Marcus Mumford

On this week's episode we welcome musician and songwriter, Marcus Mumford! We chatted to Marcus in the lead up to brand new Mumford & Sons music and what sounds like an incredible 2026 for the band. Over steak tagliata, we talked about performing at Glastonbury, living in Devon, surfing in Malibu, the church his parents set up, his beloved Wimbledon AFC, and we hear all about Taylor Swift using his studio in Devon to finish her album. Thank you Marcus for travelling across the country to join us for dinner, wishing you all the best ❤️ Mumford & Sons’ new album ‘Prizefighter’ is out February 13th, and features collaborations with Gracie Abrams, Chris Stapleton & Hozier. Hello and welcome to Table Manners. I'm Jessie Wern and I'm here with my mum, Lenny.

• 0:40Speaker 02

  Who needs dentures? No way.

• 0:42Jessie Ware?

  What happened last night?

• 0:44Speaker 02

A double crown fell out and I promise you, all your inheritance is going in my mouth, darling.

• 0:51Speaker 02

That's all I can tell you.

• 0:52Jessie Ware?

Mum, I'm just saying, the front one came out like two weeks ago and now two are coming. Just get some false teeth. No?

• 0:59Speaker 02

I have implants, darling. I've got...

• 1:01Jessie Ware?

Well, they're not fucking implanted very well, are they?

• 1:04Speaker 02

These are old ones. This needs renewing. It's fine.

• 1:08Jessie Ware?

  Anyway, how are you, Lenny?

• 1:09Speaker 02

Well, I was fine till I spoke to you. Dentures.

• 1:14Jessie Ware?

So usually we do the intro before the guest comes, but we love a slightly early guest. And the guest today was a little early. So now we're doing the intro after having had a fabulous evening with him. We have Marcus.

• 1:29Speaker 02

Did you? Sorry, did you manifest his early arrival? Because you want to go to bed early.

• 1:35Jessie Ware?

I love it. It's my favourite. We have Marcus Mumford coming on Table Manners tonight and I'm very excited. I'm looking at the camera because now we have cameras. I don't know if I... Am I taking the cameras seriously?

• 1:48Speaker 02

  I thought someone was...

• 1:50Jessie Ware?

No, it's my dodgy eye. No.

• 1:54Speaker 02

One eye out the window, one up the chimney.

• 1:57Jessie Ware?

One on my camera, one on my YouTube.

• 1:59Speaker 02

I don't know where you were.

• 2:00Jessie Ware?

Okay, I'm going to stop doing that. We're still working. It's early days, Lenny. Let me flush it out.

• 2:04Speaker 02

Am I supposed to be looking over there like?

• 2:05Jessie Ware?

  I don't know.

• 2:06Speaker 02

You mean like, like Blue Peter?

• 2:08Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Okay, fine, I'm not going to look at the camera anymore. Um...

• 2:16Jessie Ware?

We have Marcus Mumford on, who is of course from Mumford and Sons.

• 2:20Speaker 02

We never, where did they get their title from?

• 2:23Jessie Ware?

Are you kidding mum? Marcus Mumford?

• 2:25Speaker 02

Of course. But Sons, oh sorry, but Sons.

• 2:29Jessie Ware?

  Are you actually kidding?

• 2:30Speaker 02

  No, but Sons.

• 2:32Jessie Ware?

And Mates, I don't, Marcus Mumford and Mates doesn't work as well.

• 2:35Speaker 02

  Okay, sorry.

• 2:37Speaker 02

  It's not.

• 2:38Jessie Ware?

I'm glad you didn't ask him that.

• 2:39Speaker 02

No, I just, the Sons thing, Jessie, I know the Mumford.

• 2:44Jessie Ware?

Okay, anyway, Marcus Mumford is coming on to talk all things new music. It's the new Mumford and Sons record that's coming out next year. They've already had one out at the beginning of this year. They're prolific.

• 2:57Speaker 02

  Big tour.

• 2:57Jessie Ware?

Big tour that they've already started. And, and we get to chat to him. He's coming all the way from Devon.

• 3:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 3:04Jessie Ware?

  So.

• 3:04Speaker 02

  He likes meat.

• 3:06Jessie Ware?

Apparently, so I'm on food duty today. I have to give a shout out to Rosie, my gorgeous nanny, who has helped with the judging of, and actually going and buying the steaks today. So thank you, Rosie, you're the best. I think she did it because she's a massive Mumford and Sons fan. But I heard from Emma Freud, who has been on our podcast before, who we love, who's really good friends with Marcus. I said, what does he like eating? Can you give me some tips? And she said, he loves a good cut of steak. So I went to Proud South, it's in Crofton Park, it's lovely butchers. And we got four gorgeous sirloin steaks. I'm going to make tagliata, beef tagliata, which is really easy. It's in our cookbook and it's really nice.

• 3:51Jessie Ware?

You just sear it, well, cook it on either side, maybe three to four minutes on either side. And then within that, you take it, let it rest and you put crushed garlic, rosemary, lemon zest and lemon juice. And you just kind of let it sit for a bit. And then serve it with some rocket and you slice it up and it should be just delicious. So I've had my sirloin steaks.

• 4:15Speaker 02

  What's what tagliata mean?

• 4:16Jessie Ware?

What? Oh dessert, okay. And so I've had the steaks coming to room temperature, they've been salted, they've been seasoned and then I'm making this mob kitchen potato salad, which is basically the base of pea, artichoke, Dijon, lemon, and then you juice that all up and then you put on top new potatoes with asparagus, sesame seeds, zatar, rocket, but I didn't put rocket because I had that with the thing. So I put some watercress in there and some feta and mint. So it's just gonna be quite fresh and lovely with this quite rare steak. And then what have you made for Pudd?

• 4:59Speaker 02

I've made a brown sugar and hazelnut pavlova with quince.

• 5:04Jessie Ware?

  Yum. Gorgeous.

• 5:07Speaker 02

Bit of a disaster with the quinces.

• 5:09Jessie Ware?

  What happened?

• 5:09Speaker 02

  I burnt the syrup.

• 5:11Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 5:12Speaker 02

I over bubbled it. So I had to start again.

• 5:15Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 5:16Speaker 02

Have you ever cut a quince up?

• 5:17Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 5:17Speaker 02

It's like cutting a rock up.

• 5:19Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 5:20Speaker 02

Yeah. But it's all right. It's all worked out.

• 5:22Jessie Ware?

  It looks really nice.

• 5:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:24Jessie Ware?

Good. Yeah, Marcus Mumford coming up on Ted and Mads.

• 5:35Jessie Ware?

  Marcus Mumford.

• 5:36Speaker 03

  Hi.

• 5:37Jessie Ware?

Why have you been walking around New Cross for an hour?

• 5:39Speaker 03

Because the Elizabeth Line is unbelievable. It was the first time I've been on it and the Windrush Line as well.

• 5:45Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 5:46Speaker 03

  Absolutely fantastic.

• 5:47Jessie Ware?

That's the first time you've been on either of them?

• 5:48Speaker 03

I haven't been on the Elizabeth Line.

• 5:50Jessie Ware?

  Where have you been, babe?

• 5:50Speaker 03

I've been, I live in Devon.

• 5:52Jessie Ware?

  Oh, fair enough.

• 5:53Speaker 03

So it's been a while and it was unbelievable.

• 5:57Jessie Ware?

I love that. This is like your version of going on like a double decker, open top bus. You went on the Windrush.

• 6:02Speaker 03

I mean, I've always been, I grew up in London, I'm a big fan of the tube, but the Elizabeth Line is a game changer.

• 6:07Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but did it smell when you got to, which is the, which is the stop where it stinks? It smells of damp. Have you not been on it? Anybody in the house? Have you been on it? Do you know? Oh, it's when you go. Yeah, of course I have.

• 6:21Speaker 03

Do you not take the tube?

• 6:22Jessie Ware?

  No. No.

• 6:23Speaker 03

  No, you're too elegant.

• 6:26Speaker 02

  I'm lazy. I'm lazy.

• 6:28Jessie Ware?

Yeah, exactly. Mum thinks that if I play Glastonbury again, she's gonna do the helicopter like Shirley Bassey.

• 6:33Speaker 03

  As you should.

• 6:34Jessie Ware?

Have you ever got a helicopter into?

• 6:36Speaker 03

  No.

• 6:36Jessie Ware?

  Glastonbury?

• 6:37Speaker 03

No. No, because I drive from home. It doesn't take very long.

• 6:40Jessie Ware?

  Oh, yeah.

• 6:41Speaker 03

In fact, we took our youngest when she was. Four weeks, maybe three weeks old.

• 6:48Jessie Ware?

Was this when you, oh, I thought when you were headlining.

• 6:51Speaker 03

  No, no.

• 6:52Jessie Ware?

  She wasn't around then.

• 6:53Speaker 03

No, I, I know I got kicked out of our dressing room then I wasn't allowed back in because I tried to steal the furniture. So I wanted a memento, so I took the sofa, tried to load the sofa into the back of a van.

• 7:03Jessie Ware?

  Hang on a minute.

• 7:04Speaker 03

  They'd had enough.

• 7:04Jessie Ware?

So when, when you headlined Pyramid Stage, what was it, twenty twelve?

• 7:08Speaker 03

  Yeah, something like that.

• 7:10Jessie Ware?

You got, you tried to steal the sofa?

• 7:12Speaker 02

  A, a little memento.

• 7:13Jessie Ware?

  Have you played since?

• 7:15Speaker 03

  Um, no.

• 7:17Speaker 02

  Well, you kissed Emily off.

• 7:18Speaker 03

  I know, I know.

• 7:20Speaker 02

Do you think you really have? No.

• 7:22Speaker 03

Oh, maybe. No, I don't think so. No, I saw Michael when we took, uh, we took our youngest to go see Elton and I saw, um, Michael. He was like, when are you coming back? And I was like, oh, whenever you want.

• 7:32Jessie Ware?

He's like, you can come back when you give me back my sofa.

• 7:34Speaker 03

No, I didn't succeed, but they did kick me out of the dressing room and didn't let me back in.

• 7:37Jessie Ware?

  Oh, my God.

• 7:39Speaker 03

It's just the best festival on earth, though.

• 7:40Jessie Ware?

  It is.

• 7:41Speaker 03

Did your, every other festival is trying to be Glastonbury.

• 7:43Speaker 02

Have you, have you been to Coachella? Do you like Coachella?

• 7:46Speaker 03

  Um, I.

• 7:47Speaker 02

I've never experienced sand like that.

• 7:50Speaker 03

It's too hot. We did Stagecoach last year.

• 7:54Jessie Ware?

Oh, I really wanna go to that.

• 7:55Speaker 03

  Really fun.

• 7:56Jessie Ware?

That's so good that you can do that.

• 7:58Speaker 03

  I like that one.

• 7:59Jessie Ware?

  Versatile, muffin and sun.

• 8:00Speaker 03

In the world are trying to, um, be like Glastonbury. It's the OG. It's the best.

• 8:06Jessie Ware?

It's the best. So let's talk about, well, we're going to talk about Devon in a bit, but let's talk about Wimbledon.

• 8:11Speaker 03

  Udon's.

• 8:12Jessie Ware?

  Um.

• 8:13Speaker 03

  Sorry.

• 8:13Jessie Ware?

  AFC.

• 8:14Speaker 03

  Udon's.

• 8:14Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Do you get to go to, go and see them?

• 8:17Speaker 03

I actually took my daughter to her first ever football game when we got promoted last season at Wembley.

• 8:23Jessie Ware?

  Congratulations.

• 8:23Speaker 03

It was fantastic. And we're doing quite well.

• 8:25Speaker 02

You based in Milton Keynes still?

• 8:27Speaker 03

Absolutely not. No, this is gonna, we're gonna have to clear this up immediately. So Wimbledon were the first ever and only team sold as a franchise to a different city.

• 8:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:36Speaker 03

Different town. And, um, they were sold to Milton Keynes. So that, we don't really like that.

• 8:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:41Speaker 03

  Those words in our house.

• 8:42Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 8:42Speaker 03

Um, so we tend not to play Milton Keynes very much, but, um.

• 8:46Speaker 02

  So where are you based?

• 8:47Speaker 03

So the fans set up their own club, which is called AFC Wimbledon, which is very different to the Milton Keynes team.

• 8:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:54Jessie Ware?

And do you get to still play at South Park?

• 8:56Speaker 03

No, we built a stadium at Plough Lane.

• 8:59Speaker 02

So you're back down Plough Lane again?

• 9:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:02Speaker 02

  I didn't, why didn't I know that?

• 9:04Jessie Ware?

  I don't know.

• 9:05Speaker 02

Because they built all houses there and, and the dogs went.

• 9:09Speaker 03

That's it. They built the stadium on where the dogs were. Did you ever go to the dogs?

• 9:13Jessie Ware?

  I loved the dogs.

• 9:14Speaker 03

  I never went.

• 9:14Jessie Ware?

  And stock car racing.

• 9:16Speaker 03

It's what, I grew up Wimbledon.

• 9:17Speaker 02

  Stock car, do you remember?

• 9:18Speaker 03

My brothers was at, my brother was at school in Battersea and then I went to primary school in Battersea. So we used to drive past Plough Lane every day, always go past the dogs and I never went.

• 9:26Jessie Ware?

Oh my, it was so good. I think it used to go for my birthday.

• 9:28Speaker 03

Is that where Blur shot the cover of Parkour?

• 9:31Jessie Ware?

No, they were Walthamstow. Um, so let's talk about Wimbledon.

• 9:33Speaker 03

But I was in Wimbledon when you were in Clam.

• 9:36Jessie Ware?

Clam, yeah, yeah. And my husband was in St. Reitham, right up the road, yeah.

• 9:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:42Jessie Ware?

And so who was round the dinner table and what were you eating?

• 9:44Speaker 03

Hmm. Round the dinner table most nights was after the six o'clock news.

• 9:49Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 9:50Speaker 03

After I'd delivered my father a glass of red wine and maybe some nuts. Then we'd eat at six thirty and it was normally just the four of us, gone older brother.

• 9:59Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 9:59Speaker 03

And then my parents. And they'd try and get us to eat together as much as we could once we were sort of six or something. Do you eat with your kids?

• 10:06Jessie Ware?

I, I love it, but I like eating at like five in the, in the evening.

• 10:10Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 10:10Jessie Ware?

I love it. Do you eat with your kids?

• 10:12Speaker 03

  Yeah, we just started to.

• 10:13Jessie Ware?

Are you trying to do the, who delivers you?

• 10:15Speaker 03

  The other night?

• 10:16Jessie Ware?

Yeah, well sushi's, how old is your eldest?

• 10:19Speaker 03

  Ten.

• 10:20Jessie Ware?

  That is the sushi time.

• 10:21Speaker 02

  Girl.

• 10:22Speaker 03

It's the eight year old. She's not that into it. She had a chicken nuggets, she had a gary roll. But no, the eight year old is obsessed with it and he, yeah, yeah, we did it very.

• 10:30Speaker 02

Oh, so the ten year old doesn't like it?

• 10:32Speaker 03

No, no. But no, so we've just started eating with our kids and it's different, a different phase.

• 10:38Speaker 02

  Who cooks?

• 10:39Speaker 03

I do the cooking actually most of the time.

• 10:41Speaker 02

You the main chef in the house?

• 10:43Speaker 03

Yeah, we've all been in denial about that for a while, but the truth is like, I had my wife confess to it the other day as well. I do the cooking.

• 10:49Speaker 02

  What's your best dish?

• 10:53Speaker 03

Well, we eat a lot of salads. I am married to an actor and I like him now as well. She's changed me. So we we we basically go about trying to burn vegetables.

• 11:05Jessie Ware?

Tell you, that's not really cooking.

• 11:07Speaker 03

We burn it. Well, no, wait till you hear this. Wait till you hear this. We'll burn as much.

• 11:12Jessie Ware?

  Is that being me?

• 11:13Speaker 03

Vegetable content as we can. And then we'll do, my go to is like butternut squash, almost burnt.

• 11:20Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 11:20Speaker 03

So it's almost like it's caramelised.

• 11:22Jessie Ware?

  Caramelised, yeah.

• 11:23Speaker 03

  Pine nuts toasted.

• 11:25Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous.

• 11:26Speaker 03

  Feta, chopped up, small avocado.

• 11:29Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 11:30Speaker 03

And sweet corn, fresh. We grow sweet corn and it's absolutely amazing. It's super sweet. And then balsamic olive oil. Like that is good. There's quite a lot of cooking that goes into that. And then chicken breast or something.

• 11:42Jessie Ware?

Okay. I really, well, it sounds delicious.

• 11:46Speaker 03

  Are you gonna judge me?

• 11:47Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 11:48Speaker 03

For the fact that I've just gone air fryer?

• 11:51Jessie Ware?

  No, we love.

• 11:52Speaker 03

  Okay, good. Okay, good.

• 11:53Jessie Ware?

  What's working for you? Yeah.

• 11:55Speaker 03

Well, it's just bang out salmon in eight minutes.

• 11:58Jessie Ware?

  I know.

• 11:59Speaker 03

And it's a total mood changer.

• 12:00Jessie Ware?

  Chicken.

• 12:01Speaker 03

  Chicken in twelve.

• 12:02Jessie Ware?

Have you done um chicken thighs in there yet?

• 12:05Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 12:06Jessie Ware?

Chicken thighs. I think that's the best.

• 12:07Speaker 03

  Game changer.

• 12:08Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 12:08Speaker 03

Game changer. And then we do for our sort of roasting vegetables situation we've got going on.

• 12:13Jessie Ware?

Your veggies in there. I can't go on.

• 12:16Speaker 03

  Tender stem broccoli.

• 12:17Jessie Ware?

Oh. Do you do it in the air fryer? Gorgeous.

• 12:20Speaker 03

  And like proper crispy.

• 12:21Jessie Ware?

Now, are you spraying a little bit of oil on there?

• 12:23Speaker 03

No, do you know what I'm doing? I'm tossing.

• 12:25Jessie Ware?

  Are you?

• 12:26Speaker 03

  I'm pre tossing.

• 12:27Jessie Ware?

You toss it before it goes in?

• 12:28Speaker 03

Pre toss. Yeah, so I don't know. That's probably more indulgent than a spray.

• 12:33Jessie Ware?

I still haven't got your Wimbledon dinner. Okay, so.

• 12:36Speaker 03

  Okay, so yeah.

• 12:37Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 12:37Speaker 03

  Yeah, I'll get distracted.

• 12:38Jessie Ware?

After the nuts and the red wine at six thirty, who was cooking?

• 12:42Speaker 03

  My mum.

• 12:43Jessie Ware?

And was she a great cook?

• 12:45Speaker 03

  Great cook.

• 12:45Jessie Ware?

  What's a very memorable meal?

• 12:47Speaker 03

I mean, her roast chicken would probably still remain my last meal.

• 12:52Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 12:53Speaker 03

If I had to choose one.

• 12:54Jessie Ware?

Do you know that's a question on this?

• 12:56Speaker 03

Oh, yes, is it? Okay, great. Okay, well, I've got another option.

• 12:59Jessie Ware?

  Okay, okay, fine.

• 13:01Speaker 03

Her roast chicken with roast potatoes, some sort of greenery, which was basically irrelevant because it was just a vehicle for gravy.

• 13:08Jessie Ware?

  Mm.

• 13:09Speaker 03

  And redcurrant jelly.

• 13:10Jessie Ware?

Good gravy. I love redcurrant jelly.

• 13:12Speaker 03

Always quite a lot of booze in the gravy.

• 13:13Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 13:14Speaker 03

  A lot of booze.

• 13:15Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 13:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 13:16Jessie Ware?

  It's, I.

• 13:17Speaker 03

And like a deep. Dark brown.

• 13:21Jessie Ware?

  Because of red wine?

• 13:22Speaker 03

Because of red wine and marmite.

• 13:24Jessie Ware?

  Mmm.

• 13:25Speaker 03

She always puts marmite in her gravy.

• 13:26Jessie Ware?

  Do you love marmite?

• 13:27Speaker 03

I like marmite. Yeah, I do. I like, yeah.

• 13:29Jessie Ware?

  Do you like Vegemite?

• 13:30Speaker 03

Yeah. I've got a lot of time for Vegemite.

• 13:32Jessie Ware?

  Me too.

• 13:33Speaker 02

I only put marmite in lamb gravy.

• 13:36Speaker 03

Yeah, see, I think so traditionally chicken gravy is paler.

• 13:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:39Speaker 03

  She always went dark.

• 13:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:41Speaker 03

I think because of the red wine marmite combo.

• 13:42Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 13:43Speaker 03

  It was always very rich.

• 13:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, right.

• 13:45Speaker 03

And I was a fat child.

• 13:48Speaker 02

  So was I.

• 13:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 13:49Speaker 02

  Um, I dessert.

• 13:52Speaker 03

  Always.

• 13:53Speaker 02

  Every evening.

• 13:53Speaker 03

Which has also been a problem for me.

• 13:55Speaker 02

So you didn't have, you weren't made to have just a, an apple after your dinner?

• 14:00Speaker 03

No, we changed that after I had a heart to heart with her when I was about sixteen and was like, I'm quite fat. And she was like, maybe there's some things I could be doing to support you in not being quite so fat. We did, we had that conversation.

• 14:13Speaker 02

  You had that conversation.

• 14:14Speaker 03

And so my snacks changed. I started taking, I think instead of chocolate bars like Kit Kats and Mars bars, I would take in those brunch bars, which is still chocolate covered granola bars.

• 14:24Jessie Ware?

Yeah, they're like masking, like they're basically.

• 14:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 14:27Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 14:27Speaker 03

And like baked Walkers crisps instead of the full.

• 14:30Jessie Ware?

  Mate, me too.

• 14:31Speaker 03

  It was the nineties.

• 14:32Speaker 02

  What was your favourite sandwich?

• 14:34Speaker 03

Um, cheese and ham with some sort of niche chutney in it. Love a niche chutney. My favourite chutney now is Mrs Balls. Have you had that one?

• 14:42Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 14:42Speaker 03

It's a great name, but it's also a great chutney. Mrs Balls, like South African relish.

• 14:47Speaker 02

It's a South African one. I know it is because it's in my apricot, um, chicken recipe.

• 14:53Jessie Ware?

So what are you getting in your local farm shop in, um, in, in Devon?

• 14:56Speaker 03

Well, we're quite close to the Devon Chili Farm and I really like their chutneys. Chili jams.

• 15:03Jessie Ware?

  Yum.

• 15:03Speaker 03

  Hot sauces.

• 15:04Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous.

• 15:04Speaker 03

They're really good. Um, and then we get given a lot of chutney. Because we don't drink, right? So when, yeah, we don't drink. So when people come to our house, they'll bring niche things and most of the time that means they bring chutney.

• 15:19Jessie Ware?

What would you prefer them to bring?

• 15:22Speaker 03

No, do you know what? I'll take Charlie. Candles.

• 15:24Speaker 02

  Candles, always good.

• 15:25Speaker 03

  Yeah, I like a candle.

• 15:27Speaker 02

When did you move to Devon?

• 15:29Speaker 03

  Um, just before Covid.

• 15:32Speaker 02

  Oh, wow. So you've.

• 15:33Speaker 03

Yeah, we, we, we bought a place there in twenty thirteen, but then made it permanent in twenty nineteen.

• 15:41Speaker 02

Do you like it? Prefer it?

• 15:42Speaker 03

Yeah, we love it. It's just home now.

• 15:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:45Speaker 02

And do you surf there? Is it near enough?

• 15:48Speaker 03

Yeah, it's about an hour to the south coast surf breaks and then an hour and twenty to the north coast.

• 15:54Speaker 02

What's the earliest you've got up to catch a wave?

• 15:57Speaker 03

  Four.

• 15:59Speaker 02

Have you on a WhatsApp group with all your mates and they're like?

• 16:01Speaker 03

Surfline. We spend quite a lot of time on Surfline. Um, Surfline is like the app that gives you the wave predictions and stuff and the weather forecast.

• 16:09Speaker 02

  You've got a dry robe?

• 16:10Speaker 03

I don't have a dry robe. I use those, I use those hoodie towels. That's a good present. I use those hoodie towels. Or just, uh, you can just use a bathrobe.

• 16:20Speaker 02

I know. So how high are the waves that you're catching?

• 16:24Speaker 03

I'm not a good surfer. I'm a keen surfer. I'm the same with lots of different hobbies. I'm not like particularly good at them, but I love.

• 16:30Speaker 02

Is there an etiquette in Devon? Because there's definitely one in Malibu we learned.

• 16:34Jessie Ware?

Yes, we had, we had Minnie Driver on who's a kid.

• 16:37Speaker 03

  I've surfed with Minnie.

• 16:39Jessie Ware?

  In Malibu?

• 16:39Speaker 03

  Yeah, I have.

• 16:40Speaker 02

  Your turn.

• 16:41Speaker 03

No, I did. No, she gets, she gets angry. I've come across people who have come across her. Yeah, she doesn't mess around. Now Diplo is a rascal, though.

• 16:51Jessie Ware?

Yeah, this is what he said.

• 16:52Speaker 03

He's an absolute rascal and I've surfed with him as well and he is a rascal. They all surf. Yeah, they all surf at this place. He pushes in and yeah, um, they all surf at this place.

• 17:03Speaker 02

  Near where she's got her.

• 17:04Speaker 03

In Point Dume, yeah, yeah, yeah. Or Paradise Cove. And there are some amazing surf breaks around it. And Malibu's so busy, but you have to have a key to get to the beaches, which seems like a very strange thing.

• 17:14Speaker 02

You have to have a key now.

• 17:15Speaker 03

You have to have a key fob to get into the beaches.

• 17:17Speaker 02

I wonder if you still have to now since all of the.

• 17:20Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, I don't know, actually. But, yeah, I lived, because I was born in California and so, and then I lived off and on in the States all my life, really. But, um, uh, I, I went and made a record in LA, a solo record in LA, and I lived in Topanga. And so we'd surfed.

• 17:36Speaker 02

  I love to panga.

• 17:37Jessie Ware?

I think that's when we hung out. You were on your own. I think your wife had just gone to make a film in New York.

• 17:43Speaker 03

  She's always doing that, yeah.

• 17:44Jessie Ware?

Yeah, and I think you had just done it with Blake.

• 17:47Speaker 03

  Yes, that's right.

• 17:47Jessie Ware?

I think you were just finishing it.

• 17:49Speaker 03

  That's right.

• 17:49Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 17:50Speaker 03

Yeah, and so I was surfing every day. That was the best thing about it. But they get really crowded and they and it gets really, you know, surfers are supposed to be cool and chill and kind of there's very much not.

• 18:00Speaker 02

  Many isn't.

• 18:01Speaker 03

It's like everyone gets into fights all the time.

• 18:03Speaker 02

  Fights?

• 18:04Speaker 03

Yeah, I'll drop more sea bombs in the ocean than I have anywhere else.

• 18:07Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 18:08Speaker 03

  Well, it gets quite eggy.

• 18:09Speaker 02

And oh my. Why is that? Because people won't take their turn?

• 18:12Speaker 03

Yeah, when it's overcrowded, everyone's got, you know, in L A, everyone's got like an hour to surf whenever that period. And so if someone gets in the way of their wave, they get very upset. Because they're not in like Bali where they can just surf all day, you know.

• 18:23Speaker 02

I do think Malibu is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It's really tragic.

• 18:28Speaker 03

  Do you love it?

• 18:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:29Jessie Ware?

I'm gonna try and deal with this state.

• 18:32Speaker 03

Can I do anything to be helpful?

• 18:33Jessie Ware?

No, you can't. You can just answer the questions, Marcus.

• 18:36Speaker 03

  Okay, I'm very excited.

• 18:38Speaker 02

I still, besides the roast chicken.

• 18:40Speaker 03

Yeah, you don't know much about.

• 18:42Speaker 02

About your dinners in the evening? Because you didn't eat roast chicken every night.

• 18:45Speaker 03

No, we ate a lot of lasagna.

• 18:47Speaker 02

  Did your mum work?

• 18:49Speaker 03

Yeah, my, both of my parents are vicars.

• 18:52Speaker 02

  They're both vicars?

• 18:52Speaker 03

Yeah, and they work together all the way.

• 18:54Speaker 02

So, but are they still working?

• 18:56Speaker 03

They still, yeah, they still work, yeah, both of them. So they.

• 19:00Speaker 02

I, look, I'm Jewish, so, um, we're Jewish, so I don't know anything about the Church of England, really.

• 19:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:07Speaker 02

So did you have a parish and did you live in?

• 19:09Speaker 03

So they were in the Church of England, then they left the Church of England, moved to California.

• 19:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:13Speaker 03

Joined a church called the Vineyard Church.

• 19:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:16Speaker 03

Which is kind of pretty similar to a bunch of the Church of England churches around here. And then they came over here and planted the first Vineyard Church in our front room in Wimbledon.

• 19:27Speaker 02

  How amazing.

• 19:28Speaker 03

A lot of it was based out of our house. So she would entertain like three nights a week. So we'd be have people around all the time. And she'd always cook and she'd make appetizers and then lots of stews and things that are easy for twenty people.

• 19:42Speaker 02

But when you were little, did they have their own church and then they, um, you had the house attached to the church?

• 19:50Speaker 03

No, our, our house was the church to start with. Yeah.

• 19:53Speaker 02

Oh, your house was always the church?

• 19:55Speaker 03

Yeah, when, so when I was six months old, they came back from California and they started the church literally off that ground with like. Us and two other people. And then it grew and grew and grew and then they planted a bunch of others. Yeah, it's really cool. So we just have people around.

• 20:10Speaker 02

So religion's always been a huge part of your life. Yeah, and you're still.

• 20:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:15Speaker 02

  You're still religious.

• 20:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:17Speaker 02

And does that mean all your children are baptized?

• 20:22Speaker 03

No, I only got baptized a few years ago.

• 20:25Speaker 02

  Really?

• 20:25Speaker 03

Yeah, because our, our church didn't do infant baptism.

• 20:31Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 20:32Speaker 03

They left it to be, they dedicate kids and then they'd um in a kind of ceremony, but then they'd leave it up to the kids as they grew up.

• 20:39Speaker 02

Okay, that's, that's the thing, yeah.

• 20:42Speaker 03

  Um, so no, yeah.

• 20:44Speaker 02

  And does food feature?

• 20:46Speaker 03

  Massively.

• 20:46Speaker 02

  In the vineyard church?

• 20:47Speaker 03

Yeah massively. They used to do donuts at half time.

• 20:51Speaker 02

Funny, that keep the kids interested.

• 20:53Speaker 03

Hospitality was a huge part of the whole concept of church. Because a lot of it was based on sort of the early church models of people gathering and sharing things and, you know, a bit more DIY than the higher church stuff, which we loved and had respect for and had friends in. But this was a different kind of way of doing it.

• 21:13Speaker 02

And is your wife part of that church now as well?

• 21:17Speaker 03

No, she grew up in a Catholic church.

• 21:20Speaker 02

  Okay, so is she Catholic?

• 21:22Speaker 03

Hmm. I don't know, what's she call herself now? We haven't kind of fiddled with names for a while.

• 21:28Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 21:30Speaker 03

But we both grew up with faith backgrounds.

• 21:32Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 21:33Speaker 03

And um both still have a faith, although it's probably quite different to what we grew up with. And yeah, I mean, for me, growing up, it was a privilege because we're just surrounded by people all the time. And people who were trying to be kind, mostly.

• 21:50Speaker 02

  That's good.

• 21:51Speaker 03

With some rotters along the way, but mostly people who are trying to figure out how to be kinder. That's why I love religious communities.

• 21:58Speaker 02

So the vineyard church, where did that come from?

• 22:01Speaker 03

  California.

• 22:02Speaker 02

Wine was, what, was wine involved?

• 22:05Speaker 03

Yeah, I guess there's lots of stuff in the Bible about wine.

• 22:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:09Speaker 03

I don't actually know where it comes from.

• 22:10Speaker 02

Is Harvest Festival a big thing still? Not at all?

• 22:13Speaker 03

No, well, not for us, it wasn't.

• 22:15Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 22:16Speaker 03

But they'd have like groups three times a week.

• 22:18Speaker 02

Okay, so it's not like a regular church service?

• 22:20Speaker 03

And then Sunday services as well, yeah. Started in a local school, well, it started in our house, then it went to a local school. And was in a school hall for a long time, basically.

• 22:30Speaker 02

So how big would the congregation be?

• 22:33Speaker 03

  Couple of hundred.

• 22:34Speaker 02

  Oh, it's quite big.

• 22:35Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. And then they planted out of that church, they planted a hundred different churches around the country.

• 22:40Speaker 02

  Fantastic.

• 22:41Speaker 03

Yeah, it's cool. And then they took over the more international stuff.

• 22:44Speaker 02

So are they head of that, the vineyard church in Britain?

• 22:47Speaker 03

  In the world.

• 22:48Speaker 02

  In the world?

• 22:49Speaker 03

They're like, well, they're like the UN Secretary General for the vineyard church, yeah.

• 22:54Speaker 02

So do they travel around the world?

• 22:55Speaker 03

Yeah, they do loads of travelling still.

• 22:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:58Speaker 03

  Yeah, they're amazing people.

• 23:00Speaker 02

  God, they sound amazing.

• 23:01Speaker 03

They're really cool. You'd like my mum. You and my mum would get on very well.

• 23:04Speaker 02

  Do you think?

• 23:04Speaker 03

Yeah, do you? Cut from the same clock, I think.

• 23:53Jessie Ware?

Right, we have the food. It's beef tagliata. And then this is a mob kitchen. Do you have like?

• 23:59Speaker 03

  Yes, yes.

• 24:00Jessie Ware?

  The app?

• 24:01Speaker 03

  No, not the app.

• 24:02Jessie Ware?

Oh, the app's really good, though.

• 24:03Speaker 03

  Oh, is it?

• 24:04Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 24:05Speaker 03

  No, I haven't done that.

• 24:06Jessie Ware?

It's really good for like, they do loads of like protein packed things, they do lots of-

• 24:10Speaker 03

Eat like you give a fuck. Isn't that the tagline?

• 24:12Jessie Ware?

Is it? I don't, I think they've changed that now. But anyway, help yourself. But this is a mob kitchen. It's kind of whipped-

• 24:21Speaker 02

  No, darling, you start.

• 24:22Jessie Ware?

Whipped pea artichoke, something or other with new potatoes, sesame, asparagus and feta. So please help yourself.

• 24:32Speaker 03

This is, this just looks amazing. Wait, what's going on here? This is some crushed, I thought it was potato salad, but no, no.

• 24:37Jessie Ware?

  Potato salad, but it's with-

• 24:38Speaker 03

But there's lots going on down here.

• 24:40Jessie Ware?

Yes, there's like a kind of puree pea artichoke thing. It's pretty healthy.

• 24:45Speaker 03

  Really healthy.

• 24:46Jessie Ware?

I need to know, you're married to a brilliant actress.

• 24:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:50Jessie Ware?

  Actor, Carey Mulligan.

• 24:52Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 24:52Speaker 02

You must be so proud of her.

• 24:54Speaker 03

I'm very proud of her. Yeah, I am.

• 24:57Jessie Ware?

  She is remarkable.

• 24:58Speaker 03

  She's seriously.

• 24:59Jessie Ware?

I bet she does, she's wonderful.

• 25:01Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, she's. She's amazing.

• 25:04Jessie Ware?

How are you with doing like, you know, when she gets a script? I mean, I'm sure she doesn't have to audition for anything anymore because she's just fantastic and probably people are knocking at the door trying to, you know. But do you ever have to do, you know, the back and forth for her to learn her lines?

• 25:20Speaker 03

  The Notting Hill thing?

• 25:21Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 25:21Speaker 03

We do that far less than I was anticipating when I got together with an actress.

• 25:25Jessie Ware?

  Cosplay.

• 25:27Speaker 03

No, it's not so much that.

• 25:28Jessie Ware?

Bradley Cooper. Actually, I don't know if you'd want to be maestro, would you? Because he wasn't very kind to, well.

• 25:33Speaker 03

  Wasn't very kind.

• 25:34Jessie Ware?

  Used her bit.

• 25:35Speaker 03

No, I did, I, I, we, I, early on we did a bit, but, um, no, she tends to learn her lines like quite late.

• 25:44Jessie Ware?

  Oh, she's one of them.

• 25:45Speaker 03

  She's really, I mean, I can't.

• 25:47Jessie Ware?

  Oh, she's a crammer.

• 25:48Speaker 03

She can remember. Yeah, she's a crammer, yeah. But she's really excellent at her job.

• 25:53Jessie Ware?

  She's, she is.

• 25:55Speaker 03

And I, I remember that every time, because I didn't watch, I didn't watch a couple of her films in a row. I can't remember why. But like she said in the dig, I never saw.

• 26:03Jessie Ware?

  I loved it.

• 26:05Speaker 03

Yeah, and then I felt bad.

• 26:07Jessie Ware?

Todd, and you didn't see it or you had?

• 26:08Speaker 03

No, but I did see one. The play that she'd just done before that, I watched 10 times. So I was like.

• 26:13Jessie Ware?

I saw it. Was that when she cooked spag bol on stage?

• 26:15Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 26:16Jessie Ware?

  That was unbelievable.

• 26:17Speaker 03

That was skylight. That was really impressive.

• 26:19Jessie Ware?

  That was flown away.

• 26:19Speaker 03

And she makes a mean spag bol. She went to a whole like cooking lesson to learn how to make fast, delicious spag bol. Because she has to eat it every night as well.

• 26:27Jessie Ware?

She was chopping that shit on stage with, it was Bill Nighy.

• 26:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 26:31Jessie Ware?

  It was brilliant, that play.

• 26:32Speaker 03

What was the name of the film? Skylight was the play. Oh, yeah.

• 26:34Jessie Ware?

  Was it at the National?

• 26:35Speaker 03

  At the National.

• 26:36Jessie Ware?

It was fantastic. And that spag bol looked wicked. So she's really good at spag bol.

• 26:42Speaker 03

And she did that thing with the onion where you can.

• 26:44Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 26:45Speaker 03

  Chop it really fast.

• 26:46Jessie Ware?

And I was just stressed out for her because I was like, she's got to say her lines. She's looking at her dad.

• 26:50Speaker 03

I know, it was, it was multitasking.

• 26:52Jessie Ware?

It was amazing. So, Last Supper, starter, main, put, drink of choice.

• 27:01Speaker 03

  I should have prepped this, shouldn't I?

• 27:02Jessie Ware?

Yeah, you had a long journey.

• 27:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 27:04Speaker 02

But I think he knows what he wants.

• 27:07Speaker 03

The start is gonna be, my mum makes at Christmas mushroom puffs.

• 27:12Speaker 02

  Mmm.

• 27:13Speaker 03

Which is quite seventies, I think.

• 27:14Speaker 02

  Like Vol Evan?

• 27:15Speaker 03

  Yeah, sorts of.

• 27:17Speaker 02

  The kind of creamy mushroom.

• 27:19Speaker 03

  Smith.

• 27:20Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 27:21Speaker 03

But it's that mushroomy, you know, chopped up mushrooms and charrots.

• 27:24Speaker 02

Yeah, with a creamy sauce, yeah.

• 27:26Speaker 03

But and then and then fold it over in in puff pastry. Unbelievable.

• 27:32Speaker 02

Does she put any herbs in, like tarragon?

• 27:34Speaker 03

  Time.

• 27:35Speaker 02

  Time?

• 27:35Speaker 03

  And maybe tarragon, yeah.

• 27:36Jessie Ware?

  Yum.

• 27:38Speaker 03

They're really good, and those I associate with Christmas.

• 27:40Jessie Ware?

  Does that be your starter?

• 27:42Speaker 03

That'd be my starter, and then beef wellington, because I just love pastry.

• 27:47Jessie Ware?

It's foraging season now, isn't it? Like mushroom foraging season. Will you be doing that?

• 27:50Speaker 03

Yeah, we've got some field mushrooms that are out at the moment.

• 27:52Jessie Ware?

  Are they delicious?

• 27:54Speaker 02

Do you trust your knowledge on mushrooms?

• 27:56Speaker 03

I'm a bit nervous about that. Apparently you can't get them from the woods. They have to be from the field, and they can't have yellow ones.

• 28:01Speaker 02

I bought some mushroom thick book, but I still wouldn't eat it.

• 28:04Jessie Ware?

He'd prefer to take the other ones that are.

• 28:07Speaker 03

It's unclear to me which ones will kill you and which ones will make you high, and which ones taste nice on toast.

• 28:11Speaker 02

  Yeah, just be careful.

• 28:13Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 28:14Speaker 03

Yeah, it does feel like a roll of the dice. That's quite a high stakes game. But, um.

• 28:18Speaker 02

  Exciting, though.

• 28:20Jessie Ware?

No, well, could kill you, so, yeah.

• 28:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:23Jessie Ware?

So, okay, we've got a beef wellington sides. I'm thinking, are they, what do you have as a side?

• 28:28Speaker 03

You don't need much with a beef wellington. It's almost a complete meal on its own, which means that you could do a double portion. So maybe it's just a double portion of beef wellington.

• 28:35Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, gorgeous.

• 28:37Speaker 03

  Let's straight to that.

• 28:37Speaker 02

  No potatoes?

• 28:39Speaker 03

  We've got the pastry.

• 28:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:41Speaker 03

  You've got vegetables and mushrooms.

• 28:42Speaker 02

Oh, okay. So we're not gonna go cream spinach? No, we're not gonna do any of that?

• 28:47Speaker 03

  I mean, I'll take it.

• 28:47Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, fine, okay.

• 28:48Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, lovely.

• 28:49Speaker 02

  Um, a salad?

• 28:51Speaker 03

No, no, not my last meal.

• 28:52Jessie Ware?

  He's had enough of them.

• 28:53Speaker 02

Okay, with his wife, I know, yeah. Okay, pudding.

• 28:57Speaker 03

Beef wellington. Um, I will always, if I'm in a restaurant, I will always order, if they have it on the menu, a chocolate fondant.

• 29:06Jessie Ware?

If you'd have told us, I'd have done one. Do you remember I did them?

• 29:09Speaker 03

I just, I like, I like being able to compare and contrast.

• 29:12Jessie Ware?

  Where's your best chocolate fondant?

• 29:14Speaker 03

I think it was in my house growing up.

• 29:17Jessie Ware?

Your mum made those as well.

• 29:19Speaker 03

  Ninety six.

• 29:20Jessie Ware?

  Your mum's a god.

• 29:22Speaker 03

And it was like in those trays with the wa- hot water in it.

• 29:25Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, Banbury.

• 29:26Speaker 03

Banbury. And um, I don't think, and then that company goo.

• 29:32Jessie Ware?

  They're pretty good, they're good.

• 29:33Speaker 03

  Pretty good.

• 29:34Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, they're really good.

• 29:35Speaker 03

Pretty good and they came in the little ramekins.

• 29:37Jessie Ware?

Yeah, we all had all the glass ramekins, yeah.

• 29:39Speaker 03

But I think the be- the best one was my mum's one.

• 29:42Jessie Ware?

Oh, that's lovely. And what do you have with it?

• 29:44Speaker 03

Everything. I think double cream and ice cream.

• 29:47Jessie Ware?

Gorgeous. That's what Jessie likes, cream with ice cream. What's your ice cream of choice?

• 29:52Speaker 03

  Um.

• 29:52Jessie Ware?

You had a bit of an addiction to ice cream, didn't you? You kind of replaced drinking with ice cream.

• 29:56Speaker 03

Yeah, I did, yeah. I uh, went big on ice cream for a while.

• 30:00Jessie Ware?

  I love ice cream.

• 30:01Speaker 03

Cause I wasn't losing weight and I was like. Well, I stopped drinking, so obviously I should have.

• 30:06Jessie Ware?

You replaced the sugar with the sugar. What was your ice cream of choice? Anything or?

• 30:11Speaker 03

Haagen Dazs, um, uh, Pralines and Cream.

• 30:14Jessie Ware?

  My favourite.

• 30:15Speaker 03

I don't think you can beat it.

• 30:16Jessie Ware?

Do you, can you, can you return back to it and still get joy from it, like?

• 30:20Speaker 03

  I haven't for a while, actually.

• 30:22Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 30:22Speaker 03

I had a couple of ice creams in, on holiday in Devon last month that were pretty great.

• 30:28Jessie Ware?

While mum is sorting out the food, you have a new Mumford album coming out next year.

• 30:36Speaker 03

  Mm hmm.

• 30:36Jessie Ware?

But you're touring, how much music are you touring of the new stuff now? And you also have a beautiful single with Hosea.

• 30:43Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 30:44Jessie Ware?

  Is he lovely?

• 30:45Speaker 03

  He's amazing. He's unbelievably tall.

• 30:48Jessie Ware?

I thought you were gonna say talented, but yeah.

• 30:49Speaker 03

No, no, no. First things first. The guy is so tall.

• 30:54Jessie Ware?

  You're pretty tall.

• 30:55Speaker 03

  He's, I know, but he's like six.

• 30:56Jessie Ware?

  He's like a basketball player.

• 30:58Speaker 03

Yeah. He's absolutely massive. So because he's kind.

• 31:01Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 31:02Speaker 03

You just feel like he's like a big walking.

• 31:05Jessie Ware?

How did you meet each other?

• 31:07Speaker 03

We met a really long time ago. I mean, he came on tour with us. We he played.

• 31:13Jessie Ware?

Was that after Take Me to Church, kind of?

• 31:15Speaker 03

Yes. We met him around then, early on.

• 31:18Jessie Ware?

Your voices suit each other, so it's beautiful.

• 31:21Speaker 03

I mean, he's one of my favourite people to sing with in the world and is just monstrously talented, but monstrously kind. I did his podcast. He did like a kind of compassion focused podcast for a while. And I went on that to talk about War Child and Grenfell. And we've just been mates ever since, really. I mean, we don't see each other huge amount because he's very busy.

• 31:43Jessie Ware?

So is that why you had to do a song together?

• 31:45Speaker 03

  Um, as an excuse.

• 31:46Jessie Ware?

To hang out. Has he come on the, has he come on stage yet?

• 31:49Speaker 03

We had him out in soundcheck when we were in the States before the song came out. And we got to sing it together on stage there.

• 31:56Jessie Ware?

So maybe it's it's prepped. The live, the live performance is prepped.

• 32:00Speaker 03

And he played with us when he played with us.

• 32:01Jessie Ware?

He could pop up at any time.

• 32:02Speaker 03

He played with us last time we did Austin City Limits, he came up.

• 32:04Jessie Ware?

A lot of Austin City Limits.

• 32:06Speaker 03

  Great one. That's a really, that's one.

• 32:08Jessie Ware?

  That's a goodie.

• 32:08Speaker 03

Yeah, it's a really good one. Um, but yeah, I just love him to bits. He's amazing.

• 32:14Jessie Ware?

So how does it feel? What what album are you on now for Mumford?

• 32:19Speaker 03

That's a great question. I think it's number six. Yeah, we put five out. Earlier this year and then six is coming beginning of next year. So it's two within a calendar year, which we've never done before. Which actually I'm really excited about. We just went through this period of time where we just wrote loads of songs, yeah. We met together in January twenty three and said like, let's just try and write as many songs as we can. And and move around the world until we find the songs and then just keep going until we find more. So we. We started in L A, then we went to um Devon and Dave Cobb came along with us, who produced Rushmere. Then we went to Nashville with him for a while in Savannah, Georgia. Then we went to Paris and New York with Pharrell.

• 33:04Speaker 03

And just started writing songs together, which one of the songs we put out called Good People. And he really like breathed inspiration into me personally.

• 33:14Speaker 03

Um. In a massive way. It was like a complete breath of fresh air. He's have you worked with him?

• 33:19Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 33:20Speaker 03

  He's like.

• 33:20Jessie Ware?

  And I was obsessed with N E R D.

• 33:22Speaker 03

Yeah, he's just so imaginative and endlessly creative, but also like thrives when he sees other people thriving. You know, like that's when I think he's the best version of himself, when he's watching other people like shine and come out of their skins. He's just unbelievably generous, creative. And so, and he sort of gave me a few pep talks where he was like, look, you know, don't be afraid of writing what you really think, what you really feel, and writing loads as well. It's like you've got more capacity in you than you're allowing yourself.

• 33:53Jessie Ware?

Was there a conversation that happened that you talked about your fear then?

• 33:57Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. I mean, I was being quite, I mean, it was kind of like therapy sessions that turned into songs. He's like, let's just talk before we start writing. Oh, my lord.

• 34:06Jessie Ware?

  Well, this is quite seasonal.

• 34:08Speaker 03

I mean, I get overwhelmingly tempted to just be like.

• 34:12Jessie Ware?

Have you, have you ever done a, a cake smash?

• 34:15Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 34:16Jessie Ware?

And did it end horribly rough?

• 34:18Speaker 03

No. I mean, it did what Bugsy Malone would want it to do. So it was great.

• 34:22Jessie Ware?

  Okay, great.

• 34:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 34:23Jessie Ware?

When did you do your last cake smash?

• 34:25Speaker 03

It's been a good ten years.

• 34:26Jessie Ware?

  Okay, very fine.

• 34:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 34:27Jessie Ware?

Would you ever do it to one of your children?

• 34:29Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 34:30Jessie Ware?

  Which one?

• 34:31Speaker 03

We have a forfeit scheme rather than a punishment scheme in our house where like.

• 34:34Jessie Ware?

  This sounds great.

• 34:35Speaker 03

Well, you know, if you tell tales, you have to do five star jumps.

• 34:40Jessie Ware?

  Snitches get snitches, yeah?

• 34:41Speaker 03

Normally, like the person being told tales on also has to do five star jumps for the thing that they did. Like, he punched me. Okay, give me five star jumps for telling tales. But also, if you punched her, you've got to do five.

• 34:53Jessie Ware?

So hon, how would, I, I'm interested in this parenting technique because kids are always telling tales. Um. Would you prefer them to just sort it out themselves then?

• 35:03Speaker 03

Yeah, and I think this encourages them to actually, because most of the time they don't, they know that there's a forfeit. Not a punishment, but a forfeit included if they do it. It makes them think twice.

• 35:13Jessie Ware?

I'm gonna, Marcus, maybe you should start like a parenting podcast.

• 35:16Speaker 03

We have a forfeit if you leave your liquids in your bags at the airport. It's that, you know, I think pisses me off more than that.

• 35:22Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but you allow them now.

• 35:23Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 35:24Jessie Ware?

  In some airports.

• 35:24Speaker 03

Well, then maybe that changes the game.

• 35:26Jessie Ware?

But you never know. Are you like that?

• 35:28Speaker 03

Oh, there's a really good one. We thought of a good one with, if you um are bragging, you have to instantly give fifty percent of whatever it is you're bragging about to the person you're bragging to.

• 35:37Jessie Ware?

  So what's an example?

• 35:38Speaker 03

So I've got ten M and M's and I'm like, heh heh. Straight away, yeah.

• 35:42Jessie Ware?

  And do you.

• 35:43Speaker 03

  Five away.

• 35:43Jessie Ware?

And that absolutely has to happen.

• 35:45Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's a consequence.

• 35:46Speaker 02

  Darling, would you like some?

• 35:47Speaker 03

  Yeah, absolutely, love some, thanks.

• 35:49Speaker 02

  It's, um.

• 35:50Speaker 03

  Looks phenomenal.

• 35:51Speaker 02

Hazel nut and brown sugar pavlova with quince.

• 35:55Speaker 03

  Oh, you're cultured.

• 35:58Jessie Ware?

Do you have quinces at the moment on the farm?

• 36:00Speaker 03

No, we've got apples and pears and blackberries still.

• 36:03Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous.

• 36:04Speaker 03

Blackberries felt like we've had them forever.

• 36:06Jessie Ware?

You're a bit done with them.

• 36:07Speaker 03

Well, no, it's a real, it's an activity.

• 36:11Jessie Ware?

  Oh, yeah, that is true.

• 36:13Speaker 03

Um, can I have half that amount, please?

• 36:15Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I'll have the other half, actually. It's going on tour, Mum, come on, he's got to be in like this.

• 36:21Speaker 03

So much, look at that, that's amazing, thank you.

• 36:23Jessie Ware?

I'm getting another extra quince, though, I feel like.

• 36:26Speaker 03

Quinces are quite big, are they? What's a quince related to? Is it like a crab apple?

• 36:30Speaker 02

  Like a pear crab apple.

• 36:32Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 36:33Jessie Ware?

Um, so, okay, so you've got the bragging, I'm gonna try this and I'm gonna let you know. I'm gonna get your number and I'm gonna let you know how it goes.

• 36:40Speaker 03

I'm trying to think what else.

• 36:41Jessie Ware?

  Bragging, telltells.

• 36:43Speaker 03

Yeah, if you, um, ask where something is.

• 36:48Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 36:49Speaker 03

And I find it within 10 seconds, you've got to give me 10 star jumps.

• 36:52Jessie Ware?

  So it's all star jumps?

• 36:54Speaker 03

  Or press ups.

• 36:55Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 36:55Speaker 03

  Changes, yeah. Yeah.

• 36:57Jessie Ware?

This is a genius idea, dude.

• 36:59Speaker 03

Now, my wife and I do it with, with each other as well. Like, if I'm like, babe, where's my phone? And she's like, if I, and she walks in and it's on the side where I'm standing, it's 10, it's 10 press ups.

• 37:09Jessie Ware?

  How's your relationship with having?

• 37:11Speaker 03

  Better than ever.

• 37:12Jessie Ware?

And how are your star jumps?

• 37:13Speaker 03

Better than, better than ever, they're really good, they're really strong now.

• 37:16Jessie Ware?

This is, this is, I'm gonna, I'm gonna try this.

• 37:20Speaker 03

Oh, my lord. That is unbelievable.

• 37:23Jessie Ware?

  Mmm.

• 37:24Speaker 03

  That is unbelievable.

• 37:25Jessie Ware?

  Mum.

• 37:26Speaker 03

Is this one of those where you had it somewhere and were like?

• 37:28Speaker 02

  No.

• 37:29Speaker 03

I wanna, did you make it up?

• 37:30Jessie Ware?

  Mum.

• 37:31Speaker 02

  No, I didn't make it.

• 37:31Jessie Ware?

Mum, this is good. Also, the meringue is really good and the hazelnuts are amazing with it.

• 37:36Speaker 03

The quince is very sweet. I associate quinces with being a bit bitter, am I wrong?

• 37:43Jessie Ware?

I don't know enough about quince.

• 37:44Speaker 03

  It's unbelievable.

• 37:45Jessie Ware?

Let's talk about the music, let's talk about all these different places that you wrote and were inspired. This sounds insane.

• 37:51Speaker 03

Well, actually Noel Gallagher talks about songs like the, everyone knows they fall from the sky, but you've got to have your hands out ready to catch them, otherwise fucking Bono or Chris Martin are gonna catch them.

• 38:02Speaker 03

So I like that, cause I once, I saw, I saw Gatnoll actually a few years ago at a bar and we were off the road for a minute and I was just like taking him in it and he was like, what are you up to? I said, I'm just taking a minute, I'm knackered, you know, been touring, like, you know how it is. He's like, no, sorry mate, I don't. Are you a songwriter? I was like, yes. He was like, well, then you should be writing songs every day. Cause it's a muscle that will go into our fear unless you're writing.

• 38:24Speaker 02

  Jesse.

• 38:25Speaker 03

And he was really right, actually. So then, so then in January twenty three, when the band got back together, I told them the whole Gallagher thought. And um, and we did, we started just writing every day, like whatever, whatever came out, didn't care about the quality, just cared about the quantity. And we just started writing and writing, writing, writing. And then over the course of a couple of years, we had, you know, whilst we were mixing Rushmere, Aaron Dessner was in the studio next door.

• 38:50Speaker 02

  Love him.

• 38:50Speaker 03

Working with Gracie Abrams. And we were just all there in this electric lady in New York, sharing this kind of creative space. Aaron came in and was like, this is what I've been doing, something that he and Justin Vernon had been working up. And we heard it and instantly we're like, we've got to write the lyrics to this one. So we started with that. And then we wrote another and another. And the same week we were mixing, we were like four songs on to the next record.

• 39:15Speaker 02

  That's so exciting.

• 39:16Speaker 03

Having done all this work with Pharrell as well. So we, we just kept rolling and then, so I, it's been a really prolific period for the band and I'm really excited. This is the most proud of anything we've ever, that I am of anything we've ever done here.

• 39:31Speaker 02

Did you need that time away to do the solo record? Did you need to scratch that itch to be able to then kind of?

• 39:37Speaker 03

  I think so.

• 39:38Speaker 02

  Get back together and.

• 39:40Speaker 03

Yeah, you know, Covid was weird and then, yeah, I did. I had this kind of urge to go off and make something a bit weirder.

• 39:47Speaker 02

And it was beautiful. Your solo record was beautiful.

• 39:49Speaker 03

Yeah, I loved it, but then come back home, which is the band. And um, and so we really just attacked it since then. And we're like, forced to think like, what really are we as a band and what makes us?

• 40:02Speaker 02

Do you collaborate when you're writing songs for TV shows like Daisy Jones? So.

• 40:07Speaker 03

Yeah, I did. I did that with Blake. Well, a bunch actually, a bunch of his friends as well.

• 40:11Speaker 02

  Did you meet Riley Keir?

• 40:13Speaker 03

  We did meet her, yeah.

• 40:14Speaker 02

  Was she wonderful?

• 40:15Speaker 03

  She's amazing.

• 40:16Speaker 02

Yeah, and she sang your song.

• 40:18Speaker 03

Yeah, she's an amazing like producer and director and writer and all those things as well. She's really kind of.

• 40:23Speaker 02

And of course Reece produced it, Daisy Jones.

• 40:26Speaker 03

She did, yeah. That was Hello Sunshine, wasn't it?

• 40:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:29Speaker 03

Um, yeah, that was really collaborative. The Ted Lasso thing that I did was really collaborative. Um, with an amazing composer called Tom Howe, who's a real hero. And yeah, I love writing songs with other people.

• 40:42Jessie Ware?

  How exciting.

• 40:45Jessie Ware?

Hint me. Oh, my God. Love to write with you.

• 40:48Speaker 03

I have, I, I, I never did it to start with in the band. I never did it. And then I've started doing it more recently and I really love it. It's fun.

• 40:56Jessie Ware?

So, okay, have you got another album in the tank now that you've like, have you been, you, will you write on tour or do you feel like that's just pressure?

• 41:02Speaker 03

I find it hard to write on tour, but I'm, I'm being more disciplined about carving out time to write.

• 41:07Jessie Ware?

Because Noel Gallagher said that to you.

• 41:09Speaker 03

Because I've got to have my hands up.

• 41:10Jessie Ware?

Better get me on Joanna tonight.

• 41:13Speaker 03

  You write on the piano?

• 41:14Jessie Ware?

No, I don't fucking write on the piano. No, I go.

• 41:18Speaker 03

  See you in the shower.

• 41:20Jessie Ware?

No, I can't. You know what? I had a funny one on this record where, and it doesn't happen to me that much because I don't play any instruments. And I hate myself for that. And that's why my daughter's playing three instruments, so she can play for me. But yeah, no, I go in the studio and I collaborate and I am gonna learn the piano. I'm gonna relearn the piano. And I'm gonna sit, but I'll think of things like on a bike. I always find it when I'm riding on a bike.

• 41:44Speaker 03

Movement, I find movement is helpful, yeah.

• 41:46Jessie Ware?

  Swimming.

• 41:46Speaker 03

  Trains.

• 41:47Jessie Ware?

  Trains, sky, the sky.

• 41:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:50Jessie Ware?

Maybe it's because I've had a few glasses of wine, but I, there's something, you've got the space.

• 41:54Speaker 03

Yeah, and I find like kinetic energy often, like first poems I ever write, we're on a train.

• 42:00Speaker 02

So, excuse me, when are you collaborating?

• 42:02Jessie Ware?

Oh, we're, we're, we're about to actually make a, we're gonna go on it, we're gonna go holiday, aren't we?

• 42:07Speaker 03

Yeah, exactly, yeah, with no children.

• 42:08Jessie Ware?

Now I understand why you went to all these places to, to work.

• 42:12Speaker 02

  Jessie, Mumford and Sister.

• 42:14Speaker 03

There we go, that's really sweet.

• 42:15Jessie Ware?

  Mumford and Mums.

• 42:17Speaker 03

That's good. Um, I, Aaron Dessner was really inspiring to me on this because I watched, you know, he's been a friend for a long time. He helped us with the demos for our third record. And then No National remained one of my favorite bands ever. And then he started producing more and more, including all those Taylor Swift records with Jack Antonoff.

• 42:39Jessie Ware?

Folklore is one of our faves.

• 42:40Speaker 03

  It's amazing.

• 42:41Jessie Ware?

  Beautiful.

• 42:42Speaker 03

And just watching his journey as a collaborator and as a producer has been really inspiring to me. So then.

• 42:48Jessie Ware?

So you're gonna start producing then?

• 42:50Speaker 03

I have done a little bit. I've just done something with Maisy Peters, which is really fun. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say that.

• 42:56Speaker 02

Have you got a studio down on the farm?

• 42:58Speaker 03

Yeah. In fact, Erin called me during Covid, at the end of Covid, when it was legal, and said, I've got someone I'm working with that needs a studio in the UK. Do you know this story?

• 43:07Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 43:07Speaker 03

And I was like, cool. Well, if it's one of your homies, then I'm sure it'd be fine. Like, what is it, Beyonce or something? And he goes, because he was looking for a discreet studio.

• 43:16Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 43:16Speaker 03

And I was like, I don't think there really are any.

• 43:18Jessie Ware?

No, because everyone's interested in this.

• 43:20Speaker 03

And he was like, well, can they come and use yours? And I said, well, you know. And it was Taylor Swift.

• 43:26Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 43:27Speaker 03

And she came down right at the end of Covid

• 43:32Speaker 03

and was the most phenomenal house guest, burnt a lot of vegetables for her. And she brought a killer candle, actually.

• 43:40Jessie Ware?

  I bet she bloody did.

• 43:41Speaker 03

She did. Her camp game was excellent. And she finished the second half of Evermore in our studio.

• 43:49Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 43:50Speaker 03

She's really sweet. And then she asked me to sing a one, and I said, yes.

• 43:53Jessie Ware?

  So it's got that Devon.

• 43:55Speaker 03

It's got a bit of that wholesome, that.

• 43:56Speaker 02

  Devon Creole, yeah.

• 43:58Speaker 03

  Um, but it's very sweet.

• 44:00Jessie Ware?

So let's talk, you're touring in the UK. Not next year, this is in, like, the UK run starts in December.

• 44:08Speaker 02

  December, we're going.

• 44:09Jessie Ware?

But you've already done the US, you've already done the US leg.

• 44:11Speaker 03

She has quite an invite, yeah.

• 44:13Jessie Ware?

What, I mean, this is obviously a national, everyone can listen to this podcast, but what's the London date? Just so I know.

• 44:18Speaker 03

  I think it's the 10th and the 11th at the O2.

• 44:20Jessie Ware?

Okay, amazing. Two nights, two nights.

• 44:23Speaker 03

Yeah. Yeah, we love that place.

• 44:26Jessie Ware?

I've always remembered, like, when you played Red Rocks and just thinking, like, that looks like.

• 44:30Speaker 03

We did that again this summer.

• 44:31Jessie Ware?

  Is it so beautiful?

• 44:32Speaker 03

We basically said, like, what are our favourite venues?

• 44:34Jessie Ware?

That's what you can do when you're big time, baby.

• 44:37Speaker 03

Like the gorge, Red Rocks, Hollywood Bowl.

• 44:41Jessie Ware?

  Amazing.

• 44:41Speaker 03

And O2 London is up there.

• 44:43Jessie Ware?

  Is it?

• 44:43Speaker 03

We love it, yeah. I really love that room. I think it's really good. It's a really good arena.

• 44:47Jessie Ware?

Before you go, nostalgic tastes that can transport you back somewhere, happy or sad.

• 44:53Speaker 03

Nostalgic tastes that transport me back.

• 44:57Speaker 02

  Or one taste or smell.

• 45:00Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 45:03Speaker 03

Hmm. You're gonna think I'm a one-trick pony here, but roast chicken, just to.

• 45:08Speaker 02

I love the smell of roast chicken.

• 45:10Speaker 03

  Very distinctive. Um.

• 45:12Speaker 02

Louis Theroux said, "Can you eat cat food?"

• 45:16Speaker 03

Oh, wait, yeah, that's pretty vivid as well.

• 45:18Speaker 02

And it took him three minutes to come out with that. He sat there waiting.

• 45:23Speaker 03

That's pretty good. Um, what else is nostalgic? Woodsmoke.

• 45:27Speaker 02

  Hmm.

• 45:29Speaker 03

Yeah, my wife and I met when we were kids, uh, at Bible camp. And there were a lot of fires. And then when we re-met in our twenties and fell in love, it was around a fire as well. And the first email she wrote me was, "I stink of woodsmoke." So woodsmoke is.

• 45:46Speaker 02

  Sweet. It's like her perfume.

• 45:49Speaker 03

  Yeah, I like it.

• 45:51Jessie Ware?

  That's very romantic.

• 45:52Speaker 03

So I like the time of the year where you are able to start lighting fires again. That's my jam.

• 45:56Speaker 02

So does Sam. I love this.

• 45:58Speaker 03

Whack on a jumper and light a fire. Let's go.

• 46:01Jessie Ware?

Uh, Marcus, you've been absolutely brilliant.

• 46:04Speaker 03

  I can't believe that food.

• 46:05Speaker 02

  Dream guest.

• 46:07Speaker 03

  Like, really, really good food.

• 46:09Speaker 02

  Delicious.

• 46:10Speaker 03

Thank you. I know you do this a lot, but like, would you say that was a good meal-wise, that was a good one?

• 46:16Speaker 02

Yeah, it was delicious. Yeah, I think that was a very good meal.

• 46:19Jessie Ware?

Thank you. Good luck with the tour. Good luck with the next record. And just like.

• 46:25Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 46:25Speaker 02

  Definitely.

• 46:26Jessie Ware?

  Thanks, babe.

• 46:42Jessie Ware?

Well, Marcus Mumford may have the most twinkly eyes I think I've ever seen in my life.

• 46:47Speaker 02

  What a handsome man.

• 46:48Jessie Ware?

  What a fabulous guest.

• 46:50Speaker 02

  Fabulous, fabulous.

• 46:51Jessie Ware?

  Appreciate the food.

• 46:52Speaker 02

  Like the food.

• 46:53Jessie Ware?

  Gave us all the answers.

• 46:54Speaker 02

Information I've never heard about before.

• 46:57Jessie Ware?

He was lovely. He's, he's always been nice, though. Whenever I've met him, he's lovely. Down to earth, gorgeous, kind, honest, open book.

• 47:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:05Jessie Ware?

  Big fan.

• 47:06Speaker 02

  Lovely, lovely man.

• 47:08Jessie Ware?

Can't wait to go and see him on tour.

• 47:09Speaker 02

  Invited me, Jessie, personally.

• 47:11Jessie Ware?

  Absolutely.

• 47:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:12Jessie Ware?

Prizefighter, Mumford and Sons' sixth record is out in February twenty twenty six. And the new single with Josie, Rubber Band Man, is out now. It's gorgeous. I'm sure they're all sold out the tour, but.

• 47:26Speaker 02

  I should think so.

• 47:27Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I'd say. But if you can go and see them, go and see them. And I will be trying that parenting technique about star jumps for brag. The bragging thing, I'm wondering, I know which one of Ryan would be getting all the star jumps. Which one? Number two?

• 47:41Speaker 02

  Does he brag?

• 47:42Jessie Ware?

Oh, he's a big bragger. He makes himself, but I like that.

• 47:45Speaker 02

But he deserves to brag. He's very clever.

• 47:48Jessie Ware?

Mum will be giving him more sweets.

• 47:49Speaker 02

I'll give him pussy pigs for bragging achievement.

• 47:53Jessie Ware?

  Pudding was gorge, Mum.

• 47:54Speaker 02

  Was it?

• 47:55Jessie Ware?

It was gorgeous. I ate all of it. It was lovely. And actually, I'm gonna go and have another.

• 47:59Speaker 02

Are you a fan of Quince now?

• 48:01Jessie Ware?

To be honest, I'm not mad about the consistency of it. It's a bit between a pear and an apple.

• 48:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:07Jessie Ware?

  More on the pear side.

• 48:09Speaker 02

  Kind of like the.

• 48:09Jessie Ware?

  But I like the taste.

• 48:10Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 48:11Jessie Ware?

So, yeah, I'll eat the quince.

• 48:13Speaker 02

  It's a bit grainy, isn't it?

• 48:15Jessie Ware?

It's a bit grainy, yeah. But it was delicious. And with the hazelnuts, it was just gorge.

• 48:19Speaker 02

  Judith Quince's.

• 48:21Jessie Ware?

Judith Ishorovitz, you are the best. You are the Quince queen. Thank you for listening and we'll see you next week.

• 48:57Speaker 04
