'd done that.

• 18:25Speaker 07

  When I was fifteen.

• 18:26Speaker 06

  Wow. I haven't seen it.

• 18:26Jessie Ware?

  That's quite epic.

• 18:28Speaker 07

It is quite epic, but it was nineteen eighty-seven, and it was a kind of failed Sundine musical, so it wasn't really a, it wasn't a successful one, and it was a much less known one.

• 18:37Speaker 06

  Who did you play?

• 18:37Speaker 07

Oh, no one, I was like one of the people, you know, one of the cast, one of the chorus, doing various bits, and I was fifteen, I had a kind of. Andy Warhol flick, just as me, you know, me, I had a big wedge haircut, I was tiny, I mean, you can imagine, because I wasn't the giant of a man I am now. Um, you know, so I was small, and there was not an ounce of anything on me when I was fifteen, and I was just like a rabbit in the headlights, I loved it, I loved it. And then we went to Berlin with that, we took it to Berlin for a youth festival, and it's at West Berlin, and then we had a day trip in East Berlin.

• 19:11Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 19:12Speaker 07

And then I, and then we went back to Berlin four years later with Blood Brothers.

• 19:17Speaker 06

  Oh, wow.

• 19:17Speaker 07

And in the interim, we went to the Soviet Union, as was then, nineteen eighty-nine, we went to Kiev.

• 19:23Jessie Ware?

  The National Youth Music Theatre?

• 19:24Speaker 07

No, it wasn't, it was youth action theatre in Teddington, that was my, that was my playground, and that was where. Teddington, right, yeah, Serbia and Teddington, yeah, around that way, yeah, yeah, yeah, I was born in Aldershot, but I kind of threw out my life, moved further into the suburbs, and um. Yeah, around, I was a suburbanite, you know, uh. Green bit of London.

• 19:44Speaker 06

  Teddington's quite nice though.

• 19:45Speaker 07

  It's nice, yeah.

• 19:46Jessie Ware?

Let's talk about that dinner table then.

• 19:48Speaker 07

  Hmm.

• 19:48Jessie Ware?

Who was around the dinner table?

• 19:49Speaker 07

Hmm. Well, when I was much younger. Yeah, my parents had split up when I was very young. I'm the youngest of five. So, and, and I'm. I'm quite the youngest. So I'm six years between me and the next one.

• 20:05Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 20:06Speaker 07

Um. So it was. It was, it was quite fractured. And again, this is where I come, not being Oliver Twist, so I'm not trying to paint a poor me picture at all, because I was very loved, thank God.

• 20:18Speaker 06

  What did your dad do?

• 20:19Speaker 07

He was, by inclination, a painter.

• 20:23Speaker 06

  An artist?

• 20:24Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 20:24Speaker 06

  Yeah, not a patron decorator.

• 20:26Speaker 07

He wasn't a patron decorator, no, but he was an artist. So he went to, he went to art school, I guess, in the early fifties. Um, and, and then he, the twin loves of his life were the sea, because he was also in the navy. National service, him and his twin brother, national service in the Royal Navy. And painting. And alcohol, which is why, which kind of wasn't very good for him. But, um. But yeah, I saw, I spent a long time really with my dad, because when my mum and dad split up, I was actually with my dad for a long time, and then I went with my mum. Um. So, yeah, it was kind of a bit fractured. There wasn't a, there was a dinner, there was a table. But I don't, I don't remember, there wasn't like a whole family around it. Not, not my first memories.

• 21:05Speaker 06

  Did your mum work?

• 21:07Speaker 07

Yeah, she worked as, as all sorts, as all sorts of things, yeah.

• 21:10Speaker 06

Did she meet him at art school? Were they both arty?

• 21:12Speaker 07

No, she was quite, she was quite arty, but she did, they didn't meet at art school. She met, I think she met him at a party in North London in probably nineteen fifty six.

• 21:22Speaker 06

Were they kind of art school, you know, how art schooly people dress, a bit beatniky?

• 21:26Speaker 07

No, I don't, no, I don't think they were beatnik, they weren't that cool.

• 21:29Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 21:30Speaker 07

Um. And I think maybe they were slightly, I mean, my dad, my dad was born in nineteen thirty, my mum was born in nineteen thirty three, so maybe they were a few years older than the beatniks then would have been, I think.

• 21:39Speaker 06

Okay. But they grew up in the, they were in the fifties.

• 21:43Speaker 07

Yeah, they were, yeah, they were, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um. And my dad, yeah, so my dad would have been out of the navy. They met.

• 21:51Jessie Ware?

But he had to do military service.

• 21:53Speaker 07

He did, yeah, and he loved it. He loved being in, he loved being in the navy. Him and his twin brother went round the world and, you know, had a good time.

• 21:59Jessie Ware?

So they're both en- enlisted together?

• 22:01Speaker 07

  I think so, yeah.

• 22:02Jessie Ware?

  How sweet.

• 22:03Speaker 07

Yeah, I've got, I've seen, I mean, again.

• 22:04Jessie Ware?

And they looked, did they look alike?

• 22:05Speaker 07

Oh, they were, they were mirror, they were what they call mirror twins, so the party was on the other side, yeah, yeah. Um, but they both died fairly young.

• 22:13Jessie Ware?

  Oh, shame. What of?

• 22:15Speaker 07

  Alcohol.

• 22:16Jessie Ware?

Oh, bloody hell. Maybe being in the navy.

• 22:19Speaker 07

Well, there was a tot of rum with everything. That was part of your rations. Um, yeah, I mean, like, like a lot of people at that time, I guess. Drink was totally a thing. It was just a thing. It is, it is. It is, and cheers. Cheers, I'm just gonna finish my another vat of wine.

• 22:37Jessie Ware?

  So, so not necessarily memorable.

• 22:39Speaker 07

It wasn't loads, it wasn't the Waltons around the table.

• 22:41Jessie Ware?

Even though there were lots of siblings.

• 22:43Speaker 07

  Lots of siblings.

• 22:43Jessie Ware?

  They were kind of everywhere.

• 22:44Speaker 07

Yes, and lots of, you know, genuinely, I would make this, there was lots of love, but it wasn't, we weren't all together.

• 22:52Jessie Ware?

What is a memorable dish or, yeah, a meal that you remember from your childhood, eating a lot of or liking?

• 22:57Speaker 07

I remember one thing that I knew how to ask for when I was probably about five. And this again, without being all over twist, walking back from the pub with my dad.

• 23:08Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 23:09Speaker 07

Cause I used to go to the pub with my dad a lot. Um. He said, I think he said something like, you know, what do you fancy for tea or something? And I remember, and I remember it coming out of my mouth going, this is a sentence I'm saying. I said, uh, beef burger, chips and peas, please. And I thought, this, that sounds good. And I must have had it before. I can't have just invented that in my head. And so I liked beef burger, chips and peas. I loved spaghetti bolognese and the next day, I love, I always love cold spaghetti next day, loved it. Still do, actually. Um, so those were early ones for me.

• 23:42Jessie Ware?

Was your mum a good cook?

• 23:44Speaker 07

She was okay. She was all right. I think she said that, you know, I think my dad was horrified because he met my, you know, then they were married. In the late fifties, women was definitely supposed to be able to cook. My mum was one of fourteen.

• 23:58Jessie Ware?

  Shit.

• 23:59Speaker 07

  So, um.

• 24:01Jessie Ware?

  Did you Catholic?

• 24:02Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 24:02Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 24:03Speaker 07

  So.

• 24:03Jessie Ware?

Just he tried to work that one out.

• 24:05Speaker 07

  So, so, um.

• 24:10Speaker 07

I think he just thought, and why wouldn't you? Well, I've married a woman. She'll cook. You know, and she could sort of cook, but not re- not really. I think, I think certain bits of knowledge got kind of skipped over various bits of that brood of kids. And I think my mum was just like, I think. But she was working as well. She was working, I think, and she wouldn't have called herself, you know, again, she was born in thirty three. She wouldn't have thought of herself in, as any, like she, she didn't self mythologise, so she wouldn't have said, well, I was a proto feminist. But I think she sort of was in, in her head in a way that she was like, why should I cook for you? I think she probably thought that, like genuinely thought, what the fuck, you've got two arms. I think there was part of her that was like that. So. He'd been in the, in the services. He'd been in the services, yeah.

• 24:54Speaker 07

So everyone makes your food for you. And he also, he was from up north originally. He had a very traditional working class background, I suppose, where understandably w- women cooked. And, and, you know, I have no judgement on that one way or the other. What should I expect her from now, Martin? I think, but she should be in the kitchen. No, I don't. Christina, that was a joke. We all know it's a joke. It's fine. I love Jim Carrey and I love women working. Next.

• 25:19Jessie Ware?

Um, are you a good cook?

• 25:21Speaker 07

I'm not bad. I, I describe it as I can keep everyone alive, you know. And Rachel, my girlfriend, she, you know, I think we both like cooking. She's pretty good. I'm quite, I. Well, she's French. She should be. She is French, yeah, she is French. Courant bleu? She's not a courant bleu. She's a massive cheese and wine whore. That's what she would say about herself. She says that about herself. But she does say that about herself. I'm a cheese and wine whore. That's not all she is, but, um, but no, she loves, she loves all that stuff. She loves it, yeah. I know. And we like cooking and we do, recently we have tried to be mindful of how much processed food, but. I was a vegetarian. I was a vegetarian. Well, no, it wasn't that. I know you're a vegetarian.

• 26:04Speaker 07

From fourteen to twenty twenty three, I was, no, I was vegetarian for a long time. Then I was pescatarian. Yeah. But basically I hadn't had meat since nineteen eighty six, right? Hadn't had any meat, chicken, nothing. Since nineteen eighty six and at the end of twenty twenty three, I, you know, things in my life had happened which I won't go into. But you you know, you lose enough people in your life and you go, yeah, I'm gonna have a little reevaluation of what I'm doing and what. And why I'm doing this, is this, do I really wanna do this or is just habit, you know. And I thought, I love, I really do love vegetarian food.

• 26:44Speaker 07

What occurred to me was, we talk a lot in our life, in our culture about balance and about getting back, I thought, well. I can't have had that much balance because I haven't eaten meat or chicken since nineteen eighty six, do you know what I mean? There must be something slightly lacking in that, I don't know. Basically, what it was is, I like replacement meat, like a Beyond Burger is amazing. Some of that stuff is genuinely lovely, but then when, you know, you read the ingredients and there's twenty eight ingredients, most of which you can't pronounce.

• 27:12Jessie Ware?

  It's very processed.

• 27:13Speaker 07

It's very, very processed, it really is, it really is and and even though I, I, in an ideal world, I wouldn't eat animals. But I'm, I've just decided I want to give myself as much um potential health as possible. So actually, I started eating meat again as a health thing, not, not because usually the other way around is, well, you give up meat for health. And I get that as well because you shouldn't be eating, you know, ten meat pies a day. But again, balance, you know, not eating red meat all the time, but having some chicken, just having more protein, basically.

• 27:45Jessie Ware?

So, so I just need to know what cheese is always in your fridge, if you're a cheese and wine.

• 27:49Speaker 07

Um, well, I'm not, Rachel is, Comte, she loves Comte.

• 27:54Jessie Ware?

My kid, my kid now knows to go to the cheese man at the farmer's market, my three year old, and he knows.

• 28:01Speaker 06

  Why, does he like it?

• 28:03Jessie Ware?

  He loves a Comte.

• 28:04Speaker 06

  It's smelly.

• 28:05Jessie Ware?

So Rachel's always got a Comte.

• 28:07Speaker 07

She's, I mean, she's got lots of things that I don't really know about, you know, like, you know.

• 28:13Speaker 07

Like, I don't know that much about wine, other than I know some little things that I like, you know. But I like, I like soft cheeses.

• 28:20Speaker 06

  Me too, I think.

• 28:21Speaker 07

  I like a blue cheese.

• 28:22Speaker 06

Do you like a smelly cheese?

• 28:23Speaker 07

I don't mind it, but I'd, I'd rather have a, well, d- does brie count as smelly cheese?

• 28:28Speaker 06

Slightly, if you leave it long enough.

• 28:29Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 28:30Speaker 06

  Sort of goes like, yeah.

• 28:33Speaker 07

Yeah, and it has a little crust on it.

• 28:34Speaker 06

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 28:35Speaker 07

Yeah, no, I do love that, and I like a sort of baked brie.

• 28:38Speaker 06

Oh, gorgeous, or a baked camembert. Oh, lovely.

• 28:41Speaker 07

  That's what I meant.

• 28:42Speaker 06

Yeah, you made, you made the.

• 28:43Speaker 07

Brie and camembert are kind of cousins, aren't they? I love a baked camembert, yeah.

• 28:47Speaker 06

And which wine would you have with that?

• 28:49Speaker 07

I like Cabernet Sauvignon. I like Cabernet Sauvignon.

• 28:51Jessie Ware?

A Cap Sau, a Cap Sau.

• 28:53Speaker 07

  I do, yeah.

• 28:54Jessie Ware?

  I do too.

• 28:55Speaker 07

I went to New Zealand a long time ago to film The Hobbit.

• 28:57Speaker 06

  Of course.

• 28:58Speaker 07

And in New Zealand, people really care about wine, right?

• 29:01Speaker 06

  I know.

• 29:01Speaker 07

Young people, like, normal people, like, twenty-five-year-olds are gonna tell you about wine. And I got onto Pinot Noir there, and I thi- and, and I thought, oh, yeah, I love Pinot Noir, I love Pinot Noir. And I, and actually, after a while, I thought, I don't know if I'd love it that much.

• 29:14Speaker 06

  Thin, isn't it?

• 29:14Jessie Ware?

Yeah. It was a bit, at that time, though, I reckon it was quite trending.

• 29:18Speaker 07

In twenty-eleven, sort of thing, yeah, yeah, yeah, maybe so.

• 29:20Jessie Ware?

Martin, I would like to know, if we were coming over for dinner.

• 29:23Speaker 07

  Mm.

• 29:23Jessie Ware?

What are you cooking for us?

• 29:25Speaker 07

  Oh, god.

• 29:26Jessie Ware?

And vegetarian meal, maybe, that's like, is that gonna be your?

• 29:29Speaker 07

No, it would, no, it would be, it, I think I would now cook you meat or chicken.

• 29:33Jessie Ware?

  With the vegetarians.

• 29:33Speaker 07

I know, no, I think I'm already considering a brata with them, um. I don't know, uh, I mean, I. You know, quite.

• 29:44Jessie Ware?

  Or are we ordering in?

• 29:45Speaker 07

  No, we're not ordering in.

• 29:46Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 29:46Speaker 07

Uh, for a period, we would have been ordering in.

• 29:48Jessie Ware?

  That's fine, as well.

• 29:49Speaker 07

If there's, if there's, if there's an, over a certain number.

• 29:52Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 29:52Speaker 07

  I think we're ordering in.

• 29:53Jessie Ware?

  Uh-huh.

• 29:53Speaker 07

Cause I have a fantastic Japanese canteen down the road that I just love, I just love it, can't get enough of it.

• 29:59Speaker 06

  Like Japanese?

• 30:00Speaker 07

  I do love Japanese.

• 30:00Jessie Ware?

Also, I don't feel well-versed enough to be able to cook a Japanese meal well enough.

• 30:05Speaker 07

  No.

• 30:06Jessie Ware?

  Better than.

• 30:06Speaker 07

  No, I know.

• 30:07Jessie Ware?

  So is it?

• 30:07Speaker 07

I almost don't, I almost don't want to learn that well enough, you know what I mean, like, there are some that, I believe in specialities.

• 30:14Jessie Ware?

  Uh-huh.

• 30:14Speaker 07

And I believe in people's specialisms.

• 30:16Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 30:17Speaker 07

And I think, well, in the same way that I'm not gonna get in your territory and make your album.

• 30:21Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 30:22Speaker 07

I'm not gonna start trying to do sashimi in the same way, like, that's what that restaurant's for, you know.

• 30:29Speaker 06

So, do you go out for sushi?

• 30:31Speaker 07

We order that one in a lot, we occasionally go there, cause it's a very. Um, not judgy, very unpretentious, uh, canteen. There's a place up the road in Hampstead Village. Yeah. Called Ine, which is posh Japanese. Oh, wow. Where you, where you have a, a sake sommelier. And it's like a. Wow. Yeah, I mean, I'm not, I don't work for them. Yeah. I'm not on Insta for them. Okay. Uh, yeah, this place, Ine, I N E. I think we should go down there. It's really beautiful. I think we met years ago.

• 31:00Jessie Ware?

I know where we met, actually.

• 31:02Speaker 07

Okay, let's say it one word at a time. Let's say it one word at a time. Tom, you go first.

• 31:06Jessie Ware?

  Harold.

• 31:10Speaker 07

  Carry on. Fill her in.

• 31:11Jessie Ware?

The, the, the season, uh, uh, I was next to.

• 31:14Speaker 07

That's not one word at a time. Okay. Simply.

• 31:18Jessie Ware?

  Daniel.

• 31:18Speaker 07

  Kaluya. Okay, yeah.

• 31:20Jessie Ware?

  Um.

• 31:20Speaker 07

  We had.

• 31:20Jessie Ware?

And Jo, was Joe Dempsey with us too? I don't know.

• 31:24Speaker 07

  Uh.

• 31:25Jessie Ware?

Maybe, but Daniel, you and Daniel.

• 31:26Speaker 07

  I know, I, yes.

• 31:27Jessie Ware?

  You know, Daniel, I think.

• 31:28Speaker 07

Yes, I know Daniel a bit and, uh, and we were talking and then you arrived and we were introduced briefly and then, yeah.

• 31:35Jessie Ware?

You've got such a good memory, because I was not, I was, I was gonna bring it up.

• 31:38Speaker 07

No, you don't give a shit.

• 31:39Jessie Ware?

  Well, I don't give a shit.

• 31:40Speaker 07

  No.

• 31:40Jessie Ware?

  About what?

• 31:41Speaker 07

  About meeting me.

• 31:42Jessie Ware?

What are you fucking talking about?

• 31:44Speaker 07

She doesn't care. Jesse, you never even mentioned it. No, exactly.

• 31:48Jessie Ware?

  God.

• 31:48Speaker 07

Because A, she doesn't care, B, she forgot. Yeah. C, because I'm not Joe Dempsey. Yeah. It's like, it's not, it's just not as important.

• 31:55Jessie Ware?

Excuse me, Martin, I was being professional and a bit fucking.

• 31:59Speaker 07

No, no, you were, Jesse, you were about to mention Danny Dyer.

• 32:03Jessie Ware?

  I tell you why.

• 32:04Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah.

• 32:04Jessie Ware?

Because Martin was there, because we were seeing a play.

• 32:07Speaker 07

  Yeah, but.

• 32:07Jessie Ware?

  Do you remember?

• 32:08Speaker 07

It was a double bill, wasn't it?

• 32:09Jessie Ware?

It was the lovers, which I really liked.

• 32:11Speaker 07

  We, uh, yeah.

• 32:12Jessie Ware?

  And it was the homecoming.

• 32:14Speaker 07

  Was it the homecoming?

• 32:15Jessie Ware?

I think it was the homecoming. Russell Tovey was in it.

• 32:17Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 32:17Jessie Ware?

  Because we went for Hayley.

• 32:18Speaker 07

And, um, Susha, Baby Susha. Oh, damn. Susha, yeah, he was in, yeah, yeah.

• 32:24Jessie Ware?

Um, but you were, so you were part of the same season.

• 32:27Speaker 07

  Correct.

• 32:27Jessie Ware?

And we recently had Danny Dyer on.

• 32:29Speaker 07

  Yeah, he's lovely, isn't he?

• 32:31Jessie Ware?

And were you in the same show as him?

• 32:32Speaker 07

Yeah, we would, we did The Dum Waiter, which is a two-hander, which was, um, yeah, it was very, uh, it was very fun. I, I really liked Danny.

• 32:40Jessie Ware?

How did it feel being with Pinter's Muse?

• 32:44Speaker 07

Well, interestingly enough, um, when we were both younger actors, I was up for a couple of things that Harold did. And I remember getting a recall and hearing that it was between me and Danny for it. At the, this was like nineteen ninety eight or nine, something like that. Um, and, and he got it and I remember not minding because I'd actually seen it in that way that.

• 33:08Speaker 07

When you really like an actor, you go, God go with you. Fantastic. Good for you. And I had seen him in a play at the Almeida in early ninety nine. Called Certain Young Men by Peter Gill, where he was playing a, a rent boy. And he was just, he was fantastic. He had a real, um, charisma. He was natural. It's like he wasn't acting. Uh, and so I've always been a big fan of Danny. Yeah.

• 33:32Speaker 06

What made you get into theatre? Your mum and dad didn't act.

• 33:36Speaker 07

  It was the tight trousers.

• 33:37Speaker 06

  The tight trousers.

• 33:39Speaker 07

It was the lederhosen. No, it was, um, I, I thought I was going to be a squash player from about the age of nine.

• 33:45Speaker 06

Can you play squash? Yeah, I mean, I was a very, I genuinely.

• 33:46Speaker 06

You thought it was gonna be a player mum?

• 33:48Speaker 07

I genuinely was a very good squash player.

• 33:49Speaker 06

  You were very good.

• 33:50Speaker 07

I was in the Surrey squad, I was in the national squad, you know, my, my age group. And I was a really good squash player.

• 33:55Speaker 06

Who got, who got you into that?

• 33:57Speaker 07

My mum and stepdad worked at a place in Waybridge in Surrey.

• 34:00Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 34:01Speaker 07

They worked at a place called, uh, St George's Hill.

• 34:04Speaker 06

Oh, I know that. Yeah. How do you know that? Cause, cause I used to work in Waybridge. Oh, right.

• 34:09Speaker 07

  Did you? Okay. So between.

• 34:11Speaker 06

  At an approved school.

• 34:12Speaker 07

Did you? Okay. So between seventy nine and eighty three, I lived there, cause we lived on site, you know, we were the help, basically.

• 34:18Speaker 06

  Oh, near Cliff Richards.

• 34:20Speaker 07

  Correct. Tom Jones.

• 34:22Speaker 06

They all live there on that, this.

• 34:23Speaker 07

  Dick Emery.

• 34:24Speaker 06

On this, this particular. Were you like a ball boy for them?

• 34:27Speaker 07

Don't do that. Don't say ball boy and do that.

• 34:34Speaker 07

Don't say, were you a ball boy? That's just that.

• 34:37Speaker 06

Do you know it? It's not that kind of.

• 34:39Speaker 07

It's not that kind of podcast.

• 34:40Speaker 06

Just see, it's going into that.

• 34:42Speaker 07

I, no, I wasn't a ball boy. I, we lived, we lived there, me and my brother Jamie lived there with my mum and stepdad. While they, my mum ran the kitchen, my stepdad ran the, the bar and we lived upstairs. We lived on site.

• 34:55Speaker 07

And and that's where I found out I was good at um hand eye coordination, I'm good at tennis.

• 35:00Jessie Ware?

So did they have a squash court?

• 35:02Speaker 07

They did, they had like four squash courts and I sort of tentatively went down and played and I and I was I was quite good. Immediately I was sort of quite good and then I got better and so anyway, I I loved it, loved it, loved it until I did, sorry, I'm gonna stop hitting this table. I loved it until I slightly fell out of love with it because competition came in and and I was going up and down the country for various competitions. And you know, sometimes when you are, when you do something just for pleasure and it's completely untutored. It's really good fun and then the deeper you get into it. Um then it becomes a bit of a schlep, a tiny bit of a schlep, you know.

• 35:40Speaker 07

And then I sort of didn't love it anymore, I I just I just thought I don't really wanna do this. So then I thought, what do I wanna do? I I thought at fourteen, you should know what you wanted to do with your life. Because from the age of nine, I I thought I'm gonna be a squash player. And then when I didn't anymore. I thought, well, I better hurry up and find something and and and I had done a play at school, I'd done a musical at school and I. Thought I was okay in that, I certainly enjoyed it and um. And we're from a family of kind of show-offs, you know, there's musicians and there's there's it's a performance element in my family without question, you know. Um. So I joined a youth theatre, I joined a youth theatre up the road from me in Teddington.

• 36:17Jessie Ware?

I find it really interesting, if you had musicians in your family and it seems like you turned your hand to things, anything. You you could have been a sports person.

• 36:27Speaker 07

  Right.

• 36:27Jessie Ware?

Or and you're one of our greatest actors.

• 36:30Speaker 07

Not my words, the words of Jessie Ware. Yeah.

• 36:33Jessie Ware?

But okay, and you have this love for music.

• 36:37Speaker 07

  I do, yeah.

• 36:38Jessie Ware?

  And.

• 36:39Speaker 07

That that's the first of everything, I mean, that's I love that more than anything.

• 36:43Jessie Ware?

  Too sacred to even touch.

• 36:45Speaker 07

Kind of, I I think I have too much respect for it in that um. Like, I know I know good mu- I I know I know what it is. It's like being a eunuch in a harem, right? I know what it is, I just can't do it, right? Or I can't do it as well as I would want to do.

• 37:00Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 37:01Speaker 07

I was in a band with one of my brothers for a while, I was doing backing vocals and percussion and stuff, you know, and I really enjoyed it, but. And I do definitely have a musical brain.

• 37:09Jessie Ware?

  Mm.

• 37:09Speaker 07

Or a musical heart or whatever, or a musical instinct. If she keeps on making that kind of noise, I am gonna go absolutely. Apoplectic with rage. I'm joking, Lenny, I'm joking.

• 37:24Speaker 07

  Genuinely louder than your gigs.

• 37:28Speaker 07

Yeah, no, it's good. It's all good stuff. But no, I think when I, I sort of learned to play, when I was about nineteen,

• 37:37Speaker 07

I learned to play a bit of guitar. And then I thought, well, I'm not gonna be amazing at that. I was like, what's the, what's the point of putting more mediocrity out into the world? I was already at youth theatre by that time. But no, I'm gonna be, you know, I'm gonna be an actor. That, that's what I think, without sounding two percents, I think that's what I'm supposed to be doing.

• 37:54Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 37:55Speaker 07

And I think what I'm supposed to do with music is loving it. That's what I'm supposed to be, you know, and really cherishing it.

• 41:11Jessie Ware?

So, we're gonna start eating, and this may offend-

• 41:13Speaker 07

By the way, I'm a slow eater. I chew. Well, I just chew. I like chewing. I don't like hoovering anymore.

• 41:18Jessie Ware?

  Okay, you like to masticate.

• 41:19Speaker 07

Yes, I do like to masticate, yes.

• 41:21Jessie Ware?

Okay, do you want some red wine?

• 41:22Speaker 07

  I'd love some.

• 41:23Jessie Ware?

Which one did you bring? Did you bring this one? Let's open your one.

• 41:25Speaker 07

  I didn't.

• 41:26Jessie Ware?

  Let's open your one.

• 41:27Speaker 07

Yeah. I think it's quite nice. I think I've had it, yeah. What's that? What's that salad-y thing?

• 41:32Speaker 06

  Oh, it's a Turkish thing.

• 41:34Speaker 07

  Is it?

• 41:34Speaker 06

  It's courgette and carrot-

• 41:36Speaker 07

  Oh, lovely.

• 41:37Speaker 06

-and yogurt. And I forgot what else is in it. But it looked quite nice. But actually, I think I should've got it out of the fridge earlier because it's a bit cold.

• 41:46Speaker 07

Looks really good, it looks, and those potatoes look fantastic.

• 41:49Speaker 06

Well, they're stuck forever and it was, this girl that's staying with me, it was actually a two-person job.

• 41:55Speaker 07

  Was it?

• 41:55Speaker 06

  Because they didn't stand up.

• 41:57Speaker 07

The standing up bit is quite impressive, yeah.

• 41:59Speaker 06

  Yeah, unless somebody, oh yeah.

• 42:01Speaker 07

It's kind of like a, a vertical dolphin wasp.

• 42:03Speaker 06

  Will you help yourself, sorry.

• 42:05Jessie Ware?

  Mum, it looks delicious.

• 42:06Speaker 07

I will, I will help myself, I'm just gonna do that.

• 42:07Jessie Ware?

It looks really, really delicious, Mum.

• 42:09Speaker 07

It does look good, thank you very much.

• 42:10Jessie Ware?

  So, um, the fifth step.

• 42:12Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 42:13Jessie Ware?

  Jack Lowden.

• 42:14Speaker 07

  Lovely Jack Lowden.

• 42:15Jessie Ware?

Um, have you spent much time with him?

• 42:17Speaker 07

I have not, no, I've, I've met, I've met him once in the flesh.

• 42:21Jessie Ware?

So, so did you have to read opposite each other, or, no, that's not what happened?

• 42:24Speaker 07

It was a play he had done, uh, last year at the Edinburgh Festival. And, um, so he's already done it once, I think it's great. And, uh, and it was sent to me just before Christmas.

• 42:34Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 42:35Speaker 07

And, um, I read it and immedi- immediately thought, oh, this is dangerous because I want to do it, you know. So it's all very well reading a play that you think, I like it, it's really good, I like everything involved, but I, I can pass on it because it's too long or whatever. But, um, it was too, it was too good to not do. It was just a really, and I, and I, and I didn't know Jack, but I do like Jack's work, I think what he does is very good and, um, thank you.

• 42:58Speaker 06

  Do you like Slow Horses?

• 42:59Speaker 07

I do like Slow Horses, but also, you know, he's, he's done various things over the years, I just, thank you. I think sometimes you can tell, well, I, I hope you can tell, I think I'm right. You can tell what someone is going to be like as a human.

• 43:13Jessie Ware?

  Hmm.

• 43:14Speaker 07

Uh, I think you can tell a lot by the way they, by the way they are, you know, and, um, and I.

• 43:19Jessie Ware?

And who they marry, because, you know, Saoirse Ronan's a catch.

• 43:23Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 43:23Jessie Ware?

  And a very good actress.

• 43:24Speaker 07

  She's been on this, eh?

• 43:25Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 43:26Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 43:26Jessie Ware?

  She was amazing.

• 43:27Speaker 07

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, now, now she was good, now she really was good, yeah. Now she was amazing, um, you know, he just, he, he seems li- like.

• 43:40Speaker 07

The way I hoped he would be, which is a very normal, un-show busy, unpretentious person, you know. And um.

• 43:46Jessie Ware?

So tell the people that are listening.

• 43:48Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 43:49Jessie Ware?

It's at Soho Place, which is a new theatre.

• 43:52Speaker 07

It is a new theatre, yeah, it's uh, it's, it's right next to Tottenham Court Road Tube in London and um. And it's, yeah, it's an exciting new venue for the young people of today.

• 44:03Jessie Ware?

And it, it's, is it just you two in the?

• 44:05Speaker 07

It's just us two, it's, it's no, no interval, straight through, thank you.

• 44:09Jessie Ware?

  I love a straight through.

• 44:09Speaker 07

Me too, yeah, so do I, so do I, as a doer and as a viewer, I love a straight through.

• 44:14Jessie Ware?

It's um. It's not because I'm lazy, because I, well, maybe I am, I love theatre, I absolutely love theatre, but I do appreciate.

• 44:22Speaker 07

But you don't need it to last five hours.

• 44:24Jessie Ware?

I don't, apart from the Lehman trilogy, I didn't mind that lasting for a very long time.

• 44:28Speaker 07

Oi, look at that, bloody hell. Jeez Louise, fantastic.

• 44:33Jessie Ware?

  Oh, that rhymes delish.

• 44:34Speaker 07

I'm really gonna take my time with this, Tony, I hope that's okay.

• 44:37Jessie Ware?

  You're absolutely fine, darling.

• 44:38Speaker 07

But it'll be um, it'll be very appreciated, I know that, thank you darling.

• 44:42Jessie Ware?

Um, so, so the premise of the play.

• 44:45Speaker 07

The premise of the play is uh, Jack and I meet at Alcoholics Anonymous.

• 44:48Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 44:49Speaker 07

Uh, I end up being his sponsor, he, you know, he's, he's, I'm a generation above him, I've known the game a little bit more. Um, we talk, get to know each other, and we kind of run the gamma of, um.

• 45:03Jessie Ware?

  Do you like each other?

• 45:05Speaker 07

We do, I think my character. Hmm.

• 45:08Jessie Ware?

  Help yourself tomorrow.

• 45:09Speaker 07

What, what, what, thank you, what unfolds is that, there's a slight, I don't know, between human beings, I guess, there's a slight status thing going on that, like, whether you're a sponsor or a mentor or whatever, I think it's. I've always been interested in that thing of, you know, if you, you know, there's a young singer who you see, and you really wanna help her.

• 45:29Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 45:29Speaker 07

You really wanna, because she's amazing, and you love her, you love her, you wanna help her, you help her until she's more successful than you, you know. And then it's like, oh Christ, I didn't make, no, this, you were meant to be my pad one, you know, whatever, you know, um. So I think there's a little bit of that in it, you know, I s- I see a a young, a younger man who needs help. I wanna give him help, but then um I also probably want to control him a little bit as well, you know.

• 45:56Jessie Ware?

  Um.

• 45:57Speaker 06

  The fifth step.

• 45:58Speaker 07

The fifth step, it's, yeah, yeah. And of the twelve steps in A A.

• 46:04Jessie Ware?

  What is the fifth?

• 46:05Speaker 07

Um. The fifth step, no, the fourth step is when you have to write out. Every bad thing that you've done in your, everything you've been feel bad for.

• 46:15Speaker 07

What they call resentments and fears and harms done to others, everything that you're.

• 46:19Speaker 06

  Apologize.

• 46:20Speaker 07

And then you have to give it to your, let's say your sponsor, and you have to just lay it out there. Like a confession on steroids, sort of thing, you know, it's um, people have described it to me. And. I guess, if, you know, if you want, if, how it's been described to me by some, a friend of mine is, if you wanted to do it properly, you don't, you don't need anything out. So. That to me is pretty terrifying.

• 46:43Speaker 06

  Mm hmm.

• 46:45Speaker 07

Um. The idea of ev- everything that has made you feel, um, well, I think when you know you've done something wrong in your life, you know. And god knows, if you live long enough in your life, then you would have done a few things that you think, that wasn't great, that wasn't great. And telling someone who is not your mum. I don't know, maybe it's easier if you, I don't know, I don't know, but um.

• 47:07Speaker 06

Do you need salt and pepper, anyone?

• 47:08Jessie Ware?

  I don't, um, no, I think it's delicious.

• 47:11Speaker 07

  Thank you.

• 47:13Jessie Ware?

  Like how?

• 47:14Speaker 07

  I love that salad.

• 47:15Jessie Ware?

  I know, it's good, isn't it? Mum, that's a really good salad.

• 47:18Speaker 07

  It's Turkish.

• 47:19Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 47:19Speaker 07

  Mm.

• 47:20Speaker 06

It's in a cookbook that I thought, oh, great, it's vegetarian Turkish cookbook.

• 47:25Jessie Ware?

  Mm.

• 47:26Speaker 06

And a born again vegetarian mini.

• 47:28Speaker 07

  Very good.

• 47:29Jessie Ware?

  Delicious.

• 47:30Speaker 07

  Mm.

• 47:30Jessie Ware?

The jus on that is like unreal.

• 47:33Speaker 06

I can't taste oregano in that.

• 47:36Jessie Ware?

  It's, it's delicious, though.

• 47:38Speaker 07

  Mm.

• 47:38Jessie Ware?

  I'm really enjoying this, mum.

• 47:41Speaker 07

  Me too.

• 47:41Jessie Ware?

  It's really lovely.

• 47:43Speaker 07

  Thank you.

• 47:44Speaker 06

  Good morning.

• 47:44Jessie Ware?

  Mm, okay, last supper.

• 47:46Speaker 07

  Mm.

• 47:47Jessie Ware?

Starter, main, pud, drink of choice.

• 47:50Speaker 06

  He doesn't eat puds, Joe.

• 47:52Speaker 07

  I do.

• 47:52Jessie Ware?

  What is this?

• 47:53Speaker 07

Lent. I give it up a Lent.

• 47:57Jessie Ware?

Oh, you're gonna really regret it tonight.

• 47:58Speaker 07

  Oh, don't say that.

• 47:59Jessie Ware?

You are. So you do Lent every year?

• 48:03Speaker 07

Hmm, I do. It's like the last vestige of my Catholicism.

• 48:06Jessie Ware?

We just thought you were a diva.

• 48:07Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 48:07Jessie Ware?

Or like you were trying to get, you were getting naked in the show.

• 48:11Speaker 06

  The Maui bod.

• 48:13Jessie Ware?

Like, oh wow, he's a bit, he's in competition with Jack Lowden, so oh god, he needs to get a bit naked on stage.

• 48:18Speaker 07

No, it's just, I always give, I always give, there's a set load of things that I always say I'm not.

• 48:24Jessie Ware?

  But wine is fine.

• 48:26Speaker 07

Yeah, ma'am, because I haven't said I'm giving it up.

• 48:28Jessie Ware?

So wine is fine, but like, so chocolate, so sweet stuff?

• 48:32Speaker 07

Crisps, biscuits, chocolate, cake, pudding, dessert, sweets. Quite specific though.

• 48:38Jessie Ware?

Mum, we can't, we can't fuck with that. So, yeah, fair enough.

• 48:41Speaker 06

  But we will love it.

• 48:42Speaker 07

  Of course.

• 48:43Speaker 06

I'm just going to tell you what it is.

• 48:44Speaker 07

  Yeah, please do.

• 48:45Speaker 06

So it's a Spanish lemon and almond cake.

• 48:48Speaker 07

  Fuck off.

• 48:48Speaker 06

Yeah. With a mascarpone, um, honey.

• 48:53Speaker 07

  Oh, man.

• 48:54Jessie Ware?

Um, can you not just, because you're with Jews tonight?

• 48:57Speaker 06

Yeah, it's a different thing. God will let you.

• 49:00Speaker 07

  I know.

• 49:01Speaker 06

God will give you a bit of a pass, Jessica. It's a dry house.

• 49:07Speaker 06

This is very nice Primitivo, darling.

• 49:10Jessie Ware?

  I love Primitivo.

• 49:11Speaker 06

I think it's one of the best.

• 49:13Speaker 07

You know what? I forgot to drink wine.

• 49:15Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 49:15Jessie Ware?

  Drink up, mate!

• 49:17Speaker 07

  God almighty.

• 49:17Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 49:21Jessie Ware?

Are you happy with it? Yes, delish.

• 49:23Speaker 06

  It's really good.

• 49:24Jessie Ware?

So, so, um. Okay, so last supper.

• 49:27Speaker 07

  Oh, my god. Hmm, yeah.

• 49:28Jessie Ware?

Starter, what are we starting with?

• 49:30Speaker 07

Okay, my starter is tuna tartare.

• 49:35Speaker 06

  Oh, I love that.

• 49:37Speaker 07

  Because it's light.

• 49:38Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 49:38Speaker 07

  Tasty.

• 49:39Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 49:41Speaker 07

It does what it's supposed to do, um, wake your mouth up.

• 49:44Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 49:44Speaker 07

And tantalises you, but it's not too filling. It's still light.

• 49:49Speaker 06

Where have you had your best tuna tartare?

• 49:51Speaker 07

Hmm, I, the Wolsey does a good one.

• 49:54Speaker 06

  Oh.

• 49:55Speaker 07

Yeah, the Wolsey does do a very good one.

• 49:57Speaker 06

Yeah. Do you like the Wolsey?

• 49:58Speaker 07

  I do, I love it.

• 49:59Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 49:59Speaker 07

  It's not snobby.

• 50:00Speaker 06

Do you have a cocktail with your tuna tartare?

• 50:03Speaker 07

  Negroni, ma'am.

• 50:04Jessie Ware?

  Hmm.

• 50:04Speaker 07

  I just love a Negroni.

• 50:05Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, love it.

• 50:07Speaker 07

I love a Negroni, yeah. Um, it's like pudding at first.

• 50:10Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 50:11Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 50:11Jessie Ware?

Pudding. So a Negroni with a tuna tartare. Nice. Main.

• 50:18Speaker 07

Hmm. I really love fish and chips. I love a posh fish and chips.

• 50:23Speaker 06

  Where do you get yours?

• 50:25Speaker 07

  Anywhere, okay. I don't care.

• 50:27Speaker 06

Big batter, do you like the batter?

• 50:29Speaker 07

Don't talk to me like that.

• 50:31Speaker 06

Do you take the batter off?

• 50:32Speaker 07

  Of course.

• 50:33Jessie Ware?

  What?

• 50:34Speaker 06

  Some people do.

• 50:35Jessie Ware?

Why would you get fish and chips then?

• 50:36Speaker 06

Because they pretend that they can't eat the batter.

• 50:40Speaker 07

No, I know, I have seen people.

• 50:41Jessie Ware?

Who are you talking about? This conspiracy theory you're starting?

• 50:45Speaker 06

Yeah, you've not, I've seen people, just either take the batter off.

• 50:48Jessie Ware?

Why would they order fish and chips?

• 50:50Speaker 06

Because they try and be part of the gang and then don't eat the batter.

• 50:54Jessie Ware?

What gang, the fucking, the heart, heart disease gang?

• 50:58Speaker 06

And then, seashells good. Do you live in, yeah, Liston Grove, yeah.

• 51:03Speaker 07

  Liston Grove, yeah. Very nice.

• 51:05Speaker 06

We've got a good one in Dulwich, opposite Rockwell Park.

• 51:09Jessie Ware?

I usually finish my kids' fish and chips because I don't think I could do a whole fish and chips.

• 51:14Speaker 07

  I know what you mean.

• 51:15Speaker 06

Especially when it comes out like that.

• 51:16Jessie Ware?

And that isn't not me judging you, because I can eat. But I don't know if I'd be able to do it.

• 51:20Speaker 07

No, I am what is known in my family as a fat pig and I love eating.

• 51:25Jessie Ware?

  Do you?

• 51:25Speaker 07

  Yeah, mum, I love eating.

• 51:27Speaker 06

Friday night, though, must have been fish and chips night when you were little, yeah.

• 51:31Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 51:31Speaker 06

  Haven't it?

• 51:32Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 51:32Jessie Ware?

So, okay, so fish and chips, any sides and condiments?

• 51:36Speaker 06

No, I want to know which fish it is.

• 51:37Jessie Ware?

  Oh, sorry, like.

• 51:38Speaker 06

  Haddock, cod, cod, cod.

• 51:40Speaker 07

  I do like haddock.

• 51:41Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 51:41Speaker 07

  I also like place.

• 51:42Speaker 06

Me too, but there's nothing like cod, really.

• 51:45Speaker 07

  Cod is great.

• 51:45Speaker 06

  Yeah. Vinegar, vinegar?

• 51:48Speaker 07

If you ever interrupt me again.

• 51:49Speaker 06

Sorry, this is terrible. Take over from Alice.

• 51:54Speaker 07

  I'm never fucking mad.

• 51:55Speaker 06

  Yeah, tell me.

• 51:55Speaker 07

I didn't realise, I'm storing up a lot of anger.

• 51:58Speaker 06

  I know, oh god.

• 51:59Speaker 07

And it seems to be really projected over here.

• 52:01Speaker 06

  I'm fine, darling.

• 52:02Speaker 07

Just keep, don't wake the beast. Um, vinegar, salt and vinegar, of course, love it. Plenty of salt and vinegar.

• 52:08Speaker 06

  Can I ask a question?

• 52:09Speaker 07

  If you fucking have to.

• 52:11Speaker 06

  Ketchup.

• 52:12Speaker 07

Yeah, yeah, I, I, I do do the ketchup and mayonnaise and mix it up.

• 52:15Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 52:15Jessie Ware?

You're the only person that's silenced. Well, I mean, she's not, she's not silenced, but she's definitely quieter.

• 52:22Speaker 06

  Yeah, I'm quieter.

• 52:23Speaker 07

Mashy peas? No, you're not having it?

• 52:29Speaker 07

Where? You said, you're doing that like it's you've never heard of this, come on.

• 52:33Speaker 06

I have, I come from Manchester.

• 52:36Jessie Ware?

I've never seen you have. You try, that's the gang you try and be in. I've never seen you with a curry sauce chip.

• 52:44Speaker 06

Because we're not in Manchester, darling, they don't sell it here.

• 52:47Speaker 07

  They do.

• 52:48Speaker 06

Where? Does Liston Grove Seashells sell curry sauce? No, definitely not.

• 52:56Speaker 06

Did you film the first responder in Liverpool?

• 52:59Speaker 07

  Yeah, both of them, yeah.

• 52:59Speaker 06

So did you get curry sauce all the time?

• 53:03Speaker 07

No, yeah, I love curry sauce, I love it. But it's down here, it might not be as good as the North West.

• 53:08Speaker 06

  It's not everywhere.

• 53:09Speaker 07

But I don't, do I wanna choose that? Or do I wanna just choose a massive platter of beautiful Japanese food, I think, you know, maybe not. Speaking to Mark Gaitis about this, and he said, and I kind of agree, is there really? Really, anything just nicer than beans on toast? Maybe not, maybe not. Immediately satisfying, with butter.

• 53:32Speaker 06

Do you like cheese on top?

• 53:34Jessie Ware?

She's scared to ask a question.

• 53:37Speaker 06

  Terrified.

• 53:38Speaker 07

  Babe, I was acting.

• 53:41Jessie Ware?

He's back in the room, he's back in the room.

• 53:43Speaker 07

I would only do that with someone I felt comfortable with.

• 53:44Speaker 06

  And Martin, I don't care.

• 53:46Jessie Ware?

She's gonna keep on trying, don't worry.

• 53:49Speaker 06

  You won't keep me down.

• 53:50Speaker 07

She doesn't care, she doesn't remember me. It's so hard being me.

• 53:54Jessie Ware?

  Harold fucking Pinter, Martin.

• 53:57Speaker 07

  Daniel fucking Kaluuya.

• 53:58Jessie Ware?

Fucking hell. Um, okay, so we've got tuna tart.

• 54:03Speaker 07

  We.

• 54:04Jessie Ware?

  Japanese omakase.

• 54:06Speaker 07

  Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 54:07Jessie Ware?

  And fish and chips.

• 54:07Speaker 07

  And fish and chips.

• 54:08Jessie Ware?

  And beans on toast, yeah.

• 54:10Speaker 07

Oh my god, I mean, this is a.

• 54:10Jessie Ware?

  No, it's great.

• 54:11Speaker 07

The reason this is the last supper is because it will kill me.

• 54:13Jessie Ware?

Yeah, and then, are we gonna have a little, are you gonna have any wines in the, in the main?

• 54:19Speaker 07

I mean, well, yeah, I'd have a cabinet over in you.

• 54:21Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 54:22Jessie Ware?

This primitives is giving me a lot.

• 54:25Speaker 07

  This is really good.

• 54:26Speaker 06

I don't know where you've got this from, but I like it, it's organic, Jesse, there you go. You can rub your rose quartz on that.

• 54:32Jessie Ware?

  Oh, shut up.

• 54:33Speaker 07

  Can't say that anymore.

• 54:35Jessie Ware?

So pudding, it's obviously, uh, have you got a sweet tooth?

• 54:39Speaker 07

  I do, I love.

• 54:40Jessie Ware?

And that's why you've given it up for Lent?

• 54:41Speaker 07

Yeah, I try and give things up that I actually will find slightly difficult.

• 54:46Jessie Ware?

So what is, is it still the lemon meringue pie?

• 54:49Speaker 07

I do love lemon meringue pie, but because it's you, I'm gonna choose something else.

• 54:52Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 54:53Speaker 07

I love, I like a really thick chocolate cake. I just do, with cream, I just love it, man.

• 54:59Speaker 06

  But like, are we.

• 55:01Speaker 07

  Why are you disagreeing?

• 55:02Speaker 06

No, I'm just wonder, I just need to know whether like it's a.

• 55:09Speaker 07

They were ve- they're very nice, actually.

• 55:11Jessie Ware?

What would be a nostalgic taste or scent that could transport you back somewhere, happy or sad?

• 55:18Speaker 07

Taste or scent? I don't know the answer to this, but something is drawing me to Christmas.

• 55:23Speaker 06

  Mm hmm, oh.

• 55:25Speaker 07

There is some, I I do feel, um.

• 55:30Speaker 07

The smell of a Christmas tree genuinely puts me back to, I had a specific Christmas. When I was nine, nineteen eighty Christmas. John Lennon had just been killed.

• 55:43Speaker 07

Not that that was all of it, but but there was a lot go- at the time, we didn't have a telly. So the radio was on all the time, so John Lennon was on all the time, Beatles were on all the time.

• 55:51Jessie Ware?

Were you a big Beatles fan at that point, as much as you are now?

• 55:55Speaker 07

I really liked them, almost like you like cartoon characters, you know what I mean, because I just, I I love the Beatles just because they were so appealing to a nine year old as well as.

• 56:02Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 56:02Speaker 07

To everyone else, um, and I'm, that is like my benchmark Christmas for me, nineteen eighty for some reason, um.

• 56:09Speaker 06

What present did you get, can you remember?

• 56:11Speaker 07

I, well, one present I got was a a pocket, um. Fruit machine, so you press a little button and it.

• 56:18Speaker 06

  The pinky thing, oh yeah.

• 56:19Jessie Ware?

  That sounds great.

• 56:20Speaker 07

Yeah, I bought one on eBay the other day, just to kind of, I think, you get to a certain age. You might not have got there yet, but you get to a certain age and you think. Um, you really crave stuff from being a kid, it's just weird, it's it's not, frankly, it's not very interesting. But like, I've I've, in the last few years, I've started rebuying all the old football magazines that I used to buy as a kid. I used to be a Man U fanatic.

• 56:44Jessie Ware?

  Me too.

• 56:44Speaker 06

Oh, you're not supporting Man U anymore?

• 56:46Speaker 07

Not anymore, um, no, I just like watching football now, I'm an England fan and that's painful.

• 56:50Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 56:50Speaker 07

My my son is a Spurs nut.

• 56:52Speaker 06

So is her husband, yeah, and he's made all her children.

• 56:55Jessie Ware?

They had fun last night though.

• 56:56Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 56:57Speaker 06

But he's made all your children.

• 56:58Speaker 07

My fun is, yeah, and I don't, I don't need to get my weekends ruined anymore by that, you know, I'd think, I like watching, you know, I support England. That's enough of a pain.

• 57:07Jessie Ware?

Will you go to the L A? I feel like that could be quite, maybe try and get like a, you know.

• 57:12Speaker 07

Maybe, well, I've been to, I've taken my, I took Grace to the, um, the Euros last year, the final.

• 57:17Jessie Ware?

  Okay, wow, amazing.

• 57:18Speaker 07

I took Joe to the Euros in twenty twenty one, as was, at Wembley. Very exciting. I like the fact that we're a decent team.

• 57:26Jessie Ware?

So what, what is, if we were being invited round to your house.

• 57:29Speaker 07

I mean, that, that won't happen. It gen- it genuinely won't happen.

• 57:33Speaker 06

I was hoping for Jonathan Ross's Halloween party. I think we've got more chance of that than going to his house for dinner.

• 57:39Speaker 07

Yeah, yeah, you have, to be fair, yeah.

• 57:42Speaker 06

But could you get us into your play? Cause it's sold out.

• 57:46Speaker 07

It's not, I know it's not fucking sold out.

• 57:48Speaker 06

  Is it not?

• 57:48Speaker 07

  No.

• 57:48Jessie Ware?

Oh, that's why he's fucking doing this.

• 57:50Speaker 06

  Oh, okay.

• 57:50Speaker 07

Do you think I'd be schlepping around everywhere? Fucking hell.

• 57:54Jessie Ware?

Oh, the day that we wanted to do.

• 57:56Speaker 07

No, to be honest, I, I actually genuinely don't know how to say it. I think it's doing okay, okay. I would love to see my play and, you know, come backstage and I will definitely say hello, not for long. Not for long, especially if it's a two show day, I'm not gonna fuck around. I've done enough of that shit.

• 58:13Speaker 06

When it's two shows, do you have a little schloth in the middle?

• 58:17Speaker 07

  Yeah, you try.

• 58:18Speaker 06

  You try, so you say.

• 58:19Jessie Ware?

Do you feel like cabin crew?

• 58:21Speaker 07

You've, well, you feel cabin feverish.

• 58:23Jessie Ware?

  Oh, right, okay.

• 58:25Speaker 07

Again, this is not meant to be a hu- humble bragging anyway, but because.

• 58:31Speaker 07

Cause I have people who come and see me. And they don't necessarily all leave between.

• 58:36Jessie Ware?

When you say, to people that come and see you fans.

• 58:38Speaker 07

As in fans, you know, fans.

• 58:39Jessie Ware?

And are these Sherlock fans or are these Lord, cause you've been in such kind of everything.

• 58:44Speaker 07

No, I th- I think Sherlock is definitely, um, it's, you know, I, see, it's weird because I haven't done a play for six years. So it's genuinely interesting for me to see that my, you know, the people who were coming to see me multiple times, they might have. They might be doing something else now, you know, genuinely, I have no idea who or.

• 59:01Speaker 06

Yeah, they might be love actually, like.

• 59:03Speaker 07

Yeah, it's gonna be American tourists, you're a Raffatchi fan.

• 59:06Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 59:07Speaker 07

But, but they don't leave, so, so you can kind of feel like you go, I wanna go out and fucking have a walk around, but then, you know.

• 59:13Speaker 06

  You can't.

• 59:13Speaker 07

  You can't always do that.

• 59:15Speaker 06

And Soho Theatre, where is it?

• 59:17Speaker 07

No, not Soho Theatre, that's on D2C, correct, yeah. It's actually, you know what I found out the other night, it's called At Soho Place, that's the name of it.

• 59:23Jessie Ware?

I, um, but I, I want to thank, I want to thank you.

• 59:27Speaker 07

By the way, you can have dessert.

• 59:28Jessie Ware?

  No, it's fine.

• 59:29Speaker 07

  Why?

• 59:29Speaker 06

  We felt it was disrespectful.

• 59:31Speaker 07

Honest to God, of course not.

• 59:32Jessie Ware?

No, we're not gonna like throw a fucking delicious cake in your face.

• 59:36Speaker 06

Striking us all like with lightning coming through the ceiling.

• 59:39Speaker 07

I mean, he's already got your fucking number.

• 59:41Speaker 06

I know, he's got my number already.

• 59:43Speaker 07

Yeah. This is lovely, I love this.

• 59:45Speaker 06

  Do you love it, darling?

• 59:46Speaker 07

  Thank you so much, yeah.

• 59:46Speaker 06

  Such a pleasure.

• 59:47Jessie Ware?

Would you classify that nearly as a crisp?

• 59:52Speaker 07

Don't do that, don't do that. Do you know, this year, this year is the first year I, I never break Lent, seriously.

• 1:00:00Jessie Ware?

  You look scared.

• 1:00:00Speaker 07

And I, and I'm not, um, I'm not a very religious person, but I, I, now, as soon as I go, oh, it's for Lent, I just don't break it. This year, I have, a couple of times, and it's never happened before.

• 1:00:10Speaker 06

  Have my pudding.

• 1:00:11Speaker 07

I know, but I've done it already, I know, but I've done it already.

• 1:00:14Speaker 06

Do you think three strikes and you're out? Yeah, I think so.

• 1:00:17Jessie Ware?

  And on that note.

• 1:00:18Speaker 07

I think that's how the science of it works.

• 1:00:19Jessie Ware?

  Martin Freeman, you.

• 1:00:21Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 1:00:21Jessie Ware?

  Martin Freeman, you.

• 1:00:23Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 1:00:24Jessie Ware?

You're rude, but you're funny, and, um, and I do fucking remember you.

• 1:00:29Speaker 07

  That's my best review ever.

• 1:00:30Speaker 06

  And you're a delight.

• 1:00:32Speaker 07

  God bless you.

• 1:00:32Jessie Ware?

Um, thanks so much, it's been such a pleasure to get to know you.

• 1:00:36Speaker 07

  Thank you.

• 1:00:37Jessie Ware?

And, um, and to chat with you, and good luck with the play.

• 1:00:40Speaker 07

  Thank you very much.

• 1:00:40Jessie Ware?

  At.

• 1:00:41Speaker 07

  At, at Soho Place.

• 1:00:43Jessie Ware?

The At Soho Place, The Fifth Step.

• 1:00:45Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 1:00:46Jessie Ware?

Jack Lowden, it's gonna be amazing.

• 1:00:47Speaker 07

By David Ireland, we, we haven't even mentioned David Ireland, he's an amazing writer, it, it's, it's gonna be, you know, Finn Denherthog is our director, and David Ireland, I think, is one of the best writers around now, I cannot wait, oh, is it, me and Jack are occasionally texting each other going, it's gonna be so exciting.

• 1:01:02Jessie Ware?

I can't wait to see you on stage again.

• 1:01:03Speaker 07

You're not getting in, but, um, no, but, I mean, I'll tell you about it.

• 1:01:07Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, no, cool, yeah.

• 1:01:08Speaker 07

No, uh, well, no, thank you very much, um, it's been really lovely to, um, meet you both properly and have some lovely food. This is really good.

• 1:01:15Speaker 06

  Thanks for coming, thank you.

• 1:01:16Speaker 07

  You're very welcome.

• 1:01:16Jessie Ware?

  Maybe you can try this.

• 1:01:19Speaker 07

I don't know that I could get it to stand up for that long, ooh, you can't say that anymore.

• 1:01:35Jessie Ware?

I mean, apart from the fact that Martin Freeman just told me that this just completely annihilated my summer shirt.

• 1:01:42Speaker 06

  What's he say?

• 1:01:43Jessie Ware?

He said, "Jesse, next time, please can you just wear a slightly bigger white shirt that looks slightly more like a Victorian sleeping gown."

• 1:01:52Speaker 06

  He's so funny.

• 1:01:56Jessie Ware?

I loved him. He's great. He silenced you.

• 1:01:59Speaker 06

He silenced me, but he was teasing. He only silenced me for a second, darling.

• 1:02:05Jessie Ware?

  I loved him.

• 1:02:06Speaker 06

I loved him too. Just gorgeous. He was fun, he was flirty and all the things you want in a man.

• 1:02:12Jessie Ware?

  And he loved your food?

• 1:02:15Speaker 06

  Yeah. A few helpings.

• 1:02:18Jessie Ware?

He did, we loved that. He potentially is up there in top three slowest eaters, but he did acknowledge that. So I have respect for him.

• 1:02:25Speaker 06

Yeah, I do. And since he hadn't eaten meat for about 30 years, I think he did well.

• 1:02:30Jessie Ware?

Yeah. It was a real pleasure to have him on and chat to him. Just like a really funny, nice guy.

• 1:02:37Speaker 06

I can't wait to see The Fifth Step.

• 1:02:39Jessie Ware?

Absolutely. The Fifth Step, playing at Soho Place Theatre. Preview's the 10th of May. Go and get tickets.

• 1:02:47Speaker 06

He didn't have pudding because he's doing Lent. So more for us, darling.

• 1:02:52Jessie Ware?

Okay, make me a slice. Thank you for listening and we'll see you next week.
