Danny Dyer

We have actor, presenter, and national treasure Danny Dyer round for lunch this week. Mum wondered who would out swear each other over the meal, but we were both on our best behaviour! We learned about his close relationship with playwright Harold Pinter, his love of his mum’s shepherds pie, his thoughts on being related to the royals, his plans to open a Kent caravan park with his daughter Dani, and we discover his starter of choice for a burger is… another burger! We can’t wait to pop down to the caravan park for a holiday, save a spot for us Dyers! Danny’s new film ‘Marching Powder’ is in cinemas now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacy for more information.

• 1:05Jessie Ware?

Hello and welcome to Table manners. I'm Jessie Ware and we're in a very sunny Neve Ross. It's glorious.

• 1:13Speaker 04

  It is gorgeous.

• 1:13Jessie Ware?

  Spring has sprung.

• 1:15Speaker 04

  It's your son's birthday.

• 1:16Jessie Ware?

  My son's birthday today.

• 1:17Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:18Jessie Ware?

So I thought I'd not only cook a pancake, because it's also Shrove Tuesday.

• 1:23Speaker 04

Yeah, are we having pancakes later? Have you done the batter?

• 1:27Jessie Ware?

No, because I've been cooking bloody focaccia.

• 1:29Speaker 04

  Okay, darling.

• 1:30Jessie Ware?

And now, listen, the guest that we've got on today could swear more than me.

• 1:34Speaker 04

I think it's going to be a close call today.

• 1:37Jessie Ware?

  Um.

• 1:37Speaker 04

  He's well-armed.

• 1:39Jessie Ware?

When Elizabeth Day had him on her podcast, she had to do a warning at the beginning. So, I mean, listen.

• 1:45Speaker 04

Darling, we've got explicit on our warning already because of you.

• 1:49Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, but listen.

• 1:50Speaker 04

  So it's fine.

• 1:51Jessie Ware?

  I guess if you're offended.

• 1:52Speaker 04

Yeah. Don't miss it. Has Alice, have you got your bleep on?

• 1:58Jessie Ware?

I don't think there's, did you, he was at the Brits at the weekend and

• 2:02Speaker 04

I didn't hear what he said.

• 2:03Jessie Ware?

Watching a silent movie when Danny Dyer was on because they had to kind of silence it all.

• 2:08Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 2:08Jessie Ware?

Very interested to see what he said, actually. I'm really excited about having Danny Dyer on. He's a national treasure. He's been working in the business for 30 years. Harold Pinter's muse, mum.

• 2:20Speaker 04

  I know.

• 2:20Jessie Ware?

He's worked with all the greats. Helen Mirren, Mark Rylance, what, David Tennant in Rivals. And I feel like he is having a fabulous time at the moment and, oh, he's also royal, as everyone knows. If you haven't watched the Who Do You Think You Are?

• 2:38Speaker 04

Darling, was he royal or aristocratic? Because Thomas Cromwell was

• 2:41Jessie Ware?

  He's related to a king.

• 2:42Speaker 04

But Thomas Cromwell was a rebel. He's related to Thomas Cromwell.

• 2:45Jessie Ware?

No, he's related to the king as well.

• 2:47Speaker 04

  You sure?

• 2:47Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 2:48Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 2:48Jessie Ware?

He's related to both of them.

• 2:50Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 2:50Jessie Ware?

He talked about how he really raided Thomas Cromwell because he made sure that his son was married off to Jane Seymour's sister. So Henry couldn't do anything about killing him. So basically, he's here because Thomas Cromwell was quite crafty, as we all know. But yeah, it was probably one of the best Who Do You Think You Are's because

• 3:13Speaker 04

Because I think he discovered so much about himself he didn't know.

• 3:16Jessie Ware?

Yeah, he's a boy from East London.

• 3:18Speaker 04

  Working class hero.

• 3:19Jessie Ware?

  Custom House, Cannington.

• 3:20Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 3:20Jessie Ware?

A working class hero, wanted to be an actor, first in his family, was brought up by his mum, I think because his mum and dad split up when he was quite young. And also his daughter Danny Dyer won, I think it was 2019 or 2018.

• 3:38Speaker 04

Love Island. Also married to Jared Bowen.

• 3:40Jessie Ware?

Yeah, which he's thrilled about because he's a Hammers fan.

• 3:43Speaker 04

Big, big. But what do they call the Hammers?

• 3:45Jessie Ware?

  The Hammers.

• 3:47Speaker 04

No, there was a word he used, come on something or other.

• 3:50Jessie Ware?

Well, you can talk to Danny about football. He's coming on because his new film with Nick Love, who he made Football Factory with, The Business, he's made loads of films with him. He's done Marching Powder with him and it's a reunion of sorts because they haven't worked together for a while. And that was kind of how, I guess, we all discovered him through these films, these quite seminal films.

• 4:11Speaker 04

  I thought it was EastEnders.

• 4:12Jessie Ware?

But that was much later. So, yeah, I'm sure, we're going to be talking about everything. He also talks about liking a prawn cocktail on the red carpet on the Brits.

• 4:20Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 4:21Jessie Ware?

So just to kind of add it in. We've actually got a starter today.

• 4:25Speaker 04

I know, just for Danny, Dan.

• 4:27Jessie Ware?

And a main and a pudding. I've been on starter and main, so we've got a prawn cocktail with pre-made marly rose sauce because.

• 4:33Speaker 04

  Jessie, it's so easy.

• 4:34Jessie Ware?

I don't care, Mum, I was looking for ketchup.

• 4:35Speaker 04

  Splodge of ketchup and mayonnaise.

• 4:38Jessie Ware?

  So sue me, Lenny.

• 4:40Speaker 04

  Okay, darling.

• 4:40Jessie Ware?

  Um, I've done homemade focaccia.

• 4:43Speaker 04

I know, you're shut because you're showing off.

• 4:45Jessie Ware?

I think that's the fourth time I've said it. So, yeah, I'm showing off.

• 4:49Speaker 04

  Did you make that focaccia?

• 4:50Jessie Ware?

I actually did, yeah. I actually have a starter in my fridge.

• 4:53Speaker 04

  Oh, that focaccia looks homemade.

• 4:55Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 4:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 4:56Jessie Ware?

Yeah, it is. I've just made it. Um, actually, I've been slaving away at it for two days. I've kind of made the whole meal around the focaccia. We never do pasta, so I've decided to change that.

• 5:06Speaker 04

Don't overcook it. That's all I can say.

• 5:09Jessie Ware?

  Don't.

• 5:09Speaker 04

Al dente, darling. I won't get involved.

• 5:12Jessie Ware?

I've done Henry Freestone, who is a local chef, who used to work at Peck and Sellers, now has his own restaurant called Wilson's in Ladywell. And I've been playing around with the mob app and just trying new recipes. And he has a sausage and fennel seed papadelli pasta recipe on there, which just, it tastes really good.

• 5:33Speaker 04

  Have you had it before?

• 5:35Jessie Ware?

No, but I've just tasted the sausage.

• 5:36Speaker 04

You can't go wrong with the sausage, can you, darling?

• 5:38Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 5:39Speaker 04

  No.

• 5:39Jessie Ware?

Um, so, but it did make, that could be Danny, but it did make me laugh when I said that I was going to do a sausage and tomato papadelli. What did you say?

• 5:48Speaker 04

  I said, he'll think that's a bit woke.

• 5:51Jessie Ware?

No, she went, darling, he's really anti-woke. And I don't, and I said, I don't think a papadelli sausage pasta is woke.

• 5:58Speaker 04

He might have preferred mashed potato, but let's see.

• 6:01Jessie Ware?

So today, we have two incredibly generous, wonderful people who bid to sit in on the podcast. It was at a Marie Curie lunch. Where we didn't think anybody would probably bid, um.

• 6:16Jessie Ware?

So generously to come and listen and sit in on a podcast. But it was all to raise money for Marie Curie and we're thrilled to have you here today, Anne Carrad and Kasia, who are sitting here and will be trying some of my homemade focaccia.

• 6:31Speaker 04

Are you going to serve the focaccia with the prawn cocktail?

• 6:35Jessie Ware?

  Well, I don't.

• 6:36Speaker 04

Do they have prawn cocktail in Italy?

• 6:38Jessie Ware?

I don't know, but I don't have like other bread to serve with it, so.

• 6:42Speaker 04

Okay, just give them a bit.

• 6:44Jessie Ware?

Shall I do that and then we can have more with the, and then I've just done that green salad that I'm just gonna put lemon and olive, um, oil. And then what have you done for Pudd?

• 6:52Speaker 04

I've made a homemade Bakewell tart and I made the jam myself with cherries and some raspberries. And um, I've got some custard which I can heat up or cream.

• 7:04Jessie Ware?

Great. Danny Dyer coming up on table.

• 7:15Speaker 04

I'm worried about who's going to out swear. Jessie uses profanity all the time.

• 7:20Speaker 05

Well, I've been doing live radio a lot and so I'm sort of very controlled.

• 7:23Speaker 04

  You're being good. Oh, good.

• 7:23Speaker 05

I've got an address about me, so I don't know what this, the vibe is, is this.

• 7:27Jessie Ware?

Well, you, you weren't on live TV. I mean, it was like us watching a silent movie, Danny Dyer at the Brits.

• 7:32Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah, well, I, yeah.

• 7:34Speaker 04

  Were you a bit drunk?

• 7:36Speaker 05

  Um.

• 7:38Speaker 04

  Was everyone a bit drunk?

• 7:39Speaker 05

But not really, no. I, I, I, they muted me early because they gave me in a wall to present to someone that wasn't there. So I said, and so and so can't be fucked to be here tonight.

• 7:47Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 7:48Speaker 05

And here's a video. And they started to mute me then. I didn't know this.

• 7:51Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 7:51Speaker 05

I mean, I wasn't being disrespectful. I was just going, well, she can't be fucked to be here. So no one really says that stuff.

• 7:55Speaker 04

  It's a bit rude.

• 7:56Speaker 05

It's meant to be the Brits. It's meant to be a little bit edgy.

• 7:57Jessie Ware?

  I know.

• 7:58Speaker 05

It's sort of a bit safe.

• 7:58Jessie Ware?

  It's so sweet.

• 7:59Speaker 04

And you came with a lady.

• 8:00Speaker 05

But I didn't know I was being muted early. So then I thought, I don't know why they came to the table. What did they expect?

• 8:04Speaker 04

But then you had a lady sitting next to you with a horse.

• 8:07Speaker 05

  Horse girl, the DJ.

• 8:08Speaker 04

  Oh, is that?

• 8:09Jessie Ware?

  The German DJ, yeah.

• 8:11Speaker 05

  Uh, quite a big deal.

• 8:11Speaker 04

  Did you know her?

• 8:13Speaker 05

No, no. I mean, it's with the Brits. You've been a few times.

• 8:15Speaker 04

  Could she talk?

• 8:16Speaker 05

No, uh, yeah, she can talk, but she couldn't eat. So she just had a straw that went through her sort of her mouth.

• 8:22Speaker 04

Is that how she looks all the time?

• 8:24Speaker 05

Uh, well, I don't know, maybe she goes to bed like that, or maybe she does.

• 8:27Jessie Ware?

Do you think she had a protein shake or something?

• 8:29Speaker 05

Everyone was really freaked out about this horse, weren't they?

• 8:31Speaker 04

I thought it was really odd.

• 8:32Speaker 05

Because it was next to me, maybe. It was an odd sort of pair.

• 8:35Speaker 04

Maybe you thought you were gonna ride her.

• 8:36Speaker 05

I thought, no, I thought, well.

• 8:38Speaker 04

  No, I'm not.

• 8:39Jessie Ware?

  The night is young.

• 8:40Speaker 05

The night is young, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, she was fascinating, I was like, okay, well, horse there, you know.

• 8:46Speaker 04

  Did you chat?

• 8:47Speaker 05

  A bit, not much.

• 8:48Speaker 04

  Can you speak German?

• 8:50Speaker 05

No, who, me? I can barely speak English, not German.

• 8:53Jessie Ware?

Shall we talk about the fact that, well, you talked about prawn cocktail? At the, um, at the, so I've decided to add a prawn cocktail into our, um, is that okay? Because I know that you did.

• 9:04Speaker 05

Absolutely, listen, I'm a guest and you're gaff, so whatever you put in front of me, I'll be respectful.

• 9:08Jessie Ware?

You're not a fussy eater, are you?

• 9:10Speaker 05

No, no, no, I do eat a little shit, and that's the truth, so.

• 9:13Jessie Ware?

So what did you have for dinner last?

• 9:14Speaker 05

But I do like nice food as well.

• 9:15Jessie Ware?

What did you have for dinner last night?

• 9:16Speaker 05

I had two hot dogs that I made, big sausage, mind you, the buns I bought were too small for the sausage.

• 9:21Jessie Ware?

  But that's better.

• 9:23Speaker 05

Yeah, so, yeah, I had a lot of sausage hanging out of the bun. And while I was doing my sausage, I put, I done some onions with it. Laced it with, with like, English mustard and tomato sauce, and I just gulped on two hot dogs, and that was it.

• 9:36Speaker 04

Where had you been? Why were you eating?

• 9:38Speaker 05

I've been doing, I've been doing press promotion all day, running around. I just wanted a couple of hot dogs.

• 9:43Speaker 04

  I know that one.

• 9:44Speaker 05

And do you know, like, what proper? It was a big sausage, it was a big lump. And I don't, I don't like the other ones, the sort of the German ones, you know, not for me, I want a proper big semi-cumberland. But obviously you couldn't get Cumberland sausage in a bun. So, they were big, straight, lovely sausages, and they went down so well.

• 10:03Jessie Ware?

I'm, I kind of, I don't know if this is good or bad, but I've made sausage pasta. But you had sausages last night.

• 10:10Speaker 05

  Perfect, no.

• 10:11Jessie Ware?

  Is that okay?

• 10:11Speaker 04

I think he likes sausages, yes.

• 10:14Jessie Ware?

No, I, I just got them from the local butcher, but like, they're not fresh.

• 10:17Speaker 05

And then you would, you take it all out of the thing and then you, yes, that's what I'm saying, no, I'm sure it's gonna be beautiful.

• 10:21Jessie Ware?

Okay, fine, but you know, it's a lot of sausage.

• 10:23Speaker 05

And I'm very grateful for sausage, that's what I'm saying. I don't think you can ever eat too much sausage, and that's the truth.

• 10:28Jessie Ware?

Really, yeah, yeah, cool. Um, so, let's start at the beginning.

• 10:32Speaker 04

  I feel the same.

• 10:34Jessie Ware?

When was the last time you ate a sausage, Mum?

• 10:37Speaker 04

  Actually.

• 10:38Speaker 05

Quite recent then, by the same.

• 10:40Speaker 04

Yesterday, I've got the, this is not.

• 10:42Jessie Ware?

  Yesterday you ate a sausage?

• 10:43Speaker 04

This is not pork sausage. You know, the, they're fantastic.

• 10:47Jessie Ware?

Oh, the non kosher, eh, eh, eh, kosher sausage?

• 10:51Speaker 04

No, you know the one that says this is not bacon?

• 10:53Jessie Ware?

  This, yeah.

• 10:54Speaker 04

It's called this, and this is not pork sausage. It tastes exactly like you think pork sausage would taste. It's.

• 11:01Jessie Ware?

Satan or something, you know, like, yeah, yeah. Um, I'm gonna just get on with the porn cocktail whilst Mum us.

• 11:08Speaker 04

Right, will you just put that tart in the oven if it's off?

• 11:12Speaker 05

Yeah, but it's quite hot in there, so.

• 11:13Speaker 04

Is it still hot? Okay. I made a bake. Jessie made this.

• 11:18Speaker 05

I love that you noticed. Yeah, of course I did, it's incredible. I made homemade focaccia. Of course you have. Of course I have. Yeah, so I'm really appreciating it.

• 11:25Speaker 04

She's really showing off today, Danny.

• 11:27Speaker 05

Yes, she should be, because that's a beautiful place of work, that is.

• 11:30Speaker 04

So you're here to talk about your film?

• 11:32Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 11:33Speaker 04

  Um, which I watched.

• 11:34Speaker 05

Did you watch it? Did you get a link? Which is a bit more difficult.

• 11:36Speaker 04

  I got a link.

• 11:37Speaker 05

Did you watch it on your blower? Did you watch it on your phone?

• 11:39Speaker 04

No, I watched on my iPad.

• 11:41Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 11:41Speaker 04

Which was a bit better than my phone.

• 11:43Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 11:44Speaker 04

But I wanted, if I was clever, I'd be able to, um, mirror it onto my telly. And I, but I didn't know how to do that, yeah.

• 11:51Speaker 05

Just got to search for it, the device.

• 11:52Speaker 04

I know how you do, I know what you do, but I couldn't do it. Anyway, I watched it on my iPad.

• 11:57Speaker 05

Be straight with me, I know this is a silly question for me to ask.

• 11:59Speaker 04

Well, I was slightly, I was slightly shocked.

• 12:02Speaker 05

  Go on.

• 12:03Speaker 04

Um, I'm not a fan of the C word, Danny, to be.

• 12:06Speaker 05

Well, then, it certainly is not going for you.

• 12:08Speaker 04

And, and I think that Jessie loves all of that, but the opening, the opening sequence slightly shocked me when the little baby's in the, um, the.

• 12:17Speaker 05

  Well, we're straight in.

• 12:18Speaker 04

  You were straight in.

• 12:20Speaker 05

It's important to set the tone early.

• 12:21Speaker 04

Set the tone, well, when that happened, I thought, crikey, O'Reilly. Yeah, no, it wasn't my worst nightmare.

• 12:28Speaker 05

It was your worst nightmare, that's real.

• 12:29Speaker 04

It was shocking, but I've never seen the, is it the football factory?

• 12:34Speaker 05

Don't watch the football factory, please.

• 12:35Speaker 04

  Okay, all right.

• 12:36Speaker 05

You'll be traumatized for the rest of your life.

• 12:39Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 12:39Speaker 05

I think she'd like the business. Well, the business, the business is slightly, do you like the good film Goodfellas?

• 12:45Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 12:45Speaker 05

  It's like the Cockney Goodfellas.

• 12:46Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 12:47Speaker 05

It's not as good, a bit sexy, but I think there is, there is the C word in it.

• 12:52Speaker 05

I think for me, it's about, it's about intent.

• 12:54Speaker 04

Do you use the C word all the time, anyway?

• 12:57Speaker 05

I was brought up by very strong women that used the C word.

• 13:00Speaker 04

  Oh, really?

• 13:01Speaker 05

Very, very strong matriarchs, that, not, not in an aggressive way. It's just, uh, uh, coming from a very east London, working class, council estate background, that word is used quite a lot.

• 13:10Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 13:10Speaker 05

And especially by women, not all women, I'm not labelling all women that say it. It was only later on in life when I started to mix in certain circles that I realised, oh, we don't say that word.

• 13:19Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 13:20Speaker 05

But, um, you know, so it was, I was used to that word, uh, you know, from a young age, really. As a term of endearment, by the way.

• 13:27Speaker 04

Does your little boy say it, your son?

• 13:28Speaker 05

  No, he doesn't.

• 13:29Speaker 04

If he said it at home in front of you.

• 13:31Speaker 05

But he's in the film, isn't he?

• 13:32Speaker 04

I know in the film he does, but if he said F word and the C word.

• 13:35Speaker 05

Oh, no, he's getting it upside the head, you know, he's, yeah, yeah, I mean, he's eleven, so. Um, uh, uh, which is a bit hypocritical really, because, you know, I do swear a lot, and so does my missus. Uh, but no, no, I don't want him yet swearing. I do hear him sometimes when he's on his Playstations, effing and blinding, and that does wind me up slightly, but then I go, I can't really, can't really get on my ears.

• 13:54Speaker 04

  No, you can't really.

• 13:54Speaker 05

But no, I don't think it's white in kids, I think that's, that's what I love, a bit of a blonde cocktail, look. It's just so simple, but it's a beautiful bit of work.

• 14:01Speaker 04

Do we need the little extra forks, darling, or spoons, yeah?

• 14:04Speaker 05

Oh, you can't use that fork?

• 14:05Speaker 04

You can, you can do what you like.

• 14:07Speaker 05

You've got, you've got a special fork for your blonde cocktail?

• 14:08Speaker 04

No, it's just that we'll need another one when she does the, um, pasta.

• 14:12Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 14:13Jessie Ware?

Well, well, uh, please save me on the washing, just.

• 14:16Speaker 05

Oh, can I crack on with this fork?

• 14:17Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, do it.

• 14:18Speaker 05

And I love it, do you know what, I'll do this sometimes, I learnt this, like, bit of paprika, is it on the top?

• 14:22Jessie Ware?

Yeah, well, that's why I did it.

• 14:23Speaker 05

Get a bit of, this is what I'm saying.

• 14:24Jessie Ware?

Sorry, can we just have a moment to try the focaccia before we talk about, you know, just, just, just let me know, oh, my goodness.

• 14:30Speaker 05

And oh, look at it, it's so like.

• 14:31Jessie Ware?

Do you smell your food a lot, darling?

• 14:33Speaker 05

I do like to sniff food, yeah.

• 14:34Jessie Ware?

  I feel that.

• 14:34Speaker 05

Especially, look at that, so unmade, and oh, look at it, look.

• 14:37Speaker 04

  Delicious, darling.

• 14:40Jessie Ware?

That's really good, I have to say.

• 14:42Speaker 05

  It's perfect.

• 14:42Jessie Ware?

  It's my first life.

• 14:43Speaker 05

Do you make that a lot?

• 14:44Jessie Ware?

  No, I learnt last week.

• 14:45Speaker 05

  No way.

• 14:46Jessie Ware?

Yeah, so that's why I had to try it out again, otherwise I'll forget. I know that you should have really just like brown bread with that and butter, but.

• 14:52Speaker 05

If you can make it, why would you not do it?

• 14:54Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 14:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 14:55Speaker 05

My brother makes bread. You'd never think me and my brother come out of the same womb.

• 14:59Jessie Ware?

  Right, what does he do?

• 15:00Speaker 05

He's an accountant. He's very logical.

• 15:03Jessie Ware?

  Mm-hmm.

• 15:03Speaker 05

And he makes cheese and walnut bread.

• 15:07Jessie Ware?

  Mmm, yum.

• 15:08Speaker 04

  What a lovely combination.

• 15:10Speaker 05

  Good, isn't it?

• 15:10Speaker 04

  Mmm.

• 15:11Speaker 05

So he always brings me a little gift when he comes around of bread or something, just because he knows I can't do it as well. So it's a little kick up the bollocks for me, you know what I mean? Sorry about my language, but.

• 15:18Speaker 04

That's fine, you don't need to, but I do swear, Danny.

• 15:21Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 15:21Speaker 04

  Uh, uh.

• 15:22Jessie Ware?

You can, mum, where did I learn?

• 15:24Speaker 05

So it's the one word you don't like.

• 15:25Speaker 04

You never learnt that C word from me, darling.

• 15:26Jessie Ware?

But, um, I wanted to know, um, I know your son's in the film and, and he was allowed to, it, it was kind of because he was the only kid that was gonna be allowed to swear so much and wasn't, was that, yeah. But I mean, it was kind of comfortable and.

• 15:38Speaker 05

It was a tricky one because they was gonna have to cut the character because what we're trying to do with this film is it's quite lighthearted. But we're trying to think about your, your, your actions as a parent really does rub off on your children. And the fact that my character, Jack Jones, is, he's all over the place, really, he doesn't know where he sits in society, but he's certainly not been a good father. And so his son is starting to pick up his traits. So we needed a child to swear.

• 16:00Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 16:00Speaker 05

And say stuff that, you know, obviously a lot of parents, uh, we've got kids that are actors and chaperones, they just weren't having it. And also it's really hard when you're working with, because I've done this a lot over the years in my career. You, you, you, you've got to pretend to be other kids like they're fathers. On EastEnders, I swear to you, they give you like a newborn child, someone, there, I, I remember I was walking through L Street and there was a queue of pregnant women auditioning. I was like, what are you auditioning for? Oh no, I'm auditioning the baby.

• 16:29Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 16:29Speaker 05

So it isn't born yet. And they're like, no, no, no, because on EastEnders, obviously they have a lot of babies born and they literally go for newborns.

• 16:36Speaker 04

  Oh, really?

• 16:37Speaker 05

So you, there's this delicate little child, they just come up to you, go, here, and you're like, whoa, here we go. So you've got to say your lines with somebody else's newborn child. It's all quite daunting and a bit weird. So with this film, you need, uh, it's really hard to create chemistry with a child.

• 16:53Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 16:53Speaker 05

  That you don't know.

• 16:54Jessie Ware?

  Okay, yeah.

• 16:54Speaker 05

And so me and my boy are very close and we just played on set.

• 16:57Speaker 04

  He's a gorgeous boy.

• 16:59Speaker 05

He's a lovely kid and he's got an incredible brain. He's he's into engineering and. Like he would, I swear to you now, if a plane went over now, he would tell you what engine it's got and.

• 17:08Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 17:09Speaker 05

And and like he's obsessed with that sort of stuff. So he doesn't want to be an actor, got no interest in it.

• 17:12Jessie Ware?

Are you thrilled that he doesn't want to be an actor?

• 17:14Speaker 05

  I think so.

• 17:15Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 17:16Speaker 05

I I quite like the the fact that he just came into it and just didn't really take it that seriously and just played.

• 17:22Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 17:22Speaker 05

You know, I did ask how much money he was getting, um and he did get paid for it, not a lot. But, you know, he just he got he got some time off school. And he really enjoyed it with me, but hasn't really asked since about it. Uh he he's he's not allowed to come to the premiere, uh because obviously it's an eighteen.

• 17:37Jessie Ware?

  Mm.

• 17:38Speaker 05

And the cinema world would unfortunately lose their licence, I was told. So even though he's in it.

• 17:42Jessie Ware?

Uh it's funny, isn't it? Because. Your son is showing that he he's not that interested in.

• 17:48Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 17:48Jessie Ware?

Doing it. Your daughter was beloved by the nation when she won.

• 17:52Speaker 04

  She's gorgeous.

• 17:53Jessie Ware?

And you have talked about how you struggled with, well, no, you didn't struggle, but you were worried about her. You said. You can be the on top and then everyone can hate your guts and it was really hard for her.

• 18:04Speaker 05

  Yeah, it was.

• 18:05Jessie Ware?

  And you as a family.

• 18:06Speaker 05

Well, I didn't want her to go on Love Island. I I had my.

• 18:08Speaker 04

  Why?

• 18:09Speaker 05

Conceptions about, well, I'd never really seen it, I suppose, and I'd heard, I think back in the day it was worse. You know, they encourage them to go into a room and have a roll about and stuff and as a father.

• 18:17Speaker 04

Oh, my god. I've never not seen that, darling.

• 18:20Speaker 05

I want to have rollabouts and enjoy herself. She's entitled to have sex and have amazing times, but.

• 18:24Speaker 04

You don't want to see it, yeah, yeah.

• 18:26Speaker 05

So I so I had a bit of that going on. And then she didn't tell me. I was the last one to be told. And then she got in a car and just left. And then you just become a viewer. You you don't get no contact from no producers or anything like that. So you just sit there like that when it starts and go, how's it gonna be?

• 18:39Jessie Ware?

  Oh, god.

• 18:40Speaker 05

And I've got to say, she was incredible in it.

• 18:42Jessie Ware?

You must have been so proud.

• 18:43Speaker 05

Every single night because I was watching her. I couldn't have wrote a better script for her. She was so. Just herself and normal and sort of, you know, quite vulnerable and. Because she came in as my daughter, I realised that that might have been one of the reasons why they put her in there. So I was slightly guilty about, oh, what if people hate me, they're gonna hate her. But she just played it out perfectly and it was just a wonderful thing to watch, actually. And it did change her life. She was working in a pub before that. And she came out, won it, but I realised that she was more famous than me.

• 19:11Jessie Ware?

  That must be tough.

• 19:12Speaker 05

And, no, listen, I but I knew I'd fear around when it turns, because it inevitably turns. Everyone was celebrating her so much and Margot Robbie and Eddie Redmayne were doing interviews and talking about her, because it really hit something that year.

• 19:24Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 19:25Speaker 05

  It was a great summer.

• 19:26Jessie Ware?

  It was a great year.

• 19:27Speaker 05

It really caught something and so she had a really great run. She moved out immediately, got a penthouse in.

• 19:32Speaker 04

Was she with the boyfriend? Did she move in with him?

• 19:34Speaker 05

She was doing it for a bit, it didn't work out.

• 19:36Speaker 04

  Did you like him?

• 19:37Speaker 05

Uh, no, I didn't really meet him, to be honest with you. It turned out he wasn't, well, you know, he was on the telly, which is, you know, of course, he's not real, is he? If you think about it, you're in a villa, it's a structured show, there's no phones, there's no distractions, how real can you be? It's only when you get out. And so, look, they they made a go of it, it didn't work out.

• 19:56Speaker 04

Was there anybody else that you saw of the boys that you thought he'd have been a better bat?

• 20:01Speaker 05

No, I thought he was perfect.

• 20:02Speaker 04

Okay, you thought he was all right?

• 20:04Speaker 05

They did a really mean thing on it as well, where they sort of made it look like he was cheating on her. I was fuming. I was like, I want a number.

• 20:11Jessie Ware?

  Was it Casa Ramon?

• 20:11Speaker 05

I want fucking numbers. I've got a ring this producer, yeah, but they pretended. And he was sleeping outside on a bed and she was crying her eyes out. And I knew this was gonna happen to me, this always happens to me. I was like, that hasn't happened to you.

• 20:23Speaker 05

What are you doing to this poor child? So, yeah, it was really hard to watch, but she came out, she really just went with it. She got like a clothing range. She's such a beautiful kid. I'm so proud. I'm proud of all my kids.

• 20:34Jessie Ware?

  And she's got babies.

• 20:35Speaker 05

She's got three children, number four, and she's just had the twins, the terribles, as we call them.

• 20:39Jessie Ware?

  Oy, oy, boy, twins.

• 20:41Speaker 05

  They were a gift.

• 20:42Speaker 04

And she's made a good choice with the, um, old.

• 20:45Speaker 05

Well, this is the thing, this has come back.

• 20:47Jessie Ware?

Mum wants to talk about this.

• 20:48Speaker 04

West Ham. Did you, did you know him before? Because you're a big supporter.

• 20:52Speaker 05

I was aware of him when we bought him. I didn't know he was when we bought him, bought him for seventeen million.

• 20:55Speaker 04

Where did you buy him from?

• 20:56Speaker 05

  We bought it from Hull.

• 20:57Speaker 04

  Oh, really?

• 20:58Speaker 05

So he was unknown to us and he came along and then he started to play for us and he was amazing. Dani then moved next door to him when she was with her ex, right? And I was very excited about this. Obviously, she was of someone else at the time, who she had a child with. Um, and uh, she, it was weird because he, some packages went to his house and he dropped the packages off. Said, oh Danny, I've got some packages of yours. And she did say to me on the phone, Dad, Dad is, his eyes, I mean, these, these beautiful blue, I said, they are very beautiful, those eyes.

• 21:29Speaker 04

Is he, is he a Londoner?

• 21:31Speaker 05

  No, he's from Lempster.

• 21:33Speaker 04

  Where's that?

• 21:33Speaker 05

  Midlands, which is near Hereford.

• 21:35Speaker 04

  Oh, right.

• 21:36Speaker 05

So he's got a mad little twang to his accent.

• 21:38Speaker 04

But does he play on the wing?

• 21:40Speaker 05

He does play on the wing, yeah. Or he can play up front as well, but he.

• 21:42Jessie Ware?

He can play up front. We love that.

• 21:43Speaker 05

  Versatility.

• 21:44Speaker 04

Yeah, do, does he play up front at the moment for West Ham?

• 21:47Speaker 05

When we haven't got a striker, he does.

• 21:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 21:50Speaker 05

But he, he's somebody that fell in love with my dad and, you know, and then she split up with the fo- the person she was with. And he took her and her eighteen month old son on. I think that says a lot about a human being. Cause that's a hard age, by the way, like just sort of toddler.

• 22:05Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:06Speaker 05

And that just proved to me how much he was willing to take her on and love her and cherish her and her son. Really, her son is a ringer for him. They've got the same haircut.

• 22:15Speaker 04

  Oh, funny.

• 22:17Speaker 05

But, you know, it's a, it's a really beautiful little story.

• 22:19Speaker 04

  Married?

• 22:20Speaker 05

They're getting married in about two and a half months, yeah.

• 22:22Speaker 04

Oh, fantastic. Well, oh my god.

• 22:24Speaker 05

I'm at that realm. I'm the grandfather realm and I'm now giving away your kids.

• 22:28Speaker 04

  Oh, how gorgeous.

• 22:30Speaker 05

Giving your kid away, isn't it?

• 22:30Speaker 04

  Oh, it's ridiculous, yeah.

• 22:32Jessie Ware?

Did you have Danny when you were?

• 22:34Speaker 05

  Eighteen.

• 22:34Jessie Ware?

  Eighteen.

• 22:35Speaker 04

  Crikey.

• 22:36Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 22:36Speaker 05

Yeah, me and my, me and my wife, we've been together since we were thirteen. Went to school together, yeah.

• 22:43Jessie Ware?

I went to school with my husband.

• 22:45Speaker 05

  Wow, that, isn't it rare?

• 22:46Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 22:46Speaker 04

  Jessie was at primary school.

• 22:48Jessie Ware?

We were primary, we weren't going out of primary school though. No, we, no, we went to primary school together.

• 22:52Speaker 05

  Each other in primary school?

• 22:53Jessie Ware?

No, we're in the sc- our, our um, wedding invite was us in the school, um, swimming team. And, and I'm standing next to him and I'd worn heels that day, so I looked like a bloody Amazonian next to him and he's like supporting.

• 23:04Speaker 04

  He's a little skinny boy.

• 23:06Jessie Ware?

Now supports Spurs. Um, and that was our invite, that was our invite, but yeah. But, um, but yeah.

• 23:11Speaker 05

So it's hard, isn't it? Over the years, cause we change as human beings, don't we?

• 23:15Jessie Ware?

Yeah, and I'm interested because you've been in the public eye since your, what, twenties?

• 23:19Speaker 05

Yes, probably. I think Human Traffic was the film that sort of made me semi-famous and so twenty-one, yeah, when I started to experience what fame is.

• 23:27Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, and I.

• 23:27Speaker 05

Toxicating, isn't it? And it's odd.

• 23:29Jessie Ware?

And, and I, I wanna, there's two questions I want to ask, but, you know, you were talking about when you're on the hype and then. You get hated. Did you feel like you ever had that moment where you? People turned on you. Because I think that we all think of you as a national treasure.

• 23:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 23:47Jessie Ware?

But you have had a very long career and it has been full of kind of, you know, there was.

• 23:51Speaker 05

So only when social media come beca- gets involved, because I'm, uh, cause because you think back in the day, you didn't like someone. Slag them off in your living room. There was no way of telling, now people have access to us, don't they?

• 24:01Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 24:01Speaker 05

So they can say the most nasty.

• 24:03Speaker 04

They want to say it, they write it, yeah.

• 24:05Speaker 05

I was famous sort of pre and after, so it was only that I sort of became aware of, oh, people actually could quite hate me and think I'm a joke. Especially with the Twitter thing in the early days, where I would buy it a lot.

• 24:15Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 24:16Speaker 05

Cause I thought, okay, what gives you the right to wanna talk to me like that because you've never met me? So I always get claimed to be a fake hard man, I can't have a fight. I've never claimed to be a hard man. This is what the press do. Okay, I made some films where there's a bit of aggression in it. I talk in a very working class accent and I might have a bit of a swagger, I walk a bit like a duck. But in general, I've never gone, I'm a hard man, let's have a fight.

• 24:37Speaker 04

  Are you hard?

• 24:38Speaker 05

  What, what, what now, or?

• 24:40Speaker 04

No, were you? I mean, when you were younger, would you take people on?

• 24:44Speaker 05

Rough area, so you know, you've got to learn to hold your hands up a bit, otherwise people will walk over you, but I had the ability to make people laugh. Which was a good way of calming things down. And also you just become mates with the naughty ones, the naughty little fuckers and then no one. So I've never claimed it, but there's a whole thing of people, geezers, that wanna tweet me or Instagram me, couldn't have a fight, look at me, you're a fake hard man. Of course, I'm an actor, so therefore I am a fake hard man.

• 25:06Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:06Speaker 05

So I've never quite understood what they mean by it, but, but yet that's when I realised that actually I do divide people and I think. If you're opinionated like me, I'm not opinionated, I've just got a view on stuff. Uh, people don't like it. Um, so I, I understand it, it, and, and also, as I've got older, I've realised, it's none of my business what people think of me. How can I expect that everyone love me?

• 25:27Speaker 04

Jesse says, don't read the comments. Yeah, but Jesse says, don't read the comments. So you were born at, is it Custom House?

• 25:34Speaker 05

  Custom House, yes.

• 25:35Speaker 04

Custom House, it's such a grand name, Custom House.

• 25:38Speaker 05

Sounds like it, but it's a fucking shit hole to be honest.

• 25:41Speaker 04

Well, I know it a little bit.

• 25:42Speaker 05

So I was born in Custom House, which is an area on the docks.

• 25:44Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:45Speaker 05

Now, it's near a place called Cannon Town.

• 25:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:47Speaker 05

Now, Custom House and Cannon Town were sort of rivals in a way, in a sense. If you're from Custom House, you're a Mauser. If you're from Canyon Town, you're a Tanna. Right, anyway. When I was young doing interviews, every time I said Custom House, they didn't know where it was and they go, what house? So I'd start to say I was from Canyon Town, which was a huge mistake.

• 26:03Speaker 04

  Why did you do that?

• 26:04Speaker 05

Because I was sick of explaining what Custom House was.

• 26:06Speaker 04

So now they think, people think you're a Tanna and not a Mauser.

• 26:09Speaker 05

Facebook page that was going on going Canyon Town, not Custom House. Or Custom House, not Canyon Town. So, you know, I upset a few people. I learnt early, you know what I mean? I was just, you know, this whole media thing, it's, and I'm proud, I'm very proud of where I'm from and my roots. I, you know, all this Cockney thing.

• 26:24Speaker 04

  You are proper.

• 26:25Speaker 05

No, but I'm not because I didn't hear the Bow Bells.

• 26:26Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 26:27Speaker 05

So I'm, I would say I'm an East Londoner.

• 26:29Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 26:29Speaker 05

Um, cause people go, he's not a Cockney, didn't hear the Bow Bells. But the Bow Bells is up near Liverpool Street. There's a whole area of East Londoners that would not be deemed as Cockneys cause they didn't hear the Bow Bells.

• 26:39Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 26:40Speaker 05

So there aren't many Cockneys out there really, cause the Bow Bells aren't even that loud apparently. I don't even know if they still bell these.

• 26:45Speaker 04

So who wa- who was there in your family? There's your mum.

• 26:48Speaker 05

  My mum.

• 26:49Speaker 04

  There was your dad.

• 26:50Speaker 05

  Your old man, yep.

• 26:51Speaker 04

  And there's, you've got a brother.

• 26:52Speaker 05

  Yeah, my brother Tony, yes.

• 26:53Speaker 04

  Brother Tony who bakes bread.

• 26:55Speaker 05

  Yeah, and my sister Kayleigh.

• 26:56Speaker 04

  And what's Kayleigh do?

• 26:58Speaker 05

Kayleigh, Kayleigh is somebody, um, who's, uh, she's a housewife mother. She learnt how to do, um, nails and stuff.

• 27:06Speaker 04

  Oh, wow.

• 27:07Speaker 05

Beautician side of things. So she hasn't really progressed with it for some reason. She's those young children. Um, you know, I love them so much. I, I, I, my siblings are everything to me, really.

• 27:17Speaker 04

  Is she old or young?

• 27:18Speaker 05

She's younger. So I'm the eldest.

• 27:20Speaker 04

Oh, you're the eldest of everyone. And so your parents split up when you were quite young.

• 27:24Speaker 05

  About nine.

• 27:25Speaker 04

  Oh, shame. It's tough.

• 27:26Speaker 05

  Life, isn't it, though?

• 27:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:28Speaker 05

They should never got married. It's weird. You know what I mean? They had nothing in common.

• 27:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:31Speaker 05

Surprised they lasted as long as they did. It's weird because they're best mates now.

• 27:35Speaker 04

  Oh, really?

• 27:35Speaker 05

Do that when they were married. They really got on really well. I remember once, years later, I caught them tonguing in the kitchen.

• 27:40Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 27:41Speaker 05

Oh, hold on, they're gonna, they're gonna make a garve it. So I think they're very still, they, they was always very attracted to each other, but just that fuck all in common.

• 27:47Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 27:48Speaker 05

My old man used to buy the sun, me mum would buy the mirror. Back then, the mirror was known as a sort of loony lefty. He, he always used to call her a loony lefty. I didn't understand what it meant. Now I sort of do.

• 27:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:57Jessie Ware?

What was a memorable dish from your childhood?

• 28:00Speaker 05

Very basic, really, uh, shepherd's pie being one of them.

• 28:04Speaker 04

  Do you like shepherd's pie?

• 28:05Speaker 05

Do you like soup? I do like shepherd's pie. I don't know anyone that, well, I'm a vegetarian, so obviously, I mean, shepherd's pie is so comforting.

• 28:10Speaker 04

I'm not a fan of it.

• 28:11Speaker 05

  I love it.

• 28:12Speaker 04

I just don't get it. Did she put, do you put extra bits in? Because I put baked beans in mine.

• 28:18Speaker 05

No, she never would put beans in it. No, you'd have a little bit of carrot in it and.

• 28:21Speaker 04

  A carrot, onion.

• 28:22Speaker 05

Bit of, yeah, onion. She'd put the, the difference between, was it a cottage pie? She put cheese on it.

• 28:28Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 28:28Speaker 05

So what's that make it? It's not shepherd's pie.

• 28:30Speaker 04

  I don't know.

• 28:30Jessie Ware?

A cottage pie, isn't a cottage pie with beef?

• 28:33Speaker 04

One is lamb. Did she do beef or lamb?

• 28:36Speaker 05

I think it was the beef.

• 28:37Jessie Ware?

So you were having cottage pie, I remember.

• 28:39Speaker 05

  She lied to me.

• 28:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 28:41Jessie Ware?

No, but I think that's more common, but maybe, is cottage pie less tomato?

• 28:44Speaker 05

No, it's all with peas, gravy, it's just something quite comfy. Like my nan, who was the real matriarch of our family, old Polly. Everyone would go to her house on a Saturday on a council estate in Stratford and she would serve up for forty roasts. And everyone would shit round, you know, have a little plate like that. She would do it every week and then. My grandad died and just stopped because the men couldn't deal with coming round and, you know. You know the men done the classic thing, when my grandad got ill, he got prostate, he died within six months, he got really ill, but they wouldn't go and see him. No, I don't wanna go and see him like that. I wanna remember him like the old days. I wanna remember big old Jack. And you go, no, no, you can't deal with it. You don't wanna go and say goodbye to him or hold his hand. So, so, so the men sort of, sort of detracted from the whole thing. And then it stopped going.

• 29:27Speaker 05

Everyone stopped going round my nan's. It was really quite sad because, you know, it was like, it was great to be hanging out with all your cousins and. You know, your aunts and your uncles. There's something about that, you know, that I feel is missing now. I think it's quite rare to have all your family around, you know. You know, it's like.

• 29:42Speaker 04

Did your nan move in with your mum?

• 29:44Speaker 05

She did for a bit when she got ill, but I moved in with my nan when my grandad got ill. And I sort of nursed him and stuff. I became really close to him.

• 29:51Speaker 04

I love that top, by the way. It looks gorgeous.

• 29:54Speaker 05

  Do you know what?

• 29:54Speaker 04

  Are you hot?

• 29:55Speaker 05

I have a very gay stylist and he's a brilliant man.

• 29:58Speaker 04

  Well, he's doing well.

• 30:00Jessie Ware?

  Best stylist, yeah.

• 30:01Speaker 05

  It's a good combination.

• 30:02Speaker 04

I mean, oh, you're hot because you can take it off if you want. All right, darling.

• 30:05Speaker 05

So I don't wanna get me bangers out.

• 30:06Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 30:08Jessie Ware?

Um, so shepherd's pie and you were saying about a soup, you said your mum made soup, did you just say that?

• 30:14Speaker 05

  Did she?

• 30:14Jessie Ware?

I never heard that. When you said shepherd's pie, you went, she makes really good shepherd's pie.

• 30:18Speaker 05

No, no, no, it wasn't gonna be soup, no, so it would be quite basic, so I was gonna say she would do soup noodles with hot dogs.

• 30:23Jessie Ware?

  Oh, soup noodles, okay.

• 30:24Speaker 05

Yeah, nothing quite as classy as soup, you know, quite basic dinners really. Uh, and you know, the eighties was a day when you go to dinner slam down in front of you and you eat it, you know, like nowadays, bringing up children, they've got choices.

• 30:36Speaker 04

Do you give your son a choice?

• 30:37Speaker 05

Well, he's, he, he's quite bland with food, he doesn't really wanna try stuff, um, he doesn't really wanna eat, it does annoy me. But I've just got to feed him, that's my job, I've got, it's my responsibility is.

• 30:46Speaker 04

But did he have a hot dog last night?

• 30:48Speaker 05

No, he didn't have a hot dog, he just had plain pasta and then a great cheese and he puts the cheese on the top of it for some reason.

• 30:53Jessie Ware?

  That's delicious.

• 30:54Speaker 05

But he won't eat my spaghetti bolognese, which really winds me up, it's a good one.

• 30:56Jessie Ware?

  Oh, he didn't eat mine.

• 30:58Speaker 05

Won't have the sauce off it, I'm like, why not? So he would rather eat plain pasta on its jack, which I find.

• 31:04Speaker 04

What's, what's your special thing about your spag? Well.

• 31:08Speaker 05

Well, I put a bit of, um, sherry in it.

• 31:12Jessie Ware?

  Sherry?

• 31:13Speaker 05

Just a little drop, do you know what I mean? Obviously marmite, which is the classic one, isn't it? You know, you put a bit of marmite in it.

• 31:17Speaker 04

Oh, do you put marmite in yours?

• 31:18Jessie Ware?

I, I, I like a bit of marmite in it.

• 31:20Speaker 05

Um, I put a little bit of American mustard, just a little tiny little squeeze in it.

• 31:25Jessie Ware?

Wow, this is really going off piece, so I'm interested.

• 31:26Speaker 04

  This is revelatory.

• 31:29Speaker 05

Just little things that you add and I, I, I like a little bit of chili flake in it as well.

• 31:33Jessie Ware?

Danny, I just need to know whether the pinky out is because you're a royal.

• 31:38Speaker 04

  The pink.

• 31:38Jessie Ware?

Is that a royal way to drink a wine?

• 31:40Speaker 05

Weird all that, isn't it, that stuff? I don't know, I don't know, I didn't know I was doing it.

• 31:44Jessie Ware?

Um, because you're royal, it's the blood, royal blood, maybe.

• 31:46Speaker 05

It's weird all that, Danny, have you done it?

• 31:48Speaker 04

  No.

• 31:49Jessie Ware?

I'm not interesting enough, I don't think, mine would be like.

• 31:50Speaker 05

No, they come to you and then they, then they disappear.

• 31:53Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but they were, I loved when you talked about it and you were like, literally, they were like, um, yep, we're ready to start filming, because they, they knew.

• 31:59Speaker 05

There was an energy, because the thing about this job is they don't tell you anything, so.

• 32:02Jessie Ware?

Who do you think you are we're talking about? And Danny Dyer finding out that he's related to them.

• 32:05Speaker 05

It's gonna be peasants and then, you know, you go, okay, my last scene's in Westminster Abbey, how mad is that, you know, King Edward the Third. You, you just don't know until these people go away and they do this homework on you and then it comes back. I mean, who the fuck would have thought I would have been related to, you know, Henry the Second? You know, it's like incredible to me.

• 32:20Speaker 04

  And Thomas Cromwell.

• 32:22Speaker 05

  That's the one I love.

• 32:23Speaker 04

But I'm very proud of you, yeah.

• 32:24Speaker 05

Cause he was a peasant and he and he did well and he rose through the ranks.

• 32:27Speaker 04

  He's clever.

• 32:28Speaker 05

I'll tell you what, watching Wolf Hall after that was very emotional for me.

• 32:31Speaker 04

  I bet.

• 32:31Speaker 05

I got right up with Emily the Eighth, I tell you. How dare he chop my fucking fifteen times grandfather's head off.

• 32:39Jessie Ware?

Speaking of some of the greats that you've worked with, Mark Rylance played Thomas Cromwell.

• 32:43Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 32:44Jessie Ware?

You've worked with Mark Rylance, Helen Mirren, you've worked, I mean, you're the muse of Harrop Pinter.

• 32:49Speaker 05

Yeah, he was a great man, he was. Daniel Craig, I worked with Killian Murphy. I worked with Killian Murphy in a film called The Trench by William Boyd and he was like an extra. I always think, I remember looking at him going, fucking hell, he's good looking, this geezer.

• 33:01Speaker 04

  Those are.

• 33:01Speaker 05

And Ben Wisher was in it as well. I had a couple of lines in this thing called The Trench, I was like.

• 33:06Speaker 04

  God, I've never seen it.

• 33:07Jessie Ware?

Did you see, if they, like, you know, Killian and and and Ben, obviously phenomenal actors, and they had their little bit part, could you spot that they were stars?

• 33:16Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:17Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 33:18Speaker 05

Like, there's something about them. There's just, there's just something about the cut of their jib.

• 33:22Speaker 04

  The cut of their jib.

• 33:22Speaker 05

Just not the way their faces look as well, cause they're both very beautiful human beings, but just, there's so many ways to deliver a line.

• 33:28Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 33:28Speaker 05

That's the beauty of acting, you can never complete it or learn it enough, you know, we've all got our instincts and we say a line differently, but there's just some people that are way, you know, just musically, the way they say a word. And it's like, wow, so I, you you never thought you'd rise to, I mean, this was two thousand maybe, so it's twenty five years ago, you know, and it's like, I mean, they're rise and and they're brilliant people, by the way. And I'm quite sure, and quite people that stay at the public, which I really respect, something I probably should have done myself, really, you declare too much about who you are as a human being. You know, I think it comes back to haunt you slightly as an actor because your toolbox is you. So if you're clever and don't give away nothing and don't do too many interviews, then you're like Marlon Brando. If like me, I give away a lot, then they go, oh, he only plays himself, which again, I've got no issue with, cause no one can play me better than me.

• 34:12Speaker 04

That's clever. Do you do theatre now?

• 34:16Jessie Ware?

You just, you did the Pinter.

• 34:17Speaker 05

My last play was twenty nineteen, and just before Covid with Martin Freeman, we did the Dum Weta. We closed the Pinter season and I was actually in Woolford at the time, in Albert Square.

• 34:26Jessie Ware?

Wow, that must have been quite a lot, doing both.

• 34:28Speaker 05

It was the start of me thinking I need to leave the soap, because I came out. And I always liked to feel close to Harold, because he was, he's on my phone, he's my screensaver.

• 34:36Jessie Ware?

  Is he still your screensaver?

• 34:37Speaker 05

Oh, he's my high power. There's no two ways about it, you know, this man was very special to me and then he took me under his wing and I think he really wanted me to be a theatre animal. You know what I mean? He felt like he discovered me. I've been acting for ten years and he used to tell people that I've discovered this young actor, you know what I mean? I've been around for a while.

• 34:50Jessie Ware?

  How did he discover you?

• 34:52Speaker 05

Well, I was auditioning for a play called Celebration and my agent was really excited and going, oh my god, you know, Harold Pinter's directing again for the first time in sort of fifth. I said, who's Harold Pinter? I didn't know who he was. I didn't study.

• 35:03Jessie Ware?

Was this the one that you did with Keith Allen?

• 35:05Speaker 05

That's the one I did with Keith Allen. Lindsey Duncan, Liam Williams, really. I remember reading it going, well, I've never fucking read nothing like this. This is like so conversational. It's just what, that was the thing about his dialogue. It was so, I've never, it, it, it, the conversation, what is it? It's like a, it's a, it's not a battle between two people, but it's a game of tennis, isn't it?

• 35:22Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 35:22Speaker 05

And there's an art to it.

• 35:23Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 35:24Speaker 05

And depending what the conversation's about, it is like bang, bang, bang, bang. And so he, I always found it fascinating that he wrote, he wrote what a lot. And in a script, you just don't see it, because you don't have to. But you know, sometimes when you go what? And he had a lot of whats. He hated the pause thing, by the way. He's known for pausing. And, you know, there, he, he, it was, it was meant to write beat, a beat. So then people pause and go, oh, the Pinter pauses. He hated that. He thought that was a load of bollocks. I watched Tom Hiddleston in Betrayal. And he did a two and a half minute pause. And Pinter would have been turning in his fucking grave.

• 35:59Speaker 04

  Would he?

• 36:00Speaker 05

  Well, well, yeah, because.

• 36:01Speaker 04

  Just couldn't cope?

• 36:02Speaker 05

No one pauses for two and a half minutes. He got asked a question on the stage, and you know what his reply was, weirdly? It was what?

• 36:10Speaker 05

I think it's when she declares she's having an affair.

• 36:13Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 36:13Speaker 05

And then he waits for two, and I thought he's gonna fucking speak in a minute surely. As he, and then I thought, oh, maybe he's look, maybe he's forgot his lines, maybe he's dried. And then he just went, what, after two and a half minutes?

• 36:22Speaker 04

See, Jesse's not good with pauses, you couldn't do it, Johnny.

• 36:24Jessie Ware?

I love that you're, neither are you, what?

• 36:27Speaker 04

Bit better than you. Have you done Shakespeare ever?

• 36:30Speaker 05

  No, I don't fancy it. I, I, I, no, I don't, I don't fancy it, I know that I've, I've met actors that said I'd be great in Shakespeare, but.

• 36:36Speaker 04

But I think I'd love to see you in Shakespeare.

• 36:38Speaker 05

No, I know, it would do say that to me, I, I.

• 36:40Speaker 04

I just love your interpretation of it.

• 36:42Jessie Ware?

But don't you wanna, are you not in the?

• 36:44Speaker 05

Maybe, maybe as I'm getting older.

• 36:45Jessie Ware?

  Do you wanna test yourself?

• 36:46Speaker 05

Mate, oh, absolutely, so I'm at the realms now of my age where I do wanna test myself and do different stuff, it's getting the opportunities to do it, so. That's definitely, you get your most creative, the, the further you go into the water. And, you know, for most of my career, probably gone up to about here, now and again, you chuck your nut under and see what happens. And that would be me chucking my nut under, without a snuggle.

• 37:06Jessie Ware?

  And it terrifies you?

• 37:07Speaker 05

Course it does, but then that's when you get most creative.

• 37:09Jessie Ware?

  So maybe some, some hilarity.

• 37:11Speaker 04

Danny, I think you've got to do it.

• 37:12Speaker 05

It's about someone giving you the opportunity, no one's asked me.

• 37:14Speaker 04

  You've got to.

• 37:14Jessie Ware?

  No one's asked you?

• 37:15Speaker 05

No one's ever asked me, so I don't go around.

• 37:16Speaker 04

  Well, I think they're mad.

• 37:17Speaker 05

Well, we'll see, listen, like I said, you know, I'm sort of nearly forty eight, let's see, maybe this is my Shakespeare era. When I push, when I push a bullseye, which is fifty.

• 37:25Jessie Ware?

I'm now gonna put on the pasta because.

• 37:27Speaker 05

  Whack the pasta on.

• 37:28Jessie Ware?

Now will you start asking please the last supper?

• 37:31Speaker 04

Okay, so, do you like, you like a roast?

• 37:35Speaker 05

  Love a roast.

• 37:36Speaker 04

Me too, which is your roast of choice?

• 37:38Speaker 05

Well, the classic is obviously beef, isn't it?

• 37:40Speaker 04

  Yeah, I love beef.

• 37:42Speaker 05

So, I've, I'm now quite good at cooking beef, do you know what I mean, you gotta, gotta let that thing rest.

• 37:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 37:47Speaker 05

And wrap it up in a bit of foil, just let it sit there, do you know what I mean?

• 37:49Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 37:50Speaker 05

So beef would be my favourite, but I like, I, I, I love, see, I, I'm the only one that eats lamb in my house.

• 37:54Speaker 04

  I love lamb.

• 37:56Speaker 05

Some, some people got issues around lamb, innit?

• 37:57Speaker 04

  Why?

• 37:58Speaker 05

  I don't know why.

• 37:58Speaker 04

  Cause it smells lamy.

• 37:59Speaker 05

So I can get a leg of lamb and then I know I'm eating it to myself and then I'll just buy a chicken. To, for, for the others, and I, and I, and I, I can smash a whole leg of lamb to myself.

• 38:07Speaker 04

  Does your boy eat chicken?

• 38:09Speaker 05

Eats chicken, but he only likes the drumsticks. Which is a result for me again, cause I get all the best parts of the chicken, and he loves, yeah, so he, he, he likes chicken. Doesn't like lamb, doesn't really eat beef. When you go to McDonald's, which is probably swearing in here.

• 38:23Speaker 04

  No, it isn't.

• 38:24Speaker 05

Good, good. Well, he has to have a plain burger. He's one of them that won't have no sauce on it, no pickles on it. I go, what is the point of that?

• 38:30Speaker 04

  Or take the lettuce out.

• 38:31Speaker 05

Oh, there's nothing. So it's just two baps with a bit, with a bit of patty in it. You know, what, what is, what's the matter with you?

• 38:36Speaker 04

What do you have at McDonald's when you go?

• 38:38Speaker 05

Well, I like to have a, um, a, a large big McMill with a burger starter.

• 38:43Speaker 04

  Burger starter?

• 38:45Speaker 05

Yeah, it's disgusting. But I, I feel like I need a starter and I think a burger on its jack is just something about it, you know, I like.

• 38:51Speaker 04

  So you start with one.

• 38:52Speaker 05

Very simple burger, that, and I don't get away with it. Think of the burgers you can buy now.

• 38:56Speaker 04

  I know, I.

• 38:56Speaker 05

There's just nothing about it, but it still smells like the eighties and that's why I like it.

• 39:00Speaker 04

Wimpy's we were talking about the other night. They were great. The smell in there was.

• 39:04Speaker 05

You've got a knife and fork in a wimpy?

• 39:05Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 39:06Speaker 05

  And a plate?

• 39:06Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 39:07Speaker 05

Wimpy's are hanging on for dear life now, you know, why the fuck is that?

• 39:10Speaker 04

Throw a wimpy down where you live?

• 39:11Speaker 05

There's one near, there's one near me, but it's fucked, it's battered.

• 39:13Jessie Ware?

When was the last time you went?

• 39:15Speaker 05

I get the delivery from it.

• 39:16Jessie Ware?

  Oh, wow, right.

• 39:17Speaker 05

Yeah, I've not gone in there. I should go in there, really. Just try and support.

• 39:21Speaker 04

So tell me your last supper. You can have a starter, main course and a pudding.

• 39:25Jessie Ware?

  And a drink.

• 39:26Speaker 04

And a drink of choice. What would you, do, do you like spirits?

• 39:31Speaker 05

Yeah, I do like, I do like spirits, yeah. Don't mind a bit of vodka. I do like whisky.

• 39:35Speaker 04

  You like whisky? What sort?

• 39:37Speaker 05

I like a Maker's Mark, which is just sort of a cheapest type of whisky, I think.

• 39:40Speaker 04

Know that. Do you know it?

• 39:43Speaker 05

I like it because they wax the lid on. I'm a very simple man. Things like that excite me for some reason.

• 39:48Speaker 04

  Exciting.

• 39:49Speaker 05

It is the royal in me.

• 39:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 39:51Speaker 05

It's like, instead of an autograph, I should stamp with a bit of wax on it.

• 39:54Speaker 04

  Seal, isn't it? Yeah.

• 39:55Speaker 05

So I like a bit of that. What would I have as a starter? Um, probably a scallop or something. I like a scallop.

• 40:02Speaker 04

  Oh, me too.

• 40:03Speaker 05

With a bit of black pudding on it and all, you know, it makes me feel posh for some reason.

• 40:07Speaker 04

Scallop and black pudding, delicious, yeah.

• 40:09Speaker 05

Feel posh when I'm eating that sort of stuff. I do like seafood. Brought up on sort of eels and stuff and whelks and, you know, all this stuff that looks disgusting.

• 40:17Speaker 04

  Jelly deals, yeah.

• 40:18Speaker 05

Yeah, my old man on a Sunday when he was about, he used to bring home seafood and that. He would sit there and it'd be a right treat to have some cockles.

• 40:25Speaker 04

Yeah, and pick them up, yeah. Do you go to pie and mash? Is there still a pie and mash?

• 40:29Speaker 05

So that would be my starter. What would I have for my main? So you've got, I, I'd start on the fish vibe. And probably for me, my other fish and chips.

• 40:39Speaker 04

  Proper fish and chips?

• 40:40Speaker 05

  Love it.

• 40:40Speaker 04

Where's your best fish and chip shop?

• 40:42Speaker 05

Well, a place called Wilson's round the corner from me. Which is, it's always, you have, you have to get delivery because the queue that comes out of this gaff is unbelievable.

• 40:49Speaker 04

  Oh, really?

• 40:50Speaker 05

Yeah, it's a, it's a gaff. You'll know Wilson's, Ams? It's just, it's, and the fish is unreal. So I, I, I love it. And, and now I've got older, a bit of tartar sauce. I'd never had tartar sauce back in the day.

• 41:01Speaker 04

  Bet you wouldn't.

• 41:02Speaker 05

Now I like to dip me old fish.

• 41:04Speaker 04

Yeah, and do you have vinegar on your?

• 41:06Speaker 05

  Vinegar, gotcha. Onion vinegar preferably.

• 41:08Speaker 04

Onion vinegar? I've never heard of that.

• 41:10Speaker 05

  What?

• 41:11Speaker 04

No. Jessie, do you know onion vinegar?

• 41:14Speaker 05

  Onion vinegar? What?

• 41:14Speaker 04

  No.

• 41:15Speaker 05

In a fish and chip shop? What, like pickled onion? No.

• 41:19Speaker 04

  No.

• 41:19Speaker 05

Well, no, you get a choice of normal vinegar or onion. What?

• 41:22Speaker 04

Maybe they're, they're using the vinegar from the pickled onion.

• 41:27Speaker 05

  Maybe, it's white.

• 41:27Speaker 04

May, oh no, I've never had that.

• 41:30Speaker 05

  I like white pepper.

• 41:31Speaker 04

  White pepper?

• 41:32Speaker 05

  I do.

• 41:33Speaker 04

Yeah, me too a bit, yeah.

• 41:34Speaker 05

Sort of cracking that over your fish and chips.

• 41:36Speaker 04

Too much, yeah. No, no, no, no. Are the chips good there?

• 41:39Speaker 05

Yeah, they're so lovely. Something about that chip, isn't it? That chip shop chip, just the crunch of it.

• 41:44Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 41:45Speaker 05

Some of them are longer than others.

• 41:46Speaker 04

And does it come in paper or little?

• 41:48Speaker 05

Can do, yeah. It comes in paper within a polystyrene thing. Or not polystyrene, but not polystyrene, other thing.

• 41:53Speaker 04

  Cardboard stuff.

• 41:53Speaker 05

The one that's safe for the planet. Nothing's safe for the planet now, is it?

• 41:56Speaker 04

  No, nothing really.

• 41:56Speaker 05

  So, so that would be.

• 41:58Speaker 04

How often, how many times a week do you have that?

• 42:00Speaker 05

Um, not as much as I'd like.

• 42:03Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 42:04Speaker 05

Yeah. So on a Chi, so on a Friday we have a Chinese, because my daughter loves a Chinese and she always has the same thing, which is egg fried rice, she has chips, curry sauce. She has prawn crackers on the top of it and she gets them little pancakes that you wrap the, wrap the duck in.

• 42:16Speaker 04

  Oh, I love those.

• 42:17Speaker 05

  Duck in it.

• 42:18Speaker 04

  Oh, okay.

• 42:19Speaker 05

So she puts like a special fried rice with curry sauce. She loves her Chinese, my little son, so, so I, I think Friday should be a, a fish and chips night.

• 42:27Speaker 04

  Fish and chips, yeah.

• 42:28Speaker 05

Sometimes I can manipulate her and so that I do get what I want.

• 42:30Speaker 04

Which fish? Cod, place, had a?

• 42:33Speaker 05

  I'd go cod.

• 42:34Speaker 04

  Cod, me too.

• 42:34Speaker 05

  Yeah, go classic.

• 42:35Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:36Speaker 05

Uh, large as well. Always got to be large for me.

• 42:38Speaker 04

  That big, yeah, okay.

• 42:40Speaker 05

Big old lump. You look at it and go, am I gonna get through it? But I always do.

• 42:43Speaker 04

  But good batter?

• 42:44Speaker 05

  Good batter, quite thin.

• 42:45Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:46Speaker 05

You know, you know when you can sort of snap it and it comes off lovely?

• 42:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:49Speaker 05

You just put your bit of tartar, put some peas on it.

• 42:52Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:52Speaker 05

And then munch it down lovely.

• 42:53Speaker 04

  Gorgeous.

• 42:54Speaker 05

Thing is like, sometimes I might add a savaloi. Which sort of undermines the goodness of the fish. I mean, what is a savaloy?

• 43:01Speaker 04

It's probably things that you can't even think about.

• 43:04Speaker 05

  Exactly.

• 43:04Speaker 04

Donkey in there. And it's quite pink.

• 43:07Speaker 05

  What's the casing on it?

• 43:08Speaker 04

  I don't know. I don't even want to know.

• 43:10Speaker 05

  Yeah, it's like, it's like a, like a dog's winkle.

• 43:12Speaker 04

Yeah, it is like a dog's winkle.

• 43:14Speaker 05

I'm sorry if I've brought the tone down, but it, but it is, you've got to say it as it is. It's almost like wrapped in some sort of balloon material. It's really odd. But, but again, it reminds me of being a kid and stuff, so, so yeah, a bit of savaloy, um, fish and chips. Now dessert?

• 43:29Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 43:30Speaker 05

Not really dessert, man, thank you so much. I do love a profiterole though.

• 43:34Speaker 04

Oh, profiterole. Oh, I could have made that. You see, should have said.

• 43:37Speaker 05

Yeah, I would, I, I went, I, you know, when you go to a really posh cafe?

• 43:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 43:41Speaker 05

They're sort of making them in front of you and stuff.

• 43:42Speaker 04

  I love it. Yeah.

• 43:44Speaker 05

It's like, how many, what's, how many are you meant to eat? How many profi-, you know, when you buy the posh ones at Marks's or there's other supermarkets?

• 43:49Speaker 04

You usually have three. I have about three.

• 43:51Speaker 05

Oh no, I can't go with three and only.

• 43:53Speaker 04

  How many?

• 43:53Speaker 05

Well, I'd like to smash through the whole thing if possible.

• 43:55Speaker 04

So you'd have the whole kind of twelve?

• 43:57Speaker 05

Well, it's sort of, some of them when they're packaged like a pyramid, aren't they?

• 43:59Speaker 04

  Like, like that.

• 44:00Speaker 05

So you start with one on the top.

• 44:01Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 44:02Speaker 05

And you go, well, there's a couple more.

• 44:03Speaker 04

And you like the chocolate sauce, not the caramel or coffee?

• 44:06Speaker 05

Well, sometimes you get the sort of millionaire one, which has got all sorts going on in it.

• 44:09Speaker 04

  There's a millionaire.

• 44:10Speaker 05

  There's caramel, there's all sorts.

• 44:11Speaker 04

  I didn't even know that.

• 44:11Speaker 05

Oh, there's grated chocolate, yeah. And you just lay there, bang, in trouble.

• 44:16Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 44:16Speaker 05

And I could just feel my breasts growing.

• 44:18Speaker 04

But you're very slim. I can't believe that you eat that a lot.

• 44:20Speaker 05

You're very, very kind. Well, you saw in the film, I get me top off quite a lot.

• 44:23Speaker 04

  Yeah, I know.

• 44:24Speaker 05

So, yeah, I don't think you could call me slight.

• 44:26Speaker 04

  You're not slight.

• 44:27Speaker 05

It's about embracing the, the dead, the granddad bod that I've got.

• 44:30Speaker 04

  But I think you're a fine man.

• 44:32Speaker 05

Thank you very much. You're very kind.

• 44:33Speaker 04

  But you're young. You're forty-eight.

• 44:35Speaker 05

  Yeah, semi-young.

• 45:47Jessie Ware?

So it's sausage and fennel seed, papadelli.

• 45:52Speaker 05

  Papadelli, the posh one.

• 45:54Jessie Ware?

  If you want some parmesan.

• 45:55Speaker 04

  What's that little tattoo there?

• 45:58Speaker 05

Oh, these are tattoos of my kids' names. So I went to Thailand. And that was only when I had Danny, that says Danny.

• 46:02Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 46:03Speaker 05

And I did that, I did that in bamboo. Don't do it.

• 46:06Jessie Ware?

  Oh, my God.

• 46:07Speaker 05

Because it's them just jabbing you a hundred mile an hour. So anyway, so this is when I went, I did a documentary after the tsunami. And it was about, it was for MTV and it was about trying to get people back to Thailand.

• 46:19Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 46:20Speaker 05

Because it was horrendous what happened. So I thought I'd get a bit deep out there. And also we ran out of things to film. So I said, I know, you know, I'll get a tattoo anyway.

• 46:27Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 46:28Speaker 05

Not thinking I'd have any more kids.

• 46:29Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 46:30Speaker 05

So anyway, I had that one. And I thought if I ever go, and I had two more children. So if I ever go back to Thailand, I must get their names. And I did go back to Thailand.

• 46:35Jessie Ware?

  Hmm.

• 46:35Speaker 05

I did do the bamboo. So that's Danny.

• 46:38Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 46:38Speaker 05

  That's Sonny.

• 46:39Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 46:39Speaker 05

And that's Artie. That's little man. That one hurt the most because it's on a bone.

• 46:43Jessie Ware?

  Is he Arthur?

• 46:44Speaker 05

  No, just Artie. A R T Y.

• 46:47Jessie Ware?

  Is his middle name Harold?

• 46:50Speaker 05

No, they didn't got a middle name actually, Artie. We didn't go for a middle name with him.

• 46:54Jessie Ware?

I, um, I know that you spoke about it a little bit with our lovely, um, charity donate, I don't know what to call you, not competition winners, like it's like.

• 47:02Speaker 05

In a way, they, no, no.

• 47:03Jessie Ware?

  I don't know.

• 47:04Speaker 04

  Generous people.

• 47:05Jessie Ware?

  Mad spenders, yeah.

• 47:06Speaker 05

  You don't look like competition.

• 47:08Jessie Ware?

  Big spenders.

• 47:09Speaker 05

Just saying about you, you're a peria.

• 47:10Jessie Ware?

But, but, um, but you were talking about rivals, which I really loved.

• 47:15Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 47:15Jessie Ware?

Freddie, I've never wanted somebody to commit adultery as much as Freddie, I know, it's like.

• 47:21Speaker 05

  It's really clever, isn't it?

• 47:21Jessie Ware?

  You really managed to.

• 47:22Speaker 05

No, but it's really clever. I mean, I wish I could claim it all, you know, they, they gave me a wonderful part. And it was quite an easy part in the sense of I wasn't in it that much, but when I was in it, I had really lovely scenes. I had no big monologues. The tough bit was learning Japanese, that was difficult. Um, but you know what? I think that you, you, you put so many vulgar people in it. And there was a lot of vulgar people in it, a bit like Succession, you can't even watch them. That when you put people in it that are really quite kind and gentle and lovely and have good morals, you're really rooting for them. And then if you put them in awful marriages, because they're both in awful marriages. And they're trying to do the right thing, you know, it's, but they're so drawn to each other. It was really clever strand of storytelling. And in the books, they're hardly in it, Freddie and Lizzie.

• 48:05Jessie Ware?

Oh, really? Did you read the books?

• 48:07Speaker 05

No, they're really not. They're hardly in it. And especially after what we've done, that you, you just sort of look away. You never really hear about them again, really. So, um.

• 48:17Jessie Ware?

But there's gonna be a season two.

• 48:18Speaker 05

  Yeah, we'll start doing it.

• 48:20Jessie Ware?

It was a cliffhanger, wasn't it?

• 48:21Speaker 05

It really was, but I haven't read anything yet.

• 48:22Jessie Ware?

David Tennant obviously wanted to get out, no?

• 48:25Speaker 05

  Rolls Royce.

• 48:26Jessie Ware?

  With the old.

• 48:27Speaker 05

Well, I don't wanna give it away.

• 48:28Jessie Ware?

No. Don't tell me that he fucking survives that.

• 48:31Speaker 05

Again, I just can't declare stuff like that, but can, but can you kill David Tennant?

• 48:35Speaker 04

  No.

• 48:39Speaker 04

If they did, they'd bring him back to life.

• 48:40Speaker 05

He's an amazing human being, by the way.

• 48:42Speaker 04

But he was so good on The Baftas.

• 48:45Speaker 05

Oh, he's just, he's just a beautiful. He's very funny, isn't he? One of those rare people that have got really high profile and just, and just brilliant. Everything he does is brilliant, really kind and giving and.

• 48:53Jessie Ware?

  So talented.

• 48:54Speaker 05

And just on it as well, like he was like a Rolls Royce, this geezer. Just didn't drop a line ever. He was so prepped. And that character he plays is awful, Lord Banningham.

• 49:02Jessie Ware?

  Tony Banningham, yeah.

• 49:03Speaker 05

You hate him. I don't think anyone's ever hated David Tennant, even when he played the serial killer, I think it was Dez, was it? You know, it wasn't as bad as Lord Banningham.

• 49:12Jessie Ware?

I have to say, I hope there's a bit more sex in the next season. Jessica.

• 49:16Speaker 05

  Oh really?

• 49:17Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I didn't think there was enough. It was a bit Adam and Eve, your bit.

• 49:20Speaker 05

Well, we only, we got away with it, me and Catherine actually.

• 49:23Jessie Ware?

  Are you kind of like...

• 49:24Speaker 05

Because one of us was at it and then we, and then our one builds up to the end and then our one was quite intimate and. Well, mind you, I do go down on her and I pour champagne on her beer.

• 49:30Jessie Ware?

Yes, you did. Yeah, you did.

• 49:32Speaker 05

  Which was, um...

• 49:33Jessie Ware?

  But it was quite romantic.

• 49:34Speaker 05

I thought it was and it was almost like you almost, you really want these two to just be, get animalistic.

• 49:39Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 49:39Speaker 05

And they tried in their little timid sort of shy ways, you know what I mean? So it was all quite childlike in a sense of they didn't quite know how to do it. They'd never had an affair before.

• 49:47Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 49:47Speaker 05

And that's what was cute and lovely about it. So, um, I, I, again, I've not read them. Um, I'm assuming there's gonna be more, but I, I was happy. We, we used every intimacy coordinator in the country for that job.

• 50:00Jessie Ware?

It was really, um, no, I, I, look, I just want a bit more sex, to be honest.

• 50:05Speaker 05

  And I, I, I love that, baby.

• 50:06Jessie Ware?

I mean, Bridgerton was like, like hardcore compared to that.

• 50:10Speaker 05

Which is surprising because it's Jilly Cooper and everyone was sort of hoping.

• 50:12Jessie Ware?

  I know.

• 50:13Speaker 05

Yeah, it's Disney, isn't it? See, it's the other thing.

• 50:14Jessie Ware?

Oh, but how weird to then take a Jilly Cooper thing.

• 50:17Speaker 05

Yeah, but yeah, but it's hard to, you know, but you can get dark, Disney can be quite dark if they want and it was. I suppose we did it in a way where it wasn't uncomfortable. So all of the sex that's in, it's quite, so there's music going on or it's not. Because when it's too much, it can be a bit like, oh.

• 50:32Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 50:32Speaker 05

The end of the first episode, we were all shooting our bolt, pardon my, you know, that whole sort of orgasm sort of climaxing sort of. You know, that's the only bit I do in the first bit, which was great, because I still got paid for having a pedal, as we like to call it.

• 50:47Jessie Ware?

So what's this, why is the summer so busy? Apart from the wedding, that's one day, as you say. What are you filming? You're filming Rivals?

• 50:52Speaker 05

And I've just invested in a caravan site.

• 50:54Jessie Ware?

  I wanna talk about this.

• 50:56Speaker 05

So nostalgia is important for me.

• 50:58Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 50:59Speaker 05

Now, I was, every holiday I used to go to Camby Island.

• 51:02Jessie Ware?

  It's Campy Island.

• 51:03Speaker 05

It's Campy Island, it's a place, it's like an little island off the edge.

• 51:05Jessie Ware?

Is it like Osea Island? Oh, is it?

• 51:08Speaker 05

I mean, I say it's an island, but it's a ditch that you sort of step over and then you're on it, right? But we used to go to a place called Fawny Bay Beach Camp. And it was like, mum, nan, cousins, everybody was there, all the family again, going, talking about family being together. No phones, laptops, since the eighties. And we all used to hook up for a week, walk along the sea wall, do a bit of crabbing, go to the arcades, have candy floss, have a toffee apple. Play arcades. And it was just about just watching my mum and nan and my sisters just laughing. And my mum and nan used to laugh until they used to piss themselves. I know this might be a weird thing.

• 51:40Jessie Ware?

  No, no, no.

• 51:40Speaker 05

  My nan did that.

• 51:41Jessie Ware?

  That's a good laugh.

• 51:42Speaker 05

So they would just all squat together and piss laughing with with usually a big super king hanging out of their mouth, right? So this for me was a holiday for me. I think we're, till I got older, I realised how tight. They were because actually it was half hour down the road and actually, but I used to think it was like Disney World anyway. So I I wanna bring the caravan holiday back. Now, I I've invested money in it now.

• 52:01Jessie Ware?

  Well, in a caravan site?

• 52:02Speaker 05

  It's in Leystown.

• 52:03Jessie Ware?

  Where's that?

• 52:04Speaker 04

  Leystown is where.

• 52:05Speaker 05

  Kent.

• 52:06Jessie Ware?

Well, that's very good for me, Danny. You need me to go and try it?

• 52:09Speaker 05

Static ones, they're all, they're, it's a very, it's got some charm about it, um, but it does need a little lick of paint.

• 52:14Speaker 04

  Are they chalets or?

• 52:16Speaker 05

They do chalets on there as well.

• 52:17Speaker 04

  Yeah, I think.

• 52:18Speaker 05

So there are chalets and there are static caravans, but it's, everything's so expensive. So, you know, caravan holidays weren't to be cheap, but then people, it's cheaper to go abroad now and go to fucking Magaluf or, you know. And also youngsters of a certain age, I think when they don't think it's cool, I'm gonna try and make it cool again, but we need a summer for it to work.

• 52:35Jessie Ware?

What have you got? It's like, have you got a swimming pool there?

• 52:37Speaker 05

There's a swimming pool there, there's a lovely clubhouse there, we've got an arcade.

• 52:40Speaker 04

It's the clubhouse that makes it.

• 52:41Jessie Ware?

  I'm coming, book me in.

• 52:43Speaker 05

Listen, if you wanna come down.

• 52:44Speaker 04

  Yeah, I'm coming, I'm coming.

• 52:46Speaker 05

And I'll get you a lovely little plot there, right? Now, I I I, because of Clarkson's Farm, which has done very well for Amazon. I'm obviously making a television show about it.

• 52:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 52:56Speaker 05

  Sky have flown into me.

• 52:57Speaker 04

  Good.

• 52:58Speaker 05

I feel like they might want it to be a fucking disaster.

• 53:00Speaker 04

  No, no, no.

• 53:01Speaker 05

I've got good telly, I understand.

• 53:03Speaker 04

  Oh, I see.

• 53:03Speaker 05

It's my real money, and so I I I don't really know how to run a business. I've never done it. Me and my Danny, she's getting involved as well because I need her brains. We're two Danny Dires trying to make our way in the world and she's. You know, she's a sort of maybe a a a smarter, more um better at running a business. She wants a big soft play area. She wants to.

• 53:19Speaker 04

  Yes, yeah.

• 53:20Jessie Ware?

  Lucky Danny.

• 53:21Speaker 05

So, you know, we're trying to bring it back and I want to roll in. I've got some nephews uh is out of work. He can come and do some handyman work. I've got a niece who uh uh is a qualified nanny, can't get no work, so she can run a kids' club.

• 53:32Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 53:33Speaker 05

Bring family in and go, this is a family affair.

• 53:35Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 53:35Jessie Ware?

What about evening entertainment? What are you?

• 53:37Speaker 05

Well, you know, I'm gonna make some calls to some people. I might do an eighties sort of night, get some of the rivals up down there, do you know what I mean? Why not? You know, um.

• 53:45Speaker 04

  Karaoke?

• 53:45Speaker 05

Try a bit, well, a bit of karaoke.

• 53:47Speaker 04

  I love that.

• 53:48Speaker 05

I've got, what I will say is that the older generation, the Blue Rinse lot.

• 53:52Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 53:52Speaker 05

They love their bingo. Can't fuck with a bingo.

• 53:54Speaker 04

  Kidding.

• 53:55Speaker 05

You don't fuck with a bingo because they will iron me out.

• 53:58Speaker 04

Do they have bingo now already?

• 53:59Speaker 05

Yeah, no, bingo's a massive night for them. I think we need to change the prizes.

• 54:04Jessie Ware?

  What are the prizes?

• 54:05Speaker 05

You know, like there was a gala bingo years ago, you could win a quarter of a mil.

• 54:08Speaker 04

  Oh, really?

• 54:09Speaker 05

Life-changing money for it. So I'm thinking, I I you know, I wanna, you know, I'm not necessarily old girls, but. Uh maybe money, but I'm just trying, I need to rack my brains about what would be a good price for them. Like, I want it to, I want it, I want there to be something that's steak.

• 54:21Speaker 04

  So you've got.

• 54:22Jessie Ware?

  A sex scene with Rupert.

• 54:23Speaker 05

  A sex scene.

• 54:25Speaker 04

No, all Freddie. Sorry, Danny, sorry.

• 54:27Speaker 05

  No, no, Freddie loves Lizzy.

• 54:28Speaker 04

  Jessie.

• 54:29Speaker 05

Freddie doesn't have rollerbacks with anybody, but he's Lizzy.

• 54:33Speaker 04

Jessie, you have that. Do you want that bit?

• 54:35Jessie Ware?

That's huge for me, thank you.

• 54:37Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 54:37Speaker 05

  Babe, give that to me.

• 54:38Speaker 04

Hoden, what about this crusty bit? Because it doesn't look very.

• 54:40Jessie Ware?

I don't think Danny minds that it's fallen off.

• 54:42Speaker 04

  All right, darling.

• 54:43Speaker 05

Beggars and all that. Thank you so much.

• 54:45Jessie Ware?

Danny, before you tuck into your Bakewell, can I ask you what is a very nostalgic taste that can transport you back somewhere?

• 54:55Jessie Ware?

  Happy or sad?

• 54:56Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 54:58Speaker 05

I think a crab stick reminds me of my youth for some reason, and I used to dip it into Mary Rose sauce. And I still do that now. Although it's not crab, is it?

• 55:06Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 55:07Speaker 05

The fuck is it? No one knows.

• 55:08Jessie Ware?

  We don't, we don't know.

• 55:10Speaker 05

No one dares to do a little, you know, investigate what the fuck is in that pink and white thing.

• 55:16Jessie Ware?

  Do you still eat them?

• 55:17Speaker 05

I do, yeah, I love them.

• 55:18Jessie Ware?

Now, what is something that we would find in your fridge if we were opening up that's always there?

• 55:24Speaker 05

Always have eggs. And obviously butter, very important. The posh one, Lurpak.

• 55:30Jessie Ware?

  Love Lurpak.

• 55:31Speaker 05

  So expensive.

• 55:33Jessie Ware?

  It is expensive, yeah.

• 55:35Speaker 04

What, for the big, the tub?

• 55:37Speaker 05

Oh yeah, you're gonna get, yeah, you're gonna go, you've got to get, you know, it runs out quick in my garden.

• 55:40Jessie Ware?

  Hmm.

• 55:41Speaker 05

Butter, anything naughty. Got to have milk in the fridge. I do like me wafer thin ham.

• 55:47Jessie Ware?

Honey roasted, or are you just going?

• 55:49Speaker 05

You know, I like to roll them up into sort of like, like from the eighties, I would roll them up and I would dip them in salad cream.

• 55:54Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 55:55Jessie Ware?

  Oh yum.

• 55:55Speaker 05

  Apologies.

• 55:56Jessie Ware?

  This is delicious mum, yummy.

• 55:58Speaker 04

  It's nice, isn't it?

• 55:59Speaker 05

So this is when I would want to watch Columbo.

• 56:03Speaker 05

A whole series, back to back, all day munching on this, dropping in and out of kit. Roaring away to myself, waking myself up by snoring.

• 56:11Jessie Ware?

Do you get to do that with an eleven year old? And, and the Terrible's?

• 56:15Speaker 05

So they just get off, no, no, when the Terrible's around, you're on red alert.

• 56:19Speaker 04

Will there be a sequel to Marching Powder?

• 56:23Speaker 05

If it earns a few quid.

• 56:26Speaker 05

  Let's be honest.

• 56:27Speaker 04

  Lovely wife.

• 56:28Speaker 05

  Um, she's beautiful.

• 56:29Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous.

• 56:30Speaker 05

  Stephanie Leonidas, what an actress.

• 56:31Speaker 04

  She's so beautiful.

• 56:33Speaker 05

It's a very alpha film. You need an alpha film, Al. And also, women shouldn't be victims. You know, I mean, women are strong human beings that hold their own in the world. So we wanted a woman that's not like, oh, we want a woman that's like, you know, well, fuck this. You know, there's a reason why I'm attracted to you, which is your bolicky behaviour, but I also hate you for it. And I do think that's what love is. You know, the things that we fall in love with are also the things we fucking hate about. It's such a minefield, love, and, you know. Especially what us, we've been together, not me and you have been together, obviously, but we've been with our partners for a very long time.

• 57:10Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 57:11Speaker 05

So, you know, we know, I would say that my Joe knows me better than anybody else on this planet. And frightens me as well, keeps me very grounded.

• 57:18Speaker 04

  Good.

• 57:19Speaker 05

You know, um, uh, not really interested in any of my work, didn't really like rivals, uh, which is, which is, which is like, as soon as I walk in my house, my feet are firmly on the fucking ground again.

• 57:27Jessie Ware?

Danny Dyer, thank you so much for coming here and.

• 57:30Speaker 05

Honestly, it's an honour being here. You've got a wonderful relationship.

• 57:32Speaker 04

  You're so sweet.

• 57:33Speaker 05

You two, very, very beautiful, clever women. Thank you, that Baked World tart, fuck me.

• 57:38Speaker 04

  It's gorgeous, it is gorgeous.

• 57:39Jessie Ware?

  It's very good.

• 57:40Speaker 05

I feel like I'm having sex at this point.

• 57:42Speaker 04

Do you? I'm waiting for the orgasm now.

• 57:45Speaker 05

  A bit intimately.

• 57:46Speaker 04

  Okay, thank God.

• 57:47Speaker 05

  There's no rush.

• 57:48Speaker 04

No rush, you take your time.

• 57:48Speaker 05

  Take your fucking time.

• 57:49Speaker 04

You take your fucking time. You take your fucking time with my Baked World, darling.

• 57:56Speaker 05

  Cherish it, relish it.

• 58:11Jessie Ware?

He drunk no water. He drunk three wines and none of his posh fizzy water.

• 58:16Speaker 04

He's well hard, that's why, darling.

• 58:17Jessie Ware?

  I love Danny Dyer.

• 58:19Speaker 04

I thought I wasn't, I thought I was going to be a bit frightened, that he was going to be trickery.

• 58:23Jessie Ware?

No, you, you were not sure that you were going to get on with the Dyer.

• 58:27Speaker 04

But I thought he was lovely.

• 58:28Jessie Ware?

Mum, you were making a new news about Baked World arts with him by the end.

• 58:31Speaker 04

  And sausages.

• 58:32Jessie Ware?

Yeah, no, that was the first entry point, Mum.

• 58:35Speaker 04

  Do you mind?

• 58:37Jessie Ware?

Danny Dyer, what's see, national treasure, you understand that? Lovely, gave everyone a kiss in the room.

• 58:44Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 58:44Jessie Ware?

  Respectfully.

• 58:45Speaker 04

Yeah, it was worth the, um, bidding then, if you got your kiss.

• 58:48Jessie Ware?

This was a good, this was a good one.

• 58:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 58:51Jessie Ware?

Um, but it was really, I loved him. I could have, I could have him for part two, I swear to God.

• 58:56Speaker 04

  Yeah, me too.

• 58:56Jessie Ware?

I'm saying it now, he's coming back on for something else.

• 58:59Speaker 04

We'll go down to that caravan site.

• 59:00Jessie Ware?

I said I'll do a covers night for him.

• 59:02Speaker 04

  Oh, did you?

• 59:03Jessie Ware?

I said, just if you need me to do a covers night, I'll do it.

• 59:06Speaker 04

  And get the, um.

• 59:07Jessie Ware?

You said, I'll get you a nice plot. Um, Danny Dyer on Table manners there and Marching Powder is out now.

• 59:14Speaker 04

  Yeah. Brace yourselves.

• 59:18Speaker 04

I just told him the opening line and she said, now I understand why we're bit.

• 59:24Jessie Ware?

Um, he's just brilliant and I wanna see him on this day.

• 59:27Speaker 04

Interestingly, you swore less today than I've ever heard you swear.

• 59:30Jessie Ware?

I think probably it was cuz there was somebody else swearing more.

• 59:33Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's probably why.

• 59:35Jessie Ware?

Thank you so much for listening and, um, and we'll see you next week.

• 59:39Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 59:40Jessie Ware?

And also mum, your baked world tart was stunning.

• 59:42Speaker 04

  And your pasta was stunning.

• 59:43Jessie Ware?

Thanks mum, we make a good team, don't we?

• 59:45Speaker 04

  Yeah, very good team.

• 59:46Jessie Ware?

Um, I'm telling you, why have we not done pasta ever on the podcast? It was all delicious.

• 59:50Speaker 04

  Good.

• 59:51Jessie Ware?

Right, we'll see you next week.
