• 1:57Sean Fennessey?

  I'm Sean Fennessey.

• 1:58Amanda Dobbins?

  I'm Amanda Dobbins.

• 1:59Sean Fennessey?

And this is the Big Picture A Conversation Show about 1990. CR, Chris Ryan is here with us and we are drafting again. Hi, Chris.

• 2:06Speaker 03

  What's going on, guys?

• 2:07Sean Fennessey?

  How are you feeling?

• 2:08Speaker 03

I'm doing OK today. Yeah, sure.

• 2:10Sean Fennessey?

Are you ready to speak of your youth?

• 2:11Speaker 03

Oh, my God, am I ever? Aren't I always?

• 2:14Sean Fennessey?

Well, let's speak of Matt Damon's youth to start off. Because there's a small update on the Odyssey R today. Actually, Amanda made us aware of this update.

• 2:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 2:23Sean Fennessey?

Which is very exciting news, which is that Matt Damon is absolutely yoked out of his mind at the moment. And we're all wondering how.

• 2:32Speaker 03

I think it's just important to aspire to things. And it's important to have evidence that something good can happen. You know what I mean? We had it on Sunday with Rory. We have it today with Matt Damon getting completely yoked. He looks so good. I would honestly, I would trade it all for that body right now.

• 2:52Sean Fennessey?

  Trade?

• 2:52Amanda Dobbins?

  OK.

• 2:53Sean Fennessey?

  What does all encompass?

• 2:54Speaker 03

You know what? Make me an offer. Honestly, like, the phone is there. I like making deals.

• 3:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 3:03Speaker 03

  So let's, let's go.

• 3:04Amanda Dobbins?

How is your workout routine going in 2025?

• 3:08Speaker 03

It's really more about making sure that we carry no injuries into your dreaded golf trip. Like, we're about to have. I think Sean and I are both probably past the point where we think we're gonna get built up or get any better at golf before it. It's just about not being like, my back already hurts.

• 3:28Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 3:29Amanda Dobbins?

  OK.

• 3:29Speaker 03

  So like, I'm.

• 3:30Amanda Dobbins?

  Are you taking measures?

• 3:31Speaker 03

No, I'm stretching twice a day. 15 minutes, beginner.

• 3:35Amanda Dobbins?

OK, are you following along to a routine or is it self-directed?

• 3:38Speaker 03

Yeah, I watch a lady. And then like, I now have memorized all of the coffee shop trip hop that plays while she stretches.

• 3:43Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, absolutely. And like the little jokes that she makes, you know?

• 3:45Speaker 03

  She's completely silent.

• 3:46Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, really? Sometimes when I do repeat workout videos, I'm like, oh, this is when you're gonna talk about like the peanut butter and the jam or the grass-fed butter. You know, like, I've heard this before. OK, so you're stretching, you're walking on the treadmill.

• 3:58Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, and I've started playing golf again.

• 4:00Amanda Dobbins?

  Did we add incline?

• 4:02Sean Fennessey?

No, I'm not. I don't think that's necessary. I will be walking up hills on golf courses, and I think that will do me just fine for the next month. I'm in the same place as Chris. I'm getting strapped to that bed that Hannibal Lecter is in when they put him in the cage inside of the lambs every night so that I don't move at night, so that I don't wake up feeling like I've been shot.

• 4:19Amanda Dobbins?

So the Damon updates, the photo updates of Matt Damon shirtless on the set of The Odyssey are well timed for you guys. They prove that men of a certain age can achieve muscle tone.

• 4:31Speaker 03

  They're carved out of stone.

• 4:33Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, but can they do it the way that I do it? By cutting down trees and lifting logs with my bare hands without any supplemental help? Can they do that? I don't know. He looks good. He looks alarmingly good, given that he's going to be 55 years old in October.

• 4:47Speaker 03

I just want to, I think what I'm going to do is after this trip and after this last bit of physical exertion, I want to transition fully into John le Carré character, whose only physical exercise is a dip in a freezing cold pond to reawaken the senses.

• 5:03Amanda Dobbins?

That is, that actually, though, then you're just entering like another.

• 5:07Speaker 03

  Senior citizen age, yeah.

• 5:08Amanda Dobbins?

No, I mean, senior citizen age, but also like the cryo treatments and all of like the coldness.

• 5:14Speaker 03

But the cryo treatment is just jumping in Hampstead Pot.

• 5:16Amanda Dobbins?

No, I know, I know, but you are taking on anti-aging in a different way.

• 5:21Sean Fennessey?

George Smiley kind of presaged cold plunge, by the way you're saying. He kind of was, he was ahead of the curve on that one. In addition to being ahead of the curve, Ari Aster has a new movie coming out in July called Eddington. There was a teaser for this film this morning. Star-studded cast.

• 5:36Amanda Dobbins?

It took me a minute, but that was a good segue. Like, I had to catch up to the first phrase, but there you go.

• 5:41Sean Fennessey?

This is what I do. Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal.

• 5:47Amanda Dobbins?

  The internet.

• 5:48Sean Fennessey?

The internet. The whole teaser trailer was Joaquin Phoenix's sheriff character, a New Mexico area sheriff. Doom scrolling.

• 5:56Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 5:56Sean Fennessey?

During a pandemic, presumably the COVID-19 pandemic, that we can't say for sure. And I thought it was very funny, particularly the one shot of the little girl TikTok dancing with a line that said, I just finished reading Baldwin's Giovanni.

• 6:13Sean Fennessey?

Which is, I think I'm really hoping that this is just a very acidic, slightly mean spirited satire, making fun of everybody. And I hope it annoys people. That's really what I'm hoping for with this film.

• 6:23Speaker 03

Yeah, I think that there it will be very divisive, but I can't wait.

• 6:27Sean Fennessey?

Which side of the line do you think you'll end up on?

• 6:29Speaker 03

Whatever side Austin Butler's televangelist is on, I'm there.

• 6:33Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, strong shades of Tom Cruise in Magnolia from Austin Butler there. Any thoughts on the teaser?

• 6:39Amanda Dobbins?

I was amused. And I, am I ready for a COVID movie? I guess so.

• 6:44Sean Fennessey?

I think that's the question people are asking.

• 6:45Amanda Dobbins?

Five years later, and at first I was a little annoyed, but then I was like, okay, it's Ari Aster.

• 6:50Speaker 03

Five years later and it's settled science. We've taken care of it, you know?

• 6:55Amanda Dobbins?

No problems at all. Yeah, everything's rosy.

• 6:57Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 6:57Sean Fennessey?

Eddington 2 will be the vaccine story, which will be really exciting as well. There were, there have been COVID movies, you know, Locked Down starring Anne Hathaway and Chiu Talajefor.

• 7:06Speaker 03

We don't know, Eddington could be the name of the pangolin, you know?

• 7:08Sean Fennessey?

And it certainly could be. And you believe that that was the cause of the outbreak?

• 7:15Speaker 03

I was just saying, I mean, it's just like, we don't know.

• 7:17Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Any other thoughts in the world of movies? You mentioned Rory McIlroy. We had a fine time together, living and dying and living again with our Rory yesterday.

• 7:26Speaker 03

I gotta say, I found that to be more dramatic than any film I've seen in five years.

• 7:30Sean Fennessey?

  I fully agree.

• 7:31Amanda Dobbins?

Let me ask you something. Do you think that the overlap of listeners and people who are watching Rory yesterday is strong enough that you don't need to explain what happened?

• 7:40Sean Fennessey?

I think that there is a strong contingent of Irish Catholic men who, when I say Rory on a podcast, they know who I'm referring to.

• 7:46Amanda Dobbins?

I know your bros know. And like, we, we were living and dying by it in my house, but I'm just, you know, I'm trying to pitch a wider tent.

• 7:53Sean Fennessey?

Rory McIlroy, famed Northern Irish golfer, 35 years old, has gone now 14 years without a majors win. He's never won the Masters before. He is seeking the Grand Slam, where he won, would win all four, the career Grand Slam, where he went all four golf majors. He has come close many times and has been stymied many times. He is a Sisyphean character, you know, he really is just constantly getting right up to the top and then falling down the hill and. He did it. He did it yesterday.

• 8:25Speaker 03

He was, it was like watching a woman under the influence yesterday. It was just like watching a man fall apart, put himself back together. He cried. He hurt his back. He like got slow played to death by Bryson. It was so, so much drama.

• 8:42Amanda Dobbins?

Also, the energy in the room with the three of you. So you two and my husband watched the whole thing together. I was, I was in charge of childcare along with the women in your lives.

• 8:52Speaker 03

You make it sound like an Amish community.

• 8:54Sean Fennessey?

  Three kids, like nine adults.

• 8:56Amanda Dobbins?

I'm just gonna be real. The division of labor was, was noted yesterday. But we walked in, I guess, after, before the playoff because there was a playoff.

• 9:07Speaker 03

Yeah, we were, we were trying to figure out whether you were gonna show up at the exact.

• 9:11Sean Fennessey?

I wasn't really worried about it. Your husband was the one who was worried about it.

• 9:15Amanda Dobbins?

I tried to get him to take our child to the bathroom at like an opportune moment. And, but I just, the energy of the three of you in the room was, I mean, was deeply horrifying.

• 9:29Speaker 03

Yeah, it's not really what you come to us for.

• 9:30Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, no, I'm trying to think of like a movie experience that is, is comparable.

• 9:36Speaker 03

The end of Glengarry Glen Ross.

• 9:37Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I was, I was thinking of like any of, yes. Any of the Barry Levinson movies my dad loves so much.

• 9:44Sean Fennessey?

I felt very good about it. I was very happy to have that moment with, with Chris and Zach. We've, it was very much like watching a movie because of the ups and downs. It really had a three act structure where there was like an inciting incident on the first hole. It was like very upsetting. Um, yes, there was, there was a kind of epilogue to the story. It's over now. I'm very happy for Rory. I'm very curious to see if he rips off five or six more major, majors wins or he now.

• 10:06Speaker 03

  I'd retire personally.

• 10:07Sean Fennessey?

  You would. Interesting.

• 10:08Speaker 03

I would just be like, this is done.

• 10:10Sean Fennessey?

You're in a really like a retired state of mind right now.

• 10:12Speaker 03

Well, cause I'm thinking about cold plunges and stuff.

• 10:14Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 10:15Speaker 03

I just think if I was Rory, it would be like, I, I would, I would take a beat. I would just be like, now it's time to really spend time.

• 10:20Amanda Dobbins?

  He is only 35.

• 10:21Speaker 03

  With Poppy.

• 10:22Amanda Dobbins?

  So.

• 10:22Speaker 03

  It's old for golf.

• 10:23Sean Fennessey?

I gotta say, when he hugged his daughter, I was like, this is it, man.

• 10:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 10:27Sean Fennessey?

  This is it.

• 10:27Speaker 03

I thought that way when he hugged his agent. I was just like, you love to see representation crossover into the personal.

• 10:33Sean Fennessey?

  It really does matter.

• 10:34Speaker 03

How I feel about my team, all my guys.

• 10:37Sean Fennessey?

Bob, I know you're not a supporter of the PGA. Unfortunately, one of your key flaws.

• 10:41Speaker 03

  No, cause he's.

• 10:41Sean Fennessey?

  Did you watch the Masters?

• 10:42Speaker 03

  Team live.

• 10:42Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 10:43Speaker 04

I'm not. Yeah, I'm Team Liv. That's right. No, I've just never gotten into golf, really. I mean, I would find it too frustrating to play personally because I blame too many things on myself and I just couldn't get over that hurdle, number one.

• 10:54Speaker 03

No, the whole thing is you gotta, you have a bad swing and then you blame the planet Earth for being shaped the way it is.

• 11:00Sean Fennessey?

  Or the club.

• 11:00Speaker 04

Yeah. I was under the impression that you have a bad swing and then you go to YouTube and get red-pilled by like 18 different guys for 40 hours.

• 11:08Speaker 03

I could either confirm or deny when I watch on YouTube.

• 11:12Sean Fennessey?

That was Chris roughly 2013 through present. How, is actually, is your YouTube pilling because of golf? Like, is that really where it started?

• 11:22Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 11:23Sean Fennessey?

  That's so interesting.

• 11:25Amanda Dobbins?

  Your Instagram as well?

• 11:26Speaker 03

My Instagram has now become much more diversified, but like, I think that...

• 11:29Amanda Dobbins?

You have all the women preparing things with AI, so yeah, I know.

• 11:34Sean Fennessey?

  What are those women wearing?

• 11:36Speaker 03

No, they're never on camera. They're just like, this is what I do after a long day.

• 11:43Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 11:44Speaker 03

I hate being in the middle for these.

• 11:47Sean Fennessey?

Coming at you from both sides. 1990, let's talk about it. We're drafting movies from 1990, a fascinating year in many directions. A handful of masterpieces, a very fun year, a ton of movies from great filmmakers, even if they're not the number one movies from those filmmakers. Very interesting time in Hollywood history. Amanda, I'll start with you. 1990, what was cooking in your life in Georgia?

• 12:09Amanda Dobbins?

I turned six years old, so I was, I know, I was trying to think about like where I actually was. I think that this was in the Coke bottle glasses face.

• 12:17Speaker 03

  Unbelievable.

• 12:18Amanda Dobbins?

I don't know if we had gotten to like the page boy haircut yet, but I'll try to find some.

• 12:23Sean Fennessey?

Whose call was that, that look? Was that something like, "Mom, I want this"?

• 12:27Amanda Dobbins?

It's hard to say. It might have been mine. Yeah, the glasses were mine. Uh, I, you know, I remember I went to Lens Crafters and picked them out like, I don't know what to tell you.

• 12:38Sean Fennessey?

  These are for me?

• 12:38Amanda Dobbins?

  These are the ones, yeah.

• 12:39Speaker 03

But you had like, there were a lot of like, ophthalmological reasons you needed certain glasses.

• 12:45Amanda Dobbins?

Oh no, I definitely needed glasses. This was also my second run with glasses because when I was like three, both, my parents both wore glasses and I said to them, hey, I need glasses because I wanted to, you know, do what the grownups were doing. And so then when I actually did need glasses, I went to them and I said, hey, I need glasses and no one believed me. So I had to like stage and elaborate.

• 13:06Sean Fennessey?

The blind girl who cried wolf.

• 13:07Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, there you go. But no, there was like, literally they, I made them give me a, like a home eye test, you know, but even, but, but then there was some-

• 13:15Sean Fennessey?

Must have been really cool to raise you. It must have been really interesting.

• 13:19Amanda Dobbins?

You're getting a look at it every day, buddy. Um, so yeah, I, dance, I would say was a passion.

• 13:26Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 13:27Amanda Dobbins?

  And Nickelodeon and-

• 13:31Sean Fennessey?

Modern dance or like hip hop?

• 13:32Amanda Dobbins?

You know, I took it all. Uh, well, I guess I didn't take hip hop sadly, but-

• 13:36Sean Fennessey?

We know tap. You're a gifted tap dancer.

• 13:38Amanda Dobbins?

Definitely modern dance because I studied with Lee Vason, who was our, like our family friend, but also a modern dancer. She danced with Alvin Ailey.

• 13:47Sean Fennessey?

  Wow.

• 13:47Amanda Dobbins?

And so she taught modern as well.

• 13:50Sean Fennessey?

  Must be nice.

• 13:50Amanda Dobbins?

Some ballet. Yeah, there you go.

• 13:52Speaker 03

I think of you as a good dancer, but not like a frequent dancer.

• 13:55Amanda Dobbins?

Um, that's because we don't, we don't go out anymore, you know? Like you didn't come to Vegas, so we didn't hit the club.

• 14:01Speaker 03

Oh, would you think I would have-

• 14:02Sean Fennessey?

  That's not why you didn't.

• 14:05Sean Fennessey?

Uh, okay. I, I've, I mean, Amanda has helped teach my daughter how to dance. Very gifted. Uh, 1990, what was going on with you?

• 14:12Speaker 03

13, uh, turning 13 really into the burgeoning native tongues movement and rap. So I had that going for me. Uh, a moment where I think a bunch of different parts of pop culture were like lining up, where like I was going to see Spike Lee movies and listening to Tribe and it sounds like a very like exciting, informative time, like just outside of a movie theater. Uh, the crazy thing about this is like, I can't remember how many of these I saw in the movies, but going through the list of films released this year was pretty easy to be like, I remember 65 of these and I can't remember how many of them are just like, oh, and then I watched Tremors 700 times over five years. But that's, this is like a real vertebrae

• 14:55Speaker 03

in my movie watching life is 1990. I don't have like any, I mean, we can get into like- The bat mitzvahs that I attended, if you wanted to.

• 15:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 15:03Sean Fennessey?

  Please.

• 15:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Memorable themes. Go.

• 15:05Speaker 03

No, I don't remember themes. I remember Parker Lewis can't lose was a big, big fashion influence on, on guys back then. So the rayon shirts buttoned all the way up.

• 15:14Sean Fennessey?

Did you have a kind of a hair energy in that direction too?

• 15:16Speaker 03

  Once upon a time. Yeah.

• 15:19Sean Fennessey?

At that time, you had kind of a corinemic color.

• 15:22Speaker 03

I used to rock, uh, what was the Aussie? Remember the Aussie kind of shampoo?

• 15:28Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, like the purple with the pink? Yeah. No, I know what you're talking about.

• 15:31Speaker 03

So they had a hair gel that was real popular on moose, you know?

• 15:34Sean Fennessey?

  Moose?

• 15:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:35Sean Fennessey?

  No kidding.

• 15:36Speaker 03

  Uh, and then.

• 15:37Sean Fennessey?

  You were looking for volume.

• 15:39Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 15:39Amanda Dobbins?

You're not using a moose now? What is it? Puma?

• 15:42Sean Fennessey?

Just the teak, the Japanese teak. It's like a very.

• 15:45Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, like a sort of like a wax.

• 15:47Speaker 03

You think that's gonna go up in price pretty soon?

• 15:49Sean Fennessey?

Because of the tariffs. It's actually, there's just a teak tariff that has been issued recently, which is unfortunate.

• 15:54Speaker 03

He might be like, I need that, you know?

• 15:56Sean Fennessey?

Uh, I think he's au naturel at this point, right?

• 15:58Speaker 03

You don't think he uses any product?

• 16:00Sean Fennessey?

  Um, I think it's, it's a rug, right? So.

• 16:02Speaker 03

  Trump?

• 16:03Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 16:03Speaker 03

I thought Trump had like one strand of hair that he has had, like grows like longer than like crystal gale and then like wraps it around a bunch of times. But I could be wrong.

• 16:13Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, could be. Yeah. You should keep talking about it.

• 16:16Speaker 03

What, am I gonna get disappeared?

• 16:19Sean Fennessey?

  Maybe, I don't know.

• 16:19Speaker 03

Pam body, if you have a problem with me speculating about Trump's hair.

• 16:23Sean Fennessey?

  Wow, you're invoking her name.

• 16:25Speaker 03

  Sure. Yeah.

• 16:26Sean Fennessey?

What about Kristi Noem? Where are you at on her right now?

• 16:28Speaker 03

I'm, I'm more focused on Pam. She seems like, she seems like.

• 16:31Amanda Dobbins?

That's the one who shot her dog?

• 16:33Speaker 03

  Christie did.

• 16:33Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. Yeah. And then I'm other things. Yeah.

• 16:37Sean Fennessey?

Very JMO coded episode so far.

• 16:40Speaker 03

This is the power of Eddington.

• 16:42Sean Fennessey?

It truly, Ari's got us spun.

• 16:44Amanda Dobbins?

To his point about having seen just like a very high count of watched movies this year, I felt that way as well. And again, I was like five turning six. So I wasn't like seeing all of these movies in theaters. But for whatever reason, a lot of them crept into the, I guess, like now I'm 10 and someone's gonna show this to me or I'll rewatch it.

• 17:04Speaker 03

I've been listening to all of your state of cinema pods over the last couple of weeks, coming out of CinemaCon and, and out of Minecraft's triumph and. And everything else.

• 17:13Sean Fennessey?

Still, still cooking this past weekend. Are you there? I was, I didn't attend again. That was the Christmas adventure, but I made a lot of money.

• 17:20Speaker 03

Um, and, uh, one of the things that really jumped out at me was just talking about like the need for volume, the need for like filling the shelves.

• 17:29Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

And this is why, like, if you look at this movie year, there is so much, so much of like a multiplicity of experiences you could have had. Obviously, we can get into whether or not they were making movies more for adults back then. And there was something to like, kind of, if you were a kid aspire to, but

• 17:43Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 17:44Speaker 03

The thing that just blows my mind is just the sheer amount of movies released this year and how, how great that is for a thriving cinema culture to have like so much optionality and so much, so many things that can have like revivals and go through like kind of different eras of its appreciation and fandom of it.

• 18:01Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, no, I know what you mean. Um, I was eight years old in 1990 and so for me at this time, Home Alone was Yeah. Casablanca. It was The Wizard of Oz. It was the most important thing that had ever happened in movies and everyone went to go see it. You know, Macaulay Culkin is essentially an eight-year-old boy in the movie.

• 18:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 18:21Sean Fennessey?

  Um.

• 18:22Speaker 03

  You saw yourself.

• 18:23Sean Fennessey?

  I, I, I, I recognized mischief.

• 18:25Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 18:25Sean Fennessey?

And I said, thank you for your work. Um, but, you know, that's from a very distinct perspective of an eight-year-old boy who's kind of falling in love with movies. Right. But at the same time, there are all of these, there are really a number of totemic movies this year. Um, some movies that you could argue are kind of the pinnacle of the kind of movie that they are. Well, they'll get drafted, I'm sure, and we'll talk about them at length here. But, um, just looking like four or five movies here that are strictly movies from my parents that I know that they went and saw opening weekend and that seemed like they dominated their lives that sort of like launched people or reignited people's careers or, I don't know, created just like a really incredible energy around them.

• 19:07Sean Fennessey?

And then the other thing that I noticed and I, I added this as a category this morning because there's a number of sequels this year, some of which are very interesting, some of which are very much cash-ins. And the balance between the interesting ones, the more legacy ones and the cash-ins is quite fascinating to me. Um, I don't know if I really remember the kind of person that I was when I was eight years old.

• 19:27Speaker 03

That's kind of hard. Well, she did. She remembered herself at six.

• 19:30Sean Fennessey?

My interests. Amanda's always known herself very well. Yeah. It's one of her great skills. Thank you.

• 19:35Speaker 03

  You're welcome.

• 19:38Sean Fennessey?

Movie wise, otherwise, you know, the same as all these other years. This is the last year of the 1990s.

• 19:43Speaker 03

  For us to draft?

• 19:44Sean Fennessey?

For us to draft. We only have one more year left in the 2000s, which I'm happy to say we'll do in June. And we'll make it a mega draft.

• 19:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, right.

• 19:51Sean Fennessey?

And then that will be every single year from

• 19:55Speaker 03

  We stop drafting.

• 19:55Sean Fennessey?

1990 through 2022, or 2021, we will have drafted from.

• 20:01Amanda Dobbins?

And we can do 2022 in December of this year?

• 20:04Sean Fennessey?

  That's right.

• 20:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 20:05Sean Fennessey?

  And then

• 20:07Speaker 03

Which is a rule you knew.

• 20:09Sean Fennessey?

Well, it's overtime. We've learned it.

• 20:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:12Sean Fennessey?

And yeah, and then, then what do we do?

• 20:15Speaker 03

We start doing silent films. We start drafting the works of Murnau.

• 20:20Sean Fennessey?

That honestly sounds great. I would love to do that. Any other thoughts on the, on the year before we get into some of the details? I don't want to give away too, I mean, this is a legendary Oscar year for all the wrong reasons.

• 20:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 20:33Sean Fennessey?

Dances with Wolves won Best Picture this year. I'm quite curious to see if Dances with Wolves is drafted today.

• 20:39Speaker 03

Just an astonishing amount of movie stars who are still stars. People who are still in leading films, starring, leading their own TV shows now. I probably speaks to the gentocracy of, of American culture in general, but I can't believe how many people were like minted in this year and continue to be pretty huge figures.

• 21:02Speaker 03

I do think it's interesting to go back and look and see how many projects are being like launched or supported by a star who just obviously has like a real creative itch they want to scratch. And, you know, this is a moment right before, you know, another wave of like the Jurassic Park kind of blockbuster stuff. So you do get films that are, you know, basically being sold on the back of, of Meryl Streep's participation in them, but it's like a small, they're small movies. They're small human stories. So it's a really cool moment in film, you know, like not quite. Sundance crazy.

• 21:39Sean Fennessey?

  Mm hmm.

• 21:39Speaker 03

It's sort of like a, like a really awesome Hollywood year.

• 21:43Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, well put. I think the, the bulk of the films that we talk about today will either be pure Hollywood or I, there's a really interesting contingent of international movies that are released in this year. A couple of like old masters, a couple of kind of rising voices in European cinema that might get a shout out too. There's also one really big, fat, notable international film that we almost never talk about on the show, but I'll be curious to see if it comes up here today too. Uh, anything else? Before we set our draft order and talk about categories?

• 22:14Speaker 03

So we're just doing an extra category a day of sequels.

• 22:17Sean Fennessey?

Seven categories total. We've got our classics, drama, comedy, action, horror, thriller, Oscar nominee. We've added sequel plus blockbuster. I set the threshold at 75 million because in 1991, we set it for 75 million. So that seemed to be around the area where you'd say this movie was a hit and then wild card. So we've got 14 eligible movies in box office. Pretty interesting collection of Oscar nominees. You really gotta go down the.

• 22:43Speaker 03

  Controversial Oscars here.

• 22:45Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, but because of the best picture, best director win.

• 22:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 22:49Sean Fennessey?

Not the best outcome, was a cla- very classic Billy Crystal Oscars. I remember this one. I remember watching it as a kid with my parents. Um, I think that's pretty much it. Bob, any reflections on 1990? You were how old?

• 23:02Speaker 04

I was a good old negative six.

• 23:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 23:05Speaker 04

  Sheesh.

• 23:05Speaker 03

Who won the World Series in 90?

• 23:07Speaker 04

I was just wondering about that because I, I don't.

• 23:08Speaker 03

  The Twins won in 91.

• 23:10Sean Fennessey?

  Was it the Reds?

• 23:11Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 23:11Speaker 03

  Oh, Eric Davis.

• 23:12Speaker 04

  Let's see.

• 23:13Speaker 03

  Chris Sabo?

• 23:14Speaker 04

  Let's see.

• 23:16Speaker 04

  It was the Reds.

• 23:17Amanda Dobbins?

How does this podcast always turn into you just like naming Cincinnati Reds teams? Like this is not, it's literally Cincinnati Reds always.

• 23:24Sean Fennessey?

I don't know why I remember that, but boy, I was watching a lot of baseball in 1990.

• 23:27Speaker 04

They snuck it in right between the A's and the Twins. Much more memorable World Series wins.

• 23:32Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, that, this was, this was Barry Larkin time when he was in the center of baseball.

• 23:36Speaker 04

  God, he was so cool.

• 23:37Sean Fennessey?

  He was awesome. Yeah.

• 23:38Speaker 04

  So cool.

• 23:39Sean Fennessey?

You know what the best thing ever when you're podcasting is just saying baseball players' names? That's the, that's literally the best podcasting you can do. There's, there's nothing.

• 23:47Amanda Dobbins?

  How are the Mets doing?

• 23:48Sean Fennessey?

  They're 10 and 5 and they're in first place.

• 23:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 23:50Sean Fennessey?

So we actually have not played well at all and we're in first place.

• 23:54Amanda Dobbins?

  In the East.

• 23:55Speaker 03

  The NL East.

• 23:56Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. What happened to the Phils?

• 23:58Speaker 03

  They're doing okay.

• 23:59Sean Fennessey?

  They're doing.

• 23:59Amanda Dobbins?

I've been watching some, but you know.

• 24:01Sean Fennessey?

  It's been, it's been fine.

• 24:02Speaker 03

I think it's like, I think Phillies fans are having a little bit of like, uh, I've, I've watched these, this like basically this core for several years now. And so maybe they're starting to pick at them a little harder.

• 24:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 24:14Sean Fennessey?

You're in that phase where they're all in their 30s.

• 24:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:16Sean Fennessey?

  All the key guys.

• 24:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:18Sean Fennessey?

It's tricky. They're still good though. I think they're, I think the Phillies are gonna be a real, it's gonna be a hard race. I was asking Chris, are the Braves dead over the weekend?

• 24:25Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 24:25Speaker 03

  Hope so.

• 24:26Sean Fennessey?

  There, I hope so too.

• 24:26Amanda Dobbins?

Doesn't matter to me. As I've said.

• 24:30Sean Fennessey?

  Bob, any early Mets reflections?

• 24:32Speaker 04

Love the Mets. Love this team. Having a lot of fun watching them. I would like to say that I will not be satisfied as a man until the Braves are like four and 40.

• 24:41Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 24:42Speaker 04

And they're four and 11 right now, and that's not good enough for me.

• 24:44Speaker 03

Four and 40 would be like dead cat bounce and like then they have like this crazy good second half of the season.

• 24:49Sean Fennessey?

  Kuna goes 70 and 70. That's a rum really.

• 24:51Speaker 03

Profar gets like let out of PED jail and.

• 24:54Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. I would not only like to bury them in the ground, I'd like to like build a monument on top of that burial.

• 25:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 25:01Speaker 04

  As well.

• 25:01Speaker 03

It's like nuclear waste. You can't go too far down.

• 25:04Sean Fennessey?

We are aligned. Pretty much. They are the Chernobyl of Major League Baseball. Uh, okay. Let's pivot onto the draft. We have to set a draft order. Robert, can you help us out with that?

• 25:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:13Speaker 03

  Top Gun hat back.

• 25:14Speaker 04

Top Gun hat. There it is. Upside down.

• 25:18Amanda Dobbins?

I just got really hungry. I should have.

• 25:20Sean Fennessey?

  Great timing.

• 25:21Amanda Dobbins?

  I know.

• 25:22Speaker 03

Will you, do you have M M's?

• 25:23Amanda Dobbins?

  No, cause we're saving those.

• 25:25Sean Fennessey?

Bar that I could give you.

• 25:25Amanda Dobbins?

No, I don't eat, I don't eat bar. Oh, Chris, number one. Interesting.

• 25:28Speaker 04

  Chris going first.

• 25:29Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 25:29Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 25:29Sean Fennessey?

Okay. We know where that's going.

• 25:31Speaker 03

I haven't had first in a while, by the way.

• 25:32Sean Fennessey?

I, that's true. You haven't. I was thinking about that the other day. Cause I had it a bunch and then Amanda before me had it a bunch.

• 25:37Amanda Dobbins?

I think I know what's gonna happen, but potential for a real CR classic. Oh, me second?

• 25:41Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 25:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 25:42Speaker 04

On the next Amanda Dobbins and Sean.

• 25:45Sean Fennessey?

I'm on the turn. Intriguing, intriguing, intriguing. So Chris.

• 25:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 25:51Sean Fennessey?

  First pick here.

• 25:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 25:53Sean Fennessey?

  There.

• 25:53Speaker 03

Don't have to think about it.

• 25:54Sean Fennessey?

This is, this should be the easiest pick of all time.

• 25:57Speaker 03

I'm gonna, I'm gonna right a historical wrong and I will take Goodfellas and Oscar nom.

• 26:02Sean Fennessey?

  Oh.

• 26:02Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 26:03Sean Fennessey?

  Very healthy for you.

• 26:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Delete.

• 26:04Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 26:06Sean Fennessey?

  Goodfellas eligible in every category.

• 26:09Speaker 03

So yeah, Goodfellas, you could say Goodfellas is a comedy, you could say Goodfellas is a thriller, you could say Goodfellas is a drama. There's more than one fella, it could be a sequel, you know?

• 26:21Sean Fennessey?

  Sure. Definitely.

• 26:23Speaker 03

No, I, this is one of my favorite movies ever made, Martin Scorsese's epic, darkly comic look at the rise and fall of the American mob. And we just showed it at Coolidge Corner for the Rewatchables Film Festival. It is still note perfect and amazing and hilarious and terrifying. I wish I had some new insight to give into Goodfellas, other than, what do you say about one of your favorite movies? That you've talked about a lot?

• 26:51Sean Fennessey?

Well, yeah, the fact that you've podcasted about it for like seven total hours.

• 26:55Amanda Dobbins?

Did you, did you see it in 1990?

• 26:57Speaker 03

I saw it on video shortly after that. I did not see it in the theater.

• 27:00Amanda Dobbins?

Like with parents or was it unsanctioned?

• 27:02Speaker 03

I think that the parents were adjacent, but I remember this being a really, really, really big deal for my dad. Like he loved this movie. If I, you know, I could be proven wrong by his review, which might've been like a bit long.

• 27:15Sean Fennessey?

  A middling effort from Martin.

• 27:16Speaker 03

Quite profane. But yeah, I just, this is, this is like one of the all time classics, so it's an easy first pick.

• 27:23Sean Fennessey?

This is an interesting one, because if you want to think about it contextually, him losing the Academy Award, both directing and best picture is quite fascinating. You know, Nolan just won Oppenheimer at a very similar plate time in his career to where Scorsese was when he made Goodfellas. You know, roughly 20 years after he began. And having kind of like scaled the mountain, Nolan has never really had the kind of downfall that Scorsese had, but you know, kind of pilloried in the press and couldn't get The Last Temptation of Christ made the first time around. And making small movies that didn't do well, King of Comedy being considered a huge flop. And so he has this like comeback narrative with Goodfellas, which is financially successful, critically adored, feels like the apotheosis of this kind of a movie, and he still doesn't win.

• 28:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 28:07Sean Fennessey?

And he has to wait another 16 years to win. And obviously, I think I talked about this maybe a little bit on Goodfellas, but just like the New York-ness of Scorsese in this movie in particular, I think was sort of held against him at a time when the Oscars were a bit more provincial, I would say.

• 28:22Amanda Dobbins?

Right. Eighty-nine is when Driving Miss Daisy wins over Do the Right Thing, right? And then Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas.

• 28:30Sean Fennessey?

  A nightmare.

• 28:30Amanda Dobbins?

A back to back. It's tough.

• 28:32Sean Fennessey?

Dances with Wolves is an interesting one. I can say maybe my thoughts in general, if it comes up again in drafting.

• 28:38Amanda Dobbins?

  For when you draft it?

• 28:39Sean Fennessey?

Probably not going to be one I'm gonna draft, but it might be. It's just, it's one of those, it's not a bad movie. It's not like Driving Miss Daisy, or there's something kind of offensive about it. It's actually, in revisiting it for the Horizon conversation, I think, pretty sensitive, in terms of its depiction of native people and the story that it's trying to tell. It centers a white guy, obviously, but it's not like offensive in the way that we come to expect from movies like that. It's just not Goodfellas.

• 29:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 29:04Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, Amanda.

• 29:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 29:06Sean Fennessey?

You want to share any Goodfellas thoughts?

• 29:08Amanda Dobbins?

I like it very much, and I also, yes, I would have.

• 29:11Sean Fennessey?

Would you have taken it first overall?

• 29:12Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, of course. I mean, yeah, come on, because it's...

• 29:14Sean Fennessey?

But that would have meant not getting something that I know is important to you.

• 29:17Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I think so. I think if I had had the first pick, I would have done it anyway and hoped that you didn't take revenge on me.

• 29:27Sean Fennessey?

That always goes well for us, yeah. It would have been really hard to turn it down, what I presume you're taking now.

• 29:31Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. I mean, I think so as well. So I will, an Oscar nominee, take Pretty Woman.

• 29:35Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 29:36Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. Is that not what you thought I was gonna take?

• 29:38Sean Fennessey?

That's what I thought you were gonna do. That's definitely the movie. I wasn't sure what category.

• 29:40Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Probably, well, no. When Harry Met Sally in 1989 is my number one romantic comedy of all time, but I think Pretty Woman might be number two.

• 29:54Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 29:55Amanda Dobbins?

It's just perfect. And obviously also launches one of my favorite movie stars, Julia Roberts. Like, seismically, culturally important. I don't think that I was allowed to see this in 1990, because again, it is about a sex worker, as we would now say.

• 30:11Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 30:13Amanda Dobbins?

  You know, fallen in love.

• 30:15Sean Fennessey?

You think we should go back to horror?

• 30:16Amanda Dobbins?

No, I just, I'm not using the terminology of the movie. I'm using the terminology of the present day.

• 30:23Sean Fennessey?

  Got it.

• 30:24Amanda Dobbins?

  I'm not using-

• 30:25Sean Fennessey?

  Streetwalker, would that be better?

• 30:26Amanda Dobbins?

  It's not what, um-

• 30:27Sean Fennessey?

  Lady of the Night?

• 30:28Amanda Dobbins?

Jason Alexander calls her in the film, for example, you know?

• 30:31Sean Fennessey?

I don't remember what he calls her.

• 30:32Amanda Dobbins?

Um, I think he just likes like, she's a hooker, you know, like, anyway. I was-

• 30:39Sean Fennessey?

What do you think, Chris? You think we should go back?

• 30:43Speaker 03

To using those words about, no.

• 30:45Sean Fennessey?

Etymologically, you don't think they're more accurate?

• 30:47Speaker 03

I, Sean Baker points the way, you know?

• 30:49Sean Fennessey?

  Good. I agree.

• 30:50Amanda Dobbins?

I was internet shopping to avoid the world the, earlier today, and then there was a brown polka dot dress. And I was like, oh, so should I like do the Pretty Woman dress? Should I, you know?

• 31:01Sean Fennessey?

  For this episode?

• 31:03Amanda Dobbins?

No, for a wedding that I'm going to.

• 31:06Speaker 03

  That's fun.

• 31:06Amanda Dobbins?

And it's a, I, I don't know whether it'll suit me. And then also it's a wedding of, um, it's a cousin's wedding. Hello, Isaac and Sammy, I'm excited. But they're younger, so I'm like, are they gonna get the reference?

• 31:16Speaker 03

  Probably not.

• 31:17Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, yeah, that's also what I thought.

• 31:18Sean Fennessey?

They might have other things on their mind that day.

• 31:21Amanda Dobbins?

  I meant the other people.

• 31:22Speaker 03

What a deep pull from Amanda.

• 31:24Sean Fennessey?

Wow, did you see Amanda's Pretty Woman dress? When we were getting married?

• 31:27Amanda Dobbins?

The couple, I meant everybody else at the wedding, who's like 23. Okay. You guys are really fun to talk to about this. Pretty Woman is a wonderful film.

• 31:36Sean Fennessey?

Uh, it is good. Who directed it? Gary Marshall?

• 31:38Amanda Dobbins?

Yes. Starring Julia Robertson and Richard Gere.

• 31:41Speaker 03

Gary Marshall never got his Oscar.

• 31:44Sean Fennessey?

You know, he made a couple of classics, stone cold classics, and then a lot of movies called like Valentine's Day?

• 31:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:49Sean Fennessey?

And then like Arbor Day and a bunch of other days.

• 31:51Speaker 03

That was such a strange moment in Hollywood. They were like, we got these holidays sitting right here. How are we not making movies about them?

• 31:58Sean Fennessey?

We don't have to pay for this at all.

• 32:00Speaker 03

Isn't Bradley Cooper in one of those?

• 32:02Sean Fennessey?

He is. I believe he's in Valentine's Day. Is he in Valentine's Day?

• 32:05Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, they all are. They're terrible.

• 32:08Sean Fennessey?

Gary Marshall, obviously a titan of television, helped develop Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, a number of other shows.

• 32:15Sean Fennessey?

  Pretty Woman is good.

• 32:18Sean Fennessey?

It's very good. I would have drafted it.

• 32:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 32:19Sean Fennessey?

  First?

• 32:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Would you have taken-

• 32:21Sean Fennessey?

  Not first, no.

• 32:22Amanda Dobbins?

Had I, but, so- I have first pick Goodfellas. He takes something else.

• 32:29Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 32:30Speaker 03

  A boy movie?

• 32:30Amanda Dobbins?

And then, no, no, no, no, something that I, I don't want to say because I don't want to spoil anything. And then you have two picks. Would you have taken Pretty Woman if I had Goodfellas?

• 32:38Sean Fennessey?

I think both from a quality perspective and a strategic perspective.

• 32:41Speaker 03

We haven't had a, a knife to the heart on one of these drafts in a while.

• 32:46Sean Fennessey?

Got to get Rob back soon, you know, Rob is the one.

• 32:49Speaker 03

  Yeah, Rob does not care.

• 32:50Sean Fennessey?

  Rob is the key holder.

• 32:51Amanda Dobbins?

Rob came on Jam Session, it was very peaceful and wanted to talk about, uh, Girlboss is going to space.

• 32:56Sean Fennessey?

Were there any competitive elements to that episode of Jam Session?

• 32:59Speaker 03

Were you pro that Blue Origin?

• 33:00Amanda Dobbins?

No, I'm, I'm wildly against it and Yasi and I will be dealing with it on Jam Session tomorrow.

• 33:04Sean Fennessey?

  What is the issue?

• 33:05Amanda Dobbins?

  When the, when all the...

• 33:06Speaker 03

Lauren Sanchez and Katy Perry going into space?

• 33:08Amanda Dobbins?

  And Gayle King.

• 33:09Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, right, yeah.

• 33:10Amanda Dobbins?

  They all went to space.

• 33:11Sean Fennessey?

I was invited, I turned them down. Said, no, thank you.

• 33:15Speaker 03

  The one guy.

• 33:18Sean Fennessey?

I'm an ally. Even in space, I can be an ally.

• 33:22Speaker 03

What do you guys call prostitutes?

• 33:25Sean Fennessey?

  Man, it has a lot.

• 33:26Speaker 03

Making small talk here on the landing pad.

• 33:29Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, okay.

• 33:31Speaker 03

  You get two here, bud.

• 33:31Sean Fennessey?

  Two picks, two picks.

• 33:33Speaker 03

What kind of damage can you do?

• 33:35Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 33:36Speaker 03

  The wrecking ball.

• 33:38Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I mean, I think there's a big one for you that I, I don't think I want to take away, that I don't think is necessary to take away at this stage.

• 33:45Speaker 03

  Don't be like that.

• 33:45Sean Fennessey?

Because I got to get, I mean, you came in here with like a little, a little teardrop in your throat and I want to, I got your back today.

• 33:50Speaker 03

I just, my voice is just tired for some reason already, but you, you don't have to worry about my, I have the fortitude.

• 33:55Sean Fennessey?

  See this right here?

• 33:56Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 33:56Sean Fennessey?

These are wings you can get on top of. I'll fly you all the way home.

• 34:00Amanda Dobbins?

Never says that to me, just so you know. Even when he like gives me something, he's like, fine, you can have it. Like, I mean...

• 34:06Sean Fennessey?

Maybe if you shared the same vulnerability that Chris showed me this morning.

• 34:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 34:10Sean Fennessey?

If you opened up and said, you know, it's been a tough day, what I need from you is love and support.

• 34:15Speaker 03

She was shopping to avoid the world.

• 34:18Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, the world. I was...

• 34:20Sean Fennessey?

I'm not sure if I would define that as vulnerability.

• 34:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 34:22Sean Fennessey?

You were, you were like, I'm on my wedding game, right?

• 34:26Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I do need a dress, but, but, you know, it's fine. I'll, I'll get one later.

• 34:30Sean Fennessey?

  You didn't find one?

• 34:31Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I didn't.

• 34:31Sean Fennessey?

  Where's, what's your first stop?

• 34:34Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, this is a real issue with tariffs. I know, like, and a bunch of, I had a lot of, you know, there's like Net-a-Porter and My Theresa and all these places.

• 34:41Speaker 03

  Timu.

• 34:42Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, Timu, as you know. And I had a bunch of things saved in my wishlist, and many of them disappeared because they got pulled because they're made in China.

• 34:51Sean Fennessey?

Interesting. I'm, of course, having an issue with this naturally in the world of physical media.

• 34:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure. Oh, tough.

• 34:56Sean Fennessey?

When you're acquiring international editions, the tariffs are a real factor in terms of pricing.

• 35:02Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 35:02Sean Fennessey?

It's a challenge. To me, the sad part about that is the actual, like, independent retailers who work super hard to get, like, international editions of discs into their stores that, like, they're getting hammered by this stuff. It's obviously an absolute drop in the bucket relative to the real-life experience of so many people, but it's affecting all the things that we're interested in. Okay, my picks. Um... In Blockbuster, I'm gonna go with Total Recall,

• 35:29Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 35:30Sean Fennessey?

which is one of Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece's strong case for it being Arnold Schwarzenegger's best movie, kind of neck and neck, I think, with the Terminator films.

• 35:39Speaker 03

A very exciting film to see in 1990 as a 13-year-old.

• 35:43Sean Fennessey?

I'll bet. Not one, not two, but three-breasted woman appears in this film, which I can imagine blew young Chris's mind.

• 35:51Speaker 03

  Didn't know it was possible.

• 35:53Sean Fennessey?

In addition, like, just a riveting sci-fi story that is, like, really walks this very delicate line between schlock and incisive satire.

• 36:03Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:03Sean Fennessey?

Very funny performance from Sharon Stone as a wife who is not to be trusted. What do we think Verhoeven is trying to say with that? That predates her appearance in Basic Instinct. Schwarzenegger, like, very, very comfortable, cracking lines on dudes while also cracking skulls. And when he's put in a position to succeed like this, like, you tend to get extremely memorable movies. This is just one of the best sci-fi satire borderline comedies of its era.

• 36:31Sean Fennessey?

So that's Blockbuster. There's obviously a couple of other categories I could have gone in, but Blockbuster is kind of funky, and I'm looking forward to talking through it with you guys.

• 36:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 36:39Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 36:40Sean Fennessey?

There are obviously a few in there that will work very well, but I think I'm gonna take one of those off the board right now by just taking... In comedy Home Alone, since it is-

• 36:51Amanda Dobbins?

I was gonna do it if you didn't, yeah.

• 36:52Sean Fennessey?

You know, a very meaningful movie to me personally. We did an episode of it on the Rewatchables with Mina Kimes. It was very fun. And, uh, Macaulay Culkin fucking with Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci for one hour is remarkable. The actual framework of the movie is very upsetting and I think about it often as a parent.

• 37:10Speaker 03

Oh, about like leaving Alice home alone?

• 37:11Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 37:12Speaker 03

And how she would handle it?

• 37:12Sean Fennessey?

We don't have like nine kids. They were shuttling a lot of children into those cars going to the airport.

• 37:17Speaker 03

There would be a little more liability on you.

• 37:20Sean Fennessey?

And, and a little, frankly, a little hard to accept if you want to look at the movie realistically.

• 37:23Speaker 03

Well, yeah, we were latchkey kids back then. Like the parents, you know what I mean? They let us rock.

• 37:27Sean Fennessey?

And Kevin McCallister, you know, he was an iconoclast. He wanted his own space. He wanted his own time. He wanted his own cheese pizza, you know? He wanted his own time.

• 37:37Speaker 03

He didn't want to get pissed on by, uh, by, by Kieran.

• 37:40Sean Fennessey?

No, no, and he didn't want Buzz to terrorize him and, um, Home Alone is a classic.

• 37:45Speaker 03

Did you grow to have Buzz's room with the tarantula and the baseball cards? Would you say Buzz, Buzz was your kind of model?

• 37:51Sean Fennessey?

No, I never had my own room.

• 37:53Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 37:53Sean Fennessey?

So, uh, I always shared a room with my brother growing up. So I wouldn't know what that's like.

• 37:57Speaker 03

You say that like you're a Dickens character.

• 38:00Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, just a poor boy in an orphanage living with my brother. No, it was great to share a room with my brother, but I, I literally have never had my own room. I think I've talked about this on the podcast.

• 38:09Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 38:09Sean Fennessey?

Cause I had like roommates in college.

• 38:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 38:11Sean Fennessey?

And then moved in with my girlfriend right at a, right at a college.

• 38:15Amanda Dobbins?

Right. That explains a lot about you. You're just like constantly seeking your own space because you, you've never had a room of one's own.

• 38:24Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, yeah.

• 38:25Amanda Dobbins?

So you're just like, get away from me, everybody. I just need some time with my spreadsheets. The spreadsheets are the walls that you build to keep us out.

• 38:35Sean Fennessey?

Maybe, I mean, to my mind, it's kept you in, you know? You involved. The spreadsheets have worked out.

• 38:41Amanda Dobbins?

The other day Zach asked me, he's like, hey, where do you look for like a date of film releases? He's like, what's your favorite website? And I was like, Sean's spreadsheet, you know?

• 38:51Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 38:51Amanda Dobbins?

So I have respect for it.

• 38:52Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, it's, it's, hopefully it's benefited all of us here. Um, so I'll take Home Alone in comedy. Good comedy year, but

• 38:59Speaker 03

  Great picks.

• 39:00Sean Fennessey?

Feels like the right place to take it.

• 39:01Speaker 03

I appreciate what you just did there. Um, you know that, uh, American Russian relations are one of my core interests.

• 39:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Um.

• 39:10Speaker 03

  As are.

• 39:10Sean Fennessey?

  It's not your turn.

• 39:11Amanda Dobbins?

Take my hand, because it's my turn.

• 39:13Speaker 03

  Oh, it's going back?

• 39:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 39:15Sean Fennessey?

  This is a safe fashion.

• 39:16Speaker 03

  I understand. I understand.

• 39:17Amanda Dobbins?

It's also, it's a little thin on the ground, right? In action horror thriller.

• 39:21Speaker 03

I think I got confused because of the way we're sitting versus what the order is.

• 39:24Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, no, I know. I know.

• 39:25Speaker 03

  Go ahead.

• 39:25Amanda Dobbins?

  Well, I'm sorry.

• 39:26Speaker 03

  I have a deep.

• 39:27Amanda Dobbins?

I, and I didn't do it first out of.

• 39:29Sean Fennessey?

This is roughly the 85th draft we've done.

• 39:30Amanda Dobbins?

  Out of respect.

• 39:31Speaker 03

I have actually started to wonder whether or not I have a brain tumor when it comes to drafts. Cause I fucked up, uh, the draft in Bill's pod, like live on stage. And I was just like, it's my turn, right? Like eight times.

• 39:42Sean Fennessey?

  That did happen.

• 39:43Speaker 03

  And I don't know what's going on.

• 39:44Sean Fennessey?

  Are you okay?

• 39:45Speaker 03

  I think so.

• 39:46Sean Fennessey?

  No matter what happens.

• 39:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 39:48Sean Fennessey?

Early onset dementia, some sort of degenerative issue.

• 39:51Speaker 03

You're gonna pod me until I'm.

• 39:52Sean Fennessey?

I will put you in that chair and make sure that you record all of your nonsense dribbling into perpetuity.

• 40:00Speaker 03

But I'm like, Mike Figg is in Internal Affairs.

• 40:03Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, come on.

• 40:04Speaker 03

  Go ahead.

• 40:05Sean Fennessey?

All right, Amanda, it is your turn now.

• 40:06Amanda Dobbins?

I just, I, I'm, uh, trying to justify my cruelness, um, my cruelty.

• 40:12Speaker 03

You're allowed to like this movie?

• 40:13Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I love this movie, but it is also, we added a sequel into the mix. So that takes away especially some action movies. Not to, not to tip a hand there. So I will be taking in action horror thriller, The Hunt for Radecover. Uh, which is a movie I, I love dearly. Um, and is really the only submarine environment that I would ever want to be a part of. Even Crimson Tide is, is too tough for me.

• 40:42Speaker 03

Why would you want to be?

• 40:43Sean Fennessey?

  Be on a Russian sub?

• 40:44Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, no, I just, you know, they have respect for each other, you know? There's like an.

• 40:52Speaker 03

All the Russians smoking on each other.

• 40:54Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, Samuel and Sean Connery, you know?

• 40:58Speaker 03

  They murder their political officer.

• 41:01Amanda Dobbins?

Well, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. They have respect for each other.

• 41:05Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 41:05Amanda Dobbins?

You know, sometimes you just wanna be on a team with one other guy.

• 41:08Speaker 03

Do you think that you would be down with defecting? Like, do you think that, like, you would be like part of like the group of guys that were defecting? Or would you have wanted to get offloaded in a fake nuclear war?

• 41:18Amanda Dobbins?

No, I would absolutely, like, you know me, cuz I, like, anytime I could just be like, fuck that to who, to anyone.

• 41:24Speaker 03

  Right.

• 41:24Amanda Dobbins?

I would absolutely, I don't really like authority very much, so I would be happy to defect.

• 41:29Speaker 03

I think that one of the happiest places you ever would have been would be if you were the sonar operator on The Dallas. Just got your, your, your, your roll of paper towels, cleaning off your screen, listening to Paganini, you know?

• 41:44Sean Fennessey?

Um, I feel that you guys have isolated me on this podcast as an antisocial weirdo.

• 41:49Speaker 03

No, I just think that that would be a job that you were really good at. You were just like, bang, got it, con sonar.

• 41:53Sean Fennessey?

  Could I listen at 2X?

• 41:56Sean Fennessey?

If I could listen to the sonar pings at 2X, I think I'd be more comfortable.

• 42:00Speaker 03

  Ah.

• 42:00Sean Fennessey?

The Hunt for Red October is fantastic. Chris has been lobbying for it to be on the rewatchables.

• 42:05Amanda Dobbins?

I can't believe that it hasn't been. I know it was up for a vote.

• 42:07Speaker 03

I even watched the movie that he, he was like, you have to watch Inside Movies, and I did.

• 42:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 42:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Did you like it?

• 42:12Speaker 03

  Yeah, it was good.

• 42:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 42:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:14Amanda Dobbins?

Um, no, this is a peak rewatchable in my house because we were big on, like, all the Jack Ryan, Tom Clancy stuff. Like, my parents read those books, along with The Grisham stuff.

• 42:24Sean Fennessey?

And this was the first of the Jack Ryan's. And then Alec Baldwin, of course, was recast.

• 42:29Speaker 03

Look what they took from us.

• 42:30Sean Fennessey?

Harrison Ford. Now, that's an interesting, there's probably a wider Jack Ryan pod to be done.

• 42:36Speaker 03

Cause you probably prefer Harrison Ford, Jack Ryan as a specimen.

• 42:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 42:40Speaker 03

With his little neckerchief, you know?

• 42:41Amanda Dobbins?

I do, but this is obviously better than any of the Harrison Ford movies, in my opinion.

• 42:48Sean Fennessey?

I'm quite fond of Clear and Present Danger. I think this is better.

• 42:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 42:51Sean Fennessey?

But I think Clear and Present Danger is good. Patriot Games, I'm a little mixed on personally. Uh, what about The Sum of All Fears?

• 42:58Speaker 03

Oh, and Ben Affleck blows up Baltimore?

• 43:00Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 43:00Speaker 03

  Um.

• 43:01Amanda Dobbins?

And he becomes... Did we verify that he becomes president at the end? You told me that on a different draft. On a different draft.

• 43:08Speaker 03

Jack wins, is, is, becomes president at a certain point in the Tom Clancy novels. I can't remember if in Some of All Fears, he is like the designated survivor, basically.

• 43:17Amanda Dobbins?

What is his current status on the show?

• 43:20Speaker 03

  Jack Ryan?

• 43:20Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, like what's up with him?

• 43:21Speaker 03

Oh, like on the TV show?

• 43:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 43:22Speaker 03

I know, he keeps going into South America and doing some, some dastardly deeds. Yeah.

• 43:26Sean Fennessey?

I will just say, in Alec Baldwin Industries, this is an amazing time.

• 43:31Speaker 03

  What a year.

• 43:31Sean Fennessey?

1988 through 1993, Alec Baldwin is phenomenal.

• 43:36Speaker 03

  When's Malice?

• 43:37Sean Fennessey?

It's, this is, this is the shape of it. It's Beetlejuice, Married to the Mob, Working Girl.

• 43:42Amanda Dobbins?

  That's right.

• 43:42Sean Fennessey?

Great Balls of Fire, The Hunt for Red October, Miami Blues, Alice, the Woody Allen movie, um, The Marrying Man, Glenn Gary Glenn Ross, and Malice.

• 43:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 43:51Sean Fennessey?

  That's a run.

• 43:52Amanda Dobbins?

  Just...

• 43:52Sean Fennessey?

That's a great, at the time, I think everybody thought he was gonna be whatever, Clark Gable or something, and it didn't, obviously didn't turn out that way.

• 43:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 43:59Sean Fennessey?

But, great range, lots of different kinds of movies, good action hero, great comedy star, great like dirtbaggy, you know, crime noir movie guy. Obviously, he's had a very weird...

• 44:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Now he's on...

• 44:10Sean Fennessey?

  Are you watching the Baldwins?

• 44:10Amanda Dobbins?

Now he's on TLC with like 12 kids.

• 44:12Speaker 03

I have not been watching Hilaria.

• 44:12Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I'm not watching it.

• 44:13Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 44:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 44:14Sean Fennessey?

There's a lot of, um, mockery of that show out in the world, but I haven't seen any of it.

• 44:18Amanda Dobbins?

  Um...

• 44:18Sean Fennessey?

He was a good Jack Ryan, I thought. I enjoyed him.

• 44:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah. Great movie.

• 44:23Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 44:23Amanda Dobbins?

  One thing only.

• 44:24Speaker 03

  My turn now.

• 44:25Sean Fennessey?

  Chris, you've got two.

• 44:26Speaker 03

Okay. I will take, in drama, a film, I recently began my own physical media collection. Did I tell you this?

• 44:37Speaker 03

And I realized how important this film was to me because of how quickly it was like, I gotta get this to start with.

• 44:44Sean Fennessey?

  First on your list.

• 44:44Speaker 03

  Miller's Crossing.

• 44:45Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 44:45Speaker 03

Which I will have in drama. It is, I think, Four Out of Seven Days of the Week, my favorite Coen brother movie, is the first one I saw.

• 44:53Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 44:53Speaker 03

It was a mind altering experience to watch this on VHS, whatever year I saw it. Like, it was pretty close to 90, if it wasn't 90. Um, and it's still such a mesmerizing, unique take on, you know, 1930s and 40s fast talking noir movies, very much rooted in Dashiell Hammett, stars Gabriel Byrne as like, kind of a Michael Clayton Irish mobster who's working for Albert Finney's, uh, gangster, like the lead, leader of the Irish mob, and he flits back and forth between rival factions of, of the underworld. Um, but incredible, Marti Gai Hardin performance, like a star making Totoro performance, really great early Buscemi, all like the great Coen Brothers faces are in this movie.

• 45:38Speaker 03

And I still say lines from this movie to this day.

• 45:41Sean Fennessey?

  It's a five star classic.

• 45:43Speaker 03

Um, those beautiful scores, Carter Burwell, just an amazing.

• 45:47Amanda Dobbins?

I'm, I honestly didn't hear anything that you were saying because I was thinking about physical media. Yeah. Why?

• 45:53Speaker 03

You know what's really nice is he like now pretty routinely will be like, I have these three. Would you like, would you like them?

• 45:58Sean Fennessey?

I've been giving my, like my duplicates and my stuff that I don't need to Chris.

• 46:02Amanda Dobbins?

  What, what inspired this?

• 46:04Speaker 03

Um, I started finding that the versions of movies that I would be watching, for instance, for rewatchables. On like any of the streaming services, like were pretty obviously degraded or just not as good as I think they could be. And I think because we'd seen a couple of things in theaters recently, like rep theater stuff. Like when we went and saw Thief, I was like, this is way better than Thief was when I watched it for the rewatchables. So I just, I ha, I got a player and then I got like a couple of like, you know, days of heaven.

• 46:33Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 46:33Speaker 03

Uh, like he, you know, the ones that you would think seven, you know, like the ones that were kind of like core texts. But they're just so obviously like better.

• 46:42Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I understand.

• 46:43Speaker 03

But I only, I think I'm going to keep it pretty, pretty normal. Like I want the library of movies that I will watch over and over again. And then some stuff where I'm like, oh, this is really interesting and I got it at a good price or whatever.

• 46:54Sean Fennessey?

I think you're pursuing a cool version of it, which is like, obviously I'm completely mentally ill and need to seek help. Um, you're, it's, you know, basically capturing your all time favorites.

• 47:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 47:06Sean Fennessey?

And honestly, with the way that the four K's look now, like these movies have never looked better than since, than when they were first shown on film in theaters. And then also just like really weird stuff that you otherwise would never see.

• 47:17Speaker 03

  Like Italian seventies crime movies.

• 47:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Right, right, right.

• 47:20Sean Fennessey?

And just saying like, I'm going to take a chance on these three movies. And then for three months, this is like one of my hobbies. It's just like buying a book where you're just like, this is what I'm going to do with my free time with this book for these three months.

• 47:30Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I'm concerned. You've got him, you've got Tim, you've got like Tracy all around you.

• 47:35Speaker 03

One of our great playwrights, playwrights, one of our great actors, Tim, you know?

• 47:39Sean Fennessey?

I mean. You know, I think I said this on the Minecraft episode, the, the boys are back. Boys are back. No, I said on the Warfare episode, boy, like it's just, it's boys time.

• 47:47Speaker 03

Yeah, it is. It is boys town.

• 47:48Sean Fennessey?

The boys and their toys are back in town and you need to just make room for us, make space for us.

• 47:55Speaker 03

Fitting Knox for a Masters green jacket.

• 47:56Sean Fennessey?

  That's exactly right.

• 47:59Sean Fennessey?

Start fitting him for a movie theater chair in your house.

• 48:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 48:02Amanda Dobbins?

He went to the driving range after.

• 48:04Speaker 03

That's how it goes. You watch it and you're like, I want to do it.

• 48:07Sean Fennessey?

Yes, I want to wear that jacket, that hideous green jacket one day so I can be a part of that club, you know?

• 48:13Amanda Dobbins?

I just want to say I've had a lot of listeners, um, just like DMing me about skincare and I, I have felt seen and supported by that and I want to thank everyone. So.

• 48:22Speaker 03

Those are all my, my, uh.

• 48:25Speaker 03

  I just make up.

• 48:26Amanda Dobbins?

You know what? One of them was about Augustinus Bitter. So there you go. Yeah.

• 48:31Speaker 03

  Um, okay. So.

• 48:33Sean Fennessey?

You've got another. See our, which, uh, which categories you take?

• 48:35Speaker 03

That's a drama, bud. Thanks for asking. Um.

• 48:39Sean Fennessey?

I really looked out for you.

• 48:42Speaker 03

  Fully.

• 48:42Sean Fennessey?

I did. And, and Amanda as well. I, I felt Amanda that was, would be interested in Hunt for Rattler as well. So I was, I went home alone, you know, in the spirit of good potting.

• 48:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 48:52Sean Fennessey?

We're trying to lift each other up today despite Amanda and I sniping at each other as usual.

• 48:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Let's just, listen, that's.

• 48:57Sean Fennessey?

  It's part of the game.

• 48:58Amanda Dobbins?

  You know?

• 48:58Sean Fennessey?

It's part of the, part of life.

• 49:00Speaker 03

  I think for.

• 49:04Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 49:05Speaker 03

So I have, I have Millers and Drama and Goodfellas and Oscar. And I think.

• 49:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Pretty strong lineup.

• 49:12Speaker 03

  I'll take.

• 49:15Speaker 03

  Just to get one here.

• 49:20Speaker 03

I'm gonna grab Days of Thunder and Action.

• 49:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Hmm.

• 49:24Speaker 03

No, I'm gonna do Days of Thunder and Blockbuster. I'm sorry. Days of Thunder and Blockbuster.

• 49:27Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, great.

• 49:28Speaker 03

  Uh, just recently.

• 49:29Sean Fennessey?

  Category getting a little thin.

• 49:30Speaker 03

Yeah, just recently did this on Rewatchables and, um. It's essentially just Top Gun with cars.

• 49:36Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 49:37Speaker 03

But god damn it, like, there are frames of this movie that will make your heart explode with patriotism and love of cinema and what Tony Scott gave us and what Tom Cruise gave us.

• 49:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm hmm.

• 49:52Speaker 03

And like, just, just the sequences of the car, the races, the NASCAR races alone are worth it.

• 49:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm hmm.

• 49:57Speaker 03

Obviously, this is, uh, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's union, uh, on screen.

• 50:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 50:03Speaker 03

And quite exciting. She plays a neurologist.

• 50:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, I remember.

• 50:06Speaker 03

  A neurosurgeon.

• 50:07Sean Fennessey?

She's a 23 years old in this movie, isn't she?

• 50:10Speaker 03

Did you, did you hear the bit where, um, she went to Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson and said she really wanted to do a lot of research on neurosurgery and they said, don't bother?

• 50:23Sean Fennessey?

  Eh, checks out.

• 50:26Speaker 03

So I'll take that in Blockbuster.

• 50:28Sean Fennessey?

Okay, good pick. Days of Thunder made 82 million dollars at the box office, just in under the wire. Total Recall made 119 million dollars and...

• 50:41Sean Fennessey?

Did you take your Blockbuster yet?

• 50:42Amanda Dobbins?

No, I'm about to though, because it's my pick.

• 50:43Sean Fennessey?

  Fire away.

• 50:44Amanda Dobbins?

In Blockbuster, I will take Presumed Innocent.

• 50:47Sean Fennessey?

  Intriguing.

• 50:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Ooh. Yeah.

• 50:49Sean Fennessey?

  Okay. You've left yourself open.

• 50:51Speaker 03

  Interesting.

• 50:52Amanda Dobbins?

  Have I?

• 50:52Sean Fennessey?

Perhaps this isn't a film that matters to you.

• 50:54Amanda Dobbins?

Um, oh, sure, but, you know, that's, I, I know, I know what you think that I would take, but yes, I, I would like to have...

• 51:03Sean Fennessey?

I know you love Presumed Innocent.

• 51:04Amanda Dobbins?

Harrison Ford in a, in a legal thriller.

• 51:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 51:07Sean Fennessey?

I thought you were gonna say something else. I would love to have Harrison Ford in...

• 51:13Amanda Dobbins?

I guess we talked a lot about this film when we were all watching the remake on Apple, which strong start, and then really, really didn't, didn't bear out. Luckily, they didn't...

• 51:27Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, reproduce the ending of the film. So I guess no spoiler.

• 51:33Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 51:33Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah. I mean.

• 51:34Sean Fennessey?

I thought a lot to recommend.

• 51:36Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 51:36Sean Fennessey?

A very disappointing final couple of episodes.

• 51:38Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, exactly. Anyway, no spoilers if you haven't seen.

• 51:40Sean Fennessey?

It did launch Chase Infinity, future PTA star.

• 51:43Speaker 03

  That's true.

• 51:43Sean Fennessey?

  Battle after another.

• 51:44Amanda Dobbins?

Right. That's true. Anyway, if you haven't seen the film version of Presumed Innocent, it's a little different. Uh, but also.

• 51:50Sean Fennessey?

  Fantastic.

• 51:51Amanda Dobbins?

Same and dynamite. So good. And, and that type of like airport novel with respect to Scott Tro. I do think I, I'm gonna this summer read all the Scott Tro novels, but like.

• 52:03Speaker 03

Chronologically or will you go best of?

• 52:05Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I think this is the first one, so I'll probably start with two.

• 52:08Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 52:08Amanda Dobbins?

  You know, um.

• 52:09Speaker 03

You feel like you got this one taken.

• 52:12Amanda Dobbins?

I don't know if the suspense would be there and the mystery. But I spent a lot of time watching nineties movies, studio movies, starring movie stars adapted from things that you read in the airport.

• 52:26Speaker 03

  Mm hmm.

• 52:26Amanda Dobbins?

  And had a fantastic time.

• 52:28Speaker 03

  Bonnie Bedelia.

• 52:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Dynamite.

• 52:31Speaker 03

  Great year for her.

• 52:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 52:34Speaker 03

Maybe talking more about her soon.

• 52:35Sean Fennessey?

  Spoilers.

• 52:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 52:36Sean Fennessey?

Please. Uh, she's a strong screen presence for sure. Um, okay. I have two picks.

• 52:44Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm. Where to go here?

• 52:49Sean Fennessey?

Well, I don't think anyone's gonna take my drama. I could be wrong about that, but I don't think so. So I will start with Oscar nominee.

• 53:00Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm hmm.

• 53:01Sean Fennessey?

  And I will take Ghost.

• 53:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 53:04Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 53:04Sean Fennessey?

Starring Demi Moore and Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg.

• 53:08Amanda Dobbins?

Deleting it off a list now.

• 53:10Sean Fennessey?

Uh, the late great Patrick Swayze.

• 53:13Speaker 03

Do you agree with Bill Simmons that this is an accurate portrayal of the afterlife?

• 53:18Sean Fennessey?

I think what he says is that this is what happens when you die and they rip, bring you to hell.

• 53:22Speaker 03

No, it's either darkness and you get yanked to hell or light.

• 53:26Sean Fennessey?

I don't believe in the afterlife, so no.

• 53:30Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 53:30Sean Fennessey?

But that doesn't, I'm not ruling anything out. Do I think that there are like shadow goblins that come and rip you into the, into the earth?

• 53:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 53:39Sean Fennessey?

I don't think that, but when I saw this movie and I saw this movie probably at home when I was nine.

• 53:43Speaker 03

I saw this movie on a date.

• 53:45Amanda Dobbins?

  That's awesome.

• 53:46Sean Fennessey?

  Did you, uh?

• 53:47Amanda Dobbins?

  How'd that go?

• 53:48Sean Fennessey?

  Did you steal the deal?

• 53:48Speaker 03

I'll tell you what happened. Uh, I got broken up with by this girl as we were like going into this movie and I was quite rude about the film because of that.

• 53:57Sean Fennessey?

Wait, I don't understand. Why did you go?

• 53:58Speaker 03

Like, it was like a group date and like I was dating a girl in sixth grade or whatever.

• 54:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure, yeah.

• 54:03Speaker 03

She was like, we're not dating anymore. And I was like, fuck. And I was so mad.

• 54:08Amanda Dobbins?

Did you still sit next to each other?

• 54:09Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 54:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, that sucks.

• 54:10Speaker 03

I basically tried to ruin her experience.

• 54:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, okay.

• 54:13Speaker 03

  You know?

• 54:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Not the most mature response.

• 54:15Sean Fennessey?

  This is really...

• 54:15Speaker 03

I was in sixth grade. I think it was pretty fucking mature.

• 54:20Sean Fennessey?

Can you just say her name out loud on this episode?

• 54:24Amanda Dobbins?

  This is a new one.

• 54:25Speaker 03

  It was El Mic Ferson.

• 54:29Speaker 03

  I never forgot, no.

• 54:30Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, good for you.

• 54:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 54:33Sean Fennessey?

Ghost is a wonderful movie and, uh, was back in the news when Demi Moore was doing a lot of press for Substance. And it was interesting to hear her talk about that because she gives such a great performance in that movie. And she's not great in a lot of movies in that era. She was always a kind of interesting movie star and a complicated movie actor. And that part is really hard to pull off and it's such a strange, um, mixture of like heavy romance and a movie about grief and a supernatural thriller and all this complex stuff and the Tony Golden character is so like over the top and ridiculous and, um...

• 55:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Tough 90s for him.

• 55:07Sean Fennessey?

And, and, and continuing on. He appears to be not a very nice man in one battle after another, actually. But I, uh, I always really liked this movie and I, um, I, I...

• 55:18Sean Fennessey?

  It's like a high-concept, low-execution mainstream movie.

• 55:21Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 55:22Sean Fennessey?

Which I think is something that is a little bit lost, that when we get stuff like that, I try to put a little bit of like a red circle around it. So, want to give it a shout.

• 55:28Speaker 03

What's the last commercially released real, like, romantic tearjerker? So not like After Sun, but like a movie where like there's a lot of tears being shed because of like a romantic relationship. Albeit maybe a doomed one, but like...

• 55:44Sean Fennessey?

I mean, It Ends With Us was like this, you know? Like that, that's kind of what that was playing on.

• 55:49Amanda Dobbins?

Our tears were for different reasons on that one.

• 55:51Sean Fennessey?

  I didn't feel that way.

• 55:52Amanda Dobbins?

Um, I'm trying to think. I mean, the first thing that... Like all the Nicholas Sparks movies, I think, which includes The Notebook, but they kept making those. Did, um, Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams made one, like, 2010. But I can't think of anything in the last 10 years.

• 56:09Speaker 03

  Iron Claw.

• 56:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Well, sure.

• 56:11Sean Fennessey?

I mean, that was a classic male. It was, it really was, though. I think the romantic tear jerker that is well regarded is unusual.

• 56:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 56:20Sean Fennessey?

And in this era, that wasn't so much the case, as the era of like James L. Brooks and Nora Ephron. And you've got these writers who have like a real knack for this kind of thing. Mike Nichols movies are really good at that. But, um, yeah, I don't know. It feels very, feels very far away. To me, it's because it has that, like, horror thriller element to it that I really enjoy the complexity of the genre types mixed together. All right. So I have another pick.

• 56:44Speaker 03

Got a very interesting turn of, from, was this David Zucker directed this?

• 56:49Sean Fennessey?

  Yes, exactly.

• 56:50Speaker 03

Which was obviously like one of the great comic filmmakers.

• 56:52Sean Fennessey?

Director of Airplane and Top Secret and all those movies. Okay.

• 56:58Sean Fennessey?

I think I'll go to thriller, horror, action here. A number of cool choices. I'll take Misery. I think Misery is the best movie of the bunch. Stephen King adaptation, Kathy Bates and James Caan. Story about, it's kind of like if a CR head met Chris in the street and decided to break his ankles so that he couldn't leave their home. And do you, do you fear that?

• 57:27Speaker 03

  No, not at all.

• 57:28Sean Fennessey?

You don't fear being abducted by a fan?

• 57:30Speaker 03

I don't, no. I don't think I have that kind of effect on people.

• 57:32Sean Fennessey?

What if it was just like a really well meaning but mentally damaged 50 year old man who lifts weights all day?

• 57:38Speaker 03

  Was it?

• 57:41Sean Fennessey?

Just like a Will of Mice and Men situation, you know?

• 57:43Speaker 03

  Oh, like, I'm the rabbit?

• 57:45Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 57:48Sean Fennessey?

What like, would it be okay? How would you, would you be able to have empathy in that experience?

• 57:53Speaker 03

I, I would try, yeah. This is a strange conversation topic.

• 57:59Sean Fennessey?

Misery, obviously very funny because obviously Stephen King writing about like basically his worst nightmare. What would happen if he found himself in the throes of a fan? Who took things too far and Kathy Bates like really, really sells the insanity of this part. Adapted by the great William Goldman, directed by Rob Reiner. Rob Reiner in the midst of one of the most remarkable runs of crowd pleasing movies in the late 80s and early 90s.

• 58:24Amanda Dobbins?

You have to say it like that.

• 58:25Sean Fennessey?

What do you mean? Crowd pleasing? You know, he shall return this year with Spinal Tap 2.

• 58:30Amanda Dobbins?

  I saw.

• 58:31Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 58:32Sean Fennessey?

Coming out this fall. Any thoughts?

• 58:34Amanda Dobbins?

  I'll see it.

• 58:35Speaker 03

  I'm excited for it. Yeah.

• 58:36Sean Fennessey?

I once saw Rob Reiner eating at a restaurant in Hawaii with his family. He looked very happy. He looked like a very, very happy person.

• 58:44Speaker 03

Is he, is he still tweeting?

• 58:46Sean Fennessey?

Uh, I think he's off that platform.

• 58:48Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 58:48Amanda Dobbins?

Is he like on Blues guy?

• 58:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 58:50Sean Fennessey?

No, he's just went to Truth Social, you know? He wanted to see what was happening over there just to get an inside look at the damage.

• 58:57Amanda Dobbins?

It's really interesting when you, the way that you feel the need to like answer the call, you know? You like sense like, okay, like Chris's voice, you know, Chris isn't really feeling it. And this is what you fill the void with.

• 59:10Speaker 03

I'm feeling it today. Do I, does it seem like I'm not feeling it?

• 59:13Sean Fennessey?

It doesn't matter. I've got your back no matter what.

• 59:17Sean Fennessey?

This is a performance. It's important that we perform.

• 59:20Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I think you're doing a great job. I just, you know, it's, it's a, it's a new character that's, that's jumping out. It's my turn?

• 59:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 59:27Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 59:27Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. Uh, there are two things I could do here, but I, I think I'm going to draft with my heart instead of strategically. And so, and well, comedy is also a little thinner. So in comedy, I'm going to take Metropolitan.

• 59:46Sean Fennessey?

Good. Almost went with this with Oscar.

• 59:48Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, yeah. That also would have been good. Um. This is Whit Stillman, the Whit Stillman, the first in the Whit Stillman trilogy about young, overly educated, rich kids, or mostly rich kids, sitting in rooms trying to impress each other and being miserable with their lives. And I did not see this when I was five, but I saw it when I was young. Around the same time, I think I saw Whit Stillman and Noah Baumbach's Kicking and Screaming, like, all of the 90s on Wee movies were handed to me, probably in high school. And, yeah, they were pretty important. I was like, wow, I didn't know you could do this with a movie. I didn't know that there were people out

• 1:00:32Amanda Dobbins?

there who wanted to be like this and are terrible, but also seem to, you know, value being terrible in the same way that I would. And, like, how do I get to be near them?

• 1:00:42Sean Fennessey?

Very incisive. Look at your psychology.

• 1:00:45Amanda Dobbins?

Like, what can I do about this? How can I be around the people who make movies like this? How can I be around people who like movies like this? So, this was, I mean, it's a classic. I think we all love, all love this one. Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:59Sean Fennessey?

It's a great movie. Is this your, where does this rank in the Whit filmography for you?

• 1:01:05Amanda Dobbins?

It's probably one, and then Last Days of Disco, two. Not a Barcelona person? No, I like Barcelona. You're making me rank them. You know, there's a one, two, and three when you rank them. I like, I like all of them. And I, and I think I did also watch them chronologically, so there just is that first moment of like, oh. But I think, if you, if you say Whit Stillman, you think of all of them in that living room at the, at the party, like, bickering with each other. You think of literary criticism.

• 1:01:35Sean Fennessey?

I was just gonna say, reading literary criticism, so you don't have to read the book. Yeah, Chris Augman, just my whole personality.

• 1:01:43Amanda Dobbins?

  All time.

• 1:01:43Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, that's my whole, I just based my whole thing on that.

• 1:01:46Amanda Dobbins?

And so, he's obviously in this, Kicking and Screaming, and also on Gilmore Girls, right around this time. So, Chris Augman was just everywhere in my life, very important to me, which I think says a lot about me.

• 1:01:58Sean Fennessey?

  He's terrific.

• 1:01:59Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:00Sean Fennessey?

• 1:03:47Speaker 03

All right, so I'm gonna pick in comedy. Okay. Uh, I'm gonna pick house party.

• 1:03:52Sean Fennessey?

  Wow.

• 1:03:52Speaker 03

Directed by Reginald Hudlin, starring Kid N' Play, the rap duo at the time, Robin Harris, Tish Campbell. This was like my Days of Confused, before Days of Confused came out. I mentioned that I was pretty like into rap at the time and, you know, so on. But like, I was like, really defining my personality off of this. And this was, it's essentially like a one crazy night movie about these two guys who were trying to get to a house party that one of their fathers forbids them from going to. And their like loves and their dreams and their hopes, but also like a ton of really, really funny comic stuff happening in it. But it was just like such a perfect slice of life and also like the immediacy of getting

• 1:04:35Speaker 03

to see like, you know, rap culture reflected on screen like that was pretty amazing at the time. You know, Reginald Hudlin is, is, was like a huge, I guess, kind of a big deal filmmaker for me at this time, when I think about it. Maybe, maybe is one of my first favorite filmmakers in some ways, you know, like.

• 1:04:56Sean Fennessey?

  Big boomerang guy?

• 1:04:57Speaker 03

Well, I think it was just like, I would recognize his name and the movies were like very, they felt like kind of urgent at the time. But this was like, uh, this was like a real like re-watch 55 times. Um, I do think I saw this in the theater. It was a big deal for me and my friends. R.I.P. Robin Harris, one of the greatest ever to do it.

• 1:05:16Sean Fennessey?

He's very funny in this movie. My Kid N' Play movie was always, maybe just the slight age difference was always class act. That was the one that I always watched. I don't know if you ever saw that one, Amanda, where they like, the two guys like switch

• 1:05:27Sean Fennessey?

roles, they like meet each other inside the school.

• 1:05:28Amanda Dobbins?

Sorry, I just Googled it, yes.

• 1:05:29Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:05:30Sean Fennessey?

Which I don't, I'm not saying is objectively a better movie than House Party, but it was always the one that I wanted to watch and also featured, uh, Karen Parsons, who was on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And I always thought she was really beautiful. Uh, okay. You got one more pick, Chris.

• 1:05:47Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:05:48Sean Fennessey?

House Party is classic. Did you see the House Party remake?

• 1:05:50Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:05:50Sean Fennessey?

  Was it good?

• 1:05:51Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:05:51Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:05:52Speaker 03

  For...

• 1:05:58Speaker 03

Let's do action, horror, thriller here, right?

• 1:06:02Amanda Dobbins?

You don't have that? What do you have?

• 1:06:03Speaker 03

I have drama, comedy, Oscar, and blockbuster.

• 1:06:08Sean Fennessey?

Deep bench for horror, action, thriller, because there are so many thrillers this year.

• 1:06:14Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:06:14Sean Fennessey?

This is an amazing time for the Hollywood thriller.

• 1:06:21Speaker 03

Can I call King of New York a thriller?

• 1:06:23Sean Fennessey?

  I think so.

• 1:06:24Speaker 03

Then I will take it as a thriller.

• 1:06:25Sean Fennessey?

  Great.

• 1:06:26Speaker 03

Abel Ferrera's New York crime story. This is a great year for gangster movies. That I could have picked three or four of them, but I'll take this one. Probably the most illicit movie I had ever seen at the time, like when I saw this on video. Like, I'd never seen certain things, certain acts committed on the subway. Like, like I did in King of New York. And one of the iconic Christopher Walken performances, along with like an incredible ensemble cast. But this is probably peak Ferrera for me. And it's just an awesome New York gangster movie.

• 1:07:03Sean Fennessey?

One of my favorite movies of all time. We did a great Rewatchables episode about it with Quentin Tarantino about five years ago. Insane bench on this movie.

• 1:07:14Speaker 03

  Unbelievable.

• 1:07:15Sean Fennessey?

Caruso, Wesley, young Wesley Snipes, Victor Argo, Larry Fishburne.

• 1:07:24Sean Fennessey?

Honestly, beautiful, just really dark, upsetting movie about what happens when a guy gets out of prison and is taking his corners back. Huge fan of this movie. Okay, Amanda.

• 1:07:36Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay. I have-

• 1:07:39Sean Fennessey?

  What do you have left?

• 1:07:39Amanda Dobbins?

So I have sequel, drama, and wildcard left. So I still can't do this with my hands.

• 1:07:47Sean Fennessey?

  No one has taken-

• 1:07:47Amanda Dobbins?

I can't do it. The Inglourious Basterds one, I just can't do it. But yeah, you can do it, but Knox-

• 1:07:53Sean Fennessey?

  Trey Glaser?

• 1:07:53Amanda Dobbins?

Can do it, yeah. Okay, sequel, no one has anything. I'm gonna go ahead and, and, and get it off the board. And I'm gonna take Die Hard 2.

• 1:08:03Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:08:04Amanda Dobbins?

Um, because that way I don't have to take a look who's talking to, which was number two on my list and germane to my life right now because it's about potty training. But, um, Die Hard 2, this is the one at the airport.

• 1:08:14Speaker 03

Yes. Do you, do you, when's the last time you saw it?

• 1:08:17Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, I think we had to rank the Die Hard movies a few years ago.

• 1:08:20Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:08:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Didn't we?

• 1:08:21Speaker 03

Do you feel like you want airports to go back to this era?

• 1:08:25Amanda Dobbins?

When you can show up and roam around and, I mean, I, I definitely need a decrease in airport security now that I'm traveling with two children. Yeah, because like, otherwise we are gonna get arrested.

• 1:08:36Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:08:37Amanda Dobbins?

Because Knox just beelines for every, he's like trying to get on every plane at this point. And he like sees like the security keypad, you know, and he's just like gonna press some numbers and then like bolt through it like the kid in Love Actually. So, yeah, I, I mean, I'm, I'm okay with it.

• 1:08:54Speaker 03

Maybe there is a Home Alone IP exploration we could do called Plane Alone?

• 1:08:59Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:00Speaker 03

  Where it's just Knox.

• 1:09:01Sean Fennessey?

  In the sky.

• 1:09:02Speaker 03

  Yeah, in the sky.

• 1:09:03Sean Fennessey?

  Solo.

• 1:09:04Speaker 03

  Flying.

• 1:09:05Sean Fennessey?

  Turn on autopilot.

• 1:09:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:09:07Sean Fennessey?

Uh, Die Hard 2, I like, it's fun. It's insane.

• 1:09:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 1:09:11Sean Fennessey?

Very insane. There's a very, very wildly upsetting, um, plane crash.

• 1:09:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:16Sean Fennessey?

  In this movie.

• 1:09:17Speaker 03

When they turn the lights out.

• 1:09:18Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:09:18Sean Fennessey?

Uh, Rennie Harlan in fuck it mode, saying we don't care about good taste in our Die Hard movie.

• 1:09:23Speaker 03

Sure. I think, yeah. It was, it was so inconceivable back then that.

• 1:09:28Sean Fennessey?

When William Sadler is nude doing karate yoga at the beginning, are you like, that's a life goal?

• 1:09:33Speaker 03

  I think Matt Damon was.

• 1:09:34Sean Fennessey?

  It's odd. It's true. There's.

• 1:09:36Speaker 03

I think Matt Damon was like, that's the body that, of Odysseus.

• 1:09:39Sean Fennessey?

And do you think General Ramon Esperanza, as portrayed by Franco Nero, had some good ideas about the body politic?

• 1:09:45Speaker 03

We don't know what his platform was.

• 1:09:49Speaker 03

  He was silenced.

• 1:09:50Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, that's two Bonnie Bedelia movies for Amanda.

• 1:09:53Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, that's right.

• 1:09:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:09:55Amanda Dobbins?

I think kind of some similar energy. I mean, I know she's blonde, so you know, it's.

• 1:10:01Speaker 03

Similar energy to you or her two characters in this film have the similar energy?

• 1:10:05Amanda Dobbins?

Hmm, I guess I was going character based.

• 1:10:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:10:07Amanda Dobbins?

But I think, I think that.

• 1:10:10Sean Fennessey?

You being similar to the lady in Presumed Innocent is very amusing.

• 1:10:12Amanda Dobbins?

I was gonna say, both can be, could be achieved.

• 1:10:14Speaker 03

She takes the law into her own hands in both films.

• 1:10:17Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, which you know I'd like to do.

• 1:10:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:10:20Sean Fennessey?

Uh, okay, so I have two picks.

• 1:10:25Sean Fennessey?

Hmm, the categories I'm missing, I'm also missing sequel, I'm missing drama, and I'm missing wild card. Wow, wild card is just rippling with possibilities, my word. In drama, easy one, I waited, I'm taking David Lynch's Wild at Heart.

• 1:10:42Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:10:42Sean Fennessey?

Which is a beautiful movie that is borderline insane, starring Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern. It is, uh, kind of a romance, kind of an action movie, kind of a blanket homage to Wizard of Oz. Thought about taking it an Oscar nominee, Diane Ladd, Laura Dern's mother, is in this movie playing kind of like the wicked witch in some ways, trying to track down these two young lovers on this crazy road trip. Nick Cage just in full snake skin boot, rock and roll, fake Elvis mode. Electrifying, this is like one, probably one of the first movies I ever saw that like shifted the expectations totally of a studio movie of like a star movie.

• 1:11:25Sean Fennessey?

Where just like when you're watching a David Lynch movie and everything just feels a little bit tilted, five or seven degrees, and you can't totally figure out why or even what he's trying to do by making it feel that way. But it's not so, it's not, you know, um, inland empire. It's not so weird that you can't follow the narrative of the story. But I remember very specifically that staircase scene with Diane Ladd just being so upsetting and weird and the smear of the lipstick. So this movie won the Palme d'Or that year.

• 1:11:50Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:11:50Sean Fennessey?

And has gone on to be legendary, although I wouldn't say it's in my like upper, upper echelon for Lynch. It's still truly great.

• 1:11:59Sean Fennessey?

  That's drama.

• 1:12:01Sean Fennessey?

I guess we'll go to sequel. Now,

• 1:12:06Sean Fennessey?

I don't want to step on your pick, but there are not one, not two, not three, not four, but five sequels to legendary, iconic Hollywood, new Hollywood films. Five films that absolutely changed movies and five films that I feel inspired by, that I love to this day, and I'm so interested in. And I'm not going to choose a sequel to any of those movies in this category. I'm taking Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

• 1:12:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, good.

• 1:12:46Sean Fennessey?

Which is just one of my favorite movies ever, Joe Dante's. What happens in Gremlins 2: The New Batch? Are they working at like? I'm really glad you asked.

• 1:12:53Amanda Dobbins?

Is this like a classic Gremlins 2 is way better than Gremlins? Like, is that among the Gremlins heads? Like, that's a real?

• 1:12:59Sean Fennessey?

Well, Gremlins is, is a wonderful movie. That is a movie about a small town and like working class family in a small town. A father who's an inventor, who's trying to get his son, you know, set up in the new world and.

• 1:13:15Amanda Dobbins?

The new batch, the new batch of Gremlins?

• 1:13:18Sean Fennessey?

The new batch of Gremlins. I'm, I'm, I'm ready to share with you some thoughts about those Gremlins. What is? The first one was a small film written by Chris Columbus. The second film, you know, produced by Spielberg and Joe Dante and this interesting triumvirate of characters.

• 1:13:32Sean Fennessey?

The second film is set basically in Trump Tower. Yeah. And. A department store, right? It's, it's sort of like an everything skyscraper. That you can sort of visit, that's a TV station that is, you know, has a restaurant inside of it. And, you know, the, the, the characters from the first film are both working inside of this tower. When the Gremlins are introduced to the tower, Magua comes in and gives birth to Gremlins. And the Gremlins are introduced into the building. And then because of all the technology in the building and because of all the influences of media, a lot of different kinds of gremlins are created. There's like a vegetable gremlin. There's like a vampire gremlin. There's an electricity gremlin. There's all these weird-

• 1:14:17Amanda Dobbins?

Why is there a vegetable gremlin?

• 1:14:19Sean Fennessey?

Because there's like a cooking show where there are vegetables.

• 1:14:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:14:22Sean Fennessey?

  It's like, it's so, it's-

• 1:14:23Amanda Dobbins?

  What?

• 1:14:24Sean Fennessey?

  It's complete batshit.

• 1:14:26Amanda Dobbins?

Someone has to ask the question, Chris.

• 1:14:28Sean Fennessey?

There's a legendary Key and Peele sketch about Gremlins 2 that is so funny, that if you watch it, you can see Jordan Peele and the character that he's playing as like the studio executive explaining Gremlins 2 to a group of people at a studio that shows you why Jordan Peele is now who Jordan Peele is. Right. Because he gets the joke and the mechanics of this movie so well. Gremlins 2 is ridiculous. If you go in thinking it's like a serious scary creature movie- I never thought that about Gremlins, yeah. You will misunderstand it. To me, it's like one of the cleverest, if not the most clever movie about like the scary future of America, just using Gremlins as the stand-in for the problem. John Glover plays the Trump stand-in. He's a very benevolent Trump stand-in,

• 1:15:10Sean Fennessey?

but it is a truly magical movie. So Gremlins 2, the new batch. Okay.

• 1:15:17Amanda Dobbins?

  That's beautiful.

• 1:15:17Sean Fennessey?

Thank you. Is it my turn? It's your turn.

• 1:15:21Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I am-

• 1:15:22Sean Fennessey?

  No, it's Amanda's turn.

• 1:15:23Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. What was your first pick?

• 1:15:25Sean Fennessey?

My first pick was Wild at Heart.

• 1:15:27Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, sure. Right, okay. Wild at Heart and Gremlins 2. Very normal stuff.

• 1:15:30Sean Fennessey?

  Those are me-coded.

• 1:15:31Amanda Dobbins?

Um, so I have drama and wildcard left. And in drama, I will take Postcards from the Edge.

• 1:15:41Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:42Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, which is a Mike Nichols film, written by Carrie Fisher, adapted from her like semi-autobiographical novel.

• 1:15:52Sean Fennessey?

How's that book? Did you read it?

• 1:15:52Amanda Dobbins?

I've never read it, actually. Um, I've never- I don't think, I guess I did read Wishful Drinking was, I read some form of Wishful Drinking. But, um, and so anyway, this movie stars Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine in the,

• 1:16:10Amanda Dobbins?

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds-esque roles and is about, Meryl Streep is a, it's a movie star who gets sent to rehab for a cocaine problem and then is released on the terms that she lives with her mother, who is like an old Hollywood star.

• 1:16:28Speaker 03

In order to get like bonded.

• 1:16:30Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, in order to like get insurance to be able to, um, to, to, to keep working. And it is about moms and daughters and addiction and Hollywood and, um, and, and also just like star power. There are several musical sequences in this where, including one absolutely incredible Shirley MacLaine.

• 1:16:57Sean Fennessey?

  The dinner party.

• 1:16:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, the dinner party. Yeah.

• 1:17:00Sean Fennessey?

So painful, so painful to watch.

• 1:17:02Amanda Dobbins?

It's so painful and amazing, but then also what Meryl Streep is doing in that scene, watching her and hating her and loving her. Um, there aren't a lot of great mother daughter movies in history because of mostly men make movies or have historically. Um, but this one really nails it and is wonderful and incredible. Like the, the last sequence also with Meryl Streep and, um, and her performance, just like really memorable. It is like mostly just kind of like observed moments rather than like any big narrative, you know?

• 1:17:40Speaker 03

  Really great dialogue, really well.

• 1:17:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:42Speaker 03

Like there's a couple of really great overlapping dialogue scenes where like they're both talking at the same time.

• 1:17:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Exactly.

• 1:17:47Sean Fennessey?

You know who's fantastic in this movie? Gene Hackman. Such a small performance, but so, so, so good in this.

• 1:17:54Speaker 03

  Good Rob Reiner too.

• 1:17:54Sean Fennessey?

Good Rob Reiner, Richard Dreyfuss, um, Annette Bening is in this movie.

• 1:17:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Young tennis queen.

• 1:17:59Sean Fennessey?

  Dennis Quaid.

• 1:17:59Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, Annette Bening, one scene is incredibly.

• 1:18:02Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, Oliver Platt, Michael Anke, and there's like a ton of people in this movie.

• 1:18:04Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it's Mike Nichols, one of my faves.

• 1:18:07Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Good pick. CR, you've got.

• 1:18:11Speaker 03

I got sequel and wildcard and sequel is a tough one.

• 1:18:17Sean Fennessey?

Would you, I mean, I can read you the list.

• 1:18:19Speaker 03

  I, I, I know the three.

• 1:18:21Sean Fennessey?

There's a, there's a, the long lit, the, the, this is an interesting list.

• 1:18:24Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:18:25Sean Fennessey?

Cause to me, it strikes me as a collision of the shitbird eighties and the,

• 1:18:34Sean Fennessey?

you know, boomer-y seventies, trying to reclaim their, their mantle. So the post eighties crowd, Amanda already took Die Hard two, arguably the best of the bunch from that particular crop. You've also got Predator two, you've also got another 48 Hours, you've also got Robocop two, and Young Guns two. Not to mention Three Men and a Little Lady and Look Who's Talking Two.

• 1:18:56Amanda Dobbins?

Three Men and a Little Lady was also on my list.

• 1:18:58Speaker 03

There's two other movies there though.

• 1:19:00Sean Fennessey?

Now, there's a bunch of other movies that are seventies sequels.

• 1:19:04Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:19:04Sean Fennessey?

So among them, of course, there's The Godfather Part Three, one of the most memorable, or one of the most notable ones. But you've also got Texas Phil, which is the last picture show sequel. You've got the Two Jakes, which is the Chinatown sequel. You've got the Exorcist Three.

• 1:19:16Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:19:17Sean Fennessey?

You've also got Leatherface, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Three, and you've got Rocky Five. That's a lot of sequels to major historical movies.

• 1:19:25Speaker 03

Yeah. Well, I'm going to be selecting Exorcist Three.

• 1:19:28Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:19:29Speaker 03

I do like Godfather Part Three, but Exorcist Three is one of the great horror movies I think ever made, honestly. Um, one of the scariest jump scares still to this day that I've ever seen. I won't spoil it for people, but it is essentially William Peter Blatty, who wrote the novel for The Exorcist, or the novel that The Exorcist is based on. He, uh, after the horror show that happened with Exorcist Two, directed Exorcist Three. It stars George C. Scott as a detective who is investigating the possibility of like, a serial killer that he thought long dead has come back to terrorize Georgetown.

• 1:20:05Speaker 03

And it ties in with The Exorcist 1 with the father from the priest from the first movie. But it's just got like, kind of to your point about Wild at Heart. There are some scenes and some ways of doing things in this movie that are like 8% stranger than your usual Hollywood horror movie or Hollywood film, you know, across the board. And those, that 8% makes this film so memorable. Like the agonizing tension it builds up, some of the religious imagery, some of the, you know, admittedly corny, but like really breathtaking in conception, special effects, like the interrogation scene. Just incredible stuff.

• 1:20:47Sean Fennessey?

Have you seen The Ninth Configuration, William Peter Vlade's directorial debut?

• 1:20:51Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:20:52Sean Fennessey?

Very interesting movie starring Stacy Keach. I think it's about astronauts who come back from a space travel and are mentally tortured. Very, very interesting movie.

• 1:21:02Speaker 03

  Interesting.

• 1:21:03Sean Fennessey?

  This we're checking out.

• 1:21:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Sorry.

• 1:21:08Speaker 03

And you wonder why there's no mother-daughter movies.

• 1:21:12Amanda Dobbins?

I'm sorry. It was just like.

• 1:21:13Speaker 03

We can make a mother-daughter movie, but what do astronauts feel when they come back?

• 1:21:17Amanda Dobbins?

Like, what's the SNL sk- discuss? It's like coffee talk, you know? Yeah. And it was just like the two of you, but just as soon as you started saying like the final configuration and you guys are just like, like whatever that's called.

• 1:21:29Speaker 03

It's something about this desk that, you know, it's like you can only be in a one-on-one convo. It's hard. I agree with you that the ninth.

• 1:21:38Sean Fennessey?

Honestly, just was so kind during the postcards from the edge glossing and then as soon as I say the ninth configuration, just totally rudeness.

• 1:21:44Amanda Dobbins?

No, I was listening, but then.

• 1:21:45Sean Fennessey?

Just literally laughing. It's just really embarrassing. Okay. Uh, so did you take your wild card yet?

• 1:21:52Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:21:53Sean Fennessey?

You have a wild card. No, you have two. Wait.

• 1:21:55Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. So once we had seven.

• 1:21:58Sean Fennessey?

  We mess up the math?

• 1:21:59Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I just, I think like this, this snake is gonna be a little weird.

• 1:22:03Speaker 03

  Oh, so what happens then?

• 1:22:04Amanda Dobbins?

So I only need one more pick. So then I think it goes to you. Do you have two or one or?

• 1:22:09Sean Fennessey?

No, because Chris has one more, right?

• 1:22:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:22:12Sean Fennessey?

  On the turn here, right?

• 1:22:13Speaker 03

  And then I'll be done.

• 1:22:14Sean Fennessey?

And then he'll be done and then you'll have one.

• 1:22:16Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, okay. And then it works. Oh, great. Okay.

• 1:22:18Sean Fennessey?

  I think that's right.

• 1:22:19Amanda Dobbins?

  I don't know. I can't really count.

• 1:22:20Speaker 03

Wild card, wild card, wild card. Well.

• 1:22:23Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, I think that's right.

• 1:22:24Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:22:29Speaker 03

I am going to pick a movie that I was not allowed to see when it came out and was like titillated by like just in terms of like seeing pictures from from its making and the set but like did not see it until much later. And that is The Cook, The Thief, The Wife and Her Lover.

• 1:22:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Awesome.

• 1:22:46Speaker 03

Peter Greenway. This is the second Peter Greenway movie I've taken. I took one in 1982 as well. The Draft and the Contract. This is one of the most sumptuous, beautifully shot movies and one of the most loveliest scores. Michael Nyman, his score for this film, I play like very often at my house. Helen Mirren, Michael Gambon, a very young Tim Roth, in a fucked up story of lust and love and greed and gluttony. And I would recommend, I mean, if anybody has even the most passing curiosity of this filmmaker, this is the best place to enter, although I will say caution. Mature subjects are described and and shown in this film.

• 1:23:30Speaker 03

More trade, for sure, yeah. But this is so beautiful, like the cinematography and specifically the camera movements, the conception of the world that was like built up on sets and, you know, like a room will be painted entirely red. Helen Mirren will be wearing a red dress, you know, and like the way he uses color, he truly sees film like the way a fine artist does. And I just recommend people check this out if they haven't seen it.

• 1:23:55Amanda Dobbins?

When you say that you weren't allowed to see it, like, did you try?

• 1:23:59Speaker 03

There's like a scene where Michael Gambon just like has his hand on Helen Mirren's breast at the dinner table.

• 1:24:05Amanda Dobbins?

  I know.

• 1:24:05Speaker 03

And I remember like kind of like catching that out of the corner of my eye and being like, what's going on there?

• 1:24:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:09Speaker 03

My dad being like, just watch Goodfellas again.

• 1:24:13Speaker 03

I think it was like in a book about movies, there was just like a lot of like stills from Peter Greenway movies of like naked people. And I was like, what is going down here? You know? He's an erotic British man. Yeah. Yeah. So am I.

• 1:24:28Sean Fennessey?

You truly are. You truly are. This is a great movie, beautiful movie, but also very gross.

• 1:24:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:33Sean Fennessey?

And there's a lot of eating.

• 1:24:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:34Sean Fennessey?

It's sort of disgusting. Michael Gambon, a tortoise in this movie. He is amazing and has a lot of like weight to carry because he's just talking throughout the whole movie. You know, as this sort of like crime boss figure. Uh, okay. Great pick. Amanda, you have one more pick as well in wildcard.

• 1:24:51Amanda Dobbins?

I am gonna go with a movie that I do remember seeing in theaters, which I, I think is a little strange that I was taken because I would have been five or six, but I have the memory of Cher and Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci all on the screen. And I guess the thinking must just have been like, well, there are three women in this. So we, we better take our little, like our little woman to the movie. So this is Mermaids.

• 1:25:17Amanda Dobbins?

Which is like, is a family story, a story about a young girl who like, doesn't really fit in, in her town or with her weird older sister and mom who is Cher.

• 1:25:30Amanda Dobbins?

And, and like a period piece that's set in the sixties and then, and then, you know, typical coming of age hijinks ensue, but I remember liking it. This might've been my first introduction to Cher also. Just like the, the power of Cher on screen. I don't know where I would have encountered her before.

• 1:25:48Speaker 03

Has it been struck before this?

• 1:25:49Sean Fennessey?

  Possibly.

• 1:25:50Amanda Dobbins?

Well, sure, but I was three.

• 1:25:51Sean Fennessey?

  The witches of Eastwick?

• 1:25:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:25:53Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. I, I mean, no, I don't, I think so. I think that, I think that this was it.

• 1:25:56Sean Fennessey?

It felt like a really big deal when I was a kid, this movie.

• 1:25:59Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. And has not lived on.

• 1:26:00Sean Fennessey?

It doesn't have as much of a reputation, although I'm looking at, you know, Richard Benjamin, the actor was the director of this movie.

• 1:26:06Sean Fennessey?

And he came up, actually I was on Blank Check over the weekend for an episode that I recorded like roughly 12 years ago.

• 1:26:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:26:12Sean Fennessey?

But I remember in that conversation, we were talking about the movie Made in America. The Ted Danson, Whoopi Goldberg movie.

• 1:26:18Speaker 03

  Uh huh.

• 1:26:18Sean Fennessey?

Where Ted Danson wore, uh, blackface at the Friar Roast. Do you remember this?

• 1:26:23Amanda Dobbins?

  No.

• 1:26:24Sean Fennessey?

You don't, you know, not on the story? Oh, it's like a legendary bizarre thing that happened in pop culture.

• 1:26:29Speaker 03

He was in, he was in, he was like out of the paint for like 10 years.

• 1:26:33Sean Fennessey?

  Basically canceled.

• 1:26:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:26:34Sean Fennessey?

Um, and you know, Ted Danson, obviously now is like so beloved, but he was dating Whoopi Goldberg at the time and like in a quote, unquote tribute to her, wore blackface and gave his performance at the Friar Roast. Anyway, Richard Benjamin directed that movie. So we were talking about him. That movie came just a couple of years after Mermaids.

• 1:26:50Sean Fennessey?

Which is good. I actually just left for the first time, maybe like three months ago. And I enjoyed it.

• 1:26:55Speaker 03

Did you ever see Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael, which is the other big like Winona, like

• 1:27:00Amanda Dobbins?

  I don't.

• 1:27:00Speaker 03

starting to kind of emerge movie from this year?

• 1:27:02Sean Fennessey?

  This year?

• 1:27:02Amanda Dobbins?

I know. I don't think so. But I just realized, so this also stars-

• 1:27:06Sean Fennessey?

There's also Edward Scissorhands, by the way.

• 1:27:08Amanda Dobbins?

Right, yeah. This also stars Michael Schefling, who is obviously Jake Ryan from Sixteen Candles. But then he's also the next year in a movie called Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken. I don't know if you ever, but that was another very formative movie-going experience for me at the age of six or seven. And I had forgotten.

• 1:27:25Speaker 03

Wait, who's in Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken? Is Mary Stuart Masterson in that?

• 1:27:28Amanda Dobbins?

  That sounds right, but-

• 1:27:29Speaker 03

  Was she in-

• 1:27:30Sean Fennessey?

  It's Gabrielle Anwar.

• 1:27:31Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:27:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, yeah. Anyway.

• 1:27:35Speaker 03

This is, this is our, this is your version of naming Cincinnati Reds.

• 1:27:38Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, this is, he's your Chris Stabo.

• 1:27:40Amanda Dobbins?

  I guess so.

• 1:27:42Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, okay.

• 1:27:44Speaker 03

  Do you have wild card?

• 1:27:45Sean Fennessey?

I just have a wild card.

• 1:27:48Sean Fennessey?

I mean, is this where I go into my long laundry list of honorable mentions here?

• 1:27:52Speaker 03

You may. I can do the same.

• 1:27:54Amanda Dobbins?

I don't know. I just, I just deleted all of mine, which is bad.

• 1:27:57Sean Fennessey?

  Unbelievable number of movies.

• 1:27:58Speaker 03

  Are you gonna pick Tremors?

• 1:28:00Sean Fennessey?

No, I like Tremors, but it isn't one of my movies. And I know for a lot of people, it is one of their big movies.

• 1:28:05Speaker 03

Are you gonna pick Charlie Sheen and Michael Biehn's Navy Seals?

• 1:28:08Sean Fennessey?

  Never seen it.

• 1:28:09Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:28:09Sean Fennessey?

Never seen it. I know that Vinegar Syndrome put out a big fancy edition of it on Blu-ray recently, but I've not seen the film.

• 1:28:15Speaker 03

What about Christian Slater's Pump Up the Volume?

• 1:28:18Sean Fennessey?

As you know, not a big movie for me, though it did invent podcasting.

• 1:28:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:28:21Sean Fennessey?

  And Harry Hardon?

• 1:28:24Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:28:24Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, that's, it's a good movie. Cool movie. I like it.

• 1:28:29Sean Fennessey?

You wanna try to pitch me some more ideas?

• 1:28:30Speaker 03

  Mo Better Blues?

• 1:28:32Sean Fennessey?

Mo Better Blues is sitting at the top of my wild card list right now. Spike Lee's amazing, completely different follow-up to Do the Right Thing. Sort of like love story exploration of the artist's soul, starring Denzel Washington as a jazz musician. Movie that I've always really, really liked. And I think that's probably where I'm gonna go, but I do wanna put, point some arrows at a couple of movies I really like.

• 1:28:53Speaker 03

  Frankenhooker?

• 1:28:54Sean Fennessey?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Well, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, if I had not taken Home Alone, I would've, I would've considered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Me too. Big, big movie for me. Saw it in a movie theater, loved it. Saw it with my cousins, I remember it vividly.

• 1:29:06Sean Fennessey?

Phil Janot's State of Grace, uh, which is-

• 1:29:09Speaker 03

One of the great Gary Oldman performances.

• 1:29:10Sean Fennessey?

An incredible year for Irish gangsters.

• 1:29:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:29:13Sean Fennessey?

Between Chris Walken and King of New York and Miller's Crossing. New York was really-

• 1:29:17Speaker 03

  Was it Dinkins?

• 1:29:19Sean Fennessey?

I think it is Dinkins, yeah. Oh, Dinkins?

• 1:29:21Speaker 03

  Yeah, the mayor.

• 1:29:22Sean Fennessey?

  May- yeah, David Dinkins.

• 1:29:24Speaker 03

I think the cinematographer for State of Grace is Jordan Cronenworth.

• 1:29:29Sean Fennessey?

That sounds right. Um, I'm surprised you didn't take State of Grace.

• 1:29:32Speaker 03

I was, it was that or King of New York. It was right on the line.

• 1:29:36Sean Fennessey?

I just revisited Almodovar's Time Me Up, Tie Me Down. Which I don't think I had totally realized was basically the last movie that Antonio Banderas made before

• 1:29:48Sean Fennessey?

making the leap to Hollywood with Mambo Kings and then going on. And watching the movie, you know what movie I thought of? Baby Girl. Cause they're very similar in some ways. Time Me Up, Tie Me Down is about a sort of a porn actress who's making a shift to making a horror movie and a young man who gets out of a mental facility and begins stalking her on set. He's a younger man and he kidnaps her. And then they have this sort of like psychosexual affair and then Stockholm Syndrome sets in and they fall in love. Crazy Almodovar movie. Not my favorite, but really a good one if people haven't seen it. I watched, I rewatched Sam Raimi's Dark Man.

• 1:30:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:30:22Sean Fennessey?

Which is fucking awesome. It's so good. This is such a good year for like, not shitty comic book movies.

• 1:30:29Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:30:29Sean Fennessey?

There's just like a lot of, it's a very comic booky, like 1940's style serial, but- Dark Man?

• 1:30:36Speaker 03

  Dark Man.

• 1:30:37Sean Fennessey?

  What is Dark Man, Neil?

• 1:30:38Speaker 03

It's Liam Neeson and he gets thrown in toxic waste or what happens?

• 1:30:42Sean Fennessey?

Dipped in toxic waste, but he is a scientist who's been developing this kind of skin that allows you to like-

• 1:30:47Speaker 03

  Skincare.

• 1:30:48Sean Fennessey?

I'm listening, I'm listening! He can, um, kind of become anyone. Like, he can, he can look like anybody. Okay, so like Mission Impossible?

• 1:30:56Speaker 03

  Yeah, like Ethan Hunt.

• 1:30:56Sean Fennessey?

It is a mask forward, yeah. Um, but Frances McDormand plays his love interest. And all the stuff that is cool about the Raimi Spider-Man movies starts here. Uh, what else?

• 1:31:09Speaker 03

  Uh, Flatliners.

• 1:31:11Sean Fennessey?

I, I, I tried again. I've never been able to get into this movie.

• 1:31:13Speaker 03

Love that movie. Love that movie.

• 1:31:15Sean Fennessey?

The other big Julia Roberts movie of 1990.

• 1:31:17Amanda Dobbins?

Also very important in her personal life.

• 1:31:19Sean Fennessey?

That's right. Kiefer Sutherland is the star. Jason Patrick appears in the movie as is Kevin Bacon and Oliver Platt.

• 1:31:25Amanda Dobbins?

Google Old People magazines if you don't know what we're talking about.

• 1:31:28Speaker 03

Do you think My Blue Heaven is good?

• 1:31:29Sean Fennessey?

  I love it.

• 1:31:30Speaker 03

I love this movie too. It got kind of blown out of the water by Goodfellas because it's the same movie.

• 1:31:34Sean Fennessey?

It's the same movie. Well, it's sort of like the sequel in some ways about the, you know, Henry Hill moving to the suburbs. But I've always been in love with this movie. I think Steve Martin is hilarious. Great Rick Moranis performance. John Cusack, terrific in this movie. Written by your girl Nora Ephron. Nora Ephron sitting at home writing My Blue Heaven after her experience meeting Henry Hill because Nicholas Pileggi, her husband,

• 1:31:56Speaker 03

  I don't even think I knew that.

• 1:31:58Sean Fennessey?

Henry Hill because of Goodfellas because he was writing Wise Guy.

• 1:32:00Amanda Dobbins?

Are they, they're together at this point?

• 1:32:02Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 1:32:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:32:03Sean Fennessey?

That's the whole, that's an amazing origin that at the same time that's happening between the two of them. What a great creative household that must have been. Um, arachnophobia?

• 1:32:14Sean Fennessey?

Wouldn't you want to live that way?

• 1:32:15Amanda Dobbins?

It's not me. I don't have the giggles this time. It's not me.

• 1:32:18Sean Fennessey?

Would you not want to live that way?

• 1:32:19Speaker 03

I, I would. I would. I would love to be in a creative household like that.

• 1:32:25Sean Fennessey?

Do you not feel like you are in one right now?

• 1:32:27Speaker 03

I, like in this house or like in my, my relationship with my wife. I, there's nothing but creativity between me and my wife. Yeah.

• 1:32:35Sean Fennessey?

  I'll say.

• 1:32:35Speaker 03

We just throw, we throw around. It's a marketplace of ideas. Yeah.

• 1:32:40Sean Fennessey?

That's great to hear. Uh, is that a tariff free marketplace? So we're rolling those out there?

• 1:32:45Speaker 03

It's American made, both of us. Yeah.

• 1:32:48Sean Fennessey?

Uh, I want to shout out Charles Burnett's To Sleep With Anger.

• 1:32:51Speaker 03

  Awesome movie.

• 1:32:52Sean Fennessey?

  Great film with Danny Glover.

• 1:32:55Speaker 03

You a fan of The Grifters?

• 1:32:56Sean Fennessey?

I, I quite like The Grifters. Stephen Freer, Freers.

• 1:33:00Speaker 03

  That's a mother son movie.

• 1:33:01Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. Yeah. Yeah. We have more of those, but I'm, I'm not really sure. I like the portrayal.

• 1:33:06Sean Fennessey?

That's what we stand at attention for, Annette Bening movie, honestly. John Cusack, Angelica Huston and Annette Bening as a bunch of con artists. Super fun movie. Blue Steel, Catherine Bigelow's.

• 1:33:17Speaker 03

  I'm well aware.

• 1:33:17Sean Fennessey?

Drama about a, a female police officer played by Jamie Lee Curtis who's in too deep. Ron Silver wildly upsetting in this film.

• 1:33:26Speaker 03

There's only one place for cops to be, that's in too deep.

• 1:33:29Sean Fennessey?

That's true. You don't think I'm a cop who's just like, yeah, easy going guy.

• 1:33:32Speaker 03

I don't want them to be in too deep, like in real life, but in movies, if they're not in too deep, I'm not interested.

• 1:33:37Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. Speaking of in too deep, we had a double hit of Dennis Hopper directed thrillers this year. One is Backtrack starring Jodie Foster. The other is The Hot Spot starring Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Connelly.

• 1:33:50Speaker 03

  We must mention.

• 1:33:50Sean Fennessey?

  Wow.

• 1:33:51Speaker 03

The soundtrack to The Hot Spot was done by John Lee Hooker and Miles Davis and Taj Mahal.

• 1:33:58Sean Fennessey?

The Hot Spot is highly recommended by yours truly.

• 1:34:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:34:01Sean Fennessey?

There's some wonderful things. But you're not taking it? Not taking it. Okay. Uh, I can keep going here. There's so many. I mean, Arachnophobia is a huge one. That one, that was, to me, that's sort of like the ur Amblin movie that was not directed by Steven Spielberg. It's directed by Frank Marshall, his longtime producer. It's sort of like Jaws, but with spiders, you know, like silly and exciting and kind of gnaws at your primal fear nerve.

• 1:34:28Sean Fennessey?

I'll take Mo Better Blues. I love Mo Better Blues.

• 1:34:31Speaker 03

  Good, great pick.

• 1:34:32Sean Fennessey?

Great pick. I like Spike. Thank you. Uh, any other? I thought about taking Life is Sweet, the Mike Lee movie. I don't know if you guys have ever seen that one?

• 1:34:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:34:40Sean Fennessey?

With, uh, Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall, Alison Stedman. Kind of like, this is a dumb way to say it, but like, kind of his first, like, Mike Lee movie, you know, not a TV movie for the BBC, his first movie, I think with Dick Pope, his longtime cinematographer, just passed away after they made, um.

• 1:34:59Speaker 03

  Hard Truths.

• 1:35:00Sean Fennessey?

Thank you. And there's a lot of hard truths in Life is Sweet. So if people liked Hard Truths, they should seek that one out. I think it's on the Criterion Channel right now. Any other honorable mentions?

• 1:35:10Speaker 03

I'll just throw one that I watched actually last year at some point, which was Hidden Agenda, which is a Ken Loach kind of thriller.

• 1:35:18Sean Fennessey?

  Frances McDormand, right?

• 1:35:19Speaker 03

Frances McDormand and Brian Cox, um, which is incredible. There's a lot of other ones, though.

• 1:35:25Sean Fennessey?

John Waters' Cry Babies is this year. Akira Kurosawa's Dreams, which I just watched for the first time over the weekend, which is a fascinating movie about literally Akira Kurosawa remembering his dreams and writing them down and then putting them on screen. It's just nine dreams that he had. Also features a performance by Martin Scorsese as Vincent Van Gogh.

• 1:35:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Wow.

• 1:35:44Sean Fennessey?

The movie was funded in part by Martin Scorsese and George Lucas, who wanted to patronize one of their heroes at the end of his career. Or maybe it was Coppola who may have paid for it. Anyway, the other movie is, we never, ever, ever talk about this because this filmmaker is not like a legendary international filmmaker, but this movie is beloved, which is Cinema Paradiso, which was a massive arthouse sensation at the time. I think has a long shelf life. Giuseppe Tornatore is the director about a young boy who falls in love with going to the movies and the relationship that he has to going to the movies. That I think is a very divisive movie. Some people think it's very schmaltzy and very saccharine sentimental.

• 1:36:29Sean Fennessey?

And some people who are like, this defines why movies are special. I think part of the reason why I didn't bring it up is I'm kind of like in the middle on it. But I'm sure that if we posted the episode, people would be like, where is Cinema Paradiso in your discussion of blah, blah, blah?

• 1:36:44Speaker 03

If we posted the episode, should we keep this one private?

• 1:36:47Sean Fennessey?

I have to cut around my Kristi Noem joke, but otherwise I think we're gonna be okay. Bob, do you have a favorite 1990 movie that was discussed here today?

• 1:36:56Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, It's Goodfellas. It's like my favorite movie ever. I just watched that for my birthday a couple of weeks ago, just by myself, 11:00 PM. It's so hard every time.

• 1:37:06Sean Fennessey?

It still works. It's amazing. We sat in just for the beginning of it when we were screening it in.

• 1:37:10Speaker 03

  At the end.

• 1:37:10Sean Fennessey?

  In Boston.

• 1:37:11Speaker 03

  We came back for the.

• 1:37:12Sean Fennessey?

  At the end.

• 1:37:12Speaker 03

We came back for Harry Nilson.

• 1:37:14Amanda Dobbins?

  When did you get up?

• 1:37:16Sean Fennessey?

I think as soon as, was it as soon as Ray appeared?

• 1:37:20Speaker 03

  When Ray Liotta comes in.

• 1:37:21Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. We watched all of Young Henry and then got dinner.

• 1:37:24Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:37:25Speaker 04

I think that, um, Scorsese's mom should have been in every single movie in the 90s with a different painting of two dogs.

• 1:37:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:37:33Speaker 04

I think that could have improved every single movie.

• 1:37:35Speaker 03

He says, what do you want from me?

• 1:37:38Sean Fennessey?

Uh, okay, let's recap our selections.

• 1:37:41Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:37:41Sean Fennessey?

  Before we depart.

• 1:37:43Speaker 03

Uh, in drama, I had Miller's Crossing. In comedy, I had House Party. In action horror thriller, I took King of New York. In Oscar nominee, I took Goodfellas. In sequel, I took Exorcist 3. And in blockbuster, I took Days of Thunder. And in wildcard, I took The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. Double Greenway for your boy. Not a lot of competition. Not a big race to pick Peter Greenway movies, but good films. Thanks.

• 1:38:10Sean Fennessey?

Uh, okay, Manda, what did you get?

• 1:38:12Amanda Dobbins?

In drama, I took Postcards from the Edge. In comedy, Metropolitan. In action horror thriller, I have The Hunt for Red October. Thank you, Chris. In Oscar nominee, I have Pretty Woman. In sequel, Die Hard 2. In blockbuster, Presumed Innocent. And in wildcard, Mermaids.

• 1:38:27Sean Fennessey?

Okay. In drama, I have Wild at Heart. In comedy, Home Alone. That'd be an interesting double feature. In action horror thriller, I have Misery. In Oscar nominee, I have Ghost. In sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. In blockbuster, Total Recall. And in wildcard, Mo Better Blues.

• 1:38:47Sean Fennessey?

  That just about does it.

• 1:38:47Speaker 03

Yeah. We haven't really been, uh, winning these. Like, there hasn't been a lot of-

• 1:38:51Amanda Dobbins?

  We're all winners.

• 1:38:52Speaker 03

  Post-competition.

• 1:38:53Amanda Dobbins?

When we get to see you, Chris.

• 1:38:55Speaker 03

  Thanks.

• 1:38:55Sean Fennessey?

Do you feel that your spirits have been meaningfully lifted here today?

• 1:38:58Speaker 03

My spirits were fine. You know, I, I think that, I think I, Rory put me in a weird spot.

• 1:39:03Sean Fennessey?

  What do you mean?

• 1:39:03Speaker 03

I just think he just like, he wore me out emotionally, you know?

• 1:39:06Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, you, you were very tense.

• 1:39:09Speaker 03

I think he was like, I kept being like, what are we gonna do collectively if he blows us?

• 1:39:13Sean Fennessey?

You were threatening to quit watching golf.

• 1:39:15Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:39:15Sean Fennessey?

That was what you were saying.

• 1:39:15Speaker 03

Which is, like, nobody would care. But like, I mean, I just think-

• 1:39:18Sean Fennessey?

I would, because it's something we do together sometimes.

• 1:39:23Sean Fennessey?

What would you have done if Rory had lost? Just gone on with your day?

• 1:39:26Amanda Dobbins?

No, because I have to manage at least two, you know, two out of the three people, other people in my home would have been truly devastated.

• 1:39:32Speaker 03

She would have truly been Glenn Close in The Wife. She would have had to have brought back up her husband's spirits.

• 1:39:38Sean Fennessey?

But are, is you saying that she is secretly the author of all of Zach's pieces?

• 1:39:43Speaker 04

All of his opinions about Rory Matheroy actually stemmed from Amanda.

• 1:39:48Sean Fennessey?

Uh, I would have been sad, but I would have probably just immediately defaulted to Rory is such a cuck. I can't believe you just did this to us again.

• 1:39:54Amanda Dobbins?

You were like halfway there and you were almost angry.

• 1:39:56Sean Fennessey?

I've watched him do it so many times.

• 1:39:58Amanda Dobbins?

It was like after 18, before the playoff, you, Chris Ryan, were despondent. You, Sean Fantasy, were just like already yelling at him.

• 1:40:07Sean Fennessey?

I'm just like, how can you do this to us again?

• 1:40:08Speaker 03

Yeah, it was like, it was like, we sat here for almost five hours to get punched in the balls so hard would be really, really a weird way to spend.

• 1:40:17Sean Fennessey?

It would have been one of the worst, most unrecoverable losses in sports history.

• 1:40:19Amanda Dobbins?

It was so humiliating until he actually made it happen.

• 1:40:24Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:24Amanda Dobbins?

But it like, it was uncomfortable just sitting there in the room.

• 1:40:27Speaker 03

We also only ate chips for four hours and I had.

• 1:40:30Amanda Dobbins?

  A variety of chips, yeah.

• 1:40:31Speaker 03

Like so much nicotine going through my body at that point. It was really unhealthy too. I think I put myself into a little bit of a, like a coma.

• 1:40:39Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. What was the flavor of those pretzel twists?

• 1:40:41Sean Fennessey?

  Seasoned.

• 1:40:46Sean Fennessey?

I watched your son eat one and have like a little bit of a moment with himself.

• 1:40:50Amanda Dobbins?

He immediately put it back in the bowl. So then I took it before it could like further contaminate.

• 1:40:54Sean Fennessey?

He didn't enjoy. Uh, well, Bobby Wagner, good to see you. Thank you for your work on this episode.

• 1:41:01Speaker 04

  Anytime.

• 1:41:02Sean Fennessey?

Thank you to Jack Sanders. Thank you, uh, all the listeners at home who were quietly voting to themselves as they all did on November 8th back in 2024.

• 1:41:13Amanda Dobbins?

You're just really staring into it. Okay.

• 1:41:16Sean Fennessey?

Uh, you know what? This week is going to get a lot better. It's because Ryan Coogler centers.

• 1:41:21Speaker 03

I think it was, it was a good pod. You got me. It goes up from here maybe, but you know.

• 1:41:25Sean Fennessey?

No, I thought it was a good.

• 1:41:26Speaker 03

  I think.

• 1:41:26Sean Fennessey?

Hey, hey, you both did great. You know, Bob did great. Jack, thank you. You guys did great. No.

• 1:41:31Speaker 04

When did this pod become a everybody gets a fucking trophy pod? You guys are all too nice to each other about the results.

• 1:41:36Sean Fennessey?

  Good point.

• 1:41:37Speaker 04

  Bring some meanness back.

• 1:41:38Sean Fennessey?

Um, you know, you gotta get to your 40s and then give me a call. That's all I'm gonna say, you know?

• 1:41:44Speaker 03

  These moments are fleeting.

• 1:41:45Sean Fennessey?

  It's just, you know?

• 1:41:46Speaker 03

  Things are different.

• 1:41:46Speaker 03

  You never know.

• 1:41:48Sean Fennessey?

  Uh.

• 1:41:48Speaker 03

You could be at Dulles Airport one day and all of a sudden John McClane.

• 1:41:56Sean Fennessey?

Why is John McClane inside of my suitcase?

• 1:41:59Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, so Sinners is coming out. It's coming out. You can see it on 70 millimeter IMAX if you live in one of the five cities where you can find those theaters. Otherwise, you'll just have to see it in a regular IMAX or projected on laser somewhere. Or maybe just wait three months and watch it on your phone like a fucking asshole. Don't do that. See it when it comes out and then listen to the big picture.

• 1:42:18Speaker 03

I apologize to Steven Soderbergh for doing that.

• 1:42:21Sean Fennessey?

Me, Amanda and Van will talk about the movie and I talked to Ryan Coopler for the film. So we'll see you on Friday.

• 1:42:46Speaker 06
